Resident Feature
Meet the
Knese Family: Loving Their Schools and Community By Eve Marie Shahoian, Danville Resident since 2013
A
imee Knese was born in the seaside city of Huntington Beach in Southern California and moved to Danville, near Diablo Country Club, when she was two years old. Returning to Danville as an adult, and then raising children in West Danville was never on her radar, but she loves the close, safe community she and her two children Cora and Bryce now call home. Aimee and her children have enjoyed living in the Creekside apartments now for two years. After divorcing, Aimee wanted to stay close to her kids, work and friends. The price was reasonable, the location safe, and the neighbors are friendly. Additionally, she loves the location, as she can easily walk, ride bikes, and scooter downtown with the kids. Both children are Sycamore Stingrays, attending Vista Grande, and playing Mustang Soccer. Cora enjoys participating in the Danville Children’s Theatre, plays flute in the school band, helps with babysitting and Anna’s Cheer Camp. Cora recently got a beta fish named Bubbly. ‘’It’s an easy pet when you are not home much due to extra curricular activities, working full time, and taking family adventures.” Bryce plays flag football with both Next Level and SRV Little League, played on the U9 all star team this summer, and had the opportunity to ride the float for the first time this summer at the July Fourth Parade in Downtown Danville. Aimee attended CSU Chico, and received Degrees in both Music Education and Liberal Studies, in addition to completing her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Early on in her education Aimee wanted to be an elementary school music teacher, but then realized she wanted to teach a single class, not the entire school. This will be Aimee’s tenth year teaching Kindergarten, which she loves. She has been at Vista Grande in Danville for the last four years where her children attend. Aimee feels very blessed to work where her kids attend school. Before
going back to teaching full-time, Aimee taught preschool music, and was the Children’s Choral Director at SRV United Methodist Church in Alamo. When Aimee is not teaching or engaged with her children’s activities you will find her singing with The San Ramon Valley Choral (SRVC) under the direction of Bruce Koliha, former MVHS Choral Director. SRVC is an adult community choir that strives to create memorable experiences for its members and audience through quality, determination, and most importantly, passion. The Choral meets September through May with concerts in the Winter and Spring.”It’s a fun way to be able to make music on a weekly basis and then give back to the community,” says Aimee. In addition to sharing music with the community, Aimee is very involved with Bryce’s flag football team and enjoying the kids’ friends and families. Aimee also enjoys volunteering with events at school, mom’s nights out, birthday parties, play dates and end of season celebrations. Aimee is in the process of building a Tiny House! It will be a 368 Square Foot house, 8.5 x 28’ to be exact, and as Aimee says, “much smaller then what we see in Danville.” It has been a dream of Aimee’s now for almost a decade. She believes in living minimally in terms of possessions, as she would like to have money to spend on adventures with her children instead of stuff. “I think the tiny house will be a way to live rationally, creating more opportunity to see the world.” Aimee, who lives on a single income, explains, “It can be very expensive to live here as a teacher.” Aimee and her children hope to find space in Danville to place their tiny house and pay a smaller amount for rental space. “We are building a tiny house so we can live big!” “Trips now consist of visiting family in Chico, camping with friends, day trips to the beach, visiting parks like Great America, Water World, and Gilroy Gardens.”

Aimee feels very lucky to live in this community. “The kids are being taught by wonderful teachers, and there are so many wonderful extra curricular activities. I have amazing friends, and live in a beautiful, safe community that is close to so many wonderful California adventures.

Conquer Electronic Clutter With In-Drawer Docking Stations By Jim Long, S&J Properties, General Contractor, Resident Since 1991
C
hances are you’re reading this article on your laptop, tablet or phone. When you’re ready to charge that device, the cords will likely clutter up your desk, kitchen counter or nightstand and your overall design. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Homeowners are embracing docking stations. Before you join this growing trend, decide which kind of station you need: charging or powering. The in-drawer outlet is for charging devices such as wearable fitness trackers, phones and laptops. It has a builtin circuit breaker to prevent high-powered devices from being plugged in by mistake. (For those, you’d want a powering outlet.) Also remember to choose a charging outlet that has the right number of AC and USB outlets for your needs. If you have devices that generate heat, such as hair dryers and curling irons, or are powered by a motor, such as mixers and laser printers, install an in-drawer powering outlet. Select one with a built-in thermostat that detects heat and automatically shuts off if you accidentally leave something on. Consider the number of devices, think about how many devices your family uses. I would say the average family member

charges four devices at one time including phones, tablets, fitness trackers and laptops. A 15-inchwide charging drawer can usually accommodate as many as eight smaller devices at once. (An average cabinet drawer is 18 to 24 inches wide.) Look for a slim in-drawer outlet that doesn’t require much space and comes fully assembled. Many piecedtogether DIY solutions take up a lot of drawer space and involve heavy modifications to the drawer box or cabinet, reducing the number of devices you can simultaneously charge or power. Decide on the right place for your in-drawer charging or powering station. Most homes have a landing zone, often in the kitchen, where family members set down their phones, keys, mail and more. A charging drawer can help keep this space organized. Think outside the kitchen too: Mudrooms, nightstands and home offices are other great places for in-drawer charging outlets. If you’re redoing an office and putting in cabinetry, adding this is a no-brainer. In-drawer powering outlets are commonly placed in bathrooms to help keep hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons in order. Select GFCI-protected outlets to keep you and your loved ones safe. These outlets are a must for kitchens, bathrooms and any other locations near a water source. Electrical components available in hardware stores usually aren’t designed for repeated movement such as opening and closing a drawer and can pose a safety risk. Most DIY outlets won’t pass inspection or carry the ETL Listed Mark, a respected independent safety designation. Use drawer dividers to corral coiled cords, electronic accessories and gadgets in your charging drawers. Install canisters in various sizes to keep powering drawers organized. The challenge is figuring out how that drawer can multitask to maximize the space. Adding labels and sticking to them helps keep things tidy, as does making a habit of using the charging or powering station. Adjustable, removable dividers provide further flexibility to in-drawer charging stations. Organizing your devices and conquering tangled cords lets your home’s design shine. Armed with these tips, you’ll be able to create a reliable in-drawer charging or powering station that meets your needs and keeps clutter safely out of sight. If you are thinking of new remodeling ideas, getting the help from a qualified professional builder is worth the investment and long run value.

Fresh Fig and Orange Jam By Susanne Jacobus, Resident Since 1993
Fresh domestic figs have two growing seasons, one in June, and the second runs from August through October. I am fortunate to have a friend who lets me pick as many figs as I want. I don’t enjoy eating them ripe but love using them for jams and desserts. I make small 4 ounce jars and give them as a hostess gift with some crackers and brie or goat cheese during the holidays. I have adapted this Fig and Orange Jam after trying a number of them. The orange gives some balance to the taste.
Ingredients: •
4 pounds ripe figs, stemmed, and cut into 12-1 inch pieces
•
Zest of one large organic (if you can find it) orange
•
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice (use the orange from which you got the zest)
•
4 cups sugar
•
1/4 cup Cointreau (you can also use triple sec)
•
1 teaspoon kosher salt
Combine all of the ingredients in a large saucepan. Let stand at room temperature for at least one hour. Stir occasionally. Bring the Orange fig mixture to a boil over medium high heat stirring often until the sugar dissolves. Reduce the heat to medium low heat and cook for 30 to 40 minutes until the mixture has thickened Spoon the mixture into the hot sterilized jars. Clean the jar edges with a damp cloth. Place warm sterilized lids on. Put into a hot water bath for 10 to 15 minutes. Make sure the lids snap to form a seal. The jam can be stored for up to one year. Enjoy, Suzanne Jacobus Alain Pinel Realtors sjacobus@apr.com

Wild Mushrooms and the Danger They Cause By Kristine Myhre, Blackhawk Veterinary Hospital
W
hile mushrooms may be delicious in a homecooked meal, wild mushrooms may be harmful to you or your pet. Although mushrooms grow year-round, wild mushrooms tend to thrive in the fall when it is moist and cool. They can often be found on or around the base of trees, decomposing leaves, fertilizer, mulch, soil, or compost and may blend with their surroundings making them difficult to spot. Keeping your pet away from wild mushrooms and removing any you might see growing in your yard or in areas where you typically walk with your pet is the best way to ensure your pet’s safety as ingestion can be detrimental. Signs of mushroom poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, watering eyes, slow heartbeat, lethargy, abdominal pain, jaundice, or seizures and can lead to kidney and liver failure, or death. If you think your pet may have ingested mushrooms, seek veterinary care immediately.

Residents Giving Back
Discovery Counseling Center By Newell Arnerich, Mayor of Danville, Resident Since 1987
A
lthough I have a busy and full life as Mayor of Danville and as an owner of an architectural-urban design firm with offices in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, I also take time to serve on the Board of Directors of Discovery Counseling Center. Why, you might ask? While we live in a wonderful, safe community with great schools, our life styles are built on a fast paced, rapidly changing society that creates great pressures on each of us and indirectly on our children. I have the unique opportunity to meet and speak with a lot of people in Danville and commonly find many conversations drifting to signs of stress about family and economic pressures. Our children are often a bellwether to what is going on in our personal lives, which often manifests itself through confusion and sometimes stress in their behavior as well as our own. Discovery Counseling Center is one of the reasons why Danville is such a special place. Discovery Counseling, a non-profit organization, was founded almost 50 years ago by local people who were worried about the health of their teenagers and their friends. Thanks to their concern and foresight, we have easily accessible, high quality mental health support in all our schools within the San Ramon Valley Unified School District along with offices conveniently located in the Town and Country Shopping Center and most recently at the Dougherty Station Community Center in San Ramon. We are working hard at Discovery Counseling to ensure that, as a community, we talk about mental health and understand the importance of early intervention in the treatment of issues, such as anxiety, depression and stress, which
are very common for many of us in Danville. Even in our relatively affluent community, there are those among us who struggle with financial challenges. We are proud to say that our policy at Discovery Counseling Center is that no one is turned away because of an inability to pay full fees. We are able to offer much-needed financial assistance because of the incredible work of 120 amazing volunteers at the Thrift Station located at the Crossroads Shopping Center at 486 San Ramon Valley Boulevard and the generosity of so many in Danville who donate their best gently-used clothes, shoes, toys, books and housewares to help support Discovery. Because of the awesome bargains at the Thrift Station, the store attracts savvy shoppers who love finding a good deal and at the same time helping an important cause. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the store go to support Discovery Counseling, and we would not be able to provide critical mental health services without the efforts of so many. We would be most grateful if you would consider volunteering with, donating to, or shopping at The Thrift Station. If you or a family member is struggling with stress, anxiety or depression, please call your family physician, but also know that Discovery Counseling Center is a local high-quality resource for you. It is my hope that in Danville when we ask someone how they are doing, we listen carefully to the answer and know that there are resources available for those for whom things might not be going so well. Discovery Counseling Center makes me proud to call Danville home. Let’s all lean in and help our friends and neighbors enjoy life to its fullest!

What is happening in the Real Estate market here? By Barbara Wilson, Realtor, Coldwell Banker DRE 01404824
H
ere are the most commonly asked questions related to the market in our valley.
1. Why are houses staying on the market longer? There are a couple of reasons.Traditionally the market slows in July and August, with a small pick up in September and October. Anecdotally, it seems that buyers who have been out-bid on houses say “Forget it, we are going on vacation and we’ll look when we get back.” It also seems that sellers have seen the prices rise in early spring, taking until July/August to get on the market, resulting in a rise in the number of houses for sale in July/August. Fewer buyers plus more houses result in more days on market. 2. Why are people reducing prices? The number of reductions traditionally starts increasing in June and lasts through the summer. Sellers have seen the neighbor house sell for a high price in March and April. They are finally ready to sell in June or July, when the number of houses for sale is higher. It sometimes seems that sellers think that just because their house has the same square footage and same lot size as the house that sold for the high price, theirs should too. Only the high price house had a resort-like backyard and was updated, unlike theirs. Thinking they will get the same price as the resort house, they insist their agent market it
at the high price. So after a few weeks, they will have to take the price reduction due to unrealistic expectations, fewer buyers and more houses for sale. A newer factor seems to be some buyer resistance to the prices. They have risen so quickly in the last few years buyers are shocked at the prices, and seem to be waiting for price reductions or refuse to participate in multiple offer situations. We will see if this trend continues. Rising interest rates are beginning to have a small impact on buyer behavior, especially coupled with price resistance. Rates are about 5% which is still historically very low, but not the 3%-4% they have been. The difference between 4% and 5% on $800,000 is $480/month, not enough to keep most people in the $1,000,000 price range from buying, but enough where it may dampen the dramatic rise we have seen in prices. In all, it is too early to tell if these trends will continue or are just normal, seasonal adjustments. The advice for sellers is don’t be afraid to let your agent list the house at a lower price, because that is needed to increase buyer interest resulting in a higher selling price. Buyers? Remember that home ownership provides tax benefits, helps create communities, and that over time, remains an excellent investment, especially here in our jobs-rich desirable communities.

Eugene O’Neill Festival Brought Great Drama to Danville By Eric Fraisher Hayes, Resident Since 1973
P
laywright Eugene O’Neill is credited with the establishment of the American Drama. The plays he wrote in the early decades of the 20th century broke new ground and have shaped the entertainment we enjoy today. It is difficult to go a day without hearing about some new dramatic series on Netflix, Amazon or broadcast television. The dramatic plays of O’Neill paved the way. This September’s 19th Annual Eugene O’Neill Festival entitled “Passing the Torch” explored the relationship between Danville’s own Eugene O’Neill and the generation of playwrights that followed in his wake. The plays of Eugene O’Neill inspired a generation of post- WWII writers such as Tennessee Williams, William Inge and Arthur Miller. This year’s festival focused on the connections between Eugene O’Neill and Arthur Miller. O’Neill’s last theatrical hurrah during his life time and Arthur Miller’s first great success happened at the same time. The 1946-47 Broadway season, which featured both O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh and Miller’s All My Sons in many ways marked the changing of the guard for the American Drama. The festival opened on August 31st with a Role Players
Ensemble production of Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer prize-winning All My Sons at the Village Theatre. In the play, the disappearance of a son during WWII leaves the Keller family divided and holding secrets from each other. Like a Greek tragedy, a series of revelations leads to a dramatic showdown. The play ran August 31-September 16. Along with All My Sons, the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House produced O’Neill’s one-act play Hughie at Tao House September 21-30. Hughie tells the tale of a late-night encounter between a desperate gambler and a lonely and lost night clerk. Traditionally seen as a two-actor play, the Tao House production featured the innovative addition of a third actor which brings the story to life in new and unexpected ways. In October, the Tao House production of Hughie traveled to Ireland as part of the Two Countries, One Festival partnership with New Ross, Ireland. Along with the two featured plays, the O’Neill Festival hosted a concert, a hike and guided walking tour of the O’Neill’s Danville. On September 20th, master musicians from Ireland, guitarist/ composer David Creevy and singer/composer Melanie O’Reilly

performed the songs of Turlough O’Carolan, generally recognized as Ireland’s first great composer. David’s transcriptions of O’Carolan’s music for guitar, interwoven with Melanie’s melodies and songs, created an unforgettable soundscape. The concert, sponsored by the Chevron Corporation, was held at the Village Theatre. Rounding out this year’s festival programming was a downtown walk exploring the Danville that Eugene O’Neill and his wife Carlotta experienced. Beverly Lane, past president of the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, led a walking tour for The Secrets of O’Neill’s Danville. It started at Front Street Park in downtown Danville on Saturday, September 22nd. Once a three-day event, the Eugene O’Neill Festival has grown into a month-long celebration of the American Drama featuring multiple play productions, a concert, a hike and a special downtown walk. With the added excitement of the new partnership with New Ross, Ireland, this fall’s festival was something special. Relieving Stress During the Holidays By Dr. Mahsa Khodabakhsh, B.S., D.C.
S
tress adversely affects many of us, especially during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. 75% of all diseases in the U.S. are stress and lifestyle related including heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. With Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year coming soon, it may be a good time to evaluate your physical and mental well-being. Treating stress with chiropractic care may be just what you need to get you through the holiday season happy and healthy. Chiropractic can ultimately help you manage your stress and improve your overall way of living. We perceive stress from three different sources: the environment, our emotions, and our body. Body stress can include poor nutrition, organ malfunction, physical injuries, headaches, and more. Chiropractic care and relaxation techniques can combat body stress before it leads to more serious issues like prolonged muscle tension and nerve irritation. There are numerous factors that can contribute to stress in your life. Things like busy schedules, work deadlines, relationship problems, and health issues can cause an uptick in stress. If you are prone to headaches and migraines, chiropractic care may be the perfect pain management solution for you. Regularly visiting a chiropractor can ensure migraine pain prevention and can reduce
pain caused by migraines. If you are experiencing an unusual amount of stress, it’s probably time to contact your chiropractor to discuss a healthy way to manage it. The Benefits of Chiropractic Care Regarding Stress
• • • •
A spinal adjustment can release muscle tension and return the body back to a normal and balanced state. A spinal adjustment can reduce spinal nerve irritation. A spinal adjustment increases blood circulation. A healthy spine is the key to effectively managing stress.
How Can a Chiropractor Help You?
Since chiropractors work primarily with the spine, they understand the root of the nervous system and how chronic stress can affect the mind and body. They work to help you develop a healthier response to stress so you can get your health back on track. They can often recommend relaxation techniques for you to practice at home to continue down the path of holistic health and wellness. If the holidays have you feeling exceptionally stressed, and you can feel the tension in your neck, back, and other parts of your body, it’s probably time to schedule a chiropractic appointment. “Empowered Body, Empowered Life!”

Yes to Music Education By Peggy Arman, The Dorris-Eaton School
Y
ou want to provide a wide variety of experiences for your children, but with their busy schedules and so many activities to choose from, which meaningful, worthwhile opportunities do you select? Seriously consider music lessons. There are so many benefits to music instruction that go beyond the sheer pleasure of creating music. The array of instruments to choose from means there is a match for almost every personality type. Although the expectation may not be to become the next Bono or Beethoven, with music education your children may discover that math and reading come more easily, that they are better at working with and understanding others, and that they become more self-disciplined. Singing and playing music requires memorizing melodies and lyrics, which helps with the development of short- and long-term memory. When students understand rhythm and beat, budding musicians are actually learning pattern recognition, how to divide, and how to create fractions. Exploring string and wind instruments also teaches children about physics: sound waves and

harmonic vibrations. Studying music leads to lasting changes in the brain. Whether they are performing with musical instruments, in a choir, in a large or small group, musicians learn to listen to one another to harmonize, synchronize, and produce a pleasing sound. They know the importance of their role in the group as well as how they fit into the larger ensemble. Musicians work together to become a team. Collaborating to generate music improves their ability to listen. Music students hear the tone and emotions when someone speaks, which is important to understanding the person’s meaning and developing empathy. Since music increases interaction and cooperation, it helps children feel like they belong. Another valuable by-product of playing an instrument is developing perseverance, discipline, and patience. It takes hours of practice to sound like a “real musician.” Your children will begin with the basics of how to hold the instrument, play initial chords and notes, practice scales to warm up, and put them all together until they get it right. Initially your ears will take a beating, but when your musicians take the feedback from music teachers and put the suggestions into action, you and they will see results. Being receptive to pointers and following up with focused practice is an important skill which can be transferred to other parts of life. Yes, there are only so many hours in the day. Yes, children have busy schedules. Yes, there are multiple extra-curricular opportunities out there. But in addition to developing friendships through participation in bands, symphonies, orchestras, and ensembles, saying yes to music education may possibly ensure your child a spot in the high school or university of choice.

looks like, it doesn’t mean you have to spend less on a ring. In fact, knowing your numbers gives you the freedom to spend what you want with confidence.
How much should I spend on an engagement ring? Some might argue that this question is as important as that big one you’re about to ask. You know, the one that starts with “Will you?” and ends with “I do.” But we like to keep it simple for you. No complex budget calculators or myth-busting theories. You have an engagement to plan, so let’s get to it. Here are some simple dos and don’ts for you.
Do Save Up Nothing delights us more than when someone comes in and tells us how they’ve been saving up for months to buy an engagement ring. What a special story to share with future children and grandchildren. Sorry, we’re getting carried away... But really, start saving now if you know she’s the one. Then, instead of asking, “How much can I spend?” you’ll be saying, “Look how much I can spend!”
Keep An Open Mind You may have heard the general rule that you should spend at least two months of your yearly salary on a ring. Some companies say this is an archaic approach, but for something as tried and true as an engagement, we say don’t change what works. The two-month rule is a great place to start, and it’s the straightforward way to go if you want the no-fuss answer. This comes with a caveat, though. You know your future fiancé better than anyone. Forcing a ring to fit into this budget is not advised. Chances are you’ll fall in love with a ring just as you fell in love with her. Keep an open mind if you end up spending over (or under!) that two-month rule.
Don’t Go into Debt As much as we know you want to wow your girl, we don’t advise anyone go into debt when buying an engagement ring. This one is simple. Don’t do it.
If you’re ready to shop for an engagement ring, we can’t wait to help you find the ring of her dreams. Our non-commissioned diamond experts are ready to guide you to the perfect choice! Get started by scheduling a visit to the Padis Jewelry showroom at concierge@padisjewelry.com.
Do Know Your Numbers For those who don’t want to be boxed into a budget when shopping for a ring, simply knowing your numbers will help you feel confident in your purchase. Think about it. You’re going to be a husband soon. This is not the time to spend and pray. You should have a solid grip on your personal finances, especially before you go ring shopping. Know things like: • Do I have an emergency fund saved? • How much debt do I have? If any. • Do I have any large purchases planned in the next year? After you sit down and review your numbers, ask yourself, “Can I really afford this?” When you know what your financial landscape 26
