Spring Feeling

By Chantele Cross-Jones

March is here and we are hopefully moving into warmer weather after a bitterly cold few months. So this month I thought we could look at spring/summer dresses. Dresses are the ultimate item of femininity and every women should own a selection for all occasions. What style of dress you wear should be dependent on firstly, what you feel most comfortable in, but also what suits your shape best. This season there are 2 major trends to look out for: Shades of pastel and vibrant retro prints.

Edwin Seward “DESIGNER OF MANY CARDIFF BUILDINGS” This was the very inadequate description given in the Cardiff Times in June 1924 when it announced the death of the architect Edwin Seward. Born in Yeovil in 1853, Seward was articled as architect and surveyor there and at the age of sixteen came to Cardiff where he had a very successful career until ill-health forced him to retire to Weymouth in 1915. Early in 1875 he entered into partnership with Walter Parry James and George Thomas and one of his first projects involved extensions to Insole Court where he added the north wing and the tower. Thereafter the firm James, Seward & Thomas was responsible for many of the significant public buildings being erected in Cardiff thereby making it a city of world-class architectural importance. It is impossible for anyone to walk around Cardiff today without being aware of the many buildings Seward designed, including the Royal Infirmary, the Free Library on The Hayes, the Coal and Shipping Exchange, the Union Workhouse on Cowbridge Road, (later to become St David’s Hospital), the Morgan arcade, Turner House Gallery in

Penarth, and the Plymouth Arms in St Fagans. So outstanding was his reputation that Seward must have had hopes that he would be responsible for the new national buildings being developed in the civic centre in Cathays Park at the beginning of the century, but the designs were put out to public competition and the commissions for them all went to London architects. He must have been a very disappointed man. Seward was prominent in the cultural and educational life of the city and was responsible for several art exhibitions. As a member of the Cardiff Naturalists Society, he was one of the group which investigated the ruins of Castell Morgraig about which we recently wrote. He was also an antiquarian and art collector who published many papers on archaeological and artistic topics. He collected works of art and antiquities and among his effects which were sold by Christie’s after his death was a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci which was sold for 115 guineas, a considerable sum at that time. In addition to his public buildings in the city Seward left two marks in our own area. Around 1899 he designed his own

Atomic Blondie Celebrating over 30 years of Blondie, and their induction into the rock n roll hall of fame in 2006, do not miss this explosive tribute! No other female fronted band has ever beaten Blondie with their string of hits and run of success. Blondie had six UK number one singles, two UK number one albums and six top ten albums, and Heart Of Glass alone sold over a million copies! Few acts can match their 20 year span of number one hits. Blondie emerged as the great pop icons of the late '70s new wave punk scene by defying easy categorisation. They scored their first major hits with reggae, rock/disco and hip-hop songs. They wrote great rock hooks and brilliant ironic lyrics. They had the hippest clothes and the coolest hair, blonde bombshell Debbie went from the pages of Punk magazine to being on the cover of just about every mainstream publication on the news stands! 2008 was the 30th Anniversary of the fantastic album Parallel Lines and saw Blondie performing a world tour including major UK sold out dates. Again, 2010 saw them coming back to the UK again on tour. Cardiff based Atomic Blondie, formed over 6 years ago, and now also hotly tipped as one of the UK's leading Blondie tribute bands, have performed all over the UK and Europe. Their impressive CV includes them also having the pleasure of featuring on tour with the legendary Slade and Roy Wood on a regular basis, plus performances with Showaddywaddy, Dr & The Medics, Bad Manners and shortly to be working with 80's Legends T-Pau! Our Debz has also had the pleasure of performing for top musician and member

of Yes Rick Wakeman plus an event for the cast of BBC 1's Eastenders (to name a few!). The Band consists of dedicated professional musicians all with years of experience. The Band includes Debz (Llanishen) on Lead Vocals who has been inpersonating Debbie Harry for over 8 years, Derek Bisset (Llanishen) who also has his own teaching studio in Llanishen and is one of S.Wales most sought after Drum Teachers, Aled Williams (Taffs Well) who is a Guitar Teacher and Paul Guy (Pen y Lan) who teaches Bass. May 2010 saw them play Europes biggest tribute festival where they were the only female fronted tribute to play the main stage over the three day event - this followed with them appearing in The Sun newspaper on the coverage of the event. From November 2010 to March 2011 Atomic Blondie's photo was also being used in major tabloid newspapers for advertising of a major hotel chain (including The Daily Mail and Express). The show features all the classic hits plus trademark Debbie Harry costumes, including the famous 'Bin Liner Outfit' and 'Vulture Tee' as seen in the video for Atomic. The band have studied Blondie in great detail to recreate the next best thing and make their tribute as authentic as possible. Including the hits Heart of Glass, Sunday Girl, Maria, Tide is High, Rapture, Hanging on the Telephone, Denis, Dreaming, Rip Her to Shreds, One Way or Another and many more, including recent versions from Blondie's 'Live By Request' TV Show in the USA.

Mission Accomplished

at Christ the King Primary School!

Staff and pupils at Christ the King School have been reflecting on their recent visit from the Sion Community Mission Team. The Team led children, Staff, Parents and Friends in a most memorable week of prayer, reflection, song, dance and worship. Each morning began with early morning prayer for Staff, followed by coffee time for parents and friends who met the Team members Cath, Allegra, Pete and Claire. Following the refreshing start to the mornings, the team of four worked with children in a lively and stimulating way, through key stage assemblies, year group work, and voluntary prayer aimed at providing the children with the opportunity to take a fresh look at their own faith and relationship with God no matter how young or old they were. One of the most thought provoking activities for the children was taking part in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Carefully one of the classrooms was transformed into a small chapel, where the children were invited in by Allegra to sit in the presence of God. There, each child was asked to place their trust in God, and just spend a few moments in silent prayer. Parish Priest Canon Matthew Jones was present during Adoration, and wrote in the parish newsletter: If ever I n eeded proof t h at ch i ldren “understand” Jesus and his ways - as he does theirs - it was there in that

room. The children also reflected upon the experience saying: ‘we saw Jesus before us’ and ‘I enjoyed speaking to God – it felt like I was at home.’ In complete contrast to the times of reflective prayer and meditation, Engel and Bert – the Mission Team’s camels – entertained the children with stories and songs which presented the Gospel message in an animated and original way. These stories, songs and dramas culminated with a presentation to parents and friends on the Thursday afternoon and evening. Christ the King Church ceiling was raised to the rafters as adults and children alike all joined for a final rendition of ‘Pharoah Pharoah’ to end the evening. Mass was celebrated in school by Canon Matthew Jones, and it was made even more special than usual by different parts of the liturgies being developed by the children with ideas they had explored during the week. The whole of the school community felt that it was one of the most uplifting experiences they had ever been part of. Children as young as five years old, stood in awe and wonder of God. The memory of this week will stay with all at Christ the King for a very long time – they have grown in faith, trust, love, and opened their eyes once again, to see the wonders of God.

A Wish to Walk Thomas is a happy 8 year old boy whose only wish is to be able to walk like his friends. Thomas was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 18 months old, which means he is unable to walk and normal day to day tasks require assistance. Thomas has been given the chance to undergo life changing surgery in St. Louis, USA which will mean he will be able to walk with a walking aid, something he can only dream about doing now. Unfortunately the surgery is not funded by the NHS in Wales and therefore the £60,000 required to get Thomas and his family to the USA for this pioneering neurosurgery, additional orthopaedic surgery and the aftercare required to ensure future progress has to be raised. If you are able to donate, please use the donate link or if you would rather give a cheque, please go to the contact tab for details. If you are able to donate a prize, venue or some entertainment to be used for fundraising, please get in touch via the contact tab. We will be extremely grateful for any help!

Thomas’s mum Jo Harries has been working tirelessly to raise funds for the operation later in the year. At the time of going to print the fund total was very close to £20,000 which is amazing! It says much about a mum’s love for her son and also for the way local people in Cardiff have shown their support and care by giving money and helping to raise funds through a variety of ways, from charity fun runs, raffles and a whole host of events, details of which are constantly updated on Thomas’ website. The money will not only pay for the operation in America but cover cost s for th e in t en si ve physiotherapy required after the operation, when Thomas will need to work muscles that are currently too small and have not been used before. Our aim here at the magazine is to help Jo continue to raise funds and to appeal to any of our readers to support her either through donations or to help raise money through future events. If you can help, why not use the contact details on the poster on the opposite page and show your support by putting the poster in your car.

February Flavours

Wednesday, 21 March 2012 09:28 Magenta Yellow Black Cyan

SWIG The daily temperatures were hovering around zero so it called for some warming, bigflavoured Winter reds for the February tasting. There were wines from several different countries, both old world and new world wine and several different grape varieties were represented so I wrapped them in blind tasting bottle covers numbered 1 to 8. This was to test the members’ ability to identify the source and grape variety just by its aroma and taste. We started with the easy drinking low tannin, plump, soft, plummy Merlot grape from Central Valley, Chile in the form of Long Country Merlot 2011. It was well liked for its luscious black fruit. It was £5.50 from Tesco. The Second up wine was the Storks Landing Pinot Noir / Shiraz 2010. This blend is from Portugal and in a modern berry fruit style, once again £5.50 from Tesco. Our third wine was a Louis Jadot Combe aux Jacques 2010 Beaujolais-Villages, this Burgundy from the Gamay grape was well reviewed by the press, even winning a Gold medal at the prestigious IWC awards. It had bright cherry and raspberry flavours with green notes and firm tannins but failed to win over members because it needed to be partnered with highly flavoured food. It was £9.50 from Waitrose. Fourth offering was La Casita Reserva Shiraz 2010 from Coquimbo which is the most northern Chilean wine growing area, known for its mineral rich soils warm days and cool evenings. The resultant wines are rich and spicy with good dark fruit flavours. It was £5.50 from Tesco.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. This was produced at the McManis Family Vineyards in Central Valley California. Members appreciated this wine voting it third best of the night, tasting of rich black fruit with some spice and a hint of cloves. It was £5.50 from Tesco. Sixth was the Gran Artizan Reserva Monastrell Syrah 2005 from Alicante in Spain. The Monastrell grape is the second most planted grape in Spain but is more commonly known Mourvedre in the rest of the world. Ageing gave it time to mature into a smooth full-bodied wine with ripe forest fruit. It was £5.50 from Tesco. Our penultimate wine was Zweigelt Classic 2009 from Austria, understandably nobody guessed this obscure relatively modern hybrid grape variety, but one member, impressively, got the country. Members were delighted by the deep vibrant flavours highlighting plump cherry, with a hint of spice and voted it joint first. This is available from The Wine Society at £9.50. The eighth and final wine tasted was the Villa Caffagio Chianti Classico 2007 from Tuscany, Italy. This is crafted from the Sangiovese grape, the most widely planted in Italy and so varies in quality, but Tuscany is the area where producers work to achieve its noblest expression. Wine critic Anthony Rose wrote in the Independent on 18/12/2010 “A sleek, smart Tuscan red whose black cherry fruit etched by Chianti’s typical sweet-and-sour cherry-plum acidity is framed by gentle rounded oak and a mouthwatering balance.” It was voted joint first and is available from Tesco at £11.67.

Fifth wine to be tasted was the Jacktone Ranch

A Day in the Life of Sixteen-year-old singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Rebecca James is fast becoming one of Wales’ rising young stars.

not just one genre. For a while I did write mainly ballads, that’s not what I wanted to be known as so now I also write quite up tempo pop songs. I do mostly covers but I put my own songs in there as well. It’s funny because when I get feedback from people after a gig, they prefer my songs.

The talented musician has made the shortlist for the

Where do you get your inspiration from for your songs? Most of them are inspired from what’s going in my life, or if my life is a bit boring and I’ve heard about something interesting I will write about that. How long does it take to do a whole song? It depends on what kind of song it is. I wrote my first ballad, Turn to Dust, in about 2 hours. But with pop songs sometimes I have to think a lot more about the background music.

BRIT Awards-organised Next Brit Thing Regional Final, which will be held in Cardiff on February 13, she has also won a competition to support Joan Armatrading at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, in October. After reaching the finals of Open Mic 2010 Miss James was introduced to the record label BGM (Baby Girl Music) on their Artist Development Programme. She will be making her first music video next month and BGM are looking to work with the singer over the next few months to get songs together for her debut EP to be released this year.

Who are your musical influences? It’s got to be Elton John, Alicia Keys, because they are kind of similar to what I do; piano, song writing and singing and Lady GaGa for her individuality. What do you like the most and least in your profession?

As part of the development programme she travels to London on a regular basis to receive vocal training and to record her original songs with Laurence Hobbs, a songwriter who has worked with Pixie Lott. At what age did you realise you had a passion for music? When I was about 6 years old, I was performing in Musical Theatre, I then started to learn the piano at the age of 7. However it wasn’t until I was 12 and I started singing lessons that I put the piano and the singing together and about this time I started listening to Beyonce, Lady Ga Ga and other divas, that I realised I wanted to do it as a career. How would you describe your music to people? Easy listening, I’m quite versatile with my songs. It’s

... A Welsh Young Star Has anything embarrassing ever happened to you whilst performing? I was in a competition once and the person before me had loosened the mic stand, so when I started to sing the microphone started to slip down and I had to keep bending over to reach it, eventually it ended up resting on my hands while I tried to sing into it and play the piano. Can you describe some of your most important accomplishments? Getting through to the regional final of ‘Open Mic’ in London, where I was recognised by a record label in London and I am still with them on their Artist Development Programme. I have been chosen as a support act to Joan Armatrading in Cardiff later this year. What do you do with any spare time you do have? I have very limited spare time! Occasionally if I am not gigging on the weekend I will meet up with friends to go to gigs or the cinema or just have a girlie night in over a friends.

I like performing and love getting feedback. I get a real buzz from performing!! Least I suppose the build up, the 5 minutes before going on stage and the fear of forgetting the words. What motivates you to work on your music daily? I have a real passion for it so I don’t really need to be motivated. I realise that to make itIn the music business is hard so I realise that it will take a lot of hard work. Is it possible to describe a typical week in the life of Rebecca James? Very busy. I’ll be in college practicing, song writing in the day and then I will go home and spend more time on the piano writing. I gig on the weekends and I also have a part time job. I also fit in promoting myself on radio stations, talking to media, updating my social networking and music sites. I also go to the recording studios here in Cardiff and in London.

Do you have a personal goal or ambitions set for 2012? Just to get my music more well known, get my first EP out and to write lots of songs. I hope to get two music videos out this year too.

Chocolate - is it all bad? by Dr Sue Kenneally

There are so many food-based traditions associated with the changing seasons in the UK. It goes without saying that the original and best is the Christmas turkey, and most of us associate the great British summer with sausages and burgers sizzling on a barbeque – or in most cases, grill in the kitchen because of the rain – while autumn leads us to think of hearty soups and bonfire night fare, to mention just a few. Spring, however, is for most of us the time of all things chocolate, which can be a cruel temptation for those still locked in a failing battle with the aftermath of the Christmas excesses in the hope of conforming to our society’s perception of beauty in time for the long, bikini-clad days of summer which by now are see mingl y fast approaching. For others this is simply the guilt free excuse they have been longing for in order to satisfy their sweet tooth with wild abandon. Mothers’ Day is the next national chocolate fest in our calendar, following on closely from Valentine’s Day in February, but Easter Sunday provides the ultimate opportunity for legitimate full blown chocoholism, and in a great cause to boot. Eggs have been associated with new beginnings since ancient civilisations used to exchange them during festivals celebrating the arrival of Spring, and Christians thoughtfully adopted this tradition to remember the resurrection of Jesus soon after the event. However, it was Cadburys who changed this concept forever with the production of their first chocolate Easter Egg in 1875 and the rest, as they say, is history. So is all that chocolate really so bad? I have

heard a great number of people (mainly chocolate addicts) argue that chocolate is ‘good for you’, and the evidence suggests that it may well be in the same sense that red wine is ‘good for you’ – it undoubtedly contains some excellent nutrients alongside some ingredients of more questionable benefit, and although those nutrients are available in other foods without the bad stuff, the fact remains that chocolate can indeed be good for you. Sometimes! Recent research has confirmed that certain types of chocolate can have a measurable beneficial effect on health, mainly in terms of lowering blood pressure. Unfortunately the research revealed that only dark chocolate containing at least 70% cocoa solids produces this result with white and milk chocolate having no impact. The people involved in the study ate 100 grams of dark chocolate daily and their blood pressure decreased by an average of 5 points over a few weeks, while in another study not looking at blood pressure it was noted that people eating dark chocolate had much higher levels of antioxidants in their blood after eating it. So that’s all good, surely? Well not really. 100 grams of chocolate is a fair amount to get through on a daily basis and even the good quality dark variety contains a number of calories that would be prohibitive to most of us attempting to maintain even a basic control of our waistlines. So in order to take advantage of this limited health benefit some other food would need to be removed from the diet in order to prevent substantial weight gain and an associated increase in blood pressure, which would defeat the whole aim of the exercise. Still,

HEALTH

all of that is possible, and for individuals with only slightly raised blood pressure and an ability to count calories chocolate in this form may be a solution (there are better ones!). But the reality is that most of us prefer milk or white chocolate, both of which have no discernable health benefits in terms of blood pressure so unless you are willing to make the change to the dark, and dare I say it, expensive variety, there is little to be gained. There is some good news though. All chocolate is thought to increase serotonin levels in the brain, which is one of the reasons that it cheers us up so much. And after all, it tastes so good to most of us that even the most marginal of benefits would indicate that it is worthy of consumption even if it means eating less of

something else. So what does all of this mean in the real world? I would suggest that Easter Sunday is just one day a year and so throwing caution to the wind on that occasion can be a great idea as long as you are otherwise in good health and eat a generally balanced diet the rest of the time. As for every other day, if you are planning to eat chocolate, why not choose the healthier option once in a while? You may or may not have lower blood pressure and a better mood as a result but you will certainly feel less guilty and possibly even a little smug! Wishing you a happy, chocolate filled Easter. .

Shingles – Introduction of new vaccine Shingles is a condition caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. Once you have had chicken pox, the virus stays in the body until it is reactivated, causing shingles. Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the area of skin supplied by the nerve. About 1 in 5 people has shingles at some time in their life. It can occur at any age, but it is most common in people over the age of 50. It is uncommon to have shingles more than once, but about 1 in 50 people has shingles two or more times in their life. Unfortunately the bod y’s immune system weakens with age and so the chance of developing shingles also increases as people get older and as a result individuals over 50 years of age more frequently suffer from the condition.

What are the symptoms? The virus usually affects one nerve only, on one side of the body. Symptoms occur in the area of skin that the nerve supplies. The usual symptoms are pain and a rash. Occasionally, two or three nerves next to each other are affected. The most commonly involved nerves are those supplying the skin on the chest or abdomen. The upper face (including an eye) is also a common site. Shingles usually starts with a headache, fever and tiredness and general feeling of being unwell. It is also very common to feel a burning pain on

the body which may become excruciating. Within days or indeed up to 3 weeks the area of pain will turn into a rash which then changes into fluid filled blisters. When these burst they turn into sores which eventually heal. Most people recover however continue to feel extreme pain in the area of the rash that can remain for months or even years.

Introduction of NEW vaccination for Shingles A Shingles vaccination is now a va il a ble vi a private health clinics and it is recommended that anyone over 50 years of age should consider taking the treatment in order to protect themselves from the condition which can be both extremely painful and has the possibility of causing health problems over a sustained period of time. Indeed The Department of Health’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has recommended that a universal herpes zoster vaccination programme for adults aged 70 up to and including 79 years should be introduced provided that a licensed vaccine is available at a cost effective price. The new Shingles vaccination is now available from CCR Private General Practice. For more information visit www.privategpcardiff.co.uk

The 8 Week Challenge Our regular photographer and columnist Kris Agland has taken the plunge to put his body on the line (quite literally as you’ll find out) to see if former boxer Gary Lockett really can do what he claims, in developing an 8 week programme to lose weight, develop muscle definition and change lifestyle. We’ll be following Kris’ progress and he’s even set up a blog so you can follow his daily routines and find out whether you could benefit from the 8 Week Challenge. [Over to Kris!] First things first. All of our readers would like to know more about Gary Lockett, ex professional Boxer, property developer, proud father and husband, trainer and manager to professional boxers and a life-long Liverpool Fan. During your career what was your highlights? I was a good fighter; I was a heavy-handed puncher, which means I had the ability to stop a fight with one punch. I feel that I under achieved in the Sport through injury and Boxing Politics. My highlight was probably wins over Top class fighters such as Kevin Kelley and Ryan Rhodes and also fighting for the World Middleweight Title in the world famous Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey

I have been on both sides of this experience by training myself and putting my fighters through their pace. I felt the 8-week cycle could then have been adapted to suit a person of any fitness level in order to see significant results. It most certainly could be. With the right approach to fitness and lifestyle I believe that in 8 weeks anyone has the ability to see change.

My fitness levels are I suppose very average, I was always under the impression that you had to be super fit to Box?

It is commonly regarded that Boxers are the fittest of all athletes, however you’re level of fitness makes no difference, I cater for all levels of fitness. Don’t forget your training for a fight but training to improve body mind and soul So during my upcoming 8 weeks, what am I letting myself in for? It is not going to be easy. It is 95 % down to you to make the difference. Anyone that thinks it will be easy is in for a serious shock. It takes a huge amount of

So I guess I am in good hands! I am very excited to have the opportunity to be trained by so m e o n e o f su c h h i g h credentials and experiences. I do feel however that getting me in shape could be the toughest test yet of your career! Definitely not! In 8 weeks time you will be a new man! So all in 8 weeks? Where did this idea come from? 8 weeks before a fight is when the training a diet gets strict with professional Boxers.

discipline and commitment to complete a strict 8-week programme. However after 8 weeks not only will you see a significant body shape difference but your lifestyle and well being will be greatly improved. I like food (as you can tell from the photo) does the next 8 weeks mean me going hungry? Certainly not! A good nutrition plan does not mean living on lettuce leaves and cabbage soup. My nutrition plans are high in protein, high in good fats, and low in saturated and hydrogenated fats. With the necessary blends of nutrients and vitamins needed to improve/maintain health. That leads me to my next point. You often hear of people getting in shape and very quickly going back to there overweight state. Why is this? I think lifestyle management is something people needed to be educated on. My 8 week plan is aimed at educating the mind and body and therefore on completion of your 8 weeks you will have the knowledge to maintain healthy eating and you should be fit enough to want to carry on with your training which goes hand in hand with a healthy lifestyle. Are you saying that for the next 8 weeks I can kiss goodbye to a curry or a cheeky Chinese? Good gracious no!!! You are allowed a cheat night. A few beers or a meal of your choice is the reward for all your hard work. Plus one cheat meal per week actually fools the body to releasing more fat.

The key points to this programme? Training programme consisting of 2 sessions a week with me, rewrite a programme for them to do in there own time. A full nutrition plan consisting of nutritional products and dietary advice

Follow Kris at— krisaglandchallenge.blogspot.com 8 weeks when you are sticking to a nutrition plan seems like a long time but to look at in the long term that it’s for your lifetime. Life style change is the goal. 8 weeks continue to train and eat in a similar pattern your well being, health and lifestyle will retain all of the above. No one likes food and wine as much as me but the reason I retain my shape is because I train intensely and I know when its time to cut out the food a wine. 8 weeks to educate your lifestyle.

Pierced Youths, Grated I was in a branch of Tesco the other day when the man in front of me at the till had a complaint. It wasn’t that the goods weren’t good enough or even that they were too expensive; it was that he wasn’t from round these parts. As he stood there looking around for support in a posh tweed jacket, muttering his complaints in such a stereotypically, rural upper class English accent, I wondered if Inspector Morse or his sidekick would get out of their classic car and examine the nearby murder scene. But the crime, as it appeared in his eyes, wasn’t murder, it was something equally sinister. It was that the poor girl on the till was attempting to charge him 5p for a plastic carrier bag to carry his Chardonnay and smoked salmon back to his chauffeur driven Rolls Royce (I made some of the last bits up). Ridiculous,” he shouted, “Are you telling me that with its billions of pounds of profits Tesco has to charge me for a paper bag.” “It’s not Tesco it’s a Welsh thing.” The now blushing cashier replied, wisely choosing not to indicate the error of bag material the complainant was making. The phrase ‘Welsh thing’ was a bit too much for him and he yelled still louder, in true Victor Meldrew fashion, that he didn’t believe it. For once I managed to bite my tongue and not join in the argument, as the upper class bag protester slammed a 5p coin on the counter, reducing his intended number of bags from two to one, filled it and stormed off. Strangely as he hurriedly packed his bag, with a series of huffing exaggerated movements, I no-

ticed that amongst the wine, he had also purchased three bags of ready grated cheddar. On my subsequent quick google a block of medium cheddar is £5.00 a kilogramme whereas ready grated cheddar cheese is £8.95 for the same amount. A small bag of the stuff is just under £2, so if he bought three of them then instead of paying £3.30 ish for his cheese he spent the best part of £6. So £2.70 to avoid the inconvenience of grating his cheddar. I know it’s a value judgement, but it seems somewhat strange to worry about a 5p plastic bag when one is throwing away money like that. Doesn't it? I had a fellow spectator to this event; a grinning youth, in his late teens, stood behind me in an overused green Parker with a jolly face full of piercings, framed by expensive looking headphones. “It’s because of his generation that we haven’t got a planet left,” he scoffed. I inwardly agreed as I made my purchase and exchanged some trivia with the cashier. As I walked back to the car the phrase “his generation” played on my mind. What did he mean “his generation”? In fact thinking about it, I am the same generation as the upper class twit who wasn’t aware of recent changes to single use bag legislation on this side of the River Severn. Am I and my contemporaries to blame for the need to discourage the use of plastic bags? Or for that matter are we responsible for global warming and the depletion of the ozone layer? Perhaps we

Cheese and Plastic Bags are, I thought, as I watched the Parker-clad youth jingle his facial piercings carrying his shopping across the car park in single use plastic bags to a big Volvo in which someone of my generation (his mother?) sat waiting. Hmmm I thought, perhaps he’s just as culpable as me. It is true that as a child I didn’t think much about environmental issues. When I used to walk (not drive) the couple of miles to school they didn’t tell us about global warming. And when we got home we played outside, with not a gameboy, wii or mobile phone in sight. The only gadgets we needed were a round or oval ball and a few coats to form our game. When we went anywhere, we generally got the bus or more usually, walked and only in extreme cases did we talk one of our father’s into coming to pick us up. When it rained we sat at home and watched one of the three channels available on the television until we got bored, switched it off and did something else. I'm not quite so sure we are more to blame for global warming than the kids of today with their countless gadgets, computer games, internet enabled smart phones, the requirement to be driven anywhere and 750 channels on their wide-screen televisions. It’s another grumpy man’s rant I guess, but I do think that the Parker- clad youth’s point is flawed. The truth is that the dire environmental predicament we find ourselves in is a fault of all generations. I might go on about how life was so much simpler in the 1970s and claim my carbon footprint to be much lower than that of my children, but my parents’ generation could claim an even simpler existence. In their day they had toys which seemed to be concentrated on whipping tops and making go-carts, without televisions or anything resembling the igadgets of today. And no doubt in their day my grandparents’ generation suggested life was getting far too fast, wasteful and complex.

proved is the Welsh Government’s policy on plastic bags does work. Because in my observation of his outburst, although he was unhappy the grated cheese buyer did cut down his bag usage from two to one - a reduction of 50%. One can see in the hedges and trees alongside our roads that the number of stray carrier bags has reduced considerably. Logically it doesn’t really make sense, as even on minimum wage, 5p is 30 seconds work but it has made us think, and those that go to Tesco, Sainsbury’s or Asda with reusable bags are now in the majority. I have a problem with those reusable bags. I don’t disagree with the policy, in fact I am generally in support of it, but they should come with a memory enhancement pill. I have arrived at the till so many times, having forgotten to take a bag with me and bought another bag-for-life or two that I now have a house that is full of the things. I imagine my individual carbon footprint has, initially at least, got a little larger, but I think the philosophy ‘go shopping - take bags’ is sinking in and I should start making the environmental gains on behalf of the planet and land fill sites pretty soon. It does seem a bit odd that one can buy food with layer upon layer of packaging and be discouraged from taking it home in what is quite often a thinner layer. It also seems odd that high class clothing retailers have to charge 5p for the previously complimentary suit carrier that would have a retail value of hundreds of times that. But remembering to take a bag with us to the supermarket and corner shop seems a fairly sensible idea and one that all of us from whatever generation or social class can support and join in with, to make the world just that ever so tiny bit better. Regards, Tony Tonymillin@me.com

However, one thing the upper class complainant
