Hey Neighbors! We’ve done it! 2021 is in the rearview mirror. Welcome to 2022! As the saying goes, “the days are long but the years are short” - and that feels so, so true during these long winter days. Although, much like our cover family, I will forever be grateful to live in a place where the sun still shines during winter and the ground isn’t covered in snow! Danville Living CA is kicking off the year with Bill and Julie Lapp and their daughter, Addison. This energetic family keeps busy by staying involved in not only our community here in Danville, but down in Paso Robles too, where they own a vineyard and a winery. Bill is a talented writer himself, and I hope you’ll follow the links included in their story to check out an even wider peek into their life! If you have a story to share or know a neighbor that you would love to see on our cover, please send me an email at asullivan@bestversionmedia.com. We welcome all families, couples, or individuals - the only requirement is that our feature family live on the west side. So send your neighbors and friends my way! I can’t wait to meet them!

Meet the Lapp Family: Off the Vine By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017
M
ost of us walked a very similar path… high school, college, job… but what happens when you make a new course for yourself? In the case of Bill Lapp, anything can happen! New adventures, amazing experiences, and at the end of the day, lots to look back and be proud of! That unconventional path for Bill started when he dropped out of high school in his small hometown in Maine, moved out on his own, and began working in auto collision repair. “After realizing that I have a complete lack of hand eye coordination and had ruined one too many cars I re-enrolled in school.” That, perhaps a moment-too-late-for-unsuspecting-vehicleowners-realization led Bill to re-enroll in school and go on to Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he earned his BS and MS in
Computer Science. He continued his adventurous path with a job in the South Pacific with MIT, where he was “responsible for tracking and shooting down nuclear missiles.” Ready to move on from that eye-opening experience, Bill returned stateside where he received his MBA from Babson College. He “spent 15 years doing software development, crisis management and pre-sales in the big data, unified communications, security, and networking industries across international, government, education, large enterprise and startup environments.” Bill is currently leading the global Solution Architecture organization at Zscaler. Bill was kind enough to share a very cool story about ringing the opening bell at Nasdaq with his company and you can read it at: https://sethoughts.com/2018/03/19/ what-is-it-like-to-ring-the-opening-bell-at-nasdaq-and-ipo/ Surely Bill would say the thing he is most proud of is his 8 year marriage to Danville native, Julie Lapp and their beautiful 6-almost-7-year-old daughter, Addison. Bill and Julie met while they were both living in San Francisco: Julie lived in Cow Hollow and Bill lived on a boat off of Pier 39. His infectious personality quickly won her over and they said their “I do’s” at Dawn Ranch Lodge in Guerneville in the summer of 2013.

JANUARY 2022
The Lapp family lives by the phrase, “Learn by doing!” Julie grew up attending Green Valley Elementary, Los Cerros Middle School and Monte Vista High School. She went on to UCLA to study psychology and became a member of Alpha Phi sorority. After earning her Masters of Social Welfare at UCLA she then enrolled at Chapman University where she earned her Masters of Counseling. In 2003, while Julie was still living in San Francisco, she started working at Pine Valley Middle School as a Counselor. It’s where she still happily works today. Julie is also very involved in Addison’s school, volunteering her time when she can and serving as the secretary of the PTA. Addison attends Montair Elementary. She loves her teacher, Miss Fischer, and playing with her friends everyday. Each season brings a different activity for her: she does tumbling at Nor Cal All Stars, dances at Next Step Dance Studio and softball with the San Ramon Valley Girls Athletic League. In 2019 the Lapp family joined Diablo Country Club, where Addison is on the swim team. Bill and Julie joined the Sunday Bocce League there. With his New England upbringing, it should come as no surprise that Bill is a huge Patriots fan! While holding down their full-time jobs, Bill and Julie are also the proud owners of a beautiful vineyard and one of the most historic wineries in Paso Robles, CA. The Lapps purchased Hollyhock Vineyards in 2015 as a way to increase their real estate portfolio and run an Airbnb in one of their favorite regions. These world travelers know wines and know beautiful places, so if they say Paso Robles is the place to be, that’s a stamp of approval for the rest of us! Addison was just a few months old when the property was purchased, and has been able to grow up with the vines. Now the Lapps have their own wine label coming out of Hollyhock. In 2020, Bill had another “crazy” idea - purchasing the historic Rotta Winery. Through much deliberation with Julie and other trusted family friends in the business, Bill was able to see a diamond in the rough and has big plans to get Rotta Winery back on the map! Although the last year has been filled plenty of downs (needing to replant 75% of their vines for starters and Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses
Gizmo the Ragdoll cat, otherwise known as a “puppy cat” because of his affinity for following the family all around the house! He turns two this April. having to rip out a 351 year old Oak tree), the promise of adventure, excitement, and memories with their family and friends is going to be the centerpiece of their winery and they hope you will join them for the ride! Bill runs a fantastic blog about their entertaining and educational experiences here: https://hollyhockvineyard.com/blog/ Both Julie and Bill are very passionate about giving back to others and teaching Addison the importance of building community. They joined Impact Diablo Valley in 2019 so that the whole family could “get involved with local non-profits.” Other causes they enjoy supporting are Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area, City of Hope and Must! Charities of Paso Robles. Julie says, “We also have created scholarships at WPI and Cal Poly. The WPI one is focused on transfer students, an underserved cohort that Bill belonged to. The Cal Poly one is focused on supporting the Cal Poly motto, ‘learn by doing’ for their wine and viticulture program.” Bill is still so grateful to live in an area that doesn’t snow. And although Julie hadn’t planned on moving back to Danville, she is so glad they did and loves her lifelong friendships that are now expanding into the next generation. With pizza, pool parties, and plenty of neighborly goodwill, they love being able to say hi to all their neighbors whenever the family is enjoying some time outside. After learning all about the intense, winding, truly inspiring roads Bill and Julie have taken to get here, it’s not surprising that when asked about their family motto, it goes as such: “Get [it] done, learn by doing, jump right in, and do the right thing.” Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? Frisbee
By Cole Kuiper, ARF
Miles
Looking for a furry friend during this trying time? If you see an animal you’re interested in on our website, just fill out an online inquiry form. Once your inquiry has been received, you will be added to our virtual adoption queue.
One-year-old Frisbee is a lot of fun and enjoys romping around and playing with people and doggie friends. This pup will learn quickly by using yummy treats. He enjoys his playtime with people and loves a good romp with one of his dog friends. In fact, we recommend that Frisbee goes to a home with another dog to help expend his energy. Frisbee currently weighs 52 pounds.
Meet your forever friend at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, 2890 Mitchell Drive, Walnut Creek, during adoption hours: Noon to 6 pm Wednesday & Thursday, Noon to 7 pm Friday, and Noon to 6 pm Saturday & Sunday. Would you like to be part of the heroic team that saves the lives of rescued dogs and cats? Can you share your talents to connect people and animals? ARF volunteers are making a difference! For more information see our website, www.arflife.org, or call (925) 256-1ARF.

Miles will make a great companion for just about anyone! Plus, his adoption fee has already been prepaid by a generous admirer. ARF Adoption fees: $100 for an adult cat, $150 for a kitten (<6 months), $150 for two adult cats, $250 for two kittens, $50 for a special-needs cat, $75 for a special-needs kitten (<6 months), and $50 for a senior cat (7+ years).

Corey - Dog Program At T var
Corey is our little miracle puppy. His mom, Corrine, came to our rescue expecting to deliver puppies very soon. On September 15, 2021, Corrine delivered two puppies. The first very large puppy was a breech birth and even with the valiant efforts of Vets & staff, didn’t survive. Corey was the only other puppy and a heartbeat couldn’t be felt. It was decided to allow Corrine to try naturally giving birth. Much to our amazement and joy, Corey was born alive. After extra medical attention and monitoring, Corrine and Corey came back to their foster home for continued observation. There were a lot of touch and go moments, however our determined little boy slowly showed signs of improvement. Now, at almost 3 months old he only weighs 2.13 lbs. But please don’t let his small size fool you; he’s a very determined puppy and loves to drag toys bigger than himself all around the house.
All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. Foster families get to know each animal’s personality and needs in a home setting allowing TVAR to find the right match so kittens, puppies, dogs and cats - and adopters - thrive! We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter caring for and socializing the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens, and helping them find new forever homes as we did with Opie. For more information see our website: www.tvar.org
TVAR gives deserving animals another chance by taking them into foster care. All TVAR dogs live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting- allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!
Jack Frost - Kitten Program At T var
Meet Jack Frost who is 4 months old. He is the perfect kitten for a family looking for a gentle and confident lap kitten. He is a cuddle bug and fun to play with as well as a great playmate to his fosters young grandchildren. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.
Tri-Valley Animal R escue (T var) Giving Them Another Chance
TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating just short of 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

Lights Go:
The Selfishness and Generosity of Dance By Paul Henderson w/ Halle Henderson, Tiffany’s Dance Academy of Danville
I
am alone on a silent, dark stage with the heavy red curtain in front of me. I wipe my clammy hands on my yellow dress, exhale slowly, and plead with my terrified self to relax. The makeup artist has spent 15 minutes making my lips bright red. I am a dance artist. As such, I am analytical, obedient, athletic, and loyal. My ability to focus on my own performance requires my selfishness; dancing with others requires my generosity. My dancer brain has spent thousands of hours counting, memorizing patterns, and moving my body through space and time. Thinking. Remembering. Moving. Counting. Preparing for this moment since the age of three.
Halle Henderson dancing as Clara in The Nutcracker
I dance as part of a school of fish, a flock of birds, whizzing around, darting here and there, never bumping into one another. A barely audible monotone cue. Stage left, “Places.” “Oh my god.” I whisper to myself. Another savorless cue, “Standby”. I try to smile for real. Impossible. “Curtain go”. The sound of a curtain rising is the most terrifying, exhilarating noise. It is not really a noise. It is a feeling. Two atmospheres collide. The air pressure and temperature changes. A breeze tickles my bare legs and

neck. The audience becomes still. I feel their anticipation. I feel their gaze. I am alone out there in the black quiet. But I am in a soldout, cavernous theater - packed with a living, breathing, demanding audience. I feel alone. But I am the opposite of alone. Having focused so much attention on myself for years, I feel selfish for being up there alone. But all I want to do is give the best performance of my life.
To move the audience is my one and only purpose. It is my gift to them. My reward is their thunderous validation. I feel selfish and silly for wanting, and needing, their applause. It is hard work to move an audience, I justify. Another cue, “Music go”. I exhale. The audience inhales. “Oh my god.” “Lights go.”

s I’m writing this, my wife and son have just arrived to compete in the AKC National Dog Show held in Orlando,Florida. My boy, Justice Helton, and his Grand Champion Bitch, Larcan’s Bailey’s on Ice, finished 2nd in the nation for Owner Handler last year. My wife and her baby, Larcan’s Meritage Mele, finished 4th in the Nation. We chose to only travel with one this time. We have a couple of Lagotto Romagnolos, also known as the truffle dogs. I’m super stoked for their weekend ahead. It’s about the journey not the destination. Though they do perform in the ring, they’re loved family pets at the same time. Anyways I hope you all have had a great Holiday season and an even better New Year ahead.

Getting Ready for Spring Ball Already… By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017
D
anville Little League looks back at an All Star filled summer and prepares for a successful season ahead which will mark its 50-year anniversary. Games at Osage Park will be here before you know it and Danville Little League is proud to host the game of baseball for youth in Danville. Last year, the League had a registration of over 600 youth, ranging in ages 5 to 16 years old. Despite the uncertainty of COVID, DLL ran a normal regular season, capped off with playoffs and the following teams winning a Division trophy (Majors: Cardinals, AAA: Padres, AA: Brewers, A: Sullivan - Athletics). Summer brought even more highs for the Danville Little League organization and its surrounding community. The League competed in All Star tournaments around Northern California and staffed 5 All-Star teams and 3 District All Star teams. A major headline from the summer was our 11-year District All Star team who took NorCal by storm. A close group of boys who had been playing sports together for several years worked tirelessly practicing 5 to 6 times a week preparing for the All-Star season ahead. Their dedication proved successful as they won the District 57 Championship in a hard-fought battle versus Granada in late June 2021 and qualified to compete in the Northern California Sectionals. This team coached by Corey Fitzgibbon, Mike Jones and Troy Croghan was motivated to win and with great pitching, consistent defense and powerful hitting at the plate, they continued their summer baseball journey by winning the Sectionals, held in Danville, versus a very talented San Mateo team. Holding their Sectionals banner with pride, they redirected their focus to the final stop on their summer adventure; Northern California State Championships, where they would face teams from all over the state. Late July 2021 was spent commuting back and forth from Turlock where they faced Land Park (Sacramento), Los Gatos, and in the championship game Rincon Valley (Santa Rosa). On the evening of July 30th, the 11-year-old DLL District All Stars defeated Rincon Valley with a score of 7-2. Our All-Star team contributed 10 hits, threw 11 strike outs against Rincon players, and held them to only two hits which resulted in a win. Overall, the 11-year-old District All Stars posted a summer record 16-4!
Colton Sullivan, CJ Peterson, Colin Schmiegel, Kolten Croghan, Carter Spatz, Michael Jones, Evan Hirst, Colton Fitzgibbon, Cavan Moylan, yT ler Costello, Chase Botsford, Charlie ’H O agan
Danville Little League can also tip their caps to the talented 12-yearold District All Stars who competed fearlessly throughout the early summer and walked away with a victory over Tassajara Valley for the District 57 title and banner. In the upcoming season, our League looks forward to creating new baseball memories and developing the love of baseball in our local youth. We encourage the community to come out and watch local games, celebrate the 50th year anniversary and as always, would welcome corporate sponsors to help make our fields and programs even better.

Resolutions 2022: Let’s Make This Year Count By Christina Dalton, EYH Life Coach
I
t is January 2022. And like January 2021, January 2020, January 2019… parking at the gym is impossible. Why? We all know the answer… New Year’s Resolutions. As a year-round tennis player, I have witnessed this pattern every year for as long as I have been a member of the gym. By February, parking becomes a little easier. When March rolls in, there are a multitude of parking spaces. New Year’s resolutions are fabulous if we have a concrete plan and the support needed to achieve the desired goals. Unfortunately, most people, while with good intentions, choose to do this journey by themselves and without the needed structure and accountability to be successful. We envision New Year’s resolutions as an opportunity to improve our lives - to create and achieve who we want to be. The resolutions can be anything from weight loss and becoming more fit, to new relationships or controlling finances. In reality, what we really want is more joy in our lives. This joy may mean recognizing what was fun and made us happy, finding love again, exploring a new career or just recognizing that we have the capability of being our best selves. What is needed to make 2022 impactful? How do you make this New Year’s resolution be a part of you? Foremost, how do you recognize that you are the one in the driver’s seat? You are the one in control. May I make a few suggestions for success in your goals for 2022? First, define your goals and passions as completely as possible. If you aren’t sure what you may need to move forward to be your best self, maybe it is time to partner with a Life Coach to ignite your passions and opportunities. A certified life coach can empower you to define your passions and to organize your priorities. Oftentimes, we set goals to please others. Recognize if these are valuable goals for you. When you have done that, it’s time
to investigate the barriers that exist from making this positive change. What are the various limitations to keep you from achieving these goals? In January, we take our first breath of the new year energized to achieve change. Then why do we fade from our personal goals back to the habits we do not love? For most people, the goal has not been thought out and broken into parts so that success is much more manageable. Another area that is critical is WHO is holding YOU ACCOUNTABLE to SUCCESS of your GOALS? Having a partner to navigate with you to achieve your aspirations and to recognize your successes can make the difference for a fulfilling 2022. A Life Coach partners with you to set up your smart goals. Your Coaching professional formulates with you Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Bound (S.M.A.R.T) goals that help ensure that the goals are attainable and can be achieved in a reasonable time frame. If you relate to this article, I invite you to partake in a complimentary session with one of our EYH Life Coach professionals who can partner with you to plan and to accomplish your 2022 resolutions. A happy life consists of mastering your full potential and that means achieving the goals you set for yourself. Our staff coaches the total you to maximize your best in 2022. Happy New Year!
Christina Dalton is the Principal of EYH Life Coach. She applies her own personal and career transitions along with several degrees and credentials to provide insight and knowledge into the coaching experience. Christina handpicks her staff, all of whom are ICF credentialed and have unique experiences to create invaluable coaching sessions.

New Year, New You By Dr. Stephen J. Ronan, MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa
E
ach month we perform many cosmetic surgery procedures here at Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa. These include breast lifts, augmentations and reductions, face lifts, neck lifts, tummy tucks and mommy makeovers, liposuction, and a rapidly increasing number of hair transplants. We also offer and perform a wide variety of non-surgical procedures that can enhance your overall appearance. This month I want to highlight four of our non-surgical treatment options.
Skin Rejuvination with the Fraxis PRO Laser
Fraxis PRO is a new, state-of-the-art technology that features a fractional CO2 laser and RF microneedling all in one platform. With a single treatment you can refresh, refine, and revive your skin…and successfully address sun damage, scars, acne, fine lines and wrinkles. During the 20-30 minute treatment, you typically feel slight tingling while the micro-sized needles gently penetrate the skin and deliver heat to stimulate collagen production. No dressings are required, there is no downtime after the treatment. Patients typically see significant improvements after one treatment, but 2-3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is recommended to achieve optimal results.
Fat Reduction with CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting is the name of a product that was invented to safely freeze off stubborn fat from various areas of the body. This fat freezing method is also known as “cryolipolysis”. CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared procedure that requires no downtime, and is a good treatment option for both women and men alike. On the day of your procedure a highly trained practitioner will placesone or more CoolSculpting pads on the target areas. The pads typically remain in place for around 30-45 minutes, during which time up to 20% of the fat cells in this targeted area will be destroyed. And once those fat cells are gone and eliminated by your body, they are gone for good!
Cellulite Reduction with QWO
QWO is an exciting new, non-surgical treatment plan for cellulite in women. There are typically three things that cause cellulite’s distinct dimples: over time, your skin thins, fat cells enlarge and push against the skin, and the fibrous bands under the skin’s surface thicken and cause tension. QWO is made from enzymes called collagenases. When injected, these enzymes target and break down the fibrous bands under the skin. Once the tension in the bands is released, fat cells are redistributed to help smooth out surface dimples. It is only FDA-approved injectable for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite, and we were one of the first practices in the Bay Area to offer this exciting new treatment.
Non-Surgical Hair Restoration
As an extension to our cosmetic surgery practice, we now have a dedicated Blackhawk Hair Restoration Center that specializes offering both men and women a variety of surgical and nonsurgical treatment options depending on what stage and type of hair loss they are experiencing. One very popular offering is our no-cost, no-obligation consultation and high-definition diagnostic hair analysis. We have also developed a unique Blackhawk HairMAXX protocol (medical microneedling) and a platelet-rich plasma hair growth therapy (PRP) that has helped many of our patients achieve their hair restoration goals without the need for hair transplant surgery. If you are interested in learning more about any of these or other procedures, please call us at 925-736-5757 to schedule a free consultation. And from all of us here at Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, HAPPY NEW YEAR! We look forward to hearing from you… and potentially helping sculpt a new you!

ctober 2016 was a big month for the Whirlow family! We brought home a puppy! I wanted to name him “Bugs” but that didn’t work out. Instead, my parents named him Emmitt after a famous Dallas Cowboy, Emmitt Smith. Emmitt is a typical Basset Hound, stubborn. If he catches a scent or sees a squirrel, he all of a sudden has no interest in anything else. He’s a bit silly. Sometimes we will catch him rolling around on his back, swinging back and forth, and making little growling sounds. When playing fetch, he’s good at it until he doesn’t want to play anymore and then he will just sit and howl. When it’s time for dinner, he’ll let you know. Every day, at 5 o’clock (exactly 5 o’clock) he will start howling at my mom to remind her that it’s time to eat. Emmitt is a sweet boy. He wants to be petted and played with by all. He will be best buds with a stranger. He responds greatly to “dinner” and “walk”. This 5-year-old (human years) does have a strong nose and can sniff out anything. If I don’t finish my lunch at school and leave my backpack anywhere within his reach, he will find it and try to get to it. Emmitt has been known to steal some of my dinner when I’m not looking or one time even a full plate of snickerdoodles. He seems to always be hungry. In fact, if you ask him if he’s “hungry” or if he wants “dinner”, he will howl at you until you feed him. Even though he has a dog bed upstairs and downstairs, we often find him in either my bed or my parent’s bed, even though he’s not supposed to. He can be a troublemaker but how could you not forgive such a cute face!? Emmitt and Emmy Now

When is the right time to switch banks? ByMargiePerry,SVP/ChiefExperienceOfficer,CommunityBankoftheBay,DanvilleBranch
H
i, my name is Margie Perry, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Community Bank of the Bay.
Switching banks is not always top of mind for businesses. Between operations, payroll, and the myriad other tasks, running a business doesn’t allow for a lot of extra time. So, we tend to stay with what is familiar. But is your bank truly serving your needs? Can you pick up the phone and speak with someone who knows your name, or is the automated “personalization” you receive in texts and emails as good as it gets? Many business owners realize their bank is not just a place to keep their money, but an extension of their business and their values. Small business owners need a bank that works with them, not against them. When you work with a local community bank, you get all the features of a big bank with the benefit of regional expertise, local decision making, while strengthening the economy where you live and do business. With the new year approaching, this may be the perfect time to research the best fitting bank for your business needs. Be prepared to do a deep dive into any bank you are thinking of banking with, and consider the following before opening a new account.
where you are banking. Small businesses shouldn’t be struggling to compete for access to their banking partners, and it’s time to set a new standard for how banks should be operating with small businesses. If you are looking for a more personalized approach with a bank that more closely aligns with your values, we welcome you to learn more about Community Bank of the Bay at www. bankcbb.com.
Bank Local
Where you save your money matters, banking at a local community bank means your funds are invested in your community, through local decisions, by local people, for the entire community’s success. The community relationships built and maintained by community banks result in a faster and more straightforward approach for local businesses and nonprofits.
Customer Service
Walking into your home bank location and being greeted by name deserves to be the standard. You should feel comfortable talking with your banking partners about anything related to your accounts. Does going to the bank feel like a chore? Do you have to wait in long lines? And does your lender make you feel at ease? Believe it or not, personable, friendly, customer-oriented service definitely exists. It’s part of the reason why Community Bank of the Bay has a Chief Customer Experience Officer–because customer service is one of our highest priorities.
Technology
Most big banks offer online banking, mobile check deposits, easy bill pay, and a network of ATMs. But are you able to connect with a local representative? As a local client-focused bank, we’re delighted to say we offer both online and mobile banking at your fingertips, merchant services, business cash management. Plus, you won’t get caught in an automated loop or have to search for a secret number to talk to a real person. One of our teammates will always answer during business hours. If your current bank isn’t offering some of the above services, or you feel you could be served better elsewhere, it’s time to rethink

And a Healthy New Year By Dr. Jesse Call, Sycamore Valley Chiropractic
E
very year we do it. We make health related goals that we are going to start on January 1st. Here are 4 simple recommendations to help make your health goals stick
direction are more beneficial than letting kale and brussel sprouts rot in your fridge because your new eating style calls for them. By taking small steps and setting yourself up for success you are less likely to fall off the wagon.
• Make the goal simple, but also clear: Losing weight, eating better or exercising more seem like great goals, and they are, but they are vague and lack substance. You are better served having a clear simple goal in mind. Run a specific 5k, eat 1 more serving of vegetables at every meal, or fit into your old jeans. Giving yourself a clear goal makes it more difficult to rationalize your way out of them.
• Have accountability: The person you lie to the most is yourself, so why keep yourself as the only person who knows or cares about your health goals? Rather, you will find success by having a person whom you are accountable to. Sometimes a little guilt that someone will find out helps you to make the right decision.
• Set yourself up for success: Take the time to set yourself up for success. Small steps in the right

should try your best to keep your goals, but acting as if failure is not an option only sets you up for failure in this case. Improving your health is not an instantaneous event. Rather it is a journey that has hills and valleys. Enjoy the high moments and strive for them, but don’t quit because you slipped a little. Health goals do not have to be about weight, exercise or food. You are a complex entity with many different aspects to your health. Take time to refresh your mind, body and spirit. Cross Country Mortgage
focuses on helping people finance their dreams By Kara Navolio
T
odd Galde of CrossCountry Mortgage believes that home financing begins with education and advice, mixed with total transparency and some of the best rates in town. For over 20 years he has been helping people buy homes and finance big dreams. “I get my biggest enjoyment from working with new first time home buyers or anyone seeking home financing who wants straightforward answers to their complicated questions,” says Todd. “I try to keep things simple, like the ABC’s of Home Financing: Assets, Budget and Credit. I learned to simplify the focus of my business through the Hedgehog Concept by Jim Collins (an author with books on business success and leadership), focusing on the needs of my clients and adding value any way I can.” Todd’s father started the business in 1979, and Todd is proud to continue the legacy. As a top loan originator in California who has served thousands of families, he has learned how to help a variety of different borrowers with different income sources. “If you have a challenging situation, please bring it to me,” he adds. “My years of experience and deep knowledge of loan programs allow me to think outside the box.” Todd and his family live in Danville. He’s been married for over 29 years to Stacey, and they have three children, two big dogs and a Russian tortoise who hibernates three months out of the year in her own special habitat in their backyard. Todd lives by the philosophy espoused by Andy Dufresne in the Shawshank Redemption: “Get busy living or get busy dying.” He’s ready to help borrowers get busy living their dreams with a free consultation regarding their goals. He’s proud to offer great client service and a loan that closes quickly. You can reach him at 925381-8190 or Todd.Galde@myccmortgage.com.

Cooking Corner
Chilly?... Have chili!
By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010
I
t’s chili weather! It’s one of the few things about winter that I look forward to. What’s better than a warm flavorful bowl of beefy chili on a cold January day? Not much. Not only is this recipe great on its own, it’s even better the next day in a bread bowl. But if I’m being real honest, this chili is best suited on a bun with a grilled sausage for an epic chili dog. If your looking to impress your Sunday night football friends, then look no further. The best part of this dish is that it’s pretty hands off. You can set it and forget it.
Beefy Beer Chili You will need • • • • • • • • • •
2 LB ground beef (80/20 fat if you have the choice) 3 TBS Olive oil, divided 1 yellow onion, diced 1 -10oz Can Rotel tomatoes 1-8oz Can tomato sauce 1 can lager beer, room temp 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 TBS Chili powder 1/2 TBS Cumin Salt and pepper
Putting it together
Brown the beef in 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a soup pot or heavy Dutch oven. This should take 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the beef with a slotted spoon and drain the fat from the pot. Add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and sauté the onions until soft, about five minutes. Then add back in the cooked beef, garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper. Slowly stir in the beer, tomatoes and tomato sauce. Bring the chili to a simmer and cover it with a lid and cook for one hour.
May your home be filled with joy, love, and laughter this holiday season. A very special Thank You to all of my clients who supported my business this year. MARY BONHAM

Why Preplanning Is Important for All Bay Area Families
By Robert A. Gordon Jr., President & CEO of Cypress Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Resident since 2017
A
s we begin a new year, many of us are thinking ahead and creating plans for the future.
when they realize the planning is already done for them, allowing them to focus on healing during an already difficult time.
Some of us set long-term goals, such as going back to school or landing a promotion, and others set short-term goals like losing weight or starting an exercise routine.
Our staff members can meet with you and your family when it’s most convenient for you. We even offer virtual meetings, so you don’t have to leave the comfort of home to put your arrangements in place.
But what if I told you that there is something you can do right now — at no cost — that would help your family’s well-being? Preplanning your end-of-life arrangements with our caring team of professionals at Cypress Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park allows you this opportunity. I know many of us would prefer to avoid talking about the end of life, but ultimately, the end of life is an inevitable part of our journey. If you take time to put your preferences into writing now, you will save your loved ones from unnecessary stress worrying about what you would have wanted. Throughout my time in this profession, I’ve seen time and time again how much of a difference preplanning makes for families. I’ve watched firsthand as relief washes over a family member’s face
Preplanning gives your loved ones the ultimate gift — peace of mind. If you’re not sure where to start, we’re ready to answer all your questions and walk with you every step of the way. You can put your trust in us because we’ve been caring for Bay Area families for over 100 years. Hoping to Buy Before You Have to Sell? By W. Todd Galde, CrossCountry Mortgage, LLC
Y
ou’re standing by the window, staring into the yard as you sip a warm cup of tea. Smiling to yourself, you think of all the beautiful memories you’ve created with your kids and loved ones over the years. As you reminisce, you find things feel different in your house: a little quieter, a bit larger, and your children have grown and moved out. Is downsizing a good idea at this point in life? Maybe you’ve considered purchasing a smaller property, but the thought of buying before selling feels overwhelming. In that case, we have a fast and easy solution to buy your next home before having to list your current abode!
Unlike traditional mortgages, the NINE Loan allows you to stay in your current home while buying a new one. Benefits of this approach to homebuying include being able to: • • • •
Introducing The NINE Loan
Compete and win with a stronger purchase position by making a non-contingent offer on your next home. Qualify for home financing without income documentation or employment verification even if you’re retired, between jobs, or self-employed with low verifiable income. Obtain a mortgage with a 25% down payment or your existing home’s equity, sufficient post-closing reserves, and a minimum 660 credit score. Take your time to prepare your existing property for market on your own schedule. This reduces the inconveniences of living in your home while it’s for sale. Close on your new home, move in, and then have your agent sell your vacant and fully staged existing property for maximum value after you have moved out.
The NINE Loan can meet unique circumstances because it does not have income or employment requirements. Instead, your full financial profile is the key to financing.

To qualify, you need:

Ring in the New Year with a New Look! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza
H
appy New Year from our family to yours! This is the perfect time to kick off the New Year by re-doing the ring you wear and enjoy daily. Resetting your diamond is a great way to get a whole new look. Whether you have a pear-shape, marquise or a classic round brilliant diamond, we at Padis Jewelry can show you the hottest new styles that you will be sure to love. There are endless reasons as to why you would want to re-set your center diamond into a new mounting. Tired of your old setting, not happy with the quality of the ring, the ring was not a design you truly wanted, or you perhaps fell head over heels with a design you saw on Padis Jewelry’s Instagram account? We’re here to help! When updating a ring or remounting your center diamond, there is always the question: well what can I do with my old mounting (setting)?! There are a number of different options, some naturally more costeffective than others.
Still love your ring the way it is? Stop by for a complimentary cleaning service. You’d be surprised at what it can do! Whatever you choose, your rings should be always reflection of your love and spark memories of the moments shared throughout your life. Our team at Padis Jewelry is happy to assist you in any way. Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, give us a call or shoot us an email at 415-861-5388 or Concierge@padisjewelry.com.
The first option is to keep it! Some of us like to plan ahead and think in terms of taking care of those we love, so keeping your old mounting to make a gift for a loved one, or helping your soon to be son-in-law marry your daughter, is one sentimental option. You can set a complimentary cubic zirconia in it and keep it as a travel ring for vacations. The next option is to have it set with a colored gemstone. Sapphires, emeralds, and amethysts can turn your old mounting into a beautiful, colored-stone ring. This will allow you to keep your ring which may hold sentimental value and wear it as an alternative to your new engagement ring. Remember, no matter the shape of your diamond, it can be remounted into a beautiful new setting. It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Padis Jewelry can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options.
