MISSION The Darden School improves the world by inspiring responsible leaders through unparalleled transformational learning experiences. Values and principles critical to achieving excellence are: Innovative and rigorous education that develops discerning judgment and the ability to act decisively Insightful research that advances knowledge and impacts practice Inclusive community, united by honor, that enables its global and diverse members to collaborate and excel Enduring relationships that support individual and organizational growth O N T H E C OV E R : Dr. Taison Bell (EMBA ’20), who graduated in December while leading UVA Health’s coronavirus response as critical care and infectious disease specialist and director of the medical intensive care unit

LETTER FROM THE DEAN

Circumstances Change, Values Persist

“Darden had to be responsive, persistent, adaptive and resilient to navigate the disruption — and you rose to the moment with us even while facing your own challenges at work and at home.”

THE POWERED BY PURPOSE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN is framed by the pursuit of excellence in all that we do, and includes four priorities: faculty support and thought leadership, scholarships and student experience, the Darden Grounds Master Plan, and the Darden Annual Fund. Had the fiscal year ending 30 June 2020 been anything close to the year we were expecting, this 2020 Investors Report would have fully focused on unpacking the campaign priorities and our progress toward them thanks to your generous support. As planned, the fiscal year began with the final stretch of the campaign’s silent phase, leading to its energized public launch in October — a truly transformational moment in the history of the Darden School. Soon after, the coronavirus pandemic struck. The circumstances required an unprecedented pivot to the virtual classroom across degree and non-degree programs; a seismic shift in the way we work and learn; and an unwavering commitment to the health, safety and well-being of our community. As the theme of this report suggests, to navigate the disruption, the School had to be responsive, persistent, adaptive and resilient — and you rose to the moment with us even while facing your own challenges at work and at home. Like no moment in my tenure as dean, I witnessed the power of our 17,000-strong alumni community to sustain hope and drive meaningful, rapid, necessary change. The 2020 Investors Report reinforces that notion as it leads you through a recap of a year marked by two momentous and radically different events: the public launch of Darden’s $400 million campaign in October and the onset of the pandemic in March. While we never lost sight of our critically important fundraising priorities, our focus in the spring and early summer recalibrated from the long-term nature of campaign goals to urgent short-term needs. We concentrated on doing what was right for our students, faculty, staff and alumni, and I believe we will emerge from the pandemic in a stronger position as a top business school set to achieve the ultimate goals of the Powered by Purpose campaign. Last year, I wrote that we have an opportunity to show the world that Darden values create value and that purpose drives progress. This year, through your responsiveness, persistence, adaptability and resilience, you proved it. Together, when the world shifted, we pivoted, and in doing so, we showed that circumstances may change but values persist. With gratitude,

Scott C. Beardsley Dean and Charles C. Abbott Professor of Business Administration

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Confident, Resilient and Prepared to Meet Any Moment

“Darden is more than capable of facing the current moment and excelling in the future, due in large part to the confidence and resilience of the School’s purpose-driven alumni, cultivated during our incredible experience on Grounds.”

ANY GIVEN YEAR IS DEFINED by its critical moments. How we respond determines our success. In my second year serving as chair of the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees, that core lesson was clearer than ever. Three moments stand out. The loss of Professor John Colley, a longtime mentor for me and many others, brought the Darden community together to honor this all-time teaching legend. The historic launch of the $400 million Powered by Purpose campaign in support of UVA’s $5 billion Honor the Future campaign made us proud of all we had accomplished and all we hope to achieve. The coronavirus pandemic forced us to reconsider our priorities and what really matters. Based on what I witnessed this year, I believe Darden is more than capable of continued excellence now and in the future, due in large part to the confidence and resilience the School’s purpose-driven alumni cultivated during our incredible experience on Grounds. You met John Colley’s passing with an outpouring of support honoring his memory. You created incredible momentum for the School through generosity in the silent phase of the campaign, surpassing 50 percent of the total $400 million goal by the time the campaign launched publicly. You responded to Darden’s need to take swift action due to the pandemic, doing so with record-breaking support for the Darden Annual Fund. In every case, you took action because Darden alumni are prepared to meet — and exceed — the moment, no matter what the moment may be. The 2020 fiscal year fundraising results demonstrate that Darden graduates realize this unparalleled education experience must be preserved, and no obstacle is too big to do so. I am incredibly impressed by the School’s leadership, faculty, board members and alumni volunteer leaders who, working with the full alumni base, collectively and energetically answer the call for Darden. I am grateful to all of the donors listed in this report who took action in this unprecedented year. Thank you for your leadership as we power Darden’s purpose. Sincerely,

Bob Hugin (MBA ’85) Chair, Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees

at Darden sprouts quickly from the celebrations that help close out the prior year. The summer of 2019 brought the joys of annual traditions: welcoming new faculty and students and launching new programs. It was also the time when the incredible responsiveness of donors drove unprecedented support to successfully complete the silent phase of the School’s Powered by Purpose capital campaign, prepare for the campaign’s inspiring public launch, expand events at UVA Darden DC Metro and welcome the first fellow of the new McGowan Fellows Program. A NEW FISCAL YEAR

The silent phase of the Powered by Purpose campaign was highlighted by incredible support for new scholarships and the student experience.

SILENT PHASE

Making Our Moment of the campaign was called the silent phase, Darden’s momentum sounded like a freight train. UVA Darden DC Metro Extends Its Impact Above: In December 2019, the School put the finishing touches on the Sands Family Grounds in Arlington, Virginia, with new branding elements and cutting-edge interior design that enhanced a setting fit for the world’s best education experience.

DARDEN GROUNDS have expanded beyond the Goodwin Family Grounds in Charlottesville. On the banks of the Potomac, alongside the nation’s capital, UVA Darden DC Metro at the Sands Family Grounds is a thriving extension of the world’s best education experience. In August 2019, Darden graduated its first cohort of the Master of Science in business analytics (MSBA), hosted at UVA Darden DC Metro and jointly offered by Darden and UVA’s McIntire School of Commerce. Among the first graduates of the

12-month degree program for working professionals, 72 percent reported a role or job change over the course of the program, with an average salary increase of 19 percent to $123,604. UVA Darden DC Metro also launched a new, prestigious speaker series at the start of the year called Leadership Unscripted. Keynote speakers have included Case Foundation CEO Jean Case, former Save the Children CEO Carolyn Miles (MBA ’88) and former President of Ireland Mary Robinson. The growing success of UVA Darden DC Metro is possible thanks to donor support, including a $5 million gift from Frank M. Sands Sr. (MBA ’63) and Frank Sands (MBA ’94), which seeded the construction of the Sands Family Grounds in a high-rise building in Arlington, Virginia.

The Next Generation of Top Faculty DARDEN WELCOMED seven new professors at the start of the year to the faculty ranked the best in business education by The Princeton Review and The Economist. With their arrival, nearly 40 new professors joined the faculty from August 2015 to August 2019. Meet the next generation of teachers and researchers working to carry on Darden’s tradition of faculty excellence, which is one of the four priorities of the Powered by Purpose campaign.

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH DARDEN BEGAN as a student from the Midwest who came to Grounds not knowing what I did not know. It was in the Darden classroom and in the relationships forged with my classmates and our professors that I began to realize the importance of forging your own path and defining your individual purpose to make the world a better place. When I consider the goals of the Powered by Purpose campaign — faculty, thought leadership and curricular innovation; scholarships, financial aid and the student experience; the Darden Grounds Master Plan, technology and innovation; and the Darden Annual Fund — I realize supporting this endeavor is the ultimate way to give back to Darden. The Powered by Purpose campaign provides an opportunity for us to pass on the Darden experience to all who grace our Grounds, who join our incredible community, who partake in the case method, who soak up the ideas of our faculty, and who engage at any level with the School’s transformational education experience. The continued support of the Darden community will power the purpose of people whose impact on the world goes far beyond what we could accomplish alone. Thank you for sharing in this moment. A Transformational Gift for FirstGeneration Students Above: David Walentas (MBA ’64) celebrated the launch of UVA’s Honor the Future campaign in Charlottesville in October 2019 with his late wife, Jane.

THE PUBLIC L AUNCH of UVA’s Honor the Future campaign in October 2019 was made even more exciting with the announcement of a transformational $100 million gift from David Walentas (MBA ’64) and his late wife, Jane, to the Jefferson Scholars Foundation. The bulk of the gift — $75 million — is committed to scholarships and fellowships for first-generation

students, with the remaining $25 million dedicated to fellowships and professorships. The gift created $38 million in impact to Darden through a new Walentas Fellowship Program for first-generation students, additional funding for the existing Darden Jefferson Fellowship Program and a new Jefferson Scholars Foundation Professorship in real estate. While David and Jane Walentas were able to celebrate the gift announcement in October, the UVA and Darden communities mourned the loss of Jane in July, following her fight with cancer. She passed on a legacy as a discerning philanthropist who made it possible for others to achieve success and experience the exhilarating beauty of art.

IN NOVEMBER 2019, Darden announced a $3 million gift from Thomas R. Watjen (MBA ’81) and his wife, Nanette, matched with an additional $1.5 million from the UVA Bicentennial Scholars Fund, to create the $4.5 million Edward A. Watjen Bicentennial Scholarship Fund. This new fund will be incorporated with an existing military scholarship fund established by the Watjens several years ago, the Edward A. Watjen Military Fellowship Fund, for a total impact of nearly $6 million. The fund will support scholarships for students who come to Darden with a military background, with a preference for those who graduated from Virginia Military Institute. The fund is named after Watjen’s father, who was a first-generation college graduate and served in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft mechanic.

The professorship honors Waitzer’s father, an entrepreneur who died in January 2019 after a 65-year business career built around treating people fairly and acting ethically. Waitzer and his father became increasingly concerned about a crisis of values at institutions, and Darden’s focus on business ethics and global reach made this investment a logical way for Waitzer to leverage his philanthropy. founder and Silicon Valley venture capital pioneer John Glynn, a member of the Darden faculty and Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees, in March made a $3 million gift to establish the John and Barbara Glynn Chair in Venture Capital. The John and Barbara Glynn Chair in Venture Capital is a significant step toward achieving Darden’s vision of establishing a research center for venture capital at the School.

MOMENT OF

It took Darden being uniquely Darden. None of it would have been possible without the Darden Annual Fund, which provided an immediate source of relief for students who were struggling. “We had to make significant investments to make all classes virtual,” said Dean Scott Beardsley. “We quickly took several actions that were necessary to deliver an online classroom environment that met our mission-driven standard of unparalleled transformational learning experiences.” From Crisis Comes Opportunity Darden’s response to COVID-19 didn’t stop with a quick pivot in March. Preparing for an uncertain future took tremendous time, talent and resources over months of planning. “Developing a plan to deliver the world’s best business education experience within the constraints

of the pandemic required us to completely rethink even the most basic aspects of program delivery from the ground up,” said Beardsley. “The annual fund is providing critical resources that allow us to implement new ideas and best practices.” The annual fund was a go-to source that allowed the School to say “yes” to finding solutions to student concerns. It served as a critical funding source for student support to help: ield the Class of 2022 via Y scholarship funding Cover costs for five major career

As with the rest of the world, life at Darden changed drastically in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With only a week’s notice, classes moved online midquarter. Social events were also conducted via Zoom. Students faced uncertainty regarding their job and internship searches. Yet as Batten Media Fellow Sam Werner (MBA ’20) wrote in his The Darden Report feature capturing students’ experience in spring 2020, the challenge allowed the School to show off its best attributes: the passion faculty and staff have for the student experience, the amount of care students have for each other and the resourcefulness of the community as a whole. The rapid pivot to virtual learning took a willingness among School leadership to remain flexible. It took careful levels of coordination among the instructional design and classroom support teams. It took a deep reservoir of mutual goodwill among faculty and students.

INVESTMENTS IN LIFELONG LEARNING ENABLE VIRTUAL PIVOT Made possible through the generous support of Frank M. Sands Sr. (MBA ’63), Darden Executive Education & Lifelong Learning (EELL) announced its Alumni Lifelong Learning 2020 program in February. Through the program, EELL waived the program cost to participate in one of its open programs available in 2020 for all Darden alumni, and more than 150 graduates participated by signing up for a course. Thanks to Sands’ gift and work Darden had already begun to pivot toward the future of lifelong learning, EELL was able to quickly bring many courses online and launch new virtual courses when the coronavirus pandemic struck in March. Alumni taking advantage of the Lifelong Learning 2020 program, alongside other

clients and participants, joined courses such as Leading Virtual Teams Through Disruption and Leading With Humanity: New Skills for the Digital Age to help meet the unprecedented challenges facing them. “This program, and the launch of the timely and relevant virtual courses in response to the pandemic, are examples of Darden’s continuing investment in lifelong learning,” said Ashley Williams, CEO and chief learning officer of EELL. “We are committed to extending the reach of the world’s best education experience throughout a lifetime of professional and personal growth.”

ACTION TO ENSURE INCLUSION AND E Q U I T Y AT D A R D E N The coronavirus pandemic was not the only critical issue impacting students, the School, business and society this spring. As protests for racial justice and equity spread globally in June, Darden responded with a sweeping commitment to

Thanks to support for the annual fund, nimble responses to the biggest challenges facing business, society and graduate business education are a competitive advantage for Darden.

DARDEN GROUNDS MASTER PLAN

e Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees Th voted to support construction of the new UVA Inn at Darden and Conference Center for Lifelong Learning. The project is supported by $20 million in philanthropy from Frank M. Sands Sr. (MBA ’63). The inn and conference center will be named in Sands’ honor, but significant naming opportunities remain to support its completion. P lans to renovate C. Ray Smith Alumni Hall were supported in fiscal year 2019 by $7.2 million in matching funds from Sands Sr., and numerous alumni stepped up to the matching challenge in fiscal year 2020. Significant naming opportunities remain to support its completion. The landscape-transforming arboretum and botanical gardens will surround the inn and conference center and renovated C. Ray Smith Alumni Hall. The arboretum received an initial $5 million in support from George (MBA ’86) and Laurel Tahija, and significant naming opportunities remain to support its completion. Thanks to generous gifts from several alumni, Darden began renovating the Abbott Center Dining Room. The initial phase of renovations to the dining center updated décor, including new paint, carpet and selected furniture, to enhance the sense of openness and give the space a more contemporary feel. The W.L. Lyons Brown III Innovation Laboratory (i.Lab) will transition in 2021 from its existing North Grounds location to a new, dynamic space in Darden’s main classroom building. As a first step, two existing theater-style classrooms were updated to become one large flat classroom, providing more flexibility for interactive learning and collaboration. To enhance virtual delivery capabilities, the School converted another of its theater-style classrooms into two studios purpose-built for virtual delivery of courses in Darden’s degree programs, non-degree programs from Darden Executive Education & Lifelong Learning, and other programs and events.

32

John B. Jung (MBA ’84) & Connie B. Jung

Brad Waitzer (MBA/JD ’87) & Terry Waitzer

John B. Jung recently retired as senior managing director and head of capital markets at BB&T, ending a 37-year career with the organization. Jung was responsible for leading BB&T Capital Markets, which included sales and trading, origination, mergers and acquisitions, tax-exempt finance, and foreign exchange. In addition, he was responsible for integrating BB&T Capital Markets with BB&T’s Corporate and Community Banks. Jung was a member of BB&T’s senior leadership team and served on many public and private boards. He recently established the Jung Family Professorship for an emerging scholar on the Darden faculty.

Brad Waitzer is president of Signature Management Corp., a Virginia Beachbased professional property management company, and vice chair of the Eastern Virginia Medical School Foundation in Norfolk. He is passionate about business leaders prioritizing ethics and values in their organizations and the concept that businesses should consciously serve a much larger constituency than just its investors, employees and customers. He recently established the Richard M. Waitzer Professorship in Business Ethics, honoring his father, whose long career centered on treating people fairly and acting ethically. “Darden transformed my life, and Terry and I are excited to invest in its future,” Waitzer said.

Darden Society The Darden Society is a group of annual supporters who demonstrate a commitment to the School through gifts to Darden. Gifts at the Darden Society level of $2,500 per year (or $1,000 per year for Darden’s four most recent graduating classes) provide funding for the School’s most immediate priorities.

As a benefit of membership, all Darden Society members receive the exclusive rosette pin, a symbol of Darden pride that has been in production and that has recognized members since the society’s founding. Members also receive invitations to Darden events and gatherings.

“Graduating from Darden gave me the opportunity to change careers and pursue a field that I love. It was a privilege to be able to attend Darden, and now I’m proud to donate so that others can have the same incredible experience that I had.” — Ann Redpath Nilsen (MBA ’15)

Corporate Partners As Darden fulfills its mission to inspire responsible business leaders, it is only fitting that the School partners with businesses that share a desire to improve society. Initial resources to establish Darden came from a small group of Virginia business leaders who provided both financial support and advisory expertise for the School, setting the foundation for Darden’s strong relationship with the corporate world today. Corporate support continues to amplify the School’s mission, especially through corporate partnerships. We proudly recognize these companies and their dedicated Darden alumni for unwavering generosity and leadership.

At Darden, the positive impact of the School’s strong relationships with corporations on the student experience is undeniable. This fiscal year, HBM Holdings made a gift to Darden, which generated additional support through UVA’s Bicentennial Scholars Fund, to establish the Mike and Lee DeCola Family Scholarship Fund. This gift honors the longstanding service of Mike DeCola (MBA ’77) as president and CEO of HBM and supports scholarships for students at Darden. “We are excited by this opportunity to empower future Darden students and show our gratitude for Mike’s many contributions,” said Margaret Mathews Jenks, member of the Mathews family of HBM Holdings.

Leading Supporters of the 2020 Darden Annual Fund Through the Darden Annual Fund, everyone can shape the transformational experience for which Darden is known. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends, the Darden Annual Fund raised a record-breaking $6.06 million to support innovation, recruit and retain worldclass faculty and staff, provide scholarships for deserving students, enhance Darden’s impact and stature around the world, and ensure the School lives its value as a diverse, global community. As Darden pivoted in response to the coronavirus pandemic, support from the annual fund helped to cover technology costs associated with the transition to virtual operations, provide financial support to minimize hardship on students, increase financial aid and expand scholarship opportunities for the Class of 2022, allowing the School to preserve its unparalleled educational experience.

REUNION GIVING

Reunion Giving Reunion giving allows classes to align philanthropy to impact the future of the School and honor its legacy of excellence. Gifts to Darden by reunion-year alumni generated more than $5.9 million to support Darden’s mission, despite the postponement of the 2020 Darden Reunion Weekend due to the coronavirus pandemic. Three classes leveraged their reunion years to bolster support for class scholarships: The Class of 1970 Scholarship was expanded this year. This scholarship will serve as a yield scholarship with preference to support a prospective student with a history of military service. The Class of 1985 Mark A. Kaish Bicentennial Scholarship was created in memory of classmate Mark Kaish, and leveraged matching dollars from UVA’s Bicentennial Scholars Fund,

to support a need-based scholarship for Darden students in perpetuity. The Class of 2015 EMBA Jeffrey Hammond Long Scholarship was created in memory of classmate Jeff Long to support scholarships for students in the Executive MBA program. The hallmark moment for reunion classes is returning to Charlottesville to catch up with faculty and friends during Darden Reunion Weekend. To ensure the health and safety of alumni, faculty, staff and students during the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Darden Reunion Weekend was postponed from its original date, but the School is developing plans to host reunion events virtually in 2021. Reunion giving totals reflect new commitments made to Darden from 1 July 2019 through 30 September 2020.

Powered by Persistence In October 2019, Brian Cowan (MBA ’91) was honored posthumously by Darden and the Darden Alumni Association Board of Directors with the 2019 Harry N. Lewis Distinguished Service Award. The high honor is bestowed on an alumni volunteer leader who has dedicated exceptional, longtime volunteer service to the School, a class or an alumni chapter, as well as demonstrated a passionate and creative commitment to engaging alumni in the ongoing life of the School. Cowan’s wife, Connie Hallquist (MBA ’91), joined by their daughter, Anna Cowan, accepted the award on behalf of her late husband. “Brian Cowan was a true friend to Darden,” said Darden School Foundation President Michael Woodfolk (TEP ’05). “He was simply known as the glue that kept that class together.”
