What I like:

What I don’t like:

I like the subheading that is in the middle of the page infront of the main image that is used to draw your attention I think it is a good was of showing what the magazine is mainly about. I also am quite liking the red outline of the Time magazine since it is the only magazine that have used a border in it and I think that it is a good technique to use since not a lot of magazines use that technique so it will make your magazine stand out of the crowd to the custormers.

I do not like the crowded front cover like the Inception front cover since I think there is too much going on and it makes it way too busy. I also do not like the mens health one with the white background and way too bland colors that have been used and I think the black text on the white background the type should a be a lighter shade of black to make it easer to read and I do not think the use of orange is very good the use of red is but the use of the orange on the type at the top is not.

I like the GQ magazine at the top left with the picture of Daniel Craig since the subheadings that are around him are simpler and that is the sort of magazine that I want to create.

I like the top middle magazine cover with the V only in color I think it helps draw the attention to the middle of the screen and the model which is good I also like the fact it is a very basic cover with the text on the sides of the page so it frees up alot of the room on the cover which is good,

I really don’t like the one at the top left it has relied really too much on the color from the masthead of the cover and it has really not worked well at all in my opinion, I think it would look a whole lot better if it was on a basic black background instead of the one that it is on.

What I don’t Like:

I like the basic GQ masthead design that is used on all of their magazines it is simple and effective and you can recognise the meagazine even if they cover half of it with one of the stars that they have based it on.

I think the Rythym, Pride and Fashion magazines have way too much information of their front which really drowns out their masthead and it doesnt work their use of colors are way too much and it makes their masthead blend into the background of the image which in my opinion is not a good thing since that is the second thing that you want customers to notice when they buy your magazine.

What I like:

What I don’t Like:

References:

This time around I aahve tried to pick magazines that have got simple mastheads and ones that do not use a lot of type to make their magazine covers look busy which to me is not a good idea because it really drowns out the impact of the masthead. I also really like the way they have encorported the magazine name into the one at the bottom right with the V so it looks like it is a 3d image instead of a basic 2d one.

I don’t really like the design of the M.A.D magazine cover since it seems to be following an older design of magazines in its cover and I am not so keen on them sort of magazines I really like the look of the more sleek modern ones when it comes to mastheads and covers... I dont really like the type on the interviewer magazine since it is really just far to script like in its features and I think some people would find it a bit more difficult to read so I think maybe a simpler font would be better to use.

About Richard Turley:

Richard Turley’s Designs:

References:

Richard Turley was the lead director of designer of Bloomberg Businessweek and he helped develop each of them the magazine company that he worked for mainly created political front covers which suited the time and normally fired shots at the current goverment in the USA. He is no longer working for them anymore and is now working for MTV.

Richard Turley personally worked on each of the front covers that Bloomberg Business week produced I think he was quite good at the job and think he should of stayed working there so he could create more he normally focused on making some either very effective and impacting or somethig that is humorous and people can laugh about ie the picture at the bottom left but it also had an important message.

About Little White Lies:

Little White Lies Designs:

References:

Little White Lies is an internationally distributed movie magazine. It has been described as one of the “magazines at the vanguard of the independent publishing movement”. It is published by London-based media company TCOLondon, who also publish the DIY culture magazine Huck Magazine.

The design of each issue is inspired by its feature film, often represented on the cover by an illustration of its lead actor. The cover film also influences interior aspects, such as editorial icons, chapter headings and custom typefaces. However, the overall template of the magazine remains the same.[citation needed] It was called “the best-designed film magazine on the shelf” in The Guardian.

Little White Lies rose out of the ashes of Adrenalin, an adventure sports and lifestyle magazine. When Adrenalin’s publisher went bankrupt, a group of friends working there decided to turn designer Danny Miller’s student degree project “Little White Lies: Issue Zero” into a full-fledged magazine.

About Empire:

Why I like Empire’s designs:

References:

Empire is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media. From the first issue in July 1989, the magazine was edited by Barry McIlheney and published by Emap. Bauer purchased Emap Consumer Media in early 2008. It is the biggest selling film magazine in the United Kingdom and is also published in the United States, Australia, Turkey, Russia, and Portugal. Empire organises the annual Empire Awards which were sponsored by Sony Ericsson, and from 2009 sponsored by Jameson.

Empire are my favourite out of the three artists that I have decided to do research on and the reason I like their designs so much is beacuse thye use subtle effects to make their magazines look really good adn effective without filling up the page with useless crap and that is the sort of thing that I want to go towards for the final magazine at the moment as something like the captain america page is what I have in my head at the moment but more towards my previous projects ideas instead of what they have there.

Front Cover Experimentation:

I think all of the ones that are here but I am not so sure if they would look this good if I put them onto the computer since some of the effects and layouts that I want to use could be completely different once they are digitalized. I will try to stick to these sorts of layouts while I transfer the layouts into a indesign document.

If I was to have a favorite it would most likely be the top middle one because I like the effect on the front cover and I can link it into signage which is a good thing since I could link it into my city in flux project or even just use the black and yellow warning lines to create a theme for my magazine.

If I was to do them again I think I would include more information on the draft versions like some color or something and maybe a bit more information instead of just writing subheadings everywhere... Maybe even some basic drawings on the layouts of what I want to put on there.

I am not sure which one I really like the most I dont really have a favourite of these three either since I want to look at the other three that I have created but haven’t put them onto indesign yet so I a

I think the key thing for most of the designs that I have created are the lines which split up the masthead and the issue number from the rest of the page also I think they help create a good effect for the page once the images are on in the background I think I will have to turn them a different color maybe white to make them stand out.

I think having what the issue is about in the middle of the page is a good idea I just need to make sure that the subheading and the lines do not interfere with the main image that is going on the front cover and I also need to make sure that the image doesnt interfere with the sub heading.

I do kind of like this because of the unique shape that is in the middle where I can put my images of my work I think it looks quite good I just need to work on the placement and position of the text inside the two circles and maybe play around with the barcode as well.

I think this is my favourite one so far and I would like to use this possibly as my final front cover I will still have to look at using different mastheads on this layout and see how it looks.

I thouught I’d try and put the masthead in the middle of the page just to give it a try and surprisingly I actually quite like it I will just have to have a look at it when I put the images on because if the iamge is too busy in the center and has some dark colors it will make the text in the middle really hard to read.

Front Cover Digital Experiment

Daniel Whitworth Graphic Design

I have decided to go through some of my previous artwork to select a nice background that I think would suit a magazine over some of the others, I think that this background is a suitable image for a background of a magazine because it has a series of colors light and dark, I think this is possibly the strongest contender for the spot out of these three images because it just looks already fit for the role.

This second image could be a good image to use for the background of my cover because of the colors that are all in the middle so it would allow me to place the text where ever I needed it to be, I also think the main focus point of the image is very good as well which will make it very suitable for a front cover so I can place subheadings all around it.

The third image here I picked because its one that I wouldn’t really want to use so I thought it might be a good idea to include some that I am not going to use and talk about why I would not use them, One of the main reasons that I would not want to use an image like this is because there is no focus point on it and there is not enough light so I would struggle to make darker text stand out on an image like this.

Low Polygon Mountains:

Low Polygon Mountains:

I thought it would be a good idea to show how I went about creating each of the backrgound that I have used on my front cover. I started to look around and specifically at tutorials based around the program Cinema 4D since I wanted to learn how to use it properly and see how it could improve and refine my ideas in my present and future projects. For this I went to one of the my artists research Mt. Mograph who have just recently started to go into Low Polygon modelling on Cinema 4D which is exactly the area of expertise that I want to start learning since I have had a few basic workshop sessions on Cinema 4D already. I followed the YouTube video how he did it and changed things slightly to make it my own and unique I will link the video to do this instead of talking through everything I did since there is not enough room on the page to do so.

I think the Low Polygon Mountains work really well and I am going to look at maybe creating a hologram projector which will project these sorts of images and other Low Polygon models which will be displayed by this new high-tec futuristic version of the Golden Record that I am going to recreate myself.

Low Polygon Island:

This is another attempt at creating a Low Polygon landscape that I did again following the tutorial from Matt at Mt. Mograph who does some really good Cinema 4D videos which are very good for people from beginners to experts. I wanted to create something that was on its own island since I thought that would be easer to intergrate into my hologram Idea.

Again I am not going to talk through the entire process of this 3D model since it would take just far too long and take up too much room on my research sheet so I will link the video that I followed below so you can see exactly what I did, he added some more things into this like some buildings and a aeroplane but I did not want to do this since I just wanted a basic landscape free of any sort of earth artifacts.

I think the Low Polygon island is very good and I am really looking forward to be working with it to turn it into a hologram I think I might have to go back and change the way the water is going off the edge to make the hologram look better and keep it inside the box that I am going to be putting round the hologram to keep it contained. Again I am going to be looking at Holograms and their projecters to see what sort of thing I can come up with because I think the combination of this with Low Polygon could really create something which looks really good and is very unique and I am especially up for putting in the time to create this as well.

Cinema 4D Wallpaper:

Since this was my first attempt at using Cinema 4D since the workshop week I had been wanting to give the program another go and since the Low Polygon effect is created so well in Cinema 4D I went looking on YouTube to find some tutorials. I found a YouTube channel called Mt. Mograph and I followed their tutorial to create this effect above.

At first I had to open Adobe After Effects CC and then create a MAXON Cinema 4D file which then opened up Cinema 4D itself and I began to follow the tutorial, which led me through a series of different stages from creating a simple square to rotating it and applying a material texture and color to the cube to create the Low Polygon effect.

The hardest part of this tutorial was rendering just the simple image of the composition that I chose to use to I ended having to use the internet to find out how to do it turns out I had to just simple click Composition>Save Image As and then render it to my desktop as a JPEG image.

I decided the main thing that I needed to look at was the typography that I was going to put into my front cover and the fact I need to make sure that it stands out properly and make sure it is easy to read, I have placed white text at the top and the bottom to show that the white text that is at the top would not stand out because of the light that is at the top and the white and light blue that is there also makes the text very difficult to read but the text at the bottom stands out completely because of the darker green colors that are at the bottom.

Since white does not stand out at the top but it does at the bottom I decided it might be a good idea to look at something darker so I decided to look at the color black to see if it would encounter the same problem as the white text, since the text is a lot darker it stands out a hell of a lot more at the top but I think because of the darker colors at the bottom it makes it look a bit busy and creates a bit of difficulty when it comes to reading it.

Since I have tried white and black as the colors for my placeholder masthead I thought it would be good to trial a few different colors in one, so I decided to use Cyan, Yellow and Magenta which makes up every color that we can think of so it kind of makes it a perfect combination, from this I can tell that certain colors would definetly not work at the top of the cover like yellow and blue because of the blue colors that are at the top, on the other hand the colors at the bottom could work but I think they might need some sort of outline to make it stand out a bit more.

I think that the white text on this image doesn’t work as well at the top or ther bottom because of how the image is a lot brighter all around the edges unlike the previous image, this might cause me a problem when I am picking the subheadings to put around the island, It is also a good image because there is a focus point in the middle to focus the attention of the reader.

New Visual Language

On this background the black text works a lot better than the white one because of the brighter colors that are used in the image helps contrast the text to make it easier to read I think If I was going to use this text color I think I might have to reduce the blackness of it to around 75-90% to make it a bit weaker but it will still be visible and I think it would look a whole lot better.

Island Background

I have also tried to use Cyan, Magenta and Yellow on the cover again here to see what sort of colors stand out and what don’t, on this one because it is so bright and the background image is so bright it makes them very hard to see because there is barely any contrast between the colors I think darker colors would work a whole lot better for the cover.

New Visual Language

The white masthead placeholder works a lot better on this cover because of how dark the image is, there is no problem at all with the contrast of the text but I think that I should be able to make it darker by abound 25% and it will still be able to be visible easily, I think the white text would be the best to use on this cover or bright colors could be used instead and they would all be visible.

New Visual Language

The Black masthead on here does not work at all it is completely not readable at the bottom but is kind of visible at the top but I think because of the problems with the cover and there being no focus point on the image I don’t think that I will use it as my cover just because of how dark it is and dark does not stand out on a shelf.

Low Poly Background

Bright colors seem to work fine with the background but again I do not think that it will be a good idea to use this background anyway I know the text stands out at the bottom and the top and I could even put a bit of a fade on the text maybe or something to help it fade it a bit better or even lower the opacity of the type to make it blend into the background a bit more.

I am going to be looking at what my layouts look like on each different background to see which ones stand out and which ones do not to see if the colors on the background makes a difference on the effectiveness of the layout, I have picked my favourite three layouts. I think that this layout works quite well will the background only when the colors of the text is pure white or close to it.

I do like this layout because everything is at the bottom of the page so it frees up a lot of room for the background which I think is a good idea so it frees up the majority of the focus point and there is more room for the target audience to see the background.

I thought that this was my weakest layout but on this cover I actually think it becomes my strongest and I think out of the three that I have here I think this one is the best and I will take this as one of my three final layouts that I might use.

This is the second background image that I have chosen to use, I think that this layout is probably the second best layout that I have here because of how the main focus point in the middle is clear and the text is above and below I think the only improvement on this I think is the main masthead to be at the bottom like it is in the next layout.

I think this one is my favoured layout because of how everything is at the bottom and this frees up the rest of the page so there is no clutter covering the image that is in the background and I also think because of the light at the top I think the mountains are the main focus point.

I don’t think that this layout is very good because no matter which colors I use for the masthead in the middle the color cannot be see as it goes over the white and grey areas of the mountains so I do not think that this would be a good idea to follow for a layout.

I think that this is the second best layout for this background I think because there is no masthead in the middle so it leaves the island in the middle unclouded and un busy so I think it is quite good.

For the second background I think that this is the best one because all the text and the masthead is at the bottom which does not clutter up the image of the island and therefore makes it look cleaner there is one thing that I would change here is the barcode I am starting to feel that it is not needed and to me it does not look professional on the front cover.

The third layout clearly does not work because it covers up the island in the middle and to make it stand out woud be quite difficult since I have to change the colors fo the text and the background image gets lighter and darker around where the masthead would be.

Third Layout:

I think that these final three layouts are the best that I have chosen out of the three of each that I have done before, I think that all three of these layouts are very good but I am going to try and look at the advantages and disadvantages of each cover.

This was initially my favorite layout for my cover but I think it has fallen maybe evven to my least favorite now that I have looked at it a bit longer and considered some over options the main reason I do not like it is because there cover is just way to busy and I think it needs something that breaks up the cover a bit more something like a border or something I think would help nicely.

This is the third and final of my initial front cover layout and background designs I am actually stuck between all three of them so I might have to get some other people to vote for the one that they think is best and see what the outcome is then futher develop that layout with some more fonts and maybe play with the layout a bit more.

I think the first cover is very good and I wouldn’t of normally even considered it before until I did some extra experimental work on my front cover and now this has gone from being my least favorite cover to being one of my overall favorites, the only downside to this is the fact that there is a barcode on the cover and I do not like that.

I think the first layout isn’t a very good one because sure its got some unique shapes in it and I could turn out quite well but I think because of the obscene shape in the middle would make it quite difficult to place a good image of my work in there so I do not think this would be a good one to use also because of the way the type is at the bottom I think it works well at the top but it really doesnt at the bottom.

I actually quite like this one because everything is at the bottom of the page and I have a bit of room to the left of the barcode to place any sort of masthead that I want really if I need it to go bigger and then the barcode can come a bit further down to free up some space for the image that I am going to put behind it if I decide to change it. Overall I think the type is good on this one other than the part at the very bottom with the issue number and sub title I think I might need to work on that a bit more.

I think this and the last one is my favourites the only thing pulling me towards this one more is because there is more space in the middle and things aren’t clumped up at the bottom so it makes it look less busy since I am going for a simple cover design, I think I definetly need to look at some way of making the black stand out more on this background or change it to white and see what sort of effect it has one the cover but I need to make sure all the type on the page can be read easily.

Development Of Cover:

Final Cover w/o Masthead:

For the start of the cover I think it is quite good but I was unable to tell since there was a lack of a background image to help give me an idea of what I wanted so I didn’t really know what I needed to change untill I added it to the cover. I think the placement is quite good but it still needed a bit of tweaking before it was right.

Next I added the background to the image and I thought it just looks to plain and needs a bit more of a professional magazine look so I decided to borrow Time magazines idea and add my own blue border to my cover which I think helps make it look a lot better than what it was, I am also going to try different backgrounds later on I think if this one doesn’t work with my final masthead but if it does work I will mostlikely just stay with this background.

I think this looks really good I think I might have to look at the color of the text and change it so it isn’t pure white and make it 90% white or something and once I’ve done that I think it should be done. Also I decided to remove the barcode on my magazine since I do not think it looks that good on the front cover at all it seems to just ruin the entire look that I am trying to go for maybe I can put it on the contents page or the backcover or just not have it at all.

Third Test:

This is the normal background that I have chosen without any changes to it, I think that it is a bit dark so I might try and light up the background a bit more and see what it would look like and see if it would work better or worse...

I decided to raise the brightness of the image by 50% here and you can now see the colors a bit clearer and they stand out more and I think this looks a lot better than the first one because it is just way to dark.

For the third background I decided to raise it up by another 50% and now the colors are even clearer and you can start to see the blue that is at the bottom of the image, I think this is the one that I am going to go with mostlikely since it is a lot brighter and the colors are more distinguished.

Black Border:

Gradient Border:

This is the original design without a border, I thought it would be a good idea to try and see if a border would work with my design. I thought it would be a good idea to create a border on the page which I think would help make it look a bit more professional.

This is what I thought would be the best border to use is a black one I tried a few different colors like blue, yellow and red but it just doesn’t work at all because of the colorful background that I am using, I think it helps give some more shape to my front cover and helps make it look a bit more professional since I am going to try and work towards something similar to the Time magazine.

Instead of looking a a whole range of different colors I normally use a gradient of several colors to see if a border color would work and I do not think any color other than black would really work on the cover since there is so much color already in the background so I needed something plain but simple which would fit with it.

First Tweaks:

Second Tweaks:

Third Tweaks:

I thought I would make this page since I wanted to make several minor tweaks to my front cover. At first I just tweaked the thickness of the lines and reduced them from 1 pt to 0.5 pt to make sure they are not too thick, and I also reduced the horizontal scale of the “Issue No - 1 Form Follows Function” to 85% since i thought it was spaced out to much.

For the second tweak that I wanted to make is the removal of the barcode, I normally do not like the barcode on the front cover so I think that I want to remove it since I don’t think it looks as professional, if I am going to use a barcode further on in my magazine I will either want to put it on the back cover with my manifesto or maybe even put it somewhere on the contents page. I could even create a packet for the magazine to be in and then it could be on there but I just don’t feel that it belongs on my front cover.

For the third and Final tweak that I made before I move onto my masthead design is I removed the issue number at the bottom and just put what the magazine is based on instead, I still might look at the lines that I have used to split the page up and see if anything looks better since the line at the bottom is a bit too strong for the type. This is my final cover so far I might come back and do some additional changes to it later on.

Masthead 5-6:

I like the first two mastheads that I have created but I think they are too simple and are not eye catching enough which is a very bad thing maybe I could try applying some color to them to see what sort of effect that has on them. Also I do not like the really long title of the magazine since I have noticed that other magazines have simple one word titles like; “Empire”, “Vogue” and “Time” there are only a small few that have more than one word titles and I think I might be able to compress the title.

For my third and fourth I tried to accomodate the two ideas that I wanted to impliment into my masthead from the previous experiments I think the color really helps the text stand out a lot more than it was in the previous attempts, I chose the colors Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black for the four main colors since that are the four main colors that everything is visually displayed to us these days. Also I looked at shortening the title of the magazine I think “NVL” works well but just incase anyone doesn’t know what it means I am going to place it below the title so people can see what it actually stands for.

For my fith and sixth versions of a masthead I looked at encorporating a different font into the look of my masthead I thought I would take a different approach at changing the colors and decided to take the type into Adobe Photoshop to apply some different overlay effects onto the digital type which I thought suited the digital age that we are in. I think that this is my favourite masthead and I am going to try and use this one for my final if I cannot I will come back and try to adjust it so it can be used.

Masthead 5-6:

I think the general idea behind these two here is good and I think I am going to want to try and create some different ones using the same effect since I think the CMYK effect is a good effect to chase up on to see what it looks like since they are the colors which are used to display the majority of things visually in this day and age.

I have noticed that it says NVM instead of NVL but I cannot change it so I am just going to go with it, I think the NVM one does look really good and I am going to try and use it on my final cover and see what it looks like hopefully it looks good if not I am just going to use this font but on a white filler instead of CMYK effect so it stands out.

I think these two are quite good and if I was going to go for a vertical title on my cover I would definetly use the bottom one here, I kind of like the one with just the first letter of the words in the CMYK effect but I do not know I don’t think it would look that good on the front cover so I am going to leave it and stick with one of the others.

At first I was planning on using this font because I thought it looked simple and effective but over time as I have been developing it I has started to not like it slowly so I wanted to change it into something else.

This was the second type option that I came up with which I think is a good idea since we show all our information and data digitally so I thought a digital font would fit the masthead quite easily and look good, in the end I do not thinnk that this is a good font to use for this so I am going to look for another one because the digital font is not really good at being small and is more for bigger text.

This is a very simple font with thin lines to make up the letters and I think I really like this because I feel that the low polygon effect suits this kind of font because of how simple both the effects are and the type. I am thinking that this will be my final cover and I think it is pretty effective.

From what I have noticed the majority of magazines that are out now use a basic sans-serif font which I think I could just use Helvetica and it should be fine, I could look at using some serif fonts but I don’t really think it would look very good but that is my opinion and I think that I am just going to stick with a sans-serif font.

I think color has a huge effect on the subheadings that are used on magazine front covers like the Tomb Raider one above the color they have used for the subheadings cannot be read that easily so I think I need to be careful of what I use to make sure it can be read, I think the size of the font is also important I think I should use a base 12pt size for the less important text then maybe 14-16pt text for the important text.

Final Subheading:

I think they type that I have chosen for my final cover is very good since I think the digital type font that I have chosen for the title of my magazine suits with the theme of New Visual Language since in this digital era that we are currently going through a lot of things are shown digitally so I thought it would be a good idea to try and encorporate that into my final type that is on my front cover.

I tried to use different backgrounds on this cover but I felt that the base mountain region background looks the best and I think it has a nice balance of colors with the blue border that is on my cover, one of the main reasons I decided to go with this background is because the white color stands out a lot more because of the darker colors that are at the bottom and lighter ones that are at the top.

I decided to not have any subheadings on my cover since I want to go with a more minimalistic cover I had a try with the cover having some subheadings and I do not think it works very well plus with me using white text on my cover as the cover goes up the cover gets brighter and whiter so I can’t really use white text without changing the color or adding some sort of outline onto it which I think just ruins the minimalistic cover that I am trying to go for.

I really like the simple page effects like the middle bottom one but I think I might want to use a combination of some color coding and then some sort of image in the middle of the page to spread my contents page out a bit so it is not too busy. I kind of want to create a mix of the bottom left and bottom middle so a bit of color and then a few images to make it look interesting but I need to make sure that I keep to my minimalistic effect that I am going for.

I dont like the way the magazine at the top left has placed the page numbers on the image itself I don’t think it really goes very well with the over all minimalistic design, I kind of like the way Q magazine has used the red ribbon and then white text on top of that to make their subheadings stand out a lot more I think that might be a good thing for me to do in combination with my color coding of my contents page.

I also like the way Mojo has used basic black lines the break up their contents page which is something that I have been experimenting with on my front cover and is something that I wouldn’t mind putting onto my contents page, I also think that the red ribbons on the bottom middle one is a good technique but I don’t really think that the black text on the ribbon is a good idea and I think that white would work a lot better.

I am not so sure about this second contents page layout that I have here I think having the title at the top of the page completely throws off the layout that I am going for throughout my magazine and I think it is a bit too simple with just the text going down the middle I might have a play with that and see what sort of layout I can kind of come up with.

I think having a circle in the middle of the page is a good idea since I can place an image of some more Low Polygon work in the circle which I think would be a good idea I could even play around with adding a few more circles to the contents page maybe but I do not want to make the contents page look too busy since I am going for a minimalistic magazine design.

I kind of like this sort of design with the page numbers with subheadings on the sides of the page and then some sort of pattern or image in the middle of the page which I think would look quite good, I could try and put a image on the background which are only just in the hexagons I think it could create a nice effect for my contents page.

I think maybe an idea of splitting the contents page up into sections would be a good idea so I can make sub groups for each project that is going in my magazine to help me organise them a bit better and I think I should try and combine this with the hexagon idea and see what it looks like and that possibly could be my contents page for my magazine.

I think this might be an interesting contents page to look at with the picture being inside the hexagon shapes with white borders on the to split the image up to create a interesting effect, I could also look at creating some sort of embossed effect for the image to give it just one more effect. I also think the page numbers being on the side of the page is a good idea but I am going to have to think about the gutter in the middle and the amount of room that I will have for my subheadings to go in.

I think this is my favorite contents page layout at the moment just because of how simple it is and how the page uses some basic lines to split the page up like I have done for the masthead and the subheading on my front cover, I think it would be important to go through and make sure I keep some sort of pattern all the way through to keep it consistent with what I have done at the start of my magazine.

I think the use of the hexagons in the middle of the page was a good idea but now I’ve looked at it for quite a while I feel that the effect that it used to create isn’t as good as I thought it was so I don’t think I am going to use this layout just because I do not think that it is that good, I even tried to change the borders of the hexagons to white but I still don’t think it looks much better.

I think this is my favorite one so far but I just need to find something to put at the bottom of the contents page since it is so plain, other than that I think it looks pretty good I have also tried to encorporate my font that I have used on the front cover that I am going to try to use as my main font through out this magazine design, I have left part of it in the secondary font that I am going to use which is Helvetica depending on how the next set of development phase goes.

I do kind of like this first contents page that I have created I think it is simple and effective but it is a bit too simple and looks like something that would be in a professional business booklet not a graphic design magazine based on New Visual Language and because of this I do not really want to use it.

I think the second contents page that I have made is a lot better and I think is a big improvement on the previous page since it suits a graphic design magazine a lot more, the only problem with this is the fact the image in the middle does not fit correctly and I do not think it would look how I imagined it in my head so I am not really fond of the design.

The third contents page I think is the best one so far because of how I have split the magazine into three sub categories, and given each of them a color code which I decided to use Cyan, Magenta and Yellow since these are the colors that everything is made up of in this digital age of visual language that we are in.

CMYK Color:

Green-Blue:

Pink-Green-Purple:

At the moment I think this is the best looking one just because of how it incorporates the colors that we use on our computers to create any color that we can imagine.

I think Green and Blue kind of works but I am not so sure because I want to try and use the colors that are over the sections on the contents page as the color code for the actually page color so I think I might have to try to similar but slightly different colors to do this.

I tried to use Pink Green and Purple to try and give the magazine some contrast but I do not think it works that well and I am going to try what I said before and look at colors that are only slightly different instead of looking at colors that are completely different, I am thinking about just making a Cyan > Blue > Navy Blue or something like that I think that would work.

Blue Block:

I think the blue fade works quite well but because of the blue border I think it just makes the contents page look way too blue and its a bit overwhelming so I do not think I am going to use this contents page.

I do kind of like this one but I think the colors are just not right when they are in a block and I think the gradient version looks a hell of a lot better than this one so I dont think I am going to use this one.

It is the same again with this one really I do not think the block colors work very well and I prefer the gradient fade so I think I am going to go back to that.

100% Opacity Fade:

50% Opacity Fade:

25% Opacity Fade:

I dont think this 100% opacity works very well because the colors are far too overwhelming for the text that is on the page so I do not think it really works that well so I think one of the lower opacity ones are the better choice for this.

I think somewhere around this level of opacity is where I want it to be I think maybe a bit lower and then it should be fine to use since I just want a simple background with a bit of color on it.

I think that this is about right maybe it should be around 30% and that would look a lot better so you can see the individual colors easier and the text is still easy to read.

Opacity 35%:

CMY Text-Black:

Colored Outlines:

I have put the opacity around 35% and I think this is the perfect mark for the color and the text to be balanced, next I am going to play around with the color of the typography and see if that would work or not.

I do think that the colors work really well with the cyan and magenta but the yellow is just far to difficult to use so I decided to see what they look like on a black background and I think it works a lot better there but I dont want it to look tacky by putting all the text on a black background so I am going to try and put an outline on them or something and see what I can do there.

I really dont think any of these work because of the way the cutom font that I am using has took to the outlines and it makes it look way to not minimalistic since that is the theme that I am going for so I do not think I am going to use this sort of way to make the text stand out since I think it looks silly.

Gradient Lines:

I think the white lines looks the best at the moment and is quite possibly my favorite since it contrasts with the background so well but I think maybe a darker line might look better to help split the page up.

I have tried to put black lines in between the sections and I do not think it looks that good because it looks like the lines are hovering over the page and no a part of them like the white lines do I think maybe some sort of greyish line would look the best.

Just so I didn’t miss anything out I tried to apply the gradient to the lines just to see what it could look like and I do not think it works well but it kind of does I am really 50/50 on the way this looks and I am not so sure what to do with it.

White Lines:

No Lines:

At first I liked the 10% white lines but now I do not I don’t think they stand out enough and the purpose of the lines is to help split the page up into sub-sections so you can tell what each part is about and I don’t think they do that very well.

I think the white lines look the best since they split up the page easily, they are very visible and they go with the color scheme of the background which makes it a lot better so I think I am going to stick with the white lines.

I thought I’d try another go at the page without any lines on it but I do not think it looks right without some sort of line structure helping to break the page up so I am not going to go with this one.

Third Layout:

I like the first layout since it is the first one that I chose to go with but I do not think my choice of placement for the text on this page is very good and I think I need to go back over it and change several things just to make it look more like a contents page.

I think this is a massive improvement on the previous layout but I do not like the huge gap at the bottom of the page so I want to try and find a way to get rid of the gap at the bottom of atleast make it smaller if I can.

I think I have done a good job on making the box at the bottom smaller and I think it is at a stage that I am happy with it but I am still going to try a few more layouts just incase and then I will decide on which layout I like the most and then it will be nearly done.

Third Layout:

I think this is my favorite layout so far with the new type that I have worked through and fixed since I added an additional page for each section that was not needed and now I know how many pages will be in my magazine as well.

I like the use of a different fonts for the subheadings of each section and I think I have chosen a good font to be used on this page since the digital revolution that we are in. I also think the use of color on the page is good but I might change the black text to 90% instead just to make it a bit less in your face.

For the third layout I went ahead and changed the color of the text to 80% and I think it looks a lot better because the text actually fades with the page and it fits in a lot more and is a whole lot easier to read.

I think the layout of my contents page is good and I think they way the colors are over each section of the page also will help me create a color scheme for my magazine depending on which section of the magazine that I am up to.

I think the typography that I have used suits the purpose very well because of how we are in a digital age and the magazine is about New Visual Language which is displayed in a digital format using the colors Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.

I like my contents page quite a bit and I think it does its job quite well, The only thing that I really want to look at is what it would look like if I decided to put it over two pages instead of one and then I think it will be finished pretty much.

I am not so sure about this double page spread for my contents page I want to use it but I am not so sure about the gap that is there in the middle. Other than that I think it is a pretty good contents page.

One of the main reasons I want to use this instead of the one page contents page is because there would be a page that is blank after the contents page and by making this page double I have stopped that from happening.

I think this is a very good A3 design for my contents page and I will mostlikely use it if I am going to use two pages for my contents.

I have decided to change the type that I am going to use throughout my magazine titles and subheadings from DS-Digital to another font called Champagne and Limousines...

The reason for this change is because I felt that the type that I had chosen doesn’t really go well with the Low Polygon background that I have used on my front cover and so since i want to keep consistencey throughout my magazine I have decided to change it.

Another reason that I do not like the DS-Digital type is because it is a bulky font and is meant for bigger typography than what I was going to use it for and it made parts of it look oversized and the letters just didn’t look right when it was at 12pt so I decided to make the change ot a thinner font and I think it has worked out for the best.

For my double page spread layouts that I am going to use in my magazine, I want to keep the same style of layouts throughout my magazine so I think I am going to design 3 different layouts that I am going to use: I think it will be a design layout, development layout and a final layout/definition layout.

I think for each design layout I am going to have a big image on one side of the page showing my work and then on the other page maybe have a smaller image or have the other image bleed over the second page with some text talking about what I am doing and what I have done.

These are several other double page spreads that I like I really want to create something that has an image going over both pages and then some white text or atleast a color that contrasts with the background so it is readable, either that or just an image on one page and then the text on the other like the bottom right one with a big subheading and then smaller text underneath it.

I like all of these coers because they either combine the use of color in the image with the color of the text that they are going to use on the page like the color of the hat of the bottom right and then they have linked that into the color of the K and parts of the text that are on the second page.

The first two thumnails that I have created here is how I want my base magazine layout to look like so either a compilation of images on the left page of the double page spread or just one giant one and then the text on the right side of the page with a subheading in the color of the image, I am going to try and keep the color scheme the same for the text and images for each section of the magazine after each section is complete I think I could change it a bit.

For my second two thumbnails I think the top one is the best because there is no point having the text on the left side which people would read first and then the subheading on the right side, so I think if I got with this one I will have to go with the top thumbnail, I think that this is a good thumbnail but i am going to have to think about how it would work with the text and making sure the text contrasts with the image in the background to make it visible and readable.

I think this is one of my favorites to be used on my Earth Artifact section of my magazine because my final product can go inside the circle and then the text can be placed around the image and it can circle around my image like the whole final product is since it is based on circles.

Normally when I go through a design process I like to come up with a minimum of 3 options to choose from so I think the idea of having 3 images on the left page and then maybe 3 coloumns on the right page which could talk about the images and explain what they are and then above the text I could place the big subheading to give a basic description of what the page is about.

I think these two are the most basic of the ones that I have created so far and therefore I do not know if they would be very good or not but I am going to keep looking back at my front cover and contents page design to make sure they are looking similar. I do not really like this thumbnail but I am going to give it a try anyway.

This is a further advancement on the previous thumbnail and I think that the subheading at the top and then the white lines that I have used on the front cover and contents page, I think this is possibly one of the best ones so far and I am going to give them a closer look in the development process.

I think that this is a good layout to use and I think I have allowed myself enough room to show what modernism is since it is hard to explain and I think the images from that era would help explain what it is more than what I can myself so I think this could be a good one to use.

I am not so sure with this layout because of the gutter in the middle I think I might need to go back and look at the leading of the letters and maybe make it so there is a bigger gap inbetween the “e” and “r” also I want to maybe put “What is Modernism?” instead of just modernism to help explain what the page is about.

I think this layout could work but my only problem with it is the fact that the text “Modernism” should be the other way round on the top one, I think I have left myself enough room to explain what modernism is but I think I might have to include more than one image on this page i might do a montage or compilation or different images from the Modernism Era to help me explain what it is.

For my first layout I didn’t really want to make much difference to it other than add the grey color to it, other than that I think it is done and I think it is suitable for me to use in my final magazine.

This is my second layout that I am going to use for my definition pages for Modernism and Post Modernism which I think are more that suitable for their purpose that I need them. I am going to change the layout of the text so it is like the first and third layouts and make the image on the left page the size of the page and I think I will be happy with it.

For the third layout the only thing that I want to change is the images on the left and their layout, I want to change the direction of the image to diagonal images and then maybe have it so it looks like they are piling up ontop of each other by using a shadow effect.

Modernism:

Modernism:

References:

Modernism was a massive creative movement that swept across the western world revolutionizing the way artists and designers looked at the world, after the industrial revolution changed the western world as we knew it people started to notice that certain tasks designs of buildings, tools and vehicles were becoming unsuitable for the new world. This is just a part of the information that I am going to be talking about in my magazine on my Modernism definition page...

As such as change was needed people started to become self-conscious and because of this they started to experiment with things that they had not looked at before such as the specific form of objects and the process and materials that were used in the creation of paintings, poems and buildings. Realism soon became a thing that most modernists were not interested in and they made use of previous methods such as reprise, incorporation, rewriting and several others.

Post-Modernism:

Post-Modernism:

References:

Post Modernism was a movement that started in the late 20th century which obviously because of the reign of Modernism people wanted to move on from the skeptical interpretations of culture, art and architecture.

This is around the time the digital era was first coming around and when the term modern started to be used with more modern designs coming around which were basically focused on perfect shapes so from what I noticed is how modern “designs normally incorporate the use of squares, circles and hexagons which have been generalized as modern shapes especially the use of hexagons in several designs from magazines to posters using their interlocking shape textures and I think this mainly came around because people was getting tired of seeing abstract experiments on form and wanted something a bit more streamline and advanced for the new technological era that we was entering.

The way that I am going to display my work in my magazine for both City In Flux and Earth Artifact is by showing my title page on the first page and then showing the name of the project and then maybe using the synopsis from the brief to tell the reader what it is about and what we was given to work with.

Once I have shown the introduction I am going to show two of my “finals which were actually experiments to test the effects and process that I was going to use on my final before I created it and then that will take up two pages and then the next page I will show my final.

For the final page I am going to show my final but because my final for City In Flux is landscape and my magazine is portrait I am going to have to have a play around with how I do it to make it right, my Earth Artifact final should be fine since I can make that into a portrait image. Then I will be explaining what I did and why I did it kind of like a mini evaluation on the other page to explain what it is.

The second design is what turned into my final design and I will not be putting the rough draft on their I do not think because of the amount of room I have so I will just be putting the final one up at the end and be explaining what inspired me to do this and maybe a few images of what inspired me as well.

This was a type that was based of circles and this will also be shown in my magazine on the first page with the first design and I will be talking about what inspired me to create it in the first place but because of space problems I don’t know how many images if any that I will be able to put on here unless I add another two pages for it...
