01. T H E S I S International Cruise Terminal, Kochi Project Type : Thesis / 5th yr (Final Sem) Location : Kochi, India Project Year : 2017 Area : 15 Acres

01

Cruise Terminal is a platform for the passenger’s trip of tourism. The Terminal serves as a worldclass International Cruise Tourism for both the passengers of arrival and departure. Why in Kochi? Kochi is known as a Queen of Arabian sea. The city is known for their cleanliness and natural beauty of nature. Kochi is one of the most attractive city for the tourist. Every year several of people from all over the world come to visit this city for the witness of the beauty of Queen of Arabian sea, Kochi. The International Cruise Terminal is a new cruise terminal in Kochi which will be located at Ernakulam wharf. The new cruise terminal will follow all International immigration standard operating procedures, which would mean a structure analogous to international airports. Presently, all cruise ships longer than 250m are docked at Ernakulam wharf where there are no immigration facilities. A cruise ship that is longer than 250m will have around 2,000 passengers. Makeshift immigration counters, which are made at the wharf for the immigration process for such a huge crowd of passengers, are highly unprofessional. 02

The site is on Willingdon Island Kochi. Cochin is the colonial name of Kochi, India, a major port city by the Arabian Sea on the southern part of India’s west coast.Kochi is one of the most popular places in Kerala. Cochin is famous for their port, their beaches, their cleanliness. Area Analysis Plot Area = 60702 Sq.m (15 Acres) (Achieve) Total Build Area Ground Floor = 11784 Sq.m First floor = 10978 Sq.m Second floor = 10158 Sq.m Total Buildup Area =32920 Sq.m Achived F.A.R. = .55 Total area of basement = 16.62 % (10083 Sq.m) 03

Ecological living on a budget There is an acute shortage of affordable housing Auroville which deters many good people from joining the community. The sacredgroves project was conceived to alleviate this problem with the construction of 108 new homes for newcomers,Aurovilians and long-term volunteers, in a manner consistent with The Mother’s vision for Auroville.

Ecological-Construction The sacred groves project offers an alternative model of construction by using the following elements:-reusing waste building rubble to construct house made of earth concrete - a much less cement. -intensive material. -recycling wood from packing crates. -reusing discarded petrol pump pipes for shuttering. -reusing tetra-pack cartons to make innovative furniture. -being mindful of our own construction waste by reusing, recycling and composting as much as possible. 38

1.Soil TEST is initially done to find out the amount of clay and sand in the soil The required amount of clay must be 5-20% whereas sand is around 60% The earthen walls are made of cob Cob is a earth containing proper amounts of sand, silt and clay that is mixed with straw for tensile strength The bottom plinth is made of earthcrete which is followed by cob from the sill above The walls start out at 2’ thickness and reduce by 6 on each floor above.

There are two main ways of laying the cob:-Normal method where the chunks are laid side by side perpendicular to the wall -Rib and spine method where the gaps are filled with rubble

2.Cob is prepared and premix is made by stamping on the tarps The cob is then subjected to three tests before the batch is declared to be usable

Crunch test The premix is made into a ball and crunched This indicates the presence of enough sand Drop test The premix is rolled into a ball which is then droppen on a spf surface from a height of 1 metre The ball should not crack or lose it shape completely Cigar test A cigar shape is rold both ends are held twisted and pulled Resistance indicates enough straws 40

Flooring

Earthen flooring The floor is the area in a house with which we have the most daily physical contact. An earthen floor is both functional and beautiful. The earthen floor we did has been adapted from both the europeanearth building traditions and the north american adobe tradition. Earthen floors are beautiful, non-toxic, extremely durable, easily repairable, inexpensive, kind to the planet, and can be tailor-made with local coloured clays.

Aquaponics

Aquaponics is essentially the tion of Aquaculture and Hyd Aquaculture, also known as ing, is the farming of aquatic such as fish, crustaceans, mo aquatic plants. Hydroponics is a method of plants using mineral nutrien in water, without soil. The id making an aquaponics syste collaboration with people fro ation. The plants are potted in A pl with holes at the base. The s placed with coco peit and co provides a light ground for th to grow. The water is checke for the ph levels, ammonia, nitrates. Because of the low of fishes the nitrate levels m which is compensated by ad high in nitrate contents for t being. There are about 300es in the pool which can eas 2000 fishes for this sort of sy fishes required for this syste ones that produce more exc this is used to produce the n the water. The fishes we are using are catfish.Tilapia and

Lime Chucky The story behind the lime is there are two type of lime extraction one is hydraulic lime (sea shell) and non hydraulic (stones). The non hydraulic ones are those we use for construction because it’s really stable .you need to heat the lime stones in 700 - 900 celcius and allow it to cool.

lime is eco friendly and it recquires less energy to produce than cement. The strength of the lime starts to increase after 70 years of the construction over.life span of building is more than 300 years. Which is also hihger than concrete. The walls for the trench is made of earthcrete. The flooring for the trench is made by broken tile peaces and earthcrete. Tetrapack sheets were used for the shuttering The lime plastering is very smooth even an ant can’t climb over it Example- Golkonde in pondicherry 42

LIGHT BOX/LIGHT HOUSE Lightbox is box which is used for product photography It is very useful and easy to carry in home for product photography. How does it work? Well, a photographer snaps a shot for his/her images but it's not easy to click a nice shot without a good background so for that photographer makes their studios for photoshoot either that can be for a portrait mode or landscape mode of photography. But it's not easy for everyone to make his/her studios for photography because it’s unfordable. So this lighthouse easy to make at home with cheap price and it helps to take professional images like a photographer clicks on his /her studios or either a perfect background. What’s new? Most of the people made this types of the lighthouse but being an architect it's important to make something new which will be more attractive and useful. 59

The material used in this lightbox are cardboard, white cartridge paper, tracing paper, cello tape and glue. The lightbox is open from front side because to click the images of the product and had been cut it from all sides and covered all the cut it sides with tracing paper. Here are the formation and final images of the lighthouse and also the final results from this lightbox.
