We are the second oldest CAMRA festival, and we can’t believe that this is our 40th one. CAMRA is the Campaign for Real Ale, which exists to protect and promote traditional British beers and ciders. Festivals are a good way of showing the wonderful variety, from strawcoloured refreshing bitters to rich dark stouts. CAMRA is also concerned about the closure of so many pubs. You can join CAMRA here at our CAMRA shop. The benefits of joining include free entry to most festivals, plus discounts at many pubs. There is also a membership form at the back of this programme. Our first Kent Beer Festival was on Saturday June 21st 1975 in a marquee in Dane John Gardens, Canterbury.

First Kent Beer Festival 1975 I was the festival organiser (I still am), and I took a van around the country to collect my favourite beers. I got Hoskins (Leicester), Yorkshire Clubs, Belhaven (Dunbar), Jennings (Cockermouth), Hydes and Boddingtons (both from Manchester) and Morlands (Abingdon). We also had Brakspears, Eldridge Pope, Fullers, Harveys, King & Barnes, Ridleys, Ruddles and Youngs. Our Kent beers were from the only two breweries in Kent, Shepherd Neame and Whitbread Fremlins. Our only cider was from Bob Luck’s at Benenden. We sold about 600 tickets at 50p each. The beers sold out early, and the festival made a profit of £43.51. I think we charged about 15p per pint.

First Kent Beer Festival 1975. Note that the beer is on railway sleepers. We had to do a lot of bending down but we were younger then.

We started doing souvenir glasses in 1976. This is the first pint glass with its green logo - have you got one? Of the nine Kent Beer Festivals in Dane John, the most memorable for the staff was the one when the marquee turned up a day late. We had to put up the beer outdoors, and guard it overnight. Passers-by couldn’t believe their eyes.

Right: The marquee goes up over the beer. Note the wooden casks. continued overleaf 40th Kent Beer Festival 3

4 40th Kent Beer Festival

History of the Kent Beer Festival - continued have been associated with the festival since its earliest days.

Girlie Bar

Gill with some of our great helpers, all now sadly deceased: Dave Hodgkins, Alex Steltner, Terry Whitta

The festival was in Dane John until 1983. It seemed a good idea to move when the offices in Dane John became residential flats. We were at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Canterbury for two years, then at the Woodville Hall in Gravesend in 1986. The Woodville Halls are a good venue, but we realised that our festival needs a more outdoor location. It is essentially a summer festival. Our licensee, Derry Williams of the Three Horseshoes, Lower Hardres, suggested the barn at Merton Farm, and we’ve been there since 1987. In the early days, we used only half the barn: note the wall of hay in this photo and the invading pig.

We also introduced the popular free bus service. In the cutting opposite from the Kentish Gazette, the tall bearded chap in the white shirt is our late licensee, Derry, who died in 1998 and is sorely missed. The photo also shows three members of the Mendham family: Kae, Mick and Frank, who

One innovation that attracted a lot of attention was the Pink Girlie Bar, a tongue-in-the-cheek name for a bar that encouraged women who didn’t normally drink beer to give it a go. It worked. We celebrated our

25th anniversary in 1999. By then there were 10 breweries in Kent. We asked them to produce a special anniversary beer with a silver theme, and they all came up trumps. The photo shows the Lord Mayor with me and our press officer, Mary Galliers, and the Shepherd Neame silver beer, Argentum Canticorum. Well, we are still going strong. There are now nearly 30 breweries in Kent so we are hard-pushed to find room for them all on the Kent Bar. There has also been a big increase in cider producers, so for the last few years all our ciders have been Kentish ones. This is my last year as organiser – it’s time after 40 years to hand over the job to Andy Mitchell. It’s been great fun, and I’ll still be involved! 40th Kent Beer Festival 5

40th Kent Beer Festival 21

Word Search By the time the first Kent Beer Festival was held in 1975, the county was down to its last three breweries. Whitbread (Wateringbury), Whitbread Fremlins (Faversham) both of which were closed in the 1980s and more happily, still going strong, Shepherd Neame. The first of Kent’s micro-breweries was (I think) the short-lived Canterbury Brewery, which set up in 1979 appropriately enough, in the cooperage of the old Flint’s

Brewery, St. Dunstan’s Street, Canterbury. Since then, some 40 micro-breweries have been established, most of which are happily still with us and continuing the tradition of producing excellent Kentish ales. In the word search grid are the names of 40 Kent Micro-breweries, running horizontally, vertically and diagonally, backwards as well as forwards. Good Luck!
