There are collaboration, exhibition, and experiential areas. With the creation of plazas and buildings, the town’s infrastructure is increased, its urban fabric is organized, and it is built in preparation for the flooding events that occur. Organizing space through the stacking of program creates a sequence of circulation and spaces, while allowing flood mitigation. The forms of the buildings respond to topography and context, emphasizing the hillside, offering a counterbalance to the courthouse, and creating an outdoor promenade with natural space.

ABSTRACT SPACES University of Maryland Architectural Design Studio I 9 Weeks Professor Lindsey May Pencil on Vellum
Using a Kit of Parts, this project dealt with the creation and relationship of spaces connected to a theme that would tie the garden and cube together. The location of the spaces and the limitations of a Kit of Parts that created them gave my project a unique, creative opportunity to have a ceremonial sequence that interacted with the walls, floors, and columns, as well as taught the basics of design and an understanding of program. Each space can be interpreted as part of a sequence in an overall ceremony, emphasized by the configuration of the parts used.

THE POP UP University of Maryland Special Topics in Architecture 6 Weeks Professor Lindsey May Pamphlet and Exhibition Board
Pop-Ups are vertical additions to rowhouses and a modern innovation needed for a densifying Washington DC. Our class researched the issue, published a pamphlet, and created a variety of design interpretations of the controversial structures. The site chosen consists of 17 Colonial Revival style rowhouses in the Lanier Heights neighborhood. Due to their unique isolation from buildings of a similar typology and height, the addition of apartment-style housing above the rowhouses allows the original structures to keep their form while blending in more apartments. Additional units and circulation are created behind the rowhouses to not disrupt the street facade. The program consists of different units that all follow a terracing effect related to the original topography and housing. Sustainable features like large south windows and green roofs will be added, while keeping the historic charm of the rowhouses will make this a pleasing new Pop-Up addition.

TENSION & COMPRESSION University of Maryland Architectural Design Studio II 3 Weeks Professor Michael Abrams Pencil Drafting
Using Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion and the kit of parts of materials that built the structure as a precedent, this project focused on constructing abstract spatial experiences with limited resources, but unlimited design creativity. The concepts of expansion and contraction resulted in unique spaces connected and enhanced through the combination of the theme, spatial relationship, and materiality.

BLAGDEN ALLEY CAFE
Plaza & Building Context Bird’s Eye Perspective
University of Maryland Architectural Design Studio II 8 Weeks Professor Michael Abrams Pencil Drafting & Lumion
This project focused on a specific plaza and building in Blagden Alley, D.C., a flourishing area in the heart of the city with popular restaurants, significant street art, and other thriving businesses. The cafe is situated in an infilled space and relates to the context of surrounding buildings, neighborhood, and a newly designed plaza. It is commonly believed that alleys are irrelevant to the urban environment, but this project proves that an alley design can create welcoming public space.

Piazza Torquino Tasso in the Oltrarno neighborhood of Florence, Italy is considered a truly authentic Italian community with a wonderful art scene. This working class area has been affected by many problems for decades, but has overcome these struggles to make this an incredible area of Florence once again. Across from the local park, this Gallery is divided into unique geometric forms that create a cohesive path with distinct rooms of differing heights, sounds and lighting; each room emphasizing the sculpture, paintings, or videos shown in the space. The Tasso Gallery embraces the “rough around the edges” characteristics of the neighborhood to create a welcoming artistic zone for this important district of Florence.
