G

reetings! Your Paducah Symphony Orchestra is having a great season with stellar concert performances, fun community activities, and phenomenal educational outreach programs. We are also in the midst of exciting transitional times, as we are currently searching for our next Executive Director. For the past five seasons, Daniel Sene has led the PSO through a time of remarkable growth and accomplishment. We are very thankful for his leadership, vision and diligent efforts in keeping this organization on a path to success. Our administrative staff is doing great work in all areas, and giving extra effort in this time of transition. Marketing Manager Morgan Walker is our newest employee, and has just gone from part-time to full-time. She has innovative ideas, high energy, and a sharp focus on our mission. Development Director Gina Leeper has taken on an Herculean workload and proven that she has the ability to keep the PSO not merely sustaining its great accomplishments, but even growing more. And Operations Manager Janine Zerger, now our longesttenured administrative staff member, continues to amaze the Board of Directors with her handling of multiple critical elements of the mission, including the supremely important education programs. For example, Janine just brought a brand-new educational opportunity to local youth, the Songwriting Residencies. Students at McNabb Elementary and Reidland Intermediate got to learn from Nashville songwriter and musician Jeff Dayton about how to write songs. These young people did write their own original songs, and Jeff and his friends performed some of that original student music as part of the Artist-in-Residence concert event. Wow! Your PSO just keeps getting more and more creative in giving local youth unique educational programs. As Daniel said in his farewell letter, the best days of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra remain ahead of us. Thank you all so much for your encouragement, support, and participation in the opportunities that prove Daniel correct.

rincipal Clarinet of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1976, Franklin Cohen has distinguished himself as one of the outstanding clarinetists of his generation. His playing has been described as “hypnotic, impeccable, brilliant… with a vocal quality that would be the envy of any singer.” He first gained international recognition and acclaim when, at the age of 22, he became the first clarinetist awarded First Prize at the International Munich Competition (the other first prize that year went to soprano Jessye Norman). Since then, Mr. Cohen has enjoyed an illustrious career as soloist, recitalist, recording and chamber artist, pedagogue and orchestral principal. Since his first solo appearance with The Cleveland Orchestra in 1977, Mr. Cohen has been featured as soloist in nearly 200 performances — at Severance Hall, Carnegie Hall, Blossom Music Center, and on tour throughout the United States, Asia and Europe. In 1992, he recorded the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi for Decca Records. Mr. Cohen is also the soloist in Debussy’s First Rhapsody on a Deutsche Grammophon recording conducted by Pierre Boulez that won two Grammy Awards in 1996, and on a Decca recording of the Brahms Clarinet Sonatas with pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy. With his daughter, violinist Diana Cohen, Franklin Cohen is the co-artistic director of the critically acclaimed ChamberFest Cleveland, the first international summer chamber music festival in Cleveland, which

presented its inaugural season in 2012. ChamberFest’s huge success has led to an expanded vision for growth locally and internationally. Mr. Cohen’s professional music career was launched when Leopold Stokowski chose him as principal clarinet of the American Symphony Orchestra. As a recitalist and chamber artist, Mr. Cohen has participated in the Aspen, Blossom, Casals, Marlboro, Santa Fe, and Sarasota music festivals. He has also been a featured artist with many of the world’s leading chamber groups, including the Emerson, Guarneri, Takács, Tokyo, Miro, Miami, Orion, Shostakovich, Cavani and Ysaÿe string quartets and with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In addition, Mr. Cohen has collaborated with leading artists including Emanuel Ax, Pinchas Zukerman, Mitsuko Uchida, Richard Goode, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Jessye Norman, Menahem Pressler and Heidi Grant Murphy, among many others. Mr. Cohen has given countless master classes and seminars at prestigious universities and conservatories throughout the world. His former students hold principal positions in major orchestras in North America, Europe, Mexico and Asia. A passionate advocate of music education, Mr. Cohen founded and funded “The Concert Club,” introducing young musicians to world class artists and performances at Severance Hall. Mr. Cohen’s children are both members of the Calgary Philharmonic, Diana serves as concertmaster and Alexander is the principal timpanist.

SyMphony No.3 Saturday · 5 november 2016

Symphony No.3 op.90, F Major Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) Johannes Brahms (May 7, 1833 –April 3, 1897) was a German composer and pianist. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria. In his lifetime, Brahms’s popularity and influence were considerable and he is now considered one of the greatest composers in history. Brahms composed for piano, organ, chamber ensembles, symphony orchestra, and for voice and chorus. A virtuoso pianist, he premiered many of his own works. He worked with some of the leading performers of his time, including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim (the three were close friends). Many of his works have become staples of the modern concert repertoire. Brahms, an uncompromising perfectionist, destroyed some of his works and left others unpublished. Brahms is often considered both a traditionalist and an innovator. His music is firmly rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Baroque and Classical masters.

He was a master of counterpoint, the complex and highly disciplined art for which Johann Sebastian Bach is famous, and of development, a compositional ethos pioneered by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and other composers. Brahms aimed to honor the “purity” of these venerable “German” structures and advance them into a Romantic idiom, in the process creating bold new approaches to harmony and melody. While many contemporaries found his music too academic, his contribution and craftsmanship have been admired by subsequent figures as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg and Edward Elgar. The diligent, carefully constructed nature of Brahms’ works was a starting point and an inspiration for a generation of composers. Within his meticulous structures is embedded, however, a highly romantic nature. The Symphony No. 3 in F-major, Op. 90, was written in the summer of 1883, at Wiesbaden, nearly six years after he completed his Second Symphony. The symphony was well-received, more so than his Second Symphony. Although Richard Wagner had died earlier that year, the public feud between Brahms and Wagner had not yet subsided. Wagner enthusiasts tried to interfere with the symphony’s premiere, and the conflict between the two factions

nearly brought about a duel. After each performance, Brahms polished his score further, until it was published in May 1884. At the beginning of the symphony the motto is the melody of the first three measures, and it is the bass line underlying the main theme in the next three. The motto persists, either boldly or disguised, as the melody or accompaniment throughout the

movement. For the third movement – poco allegrettoinstead of the rapid scherzo standard in 19th-century symphonies – Brahms created a unique kind of third movement that is moderate in tempo and intensely lyrical in character. The finale is lyrical and passionate, rich in melody that is intensely exploited, altered, and developed. The movement fades away to a quiet ending.

AppalaCian Spring: Suite Saturday · 5 november 2016

Appalacian Spring: Suite Aaron Copland (1900 – 1990) Aaron Copland (November 14, 1900 – December 2, 1990) was an American composer, composition teacher, writer, and later in his career a conductor of his own and other American music. Instrumental in forging a distinctly American style of composition, in his later years he was often referred to as “the Dean of American Composers” and is best known to the public for the works he wrote in the 1930s and 1940s in a deliberately accessible style often referred to as “populist” and which the composer labeled his “vernacular” style. Works in this vein include the ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo, his Fanfare for the Common Man and Third Symphony. The open, slowly changing harmonies of many of his works are typical of what many people consider to be the sound of American music, which evoke the vast American landscape and pioneer spirit. In addition to his ballets and orchestral works, he produced music in many other genres including chamber music, vocal works, opera and film scores. Appalachian Spring has achieved widespread and enduring popularity as an orchestral suite. Originally composed for a ballet, it was scored for a thirteen-member chamber

orchestra and was created upon commission of choreographer and dancer Martha Graham with funds from the Coolidge Foundation. It premiered on Monday, October 30, 1944, at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, with Martha Graham dancing the lead role. The story tells of a spring celebration of the American Pioneers of the 19th century, after building a new farmhouse. Among the central characters are a bride, a groom, a pioneer woman, a preacher and his congregation. Copland’s score won both the New York Music Critics’ Circle Award and the 1945 Pulitzer Prize. The piece then became a landmark in American music. In 1945, Copland was commissioned by conductor Artur Rodzinski to rearrange the ballet as an orchestral suite, preserving most of the music. Copland cut about 10 minutes from the original 13-instrument score to make the suite. The most recognizable theme in the work is based on the Shaker tune “Simple Gifts.” The orchestral suite is divided into eight “scenes”: Introduction of the characters; setting a religious tone; the bride and groom; the revivalist preacher and his f lock; the bride’s presentiment of motherhood; transition reprising the introductory music; daily activity of the bride and her farmer husband; and the couple taking their place in their new house among their neighbors. The close is again reminiscent of the opening motifs.

Clarinet Concerto No. 2 Saturday · 5 november 2016

Clarinet Concerto No.2 Óscar Navarro (1981–present)

Franch-Ballester. The work was written between November-December 2011 and January 2012.

Óscar Navarro was born in 1981, in the village of Novelda, Spain where he began studying music at an early age. He received the “Outstanding Award” after completing his preliminary music studies, and was awarded both an honorary mention and a distinction at the end of his bachelor degree in the Conservatorio Superior Oscar Espla in Alicante, Spain.

The concerto is in one movement with three clearly identifiable sections. In the majority of the piece, the language is tonal with lots of colors and rich orchestration. The work displays the many technical capabilities of the clarinet, often prompting comparison of the instrument to the human voice.

Óscar continued his studies of composition and conducting at the Allegro International Music Academy of Valencia, with his mentor and friend Ferrer Ferrán. Shortly thereafter he was selected by the prestigious University of Southern California Thornton School of Music to study Scoring for Motion Picture and TV. In Los Angeles he studied under the tutelage of many renowned composers who have created the memorable cinema themes of the last several generations. Óscar was recently awarded the “Hollywood in Music Award,” in the classical music section. His film music has received many award nominations, including for the “10th Cinematography Music Critics Awards,” “Mundo BSO Awards,” and the “XIII GoldSpirit Awards.” In February 2014, he received a GOYA nomination from the Spanish Film Academy for his soundtrack for the film “The Mule.” The Second Concerto for Clarinet and Symphony Orchestra was a commission of the Valencia Music Institute and dedicated to clarinetist José

The first section of the work is written in two tempos, a cantabile style tinged with ethnic/new age rhythms, then the second, completely contrasting flavor

of typical flamenco music of Spanish folklore. This latter is accompanied by one of the instruments used in the world of flamenco, the palms. The second section, with a minimalist touch, exploits the dynamic possibilities of expression of the clarinet. The pianissimo and high level of expression tend to hypnotize the listener until an energized climax gives way to an ethereal, floating impressionism. The last section, prestissimo, is framed as a frenzied dance where soloist and orchestra engage in a dialog that demonstrates the challenging virtuosity of the work.

High School TOur Some local students experience symphony for the first timE By Jessica Perkins

A

t the heart of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra’s mission is a desire that all students should be given the privilege of hearing and seeing a symphonic orchestra perform live. That passion fueled the development of PSO’s High School Tour that launched in October 2015 at two area high schools.

Under the direction of Maestro Raffaele Ponti, students at Paducah Tilghman High School and McCracken County High School were presented with the opportunity to hear the PSO perform at their schools. For many students this experience was the first and, perhaps only, opportunity they will have to experience such musical excellence face to face. “As an educator, I believe that giving this experience to kids is like giving them a new book or taking them to an art film or a museum,” Maestro Ponti says. “How do you know if you like or don’t like something until you experience it?” 24

“Music is so important,” John Lovell, head band director at McCracken County High School says. “The arts in general speak to the kids who are sometimes left out of athletics. You learn team skills and tools that will help you be successful in life.” Paducah Tilghman High School principal and former PTHS band director Art Davis was impressed by the production. “Music challenges your mind,” Davis says. “It makes you think.” Davis credits music education with helping students

learn discipline, improving coordination and listening skills, and providing students with a well-rounded education. After a successful inaugural year in 2015, this year’s High School Tour was presented at Ballard Memorial High School. The concert was held on Friday, October 14. Students of Ballard County Middle School were invited to attend the performance as well. Relevant and recognizable selections were played, featuring music from such film scores as Star Wars, ET, Apollo 13 and many more. While an important element of the high school tour was student attendance at the concert, student participation was also emphasized. Students from the high school’s band and choir were invited to perform “My Old Kentucky Home” alongside the PSO during the event at their high school. Maestro Ponti worked with the students leading up to the main event. “This program levels the playing field for many of these students, allowing music kids to look like rock stars to their peers,” Maestro Ponti says. “With this, everyone has a chance to succeed. It’s a win-win.” For more information on PSO’s educational mission and opportunities please contact PSO’s Operations Manager Janine Zerger at 270.444.0065.

PSO invites public to the Crescendo Dinner By Casey Northcutt Watson

he best fundraisers feature music and food. The best auctions include pie.

Paducah Symphony Orchestra’s Crescendo Dinner on February 18, 2017, combines it all. An inaugural event, the dinner will give orchestra supporters opportunities to donate toward PSO while enjoying a meal and a concert. Event organizer Mickey Brown says the Crescendo Dinner also offers people a fun event to anticipate during the colder season. “This event is special because it’s an invitation to shake off the winter blues and enjoy gourmet food and entertainment,” she explains. The night of the Crescendo Dinner, cocktails will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the meal will be served at 6 p.m. in the Carson Center’s River Room. Seating is limited. The event will include delicious dishes prepared by local caterer Artisan Kitchen. During dinner, PSO will host a wine grab for attendees. Participants can purchase 32

gift-wrapped wines for $20, taking chances on the vintage. Under the wrapping, one might find anything from an ordinary, $20 vino to an exquisite wine costing upward of $100. Diners can also bid on their own desserts in a postdinner auction. There’s nothing like a little competition to sweeten a pie. The PSO concert will then start at 7:30 p.m. The orchestra will treat audience members to the energetic Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez. Famous flautist Eugenia Zukerman will join the performance, as well, for both Danzón No. 2 and Jacques Ibert’s Flute Concerto. The evening will end with the passionate Symphony in D Minor by César Franck. Tickets for the dinner portion of the evening cost $75 per person, while tickets to the concert cost $19, $36 or $46, depending upon seating. Those interested can purchase them online at www.paducahsymphony.org or by calling the PSO office at 270.444.0065.

Making Music Nashville Style Teaches Budding Paducah Songwriters

ashville-based songwriter Jeff Dayton likes to get one thing straight right at the beginning with elementary school students who are taking part in his Making Music-Nashville Style Residences:

He does not know Taylor Swift. He did, however, know Prince, the pop culture phenomenon that made the world rain purple until his untimely death in April of this year.

34

“Yeah, he used to borrow my guitar for some of his early demos,” Jeff says of the intersection of the two artists’ early careers. “I like to use that story to illustrate that any of them could have a dream at an early age and follow that into a career.” In late September, Jeff found that the students at McNabb Elementary in Paducah were quite impressed by his Prince-ly connections. It was the start of a twoweek residency where Jeff taught songwriting and

team-building basics to fourth and fifth graders at McNabb and Reidland Intermediate Schools as part of his Making Music Nashville Style Residency. Jeff established the residency in 2010 and has taken it all over the nation, from Minnesota to Florida and across the ocean to Hawaii. “Students are usually exposed to music through performance or audience participation. Jeff’s program utilizes a fresh and unique approach to music education that allows them the opportunity to participate in the creative process. The results are truly amazing,” said Janine Zerger, Operations Manager, who previously worked with Jeff in the Glen Campbell Organization. Paducah Symphony Orchestra — Score SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2016

has built a career touring with Glen Campbell as band leader for 15 years, playing with Kenny Chesney, backing artists like Vince Gill, Willie Nelson and Toby Keith, producing music for legendary artist Buck Owens and writing songs that were cut by Music City stars George Strait and Doug Stone. Jeff has only one rule for his residency: no adult cowriters allowed.

Janine hopes the PSO’s Artist-in-Residence Program will continue to grow in the future. Jeff has never experienced a residency sponsored by a local symphony and was impressed with the PSO as a benefactor for his program. “For the Symphony, it shows that they are committed to sharing with the community, not just by having people buy tickets and then paying their musicians, but much more than that,” he said. “This shows that they are interested in spreading the goodwill through the region.” Jeff’s program is beautiful in its simplicity: students are broken up into small groups and they work within these groups throughout the week to write and refine songs in genres that appeal to them and their team. They often look at him with bewilderment at the beginning, with some even coming up after his initial “getting-to-knowyou concert” to say that they don’t even know how to start to write a song. “As an analogy I tell them it’s as if we are camping, and I ask them to go and get me materials to build a campfire and then I will help them build that campfire,” he says of the doubtful. “You bring me the materials and we’ll build the campfire together.” And a master campfire builder Jeff is. He started writing and performing songs when he was in his teens and 36

“I don’t supply the ideas and I don’t let the teachers be cowriters,” he says, noting that students at McNabb wrote songs titled “Life on a Big Blue Rock” and “We the People” during their residency and that Reidland students chipped in with songs such as “Swagger like Jagger,” “Waterfall” and “Homework.” “Sometimes parents want to chime in, but I say ‘It’s just the kids, folks.’” And, while Jeff never ceases to be amazed by the end result of the writing sessions which culminate in a concert where students are able to debut their songs to an audience of their peers with Jeff serving as accompaniment on his guitar, it’s really the teambuilding aspect of the residency that he values the most. “The fun of building a team is unparalleled in my opinion,” he says. “These kids, a lot of them may not be part of anything. I especially love to bring out the engagement from kids who are the quiet ones in the back, who don’t want to talk or don’t do their homework or don’t want to participate.” “I go for the kids who are a little more reluctant and then the magic happens when they get to become part of the group and they get some pride in the song and they get a joy out of their product. When they’ve got something tangible to show the world, that’s just priceless.” Chris Thornton, director of music for Reidland Performing Arts at Reidland Intermediate and Reidland Middle Schools, says that the experience for him and his students was “overwhelming” and a great counterpart to his regular music curriculum. “The biggest thing that students got out of it was just

being part of the creative process in music,” Chris said. “Most of the time we’re focused on notation; (Jeff) focused on creating the art from beginning to end. I think it will be something that will stick with them for their lifetime.” Chris was very impressed with the final songs that his students created during the residency.

FUNDING and FRIENDSHIP How a relationship formed between a musician and his sponsors By Casey Northcutt Watson

T

he lights come up in the Carson Center. Morgan Kinslow puts down his tuba after performing his final notes of the night with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra (PSO). The audience claps uproariously. From the stage, Morgan sees a sea of people stretching out into the auditorium, and somewhere among those smiling faces is a couple that supports his personal work—his individual piece of the orchestra. There’s no relationship quite like that of a musician and his chair sponsors. PSO offers opportunities to personally support principal musicians on a concert-by-concert basis. The donations help pay musician salaries. Chuck and Retta Folsom have sponsored Morgan’s seat during every concert for the past four years. “To get the designation as a principal musician is one thing, but to find out that somebody cares enough to put down x-amount of dollars to sponsor your chair each season, that’s, of course, an entirely different level,” Morgan says. Morgan met Retta several years ago while he worked at Music Zone, a former music store in Lone Oak. Retta asked the musician to play his tuba for children at the McCracken County Library. He agreed, and a friendship began. 38

“Hearing him play up close was a great experience for the children as well as the adults,” Charles remembers. “He is so musically proficient. A good time was had by all.” Several years ago, the Folsoms heard about the opportunity to sponsor PSO chairs. They thought of Morgan and his incredible talent, and, as dedicated orchestra supporters, they decided to back him. When Morgan heard the news, Charles says, the tuba player approached him with a grin on his face and a tear in his eye. “He was so happy that someone would sponsor his instrument,” Charles says. Since that day, the Folsoms have avidly supported Morgan, and their friendship has only deepened. Morgan says he sees his sponsors here and there at the Carson Center. Charles, a PSO board member, is normally behind a camera, taking pictures of rehearsals or recording concerts. They talk often. Morgan also frequently sees Retta, who serves on PSO’s education committee, in the Carson Center parking lot after rehearsal. He says her face lights up when she spies his. The couple never hesitates to encourage him, and their kindness and care have seen him through tough times.

Paducah Symphony Orchestra—Score November/December 2016

“They have been with me through the loss of both of my parents,” Morgan says. “They made it with me through a divorce a few years ago, and they really have been, kind of, a stability for me.” Morgan states that the chair sponsorship has not only helped him establish a great relationship with the Folsoms, but it’s also a unique way for the general public to get involved with the orchestra’s music. Instead of simply sitting in the Carson Center’s plush seats and enjoying the pieces, patrons can actually play significant roles in making the music happen. A sponsorship for the concertmaster costs $600, while sponsorships for the assistant concertmaster and for the principal chairs are $300 per performance. Available chairs include violin, viola, violoncello, contrabass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, timpani, harp, percussion and keyboard. Sponsors receive acknowledgement on the Orchestra Personnel Page in each concert program, along with invitations to concert rehearsal dinners. Charles Folsom says these donations are excellent ways to support local artists, as well. “The musicians that have chair sponsors are so proud,” he explains. “And, it’s a great way for us to show our pride and appreciation for what they do.” That pride and appreciation has helped PSO fill Paducah with music for years. And, for Morgan and the Folsoms, that generosity has led to lasting friendship, as well.
