veryone, from law enforcement officers to Oprah Winfrey to President Barack Obama, is urging people to avoid distractions like cell phones and GPS devices while driving. Now, AAA is targeting auto passengers that have very little to do with the operation of a car: Fido and Fluffy. According to AAA, 31 percent of respondents to a re-

cent survey admitted to being distracted by their dog while driving, and 21 percent have allowed their dog to sit in their lap while driving. The survey follows on the heels of Winfrey's "No Texting" campaign (to remind people to stop texting while driving). In addition, there was an official 2010 Distracted Driving Summit hosted on Sept. 21 in Washington, D.C., and there are ongoing efforts by law enforcement officials to encourage safe driving habits.

The U.S. Department of Transportation defines distracted driving as "any non-driving activity a person engages in that has the potential to distract him or her from the primary task of driving and increase the risk of crashing." In 2008, nearly 5,900 people died and almost half a million people were injured because of automobile accidents involving a distracted driver, according to the National Automotive Sampling System General Estimates System. Driving while distracted occurs with people of all ages, but it has the deadliest consequences for younger, inexperienced drivers. Statistics show that drivers under the age of 20 have the highest proportion of fatal auto accidents because of distractions — and the number of young people who text while driving is increasing. There are three main types of driving distractions: • Visual taking your eyes off of the road

Distracting activities listed by the Department of Transportation include talking on a cell phone, using a personal digital assistant or a navigation system, watching a video, changing the radio station or CD, eating, drinking, talking to passengers and grooming. Other distracting activities are daydreaming, having strong emotions and searching or reaching for loose items while driving.

Sometimes, those loose items are pets traveling unrestrained in vehicles, according to AAA. A lot of animals travel by car. According to a survey by Nationwide Mutual Insurance, nearly 90 percent of pet owners travel with their pets — and many of those pets roam free in the vehicle, often standing on hind legs while catching the breeze blowing through an open window. And when a collision occurs, an unrestrained dog or cat can become a dangerous projectile. Sangamon, Ill., County Chief Deputy Jack Campbell

said he uses this example when speaking to driver's education students: "If you're going 60 mph and you hit a brick wall, everything inside the car that's not strapped down continues to go 60 mph until something stops it. If anything hits you or your passenger at 60 mph, you're going to get injured." Campbell says that it's a good idea to avoid having a pet in the car if you can. If you must take your pet in the car, "at the very least, use a pet carrier or pet restraint. At best, use a pet carrier that's buckled in."

Cancer survivors report sex issues Seven out of 10 younger breast cancer survivors reported problems with sexual function at the first follow-up after treatment, a large Australian study showed. Overall, 59 percent of study participants reported some issue related to sexual function, and among those younger than 70 who had a regular partner, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction was 70 percent, as reported online in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. "Over 80 percent of all women in our study declared that their sex life before breast cancer was good and satisfying," wrote Mary Panjari, Ph.D., of Monash University in Australia, and her co-authors in their discussion of the findings. "The group with sexual function problems was more likely to have experienced loss of desire (and) a decrease in sexual activity (and was more likely to) be concerned about this and want an increase in their level of desire." — MedPageToday.com

t’s a hot August night, and Kristin Horky has the house to herself. The reason? Her husband has taken their kids swimming. Kristin and Chad Horky's two sons, Zack, 8, and Spencer, 9, enjoy physical activities. In the summer they swim, bike and skate. Then, when school gets back in session, their attention turns to sports. Both play on football, basketball and baseball teams. "They've always been interested in sports," says Horky, of Blissfield, Mich. "Every sport, every season." But what if your elementary-age child has no interest in sports? Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the last 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and physical activity is a key component in addressing this issue. Fitness can still be achieved without being on some kind of team. "I always ask this question of my college students: How many of you have ever gotten a bicycle for Christmas or your birthday?" says Dr. Adam Coughlin, assistant professor and department chair of exercise science and physical education at Adrian College. "And half the kids raise their hands. But when I was growing up — I'm 35 — everybody got bikes." Today, he says, it's video games that show up on Christmas and birthday wish lists. Common activities like biking, walking, swimming and helping with housework and the yard can be excellent ways for children to be active. For both children and adults, at least 30 minutes of exercise three to four days a week is recommended to see health benefits, Coughlin says. But those 30 minutes can be broken up throughout the day. Biking, hiking, kayaking and swimming are all things people can do over the course of their lives," Pfeiffer said. “If you have a dog, and you're going to walk the dog, get your kid to go with you. My take-home message would be, not only should people be doing these things with their kids, but they should make them a habit." Both professors suggested finding fun ways to almost "trick" children into exercising: things like giving them a soccer ball to kick around the yard or combining hiking with nature-based activities like looking for bugs, birds and leaves. Dr. Gretchen Warwick, a clinical psychologist at Warwick Associates in Adrian, Mich., says many children also enjoy more organized activities like dancing or playing kickball and shooting hoops in the backyard. "In this day and age, the greatest obstacle to children being active is their addiction to electronic media," Warwick said.

Promotes good vision and a healthy immune system. Look for beta carotene in supplements (retinol or retinoic acid increases the risk of bone fracture). Vitamin D 10 mcg for ages 51 to 70; 15 mcg for ages 71 and up. Helps the body to absorb calcium, and helps to prevent heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Folic acid 400 mcg for men and women. Helps to form red blood cells and produce DNA. When coupled with vitamins B6 and B12, folic acid may reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration. Vitamin E 15 mg for men and women. Helps protect cells from damage and may reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and chronic diseases. Don't take it in conjunction with a blood thinner. Supplements may cause side effects. If you have certain diseases, such as cancer or diabetes, your body may have special nutritional needs. Be sure to talk to your doctor about the vitamins and supplements you take.

Preemies face dangers in daycare Exposure to common viruses in daycare puts children with a chronic lung condition caused by premature birth at risk for serious respiratory infections, according to a study from Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Researchers say their findings should prompt pediatricians to monitor their prematurely born patients, regardless of age, for signs of lung disease and to discuss the risks of daycare-acquired infections with the children's parents. These risks, the researchers found, include increased emergency room visits, medication use and breathing problems.
