Summer Nichi Bei Bussan has been a fixture in Japantown for 67 years, a venerable department store that once sold Dickies work pants in “short sizes for the Japanese farmers in the area,” says store owner Arlene Tatsuno Damron. She moved there with her family from the Japanese-American internment camp where she was born during World War II, and during all those years, the exterior wall facing the store’s parking lot remained an elongated blank. Fall A MURAL OF HOPE The mural, Sophie Holding the World Together, is a portrait of seven-year-old Sophie Cruz, who has become a face of the American immigration reform movement. Born in Los Angeles to undocumented immigrants from Oaxaca, Mexico, Sophie first made headlines in 2015 when she crossed a police barrier during Pope Francis’s visit to Washington DC to hand the pontiff a letter asking him to help all immigrant children‌
