DARDEN EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

“The Executive Program is an intense learning experience built on the Jeffersonian learning ideal of a community of learners in which students and faculty come together in a common pursuit of knowledge. Ideas are tested through open dialogue, capitalizing on the diverse perspectives of the faculty and participants. The deeply integrated curriculum attends to both physical and mental well-being. Because problems and opportunities at the top cross functional boundaries, we design and deliver The Executive Program experience in faculty teams, breaking down our own silos to help you break down yours. Our classes build on and complement each other — leading to a cumulative learning experience that is the world’s best. We deliver the core — business acumen, leadership, innovation and growth, with a global perspective — and go beyond the core. A set of enrichment activities and sessions punctuate your three weeks in the program.

We believe that how you learn is as important as what you learn. In The Executive Program, we create a learning environment that is rich, intense, memorable, impactful and potentially transformational. That is our value proposition to you. A world-class learning experience.”

A TRANSFORMATIONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE Effective, strategic leadership at the top requires thinking strategically, leading strategically and influencing strategically. The Executive Program offers senior leaders a powerful, three-week, holistic experience, through which you will gain new knowledge and skills, fine-tune your strengths and challenge your way of thinking as you lead your organization in today’s complex, global world.

WORLD’S BEST EXPERIENCE

Distinguishing Features of The Executive Program: Strategic Leadership at the Top Darden’s Powerful Learning Environment Named the world’s best “education experience” (The Economist, 2011–12), Darden combines the case-study method with experiential learning to immerse you in the challenges senior executives face every day in the business world.

Solve Real-World Challenges. At Darden, we believe the best training for a business leader is to put you in a decision-making role. Using case studies and simulations, we put you in the shoes of current and past executives at companies, who have to make difficult decisions with limited information. Instead of listening to lectures, you will analyze real-life business situations and will become a better leader by asking the right questions, thinking strategically and offering solutions.

Learn With a Team.

During the program, you will be part of a learning team — a small group of experienced senior executives with unique perspectives — with which you will prepare for, and then review, the day’s learning activities. Working with a diverse group of your peers will hone your ability to reconcile differing viewpoints, make decisions amid ambiguity, and challenge, persuade and inspire others.

8

DARDEN EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

Darden’s Four-Step Learning Process Darden’s experiential learning approach is based on a four-step learning process, which allows for complete understanding, integration and application of the materials. 1. Prepare each assignment on your own. 2. Share your thinking, reflections and ideas with your learning team, the group of five or six senior executives with whom you will study. 3. Engage in a lively discussion in class with the full complement of participants, guided by one or more professors. Learn how other learning teams approached the assignment and how they handled the challenges in that day’s learning activities. 4. Reflect on how your own capabilities are changing as a result of the learning experiences and interactions you are having with your learning team, class and professors. Consider how you can apply these concepts, creating real-time value for you and your organization. www.darden.virginia.edu/exed/tep

WORLD’S BEST CURRICULUM

A FRESH LOOK AT VALUE CREATION FOR YOU AND YOUR ORGANIZATION 20

The companies that perform best in an industry are those that are able, in a tough and competitive environment, to find the Value Creation Zone, where opportunities and preparation intersect for sustained growth. Finding your company’s ideal position in the marketplace, where it competes effectively for existing value while developing new sources of value, requires strategic thinking. Leaders at the top must have global and strategic acumen and manage the growth of their organizations, as well as their personal growth. 21

Teaching matters at Darden, and Darden professors are renowned for their engaging, empowering classroom discussions and their accessibility. CNNMoney/ Fortune wrote in 2012, “Darden is the only B-school in the United States to have a score in the top 20th percentile of Bloomberg Businessweek’s student satisfaction surveys over 24 years for exceptional teaching.” During case discussions, Darden’s faculty members capture your nuggets of wisdom on the chalkboards and challenge you to “tell us more.” Their master facilitation encourages you to learn from diverse perspectives and generate fresh ideas. TEP faculty team is committed to your personal and professional development, both during your time at Darden and throughout your career. The team spends months preparing the curriculum with the goal of creating a relevant and energizing experience for you. WORLD’S BEST FACULTY

The Faculty Team The Darden School’s mission is to develop responsible leaders with an enterprise perspective who lead, act and communicate with an understanding of how all areas of an enterprise interrelate. Darden’s faculty has a deep history of connecting to and understanding the participants, drawing out their underlying motivations, concerns, wishes, dreams and desires. The faculty uses these insights to help professionals grow personally and professionally. To develop this broad perspective, The Executive Program’s faculty team prepares an integrated curriculum, and class conversations are often guided by more than one professor. For example, a conversation on doing business in China leads to a case study on the Haier Group, a world leader in home appliances founded in Qingdao. Three professors steer the discussion: Marian Moore from the perspective of marketing, Venkat on strategy and Alec Horniman on leadership and organizational behavior. The exchange reveals the complexity of business and the importance of understanding a business situation from multiple points of view.

S. VENKATARAMAN — STRATEGY

Faculty Leader An internationally renowned scholar and educator in the field of entrepreneurship, Venkataraman teaches courses in strategy, entrepreneurship and ethics. He began his career as co-founder of a successful Indian technology spinoff. He consults with Fortune 500 firms and advises companies, universities and governments on strategy.

ALAN R. BECKENSTEIN — THE GLOBAL ECONOMY Head of Darden’s Global Economies and Markets area, Beckenstein teaches executives about open-economy macroeconomics, policy tools and the politics associated with them, emerging markets and global investing. His courses look at the past, present and the future. He has been the leader of significant learning activities in the public and private sector in New Zealand for 20 years.

28 DARDEN EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

JOLENE H. BODILY — WELLNESS Bodily’s “Sleep. Eat. Exercise. Rejuvenate.” framework helps executives enhance physical and mental energy, focus and stamina. Executive capacity, endurance and health are increased through coaching and practice tools designed for real life. A registered dietitian with a Master of Public Health, Bodily develops and delivers health, fitness and nutrition programs to private and corporate clients.

ROBERT F. CONROY — FINANCE Conroy’s classes on corporate finance, valuation in financial markets, and derivative securities prepare executives to navigate a global economy. Conroy serves as chair of the full-time format of the Darden MBA. He has published numerous articles and cases on capital markets, and his research focuses on the Japanese financial markets. He has held a CFA charter since 1996.

ALEXANDER B. HORNIMAN — BEHAVIORAL PSYCHOLOGY AND LEADERSHIP Horniman’s “Leading, Learning and Change” framework has inspired thousands of leaders to think differently about how they lead and influence others. His classes aim to heighten your self-awareness and help you better understand your strengths as an influencer and a leader. Horniman served in the U.S. Army and as a special consultant to U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara.

ROBERT D. LANDEL — SYSTEMS Landel brings realism to the “Four Ps” framework — Purpose, People, Processes, Performance — and provides an integrated, systems-thinking approach to business. He teaches courses in innovation and operations strategy, systems thinking and operational effectiveness. Landel consults with companies to develop high-performance work systems and coaches mid- and top-level executives in operations.

MARIAN CHAPMAN MOORE — MARKETING STRATEGY Moore emphasizes marketing as a system to design, deliver and sustain the customer value proposition. Moore designed the MBA for Executives format of the Darden MBA and has conducted pioneering research on consumers’ emotional responses to advertising and marketing managers’ strategic decision-making processes. She consults with major law firms, providing expert testimony on several marketing-related issues, such as brand infringement and dilution. www.darden.virginia.edu/exed/tep
