QPAC OVERALL SHARED SPACE SITE SPECIFIC
A NEW THEATRE
CATERING TO: // ballet // medium theatre shows (musicals) // large drama // intimate theatre ? // physical theatre ?
SHARED USE
// 1500 seat auditorium - minimise depth // wide + deep stage (20 x 20m) // rear stage + side stage // full size rehearsal space // felixible orchestra pit // possible extra smaller theatre? // rehearsal / studio / theatre combined
// all technical spaces that coincide with large lyric theatre // foyer spaces // accompanying box office / bars ect // ammenities
WILL SHARE FACILITIES WITH EXISTING : // loading dock // green room // some localised technical spaces // Pottential sharing of dressing rooms - overall 60 - 70 needed for theatre size // potential for demo / re-arrange back house // potential to connect to existing foyer
QPAT REQUEST
QPAT HAS RECOGNISED THE NEED FOR : // “adress” / definitive entry points // function space // increased studio space // intimate theatre space // physical theatre space // net increase of rehearsal space and dressing rooms // no net loss of storage and technical spaces.
QPAT IS LOOKING FOR: // lively and sustainable civic facility // engaging with landscape and civic facility Provide // appropriate set down and entry for patrons // appropriate set down and entry for performers

QPAT (building owner)
// require an enhancement of relationship // between audience and performer // complex relationship between: // position / appearance / lighting / sound // close psychological contact with audience // stage artists + directors require felxibility and artistic freedom
// require meeting + rehearsal + discussion + small event spaces. // these need after hour access – low security parameters
// crucial to manage flow of performance // logical location of spaces and circulation // storage support / technical spaces need to be able to achieve flexibility of stage for variety of performance types // all about efficiency and ease (costing ect) // need ability to build and workshop
// viable market – mixed use spaces // reasonable costs // presentation appropriate to the buildings use and history // controlled maintenance // ease of use // encourage the growth of local audience through involvement of local community and performance groups // crucial to attract alternative revenue streams
// lower the boundaries and create an intimacy between audience and performer // allow the stage and performance to be the ‘star’
// unique + adaptable multi use spaces that are easily accessible
// maximise effieciency and ease of use + maintenance // flexibility and adaptability // ability to build and workshop
// maximise mixed use // ease of use // attract alternate revenue streams

The ability to control movement into and out of auditorium. Patrons can be taken through traditional, processional entry that uses existing foyer with connection to new building, or through operable systems, the patron can be taken directly to the auditorium space, in a focal style. Also allows for variety in intermissions, giving flexibility of what open space to use depending on crowdsand type of show ect.

RESPONSE form - planning - experience Driven by the need to expand the amenities of Brisbane’s South Bank precinct, ‘the move’ is a 1500 seat theatre extension to the iconic, and recently heritage listed, Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Whilst serving predominately as the home of the Queensland Ballet, the theatre is designed using a unique, adaptability driven approach that provides the flexible platform for a broad range of theatrical and musical performances. Pushing the boundaries of traditional cultural centre design, the move encourages an artistically directed, holistic theatrical experience - one that sets the tone of a lively, connected and engaging civic facility. In addressing the tight site bounded by heritage form, the response required a unique stacking approach – taking the traditional sprawling plan of a theatre, and lifting back of house and rehearsal spaces upwards to encircle the fly tower. The resulting release of space allows for large, engaging front of house spaces that celebrate the theatre of light through voided floors and robust, yet refined façade systems. The honest expression of materials and a strong minimalist design approach has assisted in forming a building which is economical to construct, yet elegantly expressive through form and finish.
