Meet the vanZees: Faith and Family By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

hannon and Jesse vanZee have an amazing love story. For Jesse, it was love at first sight: a Sunday night college worship service at Cal Poly made all the more impactful when Shannon walked in the door with a mutual friend. Jesse was able to get the introduction that night, but had to wait a couple weeks until they were at a Christmas party together to really make his impression on her. They spent the whole night talking, right up until they realized they were the last guests and the hosts of the party were ready to turn in for bed! At 1 am, Shannon called her mom and said, “I just met the man I’m going to marry!” Three years of dating and they were ready to take the next step. Jesse proposed with a self-written song at a camp in Santa Cruz, where they both previously worked as counselors. They loved every minute of planning their wedding and their future lives together. About four months before the wedding, Jesse was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in a later stage of progression. After some pretty serious lows, he found a doctor at Stanford who was interested in his case. The school was a site for a trial for a new drug that saved Jesse’s life. He went into remission a year later and has been miraculously living in remission for the last 14 years. “Due to these health issues, having children was not easy for us and required a lot of help from doctors and IVF. We didn’t even know if we would have one child, and God saw it fit to bless us with five!” Their children: Emmerson, Landon, Asher, Luke and Rhett are great kids and the perfect continuation of their love story. Jesse earned his BS at Cal Poly in Biological Sciences. He is a Director at US Cancer Management Corporation, which owns and operates cancer centers in California. Previous to that he was a sales rep for different medical companies. Shannon earned her 8

BS in Recreation, Parks and Tourism. It was Shannon’s degree and subsequent career in event planning that brought the vanZees to the East Bay. Shannon worked for the City of San Ramon planning community events. She then became an event coordinator at Crow Canyon Country Club and eventually the Catering and Events Manager at Il Fornaio in Walnut Creek before deciding to stay home full time. Both Jesse and Shannon are very involved at the kids’ school. Shannon is using all of her skills in event planning for the annual Montair Auction, put on by the Montair Foundation. No doubt it’s going to be a huge success in 2022, raising money for supplemental educational programs and keeping Montair running smoothly! Jesse is the vice-president of the Montair Dads Club. He explains, “We do various projects at the school, such as restoring the aging picnic tables, installing new backpack hooks, and building new gardening boxes this spring for the K-2nd gardening program. We also plan and host various fundraising events, such as our annual bocce ball tournament.” They love their monthly meetings, and who could blame them when the location is the wonderful Auburn Lounge?! Emmerson, 12, is the eldest of the family. She is creative and athletic, balancing her schoolwork with soccer and jewelry making. Not only is Emmerson a talented goalie, FEBRUARY 2022

amazing next-door neighbors that we do playdates, movie nights and game nights with. There are plans to put a gate between our yards for easier access!” Dinners downtown are guaranteed to be filled with running into friends from all around Danville. After living in Concord early in their marriage, the plan was always to move to Danville. They even spent some time commuting from Concord to Danville for preschool, church, and even the gym before moving here for good in 2015. earning the nickname “The Wall” from her coaches and teammates, but she enjoys making bracelets so much that she’s about to start her own Etsy shop! Asher and Landon, 9, are twins. Landon is inquisitive, always trying to figure out how things work. Asher is a master builder with legos. He enjoys the instructed builds and also creating his own models. Both boys play soccer with Mustang and love flag football and video games. Luke, 6, is a fun-loving kid who is often told to “put the couch back together”. And then there’s Rhett, 3, who is the toughest little guy ever! He loves playing with his siblings and all things Mickey Mouse and Paw Patrol. Luckily the vanZees live within walking distance to Hap Magee Park, so the whole family is able to play in the park and enjoy the surrounding scenery. Besides just living by one of the best parks in Danville, Jesse and Shannon love their neighborhood for the people too: “We have

Spending quality time together is number one on the priority list, but often Jesse and Shannon are driving the kids to their various activities. So for Shannon, when everyone had nowhere else to go in 2020 and 2021, she discovered some new interests of her own, “One of my favorite hobbies is taking care of my “plant babies.” I have over 40 plants occupying space in our house. It became an obsession during the pandemic and my collection “grew” exponentially during that time.” The vanZees attend Creekside Community Church in Alamo. Emmerson is active in the middle school youth group, “Elevate,” and everyone tries to help out in the youth ministry programs. Faith is a huge cornerstone of life at the vanZee house. You may have noticed the small-business boom over the last two years – micro-businesses, freelancers and contractors grew by the millions. Small businesses (a business with 200 or fewer employees) account for over 99% of all companies, and micro-businesses make up over twothirds of all businesses in the United States. Micro-businesses employ nine or fewer employees, and 50% of all small businesses are operated from home. A surge of new business filings hit in the last six months of 2020, with over 4.4 million new businesses being created in 2020, and 2021 didn’t show any signs of slowing down. Experts say they contribute more than $1.2 trillion each year to the United States economy.

The pandemic forces many to rethink work. Some people need to work from home, and others need to help with virtual school for their children, while others are simply ready for a change. With so much of our lives, products, services, and purchases online, people have found profitable ways to work with little overhead capital needed and from the comfort of their own homes, providing a service, and giving the flexibility to change course on a moment’s notice. As a result, people of every age and background seek greater autonomy in their careers.

Use Your Interests & Expertise Many people turned their interests into businesses, selling their goods on e-commerce sites and social media platforms. According to Quickbooks Small Business Insights report, nearly 9 out of 10 small businesses (88%) say online sales will be an important source of revenue in 2022. Other entrepreneurs used their years of experience into starting freelancing, providing administrative, consulting, website design, and marketing services to other businesses. Podcasts were among the fastest-growing new businesses in 2020 and 2021 because they require very little upfront investment and can quickly turn profitable.

Solve a Problem Starting a new business may not need a lot of startup capital, depending on what product or service you choose. However, your new business will take attention, care, and effort. If you have the motivation but not yet the idea, try working backward. What is one problem or issue that you can solve for people? For example, if you’ve been making dog treats for your dog that helps alleviate her arthritis, consider producing and selling these canine treats to a broader audience.

Look to the Trends Be ready for both online and traditional in-person sales. Foot traffic – and in-person meetings – will ebb and flow depending on the time of year and the status of the pandemic. According to the National Customer Foot Traffic Report, in-store visits were up in October and November before falling again in December. As a result, your business will need to be prepared for both a robust online and offline presence. Take your cue from the millions of new businesses and learn more about starting one of your own. very day, we see patients in our practice who are stressed. Whether it’s physical, emotional, or chemical stress building up in your body, one thing is certain: too much of it isn’t helping your chronic or acute pain. In fact, it could be making it worse. Stress and pain go hand in hand. When you’re dealing with pain, a certain level of anxiety typically pops up surrounding the injury. When it’s not addressed, pain continues and so does stress. As more pain and more stress builds in the body, it can begin to affect your daily life and activities Here’s a quick look at the cycle of pain: Phase 1: You become limited in certain functions of day-to-day life and leisure activities. Phase 2: Fear builds surrounding the decrease in activities Phase 3: Limitations and less movement can lead to weakened muscles, ultimately causing more pain. This can start the cycle over. To break the cycle and limit the stress you’re experiencing, try these things:

Fuel your body with food that nourishes from the inside out. This means eating whole grains, healthy fats, and limiting sugar and excess carbohydrates. Do some form of exercise for at least 30 minutes each day (unless you’re in severe pain). Exercise lowers the stress hormones in your body over time, and may improve your quality of sleep. Even something as simple as an easy walk can pay large dividends towards providing relief. While intense exercise, if you are able, can help break the fight or flight stress response and induce the rest and digest response. Meditation. Even as little as 5 minutes of mindful meditation has been shown to provide a decrease in stress. Carve out a few minutes during your lunch! Go to Bed. Getting enough sleep is key to helping keep your body healthy and reducing stress. Adults need 7+ hours, Teens 8-10 hours, and kids need 9-12 hours. Visit us. We are here to help! Enhancing Danville’s Downtown Spaces Danville launches public outreach effort for its Downtown Plan Update By Nicola Shihab, Public Information Officer

hile so much has changed in the past few years, one thing has remained the same for Danville’s community - the innate desire to gather in Danville’s well-loved public spaces. The Town has begun the process of updating the Downtown Plan and has partnered with urban design firm SWA to reimagine how it might use some of the public spaces within the downtown to provide essential connection, interaction and engagement. The goal is to create ‘activated’ public spaces that are visually coordinated and balance the need for adequate public parking, drainage facilities, accessibility to all businesses and essential services such as trash pick-up. The Town is seeking community input through a survey that will focus on how businesses and residents envision improvements to Danville’s treasured downtown spaces. The survey is expected to take about five minutes and will be available from January 7 to February 14. Other intercept events will be held around town and at the Danville Farmers’ Market. eau is a loving dog from the beginning to now. He was found in an Oakland alley as a puppy, (He was the size of his head now!) with nine other brothers and sisters without a mom. He is the sweetest dog we’ve ever met without barking or biting, though he looks like he would. While being black, except for a white heart on his chest, he is a rottweiler-pitbull. He is always funny while not trying to be, like this picture below. He is also one of the largest dogs I’ve ever seen. We found Beau at the Dublin SPCA, a place where there are great pets that need homes. He usually barks and howls in his dream! He acts like a cat, like being scared of water and licking himself! He is four years old. We all hope he is going to live so many more years.

Corrine is a very sweet, people friendly Rat Terrier mix. She came to our rescue as an expecting Mom and was an incredible Mom to her tiny puppy Corey who was featured in the January issue. Corrine loves to snuggle and will sit beside you or on your lap. She curls up, slightly sticks her tongue out, and quietly snores. Corrine is a very active 5 year old and loves to run and play with other dogs. She probably won’t do well with cats since her favorite game is to chase them. Corrine loves to be showered with affection and will make you smile at her playful antics.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.

TVAR gives deserving animals another chance by taking them into foster care. All TVAR dogs live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting--allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating just short of 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

Hera arrived at the East County Animal Shelter where she gave birth to five beautiful kittens. Hera and her babies enjoyed living in their foster home where she was able to safely and happily feed and care for her babies until they were weaned and adopted. Hera was a great mom caring for her babies and sharing her food bowl when they were ready to eat food. Hera likes being around people, playing with small toys,

All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public.

Exhibition dates: January 20 - March 11, 2022 The Town of Danville’s Village Theatre Art Gallery is pleased to welcome the new year with a new exhibition: Threads of Change. The new exhibit showcases unique art quilts by members of the local quilting group, Creative Fiber Artists. Creative Fiber Artists exhibited their work at the Village Theatre Art Gallery in 2017 and have been busy creating more art quilts for this latest exhibit. The art quilts are about more than just textiles and sewing. The artists employ a variety of techniques and materials, resulting in beautiful and original works of art. The quilts feature screen printing, dye painting, mono-printing, and more, to create layers and depth. These imaginative works are intricate and fun and depict stunning scenery, still-lifes, and animal imagery.

An opening reception for Threads of Change will be held on Thursday, January 20, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. COVID-19 safety guidelines will be in effect, and all visitors must wear masks in the gallery. As always, the reception is free and open to the public. The Village Theatre Art Gallery is currently open to visitors Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 12:00 p.m-5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All other days by appointment only. What’s love got to do with it? By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

ina Turner may have got it right. February, the month known for Valentine’s Day, is the most symbolic month for love. Candy shops explode in their highest sales, and florists can’t keep up with the demand for roses. The irony is that between the months of January through March, the divorce rate spikes in the United States. For those who feel the need for a partner to be complete in this month, February may also be the loneliest month of the year. The American author Bell Hooks wrote: “Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape.” I would like to reframe February and offer a challenge - to welcome the opportunities to build a relationship with yourself. Too often when a relationship fails, it is natural to begin dating again, and even marry again. We often confuse being lonely with being alone. Avoiding ourselves, even running from ourselves, is not unusual. However, here is the reality: While the rate of divorce in first marriages is 40%-50%,

second marriage statistics show this increases to 67% for failed second marriages and a whopping 75% for third marriages. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the rate of divorce increases in relation to the number of marriages. When it comes to a happy union, the third time clearly isn’t a charm. As a counselor and Life Coach, and through my own career and personal transitions, I found that I needed to have a relationship with myself first before finding meaningful love with someone else. In the process of self recognition, I rediscovered who I left on the table a long time ago. I had to resurrect myself back to complete what fulfills happiness for me. What would February look like if you made a commitment to love yourself first? What do you need to rediscover all your capabilities and passions? Take yourself out for a date. Create alone time to revisit your own internal strengths and dreams. Whether you are in a relationship or not, this new outlook can be a cleanser to refresh the beauty of you and strengthen your relationship with others. ooking ahead, we wonder what this year will bring. Many of us feel optimistic about the future. Our housing market was the strongest ever in the last 18 months. The experts are forecasting a continued strong housing market but with a few differences. Interest rates are expected to tick upwards (already the 30-year mortgage has increased over 50 basis points in the last 12 months) and this rate hike will always tend to slow down a seller’s market. But, with inventory of homes expected to increase only slightly over last year, the housing market will remain strong. We can’t expect the appreciation values to continue at the same rate as in the past year; but a more normalized market will be a good thing.

Wind driven rain and your Home Insurance By William White, All State Insurance

We need the rain but…

The combination of a high wind with rain is like pointing a garden hose on full blast at a window or door. Water is insidious and will find a way into the interior. The question is whether (no pun intended) your home insurance covers wind as the proximate cause of loss and the resulting seepage of the water. Our homes locally are built to withstand the element of heat so that air can flow and allow the home to breathe. We lived in Ohio for a few years and the element builders worked against there was the cold weather. You can tell that building style because when you try to close a door there is a “cushion” of air that makes you force the door shut, where in California in most areas a door can swing shut easily. The good news is that an unnaturally high wind doesn’t occur frequently and a small amount of water can be dried up to save a rug or wooden floor. Insurance may not cover water damage if

there is no external damage to the house, however if a tree limb damages the roof and water gets in, that is an easy claim. It’s just not always that clear.

What to do?

Be prepared: a heavy downpour can overwhelm drains and gutters on your roof. Leaves and debris can build up and cause an overflow especially in rain gutters that can then run down an inside wall in your home. *Remember there is a deductible too. The remedy is simple. Clean your roof and gutters frequently (according to the number of trees nearby). Check the weather stripping on your windows and doors, avoid lost money and time by being prepared and then pray for more rain!
