I

’m very excited to be writing this letter for the first time since becoming your Executive Director in January. We have a very busy and exciting spring schedule of activities.

We are looking forward to our season finale concert on April 22, Brahms’ Requiem. This concert will feature the Paducah Symphony Orchestra, Paducah Symphony Orchestra Chorus, invited regional choirs as well as two featured soloists. Then on Sunday afternoon, April 23rd you will be in for a treat with the Spring Youth Showcase concert at 3:00 p.m. This concert will feature students in our Fiddler’s Philharmonic ensemble, Youth and Children’s Choruses and students from area orchestra programs. Support our students as they demonstrate all the skills they have learned this past year. Our Children’s Chorus had a great performance at the Kentucky Music Educators Association conference in February. As a result, they have been invited to perform with the Louisville Youth Choir for the celebration of their 50th anniversary. Anyone who has had the opportunity to see and hear the Children’s Chorus in their recent concerts are amazed at the talent and stage presence these young people show. We are very proud of our Children’s Chorus and applaud them for this well-deserved invitation. On June 17th, I’m proud to announce that PaBREWcah is back! Last year was a success and we are looking forward to an even bigger success this year. The Beat Beethoven 5K that we all know and love is now part of PaBREWcah, taking place the morning of the festival at 8:00 a.m. We are thrilled to be partnering with our friends at Paducah Running and Cycling Company to bring this event to our festival. Once again, the Paducah Symphony Orchestra is proud to offer Summer Music Camp and it will take place the week of June 19th. Camp is a major component in our education programing and has become a summer tradition for our youth in grades 4-12. Attendees will gain valuable large ensemble experience and have the opportunity to sharpen their skills through elective courses. For more information about camp, please visit paducahsymphony.org. Last but not least, we have been hard at work preparing for the 2017-18 concert season which you will read about on page __. Season subscribers and donors get a glimpse of what’s to come on April 20 at our Season Preview as Maestro Ponti and myself unveil the music of next season as well as other great activities the PSO has in store. We here at the PSO can’t wait to see you again this summer at these exciting events! We appreciate all of your support this past season and look forward to a great 2017-18 season.

BRAHMS’ REQUIEM SATURDAY • 22 APRIL 2017

EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833-1897) Johannes Brahms (May 7, 1833 –April 3, 1897) was a German composer and pianist. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria. In his lifetime, Brahms’s popularity and influence were considerable and he is now considered one of the greatest composers in history. Brahms composed for piano, organ, chamber ensembles, symphony orchestra, and for voice and chorus. A virtuoso pianist, he premiered many of his own works. He worked with some of the leading performers of his time, including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim (the three were close friends). Many of his works have become staples of the modern concert repertoire. Brahms, an uncompromising perfectionist, destroyed some of his works and left others unpublished. Brahms is often considered both a traditionalist and an innovator. His music is firmly rooted in the structures and compositional techniques of the Baroque and Classical masters. He was a master of counterpoint, the complex and highly disciplined art for which Johann Sebastian Bach is famous, and of development, a compositional ethos pioneered by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and other composers. Brahms aimed to honor the “purity” of these venerable “German” structures and advance them into a Romantic idiom, in the process creating bold new approaches to harmony and melody. While many contemporaries found his music too academic, his contribution and craftsmanship have been admired by subsequent figures as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg and Edward Elgar. The diligent, carefully constructed nature of Brahms’ works was a starting point

and an inspiration for a generation of composers. Within his meticulous structures is embedded, however, a highly romantic nature. For many years Brahms had been preoccupied with the idea of composing a Requiem, but only in 1866, when he was 33, did he begin serious work on it. It was completed the following year with the exception of the fifth movement, which he added later in order to achieve a more balanced structure. In its incomplete form Ein Deutsches Requiem was first heard in Bremen Cathedral on Good Friday, 1868. The final version was performed the following year at Leipzig’s famous concert-hall, the Gewandhaus. Brahms may have written the Requiem in memory of his mother, who died in 1865; it is equally possible that he had in mind his great friend and mentor, Robert Schumann, whose madness and tragic death had profoundly affected the young Brahms. The composer himself gave no indication of whose memorial the Requiem might be, if indeed it was any one person’s. As with all great music, the universal message of its vision transcends the circumstances of its conception. The work’s title reflects Brahms’ use of the Lutheran Bible rather than the customary Latin one. He compiled the text himself from both Old and New Testaments, and from the Apocrypha. It has little in common with the conventional Requiem Mass, and omits the horrors of the Last Judgement – a central feature of the Catholic liturgy – and any final plea for mercy or prayers for the dead. It also makes only a passing reference in the last movement to Christian redemption through the death of Jesus. Not surprisingly, the title of “Requiem” has at times been called into question, but Brahms stated intention was to write a Requiem to comfort the living, not one for the souls of the dead. Consequently, the work focuses on faith in the Resurrection rather than fear of the Day of Judgement. Despite its unorthodox text, the German Requiem was immediately recognized as a masterpiece of exceptional vision, and it finally confirmed Brahms’ reputation as a composer of international stature.

imple and elegant, the podium behind which Artistic Director and Conductor Raffaele Ponti has stood while creating some of the best orchestral performances that our town has ever seen, is meant to stand in the shadows, to be useful without being recognized.

To achieve what David calls the “traditional burgundy coloring” that Raffaele requested for the podium, he used cherry wood, which was locally sourced through a sawmill in nearby river town Cairo, Illinois.

And yet, its very existence should be not only recognized, but also celebrated. After all, it is an integral tool for the man who leads the music and, as well, to the men and women of the orchestra who create it. Born six years ago when Maestro Ponti joined the PSO, the podium’s design was the brainchild of the conductor himself along with Paducah-based builder David Weishaar. David remembers the night that he met the new conductor and the pair got to work. “We sat around over drinks and discussed what he’d like,” he recalls. “We pulled up pictures off the Internet of various podiums and we put together the features from a few of them and came up with our own design.” For his part in the creation, Maestro Ponti calls their

In his woodworking business, David calls the project a true one-of-akind, despite his decades of custom work. In fact, the piece is so “custom” that David measured Raffaele’s height to ensure that it rose into a perfect spot in the conductor’s back when he faced the orchestra. The podium’s anonymity (even though it does carry a plaque that holds both David’s name and the name of Eric Small, the donor who funded the project) is not lost on David, who seems to hold it up as part of its charm. “It’s always nice to be able to contribute to something local like the Symphony and have your work showcased in front of a lot of people, even though a lot of people don’t know that I built it,” he says. As for Raffaele, he minces no words about the podium’s uniqueness. “The fact is that I stand on a lot of podiums,” he says. “But this one is different because this one is a piece of art.”

A Symphony of Flavors By Jessica Perkins

PaBREWcah offers craft beer lovers the TASTES they crave 24

Paducah Symphony Orchestra—Score April/May 2017

A

sk just about anyone who attended the Paducah Symphony Orchestra’s signature fundraising event PaBREWcah last year and they’ll tell you that the event turned their taste buds on to craft beers and breweries they might never have experienced before.

“I was really taken aback by all of the breweries there are in our region,” says festivalgoer David Troutman. “I tried beers that I had never had before and from brewers I’d never sampled. It was very cool.” At PaBREWcah, attendees purchase a card that entitles them to 10 four-ounce tastings brewed by a variety of local and regional brewpubs. This year’s event includes craft beer from Paducah’s own breweries Dry Ground Brewery and Paducah Beer Werks as well as regional favorites such as Rhinegeist, Apocalypse, White Squirrel, Tin Man, Ethereal and Schlafly. Those who wish to sample more beer may purchase additional tastings throughout the event. Brewmaster and owner of Paducah Beer Werks Todd Blume says beer aficionados will enjoy the distinctive flavors that each of the participating breweries bring to this event.

As the trend for craft beer continues to expand across the country, event planners believe PaBREWcah attendance will grow to draw in more visitors and interest from around the surrounding states. “The more people we are able to reach through this event, the more support and awareness we are able to raise for the PSO,” Smith says. “It’s all about making that first connection so that we can tell them about everything the Orchestra has to offer.” Traditionally, one has not paired a love of classical music with a love of beer. However, as smaller, independent brewers continue to fine-tune their craft, music and beer lovers find a growing number of commonalities. “There is a natural comparison between craft beer and symphonic music,” Troutman says. “The Symphony isn’t just a drum and a guitar; it’s composed of a group of musicians all working together to produce a dynamic, multi-layered sound. Craft beer is much the same. It fuses a variety of flavors and influences to create a more refined product. There’s a lot going on in both.” Troutman, like many craft beer enthusiasts in the region, is thrilled to see Paducah opening its doors to such a vast number of local and regional craft breweries. And if drinking beer means he’s also able to support the PSO, then all the better.

“Everyone has a different palate, so we give them different choices that they can enjoy,” he says.

“The Symphony is one of the many great things we have in this town,” says Troutman. “Frankly, we’re lucky to have them. If we don’t support them now they won’t be around tomorrow.”

PSO’s executive director Katie Smith is excited to be part of this year’s planning. “Creating a stellar craft beer experience for those in our region is part of the fun of this event,” Smith says. “It makes sense that we would support our local and regional brew masters because we are all part of developing Paducah’s creative economy, an effort that Paducah has received national praise for.” Terrin Hayden also attended last year year’s event and enjoyed partaking of all the new flavors showcased there. She sees PaBREWcah as a way to introduce new people to the PSO’s many programs and to engage them with the organization’s mission. “This event makes beer lovers love the Symphony, and music lovers love beer. So it’s a win-win for Paducah,” Hayden says.

Blume echoes Troutman’s enthusiasm for Paducah’s cultural attractions. “It’s amazing that Paducah has a symphony and a place to play,” he says. “And they put on a great beer festival. So what’s not to like?” This year’s event will be held on Saturday, June 17, from noon to 5 p.m. on the site of Paducah’s downtown parking lot at the corner of 2nd and Broadway. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event. In addition to the afternoon tasting event, runners are invited to participate in a timed 5K run that will begin at 7 a.m. A one-mile fun run is also planned for families and children. PSO Children’s Choir Becomes the Youngest Group at 2017 KMEA Conference By Casey Northcutt Watson

U

nder the ornate arches of Louisville’s Cathedral of the Assumption, the 41 young voices in the Paducah Symphony Orchestra’s (PSO) Children’s Choir began to sing. Dressed in white shirts with red bowties and cummerbunds, they offered songs like Douglas Beam’s “I See the Moon” and John Purifoy’s “Cold of Winter.”

But, a few singers felt nervous, despite their full, clear tones. Ranging from age 8 to 13, the choir included the youngest performers in the cathedral. Nevertheless, Dr. Bradley Almquist, their director, said they sang beautifully. “I was truly humbled by their performance and proud to be standing in front of them,” he recalled. On Feb. 10, PSO’s Children’s Choir performed at the annual Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) Professional Development In-Service Conference in Louisville. The entire

event ran from Feb. 8-11 and featured both workshops and performances. Participants could take classes on subjects such as band, orchestra, choir, music technology and more. They could also enjoy performances from bands, orchestras and choirs—most of which were affiliated with Kentucky schools. PSO’s choir was the only children’s group in the 2017 program. Cindy Poat, a member of the group’s parent leadership team, said she had never heard the young singers sound as good as they did that night. She loved that her daughter, Leah, could take part. She said Leah and her friends felt proud, as well. “The younger ones, I don’t know that they really comprehended the honor, but the older ones … they knew what an honor it was,” she said. “Around here, that’s a goal—to be able to audition and go to KMEA. Once you get into middle school and high school, that’s the ultimate goal.”

The choir received an invitation to perform for the Professional Development In-Service after Almquist submitted an audition recording last year. KMEA doesn’t release details about how many groups audition. But, Almquist says February’s performance was the first time the PSO Children’s Choir had sung for KMEA, except for an instance in 2006 when the group assisted him during a presentation. Devonda Treece, the accompanist for all PSO choirs, watched the children throughout their rehearsal and

And she smiled as they stood before the audience, singing “I See the Moon.” She felt they had earned their place on that stage.

“It was a great experience for them because they had worked very hard and then they saw the rewards of that coming to fruition,” she said. Dr. Almquist said KMEA rules prohibit him from sending another audition recording to the Professional Development In-Service Conference for another two years, so the choir wouldn’t return immediately. Instead, it would focus on performing for local and statewide choral events. But whether it includes a KMEA performance, each year in the PSO Children’s Choir gives students valuable knowledge and appreciation for music. Almquist, Poat and Treece believe the group offers a unique experience for young singers—one that instills a love for song that can last for decades.

I’m originally from Oakland, California, but I say I’m from everywhere. As a military kid, I have moved a bunch. I have lived in 10 cities, five states and one foreign country. What brought me to Paducah was the position with the Orchestra. What were you doing before you came to PSO? I was working with two nonprofit organizations - the Tennessee Soybean Festival and Letters in Motion, both in Martin, Tennessee. Paducah is filled with fun spaces to explore. What have you explored lately?

Proud to support the Paducah Symphony Orchestra!

I’m a foodie at heart so I have been enjoying all of the great restaurants in town. I love walking the Greenway Trail and I have been having a great time getting to know more about all the arts organizations Paducah has to offer.

Rotary Club of Paducah

What do you do for fun? I love going to the symphony and organizing events. Oh, wait! I do that for a living now! I would like to get back into sewing. I used to make some of the gowns I wore onstage during the years I was actively performing as a musician. Perhaps I will make something to wear onstage for our 2017-18 season opening concert.

paducahrotary.org

As a military “brat” you have traveled to all sorts of places. What’s the most interesting city you’ve lived or visited? That’s a tough call. Every place I have ever lived or visited had things about it that were unique or interesting. Some standouts are Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon, Arizona, Racife, Brazil, and Edinburgh, Scotland, American Samoa and New Zealand. What has surprised you the most about Paducah? I am surprised, mostly, by the number of high-quality arts organizations there are here. It has been impressive to see all that this city has to offer its residents and visitors and I can’t wait to get out and experience more of what our sister arts organizations are doing in the community. When talent meets discipline…

the story of Kaler Luker By Jamie Sears Rawlings

Great musicians happen when talent meets discipline and the two rise together.

T

–Shelly Berg, jazz composer here perhaps has never been an ideal more fitting for Paducah Symphony Orchestra Fiddlers Philharmonic student Kaler Luker.

Steve Schaffner, director of the PSO Fiddlers Philharmonic, calls Kaler a “very disciplined” student who is “over-the-top polite and respectful” as well as “uber optimistic.”

According to Steve, for the past two years that Kaler has participated in the Fiddlers Philharmonic, the group has benefited from one of the viola player’s qualities in particular. “When you have got somebody like Kaler who leads by example, it really sets a good example for the younger guys in the group,” he says. It is this knack for leadership that has propelled Kaler into the next chapter of his life, having been recently accepted as a student in the next class at the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point. Kaler, a soon-to-be graduate of Graves County High School, began playing viola in elementary school as part of the Graves County Orchestra, cheered on by his parents, Marshea and Aaron. According to Kaler, his musical training took on another layer when he joined the PSO Fiddlers Philharmonic Program his junior year. “It’s a whole other field when it comes to training,” he Paducah Symphony Orchestra — Score April/May 2017

says of the program. “The teaching and instruction there is amazing. I learned so much from Mr. Shaffner that I had never learned in my music career. He taught me so much when it comes to playing my instrument and how to participate in an orchestra.” Since Kaler is from Graves County, he values, as well, the opportunity that the program gave him to meet and learn from other peer musicians in the region. Marshea says that she recognized another change in Kaler’s musical training when he joined the Fiddlers Philharmonic. “It was more fun for him. The way Steve approached the practices on Sundays, Kaler enjoyed the music that he presented to him and everything about it. It was so much more fun for Kaler,” she recalls of his years with the PSO. Kaler has a solid career plan already laid out for himself, one that he hopes will allow him to continue his musical training while at West Point. “I am going to try my best to get into their music program,” he says. “I really love music.” After graduation, Kaler says he will be commissioned in the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant and plans to apply to law school with the hopes of becoming a Judge Advocate General in the Army. Marshea believes that her son’s musical training has given him some necessary skills to be able to achieve his dreams. “In music, it takes tenacity and practice to make sure that you excel, and I think that’s going to bleed over into his military career as well.”  34

The New Classics By Jessica Perkins

The 2017–2018 PSO Season blends america’s favorite popular music with exciting classical selections

F

or those seeking to engage with music in a fresh, exciting way, the Paducah Symphony Orchestra’s 2017-18 season is sure to capture hearts and enliven the spirits of those who attend this year’s performances. Artistic Director and Conductor Raffaele Ponti has curated a magical season, which blends the beauty and richness of several well-known classical composers with the beloved familiarity of popular songs. The year 2018 also marks the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein. Many of his most popular works will be included at various points throughout the season.

“On every program we will feature compositions that everyone in the audience will recognize, and we’ll also introduce them to additional composers whom they’ll love, as well,” Ponti says. Making music fun and accessible to a broad range of people helps to open young minds and new doors to providing a deeper musical experience for even the most unlikely of music enthusiasts. This year’s performances include classical compositions, penned by a variety of notable composers, as well as a blend of popular jazz, Broadway musicals and familiar scores from film and television. “Every concert will feature a well-known and beloved 36

piece,” Executive Director Katie Smith says. “I’m genuinely looking forward to the February concert. John Williams is a hero of mine, and I think it’s important to note the integral role that orchestral music plays in film and television.” Here’s a look at the 2017-18 Paducah Symphony Orchestra season:

Porgy and Bess September 9, 2017 7:30 p.m. | Carson Center This concert features the sounds of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, an opera that took a daring artistic approach with its all-African American cast when first introduced on Broadway in the 1930s. Also featured in this program will be Leonard Bernstein’s Candide: Overture and Gionvanni Sgambati’s, Symphony No. 1. While audiences may be less familiar with Sgambati’s work, Ponti is confident that all “will be floored” by its brilliance.

Boléro October 14, 2017 7:30 p.m. | Carson Center October’s program features a series of classical compositions, including Ravel’s Boléro, and works by Howard Hanson, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Franz Liszt. Guest musicians from the pre-collegiate and collegiate divisions of PSO’s Young Artist Competition will perform alongside the Orchestra.

A Salute to Our Armed Forces November 18, 2017 7:30 p.m. | Carson Center In honor of our veterans, the November performance gives nod to some of the nation’s most revered composers and musicians, including John Williams, Aaron Copland, John Phillip Sousa, and many more. Much of the works featured in this evening’s program typify what many consider to be America’s most authentic sounds. Each piece is a testament of the pioneer American spirit and the unique voices that have formed the foundation of America’s rich, creative landscape.

A Holiday Celebration December 9, 2017 7:30 p.m. | Carson Center The concert hall will be filled with the cheerful sounds of the holidays, as voices sing popular winter classics ranging from “Sleigh Ride” to the “Hallelujah” chorus. Featured choruses include the Paducah Symphony Chorus, the PSO Children’s Chorus, and the PSO Youth Chorus.

PRESENTS

CONCERT PIANIST 3:00

P.M.

MAY 7, 2017

Randall Atcheson is the epitome of a musical Renaissance man. His gift of communicating the beauty of music in various forms has led to a decidedly versatile career as a much-sought-after artist in the classics as well as in pop and the sacred repertoire. This versatility was evidenced early in life when he was recognized as a prodigy on both piano and organ. He entered Samford University at age 12 and later was accepted at The Juilliard School where he became the only student in the history of Juilliard ever allowed to pursue and receive simultaneous degrees in piano and organ performance. Atcheson was the winner of the first Juilliard Organ Competition and subsequently gave the premiere performance on the new pipe organ in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Atcheson made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1991. Following that highly successful event, he was added to the distinguished international roster of Steinway Artists. The
