Welcome to the 38th CAMRA Peterborough Beer Festival We once again welcome you to the annual Peterborough Beer Festival, organized and run by the Peterborough & District branch of CAMRA - The Campaign for Real Ale. We have made only a few changes to our layout this year. The ‘walk around layout’ remains in place. The Cider Bar has been moved to the North marquee, and the Wine Bar is in the place where the cider bar was at the end of the ‘tunnel of love’. We have a new brewery bar with Brains Brewery making a first appearance at PBF. Our LocAle Bar features most of the local brewers within our branch area and a few on the fringes. The Sponsors Bar has attracted even more support this year thanks to the efforts of our sponsors team. The popular ‘singles bar’ is still here on Bar 1.

Another campaign that CAMRA have got involved in to protect pubs is the new legislation with the provision of the Localism Act and Assets of Community Value. From April of this year pubs that are listed as ACV’s will require planning permission to be demolished or changed to any other use. The local Peterborough branch has already successfully secured an ACV for the Hand and Heart, Millfield.

Another step we have introduced in response to demand is the third of a pint measure on our glasses. We have also decided to return to the policy of allowing ‘tasters’ but, in a limited manner. A taster will only be a small splash of beer/cider in the glass. Anyone who wishes to bring their own glass to the festival may do so, but we will only serve the contents in it using our own measured glasses. We do not allow drinks of any nature to be brought into the festival except one small sealed bottle of water.

CAMRA membership now stands at over 173,000. We have a dedicated team locally who strive to encourage active new members in the branch. In recent years we have had some new faces come forward to take on roles within the committee. We would like to see more come aboard! We encourage any members who wish to be part of our team helping to run our social events, organise and run this festival, and support and monitor our pubs and local brewers.

We have managed to keep our price rises to a minimum again this year, in spite of continually rising costs. Beer prices have again, in some small way, thanks to the government’s recognition of the plight of our hard pressed publicans, remained fairly stable over the last year. We have taken this factor into account by managing to limit our beer price rises to a very few.

We hope your visit to this year’s festival is an enjoyable one. Please remember we are a very big ‘pub’ so are governed by the same laws as your local. The Staff are all unpaid volunteers, so please bear that in mind during the busy times. If you would like to become part of this ‘family’ then go along to the membership stand. The benefits far out-way the cost. Cheers

CAMRA continues to campaign to stop the closure and destruction of our pubs. We were encouraged by the government’s introduction of their Enterprise and Employment Bill, which had an Peterborough Beer Festival 2015

amendment at the Report Stage for Small Business, to allow tied tenants of companies with more than 500 pubs to have their rent reviewed independently. It would also give tenants the option of being able to buy beer at competitive prices in the open market. CAMRA had over 8,000 members who lobbied their MP’s to help make this happen.

Peterborough Beer Festival 2015

Have Fun at the

Festival We all hope that your visit to the Beer Festival this year will be a memorable one. Remember without your support the festival could not take place, and the chance to sample some of the excellent brews on offer would be lost. Please try and imagine the festival marquees as one giant pub. Of course, as with all pubs, there are certain rules we have to comply with.

The times of opening are published in the programme and the marquees are completely non-smoking. Accompanied children are allowed in the bar marquees, but please keep them away from the bar serveries. And remember that it is against the law to drink alcohol on site if you are under 18.

You will need to buy a glass before you start. If it gets too sticky or you want to change glass sizes just take it back to the glasses counter and, provided it is undamaged, exchange it.

The Beer Festival serves all beer, cider and wine in oversized glasses with governmentstamped, line-measured markings to ensure that you, the customer, get a full measure in your glass. Please be careful if you put your glass down on a table, on the grass, or anywhere that it could be knocked over and broken. If such an event does occur please inform a member of staff or security that there is broken glass. On no account attempt to pick up the pieces yourself. We have staff with the proper equipment to retrieve it safely. Do not grind it into the grass! Other events take place on this site after we have finished. Be careful not to leave your glass unattended. Remember – You paid for it! Peterborough Beer Festival 2015

To ensure you enjoy the festival at all times we advise you to start off with some light beers, say a mild or low gravity ale, then on to something a bit stronger. Starting off with the strongest beers on the menu means your taste buds get no chance to enjoy the different flavours that the various brews offer. As with any other pub we do have the right to eject any person who we feel is a threat to other customers or our staff. Thankfully this is a very rare occurrence. Also remember that, just like other pubs, you are not allowed to drink your own alcohol on site and illegal drugs are totally banned and their use will result in a call to the police.

Finally let me remind you of the dedicated staff who are serving you at the festival. Every one of them is an unpaid volunteer, so please be patient at busy times. The person serving you may well have been on duty for the best part of the day, or the whole week, and are naturally starting to flag a bit! You can help these people by joining CAMRA and offering to help run the festival. Cheers! Enjoy the Festival

Not everybody, when they reach a certain age, is resigned to pottering around on an allotment. United in the belief that the world deserves something better than Justin Bieber, Grumpy Old Men burst on the scene, (well they started anyway), ten years ago. They play a range of pop and rock from the sixties to the present day; from The Who to Snow Patrol. They may not get quite the number of crowd surfers and screaming groupies that young Justin does but that suits them fine. “We don’t want to peak too soon”, they say, “Plenty of time for that when we’re a bit older.” www.grumpyoldmen-band.com

The

Beer List The Singles Bar 2015

We started the Singles bar a couple of years ago with the idea of having several one-off beers that the brewer had made as an experiment or something really strong that is only made in small batches, or some long forgotten recipe that they may have come across while having a bit of a tidy-up. But, anyway the beers we had were very popular and the Singles bar quickly sold out. This year there should be about 40 different beers on the Singles bar, ranging from weird to wonderful, and sublime to ridiculous. You will be able to try anything from a 6.5% espresso stout to a raspberry headcracker from Wood-

This year will see the introduction of our very first designated “LocAle” bar. This is wonderful news to me, as we now have at least fifteen Microbreweries within our branch area. This may actually increase as I am writing this! Twenty years ago when I first moved into the area, I believe there were only two.

The “LocAle” bar will be situated on Bar 4, which is in Marquee B, the north Marquee opposite the games and Tombola stall and directly next to the sponsors bar. Make sure you visit us to sample some of what our branch area brewers have to offer. You will not be disappointed, we can guarantee that, and don't forget Peterborough Beer Festival 2015

Don't forget that a number of our local real ale establishments stock locally brewed ale & cider on a regular basis. This LocAle scheme is a major promotion within CAMRA and we at the Peterborough branch have introduced a “LocAle pub of the year” competition, which should be awarded in January 2016. This has been embraced keenly by several of our local pubs. It’s not too late for licencees that don’t currently run with local beers, or all ale lovers, to support the scheme. See you there. Cooper

We are fortunate once again to have a visit from T & R Theakston’s master cooper, Jonathan Manby on Tuesday 25th August. T & R Theakston are one of the few British brewers who still employ a full-time cooper. Although their beers are no longer delivered in oak casks some of their beers are matured in the wood. Jonathan was trained by master brewer and cooper, Clive Hollis, and is one of the few remaining coopers in the country.

Everyone who has watched Jonathan’s demonstration of his craft has enjoyed watching him create casks with tools that haven’t changed in centuries. If you didn’t catch it last year, then make sure that you do not miss the chance to observe and marvel at his skill in the north tent.

Escape Bar 2015

Peterborough Beer Festival 2015

Bottles Bar

Welcome to the Foreign Beer Bar at Peterborough Beer Festival. This year we have added 4 new countries to our range of beers, Denmark, Italy, Japan and Scotland.

We have all the Trappist Breweries represented except Westvleteren, but we do have St Bernardus which uses the original receipts from when they brewed under licence for Westvleteren.

There is the return of a couple of old favourites Slag and Cookie Beer, but they are in limited supply, so if you want a Slag or just a beer that tastes like biscuits then come early.

Some new beers to look out for are Mikkeller Brewery: American Dream & Green Gold from Denmark, De Kazematten Brewery: The Wipers Times 14, appropriate in consideration of the centenary of the beginning of the Great War, from Belgium, Day of the Dead Brewery: Amber Ale, Porter & IPA from New Zealand and finally from our friends over the pond, the USA we have the O’so Brewing Co: Hopdinger, Hopwhoopin, Night Train & Rusty Red.

On draught we are offering La Trappe Blond from Tuesday to Thursday and Schneider Weisse Blonde on Friday & Saturday, as well as Strawberry and Raspberry fruit beers. With 151 beers to chose from we are sure that you will find something to suit your palate and our specialist and friendly staff will be happy to guide you through your experience. We look forward to seeing you and hope you enjoy the Beer Festival and leave with good memories. Peter Josling Foreign Beer Bar Organiser 50

Peterborough Beer Festival 2015

Welcome to the cider and perry bar. All the ciders and perries sold here are ‘real’ in the sense that they consist principally of fermented apple and fermented pear juice respectively. Most of the ciders and perries here are, as previously, 100% apple / pear juice, but changes to CAMRA’s definition of Real Cider, passed at the recent CAMRA AGM at Nottingham allow for some natural fruit and other flavourings.

You will therefore find on the bar strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant and other fruit ciders, also elderflower and ginger. We hope you like them, and your feedback will be appreciated. None of the ciders / perries are artificially carbonated or served under gas pressure. This means that the majority of the ciders are still, although some will sparkle a little due to the residual fermentation in the tubs. Because of the nature of the fermentation process real ciders and perries may be crystal clear, hazy or even cloudy, but not so opaque as to make them look unappealing in the glass. Local, small-scale cider-making is on the rise in many parts of the country, a trend which is to be encouraged, and we have a good range of locally sourced ciders at the festival.

Small-scale cider-making received a terrific boost recently. There has always been an exemption from paying duty for small-scale cider-makers producing less than 7,000 litres per year; there was a move by the European Union to abolish this exemption. Fortunately, in the recent budget the Government stated that the Peterborough Beer Festival 2015

Cider & Perry Bar

exemption will remain. Hopefully this will encourage more people to try their hand at cider making. The bar staff will be very happy to give small tastes and discuss the drinks with you provided the bar is not too busy.

We are also selling a range of non-alcoholic apple juices on the bar. These are 100% juice and unlike the cider are pasteurized, simply because if they weren’t the natural yeast in the fruit would begin a fermentation into cider!

The tub labels should tell most of what you need to know when ordering. Green labels are cider and yellow labels are perry. Pyder is a drink made from a mixture of apples and pears; traditionally it appears with the perries on the bar. Most ciders/perries are made from a blend of apple/pear varieties; where a single variety has been used this is on the tub label. All the ciders and perries have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry, Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet. Admittedly this is a bit subjective but it is a useful starting point.

Sometimes there are discrepancies between the programme and the tub labels; this is inevitable since the programme has to be produced some time in advance while the tub labels are only generated once the cider has arrived and has been tasted. If this happens trust the tub labels rather than the programme. Wassail!

Design our logo for 2016 and win £200! The final design will need the words, “Peterborough Beer Festival” and “39th” and will need to include the CAMRA logo. However, if you don’t think that you can do all that then don’t worry. It is the idea that is important. We can always get an artist to create a design using your idea.

Thank you to all who sent in designs for the logo in 2015. Now it’s time to try again. We will need a logo for the 39th Peterborough Beer Festival. If you have an artistic bent – or even if you haven’t – hunt out those old pencils and have a go.

We are offering £200 for the design or idea that we use.

We are not declaring a closing date since we can’t close the competition until we have a suitable design BUT we would like to start using the logo on our website and on posters by the end of April. Send your designs with your name and address to Logo Competition, 205 High Street, Old Fletton, Peterborough, PE2 8DY or to logo@beer-fest.org.uk.

Wine List Welcome to the 2015 wine bar and our new position for this year, just inside the south marquee, so hopefully easy to find. All our wines are English and we offer a selection of some of the best White, Rose, Red and sparkling wines, not to forget the ever popular country fruit wines from Lyme Bay Winery in Devon.

For 2015 I am pleased to have sourced three new to the beer festival local Vineyards to supply our festival; Elysian Fields from Ely, Dedham Vale and Felsted Vineyards both from Essex, offering 13 new wines to try as well as 2 new for 2015 English wines from Lyme Bay, Shoreline and Bacchus. How often do you get the opportunity to try so many English wines - which in my opinion are ever improving.

As with the beers we will not have all the wines in the programme available at all times but we will aim to have a good selection. If you have any questions about the wines or are unsure what to choose please ask and we will do our best to help. Enjoy the festival and the wines.

A Guide to Assets of Community Value There is nothing inevitable about pub closures. They are probably the result of a deregulated market. Fortunately Members of Parliament of all persuasions understand that there needs to be some legal constraints and they have provided us with the Localism Act and Assets of Community Value.

From 6th April 2015 pubs that are listed as Assets of Community Value (England only) will require planning permission to be demolished or changed to any other use. In effect existing permitted development rights will be removed for pubs listed as ACVs for as long as the pub is on the local authorities list.

In a second landmark decision a First Tier Tribunal concluded that the London Borough of Lewisham were correct to conclude that a local CAMRA branch is a valid nominating body. As such, local CAMRA branches can now nominate pubs to be listed as Assets of Community Value in their name.

Some important facts Pubs listed as ACVs will require planning permission to change their use or be demolished. This includes pubs already listed as ACVs.

Planning permission will be required for change of use and or demolition for the period that the pub is listed which is five years from the date of listing.

As part of the changes, pub owners and developers will be required to ascertain whether pubs not on the asset list have actually been nominated. This must be done formally in writing.

The local authority has 56 days to confirm whether the pub is listed or nominated. This means that the owner cannot change use or demolish a pub lawfully within the prescribed 56 day period.

How do I nominate a pub? Decide who you are nominating on behalf of. You can either nominate as an unincorporated group of 21 local people, as a Parish Council, on behalf of the CAMRA Branch or in connection with another local group.

Go to your Council website and look up the section on Assets of Community Value or Right to Bid. Here you can download a nomination form (the template is also available on the CAMRA website).

Home cooked Sunday lunches Meals served Tues - Fri lunchtime & evening and on Saturdays 12 - 4.30pm Bands & Discos at weekends Functions & parties catered for Conference room available for business use Four regularly changing real ales Six draught lagers Large beer garden with children’s play area Large car park Sky & BT Sports (Two TV’s) Pool and Darts

Blue Boar, Eye 76

blueboareye

Fill in the form with as much detail as you can on why the pub should be classified as a community asset.

If nominating as an Unincorporated Group, demonstrate that at least 21 people from the local community support the listing of the pub.

Check your local council website to see where the nomination needs to be submitted. Many councils have produced guidance explaining how they are accepting nominations.

Request a receipt from the local authority to acknowledge they have received the form as planning protection will be granted at the point of nomination.

Thank you to our sponsors With soaring costs the PBF needs to be more financially viable. Last year we suggested the idea of sponsorship a barrel of beer, the same as the Falmouth Beer Festival. It is very successful with the majority of their beer sponsored. Last year we were successful with a number of sponsors and the feedback during and after the festival was extremely positive. Anyone can sponsor a barrel. You get an excellent package of tickets, tokens, logo in the guide and above your barrel. If interested, email us or chat to us at the Sponsors Bar. A big thank you to all those who have sponsored us over the last couple of years

The

Bucket List

As you are all no doubt aware, the Beer Festival has for many years allowed the RNLI to drag money from you, the unsuspecting attendees of this great annual event. To date, your efforts have bought, paid for and maintained no less than 3 “D” Class and 1 “Atlantic 85” Lifeboats, which have, as the name suggests, saved lives. I have been collecting now for a long time and am always amazed at the level of generosity of the people, mainly from this City, but also from all over the country and indeed the world, towards our charity. And it is, let’s not forget, just that, a Charity. We receive no funding from government so every penny of the around £410,000 PER DAY it costs to run this service, is raised from the odd change, one off donations, bequests etc. from people, just like you.

For those of you who like to know where the dosh you give goes, aside from the costs of the Lifeboats themselves, to kit out an inshore crewman costs around £1,000, an all weather crewman around £1,500, a lifeguard about £400 and so on and so on. I empty a box at a small village pub out in the middle of nowhere, which normally has about £15 in it. One of the 78

customers once asked me “Is it worth the effort?” My reply was “Ask the crewman whose gloves this will pay for.” As far as we are concerned, EVERY PENNY is well worth any effort, and just like the volunteers who give up their holidays every year to stage this event and try to ensure that it is enjoyed by all, we don’t get paid either!

So, enjoy a quick half, a long gallon or a yard of Ale, enjoy the atmosphere, the ambience, the food, the music and the jolly banter! But as you wend your weary way home, at the end of what I hope has been a fun and full day or evening, spare a thought for we poor souls freezing at the front gate rattling our buckets and of course…

Chuck it in the Bucket!

Safe journey home.

Martyn Edgar RNLI. Peterborough Beer Festival 2015
