a message from the executive director
Diversity Awareness Partnership had an incredible year full of new events, friends, partners, programs, and an increase in organizational capacity. The St. Louis community is helping us have a greater impact on key diversity and inclusion issues. I am confident that in the next decade, St. Louis will experience important transformations in the ways that we think about, assess, and act on diversity and inclusion strategies. Here are a few reasons I know we are on the right track: Companies such as Edward Jones, PwC, Ameren, Boeing, Centene, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the St. Louis Zoo, believe in exposing our young people of color to their industries and in developing their future pipelines through our youth programs 500 people attended our Diversity Summit at Webster University, during which they listened to PwC’s Maria Moats “Purple Suit” story and learned why CEO buy-in is critical to diversity success 1900 people received training and consulting around diversity awareness and inclusion strategies In the past 7 years, I have seen major changes and look forward to how our community will continue to embrace diversity even more in the future. With your continued support and our impassioned staff, Tiffany Wang, Program Manager, Claire Droste, Training & Education Manager, and Antionette Carroll, Marketing & Events Manager, our region will become a beacon for diversity.

a message from the board chair
The challenges of adding staff, increasing programming, expanding training and hosting high quality events, were met with outstanding board commitment, highly engaged staff and tremendous community support. It was an honor to serve as chairman of the board of Diversity Awareness Partnership in 2013. DAP continued its solid financial performance. The challenges of adding staff, increasing programming, expanding training and hosting high quality events, were met with outstanding board commitment, highly engaged staff and tremendous community support. I am encouraged that we will continue to increase the number of businesses and organizations we serve. This gives our excellent staff the opportunity to develop and deliver best-in-class inclusion programs. Additionally, it indicates an improvement in our community’s diversity awareness – with DAP as a primary catalyst. We continue to grow our membership, providing an avenue for our entire community to contribute to the achievement of our mission and vision. I am excited about DAP in 2014 as our board adds new talent. Our executive director and her staff will expand the reach of our services even farther than in 2013. Our community support promises to be quite favorable and new outreach opportunities will be evaluated. I am grateful for an excellent board and am honored to work with such an incredible staff. With their support, I am confident that 2014 will be a year of even greater success.

COCA has always been a place that has valued diversity and inclusion, but our work with Diversity Awareness Partnership has deepened our understanding of issues, reaffirmed our commitment to the value of diversity in its many forms, and helped us begin an organizational effort to intentionally shape our culture, policies and programs to reflect our values. I don’t see it as a one-time training effort, rather an on-going journey. Having an open conversation and building awareness are essential first steps, and I am grateful for DAP’s work with COCA to help give shape to our practice.

about the youth programs The Give Respect, Get Respect Youth Program is a collaboration between Diversity Awareness Partnership and local corporations who bring together students and teachers from the St. Louis metro area and company associates to explore race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Diversity Awareness Partnership is investing in St. Louis high school students through an externship program called the EXPLORE Career Immersion Program. Together, DAP and local businesses have developed this program to expose, empower, and encourage students of color to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and other careers.
diversity awareness partnership hosts annual “diverse city” art competition The Diversity Art Competition, themed “Diverse City: Embracing Differences in Your City,” invites students from the St. Louis metro area to submit independent artwork to help them develop personal awareness and understanding of diversity in their schools and communities. The Diversity Art Competition, formerly a Multicultural Task Force Program, was adopted by Diversity Awareness Partnership in December 2012. The Multicultural Task force held the program annually since 1996 before retiring the organization in 2013.

awareness campaigns & publications overview
Diversity Awareness Partnership, Maryville University and St. Louis Cardinals Launch Diversity Double Play Awareness Campaign Featuring No. 19 Jon Jay and No. 50 Adam Wainwright, the “Diversity Double Play” campaign was developed to encourage acceptance of individual differences while “using teamwork to shut out discrimination.” When discussing the intentions of the campaign, Reena Hajat Carroll, Executive Director of Diversity Awareness Partnership, said, “The campaign is a great way to demonstrate collaboration and engage our entire community in a conversation about the need for diversity and inclusion.” In addition to the poster series, the Diversity Double Play message was extended to area billboards. Through August, this billboard was featured on Interstate 40 east; in September it was moved to Interstate 170.
