Resident Feature

Meet the

Andreatta-Booth Family By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

October of 2010 was a big month for many in the Bay area - it’s the year that the SF Giants went on to win their first World Series since 1954. But for Kristen Andreatta and Chris Booth, game 1 of the series was made even more special as it coincided with their San Francisco wedding! Years before, at everyone’s favorite grocery store, Trader Joe’s, Chris and Kristen met. Kristen was working part-time at the Millbrae store as she worked on her master’s degree. Chris was the store supervisor, and after three years of working together and building a very strong friendship, they were ready for more. Chris, however, was very against dating any co-workers. But as Kristen says, “I wore him down and we fell in love.” It all ended up working out because he transferred to another store right when they started dating. Chris grew up in Washington, near Olympia. He attended the University of Washington and studied architecture. Finding such a wonderful company like Trader Joe’s to work for ended up pulling him in a different direction. He is a store supervisor here in the

Bay area. He’s actually worked at 14 different Trader Joe’s, including one in Seattle, in his 20+ year career with the company. Kristen earned her BS in Biology and Biochemistry from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, CA. She went on to receive her MSc in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences from San Francisco State University. She is putting those degrees to good use as a virologist for a pharmaceutical company studying HIV drugs in clinical development. Chris and Kristen have two sons, Chas and Vincent. They also have six fish, although, “we have no real interesting stories about them”... because well, they’re fish. Which is probably lucky, seeing as how one of the most commonly used phrases in the house is “Who is watching Vincent?” He’s a mischievous 5-year-old with a big smile that would make you forgive just about anything! Chas is starting to enjoy the freedom of being an almost 9-year-old and able to ride his bike to nearby friends’ houses. Sports are huge with Kristen and all the boys! Chris played soccer his whole life, even joining his college’s practice team and rec leagues, although, his busy work schedule has prevented him from being able to play recreationally these days. Kristen was a collegiate athlete, playing volleyball even beyond school and only stopping in 2020 when the league was halted. Now they get to enjoy watching Chas and Vincent out on the soccer field. This year is their first year with Mustangs soccer, and they are loving it! Although, and surely most Montair parents will agree, the kids’ true passion lies in the gaga pit. In the

warmer months, the Andreatta-Booth family love heading down to the Del Amigo pool, where they run into plenty of neighbors and enjoy swimming and socializing.

been using his DIY skills on their house, “It’s all original still, and we’ve been slowly fixing it up ever since [we bought it].” Kristen has added her stamp to the home as well. “Last year my Covid project was growing a pumpkin patch in our front yard. I loved it! We got the front landscaped this spring so I moved my garden to the backyard and am about to harvest my haul!”

Living in the Del Amigo neighborhood gives them the chance to be downtown at a moment’s notice, say hello to folks walking by, and genuinely enjoy their outdoor spaces. They both “love how kid-friendly this neighborhood (and Danville in general) is – there are so many places for kids to go and just hang out. Also, now that our kids are in school, we are loving being so involved in the Montair community.” At Montair, Chas and Vincent love playing with their friends and learning from their teachers. Chris and Kristen are equally busy at the school, with Kristen serving as one of this year’s co-chairs of the school Auction and Chris anxiously waiting for the chance to chaperone field trips again.

Their tight family bond extends beyond just the four of them. They all love visiting Kristen’s extended family around the Bay area and traveling to the Pacific Northwest to see Chris’ family up in Washington. Each year they take a trip to the mountains, usually Pinecrest or Truckee. This past summer they made a special trip to Disneyland - a first for Vincent! At home one of the activities that brings Mom, Dad and the boys closer together is their love for movies. Chas is a big horror movie fan, so mom and dad are set with the task of finding age appropriate ones. Some of his favorites include A Quiet Place and the Netflix series, Stranger Things. As you can imagine, Halloween is a favorite holiday for everyone. Chas is by far the most excited about it: he loves it when he can be scary.

Their home has been in the Booth family since 1960, when Chris’ grandparents first built it. Chris moved in to assist his aging grandmother in 2001 with Kristen joining him several years later. They officially purchased the house in 2013, just before Chas was born. For years Chris has

And no matter the situation, everyone knows to tap into their inner Schwarzenegger when dad yells, “Get to the choppa!” Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? Nominate your neighbor to be featured in one of our upcoming issues! Contact us at asullivan@bestversionmedia.com.

Doctor

ARF Adoption Stars By Cole Kuiper, ARF

Sweet

Looking for a furry friend during this trying time? Good news — ARF is offering a virtual adoption process! If you see an animal you’re interested in on our website, just fill out an online inquiry form. Once your inquiry has been received, you will be added to our virtual adoption queue.

Two-year-old Doctor is a handsome, charming and smart lad. He enjoys hanging out with people and is polite on leash. Doctor would be delighted to be your hiking partner for fun and exploration or join you for a game of fetch followed by some power cuddling. This pup loves to chase the frisbee, already knows sit and shake, and would love to join a training class where he can earn treats for learning new tricks. Doctor has a positive history with other dogs and currently weighs 89 pounds. ARF adoption fees: $250 for an adult dog, $350 for a puppy (<6 months), $125 for a special- needs dog, $175 for a special-needs puppy (<6 months), and $125 for a senior dog (7+ years).

Meet your forever friend at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, 2890 Mitchell Drive, Walnut Creek, during adoption hours: Noon to 6 pm Wednesday & Thursday, Noon to 7 pm Friday, and Noon to 6 pm Saturday & Sunday. Would you like to be part of the heroic team that saves the lives of rescued dogs and cats? Can you share your talents to connect people and animals? ARF volunteers are making a difference! For more information see our website, www.arflife.org, or call (925) 256-1ARF.

Eighteen-week-old Sweet is ready to find a loving home! She might need some extra time to feel settled and would do well with a patient adopter who can help her build confidence. To help with a kitten’s socialization and enrichment, we suggest you consider adopting kittens in pairs if there are currently no other cats in your home. Perhaps you’d like to adopt her along with her littermate Mesquite? ARF Adoption fees: $100 for an adult cat, $150 for a kitten (<6 months), $150 for two adult cats, $250 for two kittens, $50 for a special-needs cat, $75 for a special-needs kitten (<6 months), and $50 for a senior cat (7+ years).

The Village Theatre Art Gallery Presents: Impressions of Light Examining The Radical and Challenging Art of Impressionism By Marija Nelson Bleier, Village Theatre and Art Gallery

A

n exhibition featuring artwork from middle school students of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District Exhibition dates:

November 6 - December 17, 2021

Young artists bring a fresh new perspective to the Village Theatre Art Gallery this November as the newest exhibition, Impressions of Light, partners the Town of Danville with artists from the San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s middle schools. The exhibition will feature artwork inspired by the great Impressionist painters. During the Impressionist period, artists aimed to capture an impression of an object, or landscape, or model rather than aim for exact detail. The goal was to convey a feeling of color and movement. In this

student exhibition, some artists have used the style of impressionism with more modern design concepts and themes, while others have chosen to copy the masters and their most famous works with their own interpretation and style. Students from Charlotte Wood, Diablo Vista, Iron Horse, Los Cerros, Pine Valley, Stone Valley and Windermere Ranch middle schools will be showing their work. The exhibition was imagined and curated by art teachers Gary Leveque from Charlotte Wood and Tricia Grame from Pine Valley. Both teachers have taught art in the district for close to 30 years. An opening reception for Impressions of Light will be held on Saturday, November 6, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. COVID19 safety guidelines will be in effect and masks must

be worn by all regardless of vaccination status. Complimentary refreshments will be served on the patio in front of the Village Theatre & Art Gallery. No food or drink is permitted inside the gallery as a safety precaution. As always, the reception is free and open to the public. The Village Theatre Art Gallery is currently open to visitors Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 p.m-5:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All other days by appointment only. Admission is free. All current COVID-19 guidelines are followed in the gallery. To check the latest guidelines, go to the Town’s websitewww. danville.ca.gov/vtart. For more information, contact Visual Arts Coordinator Marija Nelson Bleier at (925) 314-3460 or mnelsonbleier@danville.ca.gov.

The Holiday Survival Kit (A Coaching Conversation) By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

R

EADY OR NOT, here it comes! It’s the Holiday Season! It should be a time of celebration, enjoying family and friends, and thanksgiving for all that is good. At least that is what we are told through commercials and the continued “Happy Holiday” wishes that commence with the advent of Thanksgiving Day. CAN WE AGREE THAT THERE IS A LOT OF PRESSURE TO HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON? But for the majority of Americans, the holiday season rings in demands and expectations that for many are difficult to manage. Statistically, it is the most stressful time of year. This is proven through the upswing of depression throughout the November and December months. These demands can be amplified when families have experienced divorce, death, dealing with blended families and even balancing the schedules of adult children who now want to begin their own traditions with in-laws and their new families. If you can relate, then this month’s article and next month’s reflections may provide strategies on how to do more than just “SURVIVE” your holidays. This is about discovering tools that will help you to be your “best self” during this time of year. What brings you joy during the holiday season? Part of this understanding is to acknowledge trigger points that may cause stress, and keep you from fully being your best self. A way to explore what might trigger you is to do a journey of holidays past. As you reflect on those holidays, and begin to recall what especially brings you joy, consider for a moment what has changed and may no longer be possible due to family and friendship changes. This could easily become a subconscious trigger. For instance, this will be my first Christmas without my mother-in-law, the person who pulled all her boys and their families together for Christmas magic and love. By reflecting on the joy she brought and knowing that she will no longer be here to share the future together, I can reflect on “What can I do this holiday season that respects my own experiences of her to continue to find peace in the holiday traditions?” This exploration can set the groundwork for success and eliminate a possible trigger for you and your loved ones who can also be subject to the same triggers. What I realized first, when I did this exploration, is the need to “frontload” the conversation with the other family members on how we can continue to have a fabulous holiday. To realize that the holidays are a shared affair can mitigate any negativity. It is a great opportunity to empower everybody to come together. Communication will end any assumptions anyone is feeling. As you reflect on who will be in your holidays this year, the simple question you may ask your family is, “What do you want this holiday season to look like for you to feel complete?” This question can open the door to establish a conversation of respect, knowing each family and

friend may have changed in some way over the last year and may need something different. It can also reveal whether others have some of the same triggers as well. Reaching within yourself to understand what you need to thrive in this holiday season will empower you for others. How will you redefine what you love to celebrate that brings value and meaning to this season? There are many tools and techniques to guide you so that you can be your best self throughout the season. Another key suggestion might be, “What does my best self feel like? When do I enjoy myself the most so that I can enjoy others better?” These are meaningful ideas to consider during this emotionally charged time of year. It is often difficult to enjoy the holidays if you don’t fully understand what you need from the holidays. Part of that understanding is to acknowledge your trigger points that may cause stress, and keep you from fully being your best self. I would like to invite you to consider a few techniques to guide you to create a joyous holiday season. Consider what traditions make this season meaningful and share your experiences with your loved ones to gather their thoughts. Likewise, encourage them to share how the holidays can be more valuable for them. This may mean creating a conversation of compromise. Think about what causes stress for each of you. In next month’s article, I will discuss further ideas to consider to release unwanted stress and create the best holiday season possible for you and those you love. After all, the road you pave will only be as smooth as you allow it to be. Let’s take this drive together for a happy journey.

What is Futsal? By Melissa Durkee, Mustang Soccer

What is Futsal?

Futsal is a variant of soccer that is played on a smaller playing surface and mainly played indoors. Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón (and colloquially fútbol sala), which can be translated as “hall football.” During the sport’s second world championships held in Madrid in 1985, the name fútbol de salón was used. Since then, all other names have been officially and internationally changed to futsal. Futsal helps with the development of soccer skills and helps with soccer technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. We are excited to offer Fall Futsal Open Gym sessions on Saturdays or Sundays, November 6th -December 18th at the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church gym. This short session will be great for those who missed out on the soccer season or who would like to continue to develop their skills. The sessions will be run by Oscar Antezana and Justin Lola. For more information and to register, please go to our website, mustangsoccer.com, under Programs, go to Open Futsal.

The Wolfpack Continues to Fight Hard this Football Season! By Ricky Helton, Resident since 2004

H

ere we are as the SRVHS Varsity Wolves continue to leap over their competition. At 5-1 going into this week’s game versus the 4-2 Clayton Valley, I’m sure it’s going to be a great show. To me this is what they’ve been training for. Their schedule isn’t getting any easier and it’s time to see who rises above in the end. I’m optimistic they’ll grow even more as a team. They lost a lot of playmakers last year: although the Wolves appear to still be stacked with talent. We would love to see the town of Danville show up for the big rivalry game on 11/5 as the SRV Wolves take on the Monte Vista Mustangs here at SRVHS! Go Wolves!

Adoptable Pets at TVAR By Sue James, Tri-Valley Animal Rescue

Annie - Dog Program At T var

Meet Annie, a senior German shepherd mix who has been a wonderful companion for her foster family. Even though she’s 9 years old – she loves to hike and walk and rides well in the car, traveling to Yosemite Valley most every weekend. Annie is totally housebroken and always sleeps through the night. She loves to play with toys and will gather a mouthful of 1,2, or even 3 of her favorite toys for you to play with her. We rescued Annie after her family surrendered her to the local shelter and once in foster, we provided necessary hernia repair surgery. TVAR gives deserving animals like Annie (who because she is a senior had been passed over) another chance by taking them into foster care. All TVAR dogs live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting- allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

Shelby- Kitten Program At T var

Shelby is a 7 month old female kitten whose purrs rumble in your hands like the car she was named after. She is an affectionate and loving dilute tortieshell (a kitten that comes with the popular double-colored diluted coat pattern) who wants to spend her mornings giving you loving and soft eyes. Shelby is ready to warm up her future forever home that she joins and fill the family’s heart.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) Giving them Another Chance

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating just short of 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs. All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public. Financing Real Estate Projects By Tom Rodriguez, SVP, Construction Loan Officer, Community Bank of the Bay

H

i, I’m Tom Rodriguez, SVP, Construction Loan Officer at Community Bank of the Bay. I help first-time and experienced developers, contractors, and construction companies get the financing they need to build real estate projects. If you are looking to fund your next real estate project, your head may be spinning with where and how to begin. Real estate projects require substantial time, planning, and capital but are ultimately rewarding once complete. Most real estate developers utilize acquisition and development (A&D loans) or construction loans to fund their projects and get a cash infusion for expenses. If it’s your first time looking for financing, you may have questions, and we’re here to help. What is an Acquisition and Development Loan? Acquisition and Development loans or A&D loans are often used by construction companies, real estate developers, and contractors to create new housing communities, single-family

homes, and commercial buildings. Developers use an A&D loan when they need to purchase raw land that will then be developed — or improved — and then sold for a profit. While the bank will be contributing a majority of the funds needed, the land developer is generally responsible for providing a down payment of 20-30% of the total project cost. Down payments help to lower the borrower’s risk to the bank. Banks also consider the location of the project, the real estate developer’s history with past developments, and the local economy. It may feel like considerable planning, but when you work with a local community development bank (or CDFI), like Community Bank of the Bay, you’ll find a financial partner willing to help meet your financial needs, no matter what your experience is. What is a Construction Loan? Unsurprisingly, developers use construction loans to finance the

building of a real estate project. Constructions loans differ from A&D loans in that you don’t need financing to acquire the land. Instead, contractors and developers receive cash draws as the development of the project progresses versus in one lump sum at the close of the loan. As gains are made in the building, developers will need an influx of cash to pay for expenses such as labor and building materials and can make draws during those times.

Solutions through Community Bank of the Bay Whether you need a Construction Loan, or an Acquisition and Development Loan, you will work closely with your lender for years. Any shifts in planning, or the market, may need to be discussed with your bank, and those conversations are much easier when you have a strong relationship with your Loan Officer.

Over the years, we have become a trusted resource for veterans and their families. The legacy we’ve built is something we pride ourselves upon, and now, we hope to expand our partnership and commitment to Bay Area veterans even further.

We look forward to hiring America’s heroes.

As part of the Journey to Serve initiative, our leadership team at Cypress Lawn is committed to recruiting, engaging, and hiring veterans at all of our funeral home, crematory, and cemetery locations across the Bay Area. Fire Hardening; How Does it Affect Your Home?

he California market has been on fire this past year. In some areas that is a literal statement. So far, in 2021, almost 2 million acres have burned and over 3 thousand structures have succumbed to these fires. These statistics don’t even take into account the devastation to our wildlife and livestock. So what is Fire Hardening? This is a term that is used to describe the process by which a homeowner must keep their property cleared of highly flammable debris. This Fire Hardening law is actually a requirement now for all Real Estate transactions.

How does the Fire Hardening Law affect me? When you sell a property, you are required to comply with the Federal, State and local area mandates on maintaining a defensible space around your property. If you want a free inspection of your property you can go to Cal Fire’s Website at https://www.fire.ca.gov/ Those of us here on Westside Danville do not live in a High or Severe Fire Zone, but it is a good practice to understand defensible space and keep your property safe with a 100 foot non-flammable buffer around your home. Simple Sides

By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

T

hanksgiving is wonderful for so many reasons. Family and friends, great traditions, and not to mention leftover pie for breakfast the next day. Making a huge meal for the people you love is supposed to be fun….the key word here is FUN! Every year, I get a call from a friend or two in serious tears, because their Thanksgiving preparations are not going as planned. Putting together 6 complicated dishes to go with a turkey is just a recipe for stress. My advice to everyone this year - simplify. Simple sides are the key to a lovely and much easier holiday. Here are the top two side dish picks that will be gracing my dinner table this Thanksgiving. Go get your gobble on.

Peas and Prosciutto

• • • • •

1/4 cup milk 2 TBS. butter Salt and pepper 1 TBS. chopped minced shallot 2 cups herb seasoned stuffing, crushed

Putting it together

Combine the eggs, corn, milk, butter, shallot, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Spread half of the mixture on a greased 2-qt. casserole dish. Sprinkle all the crushed herb stuffing mix over the top (don’t spread it) then carefully spoon the rest of the corn mixture evenly over the top. Let it stand for 10 minutes. Bake it in preheated 325 degree oven for 1 hour. Cool it for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Serves 6-8

You will Need • • • • • • • •

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp. butter 1 medium yellow onion, chopped fine 1 clove of garlic, chopped 2 pounds of frozen peas 4 oz. prosciutto, sliced into bite size pieces 1/2 cup chicken stock Salt and pepper to taste

Stephanie Seaberg has lived in the East Bay for the last 30 years, and is a SRVHS Alumni. Steph is a play-writer and director for Theater Performance Workshop, KAOS Camp, and Golden Oak Montessori. Steph lives for cooking, theater, photography, travel, and singing.

Putting it together

In a large skillet, heat the oil and butter over medium heat until the butter has melted. Add the onion and cook until it begins to soften, about 2 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for one minute longer. Add the peas and stock. Bring the heat to low, and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the peas are tender, about 10 minutes. If the dish appears soupy, keep reducing it until the stock is mostly evaporated. Add the prosciutto pieces, salt and pepper and stir it well. Serve hot.

Herb Scalloped Corn

Serves 8-10

You will need • •

2 eggs, beaten 2 cans of cream style corn DANVILLE LIVING CA 27

Now You Can

Buy Before You Sell By W. Todd Galde, CrossCountry Mortgage

Y

ou’re standing by the window, staring into the yard as you sip your warm cup of tea. You smile to yourself, thinking of all of the beautiful memories you’ve created with the kids and loved ones over the years in this house. As you reminisce a few minutes, the house starts to feel a little quiet and a bit large, now that the kids are grown and moved out. Is downsizing a good idea at this point? Suppose you’ve considered buying a smaller home, but the thought of selling your home, moving somewhere temporarily, and the big ordeal that comes with it becomes overwhelming. In that case, the following is perfect for you.

Introducing The NINE Loan!

The NINE Loan is the first and only home loan that does NOT require income or employment on the application.

How to qualify:

1. Substantial equity or down payment 2. Good Credit 3. Post-closing reserves (money in the bank after closing) Unlike traditional loans, the NINE loan provides the excellent benefit of staying in your current home while obtaining your new one. Additional benefits of buying your next home before having to sell first: • •

• •

Compete and win with a stronger purchase position by making a non-contingent offer on your next home. Qualify for your replacement home mortgage without income documentation or employment verification even if you’re retired, in-between jobs, or self-employed with low “verifiable” income. Obtain your new home financing driven entirely by a 25% down payment OR your existing home’s equity, sufficient postclosing reserves, and a decent mid-FICO score. Close on your new home, move in, and then have your agent sell your vacant & fully staged existing home for maximum value after you’ve moved out.

If you’re considering the opportunity to buy before you sell, the NINE Loan may be the solution for you. For more information, visit www.BuyBeforeSell.com or www.TheNINELoan.com.

In Your Own Backyard

The most magical place in Danville By Jordan Carradine, Resident since 2016

A

s with many people, my husband and I needed something to lift our spirits during those early lockdown COVID blues. I had a dusty old fairy house in our garage from when my children were young and decided to put it in a long-abandoned flowerbed in front of our house. A new seed was planted. The one dusty fairy house turned into transforming our bark and dirt filled flowerbed into a magical place. After several trips to nearby nurseries and many (too many!) Amazon shopping sprees, the fairy garden came to life. The most unexpected surprise followed. Everyday we’d have new (and many returning) visitors stopping to enjoy the garden. People left small trinkets like buttons and coins, some left cards and thank you notes. This small fairy garden that brought joy into our lives was resonating out into our community and beyond. A true sense of community started forming centered around this small enchanting fairy garden. It meant the world to my husband and me to hear how it touched people and brought some magic and warmth to their lives. When September arrived this year we were inspired by the Fall spirit to continue to bring smiles to our community. We decided to create a special pumpkin patch for everyone to enjoy. We got hay bales, cornstalks and filled the patch with truckloads of pumpkins. We’ve given away almost 200 pumpkins (a special thanks to my dear husband for entertaining my over-the-top ideas)! People come in and wander the patch in search of the perfect pumpkin. It’s so fun to see people taking selfies and pictures of their kids and dogs. We’ve even seen some people just come and sit in the patch for a quiet respite. During October the pumpkin patch was converted into a spooky walk through experience. Every day we’ve added a little bit more. From the bubbling cauldrons and witch’s apothecary table to the 12-foot skeleton – the metamorphosis has been so exciting. We continue to be encouraged by the kind words of the people that discover our special place and we love the stories of how their lives have been touched by the unexpected surprises they’ve found here. We all need a little escape from time to time, we feel honored to be a part of that. Bringing smiles to the faces of the community around us is the best thank you we could ever receive. Now what to do for Christmas…..!

Incorrect Lifting is Destroying Your Back By Dr. Jesse Call, Sycamore Valley Chiropractic

B

y the age of fifty, 85 percent of the population will show evidence of disc degeneration. The vast majority of these cases are asymptomatic. Although it is commonly referred to as a side effect of aging, it has more to do with incorrect function or posture than with your age. Your discs are the cushions between your vertebrae that allow your spine much of the flexibility it has. Performing repetitive movements with incorrect posture is a common way to cause Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD). When the discs are stressed and placed in an improper position it begins to wear the discs down. Since they have very limited blood flow it is difficult for them to repair from this trauma. When we work and live with incorrect posture we begin to develop postural distortion patterns. You have often heard that lifting incorrectly is bad for you. This is not because lifting one time incorrectly causes major damage, however, when lifting incorrectly repetitively you begin to damage the discs and surrounding structures. It is most often noticed though one time when lifting and a large pain is felt in the lower back, making it difficult to stand or walk. It’s not just about lifting heavy machinery for this to happen. Improper lifting of lighter objects such as children, heavy purses, groceries, or any object that is over 5 pounds can also be affecting the function of your spine. This was a compound effect of many years of damage being placed on the spine from lifting incorrectly.

How do you know if you are starting to develop this postural distortion pattern that may be leading to Degenerative Disc Disease? Common symptoms include chronic low back pain with or without radiation to the hips or aching pain in the buttocks and or the backs of the thighs may be seen with walking. Other symptoms include pain generally made worse with sitting, bending, lifting and twisting. To determine if DDD is causing you or a loved one their back pain give Sycamore Valley Chiropractic a call.

Adventure Time

A Walk Through History By JP Sullivan, Third Grade

T

his summer I went to Boston and got to see my aunt, uncle and grandma. It was a great family reunion. My uncle grew up in Boston and had so many funny stories about living there. In Boston Commons, we went to the frog pond, which is a giant, shallow, kiddie pool with a fountain in the middle of it. I ran around with my cousins and had so much fun. Boston is a great place to walk around. We went on the Freedom Trail where we walked all the way to Bunker Hill. That’s where a huge battle took place during the Revolutionary War. We saw Paul Revere’s house, the Old North Church, and the site where the Boston Massacre took place. We also got to go on the USS Constitution, nicknamed Old Ironsides. All through Boston we saw old graveyards where people who actually participated in the Boston Tea Party were buried. We did so many cool things in Boston. The baseball park is called Fenway Park and one wall is called “The Green Monster”. We went and saw a Red Sox game, even though we’re not Red Sox fans, it was cool to see the oldest ballpark in America!

This statue was made to commemorate (thanks mom for the big word) a very famous Boston book called “Make Way for Ducklings”

My sister and I each placed a penny on Paul Revere’s grave. I can’t believe we saw so many famous Americans.

Have you ever heard of a duck boat? It’s a car that also goes INTO the water! That was a super cool way to tour the city. If you like history and walking a lot, Boston is a great place to visit!

“Kilroy was here” was written all over the duck boats. It has a really long story, but basically it became a symbol to American soldiers in WWII to feel connected to America and remember what they were fighting for.

Old Ironsides is actually made out of wood! They called it that because no cannon balls could get through the ship’s sides.

air loss should not be something that haunts you every time you look in the mirror. This is especially true during the holiday season when we typically see more family, colleagues and friends than any other time of the year. The good news is the science of hair restoration has evolved significantly over the last several years and now there are many new and innovative technologies, treatments and procedures. At our Blackhawk Hair Restoration practice, we specialize in being able to offer men and women a variety of treatment options depending on what stage and type of hair loss they are experiencing. Our specialized hair restoration team has over 50 years combined experience treating a wide range of hair loss disorders and aesthetics. We pride ourselves in delivering the absolute best care and results so patients can have a good hair day, every day of the year.

(PRP) has also helped many of our patients achieve their goals without the need for hair transplants.

Just in the last few years there have been many dramatic improvements in hair transplant procedures. When I was a resident in medical school, I said I would never do a hair restoration procedure on myself because I thought the results were terrible. But now, with new advances and technologies, I believe in our hair restoration procedures so much, that I did one to myself recently and absolutely love the natural looking results.

Our hair restoration team consistently stays on top of and secures the latest advances in technology. That’s why we’ve grown to be one of California’s largest and most advanced facilities in Northern California. We are also an advisor to companies who design hair restoration technologies and products, and a certified training center for other hair restoration doctors and practices throughout the United States.

We currently offer technologically advanced procedures such as the latest ARTAS® Robotic Hair Transplantation IX (one of only a the few in the Bay Area), the latest NeoGraft capabilities, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) hair transplantation, as well as high-definition diagnostic hair analysis. Our unique Blackhawk HairMAXX protocol (medical microneedling) and platelet-rich plasma hair growth therapy

If you are interested in learning more about our various surgical and non-surgical hair treatments and procedures, please contact us at either 800-GOT-HAIR (468-4247) or 925-736-5757 to schedule a free, no-obligation hair consultation.

The Holidays are here and

‘tis the season to bling up! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza

T

he last few years have certainly been a unique time for couples. Whether it be non-stop “quality time” provided by quarantine or the reflection we all did when faced with a world crisis and our lives coming to standstill, the pandemic and its ramifications certainly did more good for love than not. Coming out of the shutdowns, we have seen an increase in couples re-committing to each other in the most important of ways. Whether it be a surge of COVID babies or the two years worth of weddings that had to be rescheduled, love is in the air in a big way! New couples are no exception. There has also been an increase in couples getting engaged – because if you can survive months-on-end spending 24/7 together – everything else sure seems easy! As if Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, New Year’s Eve and Festivus weren’t enough, more than one in four grooms propose to their brides over the holiday season. November and December account for 26% of marriage proposals, according “Modern Bride.” As the holiday proposal season is upon us, Padis and our team of non-commissioned jewelry consultants are here to assist. In addition to our already extensive collection of top designers and diamonds such as Tacori, Verragio, Forevermark and many more, we host numerous special events and showcases every weekend leading up to the holidays. To kick off the holidays, we host Verragio and their amazing collection of unique rings on November 5th-7th. In addition to special event savings and giveaways, we will be premiering their brand new collection of anniversary bands and have the West Coast exclusive of their solitaire collection! This is the largest collection of Verragio in one place at one time in the United States!

We wish you a very happy holiday season and treasure the generations of families who allow us to become a part of their most precious moments. Please feel to reach out if we can answer any questions and if we can be of assistance at concierge@padisjewelry.com.

The next weekend, November 12th-15th, we welcome TACORI and their entire collection of handcrafted rings and fine jewelry for an extra special holiday engagement and gift-finding event. With special event savings and red carpet jewelry to catch your eye, this is one of our absolute favorite holiday events! For Black Friday Weekend, we feature A JAFFE and always have special deals so be sure to check in to our social media @padisjewelry to learn more about our offerings. As December approaches, we host our Forevermark Diamond showcase complete with some of the world’s largest and rarest diamonds on December 4th – 6th. This once-ayear event is an excellent opportunity to see our largest collection of loose diamonds, engagement rings, and designer diamond jewelry. Visit Padis Jewelry in San Francisco, Napa or Walnut Creek! Our team at Padis is here and ready to help with your hunt for the perfect ring or piece of jewelry both in our stores and on our website at padisjewelry.com. Be sure to join us at East Bay locations at Broadway Plaza – a Forevermark Boutique - and Downtown Napa in addition to our San Francisco stores. 34
