Meet the

Call Family Full House, Full Hearts

he Call family began in a public speaking class in early 2010 when Maggie arrived five minutes late to class. “Even to this day, always a little behind, but worth the wait,” Elliott, a Danville native, jokes. “I remember thinking to myself- green eyes, olive skin and well spoken, I’m in! It’s one of those catalyst moments that changes your life, and you had no idea it was coming.” Unfortunately, despite Elliott’s best efforts, Maggie was in a long term relationship with her high school sweetheart, so their paths did not cross for another two years until his first year of medical school. “I was lonely to say the least. In the basement of the library in the middle of Texas, my nose half buried in a physiology book, I received an email,” Elliott states. A month after her breakup with her long term boyfriend, a group of friends dared Maggie to message Elliott and reconnect. The plan worked. Elliott was thrilled she followed through and was on a plane that weekend for their first date; pizza, a bike ride, and smores over a candle (university budget). “Only problem was I forgot the marshmallow sticks, so we had to improvise with sticks from a nearby bush,” and the rest is history. After a surprise proposal in front of the Grand Tetons a year later, the two were married on a snowy, cold day in Salt Lake City, December 2013.

Despite the newly found romance, the honeymoon phase was far from that. Maggie had to leave a kindergarten class she was teaching mid-semester to move to Texas, as Elliott studied for his first round medical board exams. “It was a difficult six months. Elliott was in an intense year of school while I was adapting to my new life away from home,” Maggie says. Elliott recalls, “looking back on it, we were young, completely naive as to the challenges that we would face, but Mags was always there to support me. More than simply enduring, Maggie thrived, developing life long relationships with fellow teachers and students.” Maggie had always been drawn to teaching and found her time as a kindergarten teacher rewarding, albeit exhausting at times. “Kindergarteners have a place in my heart” Maggie says, “They are adorable and always curious, sometimes a little too curious- one funny memory is when I was reading a book on reptiles to the children on the carpet, and one student raises his hand and says, Mrs. Call, is that like reptile dysfunction?” Despite her love for teaching, Maggie ultimately chose to suspend her teaching career and raise her young family while they relocated from Texas to New Hampshire. Things were about to get more difficult as the couple then moved to New England for further medical training. “That first winter was shocking,” says Maggie, so cold were the sub-zero temperatures that your eyes would water and then freeze causing them to water.. then freeze more. “I literally wore ski goggles on my runs,” jokes Elliott. But the Calls made the most of their below freezing winters, by soaking in the New England summers on the beach with blueberry ice cream and lobster rolls. Three years in New Hampshire started with homesick tears, then ended with tears of gratitude as they said goodbye to lifelong friends. “Easily the most challenging and fortifying years of our family thus far,” Elliott says, “there is something incredibly powerful about two people finding strength in one another when times are difficult.” In the final year of his education, Elliott reconnected with Dr. Robert Greenberg, whose son he had known at Monte Vista. Dr. Greenberg had a successful and established dermatology practice in San Ramon, lending Elliott an opportunity to head back west and raise his own family back in Danville. Maggie is from Salt Lake City, and not being a California native, she was curious although tentative about the move back to California. “I had heard so many things about Danville through Elliott but found them hard to believe. But now, three years here, and it’s hard to disagree!” Maggie admits. When the brief moments of free time emerge between caring for four young children all below 7 years old, you can find Maggie enjoying some personal time reading and organizing. “The container store should send us a VIP card,” Elliott jokes. “No but really, Maggie is amazing at organizing- something you don’t appreciate until you see it first hand.” Maggie also loves to have days on the mountain snowboarding and cooking for her family. Elliott knew from his anatomy classes at Monte Vista that medicine was going to be his profession, although his early ambitions of becoming a surgeon were tampered when it dawned on him the irony of his name. The thought of “Dr. Call is ON CALL was too much to bear. I enjoy sleeping way too much.” That led way to an interest in outpatient

medicine and ultimately dermatology. “It has been one of the best decisions of my life. I absolutely love what I do. I see kids, adults, elderly, and everyone in between and have a blast with it. So very grateful to be able to practice in my very own backyard, in the town I grew up in!” It also helps that he can easily enjoy an early morning sunrise bike ride up Mt. Diablo before he starts his days at the clinic. Four young children keep the Call family busy and sure to elicit the “wow, you’ve got your hands full” comment at the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Charlie (7) is a second grader at Montair and has been mastering the art of comic book drawing and running cross country. It must be the shorts, or perhaps the ribbons, but his love of running is surely making his parents proud. Peter, (5) and in Kindergarten at Montair, recently started playing for Mustang soccer, entertains the family with his daily animal facts and obsession with ketchup. The first princess of the bunch, Penelope (3), loves dancing, the colors pink and purple, and accessorizes her princess dresses with her favorite bracelets. The baby of the family, sweet June (1), is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. She is the “easiest” of the bunch and provides her family with lots of laughter and perspective on how grateful they are to one big happy family. Although the Calls do not have any pets, the winning goldfish from last year’s Alameda County Fair, barely made it home, just to have a “proper burial in the side garden next to the dead tomato plant.” It was a valiant effort to keep them part of the Call family, but alas, the garden is where they reside.

With a full house of small children, they admit they “know their limits” with regards to big vacations. For the time being, they plan day trips to the beach in the minivan “throwing in some tacos on the way home, tip toe around the tantrums and call it a day.” Not to sell themselves short, the Call family did a recent summer vacation in the minivan to Montana…52 hours of driving, 3300 miles, DVD’s, headphones, and lots of gas station stops...Elliott can’t believe that Maggie was able to put up with him for all of those hours at a time. “I’m pretty sure she almost took the keys and left me at a gas station in Nevada.” Thankfully, she did not, and back home in Danville is where they ended up. Moving back home to Danville was a priority for Elliott. Although it may have been a tough sell to convince Maggie to move to California, she has thrived in the area. Elliott was able to convince Maggie that there is something “truly unique” about the small town in which the community is built on close relationships with neighbors, a fantastic education, nearly perfect weather and a plethora of outdoor and recreational opportunities. After renting for a few years off of Estates Dr, the Calls recently bought a home in the Town and Country neighborhood. Having grown up off of Green Valley Rd., Elliot acknowledges that it is only recently that he has come to appreciate how much the west side has to offer. He is grateful for the daily opportunity to “bump into old friends, families, mentors, and coaches that still call Danville home.” You will be sure to see Maggie at Trader Joe’s picking up frozen pizzas for their regular family movie nights, or perhaps you have even run into the Calls walking in town. With a family of 4 little kids, the Calls greeting for their neighbors is “You will hear us before you see us!” From the Danville Living family, we can’t wait for both!

t’s a new year, meaning that not only is it time to start on your New Year’s Resolutions, but it is also the perfect time to expand your horizons and get outside of your comfort zone. A great way to do this is by trying some new foods from various different cultures, and Danville has many yummy restaurants perfect for this. One fairly new restaurant in Danville is Falafel Boy on Hartz Avenue! With a plethora of rich, Middle Eastern foods to pick from and even more side dishes, you’ll be sure to find something you love. The restaurant also has many vegan and gluten free options such as the Baba Ganouge, a rich, creamy side dish made with Tahini and eggplant. Another great option to try is the Chicken Shawerma or really any of their specialty wraps. If you want to try some delicious and healthy Middle Eastern food, then this is the place to be! Another restaurant that opened up in Danville around this time last year was Nick the Greek. Nick the Greek is a fantastic

restaurant that is super in touch with their community. According to their official website, for every Jerry rice bowl sold, one dollar is donated to the 49ers Foundation. The 49ers Foundation uses football to empower children all over the Bay Area, and is strongly supported by Nick the Greek. So, if you want to try some yummy Greek food, like their extremely popular Gyro Bowls, and help out the Bay Area, be sure to stop by. Lastly, if you’re craving some mouth-watering Thai food, check out the Lotus Thai also on Hartz Avenue. With a wide variety of foods to pick from off of their menu, diners can enjoy anything from the Honey Grilled Pork to Fresh Avocado Rolls. Plus, if you love their food, like I know you will, you can even order catering party trays for some delicious meals that will make your guests never want to leave! All throughout Danville, there are awesome new places to try different foods and appreciate many cultures from around the world. With the new year upon us, this is the perfect time to get out there and try something new!

Hi - my name is Pompano. The shelter volunteers say that I’m an easy-going dog. I’m a handsome brown and black Shepherd mix around five years old with ears that sometimes slightly flop over. I currently weigh 81 pounds. The volunteers appreciate how patient I am when they come to take me in or out of my cage. I also sit politely for treats and take them gently. I know basic commands like ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘shake’.

As a renowned sports psychologist and a consultant for the San Francisco 49ers, his philosophy towards athletes including people like Jerry Rice, provides a foundation and perspective to motivate the best in any person. Rice believes that you have to “Look the part, act the part, to be the part.” If you are not taking the time to present your best self, how is anyone else going to feel your full potential? Before you give up on the idea of resolutions altogether, consider reframing them as acts of self-compassion and resilience that can benefit both you and your loved one.

Sunday Sauce By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

ou don’t have to be Italian to love a good Sunday sauce. This dish goes by many names, and comes in many different styles. Sunday gravy, sugo or just plain red sauce. Sometimes it’s spicy, sometimes it’s heavy on the tomatoes or heavy on the meat. There really is no wrong way to make a Sunday sauce as long as you add a heavy dash of love. I came up with this recipe when I was short on prep time and only needed a two person serving. This recipe can always be doubled or tripled if you plan to feed a crowd. The only problem you’ll have is deciding which pasta to serve this over. I’m going with angel hair because it’s my husband‘s favorite. Small-batch Sunday sauce Time: 7 Hours. 30 minutes of active cooking. Serves: 2-4

You will need;

• 1-2 sausage link (casing removed) hot or mild • 1-2 pound bone-in beef shank, cross cut • Drizzle of olive oil, divided • 3/4 C. Yellow onion, finely chopped

• 1 Celery rib, finely chopped • 1/2 C. Carrot finely shredded • 2-3 Cloves fresh garlic, finely minced • 1/3 C. White or red wine • 1 tsp. Dry Italian seasoning • 1 Can high quality Italian crushed tomatoes • 1 Can 8oz tomato sauce • 1/3 C. Chicken broth or water • Salt and Pepper • A big dash of red pepper flakes (optional)

Putting it together;

Pull out your crock pot and set it to low heat so it can warm up. Next, rub the beef shank with salt and pepper and set aside. In a sauté pan, heat the oil and brown the sausages until it’s no longer pink, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer it to the crockpot leaving the sausage grease. Add a little oil to that same pan and sear the the beef for 2 minutes on each side. Transfer the beef to the crockpot. Add a little more oil to the pan and throw in the onion, carrots and celery. Sauté on medium heat for 3-5

minutes or until the veggies are soft. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Add the wine and cook for another minute. Add the tomatoes, Italian seasoning, spices, broth and salt and pepper to taste. Once it comes to a boil, pour the tomato sauce over the beef and cover it. After 6 hours, the meat will be tender and hearty. Add more salt and pepper if needed and remove the bones that were in the beef shank. Serve the sauce over your favorite pasta or polenta with lots of parsley and parmesan cheese. Stephanie Seaberg has lived in the East Bay for the last 30 years, and is a SRVHS Alumni. Annual General Meeting 2023 Recap By Melissa Durkee, Marketing & Communications Director, Mustang Soccer

n November 13, 2023, Mustang Soccer held our Annual General Meeting. The nominating slate for the new board members was presented and voted on by the membership, and many were presented with special recognition awards. New Board Members are Chris Frangos and Gregory DePaco. Chris will take on the role of Competitive Director and Gregory will take on the role of Equipment Director. Returning Board Members are Ricardo Martinez and Tripp McNutt. Ricardo will take on the new position of President and Tripp will stay in his current position as Recreational Director - Girls.

The Linda Ziemba Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Kelvin Downes, in recognition for generously volunteering his time and energy on behalf of all the youth of the Mustang Soccer League. The Rick Samson Memorial Volunteer Award was presented to Alan Summers, in recognition for generously volunteering his time and energy on behalf of the competitive youth athletes of the Mustang Soccer League. The Bob Oxenburgh “Honor the Game” Award was presented to our Youth Referee Mentor Program, which included, Greg Burgess, Jit Mistry, and Jon Talbot, in recognition for best exemplifying the spirit of “honoring the game” through his actions and sportsmanship, demonstrating to the children that the game and its values are more important than a victory. The Kinnear Competitive Coach of the Year Award was presented to Fredrick W. Wilson III, in recognition for always putting the betterment of his players first, in all trainings and games. He displays integrity, perseverance, and a commitment to the philosophy of our competitive program. Referee of the Year Award was presented to Adult Referees, David Brophy and Sarah Mitchell, and Youth Referees, Max Burgess and Jasmine (Jay) Rudick, who all officiated a minimum of 20 games this Fall season as both centers and AR, have positive attitudes, demonstrated professionalism, are good listeners, and live our Mustang Soccer Referee Motto, “Learn and practice something every game!” Student-Athlete Awards were presented to four student-athletes, who are seniors in high school, in recognition of their altruistic and valuable contributions to Mustang Soccer, outstanding performance as a soccer athlete, and exemplary academic achievements. This year’s recipients are Emily Kalin and Joshua Balagot. Youth Coaches were given special recognition for their willingness to assist with our Recreational program, allowing more youth the ability to play on a team. Thank you to Joshua Balagot, Ella Beardslee, Connor Clark, James Downes, Alden Hofstde, Taylor Juroff, Emily Kalin, Neal Malik, Nicole McClure, Bella Silva, and Nick Timbers. Special Recognition was given to Bill O’Donnell for his long-term commitment as a team admin for the 06B ECNL Team. Special Guest, Marin King Goldt, widow of Dick King, was in attendance. She expressed her and her family’s sincere gratitude to the club for the continuation of our annual end of season Rec and Rec Plus Dick King Tournament, named after her late husband.
