EDITOR’S NOTE “ Using the special man in my life as an example, I’ve been able to focus on his distinct style while keeping the fundamentals of being a hands on dad in mind. He is not only the health conscious type, but an athlete who watches sports highlights on repeat, he is an adventure seeker and believer in all things mystically amusing with gadgets. I trust his judgement with our sons and every so often he surprises even me as to how much he knows about general parenting.”
With the desire to raise my two sons in a home where being “Dapper” is more than just a lifestyle, I decided to embark in one of the most influential ways I knew society would respond. Accepting to be part of a magazine dedicated to the modern day dad was my best effort to bringing my definition of a Dapper Dad to life. You’d be surprised how often people speak directly to me instead of him because of the old stereotype that fathers can not handle their own children. Do I have news for them! Today’s dads are more involved and critical in the process of raising children and I applaud fathers and honor them with this project. Within our magazine we invite you to skim through pages with confidence that we engage not only the handy dad, technical father, modern, hip, or even trending Pop...but we also invite you to share what’s on your mind. We want to know about what some of your favorite products are, advice to new dads and how you managed to potty train, fix a car and cook dinner last night. Specifically creating a network for you to find relatable people is what our underlining message is. Either through the pages of the magazine or through a few clicks on our site, we guarantee any dad will find this project up lifting. In my home spor ts, technolog y, music and the ar ts are mandatory staples to creating well-rounded kids so it’s with my pleasure that we present you the very first fatherhood lifestyle magazine where dads can find pages filled with cutting edge fashion, up-to-date trends and exclusive interviews. A magazine finally dedicated to my Mr. Forever...and to you. Happy Father’s Day & Enjoy!

GENTLEMAN’S JOLLY WRITTEN BY MARIO F. DANIELS
B
orn in a British military hospital located in Germany, some may refer to Daniel Ralph as an army brat due to his moving from place to place and changing schools regularly. A person of solace, he had to develop a resilient attitude due to his frequent travels as a child. Despite his hardships, the man that he has become is appreciative of the life skills and lessons his experiences have taught him. Daniel’s father was committed to his family, his country; as a member of the armed forces, and his work once leaving the army that he continued in the field of telecommunications. Dealing with an absent father figure at

times helped Daniel understand and respect the sacrifices every father has to make in order to support their families. The fact that his own father had come so far from humble beginnings made it even more apparent that Daniel wanted to achieve and surpass the heights his father reached. This was also coupled with a desire to be present in the home and provide his family the time and stability they deserved. Daniel Ralph was faced with the challenge of creating a lifestyle that would allow him to be successful, but also in closer proximity to his own family.
“ I believe now, that it is a combination of these happenings in my life that has fuelled my passion to be my own boss and have my own business from a young age”

Daniel took a premature leave of absence, which at the time created a bleak outlook on his future, as it would with anyone who would take such a chance. Even his parents were deeply worried. Exercising the resiliency he learned growing up, Daniel was able to secure a role as trainee sales person working in a Mitsubishi franchise, and within 3 years he worked hard enough and proved his worth, such that he was promoted to the position of sales manager. Struggling with complacency, Daniel almost considered relinquishing his dreams of owning his own business. It
was the “credit crunch” that snapped him back to reality and back on to his original path. It was while attending his wife’s college graduation that he decided to pursue his own education once again. The pride he felt for his wife during her ceremony, and the inspiration he felt thereafter was like a switch that had been turned back on inside of him. It was in July of 2013 that he graduated with a B.A. with honours in Business Administration. The world had once again become his oyster.
“I wanted to further my own knowledge and have a real go at becoming my own boss and following my own dreams”
“I must say how inspired and motivated I was by my discovery of Dapper Dads Magazine developed through a chance encounter on Instagram. As a father and also the main caretaker of my own 2 year old along with my wife, I must say how inspired and motivated by my discovery of the Dapper Dads Magazine. Finally a publication that understands the modern father! The resource is a real necessity for men like me who wish to be strong, providing role models to their children; but also wanting to avoid becoming a monotonous machine and maintaining a sense of identity.”
Daniel’s opportunity came about when he began video blogging. Through this outlet he began showcasing another of his passions… Cars. His blog focused particularly on modified and performance cars. It was also during this time that he moved back to London with his family after having gotten married and becoming a father while studying at university. As a recent graduate he left his part time position located in the North of England to follow and be in support of his wife as she continued to pursue her career as an interior design architect. Unbeknownst to him and his family, they moved to a house that was no more than a two minute walked away from a site that held the Gumball 3000, a local car meet that was held the

first Sunday of every month. Daniel attended and filmed the meets, and as interest built around the videos he posted, so did his own interest in the road rally concept. The Gumball 3000 was no secret, and Daniel knew of it due to his own research. It was through seeing the mind boggling entrance fee of £40000 for the 2014 Gumball 3000 that he began cultivating an alternative means for something so magnificent for a fraction of the cost. Thus The Gentleman’s Jolly was born. Daniel created a premier car rally that was accessible and fun for everyone who participated. His dream of becoming an entrepreneur and love of cars had paid off.

FIGHT FOR YOURSELF WITH HOWARD MALLEN WRITTEN BY: JAMILA PRINGLE When you consider street fighting, the first thing that may come to mind is something along the lines of S.E. Hinton’s classic, The Outsiders, where rival groups from highly concentrated areas of debatable socio economic footing, feud publicly. You may even imagine competitive knuckle brawling as in Channing Tatum’s ‘Fighting.’ For some, like the Imi Lichtenfeld, founder of Krav Maga, street fighting went beyond the perils of petty rivalries, and became an identity, a means for survival. It now serves as a popular form of defense on a global scale, thanks to CEO of Krav Maga Worldwide, Howard Mallen. Before Krav Maga became what it is, there was Slovakian-Israeli Imi Lichtenfeld, a spirited young man who engaged in a variety of sports such as gymnastics, boxing and wrestling, due to encouragement from his father. But, during the mid-1930’s there emerged Fascist groups that threatened the Jewish community in his town of Bratislava. Instead of sitting around, he rounded a

group of former boxers to defend his neighborhood. His tactic slightly mirrored the process of China’s famed Boxer Rebellion, during the late 1800’s to 1900’s, at the end of the Qing Dynasty, where thousands of peasants fought to shield themselves from foreign imperialism. In Lichtenfeld’s case, he mobilized boxers to fight against the spread of anti-Semitism. In an attempt to protect an area inhabited by his people, also known as the Jewish Quarter, Lichtenfeld developed a system of techniques that prepared his group of combatants for real life-threatening situations. He then relocated to Palestine in the 1940’s and officially developed Krav Maga which encompasses grappling, boxing, savate, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Judo and Jujitsu wrestling. But, Israel recognized his fighting abilities and provided a unique method of fighting for the Israeli Defense force. Krav Maga is now the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, emphasizing instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios.

With inspiration from Lichtenfeld’s skill-set, Howard Mallen, founder of today’s Krav Maga Worldwide pushes to demonstrate moves that help people to use their body to fight off criminals and get in the best shape as possible. This form of combat serves as a vital means of defense in today’s society, where millions of people lose their lives to violence every yearon a global scale, according to the World Report on Violence and Health, World Health Organization. The Graduate Institute’s annual survey found that 90 percent of the armed violence did not involve international conflicts or civil wars.

Mallen began training at the age of twelve, under the instruction of Darren Levine, and was mentored by Krav Maga Founder Imi Lichetenfeld. He has practiced this art for over 30 years and earned his third degree black belt in 2012. As many renowned instructors of today, he has earned numerous accolades and respected positions, serving as Certified full instructor by the Wingate Institute of Physical Education and Sport (Netanya, Israel), the Krav Maga Association of America, the Israeli Krav Maga Association, and the International Krav Maga Federation.
Previously, he served as the Director of the Krav Maga Association’s Law Enforcement Training Division where he was responsible for coordinating all Krav Maga law enforcement training in the U.S., and he spent 15 years as a lead force instructor for the Santa Monica Police Department’s defensive tactics unit. Mallen made efforts in ensure Krav Maga’s accessibility to people with every issue and background. Subsequently, Krav Maga Worldwide now has specially formulated programs for self-defense, fighting, fitness, women, Law Enforcement/ Military, youth, black belts, and more. Amid Mallen’s focus on variety, what some may not know is his movement’s push to fight cancer. After the Marni Levine, the highest-ranking female instructor in Krav Maga lost her life due to cancer in 2006, Krav Maga decided to partner with STOP Cancer. This partnership has helped to fund forward-thinking Breast Cancer research with the goal to develop treatments and implement new diagnostic procedures to cure others affected by this condition.

THE GEORGE OLIVER FAMILY WORKOUT
It seems that with today’s technology, reality television, and video game systems, families aren’t getting the proper exercise, especially children. Given the current economy, even recess has been removed from many school curriculums. However, there are many people in this world that still see it as a necessary part of the school curriculum. What better way to promote a healthy lifestyle for your kid than through physical activity? We can all agree that a kid’s playtime can take up at least half their day, and in a technological world, it is even more imperative that kids participate in physical activity. Active play allows for the building of stronger muscles, improved rotary skills, and reflexes. As parents, we owe it to ourselves and our families to keep them as active and healthy as possible. There are quite a few workout routines that can be done with your family outside of the gym. After all, most gyms are a no kid zone anyway, and what’s the point of being a fit family if you can’t get healthy together.
18
DapperDadsMag.com JUNE 2014
When performing a family workout, consider routines that range from simple light weight training for you and your loved one, to fun games that can be enjoyed by all. Please keep in mind that safety is important, so don’t hand your kid a twenty-five pound dumbbell if they haven’t finished potty training dads! Ensure that the goal for your workout is clear and enjoyable. If scheduling is a problem, as it is with most families, try to at least get one good day in a week. As fathers, sometimes we have to think outside of the box to keep the kids entertained. Raising your child’s interest by offering interactive games or challenging them to a race might entice their competitive spirit. What better way to boost your child’s confidence than to win a race against Dad. Running is one of the simpler exercises that can be done with your loved ones. It’s free, easy, and very effective because it works the entire body, benefitting the cardiovascular and respiratory system, along
with the abdominal muscles. Sprinting can be done as a relay race in the backyard or down the street, during this time you’ll be exercising the shoulder and back muscles while also working your upper body muscles depending on whether or not you’re sprinting or running for distance. This family favorite activity gives your core muscles (rectus abdominus, oblique, erector spinae and transverse abdominus) an effective workout. Also keep in mind the added benefits of running on uneven surfaces. You don’t need special equipment or training lessons to go have some good ol’ fashion family fun. Another great idea to consider is what I like to call a Stop-N-Go Run. This involves running short distances at an increased intensity; then stopping and switching to different exercises which can include pull-ups, situps, push-ups, or any calisthenic of your choice. The location you run in will dictate what exercises you are able to complete, but the options are limitless. This is my favorite exercise routine to do with my daughter because like most little kids, she only
knows one speed and that is full throttle. The Stop-N-Go Run allows me to slow her down and give my legs a chance to rest before our next sprint. This form of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is arguably the most effective form of cardio training. Body fat percentage drops in a shorter amount of time and cardiovascular efficiency (VO2 max) greatly improves. You are always free to use your imagination and create new and fun exercise routines for your family. If you are already workout savvy, this may be an easy task; but for the fathers, who are just beginning, consult with the internet and of course, Dapper Dads Magazine for cool tips and exercises. While getting in shape is great, make sure that your main focus is fun. Some of my best childhood memories were with my parents when we went rollerblading or cycling. This builds closer bonds and great memories that you and your children can reminisce about for years to come.

We all know the hard work that goes into being a champion. The amount of blood, sweat, and tears is incomparable to that of any average Joe. In order to be victorious, champions make sacrifices to bring home the grand prize of having a title. We cannot fathom the countless hours spent training away from home. We often do not take into account the family structure and
supporting cast which further ignites the fire and desire to win that each victor possesses. A champion, for that matter is often seen as super-human, as if they crash landed from Krypton and were raised by farmers, sound familiar? Dapper Dads Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Anthony recently and learned what it takes to be an undisputed dad.
DDM: What made you decide to enter into the ring as a professional fighter? By the time my first son Van was born, I was competing in Grand Canyon University’s wrestling program and had to drop my life long ambitions of being an NCAA wrestling champion, eventually moving onto the Olympics; all to make sure my family was being provided for. So I moved back home to Tucson, Arizona and started working a few odd jobs here and there, and got into Mixed Martial Arts along the way. After having one of my first amateur fights not go my way and losing a tough, hard fought battle which gave me a black eye and a mild concussion, I vowed to myself I was going to work harder to get better and make some money, while continuing to be a competitive athlete! And here we are today!
DDM: Who are your influences in terms of your craft? My brother Victor Gonzalez who’s a former collegiate wrestler, and University of Arizona graduate. Victor is a teacher and wrestling coach who influences me by believing in my athletic ability and pushing me to my maximum potential. All while giving me a role model to look up to as a father who works hard and provides for his family. My training partner and coach, UFC fighter Chris Cariaso who is a father of 2, owns 2 successful gyms, and still competes, and fights at the highest elite level. He inspires me to leave something for my sons to take over once fighting is over with. I would love to be able to hand over a successful business for my kids to then pass along to their kids.
DDM: How does it feel to be a father and a fighter? It’s hard you know; there’s a ton of sacrifice! This fight life isn’t easy and it definitely takes a toll on the kids dragging them from gym to gym, workout to workout. They still have a hard time grasping that I don’t work a normal 9-5 and that me training is me “working” or that When I’m off in another state or country fighting, that daddy’s “at the office”. I want them to know I chased my dream, caught it, and now I’m living it with all of them; and that when they grow up chase, whatever dream it is they have, because that is the sweet life, the journey.
DDM: What are some of the challenges at home?
DDM: Does the role of a father influence your actions in the ring? How so?
DDM: As a champion, what are some of the values that you have learned that you would like to pass on to your children?
Other than making sure I’m not careless or putting myself in a dangerous situation by not training properly, not really. I try not to think about the bad things that can happen in a fight, I try to think of how proud my kids are going to be when I come back home with that shiny belt and safe!
DDM: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in your career once you became a dad? By far the hardest challenge was time management. Sometimes I forget that my training and diet isn’t fun for those around me in no way whatsoever! Making each kid feel like they have their dad’s undivided attention is real hard, but I do my best to make sure we go play games at he park or watch movies and eat dinners together as a family.
22
DapperDadsMag.com JUNE 2014
Not talking about fighting. It’s hard not to always be strategizing, or planning my next career move, or studying potential opponents. I sometimes have a hard time remembering to be a good boyfriend. If she wasn’t a fighter herself she would’ve left my ass a long time ago. I’m trying harder to focus on the family, I’ve noticed when you blink, six months fly by and you’re wondering what you were doing the entire time.
Like I said, I want my kids to at least take away from the fight life the lessons of a good strong work ethic, believing in their dreams, and never thinking a dream is too farfetched to chase down! I hope they look back and realize later in life that all the gym hours, black eyes, blood, sweat and tears were to make them see that with hard work and dedication, anything you want is attainable.
DDM: What is your toughest battle to date? My toughest battle to date is myself! I once read “Once the fighter realizes the fight is within and not in the arena, then the fighter truly becomes unbeatable!” I’ve learned that every time I evolve or change in some way, I seem to step in my own way again, and I must conquer that aspect of myself before I can
move forward and continue my success. That is in all things, not just fighting.
DDM: If you could use a fighting style to describe your parenting, which one would it be? [Laughing] My parenting style would be an old hard nose wrestler style. Tough love, hard learned lessons, with the positive promise of trying again tomorrow, and to try to outdo themselves; but in a positive way with a warm, fatherly, reassuring hug, that no matter how hard I am, I’m still rooting for them.
DDM: Who are your support systems as a fighter and father? What role do they play in your life? My uncle Rene Matus who pretty much took over the role as father in my life, since my dad passed away when I was four years old. He is the owner and operator of two large roofing companies in southern Arizona and was also into karate as well as other combat sports growing up, so he understands my dream and encourages me to be the best in and outside of the ring. We always have some deep talks about what I’m doing; whether it’s the right or wrong way, and sometimes how I just need to carve my own path until others decide to follow it too. My biggest fan and supporter is the mother of my children and CEO of our company Mercedes White! She is truly the biggest and best addition to my career and growth, both as an athlete and a man. I love her to pieces!
JUNE 2014 DapperDadsMag.com
23
DDM: If you had to choose another career, what would it be? Maybe I’d finish my degree in visual communications and graphic design, and expand on it with an emphasis in sports marketing or sports management. That way I could have still been in the athletic world, just with a lot less face punching [Laughs].
DDM: What advice do you have for fathers out there in the world? Work hard at everything you do because your children are ALWAYS watching and assessing you. If you challenge them to push themselves and be great, I think most kids will take up that challenge. I learned a lot from watching my grandfather Frank Gonzalez, especially when it came to working hard, treating people well, and treating your wife and family good. He also taught me the value of keeping your family close to your heart! You will never be alone and you will always have each other let me tell you that. Anthony Birchak is a father and a fighter; a champion in the home and outside of it. His guts and glory have far surpassed that of a ring or cage fighter. He has proven that he is among the elite gladiators that draw their will to win from family; much like Maximus when triumphing over Commodus. Anthony Birchak is not only a fit father, but a proven dapper dad, who has never stopped being a winner for himself and his family.

hen you think “vacation,” what is the first thing that com es to m ind? Perhaps lying out between two palm trees in gentle linen, on a secluded island, with tropical beverages, and a cool breeze hitting your face every so often- surfaces. If these thoughts come up, you are probably not alone. But, why not consider something different, with a cooler edge, like a hotel comprised of ice? I know what you may be thinking, “A hotel made of ice?” The idea is intriguing, as it is genius. If you opt to go this route, your best bet is Sweden’s ICEHOTEL, with designs led by premiere architectural curator, and proud father, Jens Thoms Ivarsson. The ICEHOTEL spans over 5,500 square meters, constructed from 1,000 tons of snow and ice, and exudes nothing short of charming grandeur, due to heaps of creativity and pools of frozen water from Torne River. For those that relish intimate settings, there is a deluxe suite with an en-suite sauna to warm one’s pores. Drawing from inspirations of ancient, painted caves, this suite has engraved along its ceilings, visuals of animals and objects that engulf the onlooker within a mini-world of their own. Furnished with towering walls, decorated in floral ice patterns, the Deluxite is a delight and comes with the en-suite sauna, of course. Next you can feast your eyes on the Northern Light Suite with colorful renditions of the actual northern lights, dancing before your very eyes. Don’t forget the Ice Rooms and Snow Rooms with furniture and bedding, adorned in animal hide. This frosty-filled get -away, is quite a find for simply sleeping on a block of ice.

Every year this frozen wonder is rebuilt in unique ways with artists commissioned from all around the world. Ivrason had a hand in the world’s first and largest snow hotel, and humbly acknowledged that “this year I did the ICEBAR at the ICEHOTEL, together with two other artists. The ICEHOTEL is created by approximately 45 artists from all over the world and a building team of approx. 60 people.” This ice creation has ser ved the public for over 25 years and continues to exhibit a unique showcase.
Carving Time For Family As a top designer for the ICEHOTEL’s renowned ICEBAR, Ivarsson still finds time to make family top priority, while spending over 100 hours on this project. Like most fathers, he enjoys spending time with his children, allowing them to see what he does as designer, to bring smiles on their faces. He plays with them a lot, takes them seriously, and respects them, and of course, showers them with lots of love. “My role as a father has changed the way I work. I work as short days as possible, then spend time with my family and then, if needed, I do another hour or two when the kids are sleeping. I do not watch that much [television],” he added. When asked about leaving a creative legacy, he admitted that, “as a father I hope to inspire my kids to do exactly what they feel like doing.”

Strong family values come from none other than his grandfather, who was an artist all of his life. “He taught me to so really, really see. My father, who is ver y creative and inspires me in many things. One thing is the importance of great craftsmanship. Mats Nilsson, my dear friend who is a fourth generation stone sculptor, who taught me how to work with stone and concrete and not to stress t o o m u c h . H e i s a l s o t h e m o s t genuine person I know.” Many forget to realize that experiences in your youth do have ripple effects on the future, and for Ivarsson, this life lesson is no different. His childhood wa s s u r ro u n d ed by a r t, d es i g n , architecture and crafts. Subsequently, this history has impacted his work, and life today.
Bei n g th at h e i s f ami l y-o ri en ted, Ivarsson was happy to point out that the ICEHOTEL has something that every family can enjoy, a “Fantastic nature! All year around. ICEHOTEL are mostly famous for the winter season, but we have activity all year around. Everything has to do with the river or nature in one way or the other. Combined with excellent food and great art. Something truly unique th at i s wo n derf ul to exp eri en ce together with your whole family.” Although you may not have the creative skill of Ivarsson this frozen treat is well worth it - a remarkable piece of art. Why you may ask? Well, “it is e phemeral, and an amazing art project that is unique due to the massive investment in art each year,” says Ivarsson.

ESCAPE TO AN ESTATE OF
Luxury
Ellenborough Park WRITTEN BY: JAMILA PRINGLE
“Every now and then go away, and have a little relaxation. To remain constantly at work will diminish your judgment. Go some distance away, because work will be in perspective and a lack of harmony is more readily seen,” wrote Leonardo Da Vinci, an all-around renaissance man, whose notable works are most often associated with luxury. These words serve as a reminder that a little time away, is always good, and a great way to indulge a state of comfort is at England’s Ellenborough Park, an ancient home on the original racecourse estate where history, simplicity and luxury collide. One may experience antiquity at this ‘Elizabethan’ estate, beyond the edge of pages in a book, and delve into reality, at the establishment started in the early 1500’s by Thomas Goodman, a local farmer who also leased property owned by King Henry VII. It’s no wonder Goodman commemorated Henry VII and Queen, Elizabeth of York, in the stained glass windows of what is now known as The Beaufort Dining Room. Amid historic traces, this country house hotel emanates, comfort, luxury and an ideal à l’extérieur escape. Its’ sprawling 90 acres of parkland include carefully constructed greenery with clean, unassuming gardens that exude an aura of old elegance. The surrounding foliage is fortified by stone and brick, which reflect a sense of austerity. After perusing the outdoors, it is easy to get lost in oak panelled rooms and ornate plaster ceilings that were fully restored, as was a magnificent staircase which was added by Richard De la Bere in the early 1600s, which acts as a centerpiece to the Main House. The Telegraph’s Fiona Duncan attested to the opulence of its architecture, where she described Ellenborough Park’s reinvention as “clever,” because “The owners could so easily have entrusted a tricksy interior designer with the job; they could have cut corners and made every room the same; or they could have gone to the metallic wallpaper and velvet devoré fabric shop as so many similar hotels do when they want to introduce a contemporary look. Instead, they turned to Nina Campbell.”
36
DapperDadsMag.com JUNE 2014
The hotel is often compared to establishments such as Limewood, Pennyhill Park,Cliveden House, The Connaught, Coworth Park and Chewton Glen, where every attention to detail is considered and every single requirement anticipated - it is an ethos which extends throughout every aspect of the hotel.

After exploring Ellenborough Park’s aesthetics, take a ten minute walk to Cheltenham Spa, which includes a Jacuzzi, steam room, a fitness room, sauna and a range of treatments. Women aren’t the only ones who can indulge in facials and massages to get an escape from the stresses of busy lifestyles at a spa that has been awarded “England’s Leading Spa Hotel” by the World Travel Awards in 2011, 2012 and 2013. A relaxing experience is never complete without a touch of something out of the ordinary. Instead of going to a bar, go to The Great Hall, where “Afternoon Tea is served, a quintessentially English tradition,” according to Butler, Marketing Assistant for Ellenborough Park. The Great Hall is ideal for Afternoon Tea and cocktails. The room includes antique chandeliers and log fire, a perfect setting to cozy up with a loved one, or to share memories with friends and family.
Experience à l’extérieur Most often, than not, Cheltenham Racecourse is a premiere destination, for Ellenborough Park visitors, perched at a hill over-looking rich flatlands, featuring toptier race horses. Guests can partake in “a private track across fields to Cheltenham Racecourse,” says Butler. ften times, the world’s most brilliant ideas stem from spur of the moment occurrences, those moments that come when you least expect it. Think about it. JK Rowling, author of the infamous Harry Potter series, started her million dollar empire while putting a pen to paper after an idea came to her at a train station. She had no money, but stuck with her instinct, and is now wealthier than the Queen of England. Who can forget how Starbucks’ CEO Howard Schulz realized during a trip to Milan that ‘experience,’ should be the domineering factor during coffee shop experience, rather than the beans itself ? For Blake Mycoskie, the man behind the growing TOMS empire, an encounter with impoverished children in Argentina who had no shoes, made him believe that basic apparel is something every child deserves. Out of the desire to help these children, he would help millions more through the development of TOMS; a company that would match every shoe purchased, and gives to a child in need.
Bringing Browline’s Back
Mycoskie would later expand his shoe empire to eyewear, and maintain his “One for One” business model, giving glasses to children in need for every purchase. Incorporating charity into his venture, proved to be a hit. TOMS would help to increase vision for thousands of youth in need throughout the world, with style – of course. There is no shortage of welltailored eyewear with TOMS, which gives back, while showcasing distinct eyewear that refer to some of history’s most memorable decades.
When you think 1960’s, you think Andy Warhol; you automatically pair him with his signature Wayfarer eyewear - those piercing dark eyes and unearthly eyebrows, against his plastic frames. Even singer and songwriter Bob Dylan couldn’t get enough of them, and always accessorized his curly fro’ with these. So, if you ever consider channeling your inner Warhol or Dylan, think TOMS’ Archie, the quintessential wayfarer, a full plastic frame with dark brown and scattered tan hues. Waferer’s have the potential to add a whimsical,

Take a step back to the 1950’s when heartthrob James Dean, a non conforming actor rocked his signature sexy-nerd look, and made ‘browline’ glasses a hit. With these specs, the frame is bigger than the lower portion, and pronounces the natural eyebrow. Women couldn’t get enough of Dean’s top-frame sunglasses pressed against his high cheekbones. It comes to no surprise that these are coming back into style and TOMS is making it happen with standout pieces such as Aiden, and its warm brown frames, pressed against silver metal for a modern twist on the 50’s era. Its pale blue tips are the perfect contrast to its marble top-tiered frames. In my opinion, browlines are the perfect catch if you are going for a sexy, sleek look. Imagine walking down London’s Saville Road in Tom Ford shoes and a dark, fitted Billy Reid suit, peering at Big Ben through your Aiden glasses. Now, that is a site to behold.

p erso n al to uch to th e Dap p er businessman. Throw on a clean Dior Homme suit with a checkered Todd Snyder button-up, paired with a cloth Charvet tie, and you’ll like money, while checking out your Cartier watch through Archie glasses -of course!
Retro Square Meets Reading The 1970’s would not be the same without the well-defined retro square glasses. Many were just transitioning out of the Tom Cruise “Top Gun” high in aviators and opted to something less obvious. The most memorable icon during this time that made Retro Square anything but square was none other than Elton John, who made bold statements a cool thing. So if you want to get one step “closer tiny dancer,” opt for TOMS’ Lyndi - Honey Tortoise for a modern twist where retro square meets reading glasses. You have love retro square meets reading. This look perfectly meshes comfort with style for the everyday “Dapper Dad,” and leaves plenty of room for creative additions. Picture yourself in Zara’s bold green espadrilles with a simple striped shirt from Crew and Lyndi-Honey Tortoise glasses to top it off.

CELEBRITY STYLIST
on FAMILY, OPTIMISM and the Will to SUCCEED
“Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” - STEVE JOBS
WRITTEN BY : JAMILA PRINGLE
tanding tall in multi-colored ethnic jewelry, accented by neatly placed golden locks to frame his angular countenance, Celebrity Stylist, Ty Hunter’s bold style can easily fool you, if you aren’t looking closely enough. Whether he is working the red carpet at the Grammy’s or styling Beyonce for the MET Gala, his work is always instills a keen sense of humility and creativity. His work ethic probably stems from a saying often used to sum up his life, “fashion starts from within.” ‘Within’ can mean different things for different people: family, money, or power, but few people realize that Hunter’s main source of inspiration stems from his daughter, who “keeps pushing me to do better every day. It is important for me to show her that anything is possible.” As do many parents in the limelight, Hunter maintains a sensible level of privacy in regards to his daughter, and although he is technically a single father, he refuses to take all of the credit for his daughter’s upbringing adding pointedly, “I am not a single father. I’m very blessed to be able to co-parent with her mother. Her mom has done an amazing job! And, I think we’ve raised a pretty cool kid.” Being a single career-oriented father is no easy feat, but Hunter advises those that it is important to stay strong and to remember that you want to always be the number one positive role model for your child in their life, adding that they will have a lot, but you don’t want anything taking that from you. Like father, like daughter, Hunter’s “Inspiration” is following in her father’s footsteps and is a “fashionista in her own right.” Yet, “whatever she decided to do, I would support her.

Like father, like daughter, Hunter’s “Inspiration” is following in her father’s footsteps and is a “fashionista in her own right.” Yet, “whatever she decided to do, I would support her. She’s my child and [her] happiness is very important. It’s what keeps you waking up every day ready to go and fulfill your destiny.”
HAILING FROM TEXAS Hailing from Austin Texas, Hunter’s simple upbringing in part distinguishes him on a human level. This influential stylist starts out in retail in his hometown, but after a chance encounter with Tina Knowles, Beyonce’s then head stylist, he was afforded the opportunity to work with Destiny’s child in 2000. Hunter worked day and night with Ms. Knowles to develop the group to its iconic status and cultivate their look. Their hard work paid off. Destiny’s Child would become the nation’s most popular R&B group selling over 60 million records worldwide. After the disbursement of this group Hunter would go on to style Beyonce who was listed as Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. Many now recognize Hunter as Beyonce’s lead stylist, alongside his counterpart Raquel Smith. He has continued to rise in the fashion arena, having consulted for numerous international and ad campaigns and can boast contribution to almost every major international and national mainstream magazine. Success at this magnitude was not an easy feat for this proud father who admits to have reached this level through prayer and determination. There were a lot of times I wanted to give up, but I knew I couldn’t. I had to keep pushing, not only for myself, but for my
daughter and family.” Positivity and determination accurately describe this styling icon who makes a point to have his social media (Twitter & Instagram) to serve as a source of light. “I know this world is a struggle. I just try to make sure that there is inspiration and light all over my page. Social Media can be very negative at times with all the negative comments some people leave. So, I feel my page can be the ‘getaway’ spot for the brain.” Daily Instagram postings from Hunter include comments such as “Ladies if nobody didn’t tell you today, let me be the first… you are beautiful. Have a great day,” or Let’s stop believing that our differences make us superior to one another.”An upbeat spirit is something that radiates beyond his family and work, Hunter shares this way of being, in his philanthropic work as well. He has done a lot and “was always raised to bless other. Soup kitchens are my favorite because I get to interact. I like to hear people’s stories.”
DREAM ON Sometimes, dreaming is not such a bad thing. Oprah Winfrey did it and became a renowned television personality, Steve Jobs did it and founded Apple Inc. , Ty Hunter did it, and became one of fashion’s most coveted stylist.

EMERGING DESIGER
RICARDO SECO BRINGS JACKIE O’ TO MEN’S APPAREL BY : JAMILA PRINGLE
As former general manager of a thriving import and export business in his native country of Mexico, emerging designer Ricardo Seco’s road to fashion was no ordinary one. In contrast, a legacy was passed on in the renowned Versace fashion house, where the late founder Gianni Versace’s sister Donatella Versace, often seen with current muse Lady Gaga, now heads as Creative Director. Unlike many of his fashion counterparts, Seco, a visibly mild-mannered gentleman, got his start later in life, his desire to fill stores with his apparel and make timeless classic pieces for everyone is what helps drive him.
I
n the heart of north Mexico, Seco’s dreams always made him stand out. “I was very different from a lot of my friends,” he said lightly. “I went into business for the money, and I felt good about it, but I did not feel like I was following my dream.” For 10 years Seco would do the layout for import and export, but one day, he decided to go to Milan for a summer, one of the world’s most recognized fashion capitals and home to some of the most respected designers of our time such as Giorgio Armani, Valentino Garavani, Prada, Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce. He then took a second trip, but this time to Paris, home to the luxury headquarters of huge brands like Christian Dior, Rochas, Louis Vuitton, Céline, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Chloé, Lanvin, Kenzo and Hermès. Seco immersed himself into the culture, history and structure of Paris where the eccentric Beau Brummell who redefined European apparel found refuge after fleeing England, or where CoCo Chanel invented the iconic black dress, which can be translated into a solid black suit for men. In any case, Seco’s moving experience in Paris would set the tone for the rest of his life, when he decided to leave the business to follow his true dreams, and work in fashion. The satisfaction of doing something he loves is can be easily discovered through the calm and endearing expression on his face. As Henry David Thoreau would put it, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” This rang true for Seco, who has had the opportunities to work with big names such as Ricky Martin and John Varvatos of Converse.
A LOOK INTO RICARDO SECO
M DapperDadsMag.com JUNE 2014
RICARDO SECO: I guess you can say that.
DDM: So, I know that you have a huge base of people who are fathers that live your designs as well. Can you delve more into that for me? RICARDO SECO: Yes I think there are roots in fatherhood from my inspiration with John-John. When you look at the Kennedy’s you see a strong political family with strong father figures.
DDM: I know that you were born in Mexico. RICARDO SECO: Yes, the north of Mexico.
DDM: Have your cultural roots surfaced in the structure of your line? RICARDO SECO: Yes, I made some of my collection in Mexico, Italy and China.
DDM: Have you ever considered doing women’s apparel? RICARDO SECO: Yes. Actually, five collections ago, I was in Mexico doing women’s apparel, but when I arrived in NYC, I decided to detour and focus more on men’s apparel. Surprisingly, a lot of women buy my clothes for their men (husbands, fathers, brothers). However, within time I may come out with something new for women.
DDM: What was your favorite piece from your fall 2014 collection?
DDM: If you could work with one prominent designer right now, who would it be?
RICARDO SECO: You ask me what piece, I say- all of the collection. You see Jackie O, you see John-John, also known as John F. Kennedy. These are two things that represent my collection. I see Jackie O, and although I am doing a men’s collection, there is a lot there. She used a lot of colors and pastels and I implemented this into my collection. Also, in regards to John-John, when I was in France I was given a sculpture of him. I took a picture of it and infused it into my designs. It is interesting that in that period people had one set way of wearing things. Now, you can pick and choose what you want from your closet. I think that my with line you can mix and match pieces.
RICARDO SECO: I have respect for all of the designers out there, but I would like to work with one big brand. I can work with Louis Vuitton, I can work with Gucci. I imagine that. I know that I am from Mexico, but I think that I could contribute to their brands. I understand that they have roots in France and Italy, but I think there is work that can be done there. I would actually like to do some work from new balance too because now I think that new balance is the new sneaker and their classic look is more cool.
DDM: What made you decide to choose the 1950’s-1960’s era to serve as inspiration for your fall collection?
56
DDM: I guess you are taking a lead from Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren. [laughs]
DDM: Your line reminds me a lot of Pringle of Scotland, because it is very clean, and the structure is similar in some ways. They are growing at a pretty steady pace in my opin-
RICARDO SECO: I was looking for something that has classic roots. I think that now, we live in a moment that if you don’t sell something that is forever, there is less of an opportunity for sale. I wanted to do a piece that you will never forget. That you will always have in your mind. There are a lot of sources of inspiration that you can use from this time to make a classic piece.

I D E A S MATERIALS NOT
A SPOTLIGHT ON BOBBY PIN JEWELRY
WRITTEN BY: MARIO F. DANIELS
“We see jewelry as aesthetic storytelling, allowing you to express yourself through appearance and tell the world what you believe, in just a glance” these are words from the creators of Bobby Pin Jewelry, a designer accessories line that finds its’ inspiration in the everyday mementos of our lives. Creating through the use of token keepsakes and precious metals, Bobby Pin Jewelry provides its clients with something more than just another trinket. “Our collections are inspired by the inherent sense of story that can be locked in an everyday object, like a memento of a beloved memory. We see the potential or jewelry in everything”. Each piece tells a story and has a history, if I could describe the brand in any other terms, I’d say “continuing legacies by preserving the past”. Bobby Pin Jewelry, is an Urban-Nouveau jewelry line located in the heart of NYC, specializing in men’s and women’s one of a kind custom jewelry. Being a company with a purpose, a portion of all their sales go to support anti-violence charities like Cure Violence who is currently ranked #9 on Global Journal’s list of top 100 NGO’s for 2013. Through the destruction, repurposing and abstraction of bullets and other forms of militaria their aim is to make a statement against violence; an issue that plagues every community in America. The story began with a vintage war medal that Maria de Diego found years ago, the history of the piece lead her to explore further how Militaria has inspired fashion and changed design.
64
In my work, some accessory lines that I come across often do not have much of a dynamic story to tell, nor do some designers make such a bold statement as addressing the current social state of their outlying communities. “At Bobby Pin we are more than just jewelry designers we are socially conscious members of the community. That is why it is important to us that we sell more than just a look;
we are selling a statement, a for m of expression that tells the world our beliefs at first glance”. That is what makes Bobby Pin Jewelry special; it provides certain realness not only in the pieces they design, but in the mission and actions sur rounding the work they do with charities. “Charity has always played an important role in our design. We look to support the people, ideas, and things we
find important. Our collections reflect these ideals as we strive to give them a physical life, making them into a wearable symbol.” Most heroes often go without praise or mention, working silently in the background, remaining inconspicuous, but in the heart of New York City lays a dynamic duo whose artistry speaks of peace, compassion, and style.
She found that despite its long history, a refined military aesthetic was absent from the world of jewelry. In 2013 Maria was joined by Susan Schell, who beg an as an inter n but soon became a part of the team. While working on this collection, fashioning bullets and other repurposed military wares, a number of violent gun related tragedies occurred. This brought new meaning and new purpose to the collection; it would become a reflection of current social issues and a statement against violence.

BUYING ART IN THE DIGITAL AGE 8 TIPS TO GET STARTED
WRITTEN BY: ALEX FARKAS
As an art history student in college, I filled much of my free time exploring museums and galleries. I loved looking at all of the art, and I was fascinated by the art patrons of the world who amassed troves of paintings and sculptures. I wondered‌ How could I own original art like these people without spending a fortune? In a few short years, this has become a question of the past. Like many other industries, the internet has also revolutionized the art world. Online galleries now represent some of the world’s most talented artists, and you can find exquisite original art for as little as a few hundred dollars. In addition, the web offers unprecedented selection and convenience. UGallery.com has help to push art buying in the digital age forward by creating these eight simple steps:
84
DapperDadsMag.com JUNE 2014
JUNE 2014 DapperDadsMag.com
85
ART UGALLERY
ART UGALLERY DONT THINK INVESTMENT Don’t worry about the future value of your artwork. Some art grows in value, but finding those pieces typically takes years of training, knowledge, and expertise. If you’re buying art recreationally, stick to what appeals to your eye.
BUY WHAT YOU LOVE Above all, buy what you love. If you follow your gut and your budget, you’ll smile every time you walk past your new art. You will soon find yourself looking for your next piece. I’ve now been gathering my own collection of (affordable) original art for years and I feel the same sense of excitement as when I walk through museums and galleries. I find it to be a powerful form of self-expression, a great conversation starter, and it makes me proud of where I live. I highly recommend it!
DEVELOP YOUR TASTE
LEARN ABOUT THE ARTIST
s a new art buyer, the first step is figuring out the style of art you like. Start your search by browsing online art sites and visiting museums and physical galleries. I recommend searching curated galleries, like my company UGallery.com, where art experts have already hand-selected the collection for you. You will often find helpful categories such as staff favorites and popular artists to guide you. When you see art you like, take note of the elements that draw you in such as the subject matter, color palette, style (for example, abstraction vs. realism), and the media used. It will help you better understand your taste. As an added bonus, you will become more familiar with the galleries you explore, which will help you decide where you want to make a purchase.
Enrich your search for art by learning about the artist. Information about the artist’s personal story, inspirations, unique creation techniques, and educational training can all add value and meaning to the art. It’s easier now more than ever to research an artist online, whether through a profile on a gallery website, via social media, or on the artist’s personal site. When you’re drawn to an artist, feel free to ask questions. You’ll learn even more about the work.
A
SET A BUDGET Once you focus your taste, it’s important to set a budget. You can find unique and well-made artwork at just about any price point, so establishing a budget that will help guide you to the galleries and types of art that fit into your price range. Sticking to your budget will also help ensure a pleasant buying experience.
DO THINK TOO LONG-TERM Think semi-long term and employ the same principles you use for purchasing the rest of your home décor. What’s practical? What’s worth the cost? What will you still love in five years (but may want to trade up in ten)? Art doesn’t have to be a life-long commitment and can suit different phases in your life. That’s how it should be.
86
DapperDadsMag.com JUNE 2014
RESEARCH THE ARTIST’S SALE HISTORY Buying online can offer the huge benefit of seeing an artist’s sales history. Online galleries like UGallery often display a list of all pieces sold to date including the price. This gives you price transparency. You can see what others have paid for similar works which allows you to have more buying power and confidence in the value you’re receiving. Don’t be alarmed if an artist has little or no past sales; they may be new to the gallery or new to selling.
ASK QUESTIONS ESPECIALLY ABOUT THE RETURNS POLICY Online galleries tend to be customer service experts and like to chat with clients. Typically, you can ask tons of questions at your own leisure via live chat, email, telephone or even social media. SINGLE MOTHER RAISED FATHERHOOD MADE - inside
CHAZ LANGLEY QUEST INTO FATHERHOOD Chaz Langley, a man of exceptional taste, has mastered his unique gift of stringing together words as a professional songwriter. Crediting his single mother, he shared his inspiring story of their relationship and the significant values she instilled in him. Successfully working full-time, Langley has now entered fatherhood full throttle and discusses parenting exclusively with Dapper Dads Magazine. Raised solely by his mother, the Brooklyn based musician followed the songstress’s footsteps and pursued a career in the arts. Chaz was committed to make a name for himself after graduating from the prestigious Governor’s Magnet School for the Arts in Virginia. Creating an extensive resume varying from theme park performer to cruise ship entertainer, he stressed the major impact his traveling had on his career. Adjusting to New York had its own significant value by exposing himself to a broad range of music but leaving helped combine his trendy eastern flare with the calm west coast vibe, hence developing his exceptional writing techniques.Years prior to his time in the big apple, Langley worked the circuit and created a niche for himself as the urban hipster in Nashville. Once exhausting all potential leads, he decided to pursue his hand as a songwriter in New York. Success was in his favor after meeting Val Morris, his jingle agent, who sat and listened to every song on his original demo. That being almost unheard of, she signed Chaz and they began to work. Soon after dedicating his time to writing, Hayden Panettiere, who appeared on the comic inspired television series, Heroes accepted & recorded a Langley original, “Walk Again”. As his career began to take off, so did his love life.

m akes it look incr edibly easy but in fact, it’s his dedication that makes the transition from musician to hands-on dad so commendable. Suppor ting the signature ar tist look, I note his necklace, thick framed lenses and beanie as part of this musicians staples. Styled to perfection he mentioned how his unique look was always something that stood out. While in Nashville locals always recognized his New York appeal or nicely suggested that’s where he needed to be. Full-time parent, successful songwriter and proudly working towards presenting his work to artist such as Michael Buble and John Legend, this Dapper Dad embodied greatness. A tr ue example of an all around father, Chaz Langley defined the signature title as, “a well dressed father and most importantly a gentleman.”

share their story. “I work so my children can one day say; hey my dad wrote that song!” Daily Gio and “Dado” bond on multiple levels. Langley has introduced the arts to his children and allowed them to venture into classical, rock and hip hop. “My son has an ear for music. We have mini jam sessions and he’ll sit and sing classics like Michael Jackson and Sting.” Managing to offer the father figure he’d been missing allows him an opportunity to create lasting memories with his children that he equally treasures. “I sit and watch him laugh, it blows my mind. His curiosity and his sense of adventure motivate me to provide a life that never limits him and instead creates opportunities for him to continue growing.” Allowing him to schedule playtime also serves as a reminder to pursue his own dreams of success, “I love music because it allows me to be home and grants me the freedom to cook dinner with my kids, to take walks in the afternoon and really live in the moment.” Flexibility is mandatory for parents, especially when reading bed time stories are requested. “I take my family into consideration every day. I do what I can to provide as a parent. I’ll always want to give more.” Chaz

Chaz noticed his future wife while perfor ming at a local Russian restaurant. “She was a tornado on the dance floor. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her.” Soon after meeting his “Little Lady”, he shamelessly mentioned, “Our relationship spoke to my soul and all I did was daydream about a family.” Intertwining his African American culture came natural to the family as he began to learn about the Republic of Georgia. “The most challenging part was introducing myself to her 4 year old daughter” Chaz recalled, “I took it very slow. I would pick her up from school and made myself available to her. It prepared us and created a tight bond amongst us quickly.” While heavily pursuing his career, his family proved to be an effortless balance. Flawlessly intergrading new work into his schedule, the R&B artist welcomed his son Gio into the mix in 2011. Chaz embodies the Dapper Dad on a daily basis as he embraces the overall experience of being a father. Jumping into the daddy role came naturally and set a new pace for the family of four. “I work harder now than ever before. I want my children to be proud of their dad.” As he began to prop up in his chair, I could sense the excitement he had to

While more than ¼ of respondents (27%) said they moved in together after less than 6 months of dating, only 7% would recommend moving in so quickly! Some are still going the traditional route! 15% of respondents said they waited until after they were married to move in together; 18% said they didn’t think couples should move in until after marriage Surprisingly, more than ¼ of renters aged 18-24 (37%) said they think couples should wait until after marriage before moving in together—more than any other age group! The majority of renters surveyed said 6 months-1 year is the appropriate amount of time to date before moving in together (37%)

The #1 thing renters said they wished they had discussed before moving in together was how the finances would be divided! 16% of renters said splitting the finances was their biggest hurdle since moving in together While most opt to split everything evenly (34%), 23% of renters said their significant other pays all the bills (97% of which were female!) 16% of renters said of renters split bills based on their individual income 15% said it varies month to month after marriage before moving in together—more than any other age group! The majority of renters surveyed said 6 months-1 year is the appropriate amount of time to date before moving in together (37%)
While cheaper rent, half the chores and sharing close quarters with your significant other may seem like a dream, moving in together too soon could cause rental regrets. That’s why Rent.com surveyed 1,000 cohabitating renters to find out if you should keep separate pads until you’ve tied the knot or if is it important to “try it before you buy it.” Guys, I don’t know about you, but I would buy the car without giving it a test drive first.

PARENT?
Many of us parents work, making ourselves excuses because we can’t help how busy we have to be sometimes. But these principles don’t make concessions for not meeting any of our children’s needs. No matter how many bills we have, the needs would not cease to exist or have relevance. If they don’t bond primarily with us, they will seek it elsewhere, distrustfully outside the home, negatively affecting their lifelong impact.

i
n my early days as a young single parent, I was
often faced with the challenge of figuring out what kind of parent I was going to be. Prior to that time, I had my own little mantra, “I will never bring a child into this world unless I have it on straight spiritually”. I was deathly afraid of being a hypocrite and hypocrisy was much of what I saw around me, especially when it came to spiritual things. So to hold me to my mantra, God allowed the child to come first forcing me to get it together. But even then, with a new life of spiritual commitment, it didn’t take away the suspicious residue left behind by a trail of dysfunction in my son’s mother’s life. So for a time, I lived on pins and needles, trying to do right while also trying to dodge mistrustful bullets that really weren’t intended for me. My spiritual awakening came from a simple desire of wanting to know ‘the truth’. Likewise, being a brand new parent, I just wanted to do what was right. My insecurity came from the fact that despite having a pretty decent upbringing, I didn’t want to mess this one up; especially since I was on my own now. I know now, after years of trials, that I’m not alone in that sentiment. Many dads have encountered and shared the same or similar insecurity about doing the right thing. Sadly, many fathers have been discouraged from pursuing active involvement with their children because for some reason they feel that what they have to offer just isn’t good enough. Unfortunately, many custodial moms have contributed to this insecurity in cases of post relationship co-parenting. However, it’s not just single parents that can feel that way. I believe that anyone who has ever had a child or considered having one and who is serious about the role has wondered at some point if what they are doing
is good enough. Recently, I was introduced to a new way of thinking. I found a book which was released last year entitled, “Good Enough Parenting -A Christian Perspective on Meeting Core Emotional Needs and Avoiding Exasperation”, by John and Karen Louis. In this book I discovered a very accessible way to renew my hope and others’ as well. I learned a basic template on how we gauge how well we’re doing in our parenting by examining 4 core emotional needs that every child has. According to the Louis’, if we meet these core needs, we will cover so much more ground and increase our success rate with day-to-day living as parents. Without digging into too much detail about the book, there’s a bottom line conclusion that everyone who reads it could come to: you don’t have as good as you can be in meeting your own child’s needs. You just have to be The following core needs are what they say we should be shooting for:
· Connection & Acceptance · Healthy Autonomy JUNE 2014 DapperDadsMag.com
111
· Reasonable Limits · Realistic Standards Connection and Acceptance- This has a lot to do with what kind of hands-on contact you have with your child. This includes both physically and mentally, as well as emotionally. Healthy Autonomy is particularly essential for male parents to be aware of because it is congruently tuned to how men tend to socialize their children. Whereas moms want to protect their children from everything, dads send them out to experience things and expect them to take action. Both are needed but a Healthy Autonomy understands what the boundaries are in allowing freedom- it promotes experiential learning.
112
Realistic Expectations can often be illustrated through the filter of vicarious living on the parent’s part. In other words - you are reliving your deferred hope through the kids and driving them crazy. You want them to succeed at your failures. In fact, they MUST succeed or it becomes a disciplinary issue. You want this when they can barely walk, talk or reason at a level that can support your expectation. As a parent, one must do your homework on what expectations are age appropriate and meet your child where they are. Outside of all of this thinking, there is just good old fashioned gratitude. Not everyone is blessed with the honor and privilege of parenthood nor should we take figuring it out ‘next time’ for granted. Each time you father a child it should be an all-in investment and a growing experience. That growth will come from the humility to acknowledge what you don’t know and the courage to share what you do know. In an ideal world, everyone who fathers a child is married and has the partnership of another to enhance this great learning opportunity, but today we live in a world of diverse scenarios and unique family compositions. One size does not fit all and as such, you are not guaranteed a chapter in that book. I am saying this to motivate us to hold tight when given the privilege of parenting and do everything that your child needs before you waste precious time worrying about what you haven’t done yet.
The antagonist of a Healthy Autonomy is a controlling and over protective parent. A child needs and wants to think for him/herself, even if that means learning from foolish mistakes. In other circumstances, we might note this as the distinction between the wise man and the fool - one learns from the mistakes of others and the other has to make them himself. This idea can be taken out of context and to an extreme when a parent wants so badly for a child not to make their past mistakes; so instead they don’t let them make ANY. It is such behavior that impedes a Healthy Autonomy and denies a child their core emotional need. Children, in their natural wonderment, simply need to experiment.
Before you know it, they’ll be as old as you, staring you in the face, asking what went wrong. They’ll want to know this because we often get stuck in repetitive patterns due to a lack of understanding of our past experiences and unresolved issues from our upbringing.
Reasonable Limits are a matter of discipline, but children are naturally curious and need guidance. So as parents, responsibility rests with us to determine what that should be and how much. Unfortunately, if we shrink back due to fear, they’ll think we don’t care. If we let them do what they want, they will misbehave, irritate everyone around them, and end up with no friends, which over time will cause them to act out even more. We have to become skilled in answering the question, “How much is too much?”
2. Avoidance - we block out the pain associated with our own personal truth and run away (‘flight’).
DapperDadsMag.com JUNE 2014
John & Karen Louis refer to these cycles as “lifetraps”. Together they explain the 3 basic ways we try to cope with these lifetraps: 1. Surrender- we just give up trying to fix it and defer to fear of the truth and hopelessness or powerlessness (‘fright’).
3. Overcompensation - we are always trying to prove that we will not be or are not currently powerless, so we remain in conflict (‘fight’). If we all examine ourselves carefully, it is quite possible that at some point, we have done one, two or all three of these. That truth is not to be a deterrent, but rather a
and as people. Like the Louis’, I believe that every parent is good enough to meet their child’s needs. Many people in social work now believe that the key to cracking this code is a strength-based approach and by looking at what you do best rather than clinical faultfinding. Through years of careful research, John and Karen Louis have tapped into a wealth of possibilities that can rescue the average parent from the baggage of impending mediocrity and send them soaring to greatness.

Should more people follow this model? Do you think the independent wine labels would have enough supply to meet increased demand?
WRITTEN BY: XOLANI MANCOTYWA
RG: We have over 130 independent winemakers, so yes. And there are plenty more talented winemakers who would set up on their own if we helped them, so I don’t think that there will be any great shortage. That being said, our Australian business has had to close the doors to new customers, to protect the existing Angels, because wines were running low! DDM: When you are out for dinner, do you trust your taste buds or that of a Sommelier? Do you ever heed their advice?

This South African bor n entrepreneur has a g ood grasp of the notion of ‘counting the pennies and letting the pounds count themselves’. Gormley further believes, and is working towards consumers supporting more independent wine labels. So we decided to ask a few questions to gain insight into a brilliant wine mind, in which we can safely assume that Mr. Gormley had a great glass of wine in hand, as did I: DDM: As a South African, what is your take on the SA, UK and US wine scene? (Or any thoughts on global wine production) RG: It amazes me that, in the land of the free, wine drinkers are being ripped off so badly. American’s are paying about double what Europeans pay for the same wine. DDM: So when did you first discover you were in love with wine? the mistake of thinking that being in the wine business was being crisp chilled white wines. DDM: How did you go from the Oak trees to nakedwines.com? RG: I got fired. And fortunately 12 other colleagues left voluntarily to set up a new wine company. We knew what we didn’t want to do (copy the rest of the industry by screwing wine makers and wine drinkers) but we didn’t know what we DID want to do. It took us a few attempts to refine the model to what we have now (crowd funding indie winemakers in exchange for wholesale pricing) DDM: Sounds like getting fired was really inspirational. How does the Naked Angels concept work?
RG: Rarely. I have drunk enough over-priced, over-hyped wines to know the difference between a good wine and a good story, and too many sommeliers are interested in selling more wine at a higher price. So I turn to great apps like Delectable to see what my friends have drunk there. DDM: Last but not least, do you think wine is healthy for us? RG: In moderation? Yes. Personally, moderation is not one of my strong points. Throughout time, areas like Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Napa Valley been long standing producers of high end wines. This would lead one to think that only those with expensive tastes have access to such highly acclaimed and marketed luxuries. Despite these stereotypes, there are a few in these wine societies that actually have the finances to sustain themselves in these social events. On another note, there are also a set of wine crusaders who believe that there are equally tasteful and affordable choices out there other than the more popular brands. We recommend the use of Nakedwines.com to enjoy great wines. In addition, we encourage the support of small label wine producers. I would love a bottle that costs $5000 every night, but why over spend if the same quality can be attained at a fraction of the price. On that note, I will log onto Nakedwines.com now and become an Angel.
RG: Our Angels crowd funds winemakers, and in exchange, gets exclusive wines at wholesale prices – it is a virtuous circle, where: • Angels get better wine for less money • Winemakers do what they’re best at

LESSONS FROM AN IMPERFECT DAD WRITTEN BY: CHRISTOPHER PERSLEY It took about a year and a half into my journey as a parent before I discovered that my daughter saw me as a Superman; impervious to pain, sorrow, lying, and mistakes. I went into parenthood thinking that I would show my daughter my flaws whenever possible, so that she understood what it meant to be human. I hope she will find some use in what I am about to share.
DO NOT FEAR FAILURE Why do we fall down? So we can get back up again. I have become a full-fledged advocate of this old expression. Failing at something does not inherently mean you are a failure. It just means you’ve tried. Right around when you turned 3, you made up a song completely on your own. The title of the song was Try, Try Again. You created a song with a fantastic message. I couldn’t have agreed more. So, adopt a growth mindset. Take chances. What I mean is to raise your hand in class, and don’t fear an incorrect answer. Step up and take the last minute shot or penalty kick or swing away in the bottom of the ninth. I spent too much of my life making very calculated and completely safe decisions. Because of this, I did not pursue many great opportunities, and my career in education stalled. For years, I feared applying to a fantastic and well-respected graduate program, just because it was Ivy League. What I needed to learn was that a piece of
paper or phone call telling me I was rejected from this school, or them saying that I was not the right candidate for a position was not a true reflection of me or my capabilities. So, after much growth and help from my wife, I finally applied for admittance to this program. Not only was I accepted, but I also graduated in excellent standing. Writer Joseph Chilton Pearce sums it up well when he said, “To live a creative life, we must first lose the fear of being wrong.”
DONT SETTLE WHEN IT COMES TO LOVE You see, I took a chance on dating and marrying my wife. I spent a long time in very safe relationships, often with people who liked me more than I liked them. I also found ways to sabotage good relationships with people for whom I had strong feelings. With my wife, it was different. I knew I couldn’t and shouldn’t mess up. However, I had numerous reasons to look for a parachute and escape. We are not of the same race. She has a close family, with some very conservative members. In addition, she is insanely smart and holds a PhD. in Microbiology. Nonetheless, I did not settle. She was the right person for me, so I did what I needed to do to secure her love and support. It was and still is the best decision I ever made. So, whoever you fall for, man or woman, do not settle when it comes to love. Apple’s Steve Jobs once said, “If you
haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.”
BE A HERO NOT A BYSTANDER I have not always been the vocal advocate for social justice, but I am now. There are periods of time in my life when I would just let insensitive and inappropriate comments go. I would not share my disgust, disappointment, and disapproval. I now live by the philosophy of not “letting it go”, which is especially relevant as a parent, family member, and educator. Ignorant comments must be addressed. Prejudice must be addressed. Micro aggressions must be addressed. Ignorance must be aided. If these are not addressed, more people will be hurt, ignored, or become disillusioned. You must be an ally of social justice, because as The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” I write this as a reminder to my daughter that I am flawed. I have made mistakes and will continue to do so. Part of my job as her father is to share life lessons in the hope that she will learn from her old man’s mistakes. Most importantly, I don’t want her to be afraid to make her own mistakes. How else will she learn?

THE GENTLEMEN’S CHECKLIST WRITTEN BY: SHONA CRUZ
The Gentleman’s Checklist is not only a guide to the essentials for the dapper lifestyle but rules to live by because being a gentleman is a choice that never goes out of style.

Gentlemen, a healthy dose of both these qualities will let people know you look good, feel good and will inevitable attract people to you. So before you second guess yourself, give yourself the pep talk you need to push those shoulders back and walk like you own the place. Remember, what you convey through body language is communicated 93% stronger than verbal communication so make sure you’re sending the right message.
CONFIDENCE IS KEY!
Without that, little of what you say or do will be as effective as you would like it to be. Know your worth and what you can offer and you’ll be amazed at what gets attracted to your new emanating energy! Dig deep and find the elements that make you authentically you and own it.

SWAGGER & CHARM
SIGNATURE SCENT So she can sense your presence before she even lays eyes on you and stay on her mind long after that kiss goodnight. Did you know that fragrances smell different on every person? Everyone has a different body chemistry and because of that every scent will translate differently on your skin than the next guy. When purchasing a signature scent keep 2 things in mind: i) what you WANT to smell like and ii) what the fragrance smells like on you after a few hours. You will want to test out a few and DON’T buy the same day – make sure you still like it after the top notes have faded. A gentleman’s signature scent will not only make an impression, it’s your lasting impression… so make sure it’s a good one..

MANNERS This is not just a dying art form, it’s a must! Whether you’re walking that elderly lady across the street or holding the door open for a mom with a stroller, like it or not, your manners are saying more about you then you realize. The mark of a true gentleman can always be seen in the way he treats those around him.
CHIVALRY Because good old romance ain’t dead yet. To those gents clever enough to truly understand the locks this magical key will open, kudos to the rest of you … google it ASAP!

A GREAT SUIT …
or 3
The Gentlemen’s Wardrobe Essentials Checklist (which I plan to share in depth in an upcoming article) requires you to be presentable and appropriate for any and all occasions life brings your way. This means you will need in your wardrobe, at minimum, i) a perfectly fit black suit for the unexpected funeral or formal affair ii) navy suit for daytime functions and less formal occasions iii) grey suit, to alternate with the navy suit for daytime, less formal occasions as well as the spring/summer months. These three suits will provide you the foundation for a suiting selection for looking dapper and sophisticated no matter the occasion.
9
KNOW YOUR WINE
A gentleman is only as smooth as the wines that he enjoys. Know your basics, this doesn’t mean you need to be a connoisseur but know the difference between a Merlot and a Malbec. Taste a few and determine what your favorites are then find out what year they had the best grapes! You will be dripping of sophistication and elegance as you impress the socks (and maybe more) off your dinner date.
MENS ACCESSORIES
Because clothes don’t make the man, his accessories do. Ok so this is obviously arguable, however, a well accessorized gentleman is seen as paying attention to the fine details. So make a point of investing in that great watch, that sexy bracelet and classic sunglasses you’ve been debating; it all adds to the image and look of sophistication and class. It’s all in the details.
A GREAT TAILOR. Not an option if you do not get your suits custom made. Although I always recommend a made to measure or bespoke suit (which one is dependent on budget) given the option, if you must purchase off the rack, alterations are not something you want to take a chance with. You want people to notice YOU in the suit, not the suit you are in and a great tailor will ensure you get noticed for looking sharp.
10
VULNERABILITY What are you passionate about? Job? Car? Sports? Fashion? Family? Don’t be afraid to show off those things that hold a key to your heart – that’s what makes you human and real and nothing is more appealing than a gent who’s not afraid of his emotional side. On the other hand, it also shows that you are multi-dimensional and have hobbies and interests. Whether you are looking to impress that special someone or putting your best self forward with the bosses, showing your human side makes you seem balanced in life and in control of what you want.

COMPARISON of AMERICANS’ WEIRD HABITS
Smartphones Are More Important Than Sex and Waffles Measure Storm Severity WRITTEN BY: DAVID ADELMAN AND ALEX HILLSBERG America is facing its biggest threat to its existence. Not terrorism or the threat of weapons of mass destruction, but from mobile phones. A survey published by Statista last February revealed that more Americans would rather live without sex than without their phone. It’s one of those odd insights about us that cast doubt to our collective “superior” perception of our culture over the rest of the world. Inspired by this social shock, I started tinkering with other survey results that might corroborate my armchair findings. True enough, a pattern emerged. Had I not known I was reading social insights about us—Americans—I’d have easily thought these behavioral quirks are by some communities far deep in the Congolese jungle. Imagine a society where an increasing number of its members would rather sleep (just sleep) with a different mammal and put that in the context of an increasing number of people who believe living with another person is an option. It’s not a natural evolutionary trend. That’s us. Fifty-eight percent of Americans sleep with their cat or dog,
In the study, “The Weirdest People in the World,” behavioral scientists from the University of British Columbia in Canada rebut the traditional scientific theory that all humans have similar psychological traits. It turned out that Americans are somewhat isolated in liking the idea of getting the bigger slice of the pie, a trait frowned upon inother cultures. The researchers even labeled Americans as “weird,” meaning, different.
and 27% of us are living today in one-person household, a significant increase from 17% in the seventies. I’ve compiled other revealing behavioral facts about us that are quite funny. The French may exalt their ratatouille and the Chinese their Szechuan chicken to visitors. Both dishes are rooted in the heritage of their place of origin. On the other hand, we Americans are proud of our barbecue; it’s the top American food we’ll recommend to tourists. Surely, we can do better than suggesting meat cooked over charcoal as a national cuisine, I mean, even CroMagnons knew barbecue. The study created a buzz in anthropology. A review of the top six psychological journals in 2008 revealed that nearly 96% of subjects in psychological studies were Westerners and about 70% of them were Americans. In short, most behavioral studies used subjects from just 12% of the world’s population. That should explain why we think other people are odd. To put everything in perspective, we may be the biggest member in the bird kingdom, but other birds may see the ostrich as strikingly odd.
• 44% of Americans sleep with their phones, and only 20% of them can’t imagine their lives without sex • Lipstick sales and hemline lengths are actually quite accurate in measuring the strength of US economy • FEMA uses Waffle House menu & opening hours to estimate how bad a situation is after a storm

eaving New York City’s misty weather behind, I landed in North Carolina, embraced by the sun’s radiant rays, where I was greeted by scents of home-spun meals and warm smiles of local residents in Charlotte. When I arrived at my destination, I was received by a Captain America action figure and a bursts of laughter, along with a wide grin leading to the question, “Do you want to play?” As I innocently laughed, I said sure and the adventure began. I got a dose of southern hospitality with my delightful tour from the “Hamiltwins” Nolan and Tristen, of their spacious home.
Although it seems like many moons ago, reverting back to that age, I realized how everyday was an adventure. Upon short notice, a small basketball was thrown my way and the youngest out of the “ Hamilclan” Princeton, came over to me looking for his ball to make another slam dunk on his two feet rim. As I continued walking the smell of fresh cooked bacon, eggs, and grits filled the air and the first thing I noticed was a grand smile, and with her soft voice she asked “ Would you like something to eat?” Here I was greeted by Anthony’s better half, the matriarch, and mom Tarsha Mcmillian. Her smiled glowed more as she leaped over toy trucks, and action figures that filled the kitchen floor from yesterday’s activities to give me a warm welcoming hug. An exuberance of light laughter and music filled the air as I watched one of the eldest brothers was give his younger sibling a joy ride by lots of tickles on his belly, and spins in the cavernous living room

with large windows that welcomed the fresh sunlight into the home. “Who is making all of that noise,” asked a man who was about 5”6’ walking down steep steps in a gray shirt. Quickly the youngest of the boys eyes gazed at the man who is known for selling over two million albums, who received Grammy award recognition and continues to belt soulful tunes which put millions of fans at ease - none other than Anthony Hamilton. As many may know Hamilton is an award-winning singer whose voice has inspired millions, and has been featured on various singles with Kanye West, Drake, Jill Scott, Nappy Roots, The Roots, and countless of other artists. Many would love to be in his shoes, however, his road is no easy feat as he balances being an ultimate performer for millions as well as being an active and involved father to six sons: Anthony Jr., Romero, Tristen, Nolan, Princeton and Aaron. After a day long, yet fluid photoshoot with the Hamilton, the patriarch of the family, he made some time to speak with Dapper Dads Magazine after the shoot. As a father of six from ages 25-2, Hamilton- always makes sure he puts his family first. “I have definitely seen it all, through my own experiences as a young father, the sacrifices and learning patience, all while maintaining my career in one of the toughest industries where you always have to stay current, however I always grow and learn every day.”
Hamilton’s Ultimate sacrifice: Hamiton, also known as Anthony or “ DADDY!” as little Tristen would call him, Anthony thought being a Dad was a blessing, however, to become the award-winning artist that he is today, he had to sacrifice immensely. “When Anthony was born, man, I was so nervous, especially because I had to tell my parents. [This] was around the same time I wanted to take my talent, to the next level and I knew I wanted to pursue my dreams in music, unfortunately, I had to sacrifice time with Anthony while he was younger to focus on my craft, but I made sure to always be in his life while I was far away at times.” For fathers who have started young or older in age, each undergo different phases when bringing a new being into the world. Anthony however, expressed how much he learned so much from his mom and how much strength she has instilled in him to be the man that he is today. Adopted at age 15, Anthony continue to grow and learn from his adopted Dad who guided him throughout his different phases of manhood. “ My adopted Dad, played a major role in my life, he taught different “ manly” things especially learning how to work with my hands and building and fixing things around the house or my car, I was definitely very lucky to have a father figure like him, my mom taught me so many things, but my dad understood certain things about me that only men can understand, and I am very grateful for his role he payed in raising me.”

Fatherhood at it’s best For Hamilton, fatherhood has been a journey for him, it propelled him to be a better man, and transition from Anthony the man into fatherhood, especially dealing with the various phases of his children. “I’ve learned to have a lot of patience, I’ve also went through different phases where I lack as a man and a father and i had to learn about the different personality each child,” he says. “I’ve seen my growth. Understanding myself and them is the most beautiful thing about being a dad.” Hamilton admits that fatherhood has exposed him to many lessons that have helped to make him the man he is today, a dad who understands the importance of the influence, a father who has to be more sensitive and an individual with patience for his sons and his children with experiences that will help shape the men they will become one day. “The best part of fatherhood is seeing someone who resembles you, and it is a great thing to watch the people you have a part in creating and seeing them grow day by day.” Aside from the experiences fatherhood has exposed him to, Hamilton says he hopes his children also pick up a few key lessons along the way.
Following in Your Father’s Footsteps: Hamilton grinned slightly while adding that “I tell them, they can be whoever they want to be. I know Tristen is into music, and Anthony, but I am excited to see my boys grow, learn and progress, and as a dad I want nothing but the best for them and I want them to enjoy their careers, whatever they get into.” “I hope that they learn that anything is possible and that they have faith in God and themselves, and that, that alone can help them exceed any expectations,” he says. “I hope that they learn that love is always available and that they should always seek it. I hope they learn balance in working extremely hard and learning how to take time out to enjoy it.”
Searching for My Father, and Letting our Relationship Grow Growing up in Charlotte, NC, Hamilton realized he has a gift at the tender age of 10. He built a strong connection with his talent, music and religion during this time – but he admits that his bond with his biological father was not strong, as it was and is a progress.
“Most of his guidance in being a father went elsewhere instead of focusing on raising me, [where] for 12 years I didn’t even call him. I ended up getting adopted at age fifteen, into a family with a mother and father who were really loving and nurturing, and from then on I was able to move forward in developing my relationship with him.” Although he missed out on shared experiences with his birth father in his upbringing, Hamilton says his adoptive parents filled the void of his biological father’s absence. More than a decade passed since Hamilton communicated with his dad – and while his mother encouraged him to reach out, he says he never felt the need to do so.It was not until he met and married his wife in 2005 that Hamilton was finally convinced to reconnect with his father. “My wife wanted to meet my biological father,” he says. “She wanted to identify where I came from, so I called him.”Hamilton describes that moment as one he will never forget saying that it was a key moment in his life that allowed him to “feel free.” “I felt like a kid, I was shocked. He created me and I hadn’t seen him in a long time. I wanted that relationship the whole time and I told him I loved him,” Hamilton says. “I told him I was getting married and he said he’ll be there and he came.” Hamilton isn’t the only one who is GRATEFUL for rekindling his relationship with his father. He explains that his children can now get to know their grandfather and have that bond he has never shared with his own father. “ I love the fact that my biological father is there and that they have access to him,” he says. They know where their dad comes from and they know their grandfather, his characteristics, his presence, his guidance and a lot of things we sacrifice. I am happy that my children are reaping the benefits.” All in all, Hamilton has definitely developed into the wellrounded man he is today, a SUBSTANTIAL father, an award winning artist and an incredible human being. Being a father is challenging because you are growing day by day in raising beings and nurturing souls which is to become productive citizens in this society, and influence someone in a way which they will never forget. Hamilton has learned that he has to revert back to those different phases and transitions in his life, and ultimately he did have to make sacrifices, including the time he spent with his oldest sons, however, he knows what to do differently, and he learned from it. I myself, grew up without my father in the early phases of my life, but I learned, as long as you are still living there is still time.

Being a father is a feat within itself. But being an entrepreneurial dad can even be more challenging. Finding the good balance between your work and personal life can be a daunting task and is not for the faint-hearted; especially when you are building a brand in the realm of fashion. It takes a different type of man to establish a foundation for his home, let alone his business. Aaron Comes exemplifies how an entrepreneurial spirit, a determined attitude, and a love for both family and business can lead to success.

1.
You’ve mentioned before that you loved watching your father getting dressed in his suit and tie for work. Would you say that this experience has inspired your luxury boutique, Frederick Lynn Haberdashery? I believe we are naturally a product of our own upbringing. I looked up to my Dad and learned so much from him. Most men would say the way he tied a tie was too tight, but I think he just preferred to be sharper dressed than the next guy. I appreciate that.s experience as a business owner as well.
2.
3.
How has being a father impacted your brand? Well, it has certainly given me purpose! My parent’s middle names are Frederick and Lynn, whom I’ve named my business after. They have always instilled the importance of making the right choices and doing the right thing which are the same values I wanted to grow my business on. I hope the principles my parents instilled in me which have helped me grow my business will all be passed down to my children.
What unique services does Frederick Lynn provide for its customers? We are a full service custom clothier. If my client Pat wants a steak lunch catered in from Gibsons… We will do it. If my client wants a Valentine’s Day gift for his wife - we will suggest one. Bachelor Party in Vegas? Our team has helped with a few. We don’t just stop at your closet needs.
4.
When did you decide to open your boutique? Was there a specific occurrence that pushed you to do so? Absolutely! My wife became pregnant with our twin girls, Maeve and Vivian, and it was one of those moments when I immediately looked at my career through a different lens. After they were born I resigned from my former employer and started my company out of our detached garage. Business grew well and it was time to take the plunge and go all in!

Walk me through a day as founder of Frederick Lynn.
9.
I really never sleep. My days can be described through this quote that our team has printed out and placed on our bulletin board for us all to be reminded of, “When things don’t happen the right way...Remember it takes 6 months to build a Rolls Royce and 13 hours to build a Toyota.” But I do try to leave the showroom every day in time to get home to my wife and kids for dinner. We love to cook!
6.
7.
Unfortunately, my grandfathers were no longer living when I was born, so having the opportunity to meet them and make them an outfit would be a memorable experience if I could go back in time (they are famous in their own right!). My rock stars aren’t always famous, I like business guys… Smart business minds I can learn from. Wouldn’t mind having the Pritzker family over for a fitting!
10.
A lot of your pieces are classic, some with a slight southern feel from the classic brown leather carry-bag, to the all-white dinner jacket. Although you are a Chicago native, does southern culture serve as inspiration for some of your featured pieces? Growing up in South Dakota there wasn’t much range in fashion, and Chicago certainly has a more colorful demographic when it comes to style. I enjoy all different kinds of style and dressing a few clients for the recent Kentucky Derby surely doesn’t feel like work. Another client is having a Downtown Abbey party so creating outfits for that is a fun project to be working on. The most important factor in creating my product line was to be able to create and design clothing that would reflect and compliment my clientele. They are who I draw inspiration from and to create a product around their lifestyle was how I wanted to grow my business.
11.

You look very comfortable in suits; do you wear a suit every day to work? I used to wear 3 piece suits every day, but one of my favorite pieces right now is an incredibly soft cotton blazer I made… Think sweatshirt meets sport coat. My client Jim would say it’s his go-to as well when he travels back and forth to his vacation home in California.
12.
Will we be seeing more Frederick Lynn sightings outside of Chicago any time soon? Unfortunately, I don’t believe the trade I am in is scalable. This is very much a relationship type of business and if more locations are opened, my time gets stretched and the overall experience can become watered down. I’m more interested in being the very best I can be and controlling that, rather than focusing on expansion. We will grow in many other areas, but not additional locations.
Confident and self-made. Our client’s greatest compliment they receive on their clothing is when asked, “Where did you get that?”, they respond “thank you, I had it made”.
What kind of person do you believe Frederick Lynn is catered to? I think one of the things I love most about my business is one day I am designing suits for the 25 year old investment banker and the next I am designing suits for an 80 year old who owns his own business who still likes to get dressed up. We cater to the young and old! It keeps things fun and interesting.
Are there any national or international brands that you can see yourself collaborating with? Being a small business owner in Chicago, I would prefer to team up with other local businesses that share a common passion to create unique experiences.
How do you want a man to feel who is wearing one of your tailored pieces?
8.
Who are three famous fathers that you would like to dress?
13.
Where do you see your luxury brand 5 years from now? In Chicago still thriving as the #1 destination for custom clothes for men, women & children. Also being on e-commerce and expanding our sportswear, accessories and home furnishings.

DADDIES TO BE : A Window Into Same Sex Marriage & Family WRITTEN BY: MARJORIET MATUTE In a world where Gay marriage is finally becoming the norm, we begin to think of the bigger picture. With love comes marriage and thus the natural feeling of planning a family. Meet two men who have built their relationship on the notion that one day they would have children of their own. Benjamin Palmer, 30 currently works as the Director at an advertising agency & Joshua Penn, 28 is a University Lecturer, both met through mutual friends instantly falling in love. Both currently living in Singapore, they are scheduled to embark in more than just a lifestyle change. With a Parisian wedding planned in September of 2015 and a new job in Australia, these two gentleman hope that the Aussie way of life will inspire new traditions as they prepare themselves as Daddies-To- Be.

DDM: How soon into your relationship did you begin speaking about becoming dads? BEN & JOSH: Within the first 6 months of our relationship we had both discussed and expressed our desire to have children one day. DDM: Was there a particular reason why you chose surrogacy instead of adopting? BEN & JOSH: The adoption process in Australia is quite lengthy & cumbersome and we both had a desire to have children of our own to carry on our family genes. The natural choice for us was surrogacy. We plan to have one child from Ben’s sperm and one child from Josh’s sperm.

DDM: What obstacles have you faced individually or as a couple since starting the process? BEN & JOSH: The process and the hurdles you have to go through are quite lengthy and invasive but glad that it’s thorough and they ask questions. You would never have thought about i.e. selective reductive etc. Also there are a lot of legal hurdles to consider. We are going to have the surrogacy carried out in the USA and then bring our child back to Australia, which leaves us with a lot of legal hurdles to overcome between the different countries. DDM: Has society encouraged you to openly pursue your decision of becoming parents? BEN & JOSH: I wouldn’t say society has encouraged us in this pursuit. I think the fact that this same sex parenting is a lot more common today and has made it a realistic avenue for us. But overall this has more stemmed from a natural desire we both have to want to enrich our lives and have our own family.
148
DapperDadsMag.com JUNE 2014
Both of our families have been extremely supportive in our process and are excited that we are able to achieve our dreams. I couldn’t imagine going through this process without the love and support of our family. At the end of the day our children will be joining our wider families. DDM: What are you looking forward to as new fathers? BEN & JOSH: We look forward to being able to share our lives with our children, teach them and to learn from them. Family is hugely important to us and to have our own children would mean the world to both of us. This will be our chance to have a whole new life that will ultimately be consumed by our son/daughter and forever changed. I am sure he/she will bring many tears of joy and happiness and bring Josh and I closer. I don’t think anything I do in my life will ever be as important or mean as much to me as raising a family and being the best dad I can be to my children. It is the ultimate selfless act having children as your life suddenly becomes all about them and they depend on you for everything.
DDM: Have you received any negative feedback since announcing your plan? BEN & JOSH: We haven’t received any negative feedback at all. All of our family and friends have been so supportive and excited for us. DDM: What advice can you provide to future couples interested in becoming parents? BEN & JOSH: If you are going down the surrogacy process I would recommend doing as much research into the process as possible. I have conducted interviews with numerous companies across the globe before we decided on one. Also it is important to be aware of the legal issues/ laws pertaining to where you live. And I guess from a parenting perspective you can over think it as much as you like but sometimes in life you just need to take a
plunge and work it out as you g o. DDM: What frightens you the most about becoming parents? BEN & JOSH: The unknown! I guess no one is really ever ready to be a parent but you take that plunge and you just have to do your best. DDM: Do you believe society has finally accepted same sex households? BEN & JOSH: Fr om our ex per ience in Australia this is becoming increasingly more common and I know quite a few couples that have been through this process previously. I think it is a beautiful thing to see two people in love capable to share their love and create a family no matter who they are. Everyone should be able to experience this if they choose.
