n late October the city ordered the removal this mural. Though it was later reinstalled; the power struggle over free speech and censorship overshadowed message the artist was trying to convey. Jesse Corcoran is an artist and support worker in the Down Town East Side. This is what he had to say about the piece.
"I created this piece, the olympic rings with four unhappy faces and one happy face mostly hoping to get people talking about this issue. I work on the DTES with the most marginalized population in vancouver, who's lives consist of constant suffering. The government tells us there is not enough money to spend on programs to end this suffereing but on the other
hand we have the ability to shakle our children to a mounting multi billion dollar debt for a two week sports event. The powers that be seem to be ok with the majority suffering for the enjoyment of the minority. Jesse is now making t-shirts with this design.
