#readingbeerfest

WELCOME I'm currently writing this in the beer garden of one of Reading's local pubs, and the sun is blazing down on me (for the first time this year!). Unfortunately I have neither a crystal ball nor a machine that controls the weather. So I have no idea what the weather will be like when you are reading this. Hopefully the sun is shining and it's a beautiful day. However, even if its raining, may I first of all, on behalf of the many, many hard working and entirely unpaid volunteers who have made this festival possible‌. welcome you to the 21st Reading and Mid-Berks CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival. Once again Reading's biggest (although temporary) pub has a massive range of Real Ales on offer. In fact one of the biggest in the country. The same goes for the range of Ciders and Perries. If these do not tickle your fancy we also have a superb range of foreign bottled and draught beers and lagers on offer along with English wines, British Country wines and mead (mankind's first discovered alcoholic drink – and I'm sure the bees would be pleased with what us humans managed to achieve with the honey!).

So please, regardless of the weather, sit back, relax in the largest beer garden in the county, or chat with your friends at the largest bar in the country this weekend. Listen to the many local bands (Friday and Saturday), take part in our Pub Quiz (Thursday), have your face painted (Saturday and Sunday), play our traditional pub games or try your luck on the tombola; but whatever you do, above all we hope that you have a great time. I have one final and more serious point to make. The general election will be held very soon. Pubs are closing in the UK at a fearful rate. Last year I asked everyone to visit their local, say hello and have a drink. The Community Pub is a unique, valuable and much loved part of our heritage. Last year it was our turn to do what we could to keep our local open. This year when you vote can I ask you to please consider the record of your local politician and the national party they represent and vote accordingly. Perhaps this year we can have some official help in protecting our local pubs. Cheers Dave Scott Festival Organiser

Entertainment THURSDAY The opening day of the festival sees the return of the popular Pub Quiz. Starting on Thursday and continuing throughout the festival are the Traditional Pub Games. A selection will be available to play every day including long alley skittles, table football, table skittles, shut the box and toad in the hole. A range of prizes including bottled beer and T shirts are on offer for the champions. If you're feeling lucky, visit the Tombola for the opportunity to win a wide range of beer and pub oriented prizes plus some quirky stuff and soft toys. Plus, if you thought balloons were only good for children's parties, just watch Balloon Platoon, the masters of balloon sculpture. They will be making their way around the site producing balloon sculptures on request – perhaps a bracelet, an animal or the tallest piece of headgear you'll ever wear. Not to be missed.

FRIDAY Pub games, tombola and the Balloon Platoon continue. There's music all day on the main stage, covering all sorts of styles – see separate listings for details.

SATURDAY The Kennet Morris Men will perform in the afternoon. At 1pm and 3pm you can see a selection of traditional Cotswold style Morris dances, while at 2pm and 4pm it's time for Strictly Come Morris Dancing, with audience participation guaranteed. Why not visit the very popular face-painting stall for a truly outrageous makeover? Plus the pub games, tombola and the Balloon Platoon continue, and a selection of musical styles again grace the main stage – see separate listings for details.

SUNDAY Sunday at the festival has traditionally been a family friendly day allowing parents with young or teenage children (under legal drinking age) to enjoy the event in a more relaxed, family oriented environment. This year it's no different. For the youngsters, there's a whole host of fun, activities and competitions in our special "Halfpints" area (all children must be accompanied by an adult). You can also visit the face-painting stall in the afternoon. Plus the Reading Scottish Pipe Band will be providing musical entertainment. 4 21st Reading CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival

BEER LIST

The British Beer List

& tasting notes Real Ale has seen a huge growth in recent years. The number of breweries in the UK is now almost 1,300 and more and more of our local pubs are stocking real ale. We’ve got 555 different beers for you this year from breweries all over the country. Ranging from the tip of the Lizard in Cornwall, all the way up to Loch Ness, and we're also featuring 34 breweries from within 30 miles of the festival site. Some of the breweries have been going for hundreds of years, and we've a fair few that have opened their doors for the first time since last year's festival. The beers are ordered along the bar alphabetically by brewery. LocAle beers, brewed within a 30 mile radius of the festival site, can be identified by the LocAle symbol next to the brewery name, and on the cask end label. All the beers will be available from opening time, provided the cellar team are satisfied that they are ready to serve. Some may take longer to clear and so will come on later in the festival.

10 21st Reading CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival

Along with the tasting notes in the following pages, we have also done our best to provide an indication of the style of the beers with the help of a handy coloured pint glass next to the beer name. Pale = Yellow in the programme and on the cask end label Amber = Orange in the programme and on the cask end label Dark = Brown in the programme and on the cask end label Speciality = Purple in the programme and Blue on the cask end label Although we have done our best with beer details, the programme had to go to print before the beers arrived at the festival, so please refer to cask end labels for updated colour and ABV.

Allergy warning Allergen information for each beer is held at the bar on which it is located. If you require this information please ask a member of staff.

BEER LIST

MILD

Abbeydale Sheffield, S. Yorks 1996

CAMRA promotes Mild throughout May. These can be identified by the MILD next to the beer name. Mild is one of our most traditional beer styles and is enjoying a revival in today's real ale market. Usually dark brown in colour, due to the use of well-roasted malts or barley, it is less hopped than bitters and often has a chocolatey character with nutty and burnt flavours. Mild is a distinctive and tasty beer and is one of the oldest beer styles in the country.

HOPS Until the 15th century, ale and mead were the main British brews, both made without hops. Hops were introduced from Holland, France and Germany after this time. This also started the trend of reducing the strength of ale, as hops are a preservative and beers no longer had to be brewed as strongly in order to preserve them. The hop also started the rapid decline of mead, which is only made in a very few places today (do sample the range on the English Wine Bar!) As always, many thanks go to our suppliers, particularly Duncan and Buster at Brecon, Mary at Boggart Hole Clough, Mark at Cornish Crown, Kerry at Dark Star, Chris at Firebrand, Nina at Flying Firkin, Tom at Forest, Allan at Great Heck, Rob at Good Beer, Richard at Milton, Andy at Nelson, Paul at Small Beer, Sarah at Red Squirrel, Ben at Twickenham, and to all our direct delivery brewers. We hope you enjoy drinking the beers as much as we enjoyed choosing them. Cara Sheldrake & Katrina Fletcher Beer Orderers

Once again Reading Beer Festival cider and perry bar has one of the largest ranges in the country. Over 150 different options will be available over the course of the festival, with a small number being held back until Saturday to maintain the variety in the later days. These are marked prominently in the list below with SAT. Despite our best efforts, some things will change after the programme goes to press. For the most up to date information please refer to the cask end labels on the bar, or ask a member of our volunteer bar staff. An updated list will also be available on our website. Cider is fermented apple juice and perry is fermented pear juice. Depending on the style, cider can be made from a mixture of dessert apple varieties and cooking apple varieties, or from specialist cider apples. Cider apples are smaller and harder than cookers or eaters, but produce excellent juice for cidermaking. Perry is often made from specialist perry pear varieties - unsuitable for eating - but eating varieties have been known to be included. Most ciders and perries are a careful blend of several varieties, but some use just one single variety. These are noted as “SV” after their name in the list. Since 2003 the festival has hosted CAMRA’s National Cider and Perry Championships, a prestigious award judged by members of the public. As before, we are also running the South of England regional competition for both cider and perry, covering the counties of Dorset, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The regional winners will be announced on Friday 44 21st Reading CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival

afternoon and will go through into the national championship judging. The national champion ciders and perries will be announced at about 3.30pm on Saturday. If you are at the festival on Friday afternoon then you can volunteer to take part in a judging panel. The only qualification is liking cider or perry, as you will be guided through the whole process by an experienced CAMRA volunteer. If you want to join in, go to the cider and perry bar and you’ll be allocated to a panel and given a time for judging. Each panel takes about 45 minutes. Once again we are lucky to have a number of local producers, who are all making their ciders and perries within 30 miles of Reading. Local producers are indicated with green highlighting in the list below, and on the bar with special cask end labels. Perries are highlighted with a yellow background to help you spot them. The cask end labels also distinguish between cider and perry - green for cider and yellow for perry. As always, if you’re not sure where to start with such a range and choice, talk to the volunteer bar staff, who'll be happy to advise you. Paul Scrivens Cider Orderer

Allergy warning Whilst real ciders and perries have very basic ingredients, some do contain sulphites to control the fermentation process. If you have an allergy and need to know which products are affected please ask at the bar.

At the Reading Beer Festival we have a wide variety of Country wines. These are wines made from fruits (not grapes); sugar-rich vegetables and even leaves / bark from trees! We have ordered these high quality wines from Devon, Worcestershire and even far-flung Perthshire. Country wines tend tobe a bit sweeter than their grape counterparts, ranging from medium dry all the way to dessert wines, bringing us nicely to the ever popular mead. This honey-based wine is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages and it is believed that the term “honeymoon came from the tradition following weddings that the bride and groom would drink mead for a month. This year we can offer you the choice of five varieties of mead, the newest being Garden Mead and Tournament Mead (quite how anyone could ride a horse after drinking mead, let alone consider jousting is beyond me!). As well as Country wines we have some exceptional grape wines from our local vineyard, Stanlake Park. It is a short walk from Twyford station, in the grounds of a beautiful manor house. Well worth a visit!

FOREIGN DRAUGHT AND BOTTLED BEERS

We are delighted to offer our customers the opportunity to sample a number of beers from newly-formed breweries and from breweries which have not previously featured at the Reading Beer and Cider Festival, alongside many tried and trusted favourites. Of particular interest this year are two ‘collaboration’ brews: Rubberen Robbie - a lightly smoked 6.7% porter from two Dutch brewers, Oedipus and De Prael, brewed at De Prael in Amsterdam Greenflash West Coast IPA – an 8.1% double IPA brewed in Belgium at St Feuillien, in collaboration with Green Flash Brewing Company of San Diego In total there are around 150 beers selected to offer a good representation across the various styles and strengths. Lambic is a beer style spontaneously fermented with wild yeast and can be very sour – an acquired taste. If this is not something you have tried before you are welcome to come and chat to our team of volunteers prior to ordering beers from Girardin or Boon. They are knowledgeable and friendly and will be only too happy to answer your questions, offer guidance and recommend beers to suit your taste. Our thanks to José and Hugh from Bierlijn in Rotterdam for their enthusiastic support in enabling us to bring you an excellent range of Belgian and Dutch beers, and to Olaf Schellenberg who has trawled around his native land to bring you a superb selection of German brews and is usually to be found behind the bar ready to answer any questions you may have and to make recommendations. Please remember that all bottled beers are available for you to take home to drink but you are requested not to open bottles at the festival which have been purchased for take-away, as this infringes the terms of our licence.

FOREIGN DRAUGHT

& Bottled Beers As always, the beer list is subject to change as it is unrealistic to expect that all those ordered will arrive. Not all draught beers will be available at any one time owing to space restrictions: cask end labels will clearly indicate what is currently being served. We sincerely hope you enjoy sampling the beers as much as we did selecting the range. Cheers! Sue Thirlaway, John Thirlaway and Stephen Jackson Foreign Beer Ordering Team

Allergy warning All our beers contain gluten and some may contain additional allergens. If you have an allergy please speak to one of the volunteers behind the bar prior to ordering.
