Springwater, Rochester’s drinking fountain By Kathryn Ross

ontroversy has always been part of Springwater’s history according Town Historian Havilah Toland. It started he believes with the formation of the town in April 1816 when it was formed from parts of the neighboring towns of Naples on the east and Sparta on the west, continued when the City of Rochester robbed the area of the economic development of nearby Hemlock Lake in the late 1800s and continues today to some extent. “People have never really gotten over the idea of Springwater being formed from parts of Ontario County ,” Toland said. The first settler in the area was Seth Knowles who arrived in the Hemlock Valley formed by Hemlock Lake and the Cohocton River in 1807. A few years later when more settlers had arrived the name Springwater was selected due to the “abundance and excellence of the springs which everywhere break out along the bottom of the hilly grounds, and was chosen at a meeting of the inhabitants called to petition for its erection” according to the “History of Livingston County” by L.L. Doty. Toland said that in the mid-1800s, when a health craze was in vogue, nearby Hemlock Lake was quickly becoming a resort area similar to Lake Placid in the east. “It was known for the purity of its water,” said Toland. Added to that was its abundant fishing with land-locked salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout, smallmouth bass, largemout bass, rock bass, yellow perch

and white crappie. There were three, large resort hotels on the lake and over 65 privately owned cottages along its seven mile length. Steamboats plied its waters bringing goods and services to tourists and residents. The Erie Railroad had come through the area in 1852 and Springwater, at the southern tip of Hemlock Lake , was booming. The village was not only the supply depot for the lake’s hotels and residents, but also a source of entertainment with restaurants, an ice cream parlor, book store, post office, hardware store, blacksmiths, banks, six churches and a place to purchase Studebaker wagons and carriages. “Springwater was flourishing, along with being an agricultural area,” Toland said. In 1820 there were 1,154 residents. Just 20years later the town reached an all time high of 2,832 residents. In 1990 there were 2,407 residents according to the U.S. Census. Hemlock Lake is a one of the minor Finger Lakes, located mostly within Livingsston County and about 35-miles south of Rochester, which was the cause of its demise as a resort area and the economic development of Springwater. ‘“Glory! Hemlock Water at Last!” was the headline in a Rochester newspaper in Jan. 1876 when water from Hemlock Lake flowed into Mt. Hope Reservoir bringing pure drinking water into the city of about 70,000 people,” according to a historical account of the time. “The event occurred after more than three decades of political bickering and aborted construction attempts and only after a small group of Rochester residents petitioned the state legislature for, an act to supply the city of Rochester with pure, wholesome water" passed on April 27, 1872,” the account continues. Ground was broken on June 1, 1873. Another Springwater historian, Joyce O’Neil said that many of the cottages and hotels along the lake were purchased through writs of eminent domain. “There are families who are still angry about that,” she said. For those that may not have already heard, my Father, Lt. Charles “Charlie” Raynor, NYC EMS #188 (Ret.) passed away late Friday evening, November 2, 2012. If you were lucky enough to have known him, you should know that he liked you better than you knew, even if he didn’t know you as well as he would have liked. If you didn’t get the chance to make his acquaintance, here’s a little taste of what you missed. See you again real soon, Dad. You never had to say it for me to know, ‘cause actions speak louder than words…… So the french think Gerard Depardieu’s a hero, for taking his daughter on vacation? Please. Step Aside, and let the Man come through... When I was a kid, my Dad was a Lieutenant in NYC EMS, and was assigned to work at the EMS station at Elmhurst Hospital, directly across the street from where we lived. Convenient. I think my Dad would take the car and drive around the block when he was late, just so he could honestly say he was stuck in traffic. Back then, I didn’t really have an opinion of my Dad. He was just sort of THERE. On occasion on weekends or in the summer, my Mom would send either myself, my brother, or both of us across the street with my Dad’s lunch, so he could have something hot and homemade to eat. I was sent off on my own one day when I was ten, to do just that. But I had time and a quarter, so I stopped off downstairs at the candy store, which was actually a front for a bookie parlour (i.e. Illegal gambling), to play a game of DigDug. Back then, there was no PS3 or Xbox 360, we had to go out to the arcade and play on consoles as big as a bookcase if we wanted to play a videogame, and DigDug was one of my favorites. The console was set in the back of the store, across from the doorway to the “Back Room”, in front of which, on a stool sat a surly looking large gentleman, whose name I never knew. One of the neighborhood teenage thugs was already playing when I walked in, so I put my quarter up on the screen (That’s how we held our place on line for games back then.), stood back, and watched him play. It wasn’t long until he messed up in the game, and lost a life. He turned on me and said “Look what you did! You messed me up!” and slapped me across the face. Hard. Back then, no one spoonfed us the “If you believe in yourself, and have a little bit of magic, all your dreams will come true.” malarkey kids hear nowadays. We got “Life is hard and unfair, so expect to fight for everything you get, and don’t expect to get everything you deserve.”, even from Sesame Street. Like him or hate him, Oscar the Grouch told it like it was. So I sucked it up, and waited for the thug to finish his game. This went on for a short while. He’d mess up, blame it on me, hit me and go on with his game, until eventually it was over. When it was finished, I went to grab my quarter, when this thug gave me a shove. “Since you messed up my game, you little jerk, I’ll be taking your quarter. Now back off.” he said. What could I do? I was ten. So I picked up my Dad’s lunch, and headed across the street to his office. So into his office I went. He was sitting behind his desk, in a white and forest green uniform that was probably not the right size, based on the way the buttons were struggling to keep his shirt together while he sat. He wasn’t fat, he was just... Big. He was reviewing some sort of chart when I walked in, and looked up when I put his lunch down on the only bare spot on his desk. He spotted the welt on my face, cocked an eyebrow (In our family, the men tend to have only one, so use your imagination.), and asked “So what happened to you?”. When I told him, he turned bright red, grabbed a radio from the charger on his windowsill, stood up (He actually seemed to grow and fill the office, like Apollo in the Original Star Trek episode “Who mourns for Adonis?”. It was kinda scary, but also kinda cool.), turned to me with a face that looked like fury incarnate, and said “Come with ME.” Back across the street we went. Naturally, being a child of my generation, I thought ‘Great. Now I’m gonna get my butt kicked in stereo. Oh well. Two cheeks, no waiting.’ as we walked up to the storefront. I was even more sure when my Dad threw the door open with a loud BANG! The fact that the thug didn’t even look up from the game did nothing to allay my fears. I had entered “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.” mode, right up until my Dad marched up to the thug, grabbed a handful of his hair, and smashed his face into the console. Apparently, everyone involved except for me had a pretty good grasp of what was going on. The surly man at the doorway stood up, motioned as if he wanted to say something, decided against it, neatly folded his racing form, and retreated into the back room. My Dad had gone from trying to put this thug’s head through the screen, to slathering his face with open palm slaps with one hand, while he held the thug’s shirt collar with the other. It looked as if he were buttering a recalcitrant piece of soft white toast, with freshly churned retaliation. Whenever the thug tried to get his hands up to protect his face, my Dad would throw him up against the videogame console to get him to drop his hands, and start all over again. Dad didn’t invent the b____-slap, but he had a hand in it’s development. I know this because of what happened next. The thug had stopped squealing, and managed to start snivelling. “Why are you slapping me?” he begged. My Dad hauled the thug up to his feet, pulled him to within an inch of his face, and yelled “BECAUSE YOU’RE NOT MAN ENOUGH TO DESERVE MY FISTS!” loud enough to make the store windows rattle. This drew the attention of George, the neighborhood beat cop, who just happened to be walking by as this was going on. He stuck his head in the doorway and asked my Dad, “What’s goin’ on, Charlie?” Now in my 40+ years on the planet, if I’ve learned one rule, it’s this: NYPD cops are just like prostitutes, i.e. There’s never a really good one around when you need one. But every rule has it’s exceptions, and today would be that day. “Just dealing with a little domestic problem, Georgie.” My Dad answered. “Good enough.” George said, and walked away, ignoring the pleas of the now properly chastised thug. My Dad grabbed him around the base of his head. “You see that kid? DO YA!?”. The thug wimpered in the affirmative. “That kid’s PROTECTED, understand? If he comes home with so much as a sniffle from now on, it’s coming out of YOUR BUTT, GOT IT?!” I’m not sure if he got it or not, but it was obvious that he wanted to get out of there ASAP, to tend to his bloody nose and rapidly swelling face. So, he went to grab the seven quarters he’d put up on the screen of the console, when my Dad grabbed him by the wrist, and bent his hand backwards. “Since you messed up his game, you little jerk,” My Dad sneered, “He’ll be taking your QUARTERS. Now back off.” The thug’s family would move out of the neighborhood within two months. It’s terrible when you can’t count on your local police to protect your children, isn’t it? Most people never figure out what their folks are about. I certainly haven’t. But get lucky enough to see them from a whole new perspective, you might just find yourself walking away with a different point of view, or so Johnny Cash says. All I know is thirty years on, I still prefer the view from here.
