COMMUNITY CALENDAR DANSVILLE Dansville Area Historical Society The Dansville Area Historical Society Museum is open every first and third Saturday of the month from 10am until 2pm The museum is located on 14 Church St., Dansville. Admission to the museum is free, donations are greatly accepted. Dansville Area Ministerial Association (DAMA) is hosting A Service of Hope: Seeking Light for Times of Darkness on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 4pm at the Dansville Presbyterian Church, 3 School Street. Held near the longest night of the year, this service is for those of us who struggle to find the joy in this holiday season. If you are struggling with grief, loneliness, depression, hurt, anger, the loss of a loved one or job, and are having a hard time feeling God's presence, come as you are and worship with us. CANN needs your help! We are looking for your gently used household goods, furniture and clothing. We try to answer the immediate needs of fire victims, displaced people, or folks who just have nowhere else to turn. Community Answers Needs

Network takes donated, useful, surplus household goods, furniture and clothing from members of the community and recycles them back to members of the community who need them. We work closely with the local food pantry, Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Vincent de Paul Society, area schools and churches. For donations, needs or questions call Clare at 585-335-6973.

HOMETOWN THRIFT STORE Give the gift of camp this Christmas I know that this time of year with the cold wind, icy roads and snowy yards does not invoke thoughts of summertime, but it will be here before you know it. And Christmas is the best time to be thinking of summer camp because this is a time for children to given gifts that make their lives a little happier and help them grow as individuals. A week of summer camp achieves both of those goals. And it doesn’t require batteries or distract from time spent on homework. What we have learned over the years is that summer camp is not just an optional activity or a way to entertain bored kids over summer break. It’s an essential part of young people’s development into mature and Godly adults that will raise strong families and improve their communities. Another benefit of summer camp is the opportunity to deepen faith and connect children with local churches that want to help their families succeed. Statistics show that as many as 80% of church youth will walk away from the faith once they enter college. Many of those will NEVER return. What are we doing as a church to stop this tide of lost youth into eternity? Summer camp is a valuable tool in the arsenal of any leader looking to keep youth involved and growing in the faith. This investment will not only reap a harvest of fun for your kids, but it will plant seeds of faith that will grow and develop for many years to come. Many Christian children are raised in a sheltered environment of church & Christian school and when presented with worldly choices in college they fall by the wayside in alarming numbers. It is important to train your children from a young age to make the right decisions in a culture that glorifies the wrong ones. At Hope Valley Camp more than 50% of our campers do not attend a local church or attend only rarely with a grandparent. This creates a community of youth living and learning together without the traditional constraints of “Christian society”. In this environment children are challenged to defend their faith and to accept the truth of God’s word for themselves. Faith becomes personal and relational, not simply a mechanical effort made on Sundays and at youth group. There was a wonderful little article that drives this point home in the March/April 2011 edition of Insite magazine from the Christian Camping & Conference Association (CCCA.org) Quoting from the article

Sheriff and stored in a garage, it had 180,000 miles when I bought it this spring. 21 ft. long x 9ft. wide x 6ft. high with a fiberglass body, the bus has windows all around and the uppers open. All 6 tires are good. My mechanic says the engine and transmission are sound. It needs brakes which he says will cost under $300. There is a school bus type door for passengers, an emergency door in the back and a 4ft. wide door on the side (for a wheel chair lift?) that is perfect for loading furniture, paneling, boxes, tools, music equipment, etc. Things it has but I’ve never used include: an A/C unit on the ceiling, a heater on the floor in back and all sorts of buttons and dials on the dash. I carpeted and paneled it, used it for a camper, lived in it for 8 weeks, then hauled stuff to craft fairs. Later, I stripped it and moved furniture for a friend.
