Resident Feature Relatively new to the area, but making a big impact to our town, is Gwen Holtan. Gwen moved to the Del Amigo neighborhood from Chicago in 2020. “When I was much younger, I lived in San Ramon with my family, so I was already familiar with the area. I’ve always wanted to move back, and here I am!” Choosing Danville was easy, as her older sister has lived here for some time. Being near family was a huge draw, as was all the amazing features our little town has to offer. For most of Gwen’s career she worked in healthcare at Johnson & Johnson and Walgreens. That career experience, when combined with her can-do attitude and passion for fitness, has led to her expanding her professional journey into business ownership and entrepreneurship in 2017. Her company has traveled with her from Chicago to Danville and is thriving in this new environment. Gwen is now the proud mind and body behind Beyond the Box Nutrition, “I am a certified health/nutrition coach… I provide services to help people lose weight, get healthier, and perform better in their chosen sport.” Gwen’s hands-on approach and simple solutions set her clients up for long-term success as opposed to quick fixes. Of her career shift, she says, “Many people need help with their health and wellness and I want to be part of the solution. Teaching and guiding people to live a healthier lifestyle is the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had.” She doesn’t just teach it, she lives it. As a young girl, Gwen was successful in trying out to be a ball girl at a professional tennis tournament. Her commitment to sport and competition led her to CrossFit, where she’s been training for over twelve years. The last seven years she has also challenged herself (and others!) in CrossFit competitions. Recently she just started playing Pickleball and is absolutely loving it. And of course, like most of us, long walks down the Iron Horse Trail never get old! A trip to the Farmer’s Market is a Saturday staple. Hand in hand with engaging in physical activities, Gwen loves to cook. Finding and developing new recipes that she can share with her clients keeps everyone happy! Gwen’s outgoing personality is able to shine as a member of the Alamo Danville Newcomers Club, “I have met some incredible women and participate in fun activities.” She is also looking forward to exploring the Danville Public Library more and taking oil painting and ukulele lessons through the town rec classes. Living on a court has also allowed Gwen to establish close relationships with her neighbors, “We are always getting together in the court to celebrate birthdays and holidays. We share our favorite restaurants and shops in Danville so we can all enjoy what Danville has to offer.” Always by Gwen’s side is her pup, Chester. She adopted the little chihuahua mix in 2010. Chester is the ultimate Good Boy, finding all the joy in sunbathing and squirrel chasing. Taking a page out of

For example, last summer she went on a backpacking trip to Stanislaus Forest for three days. “We camped at Chewing Gum Lake, and it was beautiful and exhilarating. What a treat to not have access to a phone or laptop and just enjoy the sights and the company. I am looking forward to more outdoor California adventures, including hiking and camping.” If it hasn’t been made perfectly clear yet, Gwen is most certainly a motivated go-getter. he COVID-19 pandemic forced a number of industries to quickly pivot to the online world. Many businesses transitioned to remote workers, digital asset management systems, and communications through email skyrocketed. However, as businesses utilize the online space more, online fraud has only managed to keep pace. According to some reports, almost 30% of small businesses will experience fraud. As more companies look to capitalize on the digital world, it’s important to be cautious as you never know who you could be unintentionally inviting into your business. Fraud can take a number of different forms: corruption, asset misappropriation, and financial statement fraud, among others. All of these types can be encountered at any size of business if the proper steps aren’t in place to prevent fraud. Small business owners might find themselves with limited capital to invest in staff or consultants, however, there are many things businesses of all sizes can do to make it more difficult for cybercriminals to gain access to their financials or asset information.

Fraud Prevention Tips

1. Utilize anti-virus/anti-malware software on your (and your employees’) computers, laptops, and phones. These types of software can help detect any unauthorized or unusual behavior and provide protection without much effort for you. Should a bigger issue arise, the software can alert you to their findings and how to proceed to fix them. 2. Practice and teach good password habits. Every year, there are reports of the top 100 passwords that people use — don’t get caught with one of your passwords on that list. Many companies encourage their workers to use a password vault that stores all of their Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses

passwords under a single master password. Many vaults can also create random passwords, making it that much harder for fraudulent activity to happen. 3. Computer and phone security are of the utmost importance. Many sites and services now offer two-factor authentication (2FA) for security. However, sharing access to your computer or phone could also provide cybercriminals access to your information. Create separate profiles for each person using that computer or phone, and make sure you aren’t giving access to all of your applications with one single login. If you detect fraud or are concerned that it might be happening in your business, it’s necessary to act quickly. The first step is to freeze or set up a fraud alert on your credit report. Both of these make it more difficult to access your credit, which prevents criminals from opening new accounts in your name. Second, contact your banking institution and inform them of the potential fraud so they can begin monitoring your accounts (if they haven’t already). Lastly, remember that you aren’t alone if you fall victim to cyber fraud. Cybercriminals are extremely well versed in what they do, and use fear to gain access to the information they want. Red Velvet Swirl By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

his cake was inspired by a “make something out of nothing” situation that happened to me a couple of weeks ago, and it came out so wonderfully. I was getting ready to go visit some friends when I suddenly realized that I had volunteered to bring a dessert, but I completely forgot to make some thing. I had to come up with something that was already in my house and have it ready in less than an hour. This red velvet cake with a cream cheese swirl has the frosting baked into it, so it’s less of a mess when you serve it. It looks so beautiful that people will think you spent hours on this cake.

You will need For the cake: • • • • • •

For the swirl frosting:

1 Box red velvet cake mix • 3 Eggs 1/2 C. Softened butter • 1 C. Milk 1 tsp. Vanilla 6 TBS Softened butter

Putting it together:

4 oz. Cream cheese softened 1 C. Powdered sugar

Preheat the oven to 350° and lightly coat a 9 x 13 glass baking dish with cooking spray or a little oil. in a medium size bowl, combined the red velvet cake mix, eggs, butter and milk with an electric mixer for two minutes or until smooth. (Rinse off your electric mixer whisk and set it aside because you’ll need it again later) Pour the cake batter into the baking dish and set it aside while you make the frosting.

For the frosting, beat the cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. Add the butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and mix until smooth. Using a teaspoon, drop scoops of frosting all over the red velvet cake batter. It doesn’t have to be in a pretty pattern. Don’t spread it! Then, stick a knife into one corner of the cake pan and run the knife up and down, across the cake. This will slowly drag the cream cheese throughout the batter. When you’re done, take the knife and do it again, going the other direction across your cake. You should see a swirly ribbon all across the cake. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Let it cool completely and chill before serving. This cake is best served slightly cold.

NFL Draft Superstars By Braxton Lallaman Every April, the National Football League holds their annual draft, where college football players can enter to pursue their dreams of playing at the professional level. With each draft comes excitement and hope for both franchises and fans alike. Others can feel uncertainty and anxiety. Choosing the right player can improve a team and elevate them to success. Choose poorly, and it can easily set back your franchise as well. Every team in the NFL has had success in the draft by adding players who have ended up doing incredible things on the football field throughout their careers. Here are just a few of the great selections made during the NFL’s long history. •

The Arizona Cardinals selected Larry Fitzgerald with the 3rd overall pick in 2004. The wide receiver has had a Hall of Fame career by earning Pro Bowl honors 11 times and finishing 2nd all-time in receptions.

The Buffalo Bills had the 1st overall pick in the 1985 NFL Draft and decided to help their defense by drafting the defensive end, Bruce Smith. Bruce Smith made it to the Pro Bowl 11 times throughout his career and stands alone at the top of the NFL’s all-time sack list with 200 career sacks!

The Chicago Bears took Walter Payton with the 4th pick in 1975.

This Hall of Fame running back rushed for 16,726 rushing yards which at one point was an NFL record, and was a big factor in the Bears’ first and only Super Bowl winning season •

The Detroit Lions also selected a legendary running back in the draft. In 1989, they selected Barry Sanders. Even though Barry only played 10 seasons, he went to the Pro Bowl in all of them. He managed to end his career with 15,269 rushing yards.

The Green Bay Packers had many great QBs over the years, and Bart Starr was one of them. Selected in 1956, he helped the Packers win the 1st and 2nd Super Bowls in NFL history. He also won 5 championships before the start of the Super Bowl era.

The New England Patriots had one of the biggest draft day steals ever by selecting a quarterback from Michigan named Tom Brady in the 6th round. With his time in New England, Brady has earned 14 Pro Bowl selections, 3 league MVP awards and has won 6 Super Bowl titles! He’s still earning awards to this day with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Putt with Pride By Brian McDonald, PGA of Canada

ne of the great pleasures in golf is to pull the headcover off a shiny high-tech driver and then whack the ball as far as possible. This is pure pleasure, but in reality putting is the stroke that separates the good rounds from the notso-good ones. Putting can be frightening at times and downright frustrating, but here are some thoughts and ideas that will help you establish a more positive attitude and better results. You must be able to visualize the ball going into the hole. Think of scaring the hole, instead of being scared by it. For this to happen, you have to think long and hard about succeeding every time you stand over a putt, thus putting the odds in your favor. Without a definite line, there is little chance of success.

To determine the line of a putt you must decide how hard you want to hit it. Speed is way more important than line. Learning to read greens is more crucial than improving your stroke because if you can’t read the green properly and have a great stroke, you’ll never make a putt. The ability to read greens accurately is a skill that must be developed and requires a sharp mental focus and reliable, accurate feedback over a long period of time. To eliminate some of the guesswork, let your playing partners’ chips and putts guide your decision by taking note how their ball rolls and reacts as it approaches the hole. Be mindful that the ball will roll away from a nearby mountain (molasses will not flow uphill) and toward greenside ponds and neighboring lakes, rivers, and valleys. Contrary to popular belief, studies show that a downhill putt has a better chance of going in than an uphill one. Professionals are aware of this and if they must make a putt, they’d much prefer a downhill, with the grain putt, rather than an

uphill against the grain one. This is because with off-target downhill putts, gravity has a tendency to curve the ball back toward the hole, whereas uphill putts have the opposite tendency, curving the ball away from the hole. Putting is by far the most underrated stroke in golf, but more important than any other shot, because it counts. As the goaltender is to a hockey team, the putter is to you. A missed putt adds a stroke to your score. A forward or a defenseman can afford a missed assignment, but if the goalie makes a mistake, it’s a goal. Looking at my playing career through the rearview mirror, I have won junior tournaments, amateur tournaments and nine professional tournaments across Canada and I can honestly say that my timely putting is what made the difference, not the shiny new driver. s teens look forward to summer activities, especially those that cost money, the next few months might present an ideal opportunity to help them learn about earning, spending, and saving. Here are a few age-based tips.

Younger Teens

In recent years, apps have proliferated to help parents teach tweens and teens basic money management skills. Some money apps allow parents to provide an allowance or pay their children for completing chores by transferring money to companion debit cards. Many offer education on the basics of investing. Others allow children to choose from a selection of charities for donations. Some even allow parents to track when and where debit-card transactions are processed and block specific retailers or types of businesses. Most apps typically charge either a monthly or an annual fee (although some offer limited services for free), so it’s best to shop around and check reviews.

Older Teens

Many teens get their first real-life work experience during the summer months, presenting a variety of teachable moments. •

Review payroll deductions together. A quick review can be an eye-opening education in deductions for federal and state income taxes, and Social Security and Medicare taxes.

Open checking and savings accounts. Many banks allow teens to open a checking account with a parent co-signer. Encouraging teens to have a portion of their earnings automatically transferred to a companion savings account helps them learn the importance of “paying yourself first.” They might even be encouraged to write a small check or two to help cover the expenses they help incur, such as Internet, cell phone, food, gas, or auto insurance.

Consider opening a Roth individual retirement account (IRA). A teen with earned income could be eligible to contribute to a Roth IRA set up by a parent — a great way to introduce the concept of retirement saving.

ay was mental health awareness month, and Discovery Counseling Center’s hugely successful fundraiser, An Evening of Music and Laughter, played to over 300 people on the 19th. As if moving the annual event from the fall to the spring wasn’t enough, the originator of this night of song and comedy also moved/changed the venue. “Having sold out the Village Theater in downtown Danville the prior 6 years, the location this year was the beautiful 300 seat Tahoe Auditorium located within the Bishop Ranch Roundhouse in San Ramon” says Mike Copeland, the Bill Graham type creator of the show and its charismatic host. “The Roundhouse is one of the preeminent event venues in the East Bay and we were very excited about stepping up the size and scope of our show”. Sunset Development is teaming up with Discovery Counseling Center to host this year’s event. The spring show featured musical headliner Fleetwood Macrame, an entertaining and energetic Fleetwood Mac tribute band. Opening the show, was the hysterically funny, Bay Area based comedian, Shawn Felipe. “Who doesn’t like Fleetwood Mac music?” said Mary Verstraete, a show committee member from the beginning. She added, “Shawn Felipe was hilarious, and I can’t wait to see him again.” Over the past eight years, the show has featured some incredibly talented musicians such as Eric Martin of Mr. Big, David Victor from BOSTON, Nashville songwriter Paul Jefferson, Jeff Campbell (solo and with his band Static & Surrender) Stung - a tribute to The Police and The Malodors – Vanderbilt’s award winning acapella group. The night has featured emerging artists such as Sophia Pecoraro, Kiley Rothchild, Hays & Company and Courtney Randall. Along the way, the show has also introduced the audience to comedians such as Bryan Kellen, Karen Rontowski, Sammy Obeid, Tony Camin, Anthony Hill and David Vanavermaete.

The Town will be showing “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (PG13) on Friday, June 17. “Mighty Ducks” (PG) on Friday, July 1, and then the beautifully animated comedy-drama “Soul” (PG) on Friday, July 15. f you are a member of the Great Resignation, congratulations to you and your bravery to rediscover who you want to be! If you are a tenured employee, over 40 years old and established, this may feel like a midlife crisis decision. Let’s face it. The pandemic has challenged us in our personal lives and our careers. It has also awakened us to what is possible and to understand ourselves and our resilience as life changes. Studies are finding that a good amount of those quitting their careers are older, tenured employees. These are the employees who have the financial means to re-establish themselves. Some are branching out to open their own businesses. Others are creating a world that offers more flexible hours or a part-time schedule to have time to invest in what they love. You may have been pondering resigning for a while to switch gears into a new career or a different lifestyle. The pandemic has opened possibilities. Through its challenges, more companies have found that employees can be just as productive working through Zoom and doing remote work. Some companies are creating hybrid models to meet the needs of their employees. Employees are discovering that their lives do not have to be like their parents’ and other generations before them. They don’t have to wait until retirement age to create the lifestyle they crave now. I happen to be in this group. After several years of wearing many hats in education, from classroom educator to lead counselor, the time was ripe to take my transferable skills, go back to the University of California system, and become certified as a transitional/executive life coach. This transition allows me to partner with others in

establishing who they want to be. It also allows me time for my family and my hobbies - golf and tennis. As you create what your future will be, what is holding you back in making this transition? If you are somebody who tends to put roadblocks in the way of your goals, maybe it’s time to evaluate what keeps you from being fully vested in what you are capable of doing. Often, we allow negative self talk to keep us from fully challenging ourselves. Whether it is the fear of failure or the fear of change, these limitations become the voice of “could have, would have, should have.” May I invite you to envision who you want to be in the next five to ten years? Consider the barriers that are in the way of you achieving your goals. Make a list of steps to start your journey.
