Worcester beer fest guide 2016

Festival Information A very warm welcome to the Seventeenth Worcester CAMRA Beer, Cider and Perry Festival, brought to you by the Worcester branch of the Campaign for Real Ale. As always we’ve got a wonderful array of beer, cider and perry from near and far, with old favourites, brand new brews and some you’ve almost certainly never heard of. Make a plan, try something different, you may just like it ! For the non-beer, cider and perry drinkers amongst you we’ve also got a range of fruit and grape wines, both still and sparkling, fresh apple juice, soft drinks and tea & coffee, Soft drinks are also available from the food concessions, and there’s drinking water at the far end of the beer tent. You’ll see from your glass that Ticker, our favourite beer drinking horse, has donned his running kit this year, and seems to be doing well at a major sporting event in South America. Let’s hope the weather gods smile on us this year, and you can imagine yourself on a beach in Rio rather than a field in Worcester. We’ve got a theme to the beer selection this year. Four of the organising committee, the organiser, beer orderer, sponsorship co-ordinator and cooling specialist celebrated major birthdays recently, turning 50, 60, 70 and 70 respectively (I’ll leave you to guess whose birthday is which). To mark this momentous occasion we’ve got a variety of beers from the seven largest cities in the UK. Full details are in a separate article in the programme, but why not take a trip round the seven cities and celebrate with the old gits! If you want to try something different at the festival, why not have a go on the tombola stall. Three tickets for £1, and we have some exciting prizes this year, including a visit to Tom Oliver’s cider farm, tickets to the blues festival at the Old Bush, Callow End, Sunday lunch for two at the Whitehouse Hotel in Worcester, and lots more.

At the end of your day please think about putting some or all of your unused strike cards into the charity box. Our nominated charities this year are the Midlands Air Ambulance, Severn Freewheelers the emergency motorcycle courier service for hospitals in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, North Wiltshire and Herefordshire, and Acorns Children’s Hospice. Last year, thanks to the generosity of the drinking public we raised more than £2,500 to split between our three charities. Please remember that this festival is organised and run wholly by unpaid volunteers who devote huge amounts of their own time to put on what has become probably Worcester’s most eagerly anticipated social event. If we sometimes don’t reach the highest levels of professionalism it’s because we’re not professionals. We always need more help, so if you would like to get involved or just have a point you would like to make then we would love to hear from you. Contact us through the website, email me at organiser@worcesterbeerfest.org.uk, or just come and find me at the festival. Most importantly we hope you have a great day. Have a few drinks, listen to some music, enjoy the range of food we have for you and make a date to come back next year. Steve Chase Festival Organiser

At the Bar The ales, ciders and perries on the bars will be arranged in alphabetical order of the maker’s name. You will have to hand over your strike card(s) to the bar person who will strike out the appropriate cost amount (shown on the cask/tub label). Please make sure you have enough on your card prior to ordering your drink. More cards can be purchased, and cards with an amount remaining on them can be cashed in or donated to charity, by the entrance desk. Continued overleaf... Seven Cities This year’s Worcester Beer Cider and Perry Festival celebrates the burgeoning explosion of brewing in and around Britain’s largest cities. Why? Well, the main reason is a bit of selfindulgence by myself as the beer orderer! After hitting the big Five-O last year, I came up with the idea of ordering from the biggest five cities. However, the idea was soon expanded by the festival organiser and sponsorship manager who, respectively in 2016, hit the 60 and 70 mark. So the big seven it was! London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. If you look in the Good Beer Guide from 1999, the year of the first Worcester Beer Festival (there wasn’t Cider and Perry in the title when we started), it listed fifteen breweries in the

seven cities. Fast forward to 2016 and there is close to one hundred and fifty! Some breweries have of course survived the test of time and become firm favourites across the country, including at Worcester! Kelham Island and Abbeydale from Sheffield, along with Marble from Manchester are the prime examples. However, in the last few years they have been joined by dozens of new kids on the block, many of which are producing some of the tastiest and most interesting brews around. Step forward, for instance, Black Jack, Fixed Wheel, Liverpool One and Moncada. Faced with such a bewildering array of breweries and beers, it wasn’t easy making the choice as to which ones to order. However, rest assured that we haven’t just chosen the trendiest beers or those that want to pack so many hops into their brews that it’s like sucking on lemons. Equally, we haven’t just gone for the latest start 30

Worcester Beer, Cider & Perry Festival Programme 2016

ups. We’ve carefully selected a mix of breweries – old and new – that we think represent the pinnacle of what the Seven Cities can offer. Moreover, we’ve got loads of seasonal brews, specials and one offs, including beers in cask that are typically only available in keg. In some cases, like Clockwork brewpub from Glasgow, we’ve got hold of stuff that rarely leaves the premises, never mind makes it all the way down to Worcester!

Whatever you choose to drink, the aim as usual at the festival is to create the choice and atmosphere of your favourite boozer. From pale to stout, from weak to strong – they’re all here for you. Andy Wood, Bar Manager

As such, I am sure you will find loads of Seven Cities beer to your liking. But don’t think that’s the end of the story. We have not ignored the local suppliers from Worcestershire and surrounding counties, again carefully chosen to provide an eclectic and interesting selection, more than holding their own against the big city invaders! Finally, you can always seek out some of the ‘random’ beers that I’ve chucked into the mix, many of which are old festival favourites such as Exmoor Gold.

Festival Charities This year we are raising more for the Midlands Air Ambulance, Acorns and Severn Freewheelers. Please help us by putting your unfinished strike cards into the charity box on the festival entrance desk when you leave the festival.

Midlands Air Ambulance The Worcester festival has been helping raise money for the Midlands Air Ambulance for several years and once again we are please to have the Air Ambulance merchandise store on site. From just one helicopter flying out of a temporary air base to three helicopters serving a population of over 5.5 million people, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity has come a long way in since 1991. The dedicated flight crews have responded to over 38,000 incidents, saving countless lives, making them the busiest air ambulance organisation in the UK. What is not widely known is that Midlands Air Ambulance receives no Government or National Lottery funding. £6 million is needed each year to keep its three Air Ambulances operational, which is donated entirely by the public and local businesses.

Severn Freewheelers Severn Freewheelers is a group of advanced motorcyclists providing a free out-of-hours courier service for hospitals in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, North Wiltshire and Herefordshire. They carry whole blood, pathology samples, patient scans / x-rays, human milk - in fact any medical essentials between hospitals in the area. Their hours are from 7pm in the evening to 7am the following day, and 24 hours at weekends and public holidays. All riders are volunteers and hold a current advanced riding qualification (RoSPA or IAM) with a yearly check-ride. All receive extra training in emergency response riding and the transport of goods under UN3733. In short, a professional team delivering a professional service, FREE to the NHS at the point of use. Each "shift" consists of four people, a dispatcher and three riders, one in each area. The dispatcher fields calls from the hospitals and plans the route for the evening based on the calls received. Emergency calls are obviously dealt with first and for these we use blue lights. At weekends they increase the complement of riders to four to cope with extra demand. Severn Freewheelers is a charity organisation and they are always looking for help. If you feel that you would like to volunteer to either ride, dispatch or help with fundraising then please visit their website volunteering page for more details.

Campaign for Real Ale – Worcester Branch Diary Worcester CAMRA have regular meetings in pubs around South Worcestershire throughout the year. Mostly we meet up to chat, often about beer and pubs, but often we work on campaigns aimed to promote the great British pub and the Real Ale, Cider and Perry you’d expect to find there. Sometimes we hold formal meetings to make sure the organisation is ticking along, but even here there’s always enough time to do some quality control.
