2020 - the Year that Lasted a Lifetime - is finally coming to a close. I hope you all have experienced health, happiness, safety and love throughout the year. Amelia is a school teacher and has worked in the SRVUSD for 8 years. In 2018 she was named “Teacher of the Year” at Stone Valley Middle School where she teaches sixth grade core. Teaching is her calling, and Amelia has earned the love and respect of her co-workers and students alike. Her passion for teaching and athletics combined a few years ago and she began teaching spin classes at a local gym as well as continuing to educate young minds.

ason and Amelia Caldwell have spent the better part of 2020 hanging out at home with their one-year-old son, Tristan. It’s a far cry from their usual routine of traveling, teaching, working out, and spending time with family and friends from all around the world. Their story starts over a decade ago when a chance meeting in San Ramon led to a couple of dates in between crazy schedules. As Amelia’s school schedule at University of San Francisco and Jason’s work travels became increasingly mismatched, the blossoming relationship fizzled out. Jason never gave up hope, and with the help of a little liquid courage, he reached back out to Amelia at the end of 2012 and reconnected. They were finally able to schedule a date on New Year’s Eve Day. “Because I wasn’t totally convinced she was attracted to me, I decided to make sure she knew how funny I was. We met at what was then La Boulange in Danville. After a two hour coffee that turned into lunch, we hugged goodbye and wished each other a ‘Happy New Year.’ 10 minutes later I received a text that read, ‘I had no idea how funny you are!’

Jason’s career is one for the record books - quite literally. He owns a leadership development company named Latitude 35. “We run management and leadership training courses for large organizations and business schools around the world.” As if traveling to different countries wasn’t adventurous enough, Jason has added another aspect of inspiration to his career. “Every year I build and train a team for one epic world record attempt. To date I have rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean twice, once in 2015, and again in 2016.” It was his successful win in 2016 that landed him and his team in the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest team to ever row across the Atlantic Ocean. It took the four-man team 35 days, 14 hours and 3 minutes to complete “The World’s Toughest Row.” This amazing feat was all captured on film by the Oscar winning producers of Free Solo, so soon we will all be able to watch Jason and his team conquer the Atlantic Ocean. When chasing world records is your passion, one is definitely not enough: and in 2018, Jason and his team from Lat 35 set another world record by becoming the first people to cross the world’s oldest desert, the Namib, on foot and unassisted. Jason and his teammates will shoot for another record (or two) in 2021 when they row from San Francisco to Hawaii in hopes of being the first team to ever win both the Atlantic and Pacific trans-ocean rowing races. “We are fortunate to have clients around the world, which has given me the opportunity to travel to over 35 countries across my career, many of which Amelia has been able to travel with me.” One of the things that Jason and Amelia are looking forward to as Tristan grows older is being able to show him some of these amazing places they’ve gone. They’re excited to continue living a life full of adventure so that Tristan “can grow up to enjoy the adventures as well, but more importantly, understand the world better, gain perspective, and develop into a kind, accepting, and inclusive young man. It’s important for

Amelia and I to show our son how lucky we are to live where we do, and that diversity is what makes our adventures so exciting.” The Caldwells recently joined Diablo Country Club, where they’ve been able to meet and connect with fantastic families and enjoy the amenities of the club. Living near SRVHS means that Amelia and Tristan can stroll the Iron Horse Trail daily and the whole family can walk to all of the awesome shops and restaurants we have downtown. They realized that since Tristan was born there hasn’t been one walk through Danville where they haven’t spotted a friend or neighbor and stopped to chat. “It is and always will be one of our favorite parts of living in Danville.” Although 2020 put a stop to their yearly travel plans, like a week in NYC, filled with traditions important to the Caldwells, it also comes with a silver lining - an even deeper appreciation of the town they live in. “We’ve thought about moving to other places, but in the end could never leave the magic of Danville. It has everything we could ask for, including great hiking and running trails just outside our front door, great restaurants, great weather, friendly neighbors, and great community leaders.”

first “met” Brett Mortensen on Instagram, when I saw his weekly shoutouts to women-led businesses in our community. As a member of a women-run team, I was so excited to see my peers, and successful business-women that I look up to, being recognized for all their hard work. As I learned more about Brett and his family, it was clear that this dedication to giving back to the community where he grew up didn’t start and stop on Instagram. Through his successful appointment-only jewelry business, B. Allan Jewelers, Brett has stayed involved in local organizations and nonprofits both personally and professionally. Brett, the “B” in B. Allan Jewelers, was born and raised in Danville where he and his wife, Maureen, raised their 3 boys. Brett coached the boys (and countless other kids) in soccer, basketball, flag football, and baseball. “Hey Coach!” is often heard as he frequents local businesses downtown. What started out as a new business getting involved in the community became the most rewarding part of being a local business owner. A

theme quickly developed in the charities he partnered with: Children. It started with an in-office Holiday Trunk Show in 2003 which launched The Samantha Corpus Foundation. This blossomed into teaming with over 20 children’s charities and schools and helping raise over $780,000. Brett reflects, “These charities have humbled us, inspired us, and filled our hearts with warmth and admiration. Many of their volunteers have become our dearest friends. inally….. fellow Danville residents…. The year 2020 is almost over….. What a year it has been…. While we prepare for this Holiday season, which will be like no other season before,… we realize that the European vacation is most likely off the list, the large gathering of friends and family will have to be cut down in size or eliminated all together….. That our biggest wish is to get our children back to school and that maybe this ‘work from home’ option is better than you had expected. So much has changed since March of 2020. Like you, I didn’t think we would still be

limited in our social activities as much as we are. I figured that once summer arrived, we would see sports and movie theaters and travel destinations open up. The virus is still causing hardship for so many people in multiple ways: economically, physically and mentally we have all been suffering in some way.

The charts for our East Bay Area all show significant activity and increases in home prices since the pause in March. Studies show that as long as we are affected by the current pandemic, homeowners will be moving in order to make their lives at home more comfortable for pandemic living. Whether homeowners (sellers and buyers alike) are moving out of state or just to a home with more space; inside and outside, they will continue to make our town more and more valuable as demand outweighs the supply. Take another little piece of my artichoke heart! By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

uring the holiday season, I can remember my mom often searching for baby artichokes. Fresh, tiny baby artichokes can be hard to come by, and I remember her making special trips to Pezzini Farms in Castroville just to buy them. Once she had them, she would spend hours patiently trimming and cleaning them so that each bite was tender and perfect. She would then roast red bell peppers and steam them in a paper bag to help separate the charred skins. After arranging all her pretty veggies on a platter, she would scatter the dish with handfuls of her grandfather’s house-cured olives and a luscious creamy cheese for a beautiful presentation. Needless to say, there were never leftovers. It was a holiday tradition in my home my whole life, just like it was generations long before. I wish I had my mom’s patience to clean two dozen artichokes for a party, but sadly I don’t. I’ve found that using frozen artichokes is a delicious and less labor intensive alternative to making this very pretty holiday appetizer a new favorite in your home.

Janet’s Antipasti Platter Time: 20-30 minutes Serves: 6-10

For the Dressing

3 Tbs. Red wine vinegar 5 Tbs. Olive oil 2 tsp. Fresh garlic, minced 3 Tbs. Fresh parsley, chopped

Putting it Together

Thaw the artichoke hearts and drain them well on a paper towel. Arrange the artichokes, roasted peppers, olives and cheese on a platter in the style of your choosing and refrigerate until needed. In a small bowl, whisk together all the dressing ingredients until blended well. Pour over the top of the antipasti. Serve with crackers.

Shall We Plant a Tree?

e humans have a special connection with trees. There are numerous studies about the value of trees to our human psyche. They all seem to conclude that being in the presence of trees leads to feelings of peacefulness, tranquility, and even rejuvenation. We plant trees for many reasons: shade, fruit, a natural soft screen from the neighbors or street, a flowering or foliage accent in the landscape, and sometimes to commemorate an important life moment. They reduce pollutants in the air and soil: and provide habitat for birds and other creatures. Trees also reduce storm runoff and soil erosion. The next few months are the proper time to be planting trees and shrubs. Some things to consider: Location

Is there enough space? Some trees simply grow too large for many residential properties. Planting too close to a fence, structure, driveway, or patio can cause problems over the years. Too close to a neighbor can create some issues also. Look up

Avoid planting trees under utility lines. Trees planted under power lines will soon get topped. Will the tree thrive in this area?

Our Mediterranean climate allows us to grow a great variety of trees, but some do adapt better than others. Species

There can be many varieties and cultivars within a species. Some cultivars are more disease prone than others. If you’re planting a tree for shade consider a deciduous species. They provide shade through the hot weather, then allow light and warmth during winter when they drop their leaves.

Fruit Trees

Many fruit trees (other than citrus) are best planted bare root this time of year. Some ornamentals bear fruit which can be messy. Red Leaf Plums, Olives, and Strawberry trees are a few that should be kept away from high-traffic areas. When selecting a tree to purchase, examine the specimen closely. The new buds should be soft and moist. Dry brittle buds are dead and may indicate health problems. Avoid trees with twigs or small branches that are dying back from the tips or have the ends clipped. Also look for lesions or discolored patches on the branches and trunks. Many trees are grafted. Examine the graft union (this will generally be just above the root crown). It should be a clean, barely noticeable line. Reject any that have dead or decayed patches at the graft union. We can grow a great number of non-native species here, but there are some fine natives in this area. California Black Oak is a native that doesn’t get as big as the Valley and Coast live Oaks. The soft pinky colored buds as the leaves begin to open are gorgeous. A native Buckeye also has special beauty in their pale green leaves. There are more natives that can be used to great effect that are often overlooked. Checkout the August issue of Danville Living CA for a great article on native plants and all the good they can accomplish. Do your research, of course. You can always talk with a certified arborist or other trusted landscape professional. Arborists like to talk about trees and will be glad to help you select one or more trees for your property and provide some guidance on placement. After some research and consultation… plant a tree. Enjoy watching it grow and mature but don’t be surprised if it becomes like one of the family.

Danville Girl starts business spreading Gratitude and Kindness during the Holidays By Cienna Lazarus, 5th Grade | Ryan and Natalia Lazarus, Residents since 2010

ienna Lazarus (age 11) created her first business called the Gift of Being Grateful during COVID-19 quarantine to focus on the great things we all have to be grateful for. According to Cienna, “Every night before you go to bed, you take a piece of paper and write down something you’re grateful for. This will help you keep focusing on all of the positive things in your life instead of the negative. Your gratitude box will keep filling up with grateful thoughts and you will realize or be reminded of what an amazing life you have.” This story went viral after she was highlighted on the news in June, seen here - https://www.ktvu.com/news/danville-girl-starts-thegift-of-being-grateful-to-spread-positivity. She has painted and sold almost 300 boxes to people all over the country. She has recently collaborated with Talulah (age 13) and Ruby Finkelstein (age 10) who are the co-creators of the Be Kind movement. Since 2016, they have distributed more than 20,000 of their iconic Be Kind buttons all over the world. They have also created the

“Kindness Kids”, a youth-led group that brings people throughout our community together to organize acts of positivity and compassion. Among their projects: collecting warm coats for those in need, preparing food for those who are hungry, and organizing birthday parties for children without homes. The “Kindness Kids” lead an annual event called the Kindness Day Walk and Celebration, a kiddriven and kid-led event that brings people together to spread and celebrate the power of kindness to strengthen community. ntelope Island is an awesome island in the middle of the Great Salt Lake in Salt Lake City, UT. Even though it is called “antelope” island, we actually saw tons of real life buffalos. We looked and looked for other animals, like antelopes and bighorn sheep, but couldn’t find them. My dad, sister, mom and I hiked up a huge hill so that we could see the giant salt lake. There were campgrounds and some beaches, but we didn’t go down to the water. It was absolutely freezing out there! We drove down a very long road to the bottom of the island. One time we had to stop and let a buffalo cross. The closest we got to a buffalo was when he walked right by our car. Buffalo can be very dangerous, so we stayed in the car and didn’t get any closer.

The inviting atmosphere of the Dublin Ranch Golf Course pairs nicely with the sweeping panoramic views of the Tri-Valley and Mt. Diablo from every shot. The friendly staff and Golf Pro will greet you with a smile whether you are checking in, picking up your golf cart, or touring the facility for an upcoming wedding or golf tournament you would like to have on the Dublin Ranch property. This course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, has 11 par 3’s, 5 par 4’s and two tricky par 5’s. The rolling hills and valleys create a new level of difficulty for the par 63 course. Even along with the difficulty, you can play the course in just shy of 4 hours, which is nice when you want to get your game in on the weekend and still have time for other plans.

The food and beverage cart will pass by several times making sure you have what you need. The Hilltop Café is open for business. They offer freshly BBQ’d Tri-Tip, Chicken Breast Sandwiches, Hotdogs, Hotlinks, Hamburgers, Wraps and Salads. The food is delicious and hearty. There is also a Hilltop Restaurant and Bar. The bar has been relocated outside for the COVID convenience & protocol. Even now, during COVID, The Dublin Ranch Golf Course is a great place to be. The wide open spaces and being on the course give you a feeling of freedom. Getting together with friends is easy to do even while following the COVID protocol. The carts are sanitized, the flag on the green has a lever to get the ball out of the hole without using your hand, and each person has their own cart. It is a perfect getaway, yet just 20 minutes from home.
