Hello Neighbors!
Welcome to October, Danville! If you are anything like me, the month of October tends to sneak up on me after settling into the new school year and fall routines. But sure enough, the days are getting shorter, fall weather is here, and we are full steam ahead into preparing for Halloween. One of our family’s favorite traditions is driving around all the westside streets after sports and activities to look at all the “spooky houses” along Estates, Prospect and Verona Ave....which is your favorite? And of course, Danville never disappoints when it comes to a great stroll down Hartz, as you head to dinner on a crisp fall evening.
This month we have a fun filled issue packed with events for the whole family. From SRVUSD’s Run for Education, to concerts, movies and Halloween celebrations for the whole family....your furry friends as well... there is something for everyone in Danville this October. We also have a great collection of expert articles for your enjoyment and local sports highlights from Mustang Soccer, Danville Oaks Rugby and the Oakland Roots.
You will absolutely love reading about our feature family this month, the Hebert Family! They are an “East Coast Boy, meets West Coast Girl” love story, who has chosen to settle down in Danville and raise their family here on the westside. We are so excited to share their story with the Danville Living Community,
If you have a story to share or know a neighbor that you would love to see on our cover, please send me an email at aangstenberger@bestversionmedia.com. We welcome all families, couples, or individuals - the only requirement is that our feature family live on the west side of Danville. So send your friends and neighbors my way, I can’t wait to meet them!
See you around town!

Meet the Hebert Family
Building a Blessed Life
By Anne Angstenberger, Resident since 2006
Photos provided by Hebert Family
Growing up in the Northeast, Derek spent most of his youth on the south shore of Boston, and attended South Shore Christian Academy in Weymouth, MA. Fun fact: Derek was born in Burlington, Vermont while his Dad was a top recruit and played for UVM’s ice hockey team when they were ranked as high as #2 in the country, but unfortunately his dad wasn’t able to play professionally due to injuries. Eventually the family landed back in Massachusetts where Derek would be raised. Across the country, our East Bay native, Anne, grew up in Alameda and Piedmont, attending Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, CA. Several years later, Derek’s friend’s birthday party was the lucky meeting place for Anne and Derek to begin their relationship and eventually start their sweet life together. The two were married in July 2015 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, followed by a reception at the historical and beautiful Olympic Club of San Francisco. Their wedding day is still one of their most treasured memories as they celebrated their union with over 340 family and friends.
“Work hard and play hard” is definitely a phrase that can help describe Anne and Derek. Ever since receiving her degree from University of Southern California in 2006 (Fight On!), Anne has been working in commercial real estate. Currently, Anne works for CBRE representing building owners in retail and office leasing in San Francisco, Oakland and along the 680 corridor. In 2007, Derek graduated from Stonehill College (the sister school of Notre Dame) with a degree in Finance, followed by receiving his Executive Certificate in Financial Planning from Santa Clara University. Derek has worked over 17 years in investments and finance, the last 7+ as a Private Wealth Manager, Derek is focused on helping younger clients and those approaching retirement age have financially stable and successful retirement years. As an entrepreneur, Derek has adopted a business model as an Independent Fiduciary. He is focused on using cutting edge planning software and tailored scenario analysis to help his clients. Derek also loves helping his clients on their investments and opportunities for equity growth. Seeing his clients fulfill their dreams for a successful future makes all the hard work as a business owner worth it.
The Hebert children are also a hardworking and active bunch. Dominic, 7, is a 1st grader at St. Isidore School where he loves learning, reading and sharpening his math skills. Dominic is also a sports enthusiast like his dad, playing soccer, basketball, golf, and his favorite….baseball! In 2018, Anne and Derek were blessed to have 3 children under the age of 2! Now, their 5-yearold twins, Rocco and Gianna, are both in TK at St. Isidore. Rocco loves playing baseball, gymnastics and even rock climbing. When not playing with princesses or taking dance classes, you can find Gianna playing at the park and swimming in the pool with her brothers. Mustang Soccer Club better watch out, as Gianna scored 5 goals in her first ever soccer game this year! Derek has also enjoyed coaching his kids local sports teams, both for Danville Little League and Mustang Soccer.
Even though Anne and Derek are busy raising their three children and their respective careers, both Anne and Derek prioritize being active. After practicing yoga for over a decade, in 2020 Anne pursued the opportunity to become a certified yoga teacher and now enjoys teaching yoga regularly. Coming from a big sports family, Derek played competitive sports since he was 5 years old, playing varsity soccer, basketball and baseball in high school. Continuing as the Captain of his college soccer team, Derek was also a 2-time high school All-American in soccer and an NCAA Track and Field All-American athlete. Nowadays, Derek enjoys all types of fitness, including biking, swimming and even completing his first triathlon in 2022. Giving back to the community and participating in local philanthropic opportunities are also very important to Derek. Through supporting organizations such as NPH, Child Fund, Yours Humanly, the Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul, he is able to help with housing, education and nutritional needs in both local and international communities. This is in addition to their support of St. Isidore, and directly helping priests in impoverished parts of India. Even closer to home, Derek utilizes his membership in the Catholic Charitable and Fraternal Organization, the Knights of Columbus, to also serve his parish and community. Additionally, Derek enjoys being a member of both the Rotary Club and a religious service group, the Militia of the Immaculata.
8 OCTOBER 2023 Resident Feature
Traveling adventures have always been an important part of the Hebert family life. Prior to getting married, Derek enjoyed Caribbean vacations, and now as a family, they’re regularly able to escape to Newport Beach to enjoy fun in the sun. The Hebert’s also enjoy spending time in Boston to visit Derek’s family and took their first family trip to Tahoe earlier this year.
In 2016, Anne and Derek knew they wanted to find a place that was a safe and family friendly town. They are so happy they chose the
beautiful westside of Danville to call home. The proximity to downtown, grandparents, St. Isidore School, as well as creating strong friendships with many of their neighbors, has solidified their choice to live here on the westside. The Hebert family would like to thank their neighbors and friends they have made in this community over the past 7 years. They are looking forward to new family adventures and having their children grow up in Danville, and we are lucky to have them!

Celebrating Halloween with a Loved One Experiencing Memory Loss
By Eunice O’Farrell, Executive Director, Carefield Pleasanton
Halloween is a time for fun and excitement for most people, but it can be a challenging time for seniors with Alzheimer’s. The scary costumes, decorations, and sounds associated with Halloween can be confusing and frightening for those experiencing memory loss.
Here are some tips for making Halloween safe and enjoyable for seniors with Alzheimer’s:
• Opt out of receiving trick or treaters. Have your loved one stay with you for the night so that trick or treaters do not disturb them. If this isn’t an option for you, post a sign over your loved one’s doorbell saying “Please do not disturb” and keep all front door lights off. The constantly ringing doorbell can cause confusion and agitation for your loved one.
• Keep decorations to a minimum. Too many decorations can be overwhelming and confusing. Choose simple, non-scary decorations that your loved one will enjoy.
• Avoid scary costumes. A costume that is too realistic or scary could frighten your loved one. Instead, choose a costume that is funny or whimsical.
• Be prepared for changes in behavior. Some people with Alzheimer’s may become more agitated or confused on Halloween. Be patient and understanding, and try to redirect their attention to something else.
Halloween can still be an enjoyable holiday for you and your loved one. Here are alternative activities:
Visit a pumpkin patch. Picking out a pumpkin can be a fun, peaceful and rewarding activity. It also makes for lovely family pictures.
Make Halloween cookies or treats. Baking cookies or making Halloween treats is a great way to spend time together and create memories. Creating old family recipes is a great way to keep
tradition, or you can keep it simple and have your loved one indulge in their favorite candy.
Look over old pictures of your childhood Halloween costumes. Looking over old pictures of you in costume with Mom or Dad can help connect them back to your parent-child relationship. You may catch a smile or a laugh, and even recall a memory together. This can also bring them back into the present where you can connect past Halloweens with the present-day.
The senior lifestyle consultants at Carefield Pleasanton are always available to answer your questions about memory care for your loved one, and the benefits of a community. Contact Carefield Pleasanton by calling (925) 750-8744 or visit www.CarefieldPleasanton.com today.
DANVILLE LIVING CA 13 Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses Expert Contributor
When Should a Home be Inspected?
By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, Realtor® at Compass
Home inspections have long been a part of the home buying process, with smart buyers bringing in an expert to check out a property, before they make a huge investment. Over the past couple of decades, in our local market, we’ve seen a significant shift towards home sellers having inspections done, prior to putting property on the market. What caused the shift?
In the Bay Area, home sellers have been fortunate (most of the time) to be operating in a strong Seller’s Market, meaning that supply & demand are not balanced, leaving buyers competing for properties and making “multiple offer” situations commonplace. When buyers compete with each other, one of the most common ways to make their offer the most attractive to a seller is to waive their right to an inspection contingency. Since sellers like the possibility of receiving such an offer, they will often have one or more inspections done prior to marketing, so that the reports are ready and available for buyers to review. Some sellers also like the approach of having inspections done a bit in advance of selling, so that they have time to make some repairs, prior to going on the market. While we are seeing pre-listing inspections as the norm right now, sellers are under no obligation to have inspections done.
Buyers beware. Depending on the condition, age and type of property being sold, it may be wise to inspect a lot more than what the seller has provided. If a general home inspection is the only report, you may also want to consider specialized inspections for things such as the roof, chimney, HVAC system, Wood Destroying Pests or foundation. Pay special attention to items in the report that state, “further inspection recommended.” In addition, many times the seller has not done the suggested repairs, so the inspection reports are representing an as-is status of the property. If the seller has hired someone to do repairs, it may also be worthwhile for the buyer to hire a home inspector to verify and check that the work was done properly.
As a buyer, it’s important to understand and evaluate the amount of risk that you are willing to take. The reality is that if you try to protect yourself with an inspection contingency and there are competing buyers, your offer might be rejected. If the home is well within your means and you feel comfortable that the inspections done are current, professional and thorough, then it may make sense to take on the risk. Depending on how your offer is structured, you may also choose to maintain the right to inspect, without an inspection contingency. If taking this approach, it would be wise to consult with a real estate attorney, first.
It’s important to note that not all home inspectors are the same. There is a big difference between a fairly new inspector who has completed a course in home inspection and perhaps one who has been inspecting homes for 20+ years. Some home inspectors are also licensed contractors or structural engineers. It’s worthwhile to check credentials and reviews.
Finally, when you own your home, it is wise to consider periodically having a home inspection. Unless you occasionally check out your crawl space or attic, there may be things going on in these areas that are best caught early. It’s sort of like going to the dentist for a regular checkup. For example, a small water leak, a damaged duct or termites are all problems that can easily be fixed when caught early. The longer they go unnoticed, the bigger the repairs will be.

Pumpkin Pie in a glass, with amaretto spiked whipped cream
By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010
It’s officially fall, which means it’s time for pie! I have lots of friends that are allergic to gluten, which can make desserts challenging in the fall when people are asking for pie. Not many gluten free pie crusts are that great, but this pie in a glass has everything I want. It’s gluten-free, it comes together in ten minutes, it’s only a few ingredients, and I don’t even have to turn on the oven. And, best of all, it tastes even better the next day, so feel free to make it the day before your next dinner party.
Serves 6-8
For the pie;
• 1 package instant vanilla pudding
• 1 1/4 cups cold milk
• 1 C. pumpkin purée
• 1 C. Cool Whip
• 1 tsp. Pumpkin pie spice, plus extra for garnish
16 OCTOBER 2023
Cooking Corner
For the amaretto spiked whipped cream;
• 1 C. heavy whipping cream
• 2 heaping tablespoons
powdered sugar
• 1 tsp. amaretto liqueur
• 1/2 TBS. vanilla extract
Putting it together;
Start by making the whip cream first. In a medium size bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, amaretto and vanilla using an electric mixer on high speed for five minutes, or until the cream thickens and forms stiff peaks. Refrigerate until needed. In another medium size bowl, combine the vanilla pudding and milk until blended. Then add the pumpkin purée, pumpkin pie spices and Cool Whip. Mix thoroughly until well combined. Spoon the mixture into individual glasses, then cover and refrigerate for at least three hours or overnight. Garnish with a heaping scoop of the homemade whipped cream and sprinkle with additional pie spices.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance

PI- ADORABLE THREE LEGGED PUPPY READY FOR HER NEW FOREVER HOME
Pi is a 6-7 month old puppy who is a bundle of love and energy. Unfortunately Pi came into the shelter with a serious injury to her front leg where she was likely hit by a car. After an extensive examination by our veterinarian, the team decided that the best course of action was to amputate the leg. Now Pi is unencumbered by a non-functional leg and free to be the precocious puppy that she is. And it hasn’t stopped her for one minute. Her recovery from her amputation and spay have gone extremely well, so this girl is ready to find a home which will give her the love and attention this girl deserves. In spite of her being a 3-legged puppy, Pi will love an active family that provides regular exercise and activities. She does well with other dogs.
All of TVAR’s foster dogs and pups like Pi are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. They all live in foster homes till adopted; this allows foster families to get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting - allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!
ZUKO- ADORABLE KITTY LOOKING FOR HIS NEW FOREVER HOME
Meet Zuko, a handsome white kitty cat with small orange tabby splashes on his head and tail. Zuko came from a large litter of 12 kittens, all of which looked slightly different! TVAR was luckily able to take his entire litter into one foster home and find homes for all his siblings. Zuko is the only one left who needs a forever home! He is a unique boy who loves to sit up straight on his hind legs with his front paws in the air and follows his foster mom around like a dog, always wanting in on the action. He loves to be petted and will give you a little love nibble when you stop as if asking you to continue loving him.
Zuko is about 10 months old now and patiently awaiting his forever home.
TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes
It is through the collaborative efforts of TVAR’s volunteers and foster families that these kittens, once vulnerable and in need, are now on a path toward a future brimming with hope, joy, and endless possibilities.
All of TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love, medical care, and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Cats, Kittens, Puppies and Dogs - and the Public . Without our TVAR Shelter Program Volunteers - so many more of these deserving animals would be lost.
Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance. TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

THE RISE OF Traditional Advertising IN 2023
By Jo Peek, Expert Contributor
Digital advertising exploded over the past decade as businesses of all sizes flocked to online platforms to market themselves. While many digital opportunities are highly effective and can help your business grow, traditional forms of advertising are a powerful tool that remain on the rise. By using print media in tandem with digital advertising, you create a winning combination that elevates your marketing plan above the competition.
BREAK THROUGH THE NOISE
Think outside of the box when it comes to your branding efforts. Consider going where your competition doesn’t already exist instead of competing in the same arena. One key advantage of print media is its ability to reach a hyperlocal audience on a consistent basis. It allows you to build awareness and loyalty by delivering your message right to the mailboxes of residents in the community. Break through the noise and create a well-rounded strategy by adding print media into your branding mix!
BOOST YOUR DIGITAL EFFORTS
Many business owners make the mistake of choosing one advertising medium over another versus creating an impactful mix of both. Implementing a strong print component can boost your digital presence as well. This way, when consumers see your business on social media or their search engine, they’re already familiar with your business and more likely to take action.1
TAP INTO A TRUSTED MARKET
It’s been shown that consumers trust print media more than any other form of advertising. In fact, according to MarketSherpa, 82% of American internet users trust print ads over other forms of advertising when making a purchasing decision.2 Building a well-balanced print and digital marketing strategy is a fantastic way to make a solid first impression and a lasting impact on potential customers.

The College Application. How Did This Get So …. Complicated, Competitive, Expensive?
By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach
Ifyou are a parent of a middle school or high school student, this article is for you. We have all said at some point in our parenting journey, “Things were so much easier and better when I was your age.” Guess what?! When it comes to college planning, you are right! To be successful in the college planning process, the earlier you and your child carve out a plan, the more success you will achieve. Here is a quick outline to start this journey:
• Your child’s grades and portfolio
• The application process
• The financial commitment
As a parent who wants your child to achieve their best self, you need to start now! Grades have always been a driver to the most competitive colleges. If your child is struggling, evaluate the issues early. Oftentimes, the struggle has to do with time management and how committed your child is to achieving competitive grades. Have a conversation with your child to better understand your child’s struggles. Don’t hesitate to meet with the school counselor/teachers to better understand the requirements and what they are observing to guide your child. There are also
many other resources that schools and outside programs provide. But what is most important, don’t blame the school or the teachers. Understand how you can be a team to help your child achieve.
Along with grades, your child’s portfolio has become essential to college entry. This portfolio is about how deeply your child has invested into his/her passion. The portfolio may include sports, music, volunteer service, leadership, or other activities and successes. The colleges want to hear about your child’s achievements. Portfolios are not about a “little bit of this and a little bit of that”. The universities want to hear about their commitment and challenges to success. What motivates your child in these activities? What has your child learned and how has your child grown and given back through their involvement?
Finally - the most difficult question is financial commitment. If your child is a high achiever and is planning to attend one of the most competitive universities, the price range can be anywhere from $35,000-$90,000 a year depending if your child is hoping for one of the powerhouse public programs in California or one of the many elite private campuses throughout the United States. EYHLifeCoach has partnered with some of the best institutions in Danville that can help guide a plan where you will not have to mortgage your home. Our partners can direct you to put your children through college while still being debt free. If possible, you want to avoid any types of loans to get your child through. To navigate the cost, each college has a Net Price Calculator. Go on their websites to obtain a strong, ballpark idea of the expenses you will be facing. Once you have some goals in place, or if you are still searching, reach out to EYHLifeCoach. We are highly trained in college planning, the application process, and, with our partners, have the best team to guide your financial commitment. Whether your child is 12 or 17, we can guide you in navigating your best choices.

Spooky Studying: 4 Colleges With Unique Fall Traditions
By Ava Cooyar, Teen Journalist
Do you love fall? If you are a high school senior (or a prepared underclassman), as the November 1st early decision and action college application deadline approaches, you may be making final choices about where to apply. If you find yourself enjoying the autumn air, Halloween, and the occasional fright, then you might find that one of these four colleges with unique fall traditions might be right for you.
Brown University’s Organ Night (Rhode Island)
What is spookier than an organ playing? Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, is especially known for its Halloween spirit. At midnight on Halloween, the whole school gathers to listen to a scary poem and a dramatic organ performance. They even have pumpkin painting contests and “Chew or Treat” where students get to pet costumed dogs and eat candy!
Roanoke College’s Ghost Class (Virginia)
Located in one of the most haunted states in the US, Roanoke College offers a very unique class– Ghosts and Human Perception. At the end, students will get to visit and stay the night at the supposedly haunted Monterey House to look for evidence of the paranormal. Scary!
Boston University and Salem (Massachusetts)
Boston University is keen on Halloween!
Located just 40 minutes from Salem (famous for the Salem Witch Trials in the 1600s, its hauntings, Hocus Pocus, and Bewitched), you will experience a Halloween to die for! But if you don’t want to stray that far from campus, Boston
has some infamous hauntings and one of the oldest graveyards in the country! You can also join BU’s annual Pumpkin Drop and test your physics knowledge.
UC Los Angeles’s All Hill Halloween (California)
If a brush with the paranormal might not be your cup of tea, UCLA offers a more wholesome Halloween event where 2,500 low-income children get to dress up and trick or treat from dorm to dorm. UCLA students even decorate their dorm halls and buy candy to give out for this fantastic event, the All Hill Halloween!
Whether your school of choice offers a class on ghosts or a community event, college is an excellent time to celebrate Halloween. Hopefully you found some spooky schools to add to your application list! Good luck in your eerie college search!

Goes on a Trip to Spain
By Melissa Durkee, Marketing
& Communications Director tor, Mustang Soccer
Members of our 2007 and 2008 Boys ECNL Teams recently traveled on the trip of their lifetime to Spain! Coach Dana Taylor provided an opportunity for members to go on a tour curated by Eture, a company that specializes in developing and providing soccer opportunities that include international competitive training and tournament tours, along with immersion in the Spanish culture to discover the uniqueness of Spanish cities. The players traveled to Barcelona, Peñíscola, and Valencia.
Alison Chandler, mother of Nate Chandler, an 08B ECNL player, really enjoyed the trip and felt it was a success on many levels. “The trip included a chaperone and a family option which allowed for the inclusion of many players. Although all the players have traveled on domestic chaperone trips before, all have not traveled internationally before to play soccer.” Alison thought the option to participate on their own terms was the best of both worlds. “As parents, along with a 13-yearold brother, who came along for fun, we were able to participate with the team when we wanted to participate; however, we were also able to explore the beautiful cities of Barcelona, Peñíscola, and Valencia, as well as ride the train through the countryside at our leisure. We especially enjoyed the food and culture and watching Nate improve in his soccer.” Nate was invited as a 2008 player to play with the impressive 2007 team, who are 3x ECNL Nor Cal Conference Champions, for the past three consecutive years. Alison noted, “This opportunity allowed Nate to learn a new position, be supported by talented players, and be forced to make challenging decisions against bigger/faster/sometimes 19-year-old players.” According to Nate Chandler, the Eture campus experience was special and memorable. He also
especially enjoyed, “the excitement before our first game in Peñíscola, all the cultural experiences, the castle tour, the beach day, and the FOOD!”
Alison and Nate both agreed, the hospitality shared by the Eture staff and the experience is nothing the players and their families have ever experienced before. “The players were able to participate in a small town celebration, were greeted after their first game with a barbecue welcome dinner, and Eture staff welcomed the players as if they were life-long friends. All of the cultural experiences, the tour of Camp Nou, and the soccer experiences of their trip allowed the boys to see life in Spain as a footballer.” Dana Taylor, coach of the 2007 and 2008 Boys ECNL Teams, feels, “Spain has it all - be it swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, walking the castle steps where the Crusaders and the Pope walked, seeing some of the top soccer stadiums, sampling the Spanish cuisine, or walking the old Roman City Streets of Valencia, which was just voted the #1 city in the world to visit! But to strap on your boots and play against Spanish players to test our skills and to do it with teammates, that are your brothers, makes it so special.” Special thanks to Alison Chandler, Nate Chandler, and coach Dana Taylor, for their time and insight into this special trip of a lifetime!

A Visit to the Oakland Roots Soccer Club
By Ricky Helton, Resident since 2004 | Photos by Ricky Helton Sports Photography
Irecently attended two Oakland Roots games and was impressed by the play on the field, and even more by their fan following in the stands. They had it all....drums beating and chant-like songs the entire game.... a complete melting pot of diversity. So awesome to watch and take it all in.
I originally wanted to share the Oakland Roots story because I’m aware of the things they’re doing to give back to the community. So much is not being reported, but I’ll let you do the homework on what they do. It’s pretty awesome. As for the play on the field, which was fun to watch...pretty competitive play as well! The Oakland roots have recently announced a goal to raise 2 million dollars to help build a new stadium next to the Oakland arena.
On September 13, 2023, they opened up an opportunity for regular people to become Co-owners through a crowd funding model with pretty modest buy-ins of $100, pretty cool! Here are few pictures from the 8/19/23 Colorado Springs Switchbacks (3-2) and the Sacramento Republic FC (1-0). Both games were played at CSU East Bay where the Roots and Souls have been playing temporarily.

Martin’s rugby journey continued to flourish at Quinnipiac University, where she played at the NCAA Div 1 level. Her contributions extended beyond the field, as she donned the mantle of a team leadership member, achieved the accolade of Collegiate All-American, and earned the crowning achievement of a national championship. Her collegiate rugby experience was not confined to the field; Weinstein’s leadership extended to the rugby team’s executive board for two years, alongside her commitment to four on-campus jobs. Weinstein’s passion for empowerment resonates both on and off the pitch, a quality that aligns seamlessly with The Oaks’ ethos. Beyond rugby, her professional expertise lies in event coordination, a skillset that promises to enrich the overall experience of The Oaks’ players and supporters.
A Shared Vision:
The alignment of Grace Martin’s extensive rugby journey with the vibrant energy and leadership prowess of Katrina Weinstein forms an alliance that holds immense promise. With an unwavering commitment to fostering opportunities, nurturing growth, and fostering camaraderie, The Oaks’ Women’s Rugby program embarks on a new era under the stewardship of these remarkable coaches. As The Oaks welcomes Head Coach Grace Martin and Assistant Coach Katrina Weinstein to the helm of our Girls High School rugby program, our excitement is palpable. With a united spirit, we look forward to charting a path of success, empowerment, and inspiration, both on and off the pitch.

This includes multiple free Rugby clinics from September through November, with the Lady Oaks season starting around January. Oh, to be young again
By Michael Copeland, Resident since 2002
As we wrap up the summer and I surpass another birthday (61), I recently reflected back over the last few months and the things I did which made me feel young again. I realize that age is just a number and feeling youthful is but a state of mind. That said, I truly believe there are activities and experiences each of us engage in to help us recreate a time in our lives when we felt… well, young. Regardless how old we actually are, it never hurts to feel the zeal of youth running through our veins.
In my case, youthful occurs whenever I ride my bike, dive into a backyard swimming pool or attend a concert. There’s something about these three activities that are flashbacks to my youth and a simpler time growing up in the suburban confines of Mountain View, California. Getting on my bike today is a rolling memory of the freedom I felt while riding my Schwinn Stingray through the neighborhood, to the park or on a treacherous journey to the mall. Swimming in someone’s backyard pool was such an extravagant treat given that my sisters and I were the stock of blue-collar working-class families. As a kid, most of our swimming took place at the Rengstorff Recreation Center or on Moffett Field Navy Air Base with a million other kids with the same proclivity to water recreation. For someone to have a pool in their backyard was like swimming in the Beverly Hillbillies’ cement pond. Oddly, I still get that euphoric feeling when I first dive into any backyard swimming pool. It’s like an aquatic time machine. Finally, attending a concert can bring back that same giddy excitement of seeing and hearing one of my favorite bands or a specific artist in person (From the Jackson Five in 1974 to Journey, Foreigner and Styx 1978-80). Attending a live show today transports me back to those days of listening to KFRC, KOME or KSJO the radio or buying a record album/cassette tape (pre CD and way before streaming) at Tower Records or the Wherehouse. At a concert I feel the youthful freedom of swaying to the music, singing at the top of my lungs and even air-guitaring with the best of them. It might also have
something to do with the wafting aroma of our now legal relaxant.
Here are some of the activities that a few of my friends and colleagues shared with me that make them feel young again.
• Camping under stars, Tom C. (62)
• Roller skating, Lizz Z. (undisclosed)
• Walking my dog, Stan W. (71)
• Water and snow skiing, Craig N. (65)
• Working out at the gym, Annie O. (none of anyone’s business)
• Jumping on a trampoline, Jennifer E. (50ish)
• Playing catch with a baseball or football, Chris F. (64)
• Fishing, Ben S. (75)
• Watching Scary Movies, Gloria M. (forget about it)
• Baking cookies, Julie R. (never mind)
• Coloring, Laila L. (pass on the age thing)
• Attending high school football games, Blake C. (63)
• Mowing the lawn, Moondog (63)
• Dressing Barbies, Mitzi C. (don’t even ask)
• Enjoying a Slurpee from 7-11, Dave P. (71)
• Visiting Disneyland, Claire C. (24)
These are but a few examples of what makes certain people feel young again. I’m confident if you’re reading this article there’s something that triggers that feeling in you. We all have the ability to be young at heart, but it never hurts to engage in something that brings it out in us because in the immortal words of Rod Stewart (79) from his song entitled Young Turks, “Life is so brief and time is a thief and like a fist full of sand it can slip right through your hands, Young hearts be free tonight”.

A Fresh Start for Fall
By Stephen J. Ronan MD FACS
Asthe fall season approaches, many of us are looking for ways to rejuvenate our appearance and step into the holiday season with renewed confidence. Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa offers a range of cosmetic procedures that can help you achieve a more youthful and revitalized look. Below, we explore some popular surgical treatments that can leave you looking your best just in time for fall.
1. Liposuction:
If you’re looking to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat and achieve a more contoured figure, liposuction is a highly effective solution. This procedure removes excess fat from areas like the abdomen, thighs, hips, and arms, enhancing your overall body shape. Liposuction is a relatively quick procedure, typically lasting from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the extent of treatment. Recovery times may vary, but most patients can resume normal activities within a few days, with visible results becoming more apparent as swelling subsides.
2. Rhinoplasty: Balance Your Facial Harmony
Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a “nose job,” is a routine cosmetic procedure designed to enhance facial harmony by correcting the shape and size of the nose. I perform an Open or Structure Rhinoplasty, which is a more precise and modern approach that provides a stronger and aesthetically pleasing result. The incisions for this type of rhinoplasty are strategically placed to minimize scarring, and they typically blend seamlessly. This procedure not only addresses external aesthetic concerns but can also tackle internal functional issues like obstruction and septal deviation. Rhinoplasty usually takes between 60 to 90 minutes to complete, with a recovery period of approximately one week.
3. Face and Neck Lift:
As we age, the skin on our face and neck loses elasticity, accompanied by natural fat and muscle tone loss. A facelift and neck lift combination can help turn back the clock and restore a more youthful appearance. At Blackhawk Plastic Surgery we employ a modern short scar technique for facelifts, minimizing the incision to achieve a natural look and a faster recovery. This procedure often involves the addition of fat to areas like the lower lid and cheekbones, counteracting the effects of natural fat loss over time. The duration of face and neck lift procedures varies from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the surgery. Each patient’s unique needs are carefully considered, and the specifics of the procedure, including recovery time, will be discussed during the initial consultation.
Schedule a Consultation
If you’re intrigued by the possibilities of liposuction, rhinoplasty, face or neck lifts, or any other cosmetic procedure, we invite you to schedule a complimentary consultation with us. Our entire team of medical and aesthetic professionals are committed to helping you achieve your goals. Contact our office at 925-7365757 to arrange your consultation and embark on your journey to a refreshed and revitalized appearance this fall.
