Our family has been enjoying hiking all over Danville on some of the more temperate days of the last few weeks. We’ve waved (from quite afar) to the camel and zebra that live over on the east side, we’ve tiptoed around the cutest cows up on the hills of Las Trampas. Each weekend and adventure brings a new appreciation for our little corner of California. This month we are so pleased to introduce you to the Lazarus family. Ryan and Natalia are California natives that were charmed by Danville over a decade ago, and decided to make it their home. They have two kids, Cienna and Easton, and a lovable pup named Charlie. We’ve also got some great expert articles and tons of resident content to let you know what’s going on around town. work well together and emerged even stronger than before. After three years of dating, they held a gorgeous wine country wedding back in Natalia’s hometown of Sonoma. Dr. Ryan Lazarus is a Board-Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner and Clinical Nutritionist, holds a Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Functional Medicine, and Bachelor’s Degree in exercise science from Cal Poly. He is the Clinical Director at Lazarus Wellness in downtown Danville. Ryan grew up in Los Altos, CA and came into his career in a dramatic and substantial fashion. At age 18 he suffered a lifethreatening injury that crushed multiple internal organs and ended his thriving athletic career. Although he miraculously survived his accident, he was left with multiple debilitating illnesses including Type 1 Diabetes and frequent digestive failure. Ryan says, “The catastrophic event that could have ended my life has actually become the catalyst for my now decades long career as a medical professional. I have dedicated my life to helping others understand and unlock the power of their own unique genetic potential and deliver it with passion and excitement.” Coinciding with his practice downtown, Ryan is also the creator of the Wellness Warrior Rx program. t’s not often you hear of blind date success stories but that is exactly what we have with this month’s featured family, Ryan and Natalia Lazarus. In the years since their introduction they’ve grown their family to include daughter Cienna (11), son Easton (9), and Golden Retriever Charlie (human years 6). Ryan and Natalia met near the end of their time in college, when Natalia was a senior and Ryan was finishing his clinical training. Some of the commonalities that helped light the spark between them were a love of traveling, Golden Retrievers, beaches, and healthy living. After making great impressions on each other’s families and deciding to push forward with planning their future together, they decided to really test their relationship on a two month backpacking trip through Europe. “We had to overcome many challenges including getting robbed in Barcelona, losing the key to all our luggage in Florence and running out of money in Athens.” During the highs and lows of said trip, they learned that they do indeed

Natalia, a fitness enthusiast in her own right, is about to be a lot more recognizable to everyone here in Danville. She is one of the instructors at SPENGA Danville, a newly opened gym that specializes in crosstraining for maximum benefits. Natalia is currently training to become a certified yoga instructor. She earned her degree in Communications from Santa Clara University and currently works for Allergan as an Interventional Glaucoma Senior Account Consultant, where she trains Ophthalmologists and their staff on new technologies suited for their practices. The Lazarus’ daughter, Cienna, was recently featured in the December issue of Danville Living CA for her business, “The Gift of Being Grateful”. We can’t wait to see how else Cienna exercises her big heart and big talent! Easton is a sports fanatic. He loves playing soccer with his Mustang soccer team, but his favorites are baseball and football. Natalia, says, “He’s known for his lively spirit and contagious sense of humor.” Easton also enjoys playing the drums and skateboarding whenever he can. Charlie, the baby of the family, is an energetic Golden Retriever. He loves going on runs and heading to the park. Based on his ability to pull his leash and whoever is on the tail end of it, Charlie was a champion sled dog in a past life! Both kids are well versed in their family’s healthy lifestyle. They each have their own garden and grow their own vegetables to use in delicious

and healthy dishes and salads that Natalia helps them create. They’ve been drinking green juice for breakfast long before it was the trendy thing to do! As a family, nothing can beat hiking in the hills or walking downtown, through the farmer’s market and beyond. The Lazaruses always schedule some extra time on their walks and runs to talk with neighbors and friends that they inevitably encounter while out and about. In line with their everyday lifestyle, the whole family loves spending time at the beach and in the water. They love Santa Barbara, San Diego, Yosemite, and take yearly trips to Hawaii and Lake Tahoe. Their future travel list is growing constantly, and they can’t wait to get out and explore even more epic locations. Ryan and Natalia knew that Danville was going to be home when they saw how quaint and charming downtown was. They’ve been in their west side home for 11 years now and count their blessings every day. Their motto is best said in its entirety: “Instead of walking where the path may lead, consider exploring where there are no paths and create your own trail.” This process of goal setting and taking actionable steps to achieve those goals gives strength to the Lazarus’ mission in life, which is living it “to the fullest with purpose and passion while focusing on gratitude.” Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? person’s eyes are one of the first things we notice when we look at someone. Eyes play an important role in how we appear and communicate and relate to other people. Face lifts, brow lifts and eyelid lifts are safe plastic surgery procedures that can correct some of the effects of aging and make you look more youthful. An eyelid lift, also called blepharoplasty, is a facial rejuvenation procedure that can reduce droopy eyelids and puffy bags under the eyes, as well as diminish the presence of lines, creases and wrinkles. A brow lift, also known as a forehead rejuvenation, is a cosmetic procedure that raises the brows, and smooths out wrinkles and creases on the forehead. Aging typically causes the brows to move down. The lower position of the eyebrows can make you look tired, angry or sad. A brow lift can raise the eyebrows and restore a refreshed, more pleasing appearance.

There are also several non-surgical options to improve the appearance of the eyes. These include skin care products and injectables. Our New Interior Design Studio: A Space for Inspiration & Creation in the Heart of Danville By Casey Howard, Casey Howard Interior Design | Photography by Thomas Kuoh Everyone’s first question when they arrive is about the design, of course. We’ve merged the classic elements of this historic building with our edgysophisticated aesthetic, and created a space that feels more like a home we designed than a typical office. We love the vendors we work with on our projects, so it was a natural choice to showcase them at our studio, too. In designing the space, we followed the same process we do on projects: start with inspo and space planning and allow it to evolve.

hortly before the new year, we moved our studio to a charming historic building in downtown Danville. One day, a neighbor passing by shared a story about his experiences with the building when it was a family residence located down the block. I love this sense of community and coming to work where we’ve created an authentic representation of our brand in this elevated space with great natural light and street-front visibility.

When designing this space, we considered how our clients will feel when coming in for presentations. I want everyone to feel confident, comfortable and envision how our sophisticated and funky yet livable aesthetic would translate to their home. This is a space to create, share and explore, and hopefully one day soon, gather! We look forward to hosting small events to engage with our community.

Just like a home, our porch sets the stage, a living room invites relaxed conversations, and a conference table, workstation, and project table foster creative output. The library serves as a visual backdrop, and is the heart of the studio. Form and function work in harmony here, so we crafted some special hacks to maximize productivity in the prettiest way possible. A large cabinet conceals rollouts that hide our project trays, while remaining easily accessible. As we look ahead to the wonderful things in store, we are eager to meet new clients for residential and hospitality projects and continue to challenge ourselves and grow. IDEAL TEAM PLAYER?

ave you ever wondered what makes a person easy to work with? I’m convinced that there are three required virtues that make someone an ideal team player. The most important of those values is humility. The ultimate foundation of being a team player is a person being willing and able to put the team’s interests ahead of his or her own. Only a truly humble person can do this effectively. Most people recognize and define humility by contrasting it with arrogance, which, to an extent, is accurate. People who are boastful, proud, egotistical and over-confident are certainly not humble, and they are poison on a team. Whether we’re talking about Little League Baseball, corporate leadership or emergency response, team members with big egos tend to bring down team performance by distracting attention away from the collective goals of the team and demotivating peers who resent their excessive need for attention. But some team members who are not arrogant lack humility, even if others around them don’t see it. Many of these people are beloved for their selflessness, modesty and support for others, but can’t be described as humble because they have an inaccurate, deflated understanding of their own talents and abilities. They hurt their teams by failing to contribute at the level that they could. But that’s not as bad as the people who, like them, discount their abilities, but don’t support and encourage their peers. These may be the most dangerous kind of “non-humble” team players.

The second virtue that is required of an ideal team player is hunger, the desire to work hard, make a difference and get things done. It’s not hard to understand why being hungry makes someone an asset on a team; a complacent person rarely makes a team great. However, hunger alone is not a good thing for a team, as it can be directed toward the benefits of the individual more than the team. Only when a person’s drive is applied to benefits of the greater good does hunger become a team asset. The third and final virtue of an ideal team player is something I call smarts. It has nothing to do with intelligence, however, but is all about social awareness and interpersonal common sense. Ideal team players, in addition to being humble and hungry, know how to understand their colleagues and work with them effectively. They can read a room and understand non-verbal cues, avoiding unnecessary problems that socially awkward people often create. Now, you may be asking, is an ideal team player perfect? Of course not. Even the best team player is going to have a tough day or week or moment from time to time, but those that work to develop their humility, hunger and people smarts will have a serious advantage on teams and in life. here are few rules in this world. One of them is to never get between a girl and her potatoes. St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, which gives me license to think about spuds more than I should. Potato corn chowder is perfect for the rainy days ahead of us when we need something hot, fast and filling. This is also one of those soups that will taste even better the next day, which makes it a great “make ahead for work” lunch. This is one of the few times that I insist the garnish is absolutely mandatory. Without it, the soup just isn’t complete. “May your troubles be less and your blessings be more. And nothing but happiness come through your door.”

Potato and Corn Chowder Serves 4-6

You will need • 1/3 Stick of butter • 1/2 Medium yellow onion, chopped • 2 Carrots, peeled and diced • 4 Medium russet potatoes, peeled, and cubed • 1 TBS all purpose flour • 3 Cloves minced garlic • 2 Cups whole milk • 2 Chicken bouillon cubes, dissolved in 1/2 cup of hot milk

The artwork on the heart is inspired by Montair’s breathtaking views of Mount Diablo in springtime. Montair kindergarteners and transitional-kindergarteners, whose families sponsored the project, are helping to plant this garden that will grow right along with them. hat could $173,000 get you in Berkeley, California in 1936? It could get you land, a lot of land! That is how much the East Bay Regional Park District purchased the 2,079 acre park for, now called Tilden Regional Park. Tilden Park is located in Contra Costa County between the Berkeley Hills and the San Pablo Ridge. This vast land was named in honor of Charles Lee Tilden, a Bay Area attorney and businessman who served on the first Board of Directors of the East Bay Regional Park District. However, the lands one walks upon in Tilden Park were the ancestral lands of the Ohlone Indians. There are hundreds of years of tribal history below those fairways you will hope to land in the middle of with your drive! The Ohlone Indians were pushed from their lands in the 1800’s by the Spanish Explorers and Mexican Rancheros for the use of ranching. By 1910, Frank C. Havens’ Eucalyptus, Mahogany, & Land Company had planted all of the Eucalyptus in the Wild Cat Canyon, as it is known, for lumber. The land purchase came with rich historical roots and later, important uses for the nation’s security in 1942 at the onset of WWII.

Entering Tilden Park Golf Course, located 1.8 miles up Grizzly Peak Blvd., gives you a sense of calm. The hills, valleys, and ridges are lined with old growth Eucalyptus and Redwood Trees. There is no sign of college life from UC Berkeley (except a few Cal golf head covers) or of one of the most famous cities in the world, San Francisco, just 17 miles away. The peacefulness of the hills, sounds of wildlife, and being 1,800 feet above sea level creates a feeling of being far away from home. After the purchase of the land from the East Bay Municipal Utility District, the 6,294-yard championship golf course was designed by architect William Park Bell Jr. The course opened on November 11, 1937. The first hole on the course is right next to the putting green and golf cart pick up. This allows for many spectators, which is normal, until you hear that the first hole is one “supposed to be, statistically, one of the hardest holes to play.” Every hole is full of natural beauty. Tree lined fairways, views, fresh and blue skies add to the great experience that the Tilden Golf Course has to offer. There is no lack of slope – front to back, back to front, right to left, left to right, almost at no time will you be on flat ground. There may be critters on the brush and tree lined fairways, but it is the Poison Oak that will keep you from looking for your ball that went a bit too far! The course boasts an impressive driving range on the back side of the Pro Shop, which drops 20 feet then, up a hillside. The Grizzly Grill overlooks the 10th and 18th hole. At the top of hole 10 you get dramatic view of the elevation drop from the tee box while you pick up your delicious burger & fries or Polish dog from the Grizzly Snack Shack. The Tilden Park Golf Course is a local treasure with much to uncover!

Behind the Screen: How are SRVHS Students Doing? By Oliver Falahat, Junior Reporter

ave you ever wondered what it is like to be on the other side of the screen as a student with this online education system? I went on a mission to interview some San Ramon Valley High School students to get their personal thoughts on this matter. The teachers at SRV have done an incredible job at making students feel comfortable behind the screen during these times; whether that be giving extra time on tests/quizzes, homework, or by letting students stay after class to ask questions. SRV students I interviewed revealed that one of their main challenges with this new online education is the lack of social interaction and inability to see their friends most days. One way some students overcame this challenge is by facetiming their friends during breaks or passing periods during school hours. This way, students can stay connected with one another throughout the day just as they would on campus. Some students said they do group facetime calls to simulate them hanging out as a group, discussing various topics while on break. It’s great to stay connected with friends and fellow peers in these times of isolation as a way to not feel alone because everyone is together in this.

Another challenge students face during online education is the technical issues that come with being on a computer several hours a day. The San Ramon Valley High School Staff have made it very easy to get the technical support we need for when our Zoom meeting isn’t working or if we have internet issues. On the SRV website, there are lists with different numbers you can call that lead to SRV staff members who help students every day, step by step on how to solve their technical issues. The support that SRV provides for their students really shows how dedicated they are to helping us succeed daily. Many of us students appreciate the help and comfort that SRV teachers and staff provide for us and it is a key factor to why many of us are thriving during these uncertain times.

Rodeo Beach in Sausalito is Awesome! By JP Sullivan, 2nd Grade

We only went in the water up to our feet - it was freezing! The waves were also very powerful and we didn’t want to get stuck. We watched surfers out on the waves. They liked the big waves and looked like they were having a great time.

A couple weekends ago we went to Sausalito. We drove across the Golden Gate Bridge to get there. It was awesome. There were lots of bikers and people on the bridge enjoying the day. I even spotted Alcatraz!

My sister, puppy, and I immediately jumped in the sand and dug a very big hole. Brady, our puppy, was the best and fastest digger. This was his first trip to the beach and I can’t wait to go back.

When we were done playing in the water, we collected seashells and made art in the sand. My sister made a tower and then a self-portrait. I made an “S” for Sullivan and wrote a fun poem: “She sells seashells by the seashore.” Try to say that three times fast!
