musi river . heritage . old/new. bridge . state library . salarjung museum. See how the speckled sky burns like a pigeon's throat, Jewelled with embers of opal and peridote. See the white river that flashes and scintillates, Curved like a tusk from the mouth of the city-gates. Hark, from the minaret, how the muezzin's call Floats like a battle-flag over the city wall.

From trellised balconies, languid and luminous Faces gleam, veiled in a splendour voluminous.

Leisurely elephants wind through the winding lanes, Swinging their silver bells hung from their silver chains. Round the high Char Minar sounds of gay cavalcades Blend with the music of cymbals and serenades. Over the city bridge Night comes majestical, Borne like a queen to a sumptuous festival.

BRIDGING THE OLD AND THE NEW| MUSI RIVER REVITALISATION

]

LOCATION : MUSI RIVER BANKS, AFZALGUNJ, OLD CITY HYDERABAD TYPE : THESIS MENTORS : Ar. NAGRAJ VASTARY - Ar. SANDEEP NAGRAJ AN ENQUIRY INTO THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF CITY OF HYDERABAD. MUSI RIVER - ONCE THE DATUM OF GROWTH FOR THE CITY OF HYDERABD NOW LIES HUMMBLED STATE OF EXTICTION. ITS RIVER BANKS HOLD THE GROUNDS FOR HYDERABAD’S HERITAGE WEALTH. ATTEMPT IS TO INSERT A CATALYST INTO THE THE PRECINCT TO RESTRUCTURE AND REESTABLISH ITS LOST GLORY.

SKETCH OF STATE CENTRAL LIBRARY DATED 21-12-2014

UNDERGRADUATE PORTOLIO 2011-15 2011-16 EARLY 1600’s HYDERABAD CITY TOOK BIRTH AS A SMALL WALLED SETTLEMENT SOUTH OF THE GOLCONDA FORT ON THE BANKS OF THE SOUTHERN BANKS OF THE RIVER MUSI.

THE NATURAL (RIVER MUSI) AND MANMADE (HUSSAIN SAGAR) WATER BODIES, THE MAIN AMONG THE INNUMERABLE NUMBER OF WATER BODIES, STRUCTURING THE CITY.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE EARLIEST INSTITUTIONS (ROYAL PALACES AND ADMINISTRATIVE INSTITUTIONS ALONG THE RIVER EDGE)

FREQUENT FLASH FLOODS AND THE MASSIVE FLOOD OF 1908 LEAD TO THE DAMMING OF THE RIVER ON THE UPSTREAM. THIS LEAD TO THE DRYING OF THE RIVER AND A MAJOR SET BACK TO ITS ECOLOGY.

DEVELOPMENT OF MOVEMENT OF SYSTEMS (ROADS) AND MODES OF TRANSPORTATION CREATING THE FIRST OF THE SHIFT IN THE DEVELOPMENT PATTERN SIGNS OF THE CITY SPREADING.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE RAILWAYS AND AIRPORT DEMONSTRATING THE DECENTRALISED MODE OF OPERATION WITH HEIRARCHY ACHIEVED IN THE SYSTEMS AND CREATION OF MULTIPLE NODES OF DEVELOPMENT. DEATH OF TRADITIONAL CORE.

?

CITY’S FAST MOVING PACE TO ESTABLISH ITSELF AS A METRO CITY HAS CAUSED IT TO NEGLECT AND FORGET ITS ORIGINS. FREQUENT COMMUNAL CLASHES IN THE OLD CITY AND THE HARSH STRUGGLE FOR THE BIFURCATION OF THE STATE HAS LEFT THE CITY IN A STATE OF OBLIVION. ALL THE ATTEMPTS TO REVIVE THE PRECINCT HAS FALLEN FLAT.

‘PHYSICAL BARRIER CREATING A NOTIONAL BARRIER OF THE OLD AND THE NEW’ HYDERABAD, A CITY STILL RISING FROM A HARSH BIFURCATION HAS A RICH HISTORY AND HERITAGE AND ON THE OTHER HAND IT IS A PROMISING METROPOLIS WITH A BOOMING IT HUB. THE CITY GREW ON THE SOUTH BANKS OF THE MUSI RIVER A TRIBUTARY OF KRISHNA RIVER. THE RIVER, ONCE THE DATUM OF GROWTH FOR THE CITY NOW APPEARS TO BE A SCAR ON ITS FACE. IT SPLITS THE CITY INTO TWO CONTRASTING PARTS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY IS TO APPROACH THESE TWO SIDES OF THE CITY FROM A VIEW POINT WHICH RECOGNIZES THE DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CULTURAL SECTIONS BASED ON SOCIAL, SPATIAL AND ALSO PHYSICAL PARAMETERS. CITY IS SEEN AS A CROSS CULTURAL LABORATORY FOR INVESTIGATING HOW TWO OR MORE CULTURES ARE OPERATED ON THE TWO SIDES OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL ENVIRONMENT BUT AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT UNDER CONDITIONS OF REBUILDING OF ITS IMAGE AS A METROPOLIS. THE DETERIORATED STATE OF THE MUSI AND THE ALARMING STATE OF ITS HERITAGE HAS LEAD TO SEVERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT A CITY’S STAND ON ITS HERITAGE AND CULTURAL WEALTH. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS THESIS WOULD BE TO UNDERSTAND THE ISSUES OF TRADITIONALISM, CONTINUITY AND CHANGING NATURE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT, IN AND BEYOND THE WALLED CITY OF HYDERABAD, VIEWED IN THIS ABOVE-MENTIONED CONTEXT. THE ATTEMPT IS MADE TO ANSWER THESE ISSUES THROUGH ARCHITECTURE AND TO ESTABLISH A FRAME WORK TO REVITALIZE THE PRECINCT. IT IS AN INQUIRY INTO THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT WITH THE EMPHASIS ON THE CHANGING NATURE OF ITS ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN FORM.

SPACE THAT IS THOUGH DEFINED BY PHYSICAL BOUNDARIES EXTENDS VISUALLY. THE RIVER IS A MEDIUM WHERE ONE LOOKS TO THE OTHER SIDE AND SEES A WHOLE NEW SERIES OF EVENTS, ENCOUNTERS AND A NEW STORY BEGINS. THE NOTION OF A DIVIDED CITY CREATES PROBLEMS IN ITS PATH OF DEVELOPMENT. THE CREATION OF A BOND BETWEEN THE OLD AND THE NEW TO CELEBRATE OUR HISTORY AND TO LOOK AHEAD TO A BRIGHT AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.

PROGRAM

- CONNECTING POINT A AND B WITH SOCIAL INTERACTIVE SPACES. - ALTERNATIVE NETWORK OR PEDESTRIAN MOBILITY - SOCIAL INTERACTIVE SPACES ALONG PEDESTRIAN NETWORK - CONNECTING THE FABRIC OF THE CITY ACROSS THE RIVER BANKS TO SUPPRESS THE EXISTING CULTURAL DIVIDE. - TAKING MUSI RIVER REVITALISATION PROJECT AS EXISTING SCENARIO. - REDISTRIBUTION OF DENSITY AND ACTIVITY

THE ATTEMPT IS TO REALIZE THESE POTENTIALS AND ESTABLISH IT AS A CROSS CULTURAL HUB, BY CREATING A PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE THAT CONNECTS THE BANKS OF THE RIVER MUSI. THE BRIDGE WILL BE A LINK BETWEEN THE MUSEUM AND THE STATE LIBRARY.

ARCHITECTURAL SCALE - DEVELOPING AN INTERVENTION THAT CAN ACCOMODATE UNIVERSAL FUNCTIONALITY. - PROPOSING A NEW TYPOLOGY OF A HABITABLE BRIDGE. - PROPOSING A STRUCTURE THAT CAN EVOLVE AND GROW OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. - RESHAPING THE LANDSCAPE TO ACHIEVE QUALITY SPACES.

ISSUES THE LOSS OF TRADITIONAL CORE TO NEWER DEVELOPMENT CORE LIKE THE HUSSAIN SAGAR LAkE AND THE HI-TECH CITY DECENTRALISED FORM OF DEVELOPMENT LEADING TO NEGLECT THE OLD CITY. URBANISATION OF THE CITY IS HAVING HARSH REPERCUSSIONS ON THE ENVIRONMENT. ILLEGAL ENCROACHMENT, DAMMING AND SEWAGE DISPOSAL ARE SOME OF THE IMMEDIATE HINDRANCES. INCREASING POPULATION AND GROWING NUMBER OF MIGRANTS TO THE CITY LEADING TO HIGH PRESSURE ON THE INFRASTRUCTURE ESPECIALLY THE WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION SERVICES - MUSI RECEIVES HUGE AMOUNTS OF DOMESTIC AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE EVERYDAY LACK OF PUBLIC INTERACTION SPACE ON THE RIVER EDGE.

AIM THE AIM OF THE PROJECT WOULD BE TO INTRODUCE A CATALYST IN THE PRECINCT THAT CAN BIND ALL THESE ISSUES AND GIVE A SINGULAR SOLUTION TO RESOLVE ALL THE ISSUES. SCOPE OF WORK TO WORK WITH THE IMMEDIATE PRECINCT AND THE RIVER BED . WORK WITH INFRASTRUCTURE TO ALLOW BETTER ACCESSIBILITY AND CONNECTIONS WITHIN THE PRECINCT TO COME UP WITH EXCITING ENCOUNTERS AND NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE RIVER .

QUESTIONS TO BE ASKED 1. HOW TO ESTABLISH A NEW CONNECTION IN THE PRECINCT TO LINK THE EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE? 2. HOW TO ADDRESS THE EXISTING INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGS? 3. HOW TO MAKE A PUBLIC BUILDING OR A BUILDING FOR THE PUBLIC? 4. HOW TO RE-LOOK AT THE TYPOLOGY OF THE BRIDGE? 5. HOW TO REUSE THE EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE?

OBJECTIVE PURANAPUL

PROJECTIONS ON THE FACADE OF THE BRIDGE FOR PUBLIC AWARENESS IN ART, SOCIAL ISSUES AND ENTERTAINMENT

WITH THIS THESIS I WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILTIY OF A NEW KIND OF A BRIDGE WHICH ADDRESSES THE ISSUE OF PEDESTRIAN MOBILITY AND CONNECTS THE URBAN FABRIC ON EITHER SIDE OF THE RIVER, ITS IMPACT ON URBAN FABRIC ON EITHER SIDE OF THE RIVER AND ITS IMPACT ON URBAN SETTINGS IN TERMS OF SOCIOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL IMPLICATIONS. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THIS, I NEED TO EVALUATE THE PROJECT IN TERMS OFMATERIALS TWO CRITERIA: - THE BRIDGE • AS A SUBJECT - THE BRIDGE AS AN OBJECT • STEEL

THE EVOLUTION OF THE ARCHED ENTRANCE PAVILLION STARTED BY DRAWING THE INSPIRATION FROM THE RAJASTHANI “JHAROKAS” AND THE WESTERN ARCHITYPICAL ARCADES. THE DESIGN EVOLVED BY DECODING AND DECONSTRUCTING THE ELEMENTS BY UNDERSTANDING ITS SPATIAL AND AESTHETIC CHARACTER. HENCE DERIVING A CONTEMPORARY BUT A ROOTED DESIGN TO THE PRECINCT.
