Welcome to the 2013 Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival!
Welcome
It’s June so that can mean only one thing, the Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival is back at the Motorpoint Arena for the sixth year in a row! The Festival started out at the STAR Centre in Splott before moving to City Hall and now we have settled in the Motorpoint, a perfect air-conditioned hall in the centre of Cardiff. The past year has been another great one for Welsh breweries with the number increasing all the time. We have also seen the more established brewers experiment more with different recipes and ingredients –it has been fun tracking down the Brains Craft Brewery beers in Cardiff pubs the past year and we have an unique selection of their craft beers on the front of the bar for you to drink this year. Celt Experience Brewery in Caerphilly have also delved into their crafty side as have Tiny Rebel and others such as Otley, Brecon and Kite. On the Foreign Bar this year we have teamed up with the Bottle Shop from Roath to bring some fantastic beers to the Festival – the Brewers & Union beers are just stunning. The Cider and Perry Bar will once again be showcasing drinks from Welsh producers and we hope to have the widest range of anywhere in Wales.
and respond to your comments straight away, time permitting. We, the Festival Organising Committee would like to say a big thank you to all that have helped us make the Festival a success, not just the brewers and cidermakers but Steve and his staff at Inspiration in Swansea, Day’s Van Rental and Daniel and Chris at Orchard Media, as well as to Phil, Alex and all the staff at Motorpoint Arena. Please remember that all staff here at the Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival are volunteers and we have given up our free time to run this festival for your enjoyment. If you would like to join us then please pop over to the CAMRA Membership stand to sign up! If you enjoyed this Festival, don’t forget that CAMRA is also running the first Pembrokeshire Beer Festival 27th-29th June in Milford Haven! Finally, this year the festival charity is Ty Hafan, please be generous with any unused beer tokens and donate them to this worthy cause. Iechyd da! James ‘Arfur’ Daley Festival Organiser
We hope you enjoy the festival and don't forget to tweet about it using #GWBCF, I'll be tweeting about the festival myself from my personal account of @ArfurD and other staff members will be using the @GWBCF account, so we will try The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2013 03

Foriegn Beer This year we have teamed up with Dan & Rob from the Bottle Shop in Roath to bring you a selection of German beers. Glasses The glass is yours to keep as a souvenir of the event. Look after it as if you drop it you will have to purchase a replacement. Due to the policy of the Welsh Government there are no glass refunds this year. Smoking Due to the Nanny State we live in, smoking is prohibited inside the arena, however we have initiated a smoking solution from the foyer where a pass-out system allows you to leave the building and return to the festival. You are allowed to use electronic cigarettes or e-cigs in the arena. Toilets Toilets can be found either side of the arena.

Changes to the list will be published on the bars, on the membership stands and on the Festival website. Not all the beers will be on at once, some may not be ready to serve, others may have run out. Our knowledgeable bar staff should be able to help you out if your first choice is not available. The beers are arranged, alphabetically by brewery with A-L on the bar on the far side of the hall as

nce again at the Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival we aim to bring you the best real ciders and perries that are available. As well as our own fantastic producers from Wales we are featuring ciders from as far away as Lancashire and even Scotland as well as old favourites from Somerset and Herefordshire. Some of our producers are very small, producing only a few hundred gallons a year, others started small and are now large makers but the same amount of care and consideration is shown in making the large amounts as is in the small amounts. We should have ciders to everyone's taste and palette here; from sweet to extra dry but remember one makers medium could be another makers sweet so at the Festival we will be using a scoring system marked on the labels with 1 for extra sweet and 12 for extra dry. Don't forget to try our perries as well, made from pears in the same way cider is made from apples. Perry pear trees take a long time to grow and can live for hundreds of years, also the flavours are a lot more subtle than you would find in cide

Saturday 9th June 7.30pm Here Be Dragons Wild Celtic Music from Wales. Their live shows have had crowds dancing and partying in festivals and venues across Europe and in the USA. Here be Dragons stay true to their heritage whilst bringing Celtic roots into the 21st century. Using acoustic intruments such as banjos and mandolins alongside drums and fiddles they bring a rock style to the traditional Welsh folk scene. They sing in both English and Welsh and play original songs alongside traditional ones such as Sosban Fach. They have released three CDs, “Alcohol & Rain”, “Celtic Bonding” and “Bright New Tomorrow”.
Treharris Male Voice Choir, is made up of purely amateur singers from all walks of life. They are united in their love of singing and giving pleasure to others. The choir was formed in 1961 in what was a strong mining community. During the 50+ years since its formation, the choir has travelled extensively throughout the UK and Europe, extending its reputation for both professionalism and entertainment. At the heart of the choir are the accomplished musical team, Llinos and Anna. Through their good endeavour and expertise the choir's repertoire is both extensive and varied. This includes; Welsh and English traditional, modern, Negro spiritualist, songs from the shows, etc. etc. It is hoped the selection provides ‘something for everyone to enjoy’. The choir is a charitable organisation and regularly raises monies through their concerts for many local and foreign causes.

The best pubs in Central Cardiff Pubs in Cardiff
As well as visiting the beer festival, there are also some brilliant pubs to visit in the City Centre. No journey to Cardiff is complete without a visit to the 2012 Cardiff CAMRA Pub of the Year, the City Arms on Quay Street. This old pub was reinvented as a speciality ale house by owners SA Brain in late 2010 and has established itself as the premier beer pub of the City. As well as beers from Brains, the City Arms serves beer from other Welsh breweries as well as brews from further afield. American and German beer festivals have been held along with a cider festival and there is always a wide choice of beer available, on handpump or straight from the barrel.
Fire Island Interior
Next door to Zerodegrees, the tiled Queens Vaults now features beers from Tiny Rebel brewery on as well as the best selection of draught cider in the City Centre. Good value meals served throughout the day as well.
City Arms, Cardiff bar area
Opposite the City Arms, the former Glamorgan Councils Staff Club has been given a new lease on life and has reopened as Fire Island. A regular outlet for Tiny Rebel and Celt Experience beers, Fire Island is a must-visit pub in what is becoming the ‘Craft-beer quarter’ of Cardiff! A short distance away, on Westgate Street, is the state-of-the-art Zerodegrees microbrewery, housed in a former garage, built in the art-deco style. A range of regular beers, including Pale Ale, Black Lager, Pilsner are matched with monthly specials such as an Elderflower Beer and the stunning Oktoberfest Lager available at the same time as the small beer festival held in Munich in September. Pizzas are also available at this pub. 22 The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2013
Towards the castle, at the top end of High Street, is the Goat Major, which serves Brains beers and guest ales. Amid the gleaming brasswork and tiles the menu is worth perusing as this pub specialises in pies and has even won ‘Pie of the Year’ for their creations. As well as the fixed menu, chalkboards announce the weekly special pie which could be anything, from venison to cheese. Nearby on Duke Street, opposite the South-East end of the castle wall is the timber-fronted Rummer Tavern which opens out to a cavernous interior. The Rummer is a rare local outlet for Wye Valley HPA and features regularlychanging guest beers and a cider on handpump.
Pubs in Cardiff Just around the corner, in the shadow of the spire of St John’s Church is the Owain Glyndwr, a pub that has been renamed more times than almost any other Cardiff pub and was once the brewery tap for the long-defunct Nell’s Brewery. Previous names include the Tennis Courts, the Buccaneer, the Mably Arms and the Kemys-Tynte Arms. Today this busy pub is a rare local outlet for beers from the Vale of Glamorgan Brewery. Nearby in Church Street is the famous
At the lower end of the Hayes is the
Duke of
Wellington, an imposing red-brick building built in 1892 and named in honour of the Duke to commemorate his death 50 years earlier. This Brains serves guest beers and opens early if anyone wants a coffee. The Cottage
Old
Arcade which features in the CAMRA book ‘Real Heritage Pubs of Wales’ and the Brains beers are always in top form in this early Victorian pub.
The Cottage on St Mary Street is worth popping in for the range of Brains beers available, although be warned, the Brains Craft Brewery beers do tend to sell out very quickly!

A real family brewery... Tudor Brewery was purchased in March 2011 by Stephen Devine after seeing the potential it offered. The brewery had fallen into disrepair and ceased trading in 2009, so Stephen set about creating a suitable environment to begin trading once again. This was completed by May 2011 when Stephen was told he had lung cancer. Unfortunately, he lost his fight against the disease in June 2011. His wife, Gaenor, and their children decided that they wanted to continue Stephen’s dream of creating a microbrewery that reflected the spirit of the South Wales valleys.
Unit One, Llanhilleth Industrial Estate, Llanhilleth, Nr. Abertillery, NP13 2RX
As siblings, the Devine children are an extremely close knit group and they all pulled together to help their mother carry the brewery forward.
26 The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2013
The first brew hit the market in July 2011 and since this time has gone from strength to strength. All the beers produced are named after landmarks in the area, hence Blorenge, Skirrid, Sugarloaf and Black Mountain. The latest creation is named after the road from Abergavenny to Blaenau Gwent and called Black Rock. This reflects the Devine family’s business aim to grow their company and bring work opportunities into a county that three of the four children now live. Tudor Brewery was one of only THREE breweries in Wales to obtain the highest accolade of three gold stars at The Great Taste Awards 2012 for their pale ale. Classed as the Oscars of the culinary world, all at Tudor are honoured and extremely pleased at this affirmation of quality
