Welcome to the 2012 Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival!

Welcome

After the sell-out success of last year, we have decided to make this year the biggest and best yet with more real ales and ciders than ever before. We have increased the amount of each beer we order as well so we will be able to keep up the range of everyone’s favourites. Over the past year we have seen some momentous changes to the brewing scene in Wales – all of them for the better. First off last year's Champion Beer of Wales winner Rhymney Brewery moved to a purpose-built visitor centre and brewery in Blaenavon, close to the National Museum at Big Pit, we wish them all the success at this new place and don't forget to visit them there. Next, Wales’ biggest real ale brewers SA Brain have installed a ‘craft brewery’ in their existing Victorian tower brewery, allowing them to do short runs of beers utilising different ingredients such as unusual hop varieties. We are very pleased to see these new beers on the bar alongside their old favourites such as SA. Celt Experience and Otley breweries have both expanded into larger premises and Tomas Watkin brewery purchased a brand-new state-of-the-art bottling line. Meanwhile in Newport, new kids on the block Tiny Rebel are taking the Welsh brewing industry by storm with their innovative new beers, definitely a favourite for all hop-heads out there. We now have around 45 breweries in Wales, more than we have had for almost a century, we have not been able to bring them all to this festival, as much as we would have liked to, but our bars team and wholesalers have tried to bring as

many as are possible. We also have a selection of beers from Yorkshire this year with some awardwinning brews that are not usually seen in Wales. Then there is our cider and perry, the best range in the whole of Wales with makers from across the UK represented. The foreign bar this year features beers from the Budvar Brewery of the Czech Republic, with a very rare outing for their ‘Yeast’ beer, the unpasteurised version of their Original lager. We hope you enjoy the festival and don’t forget to tweet about it using #GWBCF, I’ll be tweeting about the festival myself from my personal account of @ArfurD and other staff members will be using the @GWBCF account, so we will try and respond to your comments straight away, time permitting. Please remember that all staff here at the Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival are volunteers and we have given up our free time to run this festival for your enjoyment. Finally, this year the festival charity is a local, Cardiff-based one, Woodlands High School, which specialises in teaching children with learning difficulties. We hope you will donate any unused beer tokens to this worthy charity. Iechyd da! CF Organiser James ‘Arfur’ Daley Festival Organiser The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2012 03

Information about the festival BEER TOKENS No cash is accepted over the bars, payment is by tokens only which are available next to the membership stand, situated on your right as you come into the arena. Please note we have changed the tokens this year, please do not rip them, they will be marked off by bar staff. Unused tokens may be donated to our festival charity which this year is Woodlands Action Support Group which raises money for Woodlands High School in Cardiff. BEER LIST The list of draught beers can be found later on in the programme. Any changes will be available on lists on the bars and the membership stands. CIDER AND PERRY Our huge range of ciders and perries have a bar of their own, on the far side of the hall as you come in. FOREIGN BEER This year, for the first time we have a range of beers from the Budvar Brewery in the Czech Republic. GLASSES The glass is yours to keep as a souvenir of the event. Look after it as if you drop it you will have to purchase a replacement. Due to the policy of the Welsh Government there are no glass refunds this year. SMOKING Due to the Nanny State we live in, smoking is prohibited inside the arena, however we have initiated a smoking solution from the foyer where a pass-out system allows you to leave the building and return to the festival. TOILETS Toilets can be found either side of the arena.

FOOD The food is supplied by the Motorpoint Arena and both hot and cold choices will be available. The food is locally sourced wherever possible and Welsh cheeses will be an additional feature on the menu this year. We also have ‘Olives and Things’, Merry Berry Chocolates as well as Martin’s Jerked Meats to go with the finest of ales and ciders. COMPETITIONS The Champion Beer of Wales competition will occur during the festival along with a CAMRA Champion Cider competition. The winners of both will be announced at 3pm from the stage on Friday. GOOD BEER GUIDE 2012 The beer drinkers' bible will be on sale from the products stand, together with other books and products such as T-shirts and the odd teddy bar. The products stand is located next door to the: CAMRA MEMBERSHIP STAND: 140,000 members can't be wrong! Why not join up and help CAMRA save the pub and promote real ales? TOMBOLA Do you want an extra bit of beery history to take home from the festival? Well head along to see Eric & Julie at the tombola stand to see what fantastic prizes you could win.

The Beer List The following is a list of the beers which we hope to have on sale during the festival. Since going to press there may be a few changes to the beer list due to flooding, anthropomorphic global warming, war, famine and/or religious holidays. Changes to the list will be published on the bars and on the membership stands. Not all the beers will be on at once, some may not be ready to serve, others may have run out. ORIGINAL 5% Brewed in a 100 day cycle (90 spent in secondary fermentation) from a source of natural spring water, Moravian barley malt, whole hops and a strain of yeast resident at the brewery since 1895 Budvar Original is deservedly regarded as one of the world’s great lager conditioned beers. DARK 4.7% Budvar Dark has been designed to familiarise the beer lover with how all Bohemian and Bavarian lagers tasted before mass produced pale malt made golden lager commercially possible in the mid nineteenth century. This is because it has been designed to come as close as possible to how all Bohemian and Bavarian lagers tasted before bottom fermented golden lager stole the show in the mid nineteenth century.

last stage of the brewing process, Budvar Yeast is a brew of almost other worldly freshness and purity.

Now, thanks to Budweiser Budvar, the Darkside is moving centre stage again. Enjoying the same brewing cycle as Original, Dark gets its delicious roasted flavour from being brewed from three types of malt; Munich, caramel and roasted. YEAST 5% Budvar Yeast Beer is the unpasteurised version of Budvar Original, encapsulating all the same taste cues and as fresh as if it were being drunk at the brewery tap. It’s brewed with the same care and patience as ORIGINAL, has the same ABV of 5% and uses the same ingredients in a 100 day brewing cycle. The big difference is that being unpasteurised with extra yeast cells being added by hand at the The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2012 15

Festival Charity

A bit about our chosen festival charity this year Woodlands School caters for 130 pupils between the ages of 11 to 19 years, all of whom experience special educational needs of an academic and/or social nature. The spectrum of needs is wide, ranging from pupils who experience moderate learning difficulties to those who experience severe and complex learning difficulties which are frequently combined with, and compounded by, a combination of complex specific, physical, social and/or behavioural needs.

16 The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2012

Woodlands School is situated on the outskirts of the city of Cardiff, South Wales in the area of Ely, a socio-economically disadvantaged area, in which has developed one of the largest council housing estates in Europe. A percentage of the pupils who attend Woodlands School live in the area of Ely. The remaining pupils are transported to the school daily from other, often equally disadvantaged, areas of the city.

Cider-tastic!

O

Cider and Perry nce again at the Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival we aim to bring you the best real ciders and perries that are available. As well as our own fantastic producers from Wales we are featuring ciders from as far away as Lancashire and even Scotland as well as old favourites from Somerset and Herefordshire. Some of our producers are very small, producing only a few hundred gallons a year, others started small and are now large makers but the same amount of care and consideration is shown in making the large amounts as is in the small amounts. We should have ciders to everyone's taste and palette here; from sweet to extra dry but remember one makers medium could be another makers sweet so at the Festival we will be using a scoring system marked on the labels with 1 for extra sweet and 12 for extra dry. Don't forget to try our perries as well, made from pears in the same way cider is made from apples. Perry pear trees take a long time to grow and can live for hundreds of years, also the flavours are a lot more subtle than you would find in cider.

The best pubs in Central Cardiff Pubs in Cardiff

A

s well as visiting the beer festival, there are also some brilliant pubs to visit in the City Centre. No journey to Cardiff is complete without a visit to the current Cardiff CAMRA Pub of the Year, the City Arms on Quay Street. This old pub was reinvented as a speciality ale house

by owners SA Brain in late 2010 and has established itself as the premier beer pub of the City. As well as beers from Brains, the City Arms serves beer from other Welsh breweries as well as brews from further afield. American and German beer festivals have been held along with a cider festival and there is always a wide choice of beer available, on handpump or straight from the barrel. The pub is also a rare outlet for Budvar Dark and there is an excellent selection of bottled beers from around the world. ‘Meet the Brewer’ nights, featuring Welsh brewers have also been a feature since the reopening. A short distance away, on Westgate Street, is the state-of-the-art Zerodegrees microbrewery, housed in a former garage, built in the art-deco style. A range of regular beers, including Pale Ale, Black Lager, Pilsner are matched with monthly specials such as an Elderflower Beer and the stunning Oktoberfest Lager available at the same time as the small beer festival held in Munich in September. Pizzas are also available at this pub.

Towards the castle, at the top end of High Street, is the Goat Major, which serves Brains beers and guest ales. Amid the gleaming brasswork and tiles the menu is worth perusing as this pub specialises in pies and has even won ‘Pie of the Year’ for their creations. As well as the fixed menu, chalkboards announce the weekly special pie which could be anything, from venison to cheese. Nearby on Duke Street, opposite the South-East end of the castle wall is the timberfronted Rummer

Tavern which opens out to a cavernous interior. The Rummer is a rare local outlet for Wye Valley HPA and features regularly-changing guest beers and a cider on handpump. Just around the corner, in the shadow of the spire of St John’s Church is the Owain Glyndwr, a pub that has been renamed more times than almost any other Cardiff pub and was once the brewery tap for the long-defunct Nell’s Brewery. Previous names include the Tennis Courts, the Buccaneer, the Mably Arms and the Kemys-Tynte Arms. Today this busy pub is a rare local outlet for beers from the Vale of Glamorgan Brewery. Nearby in Church Street is the famous

Old

Arcade which features in the CAMRA book ‘Real 20 The Great Welsh Beer and Cider Festival 2012

Pubs in Cardiff Heritage Pubs of Wales’ and the Brains beers are always in top form in this early Victorian pub. At the lower end of the Hayes is the Duke of

Wellington, an imposing red-brick building built in 1892 and named in honour of the Duke to commemorate his death 50 years earlier. This Brains serves guest beers and opens early if anyone wants a coffee. Finally a mention has to be made of everyone’s favourite Cardiff boozer the Vulcan, the pub is now shut but luckily it has been saved for the nation and will be rebuilt at the National Museum in St Fagans. A long campaign has been fought to save this pub which dates back to 1853 and although many of us would have liked to see it remain where it was, this was the only realistic option in the end.

Real Heritage Pubs of Wales is a guide to a remarkable and varied collection of pubs with the best and most interesting interiors in the whole of Wales. It is CAMRA’s pioneering initiative to bring greater appreciation of the most valuable historic pub interiors in the country to both local people and visitors. Although Wales has over 4,000 public houses, this guide lists just 100 or so. There are so few because of the enormous amount of opening out, theming and general modernisation that has taken place in recent decades. Safeguarding what is now left of the country’s pub heritage has become a serious conservation challenge. By publishing this guide, CAMRA aims to encourage owners and local authorities to take steps to ensure that these surviving gems remain genuine historic pubs for years to come.
