The original plane Scale 1:1200
This is an apartment design made for a friend of mine. In recent years, many apartments in small scale house type have been developed due to the rising housing price, which have common characteristics of very small construction area, a storey height higher than the general commercial housing, which may allow designers to have a larger space in terms of satisfying the actual needs of users. My client is a typical office worker in the city, but usually she would work at home. Therefore, not only the most basic living functions, but also the home office functions shall be incorporated in such a small space. I treat the construction as a box, and the original spac e func tio n co uld be c hange d by simple movements of walls and doors inside the box as designed.

Location:Songjiang,Shanghai,China Building nature:Apartment Acreage:45 square meter
This is a small scale residential design in the suburb of Shanghai. More and more people move to the suburb not far from Shanghai downtown and live there for the purpose of cost saving and more comfortable environment due to the constant expansion of the city center. In this programme, my client is a freelance specialized in event planning, so she could work at home while living. The house is close to a rectangular box of 5 m *10 m * 4.5 m. My client hopes that the limited space could meet her requirements on work, meeting, party and living in terms of main functions, and, the more simple, the better.
Design Concept "Three" principle of traditional Chinese ancient architecture
This case is inspired by “Ternary Entry” principle in Chinese ancient architecture, which means that there are three rows of houses. Traditionally, in the courtyard of the first row, there are 3 southfacing rooms, a gate and a gate house with a function similar to the hallway in modern residence; in the courtyard of the second row, there are 2 wing-rooms in both east and west, and a spacious yard in the middle used for visitors reception and affairs handling; in the courtyard of the third row, there are 5 principal rooms, a wing-room in both east and west, and a yard in the middle. The third row bears the most privacy, being a private space of the owner enjoying family life. The entrance is similar to the first Entry in Chinese ancient architecture, where the storey height of 4.5 m makes this space seem more capacious. The second “Entry” and the third one are partitioned by 2 circular translucent sliding doors of different colors, bearing the main functions of the house. The visual overlapping part between the 2 doors presents a third color due to an overlap of 2 different colors, rendering a lovely space.

Design Introduction About the design reasons
Cupboard detail Scale 1:50
As a professional event planner, my client often holds team meetings at home under the circumstances that a large proportion of her work can be conducted at home because she has her own work team. Cross-sectional view Scale 1:200

In addition to work, her favourite hobby is cooking. Therefore, she would like to invite friends to her house for a home party, sharing delicious food together at weekends. So it is hoped that 4 most important roles expected towards the whole space could be available for the user, that is, work, meeting, cooking and a dining room of a hidden style capable of dining by many people.

INTRODUCTION OF ANTONY GORMLEY A nto ny ’s style creative idea has changed a lot since 1970s from a focus on the abstract objects expressed in the indoor space to the later body sculptures with the prototype of himself based on his thinking on the relationship between human and the world. In recent years, he has placed his works in large and outdoor spaces, and attached every work with a specific e nv i ro n m e nta l b a c k g ro u n d . T h e materials used for creation have also been gradually specified, among which iron sheet, steel wire and potter's clay have been typical materials of his works in recent years, while fabric, ceramic, glass and bread pieces have demonstrated his exploration and attempt in the materials adopted for creation. He has always tried the materials to the extent of his acquaintance for various different changes.

Design Concept Use the comfortable way to feel the world
When faced with traditional architecture or sculpture, people would always make judgements by the appearance chronically, resulting in occasional surface thinking rather than a contemplation towards the indepth of things.
From the view of creative ideas , Antony Gormley has been committed to exploring the relationship between human and space. Almost all of his wo r ks co nvey a m e s s a ge – viewing the outside from the inside. He has developed a habit of thinking in the dark as he has been forced to have a afternoon
nap in the dark environment, so window/daylighting is designed in a more deliberate way in this building. At the same time, it is advised that the world shall be viewed in some other way, which is what I wish to express by means of this work.

This is a work called "Room for the great Australian desert".It's in an unde finded location and never be published where it is.It is an object for the mind.It was thought as a 21st-century Buddha. The darkness of the body now held within this bunker shape of the minimun position that a body needs to occupy, a crouching body . There's a hole at the anus, penis level. There are holes at ears .There are no holes at the eyes. There's a slot for the mouth .it's 2.5 inches thick, concrete with a void interior. A site found with a completely flat, 360-degree horizon.

I have investigated the 3 floors of the building based on the study of the model, and I want to connect the floors in a different way. After a series of attempts, I arrange the main circulation in the core in the center of the building. The stairs function not only connecting the floor slabs, in fact, they play the most important role in the building in terms of circulation. The great wall erecting from the ground floor through to the roof can be seen in full at the entrance, while for the 3 parallel walls, a window of 40 cm * 40 cm is opened in each at the height of sight line, forming a straight line parallel with the rest platform of the second floor, through which the huge sculpture work can be seen.

T h e e nt i re b u i l d i n g has 4 main supporting walls, standing from the ground floor to the top of the building.
The little dark room located on the top of the building is the private space exclusively enjoyed by Antony Gormley. The public circulation will end before the access to the bedroom on the second floor.
The circulation inside the construction is very simple. The long and narrow stairs make people depressed and boring, but whenever the visitors arrive at a new platform, they may access an open and clear space, which is the feeling commonly conveyed by Antony Gormley's works.
The combination of walls and stairs creates a most special and important space of the building, in that a large sculpture in the center of the building could be appreciated by visitors from different angles and views through different walls.
Isometric view
The whole building will be a large exhibition hall. From the huge sculpture which is standing at the entrance, then the small exhibition spaces connecting the studios, the sculpture display stands interspersed in the living areas. It is available for visitors to enjoy the works in each floor by the only circulation and appreciate the huge sculpture from any angle of this building. That is the core of this project.

Different size of Antony Gormley's sculpture works
Antony Gormley often creates some sculptures beyond conventional scale. T h e s c u l p t u re o f h u m a n b o d y a s m e nt i o n e d a b o ve h a s b e e n produced in a variety of scales for exhibitions in different scenes and spaces. So there must be a large space for him to show his sculpture work beyond conventional scale .
Design of NO.93 Meiling Road,Shanghai,China,2012
The standing sculpture is to remind visitors that the universe is a vast space, in addition to the air, there is also another medium between human and universe, that is the earth. The way of Antony Gormley’s observing the world is conveyed by his sculptures.
Metal Studio
Plan 1 Scale 1:300
Rendering of Metal Studio
There are a total of 2 sculpture studios in the whole building. One is metal studio, and the other is clay studio. As a large portion of the works of Antony Gormley are made of metal materials, and in view of the particularity of metal processing which may lead to some accidents, a separate metal processing studio is designed for the purpose of security.
Lamplight illumes from the top of the wall to the dark and narrow sta i rs , m a k i n g t h e l i g ht m o re valuable for visitors. The narrow stairs of one meter wide is only available for the pass of one person, so when a visitor walks wherein, he may feel that he is moving inside the work created by Antony Gormley, and he would move in the direction as guided by the stairs.

All the windows designed on the faรงades of the whole building are for the purpose of the functions for interior space, such as lighting and ventilation. Each window is designed as a necessary element. Bending or adjustment of the body to an adaptable height shall be required for a visitor inside the building for the purpose of a view of the scenery outside from the window. There are a total of 3 entrances and exits in the building, among which there are 2 doors specifically designed for the studios with heights of 5 m and 10 m each in addition to the main entrance, being available for the access of sculptures of various dimensions and transportation facilities

Plan 2 Scale 1:300
The second floor is not only the living space of Antony Gormley, but also a means of displaying the life of Antony Gormley to visitors as I wish. The sculpture at the end of the corridor is facing the window to the south, as if it is looking out. A sharp contrast of dark and bright in the building is formed by the sunlight from the roof, which sharpness makes the building more thought-provoking. While the open space in the corridor is one of the best places for a view of the huge sculpture. Design of NO.93 Meiling Road,Shanghai,China,2012
Plan 3 Scale 1:300
The whole space of the third floor and above is private for Antony Gormley , where he can enjoy his time .The public transportation l i n e i s i nte r r u p te d af te r t h e platform which is located at the end of the stairs . The private and public spaces are completely isolated by a walnut door. T h e re i s a s m a l l p ro j e c t i n g balcony facing the north from where Antony Gormley could have a commanding view of flavour of life in the farm produce fair located in in the north of the building, which, thus happens to be a source of inspiration for him.
Design of NO.93 Meiling Road,Shanghai,China,2012
A small dark room is on the top of the building, with an access blocked before the entry to the bedroom, the room is designed to be an exclusive space for Antony Gormley ‘s meditation. In the whole room there is only a single bed, and on the top of the room there is a window designed with the reference to the height of Antony Gormley through which he can see the sky only when he is lying down. It is well known that Antony Gormley likes to observe the universe, and the window could bring a ray of light for the dark room, being also an important source of inspiration.

RECONSTRUCTION DESIGN OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOL Primary School, Wenzhou
Location: Baiquan, Wenzhou , PRC. Client: Baiquan Village. Floor Area: 2500 sqm
Site plan Scale 1:3000
A quartic field investigation has been made for this programme by a study group consisting of my three classmates and me, with 4 orientations selected for our design. My design is to reconstruct the local primary school. The most impressed thing for me is the openness of the primary school. As all over the village there are local people only, the security work is conducted in a very simple way. All the students and their parents are familiar with each other, which is very interesting. Therefore, the project could be made on the basis of the status quo well maintained.

School Ancestral hall
Ancestral hall
Location:Baiquan,Wenzhou Province,China Building nature:Primary School Acreage:2500 square meter
Design Reason Transformation of rural primary school The revival of rural life shall be rooted in the identity of originality. School and ancestral hall are complementary “treasure of a village. Compared to the constructions made of brick and wood and private ancestral hall of each family in consanguineous society, a school in civic society is more like a collection of biography of citizens in Baiquan village (and it is subject to a constant self updating). Its particularity lies in that it is now a very important full-open space for the identity of intergenerational villagers in addition to ancestral hall (it may even go beyond the significance of ancestral hall in this point) .
School
The primary school is located in Baiquan village in Wenzhou city, Zhejiang province, closing to Nanxi River. At first, it has been a small school merely, until 1960 when its name was officially changed to “Baiquan School”. The village has experienced 100 years of development, leaving only the primary school unchanged, which is still cultivating natives generation after generation.

Site Analysis The Hand-painted Original Facade
This is a hand-painted elevation that I use to describe the current status of this school. The main building has 4 floors and it is located in the west side of the mountain and near the Nanxi River. Almost every classrooms has the same shape and function without too much more decoration. All the sport machine can be seen. The whole playground contains one small size basketball court a 50-meter-long athletic track, a ping pong table, the toilet which is the only one for all the people in this school is located in the southeast of area.
Design Concept Connections–shall not be the ones of architectural forms only, but more of a convenient communication provided for users.
At p re s e n t , t h e re a re three independent buildings in the school: the teachers’dormitory, teaching building, audiovisual education building from west to east.
There are only two independent circulations in the school free of any connection in terms of traffic.
The first step of my design is to co nne c t the m to encourage people mix together.
Connection of the three buildings will produce 2 public circulations, by which the users may reach any place within the school as they wish.
At present, there are two entrances and exits in the northeast and southwest of the school. toilet quarters main classrooms stairs other classrooms
I design another entrance and exit in the middle of the wall of 110 meters long with the original two ones retained so as to connect the world inside and outside the campus.
All the functions of the school are independent due to restrictions on traffic and construction.
I try to connect the functions suitable for some type of users by changing the architectural form, so that these functions can be set in one building completely. In this way, the users may do whatever as they want to do elsewhere.
Design of Baiquan Primary School,Zhejiang,China,2015
The Analysis Of Massing The height below the fourth floor shall be the most suitable (as there a re a l a rge n u m b e r o f residential buildings in the north of the school), which could be seen from the study of the permutation and combination of the storeys. So my research is specialized in the height below the fourth floor. Under the premise of satisfying functions, dozens of different connection modes have been worked out by variations made in the general architectural forms
The Analysis Of Sunlight It can be found by a study on the influences o f i l l u m i n at i o n o n t h e construction at different times in different seasons (take the winter solstice and summer solstice for example) that sun lighting has been not ideal for the school in the morning and evening, so the faรงade shall be opened as much as possible, allowing the s u n l i g ht to g e t i n . At the same time, it is not appropriate for buildings of large mass or over height to be constructed in the south of the campus.

Common Space Rendring These are two renderings for the staircases on the first and the second floor. A meeting room used for meeting and discussion by teachers and students is designed at the end of staircase for each floor. The whole space is surrounded by glass, so that the meeting room could be exposed to the sunshine for a whole day, enjoying natural lighting. Besides, this space also plays the role of connecting the teachers and the villagers (parents), as parents waiting to pick up their children could wait in the waiting area beside the meeting room.

Daytime&Nighttime Rendrings The playground can fully meet the students’requirements on exercise and play, run or hide-and-seek (embedded wooden platform on the grassland is designed for outdoor cinema used at night with no altitude difference, thus being free of hidden danger) or simply lying on the grass and enjoying the sunshine. In the evening, the playground will become an open-air cinema, when all villagers will come, sitting on a specially designed embedded platform surrounded by the grass and a variety of plants. Exposed to the stars, people may feel as if they are in the universe.

The façade of the building is made of bamboo curtain splints of 3.5 meters wide, baked to black and covered with transparent paint. U p o n b a k i n g ,t h e b a m b o o co u l d b e improved a lot in terms of both flexibility and service time, and used as blind in the daytime, with its stripped shadow projected onto the floor, presenting beautiful figures. After the transformation of the school gate, pedestrians and vehicles may enter the school in two circulations separated, for which a parking lot is constructed at the entrance. Teachers’ dormitory is arranged on the hillside most distant from the gate, so the embarrassing situation caused by the original one at the entrance could be subject to a smooth settlement.

A PLAN FOR RURAL REVIVAL Rural planning, Taizhou
Location: Wuyantou, Zhejiang ,PRC . Client: Ningxi Township Gorvernment Floor Area: 10000 sqm
XL
Site plan Scale 1:7000
Wuyantou is a typical village in the south of Zhejiang province in China, bearing strong local characteristics in terms of both construction and diet. But the village has been in an under developed state over the years due to limitations in all aspects, resulting in an unwillingness of staying in the hometown by villagers. Most of the young people would like to go out of the village to seek for employment, which is very similar to the case in Baiquan village. A few aged persons staying in the village though have a good command of various special skills (especially in food production), it is hard for them to exert their talents. I wish that new vitality could be injected into the village through my planning and design aiming at young people’s returning to their hometown, so that the village could be in a state of prosperity for a long time, which is my ultimate goal.

Base situation Wuyantou Village
Wuyantou Village, Taizhou Province
Location:Ningxi,Zhejiang Province,China Building nature:Village Planning Acreage:90,000 square meter
The village called Wuyantou is located in the East China Sea coast,Huangyan Ning Shan town, founded in the late Qing Dynasty, now has 300 years of history and there are more than 110 architectures from Qing Dynasty reserved until now , the villagers live here, continuing the traditional farming life. Wuyantou Village in Chinese is interpreted as black stone because there is a myriad of stone there and the largest one with black was selected to be the entrance of the village by ancestors when they
began to construct this new village.
Some analysis of the village
Site Analysis
Design of Rural Revival,Zhejiang,China,2014
Phase 1 : Urben
Scale
With the development of online shopping and social networks, more and more people shop online, which could be an important breakthrough for Wuyantou village in that it has its own unique traditional food. The existing materials in the village and technology could be adopted in the repackaging or planning and design for the unique food“Shibingtong”(delicacy in thin rice wrapper), “Fanshuqinggao” (sweet potato cake), “Shoudaniangao”(hand made new year cake), characteristic baked roll and other food, which could be sold all over China by means of both online and offline marketing. The whole village can be divided into two sections,
Time : 1-3
years
a new one and an old one based on the time of construction. In view of the current situation ( in the old section, most of the villagers are the elders unavailable for labor production, but some of them are proficient in making traditional food with traditional skills) ,my plan for the first phase is mainly to be implemented in the new section, so as to develop the hidden craftsmanship in food production, and promote the sales of “Wangdaye Shaobing ” (a kind of baked roll), “Lidajie Shibingtong” (delicacy in thin rice wrapper) and “Daniangqinggao” (sweet potato cake) with traditional processing technique, bringing new economic benefits for Wuyantou village.
Phase 2 : Street
Scale
After 1-3 years of promotion and economic development by means of food sales in the early phase, I hope that commerce could be well developed by the construction of shopping streets on the premise that the villagers shall proceed with their uninfluenced normal farming lives. The big building in the center of the village, which serves as the center of the village activities and cultural display where a variety of exhibitions including the cultural activities are conducted, shall also play an active role. A good deal of businesses will be introduced,
Time : 3-5
years
which will lead to the development of catering and hospitality industry.
Phase 3 : Building
Upon the development of the shopping streets to a relatively mature phase, which would take 5 years or so, the villagers may be willing to have their residences renovated and refurbished for the purpose of supporting the development of tourism by providing tourists with accommodation and catering. High end hotels will be operated, and farm villages themed by different agricultural products will be renovated, by when Wuyantou village will become a destination for leisure at weekends and holidays by citizens in surrounding areas. There, visitors can not only taste the traditional handmade food, but also participate in all kinds of pastoral activities regularly organized by the village in specific traditional festivals, such as open day of "paddy filed", handmaking of new year cake and other activities. We have also renovated "Huang Xian Ancient Trail" used to transport

salt 300 years ago, shunting visitors at the entry of the village, where a large parking lot of 200 square meters has been built for parking by tourists and villagers so that no motor vehicle would be introduced into the village. After the tourists getting off from tourist bus, pedestrians and vehicular traffics would be separated by the roadway designed for logistics and transport and "Huang Xian Ancient Trail" designed for pedestrians. Along the river bank newly constructed, visitors may walk to the depths of the village while enjoying the beautiful landscape of the farmland. So far, a virtuous circle could be completed for the village, by which the villagers could rely on the skills left by their ancestors and crops for the development of food sales and tourism, enabling Wuyantou village to be China's most beautiful village. PHASE 1 Methed : Food Export Manner:In the first stage only rebuilt in the village area, several food processing plants into the village, the rest intact.
No.1- No.4 buildings in the drawing are modern 5-floor villas located in Wuyantou village, but all the year round there are only a few aged ones living there, so I plan to set the processing facilities of Shibingtong(delicacy in thin rice wrapper), baked roll, new year cake and sweet potato cake in these buildings, which could make an effective use of the buildings without impacting the daily lives of the villagers, and bring economic income for them. No.5 and No.6 buildings closing to the food processing facilities will be

transformed into a logistics center and cold storage center, so as to ensure the most quick delivery of the most fresh food to consumers. No. 7 building will be transformed into a design center of the whole village, where the design team will settle for the preparation for later planning of the village. No. 8 building will be transformed into a temporary dormitory for accommodation of non-local workers, as the case may be.

In the first phase, reconstruction will be made in the new section of the village only, for which several food processing factories will be introduced into the village, leaving other places unchanged. Most of the constructions selected to be reconstructed in this phase are of steel reinforced concrete structure, which convenience for reconstruction will reduce the investment.
Uncle Wang Biscuits
Design of Rural Revival,Zhejiang,China,2014 Make a publicity for Wuyantou village with food. Food specialties in a repackaged style will be produced in the village and sold all over China. For each kind of food, there is a unique s t o r y a n d p r o d u c t i o n t e c h n o l o g y. Spokesperson will be the craftsman in the village represented in cartoon picture on all packagings, which may make the food products acceptable for consumers quickly.

At the beginning, a general propaganda could be made by means of the packaging of the food. In the second phase, the local products could be connected with commercial elements. Shops and DIY hand workshops could be developed by a design of a few selected uninhabited houses in the old section of the village, where visitors can experience the fun of making food personally. The big building well maintained in the center of the village will be reconstructed into a cultural display center of the village.
The design for shopping street is to be conducted by the reinforcement and reconstruction of the existing building. The traditional buildings are of wooden structures having experienced severe tests by hundreds of years of wind and rain, which roofs, although have tilted, are standing still, by which the firmness of traditional architecture could be demonstrated. Modern design is to be conducted based on the original structure by repair and reinforcement of the beam columns, by which vitality could be injected into the "old" village, which is also the main purpose for the second phase as planned.

The effect chart on the left shows the shopping street in the night, where the light is not so bright, and people could walk through the paths under the guidance of concealed lighting, while enjoying the chirps of insects and birds. The shopping street could be a good place for people living in the noisy city to relax.

The soul of the village is mountains, rivers and fields endowed by the nature. For the villagers, farmland is not only a landscape, but also an economic source for thousands of years. Therefore, in the third phase, all the farmland resources of the village will be subject to an effective planning, so that the villagers could still take advantage of the traditional foodproduction technology and crops for the development of food sales and tourism. At this point, a virtuous circle could be developed for the village, which would enable Wuyantou village to be one of the most beautiful villages in China.
