We hope everyone has enjoyed the summer It is hard to believe it is time to return to school already. As we move into the new school year, we would like to share some announcements. First of all, the Board of Education would like to thank Dominic Aloisio, our business administrator, who had taken on the acting su-

perintendent position while Mr. John Allman was out. We greatly appreciate all the time and effort he has given the district. Mr. Allman has notified the district that he will not be returning to his position as superintendent of schools. We wish him only the best in regard to his ongoing recovery and we thank him for his service to the KCS community. That being said, the board has discussed various alternatives going forward. The results of our last superintendent search gave us two finalists in John Allman and Donald Covell. The Board had a painstaking decision to make at that time, as both candidates were very well thought of in regard to what they could bring to Keshequa

in the superintendent position. Generally speaking, we saw both of them as very qualified individuals. Therefore, instead of going out to do yet another search, which would be the third search in less than two years, we have reviewed our options and have decided to offer the position to Donald Covell. Based on the current needs of the district, we believe this is the best choice for Keshequa at this time. He has a vast knowledge of education and many years of experience. In his previous position with SUNY Brockport, he was acting chair of the Department of Educational Administration. Over the years, he has taught many of the administrators working in schools all over western New York. We see

Who Is To Blame? A mother of three children, Rosemary, was in bed in her apartment in the Bronx, watching television with her seventeen month old daughter, Sapphire. Rosemary had just told her older son to take a bath (age 13), and she heard the bathwater running down the hall. Sapphire got up off of the bed and walked down the hall while Rosemary continued watching TV. Moments later, Rosemary heard Sapphire screaming and ran to the bathroom, where Sapphire had fallen in the tub and was scalded by the hot tub water. Rosemary immediately began taking Sapphire’s steaming clothes off, and noted that Sapphire’s skin was coming off, too. She was rushed to the hospital, but Sapphire remains badly disfigured by her burns years later. Sapphire and her mother sued the building owners, the company that maintained the building’s hot water boiler, and the company that supplied the fuel to the building, claiming that they were responsible for Sapphire’s injuries because the water from the tap was dangerously hot. The building owner, fuel company and boiler company countered by alleging that Sapphire was injured solely as a result of Rosemary’s poor supervision of Sapphire. An appellate court in Manhattan ruled for the defendants and threw the case out, stating “A landlord cannot be required to adjust the hot water temperature to protect children from adults who fail to do so.” Rosemary and Sapphire appealed the case to New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals, which restored the case against the building owner and boiler company, and directed that a trial be held to determine who is to blame for Sapphire’s injuries. What do you think? Is it mom’s fault that Sapphire got burned, or the defendants? A few other tenants had complained over the years that the water was too hot, but this also proves that Rosemary, who had lived in the building for years, also knew it was very hot. Cleaning a home is not only inexpensive to improve its feel and look, but it should also be free unless the occupants are genuine pack rats. For homeowners who have lived in the same home a long time, clutter has probably crept its way into the home and taken over certain areas. isual abilities that a child will need in school and throughout life are developed during preschool years. Therefore, taking your child for a bona fide eye exam is critical. An eye exam is much more thorough than a screening common to schools. Screenings may miss 60 percent of children's vision problems. With 85 percent of a child's learning being sight-related, detecting vision problems early is essential.

Q. Why is it important to have your child's eyes checked?

A. Vision is more than just 20-20. Yes, children need good visual acuity, but they also need many other skills to efficiently learn and even participate in sports. Those skills include focusing, tracking, teaming, perception and coordination. Focusing allows a child to quickly change and maintain clear vision from distance to near. Tracking lets the eyes follow along while reading or following a fly ball. Teaming permits us to appreciate depth. Visual perception takes every input from the eyes and combines them to recognize, comprehend, retain and coordinate with the rest of the body. That is why some estimate that 80 percent or more of childhood learning occurs through the eyes.

Q. When should your child have his or her first eye exam? A. The American Optometric Association recommends a first

examination at six months of age. The six-month examination focuses on disease detection and proper eye development. Based on family history and examination results, a recommendation will be given for the next exam. In low-risk children — those whose first exam and family history are essentially normal — a second, more comprehensive exam will follow at age 3 and again before entering kindergarten. However, these ages are not set in stone. If any signs or symptoms referenced below are found, then the time may be now. Earlier detection results in better outcomes.
