GREETINGS FROM THE ORGANISERS Welcome to the Fourteenth Worcester CAMRA Beer, Cider and Perry Festival. The unimaginable is not only imaginable it may even be possible this year. What could we be talking about? A festival not only with no rain but also with blue skies and heat wave temperatures! There, I’ve said it but it may well happen and if it does please remember to slap on the sun cream and keep hydrated (and yes that does mean having the odd soft drink). Sadly we have seen two festival contributors pass away since the last festival. Mike Lee was a very keen volunteer and supporter of CAMRA. He often served behind the beer bar sometimes dressed as Herr Flick. And Malcolm Kay (Beery Bits and Bobs) was a regular at many CAMRA festivals around the country with his stall of comical t-shirts and beer related paraphernalia. They will both be sadly missed. All of the Worcester CAMRA Beer, Cider and Perry Festivals have been able to make large donations to local charities, thanks to the generosity of you, the drinking public who put leftover tokens in the charity box on the way out. Last year we were able to give £3,201.28, which was divided between the Midlands Air Ambulance, St. Richards Hospice and Cancer Research UK. On
behalf of these charities thank you for your generosity. This year we are supporting the Midlands Air Ambulance, Kidney Research UK and Worcester Snoezelen. Please help us to try and beat lasts year’s donations by putting your unused tokens in the charity box at the entrance desk. The festival is run totally by unpaid volunteers who give up huge amounts of time to put on this magnificent event. We do try our best – but if we sometimes fail to meet professional standards, it’s because we’re not professionals! Please bear this in mind, especially during busy periods at the bar. We always need more helpers, so if you’re inspired to come along and help out next year please contact us through the web site. We always like to hear your views, good or bad, to help us plan future festivals. Festival Guide At the Bar The ales, ciders and perries on the bars will be arranged in alphabetical order of the maker’s name. You will have to use your tokens to buy your beverage and any change due will be given to you in tokens.
Choosing your Beverage You may be overwhelmed with the options and unsure what to have. To help you out you can either use this programme, the information on the casks/tubs or if it’s not busy, ask one of the bar staff for advice, who will be more than happy to help.
The Programme Descriptions of the ales can be found in the programme. The ales are also colour coded both in the programme and on the front of the casks to show the style.

HOPYARDS OF THE MIDLANDS
Beers from the Hopshires - Britains Best Kept Secret
The hopyards of the Midlands produce more than half of the hops grown in the UK, but most beer drinkers are unaware that they exist. British hop varieties, from the venerable Fuggle and Goldings to the newcomers Sovereign and First Gold with many others beside, give the signature aroma and flavour of a British beer. They define traditional beer styles and can be used to thrilling effect in beers that are completely modern. During the 2013 hop harvest (Sept to Oct) local brewers will be invited to brew at least one beer containing only hops grown in the hopshires (Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire). It is hoped that this will become a unique regional identity and a message that, for the brewers involved, British hops are vital for the future of British brewing.

CIDER AND PERRY The Cider and Perry bar just keeps growing year on year! But don’t forget we also have a selection of fruit wines and apple juices available at this bar. So what is real cider and perry?
Cider Real cider is natural cider – the fermented juice of the apple, with nothing added (not even other fruits or fruit juices) and nothing taken away. Originally all cider fitted this description, but today the majority of cider is made from apple concentrate and is artificially carbonated, pastereurised and server under gas pressure.

Perry Perry is a drink so difficult to find that most people don’t know it exists or even worse associate it with the new trendy pear cider that is commonly available! The drink is made the same way as cider but from perry pears. There is a big demand for perry but producers cannot make enough of it, as there is not enough good quality fruit available. It takes three years for a perry pears tree in the right conditions to bear fruit, but up to thirty years before it is at full maturity. The following list represents the ciders and perries that we are hoping to have available at the festival. However, owing to the fact that we buy a lot of cider on ‘spec’, we cannot guarantee that all of the cider and perry listed will be on the bar nor can we provide tasting notes.

BEER FLAVOUR WHEEL You will see from the beer descriptions in this programme that a lot of different tastes can be detected in the many different brews available. But what sort of tastes can there be? In the 1970’s Dr Morton Meilgaard, a brewing chemist, developed a Beer flavour wheel to help present some of the multitude of beer tastes and defects. There have

FESTIVAL CHARITIES This year we are raising more for the Midlands Air Ambulance, Kidney Research UK and Worcester Snoezelen. Please help us by putting your unused beer tokens into the charity box on the festival entrance desk. Midlands Air Ambulance The Worcester festival has been helping raise money for the Midlands Air Ambulance for several years and once again we are please to have the Air Ambulance merchandise store on site. From just one helicopter flying out of a temporary air base to three helicopters serving a population of over 5.5 million people, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity has come a long way in since 1991. The dedicated flight crews have responded to over 38,000 incidents, saving countless lives, making them the busiest air ambulance organisation in the UK. What is not widely known is that Midlands Air Ambulance receives no Government or National Lottery funding. ÂŁ6 million is needed each year to keep its three Air Ambulances operational, which is donated entirely by the public and local businesses
Kidney Research UK Kidney Research UK is dedicated to improving the understanding of kidney disease, its causes, treatment and management through funding research, with confidence that it can build on the advances and scientific breakthroughs that have been made by researchers - many of them supported by the Charity - during the past forty years. The charity is funded almost entirely by voluntary donations and every contribution makes an impact. The spectrum of studies supported ranges from molecular investigation of how molecules, genes and cells work through to clinical trials and health services research, relating to kidney disease, dialysis and transplantation.
Worcester Snoezelen Worcester Snoezelen is a small independent charity, based in Worcester. They run a multi-sensory environment for people with severe learning disabilities. The centre is a community resource visited by over 400 people every week. Why is this needed? The world of people who have profound learning disabilities is often a confusing and threatening place over which they have no control. MIKE LEE YOU WILL BE MISSED Earlier this year Worcester CAMRA lost one of its most dedicated members when our good friend Mike Lee died suddenly at a very early age. Mike was always in the thick of CAMRA action, supporting both the festival and the branch with his enormous enthusiasm and sense of fun.
with blow up guitar and wig! Many of you who went on the branch bus trips will remember Mike's rendition of 'My Way' on the way back from supping numerous pints. He always managed to remember all 5 verses regardless of how much beer he had and he always gave all 5! Mike was a brilliant, fun guy who is missed by all of us who knew him and his memory will continue for many years and festivals to come rock on Mike!
He not only supported the social side of the branch activities he was also the membership secretary until his job took him away to Nuneaton a few years ago. Never one to abandon his friends, however, Mike still returned every year to work on the beer festival bar and to add his particular style to the job. Fancy dress was one of Mike's loves and he made appearances as 'Herr Flick' and Brian May of Queen complete
