Welcome October was a long old month for me. Still mission accomplished with the half marathon, although I will say it was not as flat a run as the organisers had promised. Certainly everyone I’d spoken to who ran that day commented on the hill at mile ten! Many thanks for all your support!

By the time you read this, the fireworks will be quiet and whilst there may still be the cloying smell of cordite in the air, we are definitely on the countdown to Christmas now. As usual, I shall follow the time-honoured tradition of waiting for the windiest day of the year before mounting the step-ladder and battling the elements to secure the Christmas lights. But it is a job with a great deal of satisfaction because nothing beats seeing the look of joy on the little face and the big wide, smiling eyes (and that’s just the wife!) to know that the festive season is nearly upon us. So be merry and full of cheer, for the best time of year is very near.

2011 Cardiff Half Marathon By Alaina Morgans Photography by Ian Fido
October 2011 saw the 9th annual Lloyds TSB Cardiff Half Marathon. The race sold out in record time this year, with all places filled in early August. Organised by Barnardo’s, the Half Marathon is Wales’s largest multi-charity event, with almost 800 charities and good causes benefiting from the run. 15,000 elite and amateur runners from all over the globe; including Australia, Brazil, Canada and the USA braved the 13.1-mile course, the youngest runner being just 17 and the eldest 78.
wish every runner the best of luck. I hope those seeking a personal best achieved the time they were aiming for”. Kenyan Edwin Kiptoo, who won the Bristol 10K event this year, completed the course in astonishing one hour, three minutes and 27 seconds, closely followed by Andrew Lesuuda who finished in one, hour, three minutes and 54 seconds. The first female to cross the line was Alice Mogire, finishing in one hour, eleven minutes and 26 seconds.
Many celebrities showed up to take part and raise money for charity including: singer, actress and presenter Connie Fisher, TV sports presenter Charlie Webster, current manager of the Welsh football team Gary Speed, former Miss Wales Courtney Hamilton and MTV’s Mathew Pritchard, who completed his fifth Cardiff Half Marathon in a row in hope to raise £500 for his chosen charity.
The scenic route of the run took the sea of runners through Cardiff Bay, Grangetown, Riverside and Penarth. Speaking to participants after the race described the experience as; “Extremely tuff and the hills were tremendously hard” “There was a lovely atmosphere and the course was fab. It's always a boost when you see someone you know in the crowd cheering you on!”
Former Olympic athlete and Barnardoes Cymru Ambassador Jamie Baulch, started the race alongside The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr. Delme Bowen. Baulch said: “I was pleased to be there to

The Capsule Collection By Chantele Cross-Jones Mary Portas, my true goddess of style (except the harem pants she wore, but that’s another story!) said that every wardrobe needs a collection of 7 easy pieces that are the foundation of great dressing. Her essentials were: The No-Brainer Dress, The Pencil Skirt, The Wide Leg Trousers, The Slim Leg Trousers, The Slouch Jumper, The White Shirt and The Tux Jacket. Her collection isn’s about following a trend, it’s the key pieces that you will build on every season.
belt and thick tights (or patterned one if your feeling brave). The Smart Trousers Matalan £16 - I think grey trousers are effortlessly chic. And this high waist, wide leg pair are perfect for g i vi n g a m or e streamline figure. The P u s s y- b o w Blouse - Next £22 Mary may have said a white shirt is key, and although I agree, I think a good blouse can add great colour to your wardrobe. This teal is bang on trend for this season, but it has been hanging around for a few seasons now and I think it w i l l stay for a while longer. The fitted cuffs add a sleek element, with the pussy-bow keeping it feminine. Leave it l o o s e ! Don ’t tuck or belt it as you will lose the flowing shape. The Aline Skirt Matalan £18 - Again Mary says we should all have a pencil skirt, but to me they can be a little harsh on some people and it’s very easy to get it wrong and end up looking too tight and lumpy. The A-line on the other hand will
So this month I had a question from a lady going on a mini city break and she wants to pack light but classy and sexy so I am going to put together my own version of Mary’s 7 Easy Pieces (but I’m include a pair of shoes! Their essential in my mind!), a capsule collection for this season. And all on a budget of £200! My No-Brainer Dress - M&S £35 - I think this simple black skater dress will look cute and sexy on everybody, and it is timeless so will be at the front of your wardrobe for a long time. The 3/4 sleeves mean it’s great for the cold weather and the almost 1950’s ‘fit and flare’ style means it is slimming on most figures. Team with a coloured or metallic skinny 10

of sins! This beautiful floral patterned one is elegant yet with just the right amount of eyecatching fun. Always look for an A-line that hits above the knee, unless you want to try the midi length but this trend doesn’t work for everyone. Forever and for Always Shoes - Sainsbury’s £18 - Who would have thought these little babies were from Sainsbury’s! I call these my ‘Forever and for Always’ shoes because now that brogues are back I think they will never go out of style. So classic and elegant and literally will go with anything. Personally I always go for a small heel as I think it stops them looking too manly
A Simple Cardigan TKMaxx £16 Ms Portas would probably have a heart attack if sh e sa w a cardigan in her stor e, but personally I think they are the epitome of feminine style. They work for all age ranges as long as you look for one that fits right and is in a style or pattern that isn’t too old. This simple grey one is elegant and can be thrown over anything to add a touch of class.

Those In Peril War is very often described as a “young man’s game”. For most soldiers on the frontlines, even today, this is very much the case, but during the two World Wars men of all ages found themselves swept into the maelstrom of conflict. Many perished in the course of duties which, in ordinary times, would contain no extra risks, but in times of war were perilous.
The unusually named Windsor Spinks was the Chief Officer of the SS Stokesley when war broke out and served aboard his ship bringing supplies of chemicals over from the continent. The Stokesley was an old steamer built in Holland in 1922 and by April 1940 was under the ownership of a Cardiff-based firm. On the 24th April 1940 the Stokesley was entering the Thames estuary under the direction of a pilot when she struck a sea mine – whether it was a “friendly” or “enemy” mine is not recorded. She sank rapidly, taking down fourteen of the eighteen -man crew with her. Among that number was Chief Officer Spinks, a man killed in the course of a normal day’s work.
The two oldest casualties from Llanishen lie at peace in St Isan’s churchyard. Both of them were merchant mariners, the innocents caught up in the vicious Battle of the Atlantic of 1940-43, when Nazi Germany attempted to starve Britain into submission by attacking her merchant lifeline.

A little over a year later, James Henry Blathwayt Eynon, a resident of Fidlas Road in Llanishen, was preparing to put his ship and crew to sea once more. He was the Master of the MV Benn Hann, a tanker built in 1940 and which had recently put in at Fort William. On the 10th November 1941 the ship departed Fort William and was never seen or heard from again. Seven days after she sailed a life raft with bodies – including that of Master Eynon, washed ashore near Port Ellen. The cause of her loss remains a mystery to this day, though there is speculation that it was either due to another mine or a U-Boat attack. And the ages of these two casualties of the war at sea? Chief Officer Spinks was fortyseven, Master Eynon was forty-five. The Second World War was far from the preserve of the young.

Movember By Tony Millin
It seems I hit a bit of a nerve last month, with the subject of children in restaurants provoked quite an email response. Thanks to all of you that took the effort to email me your views on the subject. I am grateful for all of these, and even those of you who email to tell me I’m talking complete rubbish is appreciated. And it seems that on the subject tackled last month my view is very much in the minority.
I agree with many of these suggestions but it shows that there is a feeling out there that things have got out of hand. My favourite anecdote was of a reader from Rhiwbina who witnessed two under-10s sword fencing with steak knives on, under and between her adjacent tables. Apparently when she asked the waiter to have a word, he said he had tried and was awaiting reinforcements. Considering the complaint was to parents, to whom armed combat is seen as an educational activity, any back-up would have to be substantial indeed. Unable to cope with the stress the unfortunate reader left before placing her order.
Firstly, two of my email correspondents said that I was a grumpy old so and so, who should be prepared to put up with a bit of noise at a restaurant, cafe or pub from time to time. Actually I’m more than happy to put up with this sort of thing. It’s the running round like bargain hunters in a January sale, confusing eating establishments with army assault courses, while their parents sit in oblivion that I was having a moan about.
It does seem there is a problem, and I am resolved that in future if I see such behaviour, I am going to have a quiet polite word with the proprietors or the perpetrators - I am not sure which will be best. I guess I’ll have to judge it on a case-by-case basis. Who’s going to join me? If you do let me know how it goes.
Secondly, it turns out, that those that told me I should be more tolerant were themselves very much in the minority and were only a single figure percentage of the emails I received. According to them my point of view is in fact far too tolerant. The contrary view appears to be that anyone under 30 shouldn’t be allowed to dine with the rest of us. It is their loud banter, loud ring tones, loud games of touch rugby and general ignorance being the source of such complaints. Solutions suggested include that under-18s should be banished to the beer garden with the smokers, to compulsory sterilisation of people who don’t understand the desire of others for a quiet meal or drink in a relaxed environment. I’m not sure
One thing I am sure about however, is that 1 in 9 of us men will develop prostate cancer. In the UK that equates to about 37,000 cases each year and the incidence is increasing. Consequently many of us, even if we haven’t been affected by the disease directly will know someone who has. This month, as you may already know is Movember. It’s the month when many of us men do something we have wanted to do since our youth - grow as camp and as bushy

a moustache as we can. I did it last year and despite the fact that much to my surprise I could grow one quite easily I hated it. My top lip seemed excessively dry and despite telling myself to stop, I couldn’t help fiddling with it. But despite the lack of comfort, being part of a group of fellow Mo -growers was actually very enjoyable despite my certainty that we looked ridiculous as my fellow novice ta che w ea rers amongst sat in the pub picking bits of food out of virgin hair growth.
hopefully raise a bit more cash than last year. This month of discomfort as I grow my few millimetres of facial hair is nothing however compared to the world record of a 12 foot Mo grown by an Indian gentlemen between 1982 and 2004. I don’t think I will go that far but I will resist the temptation to wear a false one. Amazingly I discovered while wiki-browsing that both Groucho Marx’s and Charlie Chaplin’s taches, fundamental to their on screen images were both false. That can’t be true can it? Well according to Wikipedia it is, so it must be the case. But if I can put up with a month of discomfort and raise a few pounds for a worthy cause then I’ll be pleased to do it, however foolish I look.
There were 112,000 UK Mo Bros and Sistas (apparently women wear false ones - usually) last year. Together we raised nearly £12 million for research and education into the disease.
And may I encourage you to contribute, when you come across someone putting their top lip through itchy discomfort for this w o r t h y cause. If you don’t m e e t anyone you can of c o u r s e donate to me, which can be done through my Mo Space site at http://mobro.co/tonymillin. Any donations will be very much appreciated.
This year I am doing it again, and as I write the first shoots of Movember growth are irritating my face. Last year I was accused of looking like an overweight porn star so this time I am going for a new look and sculpting the ‘trucker’ on my middle aged chin. This is the one that progresses horizontally along the top lip before stretching vertically down on either side of the mouth. I’m sure it will come out grey, annoy the socks off me and I’ll look like a cross between a member of Motorhead and a chartered accountant, but I am going to persevere until the end of the month and
Next month back to ranting. Tony

It is essential to have a robust backup routine, including provision for off-site storage of your data, as part of your IT security policy. You should have regular checks in place to ensure that this is being carried out as prescribed, and that your recovery plan is viable and fully tested. If you think you have your system covered because you have it all on disk or tape then think again.

Worried about changes in the appearance of your skin? The British Association of Dermatologists recommends that you tell your doctor or contact a dermatologist about any changes to a mole or the appearance of any part of your skin, including any persistent flaking, scab formation, ulceration and itching.
Sun damaged keratoses)
skin
PDT involves the use of a light-sensitive cream (a photosensitiser). This photosensitiser is, by itself, harmless. When light of a certain wavelength is shone onto skin to which the photosensitiser has been applied, the photosensitiser is activated. This causes changes within the sun-damaged skin cells. Only the area of skin where the cream and light source is combined will be treated.
(actinic
What other skin conditions can be t reated with p hotodyn amic therapy?
Actinic keratoses are areas of sun-damaged skin found predominantly on sun-exposed parts of the body. Typical sites affected include the backs of the hands, forearms, face and ears, the scalp in balding men and the lower legs in women. They are usually harmless but there is a very small risk of some actinic keratoses developing into a form of skin cancer.
PDT can be used to treat various skin conditions including: Thin basal cell carcinomas at “low risk” sites Bowen’s Disease – a pre cancerous lesion appearing as slowly enlarging reddish / pink areas. If you are concerned with changes to the appearance of your skin contact your GP or the private Clearskin Dermatology Treatment Clinic for an i mme dia te appoint me nt. www.clearskin.uk.com
What causes actinic keratoses? They are caused by excessive sun exposure over many years (from sunbathing, sunbed use, outdoor work or recreational activities) and are therefore more common in older people. Fair-skinned, blueeyed, red- or blonde-haired individuals, who burn easily in the sun but tan poorly, are at particular risk.
What is photodynamic therapy? Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a novel and effective technique for treating sun-damaged skin. In PDT irradiation of the skin with high intensity red light activates a cream which has been applied to the affected area. This treatment destroys any abnormal cells in the skin before they turn cancerous.

The fact that I was thrown into the Lions Den in the Liverpool Arena (Bellews home town) against a dangerous undefeated fighter, I made sure I won the fight! There is already rumours that Tony Bellew wants a re match with you. Is this in your immediate plans? No I am moving on to the biggest names on the World Stage, I was five years younger than Tony, I fought him in his own town and still walked away with the win. Did To ny Bellew surprise with you with his fitness and Ability? No. I know Tony trains religiously hard, h e p u t s everything on the line and has a big heart. He is a very hungry fighter and did everything he could to try and take the belt away from me. Prior to the fight there was a lot of bad blood between yourselves, was that more for the cameras or was there an air of hostility between you both? We genuinely had a big rivalry between us, we were both undefeated, both competitive and both believed strongly in our own ability. He talks a lot which wound me up and I bit, which is very uncharacteristic of me, but it certainly captured the public and medias attention which is great for a big fight.

Now that the fight is over is there still animosity between you both? None from me I have moved on. Tony was gracious in his post fight interview but I am unsure how is feelings lie now. We both have a huge amount of respect for each other and I have no problems with him. So what are the future plans for you? I may have a mandatory challenger in February, possibly a Russian Fighter but ideally I would like one of the three American World Champions (Tavoris Cloud IBF, Bernard Hopkins WBC, Beibut Shumenov WBA). If any of the three were to accept a fight with you would you be looking for a home coming fight or are you happy to travel across the Atlantic to face them? A home coming fight in Cardiff would be great in the likes of the Cardiff City Stadium or if we had a name such as Bernard Hopkins the Millennium Stadium would be awesome. Hopkins was re-awarded his WBC title after a ‘Non Contest’ with Chad Dawson, he is 46 years old already, do you feel that he has the desire to carry on fighting for much longer? Bernard Hopkins is a Boxing legend, a real class act, a fight with him would be a dream for me, but one I believe I can win. To Box at this level at 46 years old defies the odds. Aside from Boxing you were a graduate of Cardiff University, how did you manage to fit in your studying with your Boxing Career. It was tough, very demanding. I had the mental stress of the Mathematics work and then the Physical stress of the Boxing and making sure I was fighting fit. My diet wasn’t great as I was living in Student Halls where I was also living the ‘student social life’ so I truly was burning the candle at both ends. But it was a great experience and I am so glad I dug deep and achieved both of my goals to graduate from Cardiff University with a Mathematics degree and gone on to win the World Title in Boxing.
Thanks Nathan and keep up the good work. We will keep an excited eye open for the future fights of Nathan Cleverly and hopefully will see him packing out the Millennium Stadium for a showdown with Bernard Hopkins. Interview by Kris Agland

SWIG Made from the Garnacha grape - - a dark dense colour made from old vines well balanced with ripe berry fruits, spice and sweet oak with a long rich finish. £7.25 a bottle.
The wines for this tasting were supplied by Houghtons of Rhiwbina and Carl from Houghtons very kindly came along and gave us a really good interesting talk about Spanish wines and Rioja in particular.
R Finca Manzanos Rioja Crianza – 2007 – 13.5% This family winery was established in 1890 – A rich dark purple colour, sweet on the nose a delicious soft and silky Rioja with delicate tannins hints of red berries and dried fruits, vanilla and coconut – £8.95 a bottle.
Spain is a country with the most land under vine in the world. The principal native grape in Spain is Tempranillo along with Garnacha. There are four descriptions of wine which refer to its age or aging time in oak barrels:- Joven wines red or white are harvested in one year and sold with hardly any time in oak barrels. Crianza Reds must be aged for a minimum of 24 months with at least 6 months in oak barrels and the rest in bottle. Reserva Reds must be aged for a minimum of 36 months with at least 12 months in oak barrels with the rest in bottle. Gran Reserva Reds are only made from the best vintages of grape and must be aged for a minimum of 60 months with at least 18 months in oak barrels and the rest in bottle.

The colour was very brown – An interesting wine but no wow factor. We think you have to have a very experienced palate to appreciate this wine at £17.75 a bottle.
W Luis Canas Barrel Ferment Rioja Blanco – 2009 – 13.5% Bodegas Luis Canon is situated in Villabuena in the heart of Rioja Alavesa – A family run Bodega producing around 1.5 million bottles a year – made from 90% Viura grapes and 10% Malvasia grapes – a light crisp wine golden yellow in colour with pineapple and citrus, honey and vanilla £8.75 a bottle.

Menopause by Dr Sue Kenneally enough!) years and suddenly I am faced with three teenagers, hormones that are very much on the downward slide and an age where the ‘niggles’ seem to start creeping in. All the more reason to thoroughly enjoy today in my book!!
One of the themes that runs through my life as a GP is that I never cease to be amazed at the rollercoaster lives that so many people seem to have – I have witnessed rags to riches – and riches to rags – stories that would sit very comfortably in any women’s weekly magazine, and been personally involved in stories that would be dismissed out of hand by the director of any soap opera on the basis that they were so far-fetched as to be utterly ridiculous. And yet they happen, day in, day out, year in, year out while I sit at the same desk giving the best care I know how to, often able to do little more than observe as the drama unfolds.
While it is true that some women sail through the menopause with very few issues, most find that it interferes with their daily lives on some level, ranging from minor irritation through to full blown disaster. According to the aptly n a me d we b s i t e 3 4 - me n op a u s e symptoms.com there are – you guessed it – 34 separate symptoms that can be caused by the menopause. The most common ones are hot flushes, night sweats, irregular periods, loss of libido, vaginal dryness and mood swings, and of these hot flushes and mood swings tend to be the ones that bring people to my door most often, along with difficulty in sleeping or concentrating on things which can be equally destructive.
Some things, however, are pretty predictable. The heavy smoker who I have been cajoling for years to quit the evil weed finally goes for that chest x-ray and gets the dreaded diagnosis that they have spent the whole of their life telling themselves would happen to someone else. The very overweight person ultimately has to start treatment for diabetes. And women of a certain age eventually give up fighting on their own and drop in to discuss their ‘hormones’.
The menopause happens when the levels of oestrogen and progesterone (hormones responsible for regulating fertility) become gradually lower, and it is the changes that result in most of the menopausal symptoms. Once the hormone levels have reached their lowest levels and stabilise again the symptoms tend to disappear, and most women who have these symptoms will notice them for a maximum of five years in normal circumstances.
As women we generally know that the menopause is looming in our future, and by the time we give it any serious thought that future is distinctly not-too-distant. I am personally acutely aware that my children are currently young and relatively sweet, my hormones are nicely balanced and I have not an ache or a pain anywhere in my body on a normal day. Fast forward not many (not

effects if taken at high doses for too long, but they may be worth considering.
As most of the symptoms of menopause are related to falling hormone levels, treatment has traditionally been in the form of hormone replacement therapy or HRT – a combination of oestrogen and often progesterone taken in tablet form or applied to the skin in the form of a patch or gel. As with so many other medications, it is very effective but also comes with some significant long term problems in that it has been found to increase the chances of heart disease, stroke and breast cancer, so is generally best avoided unless really necessary.
Many people recommend eating natural plant foods that contain plant oestrogens or ‘phytoestrogens’ as a way of combating menopausal symptoms. While there is some evidence that soy products in particular may help with hot flushes and some other menopausal symptoms, a number of medical studies have found that soy made no difference. Also, the issue about whether or not soy consumption increases breast cancer risk, mainly in women from Western nations, is still being hotly debated by the experts and there is no definite answer yet. Other forms of phytoestrogens may be helpful in the form of various nuts and seeds, and there are plenty of recipes for ‘HRT cake’ on the internet that many women find helpful. Essentially these recipes are all variations on a theme involving large quantities of nuts and seeds that contain significant levels of phytoestrogens, but also significant levels of calories – at a time when most women begin to struggle with their weight more than ever – so it would be important to eat less of other things to avoid weight gain if HRT cake is a possible option for you.
My own viewpoint about HRT – and please listen to your own doctor who knows you rather than me if you are not sure about this! - is that if the menopause is basically manageable for you, then taking medication that benefits you only slightly but that increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer, however minimal that increase may be, is not wise. However, if menopausal symptoms are making life unbearable and taking a pill every day makes everything better then a small increased risk of long term health problems may be a price worth paying as long as you are in generally good health. It is a very personal decision and one that you may need to think long and hard about!
Thankfully, almost all menopausal symptoms are treatable to a point where they are not a problem – the main issue to consider is how much you are prepared to take risks, albeit fairly small ones, with your long term health to improve your quality of life now. If you are not sure which is best for you then your GP or practice nurse would be happy to help, so don’t suffer in silence, it’s good to talk!
There are other prescription medications that have been shown to reduce hot flushes, which is the main thing menopausal women find difficult – these include low doses of some antidepressants and clonidine, which is a rarely used treatment for high blood pressure. If you are reluctant to take hormones then these could be options, while they are less effective htan HRT they may help just enough to make life manageable again. In terms of alternative therapies, the two that have been found to be most effective are black cohosh and vitamin E. Both come with possible side

HPV Vaccines – for Girls and Boys
Human papillomavirus or HPV is a virus you may not know too much about—but you should. HPV will affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV clears on its own. But, for others who don’t clear certain types, HPV could cause significant consequences: cervical, vaginal, and vulval cancers in females. Other types could cause genital warts in both males and females. And there’s no way to predict who will or won’t clear the virus.
GARDASIL is the only HPV vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 90% of genital warts cases. If you wish to ensure that you or your child obtains the very best protection then contact CCR Private General Practice on 029 2076 4611 or visit www.privategpcardiff.co.uk for more information.
Since September 2008 there has been a national programme in the UK to vaccinate girls aged 12 to 13 against the human papilloma virus (HPV). From September 2008 a three-year "catch-up" campaign was started, to offer the HPV vaccine, also known as the cervical cancer jab, to older girls aged 14–17. The programme is delivered largely through secondary schools and consists of three injections that should ideally be given over a period of six months, although they can all be given over a period of 12 months. Cervarix is the HPV vaccine used in the UK programme and provides protection against 2 types of HPV virus. Vaccination with GARDASIL only available privately in the UK is another option very much worth considering.

The Immortals
Arthur Christmas
Starring :Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Luke Evans, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Joseph Morgan, Freida Pinto, with John Hurt and Mickey Rourke Directed by: Tarsem Singh
Arthur Christmas reveals the incredible, never-before seen answer to every child's question: 'So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?' The answer: Santa's exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the center of the film is a story about a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero, Arthur, with an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns.
Witness the 3-D epic battle as mere men become Immortals. Eons after the gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has d ecla r ed wa r against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares.
In Time Welcome to a world where time has become the ultimate currency. You stop ageing at 25, but there’s a catch: you’re genetically-engineered to live only one more year, unless you can buy your way out of it. The rich “earn” decades at a time (remaining at age 25), bec omin g e ssentia lly immortal, while the rest beg, borrow or steal enough hours to make it through the day. When a man from the wrong side of the tracks is falsely accused of murder, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful hostage. Living minute to minute, the duo’s love becomes a powerful tool in their war against the system.
Only he who possesses this bow can unleash the Titans, who have been imprisoned deep within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and thirst for revenge. In the king’s hands, the bow would rain destruction upon mankind and annihilate the gods. But ancient law dictates the gods must not intervene in man’s conflict. They remain powerless to stop Hyperion…until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) comes forth as their only hope.

Tower Heist
Rum Diary
Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy lead an all-star cast in Tower Heist, a comedy caper about working stiffs who seek revenge on the Wall Street swindler who stiffed them. After the workers at a luxury Central Park condominium discover the penthouse billionaire has stolen their retirement, they plot the ultimate revenge: a heist to reclaim what he took from them.
'The Rum Diary' tells the i n cr ea si n gl y unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins). Adopting the rumsoaked lifestyle of the late '50s.
Qu eens native Josh Kovacs (Stiller) ha s managed one of the most luxurious and well-secured residences in New York City for more than a decad e. Und er hi s watchful eye, nothing goes u ndetected. In th e swankiest unit atop Josh’s building, Wall Street titan Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda) is under house arrest after being caught stealing two billion from his investors. The hardest hit among those he defrauded? The tower staffers whose pensions he was entrusted to manage.
My Week with Marilyn In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of 'The Prince and the Showgirl'. The film that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Aurthur Miller (Dougray Scott). Nearly 40 years on, his diary account The Prince, the Showgirl and Me was published, but one week was missing and this was published some years later as My Week with Marilyn this is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of work
With only days before Arthur gets away with the perfect crime, Josh’s crew turns to petty crook Slide (Murphy) to plan the nearly impossible…to steal what they are sure is hidden in Arthur’s guarded condo. Though amateurs, these rookie thieves know the building better than anyone. Turns out they’ve been casing the place for years, they just didn’t know it.
50/50 Based on an incredible real-life experience, 50/50 is a funny, touching and original story of friendship, love and survival, starring Seth R o g e n , J o s e p h GordonLevitt, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anjelica Huston.

Machine Gun Preacher wonder if you could ever feel any empathy for the man. Yet, instead of revulsion, there is sense of pity, a life gone so bad that there seems no hope of redemption. For all this, Sam Childers found God, somewhat quickly and in some senses apparently altogether too conveniently in the film, to express in more than one scene, probably because this being a Hollywood film, the need to explain why and how a man comes to leave a life of drunkenness and violence is somehow less interesting than using machine guns to stave off hoards of murderous African rebels seeking to wipe out villages of children. Dramatically then, the message and possibly the meaning of finding faith and forgiveness seems somewhat secondary to the ‘plot’, which is a shame because had more attention been given to Sam finding that faith, it would have made his vision and subsequent mission to Africa much more compelling.
Don’t be fooled by the title. This is no action film with gung-ho shoot ‘em up high octane thrills and spills in the spirit of Mr Stallone or Mr Schwarzenegger. Those expecting a plotline full of holes, explosions and gun fights every five minutes along with the pithy zingers of a Die Hard film will be sorely disappointed. This is far more of a cerebral film than the title suggests, albeit that the titular Sam Childers on whom this real-life story is based is played by the somewhat buff all-actioner Gerard Butler, seen previously flexing his muscles in films such as ‘300’ and ‘Gamer’. So you’d be forgiven for thinking this film had a similar vein. Not so by quite some way, although this is a tough, gritty and in some respects touching film about a man’s journey back from the depths of depravity. There may be plot spoilers within this review, so please don’t read on if you plan to see without wanting to know the story in advance.
There is no doubt that the scenes in Africa where Sam sets out to build an orphanage are truly touching, capable of bringing a tear to the eye, especially against the backdrop of the violence of the mid nineties in Southern Sudan. Indeed, the supporting cast who portray the orphans provide a much more engaging view of how children at such tender ages can become embroiled in the world of warlords, with AK47’s slung over their shoulders and a far-away look in their eyes. It really does give that sense of hopeless for these orphans and we do really see their joy when Sam Childers provides hope.
The film begins as Sam is released from prison. It is clear from the outset that he is a hardened, humourless serial offender with no sense of remorse and lacking any form of moral compass. (Hardly a poster-boy for prison as a means of rehabilitation then.) He is therefore disturbed to find that while serving his time, his wife has kicked the heroin addiction, quit her job at the local strip bar and taken to attending church with her new-found faith in God. Butler’s hell-raising Sam is less than impressed and wastes no time in resorting to his previous ways, going on something of a drug-fuelled, alcohol-laden bender which includes some armed robbery and some ‘hide the knife in the tramp’ games along with his equally reprehensible side-kick ably portrayed by Michael Shannon.
The sentiment is heart-warming enough, yet harder still is that Sam is so overwhelmed in his mission to save these children that he forgets about his family back home. Worse still, his successful, albeit fledgling construction business is suffering too. There are moments in the film where you feel angry with Sam for doing what he does, other times when you can be angry for him – the hypocrisy of some supposedly-Christian people causes him deep offence.
However, we quickly see that Sam isn’t at all comfortable with this life of violence and destruction, contrasted by the evident happiness of his wife and daughter. At this stage you start to

Film
Although linear in approach, the film doesn’t always give a sense of time-perspective. There is no real explanation as to how much time elapses between events, from Sam’s epiphany to ultimate decision to pick up the gun. This to some may be a real flaw, or it may in fact not be of any importance at all.
opportunity for discussion. This is not a film for the feint-hearted and some of the scenes are very graphic. Yet the violence is far from overstated and those who have visited Africa and certain areas like south Sudan will no doubt give testimony to the accuracy of some of the scenes portrayed. But at its heart, this is the story of a man who found reason for his existence, the real question is whether the man we know as Sam Childers is so different from the man who was Sam Childers.
As a true story, it’s often difficult for a film to draw a neat conclusion to events, especially when the fight essentially continues and the effect is to give rise to more questions than answers about Sam Childers, his motives, his beliefs, ultimately his methods. Clearly Sam Childers is fully committed in his own mind that he does God’s will arguing that the end justifies the means, yet many Christians will struggle with this and ultimately the film creates a fascinating
