I hope by the time this publication reaches you, the weather is still as it is now, clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine. Of course this being April you can’t tell whether it will rain, snow or be perfect for barbeques. So I’m hedging my bets. We’re looking at some really important local issues this month, but most of our regulars are here. The good Dr Sue is taking a short break to recover form her hectic work life and Tony Millin has been travelling. Contrary to the mistaken belief, he and I are not one and the same person and I’ve got a certificate to prove it! Hope you enjoy the sun and take advantage of all the great things happening in Cardiff this month.

April Showers By Chantele Cross-Jones

Ah April showers, just as spring is getting settled and your breaking out the summer dresses, the rain comes back for a little shower to spoil your carefree fun! But why should the rain spoil your fashion fun, who says your can’t be fashionable whilst getting rained on.

Mint Velvet Biker Trench £149

So this month I decided to look for Mac’s, Brollies and Wellies that can keep you looking stylish right through until summer. This time I have chosen items at 3 different price points: budget, mid price and blow-out, to show you can be stylish no matter what your budget. For me a traditional Trench Coat will always be a go to item as it is elegant and classic. Usually made of waterproof fabric the design was claimed by both Burberry and Aquascutum in the 1900’s and was originally intended as a Army Officer’s Raincoat. I have chosen 3 similar coats all based on the original design and colour of a classic trench coat.

For my wellington picks I decided to look

for some great red pairs. I think red shoes add a wonderful splash of colour to an outfit and help brighten up a rainy day! F&F Spotted Wellies £12.50

And Umbrella’s! It’s the item most of us forget at the one time we need it! But hopefully having a pretty frilly brolly will mean you remember to take it with you everywhere. BHF £14.99

New Driving Academy launched on St. David’s Day. Drivewell Driving Academy was launched on St.David’s Day.

Sarah and Salvina are keen to get involved with the local community and are passionate about helping to have safer drivers on the road. After hours of deciding a name including approaching pupils from local schools Drivewell Driving Academy was agreed. Sarah said “we had tremendous fun we wanted a name we would use daily, in our lessons and something that pupils would be part of.”

The day of a Driving Instructor is so varied and never boring- every hour is different. It varies from teaching someone who has never been behind the steering wheel, to someone who wants to improve their confidence and skill. With today’s busy roads often drivers decide to have some motorway, advanced driver training, or even eco-driver training (with the increase in fuel prices). Sarah is also involved in delivering the National Driver Awareness course to drivers who have had an incident and wish to attend to avoid prosecution and have an opportunity to improve their driving skills. Salvina previously owned a local restaurant and like Sarah loves working with different people, making the job so interesting varying from a 17 year old to a driver in their nineties. Asked the most satisfying part of the job teaching a lifelong skill and the emotions of pupils when they hear from an examiner “I am pleased to say you have passed.”

Sarah and Salvina have both lived in north Cardiff for over 30 years and are keen to be involved with the local community. They have spent hours in local coffee shops recently discussing their new venture. They even have names for their cars Salvina’s Valentino as it arrived on Valentines Day, and Sarah’s -Taffy as it was transferred to from its previous life to DriveweIl Driving Academy on St.Davids Day.

Local History LLANISHEN’S TWO POLICE STATIONS The proposal to close the police station in Llanishen is a matter of concern to us all. Nobody today can remember the time when Llanishen could boast two police stations – both of them staffed, and located within a few doors of each other! This state of affairs existed during the integration of Llanishen into Cardiff Council when one policeman from the County and one from the City Constabulary shared responsibility for law and order in the village.

The County police station was Garth Villa, 167 Fidlas Road, where the village policeman was Sergeant Boothby, a man nobody would dare to cross. In an interview with this Society some years ago his son, Walter, had this to say about his father. “My dad was the village police sergeant. The boundary of Llanishen went from the top of Thornhill, out to Rudry and down as far as Roath tram terminus and across to Whitchurch tram terminus. He had two constables and their only transport was pushbikes. If they had to charge someone who was out, say, by the Unicorn in

Llanishen Local History Society

Llanedeyrn they would have to walk over to fetch him and then walk him to Whitchurch Road police station. Sometimes my dad would bring them back to our house and lock them under the stairs until he had time to take them to Whitchurch Road.”

In addition to that Judah and Sarah for a short while ran the village telephone exchange from their cottage. Telephones were unusual at this time and they had fewer than fifty subscribers but the work got too much for them to cope with and the exchange transferred in 1910 to a house opposite on Station Road

Llanishen was incorporated into Cardiff in 1922 when an officer from the City Constabulary arrived on the scene and the house next door to the Baptist Church on Fidlas Road became the City police station, occupied first by P.C. Murphy, and later by P.C. Hawke. Even before this time the White Cottage on the opposite side of the road had served as the village police station and jail.

Beyond the blacksmith’s was an open space with an orchard before the larger houses on Station Road which are still there today. The blacksmith’s and the orchards were a major feature of the village until the late fifties when they were demolished and replaced by the modern shops with the police station beyond.

The photograph shows Sergeant Boothby standing in Station Road around 1910. The horse is being taken to the whitewashed building on the left, probably to be shod, as part of this was the village smithy. The village blacksmith was Judah Cosslett who lived there with his wife Sarah and his daughters Margaret and Joan. The Cosslett family played a prominent role in the life of the village at the beginning of the century. Sarah was the village baker (taking advantage of the heat from her husband’s furnace to heat her oven), while Margaret taught music from her home, and Joan was a school teacher. The sisters were well-known for running popular concert parties in the village.

Meetings will start again in October but during the summer you can the find information about the Society on our website.

Ysgol y Wern School News Fairtrade Fortnight The school celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight in style by wearing the Fairtrade colours on the first day. We welcomed Elen Jones from Fairtrade Wales and Mrunal Lahankar from a Farm Co-operative in India. She spoke about the work of the cotton farmers in India and the importance of Fairtrade to her community. Mr Robin Samuel from Christian Aid came to the school to talk about Fairtrade and what we can all do to help. The Fairtrade committee at the school organized a Fairtrade shop which was immensely successful. Each class participated in various Fairtrade activities ranging from cooking flapjacks to designing recipes for snacks.

Marie Curie Pupils at Ysgol y Wern have been very busy over the last months growing daffodils for the Marie Curie Mini Pots of Care Campaign. We were very pleased to be able to hand over a cheque of ÂŁ1,570.00.

Urdd Eisteddfod The school has been busy competing at the Urdd Eisteddfod. At the East Cardiff Eisteddfod the following pupils won their competitions and will therefore be representing the area at the County Eisteddfod at the end of the month – Dafydd Chapman (piano and string), Ismay Evans (woodwind), Aled Evans(brass), Elen Morlais Williams (solo under 8) and Osian GutoThomas (folk song solo). The singing party also won their competition. The school had a very successful County Dance Eisteddfod with the disco/street dancing team, the folk dancing team and Megan Melbourne (individual disco/street) winning their competitions and now representing Cardiff and the Vale at the National Urdd Eisteddfod in Dyffryn Nantlle near Caernarvon at the beginning of June. We wish them all the best.

Thornhill Primary School News Tel 029 20751302 Chairing of the Bard Our St David’s Day celebrations were spread over two days to give all our pupils the chance to take part in competitions in dance, singing recitation, handwriting , art and creative writing. Children came to school in Welsh costume and took part in all sorts of Welsh themed activities- the delicious aroma of welsh cakes could be smelled the length of the building. There was even a special menu for school dinners. The Eisteddfod culminated in the chairing of the bard, chosen for her brilliant story.

Fairtrade Fortnight

Buddies

This year our pupils have been learning about Fairtrade coffee, bananas and cotton. Year 3s enjoyed taking the roles of farmer ,roaster, shipper, exporter and seller and deciding who deserved the biggest share of the £1 their teacher’s cup of coffee cost. They were surprised to discover that the farmer gets least and the roaster most. Year 6s had a visit from Mr Grant of Sainsburys who brought some fairtrade ingredients to make pancakes with the children.

Year 6 pupils had a meeting with their high school buddies who will help them with the transition to High School in September. They enjoyed a question and answer session which put lots of their anxieties to rest.

Llanishen Police Station Under Threat A shock proposal from the South Wales Police Authority to close Llanishen Police Station became public knowledge last month.

campaign, which has already received phenomenal support across the local community.

The Authority plans to sell off the Police Station and centralise resources at a new, large-scale facility at the redeveloped Maelfa Shopping Centre in Llanedeyrn.

Since launching the campaign, hundreds have signed up to the petition opposing the closure – by post, online and in person. Meanwhile, posters are going up in people’s windows all over the community.

Llanishen & Thornhill Conservatives responded to the controversial plans with the launch of the SOS – Save Our Station

A public meeting was also called at Llanishen Leisure Centre and was packed out

Andrew Graham, Richard John and Chris O'Brien meet with Conservative AM Andrew RT Davies at the launch of the campaign. Cllr Richard Foley was inside holding meetings with the Police.

by residents voicing concern at the Authority’s proposals. Llanishen & Thornhill Cllr Richard Foley, who launched the campaign, said: “The response to this campaign shows the strength of feeling which exists locally about the important role our Police Station plays in the community. We will fight tooth and nail to maintain a strong Police presence in the area. “The police precept is going up by 5 per cent in South Wales, so this is clearly not an issue of funding. The Authority feels that low footfall is instead a reason to sell the station but this move would remove an imposing crime deterrent and important public service from our local area”. Campaigner Chris O’Brien added:“Effective policing depends on local knowledge. We’ve been delighted to see crime fall dramatically in the local area in recent years – but there’s a big fear that moving our station to Llanedeyrn could undo years of hard work”. The campaign has received the backing of local Assembly Member Andrew RT Davies, who met with campaigners and Police staff at the Station within hours of the Authority’s proposal being made public. Local shops, businesses and even Cardiff Devils ice hockey club have also shown support for the campaign! Those opposed to the closure can sign the petition online at www.SaveLlanishenPolice.com. Paper petitions are also being handed out right across the local area. More information on the campaign, as well as other key local issues, can be found at www.YourLlanishen.com.

Spicy Salmon Pilaf

FOOD

Serves 4 Place the eggs in a pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 7 minutes. Drain and run under cold running water to prevent a black ring forming around the yolk.

Gently stir in the rice and curry paste, add the stock and bring to the boil. Cover the pan and simmer very gently for about 10 minutes until most of the stock has been absorbed by the rice. Fluff up the rice grains with a fork and add the salmon and peas. Cover and cook for another 5 minutes or so until the salmon is just cooked.

Heat the oil and butter in a large pan, add the onion and fry gently until soft and translucent. Add the pepper and fry for another 2 minutes.

Peel the eggs and cut into quarters. Spoon the pilaf into a serving dish, arrange the eggs on top and sprinkle with the chopped coriander.

Method Skin the salmon, cut into bitesize pieces and set aside.

Ingredients 4 small salmon fillets 4 eggs 1tbs oil 1 small knob of butter 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 red pepper deseeded and finely diced 300g Basmati rice 1tbs curry paste 600ml vegetable stock 200g frozen peas 1tbs chopped coriander for garnish

A BLIND TASTING

SWIG

Skinty & Minty

This tasting was to test the ability of members to see if they could detect the difference between a cheap wine and a more expensive wine and also to see if they were able to place the origin country of the wines. The wines were tasted in tandem and all bottles were concealed in blind tasting bags. The first a white, was well liked it had a pale colour, with flavours of green apples and lemon, some found it fruity but dry and others thought it was a bit sour on the taste, everyone guessed the country correctly as France and the grape as Chardonnay. It turned out to be a Chablis and everyone thought correctly that this one was the more expensive wine. It cost £10.00 from Asda. The second wine also white, was off dry, fruity with the aroma of lemons, a reasonable drinking wine, several correctly guessed the country as France and the grape as Chardonnay. Everyone voted this the cheaper of the two white wines. It was in fact a Piat d’Dor and cost £3.99 from Asda. The next wine was a red, members thought this had a pleasant nose but thought it thin, medicinal, dry, spicy and not particularly exciting, there was some dispute as to the grape varieties, Grenache and Syrah being mentioned, the comments being quite negative, no one guessed that It was a Châteauneuf du Pape Extra Special full bodied from Asda, costing

£13.27 this wine didn’t rate highly in the tasting. The comparison wine came from the same region, and seemed to have a more responsive vote. Grenache and Syrah being detected again – this wine was a Cotes du Rhone, £5.97 again from Asda and gained more votes than the more expensive wine. The next wine was a dark rich colour, jammy on the t a st e, ver y a l c oh ol i c everyone guessed correctly that it was from Australia in fact it was a Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet and was voted most expensive of the 2 wines at £9.48 from Sainsbury’s , it was also voted best wine of the tasting. The last wine was also from Australia although many thought it could have been a Pinot Noir – it turned out to be a Syrah from Australia, the majority preferred this one to the Penfolds, it was voted the cheaper wine and cost £4.48 from Sainsbury’s and came second overall in the tasting. Members agreed the tasting was very interesting with most guessing the grape varieties and countries correctly and thought the more expensive wines were better value overall.

A Day in the Life of The Voice delves into the life of Sian Gunney, a young entrepreneur from Cardiff. Sian is the founder of Peacock Media Group, a leading Marketing, PR and Creative agency based in the UK. As a full support agency, Peacock Media Group provides a comprehensive list of services including PR strategies, events, marketing plans, social media marketing, branding, advertising and video production, to name a few. We ask what challenges faced the Welsh born and bred entrepreneur, where she got her inspiration from and how she juggles both business and family life. How long have you been in business? Peacock Media Group, only operationally just over 6 months. Personally in Experiential Marketing and PR, over 10 years. What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them? Small independents with budget constraints or companies that look at the current climate and immediately cut back on marketing. Re-education If you look at any successful business person in the capital or across the world, these are the individuals that when financial times are difficult and everyone else goes quiet and steps back, they push forward and reinvest in this area creatively and expand. Ultimately these utilise intelligent strategies to gain market share and growth. I think my main challenge is when I first met with clients; they had been let down before by PR companies and marketing companies alike giving false promises. So I focus on stringent monitoring tools to demonstrate return on investment (ROI). I do hands on account management and training with social media and various techniques so that the client understands via participation and this gives companies the tools they need in order to (a) see the value (b) be able to gain knowledge on public usable tools and strategies in order to take this back in house as much or as little at a later date and not feel over-

whelmed. It’s all about transparency I always under promise and over deliver. We are unique in every way, no one else offers the same service we do to the same level. For us it’s all about being super-organised and strategic. Who or what inspired you to create Peacock Media Group? My driving force was my father Paul Malcom Gunney, who lost his fight to prostate cancer on the 28th October 2011 at the age of 59. Hence the company name PMG, he was my world and was and always will be my inspiration. I spoke about doing this since I was 15 he always wanted me to do it and when he got very ill in the last year he still encouraged me to be brave and take this step.

...Sian Gunney He owned a successful car garage and was an incredible business man who had the upmost integrity and was incredibly driven and hard working. I had the best role model I could of ever wished for and the most amazing father. What typical duties does your job role entail on a daily basis?

By Alaina Morgans

The thought of my dad and Family. My Mum, my sister & niece, my brother and my fiancé. If I keep getting results and gaining reputation and contracts by being a perfectionist. Then I can make sure that they never have to worry about anything again and I can look after them. What are you most proud of?

My company is my world so I live and breathe it 24/7! We love what we do and when you find a job you love you’ll never work a day in your entire life. No day to day is identical it varies quite dramatically. The team is now expanding we have two recent additions to the Cardiff team, 3 designers in Bristol and 1 researcher in London. So it could involve a full day’s meetings and training sessions between 6-7 sessions back to back. Or big pitch meetings and presentations and reviews with project milestones. Or a lot of social media management scheduling, listening in and networking among a whole host of social psychology tactics for relationship building. Or event management, design work, interviews or press calls, celebrity management or conference calls to NY times regarding new authors we are representing. In short there is no ‘typical day’.

Never giving up when it would have been the easiest

Our motto is “Let us give your company the Peacock Effect” So in order to achieve dedicated results and requirements for our clients no two campaigns or strategies will be identical.

How to you balance work with your family life?

Is it possible to describe a typical week in the life of Sian Gunney? No. No two days or weeks are the same. One week I could be interviewing a politician, the next day I could be taking Matthew Pritchard (Dirty Sanchez) – clothes shopping, next day I could be visiting Huggards centre or Fareshare Cymru, next day at a Cardiff Devils game. Next day training Dominos Pizza Managers on social media. Next day organising Olympic Torches from Beijing and Vancouver from Coca Cola to an event on Caerphilly Mountain, so you get the idea? What motivates you to go to work everyday?

thing in the world to do. Not listening to people saying you can’t because they hadn’t. I’ve made it my mission to support and encourage a lot of SMEs that just need a bit of oversight, direction and support and inroads to some incredible people in my contacts base. Can you describe for me one or two of your most important accomplishments? Increasing a clients sales by 150% in the first month after an event Quadrupling my turnover in less than 6 months and taking on my first member of staff.

I don’t. Now I have all my procedures and schematics in place and I am in a position to take staff on it is something I intend to address. However it’s early days and I love working I never want to do anything by half. So I’m just lucky, I live on my iphone, skype, my ipad and lap top and then I can manage everything from wherever I am. I only represent brands and individuals I truly believe in and I genuinely care about the clients gaining the most from my services. What do you do with any spare time you have left? Running, horse riding, cooking for my fiancé or my family. Walking and playing with my Chihuahua Coco.

Thornhill Legends Back row left to right : Martain Nicholls, Kevin Moss, Gareth Strange, Richard Opara ( Gaffa ) Nick Howe, David Chaplin, Rhys Foran, James Kirby, Richard Ward, Dale Webb, James Courtman Front row left to right Justin Amos, Neil Ingham, Tom Cornwall, Chris Marks, Richard Best, Andrew Kemp, Andrew Webb, Mark Weston, Gareth Thomas

The Legends XI, all former Thornhill AFC players took to the fields once again to face a select team from Thornhill Community Centre to raise funds for the Athletic Club in a friendly game. The challenges were many, from persuading older players to dust off the boots and stretch some ageing muscles, to competing on the same day a certain rugby game was being played as a Grand Slam decider. As you might expect the legends quickly got into their stride and despite some valiant early defending from the TCC, a team that has never played together before, the traffic was more or less one way. Dave Chaplin broke the scoring driving in from the left to deliver a sweet strike curling past the youthful Rhys Millin in goal. A combination of good fortune and some excellent goal-keeping were beginning to frustrate the Legends as half time approached but another clever move and a great strike, this time from Gareth Strange

doubled the lead at the break. The pitch at Thornhill was taking its toll on some of the older players. We did wonder whether time-team had been to visit recently, the mud was becoming such a major issue. In this half, the game opened up a little more, as the TCC let the youthful Dan Barnes free to run at some tired legs. Persistence finally paid off for the TCC when a stunning shot from Dave Gray brought the teams closer together and further efforts nearly levelled. The Legends eased their way ahead again though with more good strikes from Dave Chaplin and James Courtney the end the contest, although a low driving shot from the young Tom Hall made the score line a respectable 4-2 to the Legends. A great game played in fantastic spirits, no-doubt added to what turned out to be a wonderful day of sport for Wales.

Lisvane Player’s innovative Shakespeare Production

“All the World’s A Stage” Cardiff Drama Group, Lisvane Players, is one of the oldest in Cardiff and we are celebrating our Diamond Jubilee this year with a production called “All the World’s A Stage”. We are working on this performance with the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages project, and the Sherman Theatre as part of the “World Shakespeare” Festival.

“All the World’s a Stage” is directed by Liz Heaven and illustrates each decade of the past century with an extract from Shakespeare. From the 1900s (think the “Upstairs Downstairs” version of “Comedy of Errors”) to a twist on the modern day through “The Tempest”. Some scenes are emotional, like World War II depicted through “Henry V” with the famous speeches “Once more unto the breach dear friend” and “Upon St Crispin’s Day”, others we treat with humour, for instance the 1960s through a drug induced Midsummer Night’s Dream and the feel good era of dreamboats and petticoats, the 1950s, viewed through “Much Ado About Nothing”. Our innovative approach meant that we are one of only 16 in Wales and the West that attracted the attention of the judges. This has meant we have

been able to participate in several workshops with members of the RSC to hone our acting skills. Liz Heaven, Director, said “It is a real honour for the Lisvane Players to be working with the RSC on “All the World’s A Stage”. The production captures the essence of each decade through Shakespeare’s words. This performance is designed to make you laugh, cry and think. We have really enjoyed putting it together and hope that readers will come along and relish this very different show.” Michael Boyd, Artistic Director of the RSC, commented “The RSC, in partnership with a number of regional theatres and amateur theatre, will run a national programme of skills sharing events and showcases, with amateur societies from across the UK producing their own RSC branded Shakespeare themed productions.” Open Stages will culminate in a national celebration, where a selection of participants in the project will perform will extracts at the RSC in Stratford Upon Avon. The production is on April 27, 28 and May 4, 5 at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm), and a special Jubilee matinee on May 7 in Lisvane Memorial Hall (Tickets are £10 and can be bought by telephoning Angela on 029 2075 6660). If you would like to join the Lisvane Players we meet every Thursday at 7.30pm in Lisvane Memorial Hall. The RSC Open Stages Project is funded by Esmée Fairbearn Foundation.

Shingles – ProtectionFor the over 40’s There has been tremendous interest in the introduction of the Shingles Vaccination, now available from private medical clinics in the UK. The varicella zoster virus, the cause of chickenpox, can also in later years cause shingles. Once you have experienced chickenpox, the virus stays in your body lying dormant. Later in life, the virus can be reactivated, causing shingles. Shingles results in the virus travelling down nerve fibres to your skin resulting in painful blisters. Shingles can affect anyone who has previously had chickenpox, but you are more likely to get suffer from it if you’re over 40. The pain caused by shingles can be very severe This is called postherpetic neuralgia. Neuralgia is a sharp pain that follows the path of a nerve and is caused by irritation or damage to the nerve. Post-herpetic neuralgia is more common as you get older, Up to half of people who are older than 50 who get shingles will have some form of post-herpetic neuralgia. It usually goes within six months, but for many people the pain can last for many years. Reactivation of the virus seems to occur more often if you: • are over 60 • suffer from stress • have an illness that weakens your immune system • are receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy are taking treatments that suppress your immune system

Introduction of NEW vaccination for Shingles A Shingles vaccination is now available in the UK via private health clinics and it is recommended that anyone over 50 years of age should consider taking the treatment in order to protect themselves from the condition which can be both extremely painful and has the possibility of causing health problems over a sustained period of time. The new Shingles vaccination is now available from CCR Private General Practice. For more information visit www.privategpcardiff.co.uk
