Kenneth W. Recktenwald August 5, 1929 - November 21, 1995 It has been 15 long years since you left us that November day. We were forced to say our “goodbyes”, although none of us were ready to do so. In the beginning, we wondered how we would ever go on without you there. You were our “best friend”, our teacher, our rock to show us strength and lead us when times seemed tough, a great husband, the BEST dad, our father-in-law and our very special “GRAMPY”. You were the one who always kept us in line when we needed it, yet you always kept us laughing. As time moved on, we kept your jokes, your special lines, and our precious Memories, not only close to our hearts, but also in our everyday routines to keep you with us always. We know that you have been watching over us, and guiding us through some pretty tough and challenging times, as well as through some pretty good ones too!! You would be especially proud of and happy with your precious grandchildren. They each have you “pouring” out of them, making us all smile. Kristine is your beautiful little farmgirl, tending to and showing her cattle, with all the gentleness yet toughness and pride that you instilled in us. She has that other side of her, as well, that is always “up to something”, playing her practical jokes and stunts, just like you would have!! KC (Kenneth Charles) has this determination and dedication to his sports, as well as his great love of hunting, just like you always had. And just like his namesake, he has his good looks, and that mischievous smile, always keeping you guessing as to what he is up to. Jourdan may be the quieter one of the bunch, but her seriousness and quiet side remind us of how gentle and thoughtful, that you could be too! She always follows that with her devilish grin, and she has that “twinkle” in those big, beautiful brown eyes that you always did. THEY ALL ARE SO YOU!!!!! We miss you terribly, sometimes, when it seems so unbearable, you seem to just “flow” out of one of us, somehow giving the rest of us the strength to carry on. I guess you always had faith in us and knew that we could. You may be away from us now, but we will be with you again someday! Just don’t stop being our angel, who watches over us. We love and miss you so.

TIME If the person has any of these symptoms, call 911. Stroke is a life-or-death emergency in which every minute counts.

Better ways to treat loneliness Changing how a person perceives and thinks about others is the most effective intervention for loneliness, a sweeping analysis of previous research has determined. Recently, researchers have said that loneliness can have negative effects on blood pressure, sleep quality, brain health and more. Loneliness is a health risk factor for heart disease and other problems, similar to obesity or smoking. “People are becoming more isolated, and this health problem is likely to grow,” said John Cacioppo, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of Chicago. “If we know that loneliness is involved in health problems, the next question is, what we can do to mitigate it.” Cacioppo and a team of researchers from the University of Chicago examined past research on loneliness. Their quantitative review, published in the Personality and Social Psychology Review, found that the best interventions targeted social cognition, rather than social skills or social interaction. A new study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, found that from 1997 to 2007, an estimated 229,023 children and adolescents younger than 19 were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments for sledding-related injuries - an average of more than 20,000 cases each year. Children ages 10 to 14 sustained 42.5 percent of the sledding-related injuries, and boys represented 59.8 percent of all the cases.

Doctors, nurses experience violence in hospitals recent article concerning violence toward nurses working in hospitals prompted me to delve deeper into this subject. What I found may surprise many of you. Most medical personnel have experienced some type of physical and emotional abuse while working in a medical setting. Although such abuse takes place more frequently in emergency and psychiatric settings, it can take place in any part of the hospital. And this is not a phenomenon that occurs just in this country. There are many studies discussing similar episodes of violent behavior toward medical personnel in numerous other countries. In Australia, 40 percent of nurses working in metropolitan emergency rooms and 30 percent working in rural emergency rooms experienced some type of violence or assault each month. It has become such a significant problem that the International Council of Nurses describes it as a world-wide epidemic. In the most recent study, about one-third of the nurses said that they experienced emotional abuse, and 20 percent actual violence, during their past work week. In this study, the violence was most frequently perpetrated by a patient, though a family member was sometimes the guilty party. Although nurses and nurses aides are subject to the most violence, physicians are also victims of such abuse. Unfortunately, it is not unusual to read about a

doctor killed by an unhappy or depressed patient or an addict seeking drugs. Physicians involved with abortion clinics are also at particular risk of facing violence. At one time, hospitals were considered safe havens where healing took place. Now, because of the spectrum of violence that exists within its doors, most hospitals have large security forces in place. Violence toward medical personnel also takes place outside of the hospital setting. The results of one study showed that in approximately 5 percent of patient encounters, EMTs were faced with some type of violent behavior. The medical profession is considered to be a “helping and healing” profession with the purpose of easing the pain and suffering of those for whom they care. But, unfortunately, it has also become a profession that is subject to violence from the very people they are trying to help. According to medical research, the "winter blues," or depression associated with cold weather, occurs when daylight hours are shorter and people hunker down indoors. Symptoms associated with seasonal depression (known as seasonal affective disorder) include fatigue, lack of enjoyment, change in eating habits, irritability and difficulty concentrating. Put simply, seasonal depression, or SAD, can be brought on by how your brain reacts to the decrease in sunlight, according to the Mayo Clinic. Roughly midway through autumn, the days feel shorter, and the amount of sunlight per day will continue decreasing until winter begins Dec. 21. One way to stay healthy and avoid winter blues and SAD is to get a sufficient amount of natural sunlight. Combining exercise with a healthy diet can also help. Noel Clevenger of Springfield, Ill., makes a point to keep her family healthy by getting plenty of outdoor exercise during the colder months of the year. "My two boys (ages 9 and 7) are very active, so we try to do as much as we can outside," she says. "We walk the trails ... go to the playground, and when it snows, my husband takes them sledding." You don't have to hide from cold weather. There are many ways to enjoy it — go for a family hike, strap on some skis, go sledding at the park or build a snowman.

Go Green With Holiday Cleanup The holiday season has arrived. Celebrations and gifts will be at the forefront of the festivities. Once all of the gifts are torn open, there are bound to be mounds of wrapping paper in each and every home, which can mean damaging waste for the environment. Wrapping paper, boxes and ribbons tossed straight into the garbage can mean that pounds of added trash will end up in landfills across the country. According to the Clean Air Council, an additional 5 million tons of waste is generated during the holidays in the United States. Four million tons of that waste is wrapping paper and shopping bags. There are smarter solutions to dealing with holiday clean-up. The first step is choosing environmentally responsible wrapping materials. Glossy, metallic or embellished wrapping paper may not be easily recycled -- or even recyclable at all. Instead, look for wrapping paper that is made from recycled materials and can, in turn, be recycled once more. Consider wrapping gifts in plain, brown mailing paper and decorate the outside with earth-friendly paints. Next, nix the tissue paper inside of gift boxes. It doesn't really serve a functional purpose, except for further delaying the reveal of the gift inside. Tissue paper alone accounts for a lot of extra trash. Skipping it means a person will be saving money and the environment. Here are some other green cleanup tips. * Designate a child or adult to gather the discarded wrapping materials and sort the piles into trash. Ribbons and bows can be reused, as can many gift boxes and bags. * Shred paper items that are bound for the trash to reduce their volume and require fewer trash bags for transport. * Find out if a shipping store will take foam peanuts and air-filled wraps to be recycled. * Be sure to collect expired batteries and recycle them at a facility that does so. * Christmas trees can be taken down and sent for mulching. Many communities collect trees after the season is over for this purpose. Because there is bound to be some extra garbage during the holidays, individuals can take steps to curb trash in other aspects of their lives this time of the year. Some ideas include using cloth napkins and actual dishes and cutlery instead of disposable items. Before purchasing new gift paper, sort through last year's collection to see what items can be reused. Cutting the front off of holiday cards and using them as gift tags is another way to recycle.
