Meet the Thaw Family
Bay Area natives focused on family, fun and service
By Anne Angstenberger, Resident since 2006
Photos provided by Thaw family
Bill and Christina, both Bay Area natives, met through mutual friends while attending Grace Bible Church in Pleasant Hill, but had not yet met one another yet. Christina and Bill were introduced by friends, the Cheungs, who also live in Danville. This led to a group dinner, a few couple dinners, then eventually Bill asked Christina for a solo lunch date, and the rest was history! The two were married at the same church (still today, both Bill and Christina teach Sunday School for 2nd and 3rd graders at Grace Bible Church) followed by a reception at the famous Colombo Club in Oakland. Christina comes from a big Italian family, so the location could not be more perfect!
Having grown up in Pinole, Martinez and Pleasant Hill, Christina attended Walnut Creek Christian Academy, Berean Christian High School, DVC and then was very excited to transfer to Seattle Pacific University in Washington state. Having been raised in a hard working class family, Christina was very proud to be the first to attend college. Growing up the oldest sibling
with 3 younger brothers, Christina spent her youth babysitting, swimming, the piano, as well as learning how to cook at a young age. This proved to be useful training for her days nannying and cleaning dorm halls in college. She worked extremely hard to keep up her studies as well pay the bills when times were tight, something that has impacted Christina into the person she is today. After her graduation, Christina has mostly been working on the business side of Kaiser Permanente since 2002. Currently, she serves as an Enterprise Sales Leader driving channel and business development solutions to grow membership.
Raised in Morgan Hill, Bill spent most of his childhood through high school years playing baseball and football for Live Oak High School. Also the oldest sibling, with 2 younger twin brothers, Bill grew up the son of school teachers in the San Jose Unified School District. Having their summers and school breaks free gave them the opportunity to spend many holidays in together. Bill’s grandfather built a family cabin near Coulterville, which sits at the foot of the Sierras. To this day, theThaw family is still able to enjoy the fruits of his labor by taking their own children to the property where they run free in creeks and rivers and all the beautiful nature. Even though Bill eventually hung up his baseball jersey once he attended San Jose State, he is filled with dreams and excitement thinking of the day when he can coach their son Walker on the baseball diamond.
That day will certainly come soon, as Bill and Christina have 3 sweet children (Evelyn, 7, Giuliana, 6, and Walker, 4) growing up and thriving in Danville. Evelyn and Giuliana are both active on the Del Amigo swim team, as well as play musical instruments. As luck would have it, the friends that introduced Bill and Christina years ago have two sons that now teach their girls the Suzuki method of violin and piano. Giuliana has also proven to be a natural artist and spends much of her free time perfecting her craft. Both girls also spend time participating in a local chapter of American Heritage Girls (a patriotic scout organization) with Christina. Little brother Walker is a Little Dynamite on the Del Amigo swim team and all three Thaw kiddos look forward to playing Mustang soccer this fall. The family pet, Bella, an 8 year old Spinone Italiano, loves walking and jumping into puddles on the trail while the family scoots and bikes their way around town. Some of the family’s favorite travel spots are visiting Christina’s family in El Dorado Hills, Palm Desert, exploring their family property near Groveland with Grandma and spending days on Lake Tahoe, swimming, walking and biking. Bill and Christina also have fond memories of their honeymoon in Kauai and even took their whole family last year! Another fun memory Bill and Christina share is the very first time Bill had been out of the country was when they traveled to France on their “babymoon” with Evelyn. It was in France

where they first felt the bite of a “travel bug.” Enjoying the countryside, French Riviera and glorious food while they were on the search for the best croissant.
The Thaw family loves their home here on the westside. Right before the pandemic, in September 2019, Bill and Christina had been living in Martinez and reached out to their realtor, Robert Farrar, looking for a change. He suggested the westside of Danville would be a perfect fit for the family. Having less traditional roles, as Bill is the stay at home parent and the children attend a homeschool pod, the Thaws knew finding the perfect home in a neighborhood with young and active families was a priority. After about a year of searching, Bill and Christina found a “fixer upper” on the westside with a flat yard and the long term ability to build their dream home. After a walk on the trail seeing the activity of neighbors and all the life, accessibility and amenities the neighborhood had to offer, they put in an offer and sealed the deal on their new home! They are currently planning a full house remodel with a dream kitchen, complete with a separate bread oven and island to roll out pasta for all their family and friends to enjoy as they host their loved ones. During Covid, Christina gifted Bill with the book “Salt, Flour and Water” and quickly became a levain master for the family. In addition to bread Bill loves making homemade ice cream such as “Tin Roof Sunday” (Chocolate Hazelnut, Matcha Green Tea, and even Prune Armagnac).
The Thaws adore the life they are creating as a family here on the westside of Danville. The community they have met at Del Amigo pool, their
neighbors, and walking downtown has all proven that they made the right choice to raise their family in Danville. They love their local favorite restaurants (Fosters Freeze, Sushi, Yo’s and The Peasants Courtyard) and seeing many of their neighbors as they complete their daily walk. Living on “the loop” where Alamo residents travel their street to get back on the trail or head downtown, has been a fun reminder of what a wonderful location they chose. Their children love chatting to people as they pass by, asking their names, about their dogs and eventually the whole family is joining in. Bill and Christina would love to thank their community for the warm welcome and look forward to sharing in many more memories together here on the westside. Be sure to say hello to the Thaw family when you see them around town!

The Top 5 Must-Adds For Your Back To School Playlist
By Kaylan Rizkalli, Member of the Danville Youth Council
The right kind of music can set the right kind of tone for your day and decide what mood you’re in. Music is essential for teens to get through everyday tasks, whether it’s to push you through those 90 minutes of practice, or to get you through the 90 minutes of homework waiting for you. With the rest of the new school year up ahead, it is crucial to have a strong playlist filled with the best songs to help you through the year. Every song needs to be cheerful to keep you motivated, but also slightly calming in order to keep you focused on the assignment at hand and not stress you out. Following these two simple criteria, here are five energetic songs that all students must have on their 2023-24 school year playlist.
Adore You - Harry Styles
Adore You by Harry Styles captures all the good vibes you need when studying, and is a great song to sing along to. This song brings back memories of sunny days, which can be much needed during a long study session. You are sure to know most, if not all, of the words to this catchy song due to how popular
it became, and its relaxing beat will allow you to produce your best work. The vocals in this song are amazing, making it such a fun listen and it truly pumps you up to power through your homework.
They Don’t Know About Us - One Direction
Moving back in time from Adore You to the wonderful time when Harry Styles and the rest of One Direction were actually going in one direction, this amazing song will ensure that you get through your homework at a steady pace – one that matches this song’s lively beat. One Direction took the world by storm with their second studio album, “Take Me Home” and for all the right reasons. This bubbly song will get you excited to work and send you back into your One Direction phase. Its energetic pace will motivate you to fly through your work without feeling a single bit of it!
Mine - Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version)
For all my Swifties out there, this song is just for you. With a simple chorus that anyone can follow along to and cheery lyrics, Mine is perfect for studying. It gets you into a working mood while keeping you entertained enough to be able to focus on the task at hand. The song itself is upbeat and pop with fun background vocals. Mine brings all the party to your study session and is a feel-good song.
Deja Vu - Olivia Rodrigo
With Olivia Rodrigo’s new album coming out on September 8th, it’s the perfect time to revisit her first album, “Sour,” which has some incredible songs on it. My personal favorite, which happens to be the best for studying, is Deja Vu. The lyrics of this song paint a unique story while still remaining as background music to your work. Additionally, this song has a great bridge that really packs a punch and boosts your energy. The lyrics of this song are iconic and overall, it is a great tune to study to.
Dance The Night (From Barbie The Album) - Dua Lipa
Everyone knows how it feels to be two hours into a study session and be as confused, or even more confused, than when you started. It’s in moments like these when you need to pull out your greatest trick and listen to a song that will inspire you to keep going. Dance The Night from the new Barbie movie will do just that. This peppy song will push you across the finish line or give you a much needed dance break, which is perfect for your school playlist.
All in all, these songs will guarantee you the best study session ever and are mustadds to your playlist for the new school year. Even through your crazy workload and long practices, these songs are sure to keep you energized and awake.

I Can Do That!
Performing Arts Center is Expanding!
By Shayna Ronen, Executive Director, Resident since 2020
Did you hear the news? The I Can Do That! Performing Arts Center in Danville is expanding….again!! ICDT! is a 7 year old, female founded, non profit with the mission of using the performing arts as a vehicle to empower our local youth community. We teach acting, singing, and dancing with year round opportunities in productions, camps, and classes for students ages 4-18.
The sad reality is that the arts are disappearing from our local schools and communities. We see our expansion as a critical move to ensure students in the East Bay and beyond have access to a high quality arts education. The immense value of introducing children to the arts during their formative years is widely recognized, as it instills vital life skills like creativity, collaboration, selfexpression, resilience, and emotional intelligence.
At I Can Do That!, our students are creating a positive identity within themselves, and paying it forward to their peers, building each other up and creating a community of love, encouragement, and growth. Not only are they being challenged and learning, they know they have a place where they belong.
14 SEPTEMBER 2023 Local Arts
ICDT! is currently in the process of expanding its presence in Danville with the addition of two new studios and a spacious courtyard to complement our existing space on Diablo Rd. Excitingly, construction is scheduled to commence in August, and we have plans to unveil this new wing to the public in January 2024. To bring this ambitious project to fruition, we are on a mission to raise $500,000 by the end of the year.
We would love to extend the opportunity to meet with our Executive Director, Shayna Ronen, for a tour of the Performing Arts Center as well as the new site plan and talk more about our mission and the impact ICDT! is making in our local community.

TVAR Dog/Puppy Foster Program: Coffee- Adorable, Fun-Loving Youngster
Coffee is a 1-year-old, Spaniel/Dachshund mix. He weighs 13 pounds. He has been a nice guest in his foster home where he has mastered house training, sleeps in a crate at night, and he’s learning commands. He’s a no-fuss foodie, and settles down for naps while his foster family works nearby. Coffee will love an active family that provides regular exercise and activities. He does well with other energetic, similar size dogs.
All of TVAR’s foster dogs and pups like Coffee are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. They all live in foster homes till adopted; this allows foster families to get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home settingallowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!
TVAR Foster Kitten/Cat Program:
Mama Jackie
Mama Jackie, named because she looks like a Jack-O-Lantern, is a beautiful and unique buff tabby cat who is mom to three handsome grey tabby boys. Jackie’s right eye was underdeveloped and infected when she was surrendered to the animal shelter with her kittens. TriValley Animal Rescue was able to take her and her family in, remove the eye and
alleviate her pain, and provide her with love and support in a foster home. Jackie will now be able to flourish when she finds her forever home. She loves a good head bump and chin scratch and will curl up next to you after you feed her, chirping and purring.
TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes It is through the collaborative efforts of TVAR’s volunteers and foster families that these kittens, once vulnerable and in need, are now on a path toward a future brimming with hope, joy, and endless possibilities.
Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance.
TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. Embracing Change, Empowerment Through a Growth Mindset
By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach
“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” -
Alan Watts
Yes - I am going to state the obvious - life is full of change. Some change is anticipated and we have time to embrace the sun and celebrate or to prepare for the storm. But too often change can be unexpected or not what we anticipated. For instance, take the person who has invested in a 30 year career and now counts the months, weeks and days until retirement. Secured financially, life seems good. But six months later it occurs to the retiree what has been left on the table - friends, the career title, daily routines…respect, meaning, and to some degree - a lifelong passion.
As a transitional executive life coach, I was inspired to partner with a client who was in the midst of developing her college profile when she unexpectedly lost her beloved grandmother. Through her deep depression, drowning in grief, she took hold of her grandmother’s passions - her love of books and growth. In the client’s college essay she wrote, “I envisioned my grandmother in the lines I read. She empowered me in the words I wrote.” This client embraced change and used her grief to empower her academics and her college applications.
Change is an opportunity to rejoice in the dance. Change is meant to inspire and to strengthen our core of who we are and who we can be. We may not anticipate what we lost as our youngest packs for college or as we realize we need something more in our life. The choices we made years ago, like that perfect dress we wore in our twenties, may not fit anymore - or at least not highlight and bring out the best of you.
Change is an opportunity to review all your options - to utilize a growth mindset to know you have choices. What an exciting time to explore something new or pull out your original goals and recreate what makes you your best! Change will always be here. The quicker you embrace, the more powerful you will be!
If any of this resonates, we can talk. EYHLifeCoach partners with clients in their life transitions to relight the passions sometimes we put aside in our journey. Call or email today.
Christina Dalton is the Principal of EYH Life Coach. She applies her own personal and career transitions along with several degrees and credentials to provide insight and knowledge into the coaching experience. Asour loved ones get older, it’s important to make new memories along with reflecting on old ones. September 10th is National Grandparents’ Day, here are some fun tips on how you can celebrate as a family;
Engage in a fun activity over dinner. This can help switch up your typical family dinner into a memorable moment. Easy to use and fun to answer, conversation cards can facilitate questions between all generations. With multiple options for purchase online, you can discover new facts about your loved ones along with lots of laughs. Write down or record your loved one’s answers for a lasting memory.
Be flexible. If your grandparents have any physical limitations, be flexible with your plans. If you are spending time outside together, be sure to include a place to sit and lots of breaks. You can also opt for lower impact activities like watching their favorite movie at home or having a Grandparents’ Day celebration in the morning versus the full day.
Bond over passing down knowledge. One of the greatest gifts that one generation can give to another is knowledge. If mom or dad is an expert at painting, cooking or have a certain hobby they are passionate about, have their grandchildren join them for some bonding time. If your loved one needs some assistance, you can help with setting up the activity or modifying it. For example, if grandma loves making dumplings, you can prepare all the ingredients beforehand.
Create something tangible together. If grandma likes to paint, have the grandchildren create a painting with her. If grandpa likes to garden, have the whole family participate in planting a tree or creating a sitting area in the garden together. Creating memories that last can include physical items that you can look back on for years to come.
Be present. Refrain from checking your phone or laptop when spending time together as a family. Especially since your loved one may come from a generation where this is not typical. Put away your phone and computer and focus on family.
Show your appreciation. Have your kids write their grandparents a card for Grandparents Day, create a video message, or an art project with their handprints. You can also write a card for them as well showing that you care.
The senior lifestyle consultants at Carefield Pleasanton are always available to answer your questions about memory care for your loved one, and the benefits of a community. Contact Carefield Pleasanton by calling (925) 750-8744 or visit www.CarefieldPleasanton.com today.

Buying your next home BEFORE you sell is possible and easier than you think!
By W. Todd Galde, CrossCountry Mortgage, LLC
Feeling Stuck? Ready to Move but You Don’t Want to Sell First?
Buying your next home BEFORE you sell is possible and easier than you think! You are ready to make the move, downsizing to a smaller home, transitioning to a retirement community, moving to be closer to the grandkids, or maybe relocating out-of-state. Whatever the dream is, you are ready!
You may have even found “the one” but you are feeling stuck because you think you have to sell your current home first and then you think of everything you have to do to make that happen, like moving all of the things you’ve collected over the years to storage, doing repairs and renovations, replacing your weathered furniture with a more contemporary look… and you give up the dream because you feel stuck!
There is good news for people feeling stuck: with enough equity, you can buy your next home BEFORE having to sell your current home. In fact, did you know that over 75% of homeowners in Danville have enough equity and can buy their next home before they must sell? 75%! Are YOU one of them?
If you are considering moving here are some of the advantages of buying your next home before selling your current one.
1. Locate your dream home now
When you are able to buy a new home before selling your current one, you have more time to explore different properties and neighborhoods without feeling rushed. You can take your time to find the home of your dreams without worrying about the added pressure of having to move out of your current home quickly… and your offer on the new home will be non-contingent on selling your old home!
2. Avoiding temporary housing costs
Having to live in temporary housing until you can find your next home can be expensive and inconvenient, especially if you have a family or pets. When you buy a new home first, you can avoid these costs and move directly into your new home.
3. Less pressure to accept lower offers
When you have moved out and your current home is fixed up and properly staged, you’re in a better position to negotiate with potential buyers. More buyers will be interested in your home and this competition will ensure you get the highest possible offer.
4. Avoiding a rushed move
When you buy your new home before selling your current one, you can take your time to pack, organize, and move at your own pace without worrying about strict deadlines.
5. Ability to make renovations or repairs
If you buy your new home before selling your current one, you have the flexibility to renovate the new home before moving in, fix up the old home without you in it, or both! In either case, you won’t have to deal with the inconvenience of living in a construction zone while you’re making these changes.
Buying your next home before selling your current home can have significant benefits. By giving yourself more time to find your dream home, avoiding temporary housing costs, and having the flexibility to make renovations, you can ensure that your next move is a smooth and stress-free process. Additionally, with less pressure to accept lower offers and avoiding a rushed move, you can make sure that you get the best price for your current home and enjoy the process of moving into your new one.

Homeownership is a Hedge Against Inflation
By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, Realtor® at Compass
Atsome point, you’ve probably seen charts that compare the cost of buying a home versus the cost of renting. These are often designed for first time homebuyers, to see which option makes more sense. They take into consideration ongoing carrying expenses such as property taxes, insurance and HOA dues, along with the projected monthly payments on a loan.
One major feature that these comparisons usually do not show is that ownership protects the owner from inflation. For example, let’s say that the comparison is for a renter who is paying $5,000 per month in rent and wants to see what $5,000 per month will buy, instead. Often times in our area the rental price will “buy” more home than a $5,000 budget for ownership. This can dampen a renter’s enthusiasm for wanting to buy. However, what the comparison is usually not showing is the likely inflation of rent values and home values over time, compared to a fixed rate mortgage.
With a fixed rate mortgage, the cost of $5,000 can stay fixed for 30 years. While there are no guarantees for where prices will go in the future, we can learn from the past. If we look back about 15 years, the home that is renting for $5,000 today, was renting for about $2,500. Go back 30 years and the same home was renting for about $1,400. It’s a pretty safe bet that rents will continue to rise and that home values will increase over time.
The renter who chooses to buy today, instead of continuing to rent, can opt for a fixed rate loan and “lock in” their housing expense for the next 30 years. Of course, if interest rates drop significantly, they will likely choose to refinance their loan and end up with a smaller payment. Either way, they have the security of a fixed payment that will not go up with inflation. The ultimate benefit is that once the loan is paid off, the homeowner will no longer have a monthly payment to make and will only be paying property taxes, insurance and maintenance. The renter who chooses not to buy will likely find themselves paying significantly more in rent, in the future. In addition, they will not have the opportunity to build wealth through equity in a home.
The homeowner will enjoy the benefits of being able to improve and customize a home to their own taste. They’ll also enjoy being in control of timing, should they wish to make a move, versus the renter who has to wonder if their landlord will renew a lease each year and/ or how much the rent will go up!
Every buying situation is unique. Please feel free to reach out to me at 925-964-5010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@Compass.com for a custom analysis of your options and the timing that will likely bring you the best results. Even if you’re not ready to buy today, it’s never too early to start planning for success.
Lisa’s consultative and solutions based approach to real estate has been impressing her clients for 32 years. Lisa is an East Bay native and longtime Danville resident, where she’s been actively involved in the community while raising her two children. DRE#01111126

The Basics of Skin Cancer
By Adam Wallach, M.D., Wallach Derma Center
Thegood news is that most skin cancer is highly curable. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer diagnosed and grows slowly over months to years. It often appears as “acne that won’t go away” or an enlarging red bump. On occasion, it will repeatedly bleed with simple acts like washing the face. When you see such a lesion skip the DIY treatment and go see your local dermatologist to describe what you noticed. BCC is quite easy to eliminate with simple in-office procedures or even chemotherapeutic creams. There are a few more aggressive variants of BCC that can be locally deforming if, for example, they occur on the nose and were to invade the cartilage. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the first cousin to BCC. It often appears as an a symmetric flat or raised pink growth that slowly enlarges and is typically asymptomatic. It, too, is often easy to treat but can be more dangerous if it invades past the surface or occurs on a mucus membrane. Both BCC and SCC are strongly correlated to sun exposure, although not exclusively.
The most notorious skin cancer is malignant melanoma. Unlike basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which typically grow radially or along the surface, melanoma can invade vertically into the deeper levels of the skin more quickly and thus has a much more aggressive capability. If caught early, melanoma is highly curable with a simple surgical excision, but if it invades past the surface, the treatment can become more complex necessitating the need for lymph node removal. The depth of invasion of malignant melanoma correlates strongly with survival. Although sun exposure plays a role in the development of malignant melanoma, there appear to be more genetic underpinnings to this cancer. Hence, the reason why patients can develop melanoma not only in sun exposed areas but also between the toes, on the buttocks or any sun-protected areas of the body for that matter. Melanoma can also occur in the retina so make sure you get your eyes checked yearly.
If you have a family or personal history of melanoma, get your skin checked twice a year by a reputable dermatologist rather than your internist. In addition, the self-exam is a critical part of detection because you see your skin daily. I recommend looking at yourself in a full-length mirror with a handheld mirror to help see the backside of your body. What are you looking for? You may have heard about the ABCDE’s of melanoma (area, border, color, diameter, and evolving), but that’s a tough acronym to use as a practical tool. What I stress is knowing your skin and looking for the ‘lone wolf’ or the one or two moles that look different than the rest. Anything that is growing rapidly, bleeds, appears asymmetric or that just gets your attention should be discussed with your dermatologist. If you’re going to have a melanoma, you want to catch it early while it is still superficial, and it’s easy to treat.
The best strategy for avoiding these cancers is to limit UV exposure and to be vigilant about detecting them early. BCC and SCC rarely kill you, but they can leave disfiguring scars. While there is evidence to support the use of daily oral nicotinamide (a form of Vit B3) 500mg twice daily may reduce your chances of developing BCC and SCC type cancers, the surest way to reduce your chances of developing all types of skin cancer is to protect yourself and be self aware. I don’t recommend using fun new phone apps to help diagnose your undefined bumps or to distinguish benign moles from melanoma, although I would encourage you to do a bit of study to understand the differences. Visit your local dermatologist who hopefully will spend a bit of time educating you on what to look for. The one app that I can recommend is Miiskin produced by the Skin Cancer Foundation which helps you track the appearance of a mole or lesion over time and provides some solid educational advice.

“Who Dat” Jambalaya!
By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010
Ifyou’ve been avoiding making jambalaya at home due to its intimidating nature, I want you to pause and listen to me right now….It’s not hard. I made it for the first time in16 years the other day, and a flood of beautiful memories came rushing back to me. The layers of flavor that rush in with the first bite, mixed with a bouquet of spices, make this dish so memorable. By the time the meal is over, you think your tongue went on an adventure. Now, I call this “hot jambalaya” because it is my interpretation of what a pleasant heat should be. Any chef will tell you that spicy food isn’t supposed to be painful, but exciting. I encourage you to adjust the spices to your comfort level, and always remember that you can add more spices later. This dish is even better the next day so be sure to save those leftovers for tomorrow’s lunch.
Hot Jambalaya
You will need;
• 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
• 1 chicken breast, or 2 thighs diced into bite size pieces 4
Andouille sausage links, sliced
• 1 yellow onion, diced
• 1 cup green bell pepper, diced
• 1 cup red bell pepper, diced
• 2 celery ribs, chopped
Putting it together;
• 1 cup sliced okra, or Italian green zucchini
• 4 to 6 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1 can diced tomato
• 1 teaspoon each dried oregano and thyme
• 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
• 2 to 3 tablespoons Cajun seasoning (plus extra if you want it hotter)
• 1/2 teaspoon red pepper, flake
• 1 1/2 cups, uncooked white rice, rinsed well
• 3 cups chicken broth
• 1 pound raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
• Sliced green onion for garnish
• Hot sauce for garnish
Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large Dutch oven and cook the chicken for 4-6 minutes; remove to a plate. Then add the sausage to the hot pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, then remove to the chicken plate. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil and sauté the onion, bell peppers, celery, and okra/zucchini for 4-6 minutes or until your vegetables soften up. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add in the tomatoes, thyme, oregano, red pepper flake, Worcestershire sauce, and Cajun seasoning. Turn the heat up to high and add the chicken and sausage back into the pot and stir. Pour in the rice and chicken broth. Season with salt and pepper to and add extra spices if you want it spicier. Once it comes to a boil, turn the heat down to low and cover for 20 to 30 minutes undisturbed. Once the rice is cooked through, place the shrimp on top of the jambalaya and cover again, allowing it to cook for 6 to 7 more minutes. Once the shrimp is cooked through, give the jambalaya a good stir before serving right out of the Dutch oven. Garnish with green onion and more hot sauce, if desired.

Fred ‘Fritz’ Scharff Golf Tournament Returns
By Melissa Durkee, Marketing & Communications Director, Mustang Soccer
Fred
‘Fritz’ Scharff’s involvement with Mustang Soccer began in 1980 when his youngest daughter, Ashley, wanted to play Al Caffodio, just like her older sister, Kirsten. Even though he did not have an ounce of soccer coaching experience and because there was no coach, Fritz stepped up for the U10 Mustang Thunderbirds. He continued to coach this same team for 10 years, won three state cup championships, and sent a large portion of the team off to play in college. During this same time period, Fritz also held many positions on the Mustang Soccer Board and Mustang Soccer became one of the biggest parts and joys of his life. With the Thunderbirds all away in college, Fritz found great joy in going to Osage Park to watch soccer games on the weekends. On one of those glorious spectator days, he was recruited to help coach another group of girls and again stayed with them through their U18 year. Fritz then took several years off from coaching, but when his daughter, Ashley, moved back to Danville with her husband and newborn baby, Lauren. They decided to coach and did so together for 8 years until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. Fritz was a very successful coach and proud of his positive impact on many girls’ lives. During his tenure, he gave over 25 years of service to the club, strictly as a volunteer. Fritz passed away on February 14, 2014, at the age of 71. The annual tournament was named in honor of Fritz the fall before his passing, in 2013.
Please join us for a fantastic opportunity as our community comes together to celebrate our club and a true Mustang Soccer legend!

There’s a new sport in town!
By Ricky Helton, Resident since 2004 | Photos by Ricky Helton Sports Photography
Earlierthis year the CIF announced their endorsement of a new Varsity Sport, Girls Flag Football!
It didn’t take long for Chad Cochran of SRVHS to make this opportunity a reality for these young ladies at SRVHS as he is now the new Head Coach of Varsity Flag Football at SRVHS. The amount of work and time it has taken him and his coaching staff in the last few months is truly amazing and appreciated by these young ladies.
I had the opportunity to attend a few of their tryouts, and the first thing that stuck out the was the smiles these young ladies were having while competing for that roster spot. I truly believe this sport is going to grow so much into next season. So exciting to have the first CIF Varsity Flag Football team right here in Danville!

Pickleball Is Growing In Danville!
By Brandon Mackie, Co-founder of Pickleheads
Pickleball,
a delightful fusion of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, is quickly winning the hearts of Danville’s residents. The sport has really taken off in the town, which is now home to pickleball courts and a vibrant playerbase. Both a joy to play and easy to learn, Pickleball’s growing popularity in Danville is a remarkable testament to the power of a sport that brings people together.
What Is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport played on a compact court with a perforated ball and low net. The game is usually played in doubles, and players score points by hitting the ball over the net, aiming to land it within the opposing team’s court boundaries. The smaller court size and slower ball speed make it more accessible and less physically demanding than other racket sports. This enables people of varying abilities and ages to learn how to play pickleball with
ease. Pickleball’s rise in popularity can be attributed to its inclusive nature and social atmosphere, which has helped foster a strong sense of community among players. In 2022 alone, over 36.5 million pickleball players played the sport in the US. Courts have started to appear in parks and sports facilities to cater to the increasing demand for the game in Danville.
Where To Play Pickleball In Danville
Danville has venues where both tourists and local residents can play pickleball. If you need some help with your search, check out this list of pickleball courts near you.
Osage Park Pickleball Courts
Osage Park boasts two outdoor courts with permanent lines and nets, ensuring a high-quality playing experience. Moreover, the courts are freely accessible to the public, meaning players can enjoy the sport without any costs involved.
Diablo Country Club
With four dedicated outdoor courts featuring permanent lines and nets, the Diablo Country Club offers an exceptional playing environment. A membership provides access to amenities like restrooms, water, well-lit courts, professional trainers, food options, locker rooms, and an on-site pro shop. With all this on offer, it’s definitely worth checking out!
Final Thoughts
For both curious newcomers and seasoned players, pickleball offers a unique blend of camaraderie and competitive gameplay that’s hard to resist. Find a court in Danville and experience the joy of the country’s fastest-growing sport!
