During the month of November, we are reminded that not only are we blessed and lucky to live in this wonderful town, but that we must all express our gratitude and Thanksgiving to the things that bring us joy in our life. Like many of you, I am grateful for my family and friends, both near and far, that keep me grounded and focused on what is beautiful and meaningful in today’s world. From the entire Danville Living team, we wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving! Our November issue is filled with many community contributors reminding us how thankful we are to live here in Danville. You’ll read about Veteran’s Day’s events, celebrations for our local athletes and students, a healthy Thanksgiving side dish, and even a deep dive into the classic, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving! We also have a wonderful collection of Expert Contributor articles you’ll be sure to enjoy. Our feature family this month is the McHargue family. Bill and Michelle have made a wonderful life here in Danville with their two children and we are so excited for you to read about their life journey...although we know it’s just the beginning for this fun and fabulous “Fab Four!” If you have a story to share or know a neighbor that you would love to see on our cover, please send me an email at aangstenberger@bestversionmedia.com. We welcome all families, couples, or individuals - the only requirement is that our feature family live on the west side of Danville. Meet

Bill and Michelle McHargue Enjoying every minute of their journey and adventures of life together By Anne Angstenberger, Resident since 2006 Photos provided by The McHargue Family

B

orn in Southern California, and after spending some time in Mesa Arizona, Bill McHargue’s family moved to Benicia, in Northern California. It’s where his parents still live today. Luckily for him, a lovely Milpitas native, Michelle, was working at the same start-up company as Bill in the mid 1990’s. Amazingly, it’s a long way from Guam (where Michelle was born) and the Philippines, which is where Michelle’s family originated. When Bill and Michelle met, Bill was leading a sales team, while Michelle was working on data collection. Michelle explains “the startup was in the early days of people using the internet to research and buy things online. Purchasing anything online was novel at the time. Thinking about this now makes us think, wow that was long ago, and you can really do anything your heart desires online today!

Michelle initially had her sights set on pursuing a nursing degree, but her path through education and her early career took some unexpected twists and turns…”life had its plans in store for me!” she exclaims. After becoming a mother at an early age, Michelle’s professional plans shifted towards the exciting career of recruiting. She began working with an agency that led her to interact with some of the most recognizable companies in the early years of the Silicon Valley infancy; Google, Adobe and Yahoo! Had it not been for these interactions, Michelle may never have landed in the world of Venture Capital. Today, Michelle is a partner at Costanoa Ventures, leading the firm’s people and talent initiatives. Her role is incredibly important as she shapes the growth and success of her company’s portfolio, a responsibility she is eager to take on daily. Looking back on her shift in professional trajectory, she is thankful for the experiences and knowledge she has gained along the way…”It’s a testament that sometimes, the most fulfilling journeys, are the ones we never could have predicted.” After graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in film and a passion for the movie industry, Bill eventually “succumbed to the allure of the Bay Area tech startup scene.” As he was finishing his degree, he completed a paid business internship, running a franchise of painting residential homes. This experience laid the foundation for Bill to be “bit by the business bug.” He realized he enjoyed working and managing people, problem-solving, and collecting commissions. Bill became the VP of Sales for multiple start-up companies over the years. After nearly two decades of managing teams in the exciting tech world, he used his experience to create his own recruiting agency, Talent House. For the last 8 years, Bill has been leading one of the most successful niche talent agencies for startups in the Bay Area. His team is geographically diverse and helps companies all across North America. Though their occupations certainly keep Bill and Michelle busy, they make it a priority to enjoy their home and exceptional weather here in Danville. Bill loves to play rounds of golf with his friends during the week, while Michelle can be found making jewelry and baking to give away as gifts to friends, family and co-workers. You can also find the couple cultivating their oranges, apples, squash and pumpkins in their home garden. Bill and Michelle are lucky enough to have two adult

children who continue to bring joy and fun to their home. Their daughter, Kayla, is a master barista at a local restaurant, and Luke is a wiz in the kitchen and is completing a business degree in college. The entire family are food enthusiasts. They love testing out all of the restaurants in town and planning which new places to try while they are on vacation. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as the business bug has likely bitten both Kayla and Luke. Michelle and Bill can see one day their children having restaurants or tech businesses of their own to share their creative passions for others to enjoy. When Luke is able to take a break from school, he also loves to find time to golf, surf and even spearfish. To round out the McHargue family, you can find their four dogs providing laughs and companionship to the family. Jack is their 10-year-old labrador, and they also have 3 labradoodles; Quinn, Tegan and Rowan. Tegan keeps the family on their toes as she once swallowed a bird that hit their house window, has a wandering eye for any food left on the counter and even one year ate an entire box of chocolates under the Christmas tree! The McHargue family has so many memorable moments they have shared together so far, but some stand out events were their first trip as a family to Hawaii (now they make a goal to travel to Maui and the North Shore of Oahu once a year) and purchasing their first home many years ago to raise their children. Recently they have been able to make a family dream come true, by owning a home in San Diego where they are able to make many more future memories together with family and friends.

But of course, back at home in Danville is where they find the most comfort and peace. They first moved to San Ramon from the South Bay and realized they kept visiting Danville for dining, walking and community events. They were determined to find a home on the westside where they could walk everywhere and really enjoy the small town feel Danville has to offer. Bill and Michelle eventually bought their home on the westside nearly 12 years ago and have never looked back. They are blessed with neighbors that look out for one another and have made some of their closest friends here in Danville. Be on the lookout for the McHargue family in town, as they walk on the Iron Horse trail daily or happen to sit next to you for dinner in town…. they can’t wait to say hello and maybe even invite you over for a delicious dinner prepared by the McHargue kiddos!

The lighter side of

Thanksgiving

By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

I

only have one critical statement about Thanksgiving that you might agree with me on….. it can be too rich. Now, before you start sending me hate mail, hear me out. I’m more than happy to treat Thanksgiving as a day of indulgences. However, if you go the traditional route when it comes to preparing a Thanksgiving buffet, that becomes a very dense spread. After a long day of appetizers and cocktails, you then have turkey, potatoes, gravy, stuffing and eventually pies afterward. Before you know it, everyone’s passed out in the living room from a carb overload. A good Thanksgiving table requires balance, and I’m here to push a lovely and light vegetable dish on you this year. Marinated green beans are a wonderful alternative to a rich creamy green bean casserole and takes no time at all to make. It’s not only nutritious, but you can make it the day before to save on time. Have yourself a gobbling good Turkey day.

Marinated green beans with artichokes and feta Serves: 6-8 Time: 20 minutes You will need; • • •

1 pound fresh green beans (Not canned) 1 can quarter artichoke hearts, drained 2/3 c. feta cheese crumbles, or goat cheese 1/3 C. Sliced almonds (optional)

For the dressing; • • • • • •

1/2 c. extra-virgin olive oil 1/3 c. red wine vinegar 2 cloves of fresh minced garlic 1 tsp. dijon mustard 1 tbs honey salt and pepper to taste

is warming, trim the ends of the green beans if needed. (The green beans at Trader Joe’s come pre-trimmed) boil the green beans for five minutes on medium heat, then remove to a bowl of ice cold water for 5 minutes. Drain the beans well and arrange them on a platter, then lay the artichoke hearts on top. Cover and chill until needed. For the dressing, whisk the vinegar, garlic, honey, mustard, and olive oil until well blended. Season with salt and pepper. An hour before you’re ready to serve, drizzle the dressing over the green beans, but don’t mix it. Scatter the feta cheese and almonds on top and put back into the fridge to marinade until dinner time.

Local High School Juniors Honored at American Legion Luncheon By Eric Ardell, American Legion Post 246

S

tudents completing their junior year in high school in the San Ramon Valley were recognized and honored at a special luncheon ceremony held at the Veterans Memorial Building hosted by American Legion Mt. Diablo Post 246. These young men and women were selected through application and interviews by members of Post 246. They attended the Legion inaugural coed Boys &Girls State and the Auxiliary Girls State Program for seven days in June. They learned about how government works, from the city to the state level by actually doing it. They were initially grouped into cities and established a fully functional government, then formed counties governments, and then finally established a complete state government. All held various offices and appointed

positions and belong to one of two parties, the Federalists and Whigs.

Ethem Gulcu, Monte Vista High School Ethan Chen, Monte Vista High School

Ambassadors attending Girls State:

Teen Journalist

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving By Kaylan Rizkalli, Member of the Danville Youth Council

W

ith the leaves turning red and fall steadily approaching, it’s time for arguably one of the greatest animated characters to grace our television screen Snoopy. As children, we had a deep rooted history with him and frankly all of the Peanuts specials since that’s what we were forced to watch on the last day before any break. Now that we’re older, I am sure we can appreciate the thought that went into these films more, and with November here, it’s the perfect time to review A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving was the tenth installment in the Peanuts movie, and with a run time of 30 minutes, it instantly became an award-winning fan favorite. Directed by Phil Ronan and Bill Mendez, it was based on the comics created by Charles M Schulz. The movie opens with Lucy Van Pelt’s classic trick on Charlie Brown where she swipes the football from under his feet. When everyone thinks of the Peanuts, especially A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, this scene is one that immediately comes to mind and reminds everyone of Lucy and Charlie’s small-time feud. Although many people know that Lucy loves to play pranks on Charlie and might assume she had no ulterior motive for this

move, there is actually a deep-rooted history in this prank. According to an article by Sari Rosenberg, one of the original Peanuts comics featured Charlie Brown making fun of the way Lucy kicks a football. Fast forward almost two decades later, viewers can assume that Lucy still holds this grudge against Charlie Brown and enjoyed watching him fall flat on his back in the name of sweet revenge. This scene is followed by Charlie Brown’s struggle as Peppermint Patty calls and invites herself, Franklin, and Marcie over for Thanksgiving dinner when he was already planning on going to his Grandmother’s house. Stressed, he relies on Linus, Woodstock, and Snoopy to help him create an impromptu Thanksgiving lunch. This lunch includes many childhood faves such as pretzels, jellybeans, buttered toast, and popcorn. Charles Schulz himself said that he chose these snacks to emphasize the idea of a Thanksgiving run and made by kids. In one article by the LA Times, it was reported that Schulz’s goal was to showcase the chaos that comes with children being in charge, and to highlight the true importance of Thanksgiving - spending time with those you love surrounded by food you love! Later on during the lunch, Charlie Brown walks out after the infamous Peppermint Patty insults the feast he had set up for them. Peppermint Patty has to be one of the most hated characters of the Peanuts series because of her stubborn ways (don’t worry she got on my nerves too), but Charles Schulz sees it another way. He’s commented on several occasions saying that Peppermint Patty is one of his favorite characters due to how entertaining and radical she was for her time. Fun fact, although Schulz did not like portraying any of his political stance through his work, he would end up using Peppermint Patty to support feminism and equal opportunity for women in sports. Charles Schulz created 12 days worth of comic strips featuring Peppermint Patty advocating for women in sports in honor of Title IX. At the end of the movie, viewers see Snoopy and Woodstock sit down for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Instead of the mishmash of snacks and buttered toast, everyone thinks Woodstock and Snoopy can only make, they sit down together to eat a proper Thanksgiving turkey. If any of you find that weird, it’s probably because Woodstock is a bird… eating another bird! This ending scene caused a lot of controversy and according to “Peanuts-Wiki Fandom,” it was almost never aired. One of the producers, Lee Mendelson, pointed out how odd it was, but Charles Schulz insisted on keeping the scene how it was. All of these fun tidbits combined have made A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving into the widespread film it is today. Loved by millions of Americans across the country, it screams comfort and fun. Now, the next time you watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving surrounded by family and friends, you’ll be able to share a little more about the movie.

Does a Swimming Pool Add Value to My Home? By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, Realtor® at Compass

I

’d like you to picture a classic movie scene from the past. It’s Clark Griswold, in Christmas Vacation, looking out his window while envisioning the beautiful swimming pool that he dreams of putting in his backyard. He’s picturing the fun times ahead and wonderful memories to be made, in his family’s dream backyard. If you are considering adding a swimming pool to your home, you should take the time to evaluate a few key questions. Cost is at the top of the list. This includes both the cost of installation, as well as the cost of ongoing maintenance and utilities (water & energy, equipment, pool service, etc.) and possibly insurance. If it’s an affordable upgrade for you, it’s important to consider how long you plan to be in your home. In our local market, home sellers rarely get a full return on the cost of the pool that they put in. Why? I see it as a “rule of thirds.” In my experience working with home buyers, roughly one third of buyers would love to have a pool. Another third absolutely do not want a pool. The remaining third tend to be somewhat indifferent, but generally do not want to pay extra for a pool or maintenance. The result is that a backyard pool can limit

the number of buyers who are interested in making an offer, or the existence of the pool may limit the price that they are willing to pay. Wait!! Does this mean that my pool does not add any value to my home? Not necessarily. If you have a beautiful pool that is a gorgeous focal point in your yard and it is well situated and in great condition, it most certainly will add value, and it may be the deciding factor for a buyer who wants a pool. It just might not add as much value as it cost to put it in. Some pools are a definite negative, when it comes to your home value. A large swimming pool in a small yard can leave potential home buyers uninterested, simply because it doesn’t leave them the yard space that they desire for other purposes, such as safe play areas for children and pets, gardening or entertaining. Are you wondering what to do with your old pool that now needs more than TLC? My suggestion would be to consider how long you plan to stay in your home and also evaluate how much you plan to use the pool in the future. If you plan to stay a long time and you know that you won’t be using the pool, it makes financial sense to remove it. You may be surprised by how affordable a proper pool removal/destruction is (compared to the cost of resurfacing, repairs and ongoing maintenance). Removal should always be done with a permit, by a qualified contractor. If you’re not planning to stay in your home much longer, it may be better to keep your old pool, so that the next homeowner can decide whether to remove it or improve it. For someone who wants a pool, there is definite value in the old, existing pool. Also, adding a pool to a yard that has had had one “removed” can be challenging, especially if it is not a large yard. Your decision shouldn’t be strictly financial. Backyard swimming pools offer healthy recreation and family fun. They also come with extra responsibility for safety. Depending on your own personal experiences and lifestyle, one of these two factors will likely impact your decision. Every home sale is unique. If decisions about a pool are leaving you feeling overwhelmed, please feel free to reach out to me at 925-964-5010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@Compass.com for a custom analysis of your options. Navigating Your Best Self, A Coaching Conversation By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

J

ust like that - November is upon us. The days are becoming shorter and the crispness of evenings are setting in. The tennis players and golfers are either shutting down the clubs earlier or teeing off and rallying later in the morning. As the Autumn season moves in and waves farewell to the summer warmth, I am reminded of the simple phrase, “Time waits for no one.” As I ponder these five words I am reminded of the goals that had been set as 2023 promised to be a more welcoming year than 2022. What I especially recall are the goals I set for myself. After all, the seasons are reflective of life’s carousel - around and around - both always vow to make another trip circling exactly to the starting position. In many ways, 2023 has been a great year - but that is because I chose to navigate my own journey. You may ask, “What do you mean by navigating your own journey?” I chose to set a plan of what I value and commit to driving my plan to reality. For instance, I discovered early in 2023 that I was no longer at my best weight. I could feel it. My body felt heavier. I was experiencing unusual heartburn and other pains. So…I hung at the front of my closet an outfit that fit me perfectly pre -Covid. I could not even zip it now. That outfit reminded me what is possible as I entered the closet each day. I evaluated a nourishing eating plan that included more fruit, salads and much less breads and desserts. I rode the peloton a little harder, continued to play tennis

and meditated. Why meditate? Meditation helped me focus on each day and my goals. By early April, I returned back to my best weight, felt better about my body, and the dress fits perfect. I achieved other markers too, navigating my journey that involved both business and personal choices. I won’t bore you with the details, but I will challenge you to reflect on your year. How well did you steer your boat of life? If you found yourself struggling to stay on course, what is your plan to move forward? EYH Life Coach may be the partner you need to balance yourself, navigate your carousel ride. With the personal demands - getting your child to their best college, understanding life as an empty nester, facing your goals in preparation for retirement, EYH can define with you this journey. Call today! Let’s get back on course. Christina Dalton is the Principal of EYH Life Coach. She applies her own personal and career transitions along with several degrees and credentials to provide insight and knowledge into the coaching experience. Christina handpicks her staff, all of whom are ICF credentialed and have unique experiences to create invaluable coaching sessions.

Creating an Inclusive Thanksgiving for a Loved One with Dementia By Eunice O’Farrell, Executive Director, Carefield Pleasanton

T

hanksgiving is a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate. But if you have a loved one with dementia, you may be wondering how to include them in the festivities in a way that is enjoyable and safe for everyone. Here are a few tips: Prepare your loved one. Talk to them about the Thanksgiving celebration in advance. Explain who will be there and what to expect. Show them photos of family and friends they may not have seen in a while. This can help them feel more comfortable and prepared on the day of the event. Prepare your guests. Let your guests know about your loved one’s diagnosis and any special needs they may have. Ask them to be patient and understanding. For example, your loved one may have difficulty remembering names, or they may need to take breaks from socializing. Create a quiet space. Have a quiet place available where your loved one can go if they become overwhelmed or need a break. This could

be a bedroom, a guest room, or even a corner of the living room with a comfortable chair and a blanket. Plan the schedule around their routine. People with dementia can be easily disrupted by changes to their routine. Try to keep the Thanksgiving celebration as close to their normal schedule as possible. This includes mealtimes, naps, and bedtime. Limit the number of guests. A large crowd can be overwhelming for people with dementia. Consider having a smaller gathering of close family and friends, and be aware of how many new guests you may be introducing this holiday. Here are some specific activities that you can do with your loved one with dementia on Thanksgiving: Look at old photos or videos together. This can be a great way to reminisce about happy memories and re-introduce your loved one to family members they may not have seen in a while. Recreate an old Thanksgiving recipe together. If your loved one always made the pumpkin pie, you can recreate this experience by creating a simpler version of their recipe (like no-bake pumpkin pie bites). That way your loved one can be a part of the preparation. Go for a walk. Get moving with a time-honored Turkey Trot! Getting some fresh air and exercise can be beneficial for everyone, including people with dementia. Most importantly, focus on making Thanksgiving a positive and enjoyable experience for your loved one with dementia. The senior lifestyle consultants at Carefield Pleasanton are always available to answer your questions about memory care for your loved one, and the benefits of a community. Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance By Sue James, President

Klondike

They say, “go big or go home!” Klondike wants to know why he can’t do both? KLONDIKE IS A BIG, mellow, debonair and dashing Alaskan Malamute. And while he is A BIG BOY - his volunteer friends and shelter staff friends say he’s a pretty laid-back sort of guy. After all, more dog = more love, no? Klondike is approximately 7 years old, and currently weighs 144 lbs. Yup, you heard that right. But his favorite things to do are going on strolls, playing ball, lazing around in the yard, sleeping, and getting a whole lotta LOVE from his volunteer friends. He has already been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and dewormed, and is ready to go to his new home! If you are looking for a devoted, loving, adorable companion - Klondike could be the BIG BOY for you. He is located at the East County Animal Shelter – 4595 Gleason Drive in Dublin – Kennel A10. You can see more about Klondike and additional pictures and videos at www.tvar.org.

FOSTER KITTEN PROGRAM - BEAR

Bear was discovered at the shelter on the brink of death. Cold and weak, with hardly enough energy to let out a gentle meow for help, a four-week-old kitten was dying of something completely treatable. Bear had tapeworms. A TVAR foster scooped Bear up, syringe-fed him a mixture of kitten formula, hot water, and high-calorie wet food, gave him supplemental fluids, and dewormed him. Bear was taken home that night and nursed him back to health over the next several days. Helping neglected kittens like Bear is what TVAR is all about. With support from the community in terms of volunteering and donating, TVAR has been able to help many animals like Bear, neglected and struggling to survive, to have a second chance at a happy life. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance.

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

Friday Night Lights are Here! By Ricky Helton, Resident since 2004 | Photos by Ricky Helton Sports Photography

T

he San Ramon Valley High Wolves are 6-1 as I am writing this article. The team battled hard, but lost in overtime to De La Salle. That won’t stop this team from winning more. That won’t stop this team from winning more. Something special about this years team is you can see and feel the unity on and off the field looks to be another special season, led by QB Luke Baker and defensive/offensive weapon Marco Jones. But these are just a couple of players of the week that are constantly in the news. I couldn’t leave out the RB, John Ben Pau Mendoza, who I’ve been watching balling since his freshman year. The vision JBPM has, is what separates himself with others in the game...he’s a baller! Unfortunately, he just recently suffered an injury that will leave him on the sidelines for now. No doubt in my mind this young man will be doing everything possible to rehab and work to get back on the field. Knowing this young team I’m sure every game ball given out will have John Ben Pau Mendoza’s name on it...that’s how much this team appreciates this young man. They say it’s just a game.... but for most of us...It’s Friday Night Lights with the 12th man/woman :-) leading the way! They even have their very own Cheer Wives chronicling their journey. Let’s gooooo!
