Wayland’s basket case By Kathryn Ross

he fertile rolling fields around Wayland are perfect for growing potatoes, but they are also fertile fields for artistry. Wayland was first known as Middletown. In 1807 Christopher Zimmerman purchased the tract of land which would become the site of the town. In 1848 John Hess and Dr. Henry Hess purchased the acreage on which Calvin Clark plotted the streets of Middletown. Folklore has it that while the two brothers were inspecting Clark’s work, one was humming the tune to a favorite hymn, which included the words way land and the two decided to call their new town Wayland. In 1852 the Buffalo, Corning and New York Rail Road connected the village to the Erie Lackawanna line, and the small village’s growth began. Potatoes became the village’s economic sustenance and today there are still vast fields surrounding the village. Each year that heritage is celebrated at the Wayland Potato Festival. Yet while potatoes may be the village’s main claim to fame, it would be a rare spud that fetched a $100 bid on the open market. However the same cannot be said about the baskets decorated by one Sally Patchin who settled near ##/ + %0* * "%&.% Wayland at #& ##/ &) ) + % $&) the turn of + % !,*+ ') ++/ #&) # * the century. '# /* Sallie Nuttall of Philadelphia, Pa married horse trainer Bert Patchin in 1902 and moved to ##/ + %0* ' %+ Patchinville a *" +* ) +) *,) hamlet in the %+ (, * town of Wayland. As might be expected, given the time frame, Sally was progressive. After receiving art education in Paris, she taught art in the public schools in Philadelphia and after marrying she nurtured her love of art by painting scenes on baskets for friends as a hobby. The popularity of her painted baskets soon turned her

hobby into a cottage industry which employed several young women in the area. Patchin’s painted baskets became so popular that her small studio was visited by Eleanor Roosevelt, Lowell Thomas, and Genesee Valley historian/writer Arch Merrill. Patchin died in 1958 and in 1993 a file on her work was established in the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. Today the baskets and other items painted by Patchin have sold for hundreds of dollars on the antique collectables market. “Sally would get a kick out of that,” said Wayland Historical Society President Helen Sick, “because she sold her baskets for as little as 25 cents.” In a 1993 interview one of the women Patchin employed, Emma VanScorta said, “Sally wanted her baskets to be used and enjoyed…. She wanted styles that could be utilized as flower baskets, waste baskets, picnic baskets and sewing baskets.” Patchin didn’t just paint baskets, she was a charter member of the Patchinville Parent Teacher Association, served on the school board for 40 years, organized the first branch of the New York State Home Bureau, served as the first, vice-president of the Wayland Free Library, was active in the Red Cross and served on the board of Wayland Hospital. In 1902 William Gunlocke established the furniture company which recently celebrated its 110th anniversary. “Gunlocke’s style of furniture became popular because they could bend wood,” said Mary Lou Kiesl, a member of the historical society. Although beset by hard times throughout its history, today the robust company employs over 600. While in its past Gunlocke produced home furniture and décor,

today it is one of the leading manufacturers of school furniture. From the woodworking business arose Woodcroftery in the 1930s where wooden salad bowls were turned from burls and pieces of wood and painted with floral designs by and under the direction of Honnie Plail. They were first sold in the Early American Shop and later under the Woodcroftery brand.

The most popular, according to Sick, were the bowls painted with Dogwood blossoms. The Woodcroftery Shop was one of the largest manufacturer of wooden bowls in the United States. John Plail Cooley established the business in 1935 in an abandoned feed mill on Second Avenue in Wayland. Today the bowls “Made by Americans for Americans” are also very collectable. But while wooden bowls and furniture and baskets were popular items, brothers, Guy and Homer Bennett were interested in more modern devices – the automobile. In 1921 they established Bennett Bros. in Wayland, which is today the oldest, continuous Buick dealership in the world. Guy Bennett Jr. said, “I think they decided on Buick because they just liked the style of the car. They had a green and yellow touring car.” He guessed that when the business received its franchise in July 1922, the first Buick models they would have sold were the four or six cylinder 1923 models. Today the third generation of Bennetts is keeping the business alive in the original brick building located at 7 South Lackawanna Street According to Guy Bennett Jr. the building is being highlighted in Buick’s new national ad,)% +,) . * '&',# ) ,* vertising campaign and is being photographed with

Out of its roots as a potato producing area comes another notable Wayland resident. Bill T. Jones came to Wayland with his migrant farm laborer parents as a boy according to Sick. He was enrolled in the migrant laborer’s class at Wayland school, but when his parents chose to stay in the area, he became a member of the regular class, graduating in 1970.

A dance choreographer, in 1982 he helped establish the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company which obtained world-wide fame through performances in over 30 countries and 100 US cities. Jones was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1994 as part of the Black Renaissance. One of the most thriving businesses in Wayland today is the Wayland Historical Society’s museum at the corner of Washington and Main streets. FALL AUTO CARE Stay Abreast of Vehicle Recall Information Driving a new vehicle off of the sales lot can be exciting. Brand-new vehicles are supposed to be reliable and free from maintenance concerns. However, sometimes manufacturers recall a vehicle, forcing drivers to visit the auto body shop sooner than they had hoped. According to the Auto Insurance Organization, 390 million vehicles have been recalled since the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act became law in 1966. Vehicles are recalled for a variety of reasons, including poorly performing tires, faulty pieces of motor vehicle equipment and unsafe child safety seats. From 2009 to 2010, Toyota alone recalled 8.5 million cars, the single largest recall in history. It can be disconcerting to learn that your vehicle is being recalled. The uneasiness of driving a potentially dangerous vehicle coupled with the prospect of being without a car can be daunting.
