Through my journey, I have had the opportunity to hear the stories of so many of these outstanding individuals and have been greatly inspired by their drive to make a change— a change in the industry, as well as myself.

And with this, I’d like to present you with DARE Magazine, an interactive fashion and beauty magazine for women like me— women with curves.

What was once my dream is now a reality and this reality now lies in the palm of your hands (or should I say, the click of your mouse!).

Creating a magazine from start to finish has always been a dream of mine. The real question was: what did I want to fill the pages of my magazine with? A focus on fashion was a given, but how would I approach this? Who did I want reading my publication? The answer was simple.

The answer is me. I want women like myself to be reading this magazine—fashion-forward ladies who have a strong passion for style and an eagerness to try new trends, who also happen to wear a size 12 and up.

DARE Magazine shares with women, like us, that you can look amazing and feel confident no matter what your size. Look at the stunning Erika on page 21 sporting the floral trend, or bombshell Kristina on page 33 wearing the season’s hottest swimwear. These ladies have made a statement.

The same statement that DARE hopes to prove to its readers, that style simply has no size.

But, to be honest, I have not always felt this way. From studying fashion and working in the industry, I have been exposed to fashion advertising that promotes sizes that I, no matter how hard I tried, could never attain. I felt ignored and resented by clothing stores, magazines and the fashion world in general.

With the rise of plus, especially in Canada, my perspective has completely changed. A community of confident and inspirational curvy bloggers, boutique owners, designers, models

Karen Ward is a PhD student, store owner, and blogger.

She writes the blog Curvy Canadian, a website created as a resource for plus size women in Canada. She also owns Your Big Sister’s Closet, a plus size boutique in Toronto.

She is currently working on a PhD in Medieval Drama (she likes to keep busy). Her goal is to be an advocate for and aid to plus size women who are looking for the inspiration necessary to dress to express themselves.

D: What trends do we see in this collection?

J: EDIT is an essential collection of carefully selected styles that I’ve handpicked after searching the globe for the world’s perfect fashion pieces. From flirty tops and pants in bold colours to crop pants and shirt-dresses, EDIT encompasses my iconic style for spring – fresh, fun, and inspiring.

D: The plus fashion industry in Canada is constantly expanding thanks to bloggers, models and of course, your new collection—what do you see for the future of this industry?

What are your plans for The EDIT’s plus-size line?

J: In terms of the industry’s future, that’s a big question.

People are so fashion savvy these days, and customers are demanding high standards terms of design and styling. The future of the industry in Canada is questionable at this point in time. We certainly have tons of talent, but we don’t always have the market to support these designers, and many are forced to leave. I think the only way we’ll survive is to support our own, and truly celebrate our Canadian brands. Our national identity depends on it! As far as EDIT goes, I’d like the offering to grow and stimulate a dialogue with my customer so I can find out more about what she really craves, and needs.

D: How has the response been to the arrival of your new collection? Are you surprised by this feedback?

J: The response has been amazing! It is definitely a growing market, and I am so happy that now everyone can enjoy it.

I wouldn’t say that I am surprised by this feedback because I’ve always been aware of the challenges in finding plus-size fashion, however I am thrilled by all the great and positive comments.

D: What is your personal favorite piece from this line in terms of how it flatters a woman’s shape?

J: I love the chiffon over-shirts. It’s a beautiful basic, diaphanous and sensual, and it comes in peach and a python print. These shirts are great layering pieces for women of any size—a wardrobe staple that you can wear in your own individual way, open, buttoned up, or belted...

DARE: How did the idea of expanding EDIT by introducing a plus-size collection arise? What was your inspiration?

JEANNE: I was inspired by both my best friend and sister to bring the EDIT line to the plus-size market. It has always been my dream to dress all shapes and sizes, since I’ve always heard the complaints and frustrations from my family and friends when growing up. I think women of all shapes and sizes deserve to be offered great style!

A PLUS SIZE FASHION EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY BY JO GORSKY and anything else we feel our public will enjoy!

The first event we produced took place on April 6 2013: “Love the Skin You’re In – A Plus Size Fashion Event”. It was held at Theatre Plaza – a beautiful repurposed cinema that still holds many elements of its original décor. We featured brands, designers and boutiques, including: Igigi by Yuliya Raquel (California), Melanie Dubuc Fashion (Ottawa), SexyPlus Clothing (Toronto), Glamour Montreal (Montreal), Creations SIS (Montreal), Toutounes Atomiques (Montreal), Mystique Pleasures (Online), and 2 Montreal based accessory lines: Tarte Nouveau Designs and K8 Jewelry.

To entertain the crowd for the evening, we had 21 gorgeous models of all shapes and sizes strutting their stuff on the catwalk, 2 curvy and dynamic burlesque performers, as well as a captivating plus size cabaret singer. Mixed in, we also held a raffle wherein we gave away gift certificates to participating retailers and gifts from other local companies.

When plus sized model Yael Perez and her friend Megan MacGregor started P.S. Montreal, it was intended to be many things. However, above all else, it was and is intended to be a resource for women – both in Montreal (in person) and abroad (online), all the while catering to a plus size niche.

We’re a space that promotes positive body image and size acceptance/diversity.

We’ve started and maintain a directory of stores, blogs, health resources, and other useful pages to suggest to our followers based on our own personal experiences.

We use our blog to review clothing, events, and current news – all relating to the plus size world. We also use it as a tool to empower our readers by giving them the opportunity to be featured in our Outfit of the Week posts.

We are looking into organizing “model for a day” photo shoots since we get a lot of messages from women aspiring to get their feet wet in the world of modeling and who also simply want beautiful photos of themselves showing how confident they are in their own skin.

Our upcoming events will include yoga classes geared towards the plus size body, burlesque events promoting positive body image,

More plus size fashion lines and boutiques have been springing up across the country. One has to wonder, why the sudden explosion? Why are plus size women seeing so many new options where there weren’t any before? The answer lies in social media.

In the last decade we have seen the impact social media has made in day-to-day life. News travels around the world within seconds, and everyone gets to voice their opinions on any topic. This is exactly what happened in the plus size community. Frustrated shoppers took to Facebook, Twitter, and blogs to voice their anger over the lack of choice in plus size fashion. Karen Ward, founder of style blog Curvy Canadian and owner of the new Toronto boutique Your BIG Sister’s Closet, is one of these women who wanted to write about her frustrations: “I thought about how amazing it would be if I could write candidly about my experiences of being fat. Eventually, I got the courage to “come out” as a proud fat woman to my family and friends, and I’ve honestly never been happier or felt better both physically and mentally.” Karen be-

gan researching what fashion options a curvy woman had and shared her findings through her blog. “I started posting links for fellow plus Canadians who were also frustrated,” says Karen. Besides a guide of where to buy clothing, Karen says her blog shows, “a plus size woman who is confident in her own body and doesn’t just want to use clothes to cover everything up.

I am happy with who I am and how I look, and I think that speaks to a lot of plus size women who might be struggling with embracing their bodies.” Curvy Canadian draws between 12 and 15 thousand readers each month and that numbers grows by about one thousand every month.

Blogger Aisha Fairclough started writing her blog, Fat in the City, so that women would have a place to see fashionable clothing for the curvy girl.

It is difficult for a plus size woman to envision what an article of clothing will look like on her when it is modeled on the average size 6 model.

However, with more and more plus size fashion lines and clothing stores coming up, the need for plus size models is also on the rise. Ben Barry is the founder of Ben Barry Agency, a modeling agency that represents models of differing age, size, and height. Ben says he has seen an increase in the need for plus size models particularly in the last three years and he has ten times more plus size models at his agency today than he had ten years ago. Ben agrees that social media has played a big part in the rise of plus size fashion: “the curvy consumer wants to be represented in fashion, and she is making her voice known via social media. Fashion brands are responding by

“we bring to our customers what they cannot find elsewhere, what is missing in the marketplace.

We bring something special. And we bring it in sizes 12 to 32.” There are three vital things that SexyPlus Clothing can provide to the curvy shopper that other stores can not: selection, style, and service. Stefanie’s customers, “feel like they belong and that finally, there is a store that understands them. But most importantly, we genuinely believe our customers are beautiful and perfect in their own unique way.” This is what the plus size community has been missing, a store they can walk into and instantly feel welcomed.

It’s hard for a fat person to envision themselves in an outfit that is being modeled by a size 6 model.”

Both Karen and Aisha see a correlation between blogs dedicated to plus size fashion and the increase of plus size clothing boutiques and clothing lines. Karen says, “since about one third of all Canadian women are plus size, this one third is getting more and more fed up with the lack of options, and thus they are becoming more vocal.” She also mentions that the apparel business is in a decline because of the economy but plus apparel is growing so it’s no longer a category retailers can afford to ignore.

In the past, plus size women were forced to shop online because there were so few stores that carried clothing in their size. But Aisha feels that, “online shopping shouldn’t be the only option when it comes to buying plus size. Plus size consumers deserve the right to walk into any store and purchase current and affordable fashions.” Many people have heard this complaint and have done something about it. And this is why we are seeing a flourishing of plus size boutiques.

Stefanie Augusteijn, owner of SexyPlus Clothing, felt like she had to take matters into her own hands when it came to finding clothing: “as a plus size woman, and having been this way all my life, I was frustrated that there were so few options to shop for the clothing and style in the size I needed. If I couldn’t find the clothing I needed out there, then I would do it myself.” In 2009, Stefanie launched a website where women could purchase fashionable clothing. This was followed by a Yonge Street boutique in 2011.

“It seems like the fashion industry virtually ignores this segment,” says Stefanie, “the curvy woman needs options and wants to feel confident and sexy, just like her slimmer counterpart.” This is where the fashion industry has failed. In the past, clothing was always big and baggy, something a woman would put on to hide her body. But what this community has been asking for is the same clothing as everyone else, just in a bigger size. This is exactly what Stefanie provides for her customers,

After working as a freelance model, she joined the Ben Barry Agency in 2009 and has been working steadily ever since. Although Toronto is a huge city in the fashion industry, Melissa wishes there were more opportunities for curvy models. To be considered a plus size

need for plus size fashion, others had to create their own looks. One of these women is Pam Shainhouse, founder of clothing line Allistyle Inc. Pam’s daughter, Alli, had had a hard time finding stylish clothing after she experienced a weight gain while suffering from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In 2006, Alli passed away and Pam created a line of plus size clothing that does not try to hide or cover a woman’s curves but rather hug them to

create a gorgeous silhouette. Pam says, “there should not be differences outside of sizing in plus size versus mainstream sizes. Everyone needs to love who they are, and the clothing will augment their inside feelings. We love to show a beautiful curvy woman wearing clothes that they shine in, with Allistyle, they can do just that.” Allistyle Inc. was the first plus size clothing line to be featured in Toronto’s fashion week, an experience Pam describes as, “terrifying, but definitely well worth it.” Pam says, “I am just thrilled that we had the foresight to be the first to show the fashion community that women of all sizes are beautiful.”

Allistyle’s appearance at Fashion Week garnered tons of attention not just from the curvy community but from everyone.

The media raved about how refreshing it was to finally see beautiful curvy models strut the runway. This oustanding show created a bold statement and made a mark in the Canadian fashion industry that fashion should cater to women of all shapes and sizes.

model, a woman must be between a size 12 and 16. “In some instances models larger than a size 16 are used,” says Melissa, “but the busiest plus models in the industry are between a size 12 and 16.” Melissa had some reservations before becoming a model. She felt like she would be judged. She says she has had her share of negative comments but the positive ones outweigh the negative ones. “When I get messages from women telling me how I inspire them, it gives me goosebumps, and makes it all worth it.” says Melissa, “the best part of this job, besides wearing beautiful clothes, is meeting all the powerful, confident, beautiful women that represent a large majority of women.” Plus size women want to see more models like Melissa who represent them. But what about the clothes these models wear? Where do these clothing lines come from?

Most of the mainstream clothing stores we see in malls do not carry over size 12. So just like Stefanie who had to open her own boutique to satisfy a

hiring models who look like her. Curvy fashion bloggers have helped lead this change, showing that fashion is sizeless and a form of communication and self-expression for all.” Fashion lines have been listening to these bloggers and consumers. Ben’s agency has sent models to clothing stores like The Gap, Sears, and The Bay. Ben says there is a link between using models who look like consumers and the increase in sales, “women are over 200 percent more likely to buy clothes when fashion advertisements feature models who reflect their body shape.” With stores finally realizing they must cater to their plus size clientele and with more and more plus size boutiques opening, there has to be a bigger demand for plus size models.

Liis Windischmann has been a plus size model for almost 20 years. She is also the director of the Ben Barry Agency. She says there were very few curvy models making a full time living of modeling when she first started but she is happy to say that there are now many who are making careers for themselves.

She too, credits social media for the attention this market has received over the last couple of years, “the expansion of social media allows customers to be heard in a public forum. There was more online attention given to curvy fashion and thus a quicker way to reach consumers was established and therefore more images started to be created.” In fact, it wasn’t just in the online community that these images began to appear. Liis remembers one magazine image that had a huge impact in the plus size community: “when Glamour Magazine ran the photo of curvy model Lizzie Miller known as, “the girl on page 194,” in its September 2009 issue showing off a curvy belly and it went viral, it created a huge ripple effect bringing plus size models into more fashion magazines, opening up more modeling opportunities. It was a huge break in the fashion world in that the public responded loudly and favourably to seeing more diversity in fashion pages.” So we ask, if this image of Lizzie

Tracy Broxterman is the multi-talented brains behind popular indie brand Domino Dollhouse. Since Tracy started the label in late 2010, she’s been cranking out marvelous designs and thoroughly winning the hearts of adventurous plus size fatshionistas worldwide. I met Tracy when I had the honour of walking for Domino Dollhouse in a fashion show a couple years back. Read on and find out why Tracy is one of the most important figures in plus size fashion today.

E: Can you tell me about how you started Domino Dollhouse?

T: I started Domino Dollhouse after being let go from the corset shop due to the economy... it was sort of a crossroads moment for me. I could either look for a new career or strike out on my own.

E: What is your most popular item to date, and why do you think that is the case?

T: I think the Babydoll Dress in Galaxy has technically been the best seller, but I STILL get requests for the Berry Beautiful Dress (the strawberry dress). It may be the most coveted among the dolls. I think they appeal to many different types of woman of different ages and body types. The styles are flexible in sizing, but without being shapeless. They are also both bold and quirky---just like my dolls!

E: Domino Dollhouse works with some seriously drop dead gorgeous babes. What is your process for finding models?

T: For each collection, I tend to have a vibe or look that I want to go for and that weighs HEAVILY in who we select. We also, of course, need local So-Cal models so we have complete control of the shoot. Personality is also a huge factor. We like a fun, supportive set and using positive and professional models is essential.

Erin: You’re an Ohio girl like me, so I certainly understand the motivation to take a hands-on approach to fashion. Tell me about what got you interested in pursuing a career in fashion.

Tracy: I’ve been interested in clothing for as long as I can remember, but have had a struggle finding it in my size for almost as long. I went to the University of Cincinnati for marketing/ fashion merchandising and had planned on working as a buyer or opening up my own store. After school, I ended up getting hired to work at a custom corsetry company, Versatile Fashions. That is where I learned about both manufacturing and running a small business.

E: What is your fave type of clothing to design?

T: I LOVE dresses! I actually find them easier to wear than mixing up pieces. But honestly, I love designing all elements of dressing.

E: Domino Dollhouse clothing has a specific vibe.

It definitely appeals to those who love to have fun with fashion and aren’t afraid to take risks. Can you tell me about Domino Dollhouse’s branding?

T: I’ve always been obsessed with alternative fashion brands/shops, but I’ve never been able to find exactly what I wanted in my size. I wanted to create unique clothing from a perspective of someone who grew up in counterculture and understood the difference between fashion and a costume. You can’t just pop a skull or cherries on something and expect it to translate to a “youth” or “alternative” market.

E: Do you think branding and social media presence really translate to sales?

T: Social media and branding help so much.

The power of an exceptional photo online is unparalleled. I’m so lucky to have an amazing crew of people who help bring that to life.

E: What are the future plans for DD? T: I’m definitely focusing more on our own

line and creating more special pieces. More collections, more often! Someday, I’d love to have a showroom for people to visit. You cannot replace how amazing it feels to walk into a fat positive store. I relish the time I’ve spent in places like Re/ Dress or Fat Fancy and would love to cultivate something like that in LA. E: I love your blog, Chubble Bubble. You have amazing personal style. What informs your sense of style, and who are some of your fashion icons?

T: Aw, thank you! Music and musicians have always been my biggest influences, I have to say. I also love looking at blogs and street fashion alongside designer pieces. I love Daphne Guinness, Beth Ditto, Rachel Brice, Grimes, and Brooke Candy. For my own aesthetic, I get inspired by designers Alexander McQueen, Jeremy Scott, Rick Owens, and Gareth Pugh.

E: What do you do for fun in your free time? Do you even have free time? Tell us a bit about life outside of Domino Dollhouse!

T: Honestly, I’m constantly shopping, which is part of why I love what I do so much! Chalk it up to research! I also like to go dancing, take in a drag show, and watch a LOT of embarrassing TV.

Tracy was sweet enough to share some photos of Domino Dollhouse’s Spring 2013 line with us, and they are FIERCE! I appreciate that she keeps getting riskier and more edgy with the line. There seems to be a trend towards getting plus size fashion on track with straight size fashion as of late and I sincerely hope this continues. All bodies are legitimate and deserving of good quality, stylish clothing no matter their size.
