Hammer time ■ Words: Lesley Wright Pics: Jerry Cookson A huge thank you to all those who supported the BDRHoF auction at Dragstalgia. It was very well received by all participants, with friends up-bidding each other on the spot and others putting in some very generous bids to secure the items they wanted. It was a pleasure for us to bring to the Santa Pod audience some rare and autographed items, which are now the treasured possessions of the auction winners. I would personally like to thank those who donated: Paul Whitehouse; Lynn at US Automotive; Steven Bishop; Paul Harris; Phil Cottingham; Tommy Ivo; Ron Hope; Don Prudhomme; NHRA Motorsport Museum and SO-CAL Speed Shop. Thanks also to Tony Thacker for collecting items from the US and US

NEXT NEX XT MONTH Automotive for shipping them over. We were offered donations of further items for auction during the weekend so have already started the collection for what we hope will become an annual event for us. Please contact me if you have any items you would like to donate. Thanks also to the BDRHoF team who ran the auction and sales: Phil and Angie Cottingham; Robin Jackson; Ian Hart; Graham and Carolyne Beckwith; Syd MacDonald; Bev Bradbury; Ian Messenger and Jerry Cookson. Ed and shoulders I don’t know about you guys, but I feel like we’ve turned a corner, and a bloody sharp one at that. Maybe even a hairpin bend. I’m referring to the 30th Hot Rod Supernationals, the largest rod run to be staged in the UK for two years. You can read all about it on p18 but, as we can’t fit in everything, I thought it worthy of mention here. Whilst it wasn’t the biggest, nor the most diverse, it was probably one of the most significant Supernats ever. Sure, there were no Europeans in attendance and numbers were limited, but it happened. Those who were there surely felt a great weight lifted off their shoulders. We were out and about once again, four days of mixing, mingling and talking bullshit. What more could anyone ask for? Having been on the other side of the fence, I thought I knew the pressures involved in organising an event of this magnitude. Now I’m not so sure. This was a one-of-a-kind situation in never before seen circumstances, and

Love this… The latest entry into Street Elim inator is Elliot Day in this 350 Chevy-powered ’33 Willys. What blew us away is the fact Elliot is just 16 years old so, while he has a race licence, he doesn’t have a driving licence! Dad, Dave, therefore has to driv e the car on the mandatory cruise, but on trac k it’s all Elliot’s work. At his first ever race meet, he clocked a best of 9.008 seconds at 154.72mph, so there’s almost certainly an eight in this youngster’s very bright future. Great job Elliot.

hopefully one that will never be experienced again. So, next time you bump into one of the NSRA committee, or helpers, at the bar, make sure you stand them a drink. They really do deserve it. Dave Biggadyke

Walnut wheel Looking for a wood rim steering wheel for your whip? We came across these from Heritage Parts Centre the other day and were impressed by the quality, y, the thin mahogany rim with no rivets and their likeness to the Speedwell wheels of the ’70s. They’re 15-inch diameter, have a fourrinch dish, a brushed ali finish to the spokes and the standard three-bolt fixing, ing, which means they can be made to fit pretty much anything via either one off the steering boss kits the company sells ls or a Grant adapter. They cost £128.65 from www.heritagepartscentre.com

In memory of Colin Casey y

Words by Bob Wilding My best friend of over 30 years, Colin Casey, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday 1 August following a long illness. He was a very popular guy in the hot rod and American car community, and also within the local birding scene. Colin was well known in Lincolnshire as the person who started motor factor group LINCO in the 1980s. More recently, he was one of the authors of the Lincolnshire Bird Club publication, Birds of Lincolnshire. Charitable work was another of Colin’s passions, which he actively continued with despite the onset of his illness. Colin was a generous and sincere bloke who will leave a very big hole in our family’s lives. RIP bud, see you on the other side.

Pod ccast cas asst a ast st The latest happenings at the home of UK drag racing - Santa Pod Drag racing fetched up on Britain’s shores in the 1960s and it only took a couple more decades for folks to get nostalgic for those not-so-distant times. The manifestation of this keening for the days of déja vu was a race meeting called the Hot Rod Drags, held on the Long Marston track, latterly known as Shakespeare County Raceway. When Shakey went the way of all flesh, Santa Pod took on the show, and in 2018 the Hot Rod Drags became the vibrant, late-season complement to July’s blockbuster Dragstalgia weekend. If you came to Dragstalgia, and long for more in the same retro vein, or if you didn’t come to Dragstalgia and wish you had, you’re in luck. The 33rd Original Hot Rod Drags, supported by the National Street Rod Association, blossoms on to the drag strip from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is the event’s winning formula, borne out by the splendid array of ‘old iron’ parked around the paddock or pounding up the track. Happen to have a pre-1973 battle wagon resting away at the back of the garage? Then get it out and bring it along. Sign on for £35 per day and RWYB will give you the run of the drag strip. Retros, classics, hot rods and Yanks are all welcome. But watch out! You’ll be sharing the weekend with some serious metalwork, too. Invited classes include Outlaw Anglia, Gasser Circus, Supercharged Outlaws and Wild Bunch – never a dull moment when any of those are on the loose, and the noisiest of them will contribute to a Cacklefest, too. Lighting up, and smoking out, the place will be Julian Webb and his Split Second jet dragster, giving the Saturday evening fireworks display a run for its money, while the NSRA hands out its Dirty Dozen awards to the cars considered most to represent the spirit of the event. Add the Nostalgia Trade Village, live music, funfair rides and even an hourly bus service to Rushden Lakes if you fancy a shopping spree, or a trip to the flicks, and you have an autumn weekend to remember. Visit www.santapod. co.uk/hot-rod-drags.php for the full deal. See you there

Even more pressing issues Dear CC, regarding the ongoing National Drag Racer / Drag Racer magazine correspondence in the September issue, I do have a copy of the pictorial Drag Racer Colour Action. I don’t know when this was issued but my recollection is that it was after the final, 44th, edition of the magazine. I seem to remember this was as some recompense to subscribers for the demise of the magazine. However, that was many years ago and my memory might be incorrect. The inner pages of Colour Action do not give a publishing date, and I have looked

More Zs Dear CC, further to the ‘Zs not dead, baby’ letter in the September issue, I own two old feature cars built by Nick Arlett, who is a good friend of mine. One is the ’55 Zodiac (pictured here with the builder) I watched being built in the street by Nick in the very early ’80s, the other is the ’55 Standard Vanguard estate featured in your August ’06 issue. The latest addition to my collection is the Rob Rashbrook-built, Farnhamesque Ford Prefect estate. That was another of your cover cars, this time in the August ’12 issue. Len Lucas, via email

> Wow Len, that’s an impressive line up of hot rodded British tin. Thanks for sharing it with us. Just one question, how do you decide which set of keys to pick up each day? Ed.

through the later editions of the magazine for clues but have found none. I have all of the issues of the magazine except the fourth, which I have searched for without success. Graham Thompson, via emaill Dear CC, with regards to the National Drag Racer pictorial, I have a copy of that, plus a second with four pages missing! There was only one such issue, with most of the photos cribbed from the magazine, but without text blown over them. Jeremy Cookson, via email

> I guess that puts the history of National Drag Racer to bed now. All that’s needed now is for me to source the issues I don’t have to complete my collection. Plus the Colour Action pictorial, of course. Good luck with your quest for a copy of issue four Graham. Ed.

More T Dear CC, as there’s been a fair bit of talk about Jagos of late I thought I’d let you know about the Model T I’m currently restoring. The car made its debut in 1972, as pictured here, but has changed quite a lot since then. Now I am retired, I have the spare time to finish the project. Being a good friend of Ian Austin [Brewing T on p24 - Ed] is also a bonus as he has helped me with obtaining parts as the hot rod scene here in North Wales is not as active as it is in England. Power comes from a 3.0-litre Ford Essex V6 mated to a four-speed manual ’box, and the paint is now a black base topped off in high glaze lacquer with rainbow holographic flake. Neil Gavin, via email

> Thanks for getting in touch Neil, it’s amazing how many old Jago builds are reappearing these days. Keep up the good work on the project, and don’t forget to keep us updated with your progress. Ed.

More Zs contd. Dear CC, I am writing with regard to your piece in the September issue Mailbox on the Zephyr recently purchased by Dave Hunt. I was married to the previous owner and had done a lot of work on it before our divorce. Attached is a shot of the car at a show many years ago. Mike Vinton, via email Dear CC, I owned the Zephyr, registration number OAM 260, in the ’80s. Twice. Terry Peters, via Messenger

> Thanks guys. Although not exactly overflowing with information, your correspondences add a bit more to the Zephyr’s history. Can anyone else fill in any more? Ed.

OCTOBER 2021 CUSTOM CAR 9

Think Big part 3

The body now done, it’s time to look at some of the parts needed to turn project Big-T into a roller n Words and pics: Bo Bertilsson hile we were waiting for more parts to arrive from the USA, we decided to get on with some of the more mundane jobs that turn a rolling chassis into a driveable car. The pedals, along with the master cylinder for the brakes, had to be installed, and things all get a bit tight in a Model T with a manual transmission as you have three pedals to find space for, in amongst the gearbox and steering box. To satisfy Swedish regulations, the car must use a new dual master cylinder, so we chose a readily available one, the same as is used on Volvo 740s, and many other cars here.

W

 The pedals we used came from a Pete & Jakes Model A kit, but had to be modified a little bit to fit as there’s so little room in a Model T. To give us enough room for three pedals, the clutch pedal now kicks out over the frame a bit but will obviously still sit inside the body.

 Swedish di h road d traffic ffi law says we must use a new dual master cylinder with level sensor, so we chose this compact unit that is used on Volvo 740s. We’ll have to add a little LED brake fluid level warning light on the dash to make the inspection guys happy, but that’s no big deal.

g  For the 1940 Ford part, shortened, an adjustable, rose-jointed linkage and made a bracket that bolted under the frame.

g bits of the Big-T - is the front spring bracket cover, so we had to replicate that. You can do a lot with cardboard and tape, and so we knocked up a quick cover to check we were happy with the look. You can also see the old Hurst front engine mount in this pic that will eventuall y hold the motor in place.

10 CUSTOM CAR OCTOBER 2021

° We then transferred the card template to sheet metal and made a start on the cover. A second part will be made that goes from the front of the frame up to the grille shell, which will make it look like it is one piece, even though it won’t be so the bracket cover can be removed if needed.

° A cover for the transmission was needed, too. Those thicker gauge support pieces around the pedals and steering column were laser cut for us to our dimensions.

© If you look at the opening picture this month you can see just how high the original 1923 windscreen is. After carefully measuring the windscreen on our Big-T reference model, we scaled that up and worked out we needed to remove two inches from our windscreen posts. Because of the shape of the tubes, we deemed it easier to cut one inch out of two places on each post, as indicated on the un-cut one behind.

To get a comfortable driving position, the pedals were mounted in front of the steering box, while the bracket for the master cylinder sits behind, with the cylinder and reservoir mounted beneath the floor. For the clutch mechanism, we used an original 1940 Ford set up that was shortened to fit between the engineto-transmission adapter and the Ford bracket bolted to the frame. With all this in place, we could make up the brake lines in copper tube.

A major part of the look of the car is the rear axle ° Another job to do was replicate the original Big-T dash. The Model T dashboard is not very big at all, but we had to fit a full set of Stewart Warner gauges in there, just like the original. Out came the hole saws. ¿ It felt like Christmas the day the package arrived from Hot Rod Works in Ohio, USA. The fully polished Rodsville quickchange centre section is like a piece of jewellery, and was all ready for us to put together. Exciting stuff.

Incidentally, the line to the rear end goes goe along the torque tube to a t-piece on the centre section and splits there out to the rear brakes. A major part of the look of the car is the rear axle, and we’re using a Rodsville quickchange housing from Rod Hot Rod Works in Ohio, together with p a pair of ’37 Ford bells, and a split ’36 Ford For wishbone to locate it.

OCTOBER 2021 CUSTOM CAR 11

Let Tardel help you, f you’re doing anything with early Ford banjo or quickchange rear ends, we highly recommend checking out Vern Tardel’s series of ‘Let me help you’ books. We had copies of the Banjo Axle Quickchange assembly guide and Ford 1932-’48 Banjo-differential servicing and rebuilding guide, both of which proved invaluable in putting our Rodsville rear end together. To be sure we’d done everything correctly, after assembly we followed the procedure for checking the ‘set’ on the rear end gears with paint, noting that the witness marks on the ring gear should be in the middle of the teeth, and made sure we had the right combination of gaskets at the bells to achieve the appropriate clearance at the big gear set. Thanks Vern!

I

©° New bearings were pressed on… u …and the diff gears lubed and assembled.

When word arrived that our rear end package had arrived from the States, we were straight over to pick it up. The polished centre section looks amazing, and it came with a new pinion and 3.25 gear set. With a set of 25 / 23 gears, that

red steel wheels and whitewall tyres, as per the original Big-T box art will give us a final drive of 3.45:1 or 4.11:1 with the cogs flipped. With the 283ci Chevy and the diameter of the rear tyres we've chosen, we figure that would be a good combination.

12 CUSTOM CAR OCTOBER 2021

° With the original ’37 bells painted black and the gusseted Model A spring hangers in place, the rear end is starting to look real nice.

When it was all assembled, with the Model A spring installed, along with the split wishbone and the torque tube, the whole rear end was bolted into the chassis. With that, we could bolt on our red steel wheels and whitewall tyres, as per the original Big-T box art, and really start to see what it is all going to look like.

° Brake lines were made in 3/16-inch copper tube as it is easy to bend and put flares in. Take your time and try to only make bends in the tubes once as copper quickly work hardens.

° A good brake line tool that can do more than one style end is an invaluable workshop tool.

¿ A good safety tip when you use older Ford drum brakes is to fit Tardel brake drum retainers. They’re nothing very clever, but they’ll keep the drums (and the wheels) on the car should you ever break a rear axle. And take it from us, early Ford rear axles do break.

There were still a few important parts we wanted to get the right look for the car. At the front, we needed a cover for the spring bracket, and the original ’22’25 T grille shell we bought had to sit just right in the chassis. In fairness, a repro part might have been better here as they have flat sides, whereas the originals have a more tapered shape that follows the engine side panels. We aren’t using any of those though. Just as we got that sorted, some more parts turned up, this time from England. We had planned all along to use a threecarb manifold, just like the real Big-T, and had a trio of carburettors on the shelf

° Another small metalworking job was to make these support pieces that help mount the shortened Model A pick-up bed to the body. It is also bolted securely to the frame of course. © Final job for this month was to sort out the intake on the engine. We had the manifold, and we had the carbs, but Str Stromberg in the UK came up trumps with the linkage we needed. It’s easy to adjust for when you want the secondary carbs to open, so we set it about 60% on the cen centre carb before it opens the other two. We We’ll see how that works when we get to ro road test the car.

the original '22-'25 grille shell had to sit just right in the chassis that we’d already rebuilt, along with an Offenhauser manifold. What was missing was a linkage, and Stromberg in the UK (www.stromberg-97.com) had just what we needed. It was easy to install, and adjust, so we put that together, as well as assembling the ’39 transmission with Lincoln gears, while our engine builder was getting the short block ready. Things were progressing nicely. Next month, we’ll move on to the interior, as well as start prepping things for colour and polish. CC

¿ Al Also included in the deliv delivery from Stromberg were some of the company’s new Superseat hose fittings, which are a much better design than the old type.

In part four next month, we make the chassis a roller and fit the Big-T body… OCTOBER 2021 CUSTOM CAR 13

Sand flies After a two-year absence, it was back to Wales for the eighth running of the fastest beach races on earth n Words: Mike Pye Pics: John Isaac @squiresurf or the first time since it started, due to an exceedingly annoying clash between the Hot Rod Races at Pendine, Dragstalgia at Santa Pod and the Goodwood Festival of Speed, I had to make a choice as to which to attend. Dragstalgia won, so I will use this opportunity to thank Neil Fretwell of the Vintage Hot Rod Association (VHRA) for his invaluable assistance with this year’s report. It won’t have escaped your notice that, by and large, every event on the 2020 calendar was cancelled but, due to Covid, the beach races had to be re-scheduled twice before the event could go ahead, so massive credit to all those who made it happen in July this year, despite all the additional bureaucracy involved. Combine Covid with new laws invoked in the wake of Brexit, and that kept the European and Scandinavian racers away this year, which sadly may be the case with a lot of events from here on in. On the upside, the fickle British summer blessed the Carmarthenshire beach with glorious sun for at least part of the Saturday, but then changed its mind and brought proceedings to a premature close on Sunday. So, what did all this do for racing conditions? Well, mixed would probably be the best word or, as veteran campaigner, David Sollis, put it, “Saturday

 Dave Sturgess had his V8F/R roadster on a rolling road prior to Pendine and finally squeezed 101.86mph out of it to bag his 100mph club t-shirt.

 Pete Ayres has been busy a blower off season revamping his T Modified, n four hed-o breat ly heavi its from ting now sprou V4/M banger. A 95.73mph first run upped the again class record, but he then bumped that with a 97.45mph pass on the Sunday.

was good until the sand dried out, Sunday was dreadful because the sand was too wet.” That’s racing on a beach for you. For the drivers of the 120 race cars that signed on, that meant good, firming conditions on the Saturday morning, allowing everyone two runs, but deteriorating sand after that, and the approaching tide, meant the organisers had to call it a day after just 40 cars ran through for a third pass. Sunday started damp and, after a brief respite where a few cars were able to make a run, the rain continued on and off until the on was more than the off and

 ‘Secret’ Steve Hill said he hadn’t touched his car in over 12 months, but Ben Rushforth at EDA had been busy putting together a high winding small block Chevy for it as he badly wanted to win tthis year. The decision paid off with a 121.06 first pass and a winning 121.96 on Sunday morning. Congratulations Steve, King of the Beach 2021. For reference, 2019 King of the Beach was Marcus Bennett at 121.70mph, which further adds to our theory that these cars are reaching terminal velocity on sand.

 Following Gavin Meanley’s lead, Jon Foster removed the bed from his Zetec-powered RPU, allowing him to switch class from L4/R, where he already holds the record at 106.24mph, to L4/M, upping that class record to 93.28mph.

the event was called to a halt ahead of schedule. Such a shame for all those that had worked so hard on their cars and then made the long journey to Wales, but it’s a known risk every year and the event has had more hits than misses over the year. We’ve no doubt everyone that took part will be back with renewed enthusiasm at the next running of the fastest beach races on earth. CC

Non-stop This year’s cruise, once again organised by Dave and Lesley Brown, came with a twist as it didn’t actually go anywhere. The reality was it worked a lot better than it may have sounded on paper and all those who took part enjoyed the jaunt around the Bedfordshire countryside. The circuit clocked up a touch over 30 miles and, with two opposing routes, cruisers met each other coming the other way along the way. Nice one.

Brewing T ■ Words and pics: Ian Austin ’m not a patient person, but I try to tell myself delays are part of life, even though they drive me nuts. Taking that on board, I bought two new Galaxy tyres from them and, when they fitted them, it was easy to see the beads on the Cooper tyres had been broken, so I bought a pair of new tyres for the front, too.

° …but not so when it was removed from the wheel for replacement.

A valuable lesson learnt – safety and quality before budget. My personal thanks go to John and his team for their expertise and help. CC

Double Scramble Words and pics: Bob Roberts Like many venues, Bicester Heritage had not hosted an event since early 2020. Many have been proposed and then cancelled or postponed as the various stages of lockdown applied. But by April this year it was announced with reasonable confidence that, come June, it could be done, and the pent-up demand was such that the decision was made to make this the first two-day Scramble.

this was the first two-day Scramble Not only did it run, but the weather was kind too, and the result was the usual eclectic selection of modified and classic cars, including several we spotted with recently fitted electric powertrains. Decency prevents me from showing any of these. Star for me was a gloss black ’32 roadster, which was parked next to an SS Jaguar, making it interesting to note the similarities between the two. some of his incredible collection of exotic and race cars Entry was by pre-booked ticket only, although a fortunate few were able to turn up and pay on the gate. A few car clubs also came along to display just outside the gardens, although they were more of the classic variety, rather than rods and customs. Oh well, there’s always next year to put that right. The day was thoroughly enjoyable, and I highly recommend anyone in the area to put it on the calendar for next year. CC

what I really wanted was a 1933 or ’34 Ford 3-window coupe i

The good stuff I remember speaking to Adrian and his partner, Heather, and coming away not entirely sure whether the car was for sale or not. Adrian assures me it wasn’t for sale at the time though: “I built it for myself. It had all my good parts on it, and was a car

t

The build

 If you were to write a list of the ideal parts for an A-V8 roadster, with the possible exception of a quickchange back axle, they’re pretty much all here. Note the ’32 chassis is stock dimensions, not pinched to suit the A body and not z’d for lowering. The only real mods are Model A front and rear crossmembers

 First to be painted was the chassis, in the same Midnight Blue as the car. Note the total lack of chrome, and simplicity of construction. Even the wishbones front and rear, albeit from different years, have been kept whole, meaning the suspension still works in the way Henry intended.

 It’ It’s an original i i lH Henry FFord db body, d and was a pretty good one to start with, but it still needed a fair of amount of metalwork. Here Adrian has made new floors, sub rails and a cover for the rear crossmember.

B Bonnett sides id and d a new ttop were made from scratch too, with three sets of stepped louvres each side. They’re held in place with Dzus fasteners, and the one-piece top located with toolbox latches.

 Adrian made his own stainless tubular headers for the Flathead. In fact, the whole system from front to rear, though curiously omitted to include any silencers in the spec…

 Jay Bradley at Jay’s Auto Body Works does all the paint for Buckland Automotive, and he’s made a fine job of his part of the process again here.

 Another angle of the freshly painted body sitting on the built up rolling chassis. It looks like a car again now, but there’s still a long way to go, even at this stage.

 One of our favourite details on the car are the tail lights. At first glance they might appear to be the popular ’41-’48 Chevy lamps, just mounted vertically, but they’re actually from a 1947 Kaiser. They’re still mounted vertically though. Discreet twice pipes have just enough detail in their rolled ends to look properly finished.

or even just the choice of wheels and tyres, can change the period of the car dramatically. Wires put it in the ’40s, steels in the ’50s and mags and a more nose-down disposition put it in the ’60s, roughly speaking, though obviously there is some overlap between those eras.

Wheels are 16 x 4-inch ’40’s Ford steels all round, wrapped in 6.00-16 and 7.00-16 Firestone Deluxe Champion blackwalls. V8 hubcaps are the perfect finishing touch.

Looks about fashion

36 CUSTOM CAR OCTOBER 2021

 Adrian is particularly proud of the ’screen posts. They’re a combination of ’31 tops on modified ’29 bottoms, and allow the ’screen to be angled back two inches when the hood is removed.

It says 1947 on the number plate, so that’s clearly where Adrian sees it sitting, which

suited Dominique to a tee, as she has a penchant for the fashions and styles of that and the following decade. And so back to how come she came to own it, when she wanted a later model coupe. You know, one with a lid. Using a bit of artistic licence, you could say it’s all down to the seat, or at least the eBay-sourced heating elements integrated into the seat during its construction. “Oh, that’s not really true,” says

 Here’s ’ the h car mocked k d up iin b bare metal, l with an original hood frame in place to better gauge the overall look. It’s on mismatched wheels here just to ensure it all sits right before it comes apart for paint. A ’29 body on a ’32 chassis is just a great look for an early style traditional hot rod.  The 255ci engine is the French Flathead out of Adrian Smith’s Buckland Special. It benefits from an Isky 400 Jr cam, Offenhauser ali heads and two carb intake, dual Stromberg 97s, a Powergen alternator disguised as a dynamo and some nifty brass hose clamps that Adrian only recalls costing £15 each! In Adrian’s car, this engine pushed him to 104mph on the sand at Pendine.

 The stainless steel hood frame is another Adrian special, knocked up in double quick time in order to meet the deadline for the car going off to trim. Those lovely wooden hood bows and header are by Ian Whittaker.

Dominique with a smile when I suggest just that. Hey, it all adds to the story, right? “Adrian actually posted when he was at the Motorama that the car was for sale. I saw the pictures and really liked it, so I message ed him asking how much it was. He nding me more pictures.

“I took it only for a small test drive, but it was just so nice, so I put a deposit, and then my mum and her boyfriend had a look at it. I think I was hoping they would talk me out of it as I was also thinking I could use this money to pay off a bit of my mortgage, or at least do something more sensible with it. “But they told me if I like it, I should buy it. Well, sometimes you have to treat yourself, don’t you?” “The other reason I sold it so soon after finishing it was a ’36 Ford Cabriolet came up for sale,” interjects Adrian, “and that’s in a different league, isn’tt it? I couldn’tt pass that opportunity up, and the plan

An early A roadster on a ’32 chassis makes for a great profile. The jury is split on the use of a ’32 grille shell with the earlier body style, some feeling it is more suited to the ’30 / ’31 body shape, and that the ’28 / ’29 grille shell is a prettier piece. Horses for courses though, right?

was to tour Europe in it, though obviously that’s all had to go on hold for a while.”

Garage envy So, shortly after that show, the car changed hands, but only moved a few miles down the road in the process. The poor old Hillman – which Dominique says has been the most reliable car, new or old, she’s ever owned – was kicked out of the garage onto the drive and the roadster took its place.  There’s not a lot to a roadster interior, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be luxuriously trimmed. Richard at the eponymous Richard James Upholstery in Gloucestershire (richardjamesupholstery.com) can take the credit for the wonderful combination of distressed leather and square weave carpets, as well as turning Adrian’s piece of plywood into a comfortable, heated(!) seat. Details include a ’40 Deluxe steering wheel on a Buckland column and a Stewart Warner rev countter.

“I was so excited to have it, for a while it was my daily driver. I’d go shopping in it, and go to my scuba diving lessons, or just down to the pub to meet friends. I just loved driving it.” Sure, it didn’t prove to be quite as reliable as the old Minx, but that’s no

sometimes you have to treat yourself, don’t you? slight on Adrian’s workmanship. It’s just an old car, with old parts, and some not so old that aren’t perhaps as good as they should be. “I think I went through three distributors in the first year, and I had to be recovered from the Rockabilly Rave,

 Close up of the front end shows just how many original Ford components have been used in this car’s construction. Only those tubular upper steering arms and the reversed eye spring give the hot rodding game away here. The axle is an original 1940 piece dropped by Mor-Drop, a blacksmithing company in Oakland, California that opened in the ’50s and was still dropping axles up until about 2012, when then owner, Marty Costello, died. They’re generally only about 2½ to three-inch drop, which is less than modern dropped axles, but for a period car they’re hard to beat.

 Adrian will no doubt be horror struck to he ar Dominique say sh prefers the look of the he ’36 Ford dash in a frie nd’s Model A to the handmade gauge pod he knocked up for her car ! Its angled nature allows the original fuel gauge to still be operational but gives room behind for the coll ection of additional Stewart Warner gauges .

but I’ve also been to Prescott twice in it, and driven it up the hill there, which is always fun to do. “Obviously, last year we couldn’t do much, so I wasn’t able to take it to the beach races at Normandy, which I wanted to do. And this year the weather hasn’t been so great, but I still try to use it as much as I can.”

I always joke I never liked the early Model A body style Is there anywhere you’d still like to go in it, or anything you would change? I ask. “I’d like to take it up the strip at Santa Pod. Just to see how fast it goes. That’s something I would like to do this year. “But I’ve had some oil in the cylinders recently, so I’m hoping new rings will sort that out, but otherwise there’s nothing I’d really change, I don’t think.”

There followss a short pausse. “I do somettimes look at the [’36 Ford] dash in Harley [Peter’s] coupe, and then I look at mine. “I also always joke I never liked the early Model A body style, but apart from that it’s a great car, Adrian did a really nice job on it. “Oh, there is one thing. He made some window frames for it, and Richard [James] who did the trim has the material there waiting for me, but I’m always just so busy with work that I haven’t been able to find time to go to Gloucestershire to have them made. Maybe I’ll do that this winter.” Asked whether she prefers to drive the car with the top up or down, Dominique  When following such a well-trodden path it’s difficult to make a car like this stand out, but there are always places where subtle and thoughtful differences can be brought to bear. The style and position of louvres on the bonnet sides, the choice of latc , hey’ 39 / ’ 0 ever rm units all round, and those seven-inch lamps sit n a modified ’32 V8 h a

replies usually with the hood up up. “I like the look of it like that and also, when it’s down, I’m quite small so I can’t see much behind me. I don’t trust the English weather enough to take it off completely!”

Built for fun As to how the roadster compares to the Hillman, if at all, the response is considered: “The Hillman is more of a family car, more a comfort car, the roadster is more a fun car. “It’s a lot quicker, of course it is, and when you pull up to the traffic lights, you know, with the boy racers. I put my foot down and then I’m gone. Yes, it’s more fun for sure.” “My friends complain it is too loud, that you can’tt have a conversation when you’rre in it. Adrian did offer me some mufflers when I bought it, but it’s never had any and I like it like that. My friend .

© The 383 small block Chevy stroker motor, put together by Ian Tubb, is topped off with a Holley Brawler 650cfm carb and kicks out around 460bhp. Keeping it cool are the ali radiator and fans that Bryan picked up at the Long Beach swap meet. Transmission is a Tremec T56 six-speed.

Products steering box and tubular upper and lower arms, Wilwood brakes and a Winters Quick Change. Whoa, hold on a minute. A Quick Change under a big old Chevy? Surely you mean a Ford 9-inch Bryan?

I’ve some old shit in my yard group of mates were enjoying one of their regular trips to Bakersfield, California. The group got into conversation with Randy Winkle, the man behind Famoso Speed Shop, which lies just down the road from the Auto Club Famoso Raceway. Randy’s sales pitch wasn’t exactly polished: “Come over and take a look. I’ve some old shit in my yard.” Bryan’s response was more direct: “I’m not buying any shit, I’ve far too much work on already.” Even so, he had to take a look, didn’t he? Upon entering the yard, Bryan was confronted by the ’55. “I took a good look and it was a really solid car. At $3,500 it was too good to pass up. “We then spent the next few days filling the car with as many parts as we could lay

It will come as no surprise that no body filler was used in the making of this car, just a trace of lead where needed. Paint is a mix of Skoda Steel Grey and Toyota Hilux pick-up Super White. New green tinted glass is fitted all round.

our hands on, the bonus being it had no seats so there was plenty of room inside.”

Retirement plan With enough on his plate already, Bryan left the car just as it was for the next two or three years. “It was a typical Mexican fruit picker’s car,” Bryan expands. “Six cylinders, totally neglected, but with a really good body. I had it blasted and spent around four hours grinding and welding to sort out what minor issues there were. It really was that good, and I knew I was going to have to make it my retirement car.” As with all projects, a shopping list was drawn up. It was pretty much as expected really: small block Chevy, Tremec T56 manual transmission, Classic Performance

“No, it’s definitely a Quick Change, and a monster one at that. John Reid sourced it for me, but forgot the bloody brakes to go with it though.”

Twist away With the parts needed now in stock, Bryan could set about bolting them to the chassis rails. Er, not exactly. “I wanted a car you could throw round the track at Donington Park, not just run in a straight line. The real issue with Tri-Chevys is their inherent chassis twist, which gets really bad if you start pushing the car as the stock rails have very few crossmembers. “The Roadster Shop in Illinois supply purpose-built replacement frames that eliminate the problem, but they’re $20k. I had a good look at one and thought, I can do just the same to a stock chassis for 600 quid.”

Chances are you will never get another view of the stripes in the paintwork like this one, so make the most of it. It’s an unusual approach, but one that really works. What else would you expect from the master with the gun?

I wanted a car you could throw around the track at Donington Park ¿ As the ’55 was completely bare inside when he bought it, Bryan sourced the more upmarket ’57 Chevy Bel air interior here in the UK. He then ordered a trim kit based on ’59 Impala convertible cloth with vinyl edging from Ciadella Interiors and fitted it himself.

u Even with the relocated fuel tank, access to the Quick Change cover is still somewhat restricted.

OCTOBER 2021 CUSTOM CAR 47

© The kit Bryan bought comprised everything needed for the entire interior, including the door cards and even the carpets. The crossed flag emblems on the seat bases, repros of those found on early Corvette wings, are a perfect enhancement to the interior trim.

all I had to do then was decide on paint colours to complement it. I think I got that bit right.”

Not just show

We’re guessing it’s not quite as simple as Bryan makes it sound, but he set to and did it anyway. With the rolling chassis complete, Bryan’s attention switched to the Chevy’s body. Despite his many other talents, bodywork and paint are what Bryan is best known for.

y’know, the ones where most Yanks leave before us Brits get there – and I glimpsed a convertible as it was pulling out of the car park. “It happened so quick I couldn’t even tell what make of car it was, but the interior trimming was stunning, and just what I wanted in the ’55.

It's a good looking car, and it drives better than it looks “I knew people would have high expectations of the paint being something special, but I don’t think they anticipated the colour choice.” Asking what made him go for the grey and white, we weren’t at all surprised with the response: “There’s a story to that you know. We were at a breakfast meet at Donut Derelicts in Huntington Beach –

Pseudo knock-off Halibrands measure 16 inches in diameter, and five and 8½ inches in width, front and back respectively, shod with 205/50 and 235/60 Falken rubber.

“A while later, thinking about the interior for my car, I clicked on to the website of Arizona-based Ciadella Interiors (www.ciadellainteriors.com) and there was that same car. Turns out it was Gina Ciadella’s own car, and its interior is based on an original, one-year-only option for the ’59 Chevy Impala convertible. “That sorted out the inside nicely, so

Bryan’s mate, Darren, wired the car using what they refer to as a ‘Painful’ kit supplied by John Reid, whilst Bryan fitted an electric handbrake mounted off the rear crossmember, only to later find it was right where he wanted to mount a tow bar. A tow bar on car like this? I hear you ask. Yup. It may look pretty, but this is a car that has to earn its keep. Bryan built it to use, and that’s just what he is doing. The inevitable question came next then, so what’s it like to drive? “All I can say is it’s a good looking car, and it drives better than it looks. u Those who know Bryan will appreciate the significance of the Mister B graphic, a nod to his great pal, the late Roger Butterworth. Artwork is by the talented signwriter, Craig Ainge.

The one-piece bumpers, grille, headlight bezels and door handles are new. In fact, all the external trim was bought new, bar the stainless ’screen surrounds and side mouldings, which are refurbished originals.

And thanks to that sixth gear, it pulls 60mph at just 1,300rpm. “Mind you, the combination of the Quick Change and side exit exhausts makes it sound like there’s a Merlin engine under the bonnet, so this winter I’m going to have a new exhaust made for it with a pair of silencers that will fill the gaps in the chassis. I’m getting too old for all the noise now. “I could switch to helical gears in the rear end as they’re quieter than the

straight cut ones but I probably won’t. A bit like I’ll probably never change the gear ratio either as the current one it just right for the gearbox. “I need to fit seat belts, though, as that’s stopping me driving it really hard as I keep sliding around on the bench seat. That’s all though. “In saying that, my other ’55, the black one, now has an LS motor in it and that’s really nice… Then again, I am now heavily into getting my Fuel Altered built.” CC

Thanks Ian Tubb for the stroker motor and John Reid for all the parts

u CPP supplied the steering wheel and column, whilst the digital gauges housed in the dash binnacle are by VDO. The SO-CAL Speed Shop shifter has been chopped two inches, though Bryan says it ideally needs a bit more taken out of it. Note the cut out in the seat base, essential for the manual shifter to move as it is supposed to.

a great weekend's racing elimination rounds starting in earnest on the Friday. At least they did once the concrete had been dried following overnight rain, with the track opening mid-morning. Saturday saw no such malarkey, and a whole day’s racing, but Sunday’s early morning drizzle delayed proceedings slightly.

Dave Grady Super Gas The top three qualifiers in this 9.90-index class were Dave Fulton, 9.901 / 144.77, Simon Fulton, 9.903 / 146.73, and Andy Dibley, 9.905 / 147.18. Of those, only Dave Fulton progressed through the elimination rounds, though, breaking out in the semi-final with a 9.892 / 143.45, allowing Andrew Harrison through to the final with a 9.922 / 140.70. In the other semi, Bob Molden produced a 10.176 bye, before ramping it up to a 9.971 / 124.92 in the close-run final against Harrison, who edged it with a 9.998 / 132.07 pass. Andrew Harrison

Overall, it was a great weekend’s racing with some spectacular passes, notably amongst the Pro Modified ranks. Well done Santa Pod, well done race teams and well done spectators. You all did everyone proud. CC

Funny Car Cannonball Andy Raw in Nitro Bug won the Festival of Power Cannonball, his final pass of the weekend being a 5.763 / 192.11. Tony Betts, meanwhile, was piloting Venom, a totally new car following the incident at last year’s Not The Euro Finals, and produced a 5.535 / 202.50 and a 5.524 / 182.87 bye, whilst Steve Ashdown ran Undertaker to a best time of 6.495 seconds. Modurstang Pro ET Allan Schofield joined the ranks of Pro ET on the Friday after having spent 30 years racing at motorcycle circuits and the TT. Schofield’s best was an 8.812 / 151 break out. Round two of qualifying saw Tig Napier pull a huge wheelstand with his Dodge going almost vertical, folding the wheelie bars in the process and ending his weekend early. Qualifying produced a 32-car elimination field, headed up by Gary Carr, James Forster and Nick Mugridge, with all three progressing through the first elimination round. Come round three, though, all the top qualifiers had fallen by the wayside. The semi-finals saw Will Clark (9.80 index) run a 9.825 / 125.44 to see off Dave Cherrett, whilst Marc Huxley’s (10.15 index) 10.283 / 124.88 eliminated Leigh Morris. William Clark (9.82 index) then took the final with a 9.810 / 133.71 against Huxley’s (10.22 index) 10.121 / 131.28.

Running a Pro Mod-style Firebird, newly constructed by Robinson Race Cars, Jack Brewster progressed through to the third elimination round, whilst Mark Coulsell took the Perfect Light Award with a 0.0005 reaction time in qualifying. Phil Toppin broke out with a PB 8.637 / 155, and Dave Russell (8.70 index) put down a perfect ET in the Van With No Name, 8.700 / 159.59, to move into top spot, only to see Bob Doyle (8.71 index) nudge him off by a margin of 1/10,000th of a second with an 8.710 / 154.20. Laura Turburville (7.75 index) occupied third spot with a 7.752 / 170.42. Only Doyle survived the initial elimination bouts, but was then knocked out in round three. The penultimate round saw Tom Atkinson (8.94 index) 8.928 / 151.07 booking his ticket to the final as Barry Giles broke out by a greater margin, whilst Ron Bartlett ran an 8.268 / 165.99 bye. The final saw Bartlett (8.26 index) come out on top, his 8.284 / 157.36 too strong for Atkinson’s (8.92 index) 8.911 / 151.55.

Susanne Callin Antti Horto

In the first side-by-side Top Fuel race in the UK this year, Susanne Callin ran 4.563 / 171.73 to see off Antti Horto. The situation was reversed next time out, though, when Horto stormed through to a 4.040 / 217, overcoming the 4.205 / 206.64 from Callin. Both cars suffered tyre shake, with Horto’s car collecting some bodywork damage in the process and Callin then experiencing a safety system shut off, which deployed the ’chute after the burnout.

Jet cars Throughout the weekend, an assortment of jet cars not only put on some great displays, but ran some quick times, too. Of note was a 6.054 / 246.48 from Roger Goring in Firestorm, a 5.248 / 292.39 by Martin Hill in the Fireforce 5 jet dragster (the quickest and fastest quarter mile of the weekend), and a 5.728 / 209.18 by Julian Webb in the Split Second jet dragster. Martin Hill was also running the Fireforce 3 jet Funny Car, clocking a best of 6.064 at 232mph. Perry Watkins

Be Fast R Super Comp In the second round of qualifying, Paul Hudson bagged the Team Twister Perfect ET award with an 8.900 on the 8.90 class index. Steve Field broke out in the next round, but wasn’t too disappointed as he ran Black Pig Too to a PB 8.368 / 161.89, and then improved that further still in the final qualifying round with a mega break out 8.177 at 163.06mph. First round elimination wins went to Leah Kellett, Darryl Howells, Steven Hudson and Paul Hudson who was on a bye. Darryl Howells then defeated Paul Hudson, 9.133 / 142.94 to 8.890 / 157.41, while Kellett saw off Steven Hudson, 8.952 / 157.96 to 8.890 / 136.45. Track Worx Comp Eliminator During Elaine Hancock’s first burnout in Lethal Zephyr, the tyres gripped and the car hit the wall. It was a relatively low-speed impact and Elaine was unhurt, but the Zephyr needs work and was out of the running for the rest of the weekend. Meanwhile, Jordan Payne was running strong with a PB 7.409 / 183.50, bettered by a 7.374 / 184.35. The weekend saw the UK track debut for Spencer Tramm’s 350ci Camaro. Spencer quickly got used to the car, his qualifying times improving from a 12.249 / 115.31 to 11.166 / 115.92. Another PB was set by Kev Perkins, who ran an astounding 7.719 at 170.43mph. It was the Williams brothers who dominated qualifying, though, with Nic (11.55 index) on top with a 10.706 / 99.39, Dan (10.70 index) third with a 10.211 / 126.15 and Payne sandwiched between them. Payne, Tramm and both Williams brothers were victorious in the first elimination round, with Payne then dispensing with Tramm, despite the latter running a PB 11.020 / 117.12. The all Williams semi-final was settled when Nic fouled and Dan went through with a 10.212 / 127.32 on a 10.70 index. The final, however, went the way of Payne who ran 7.390 / 184.26 on a 9.4 index.

Motorsport UK Pro Modified On his second qualifying pass, Nick Davies ran a PB ET of 6.001, with a flying terminal speed of 243.72mph. Not content with that, though, he then dipped into the fives for the first time on his last qualifying run, a 5.973 / 242.55 securing him top rung on the ladder. Not be outdone, Wayne Nicholson produced his PB of 6.200 / 230.51 to bag himself second place, with Kev Slyfield third on 6.367 / 235.30. Davies was then on a bye in eliminations, as was Nicholson, who was on rare form, bettering his PB to a 6.145 / 230.21. Slyfield then dipped into the fives as well, equalling his best speed ET with a 5.943 / 238.71 flyer to defeat Jon Webster’s PB 6.327 / 235.30. Nicholson was then on a bye through to his first ever Pro Mod final, whilst Slyfield’s 6.048 / 226.66 was enough to see off the 6.100 / 242.77 from Davies. Unfortunately, Nicholson then saw red in the final, allowing Slyfield the win with a leisurely 8.414 / 111.66. Kev Slyfield

With Alan McSweeney failing to complete the cruise, Day then benefitted from a bye in the first elimination round. Wins also went the way of Anthony Higgs, Andy Bond, Nick Hale and Alan Williamson. Bond then went through on a bye, Williamson ran a winning 8.302 / 152.18 and, with Anthony Higgs pushed back, Day produced an amazing 9.008 / 154.72 bye. Day’s next run was 9.072 at 151.57mph, but that was no match for Bond's 7.963 / 145.77, whilst Williamson clocked 8.536 / 161.91 on a bye. A

fter a fight to the death over the last two episodes with the inlet manifold to rid ourselves of the dreaded swirl flaps, we hoped the cambelt replacement would be a bit easier – and to some extent it was, although I tackled this job hot on the heels of the manifold saga. With the airbox out and cambelt cover off, it made sense to plough-on and get it done. In most respects the Saab, Fiat and GM 1.9 and 2.0 diesel belt is a fairly simple one. Cambelt cover off, offside engine mounting out, auxiliary belt off and finally the lower alloy cover to expose everything. Even then they make it tricky – the lower belt cover will not come off unless the auxiliary belt tensioner is fully retracted and locked in place with a suitable pin. I used a small Allen key. I used a big pair of gas pliers to twist the tensioner clockwise and you don’t want your fingers anywhere near this thing!

New cambelt & water pump Do NOT try to do this job without a locking toolkit. They are less than £30 and essential. Also, whilst you must fit the belt with the direction arrows pointing forwards (so running clockwise), don’t get too hung-up on getting the white lines on some belts lined-up with the timing marks – it really doesn’t matter. Our new belt didn’t have them, some do. Always ensure the cam and crank pulleys are in position before slipping the old belt off.

Hints and tips As ever, patience is the key and a few tips you won’t find in the manuals. A trick I learned years ago was to press a bit of paper towel or similar into the gap between the cambelt and the lower timing cover when fitted to the crank sprocket – this presses the belt into the sprocket teeth and keeps it in position whilst you feed the belt around the rest of the

sprockets. It took me at least three goes to get the belt timing correct – the diesel pump isn’t ‘timed’ and can go on any way. All-in-all not a horrendous job, yet slightly frustrating… And the 13mm bolt and captive nut for the belt tensioner really doesn’t look like it’s up to the job – you can tell they were short of money when they designed that. Be aware that there are few belt run diagrams for the timing belt or the auxiliary belt so take plenty of photos and draw a detailed belt run diagram for each.

cam locking tools now need to be 9 The fitted. This engine has one of these Allen plugs fitted to each cam but most mechanics just seem to use the inlet one – this is because the cambelt only drives the inlet cam, the exhaust cam being driven off the inlet cam inside the engine itself.

1 CHECK COOLANT The engine coolant expansion tank can be checked by shining a torch at the side – look for MIN and MAX on the side. Alfa don’t offer a recommended renewal interval for the coolant, so test it with an antifreeze hydrometer and renew it if its freezing capacity is too high.

2 TOP-UP SCREENWASH The screenwash reservoir’s filler neck is located on the nearside front corner of the engine bay, close to the top of the wing and headlight. Prise off the cap and top-up with a mixture of screenwash and water or pour a sachet of concentrated screenwash in and dilute it with tap water.

3 CHECK BATTERY Make sure the battery is secure along with its terminals – and check the terminals are clean. Measure the battery’s voltage or, if you have a battery tester, check its condition. There’s a fusebox next to the battery, so check inside to see if any fuses have blown or if there are traces of corrosion.

bodywork, there are MacPherson struts at the front with lower arms and an antiroll bar. At the rear, there’s another antiroll bar, along with trailing arms, single upper and lower arms and separate coil springs and dampers. The brakes consist of Brembo four-pots at the front and single-piston calipers at the rear. Most of the involved work appears to be straightforward, with the exception of a few filters (pollen, air and oil), which are a little more awkward than most vehicles. Some service components are not cheap. Take the 14mm long-reach spark plugs, which need changing every four years or

36,000 miles. They cost around £25 each and there are four of them. On the plus side, some service components don’t exist, such as the for-life in-tank fuel filter and a lack of power steering fluid because of electric power steering. We’ve looked at a 2016 model of the 1750cc Giulietta and listed the recommended servicing according to Alfa Romeo and Turin Motors. The 2010-2015 models have a different service schedule, which includes an oil and filter renewal every year (plus basic inspection), but a more major service every 18,000 miles or two years.

4 CHECK BRAKE FLUID The brake and clutch fluid reservoir is located along the engine bulkhead, close to the nearside inner wing. The fluid level can be checked by looking at the outside of the transparent reservoir (MIN and MAX markers). If necessary, top-up with DOT 4 brake fluid.

5 GREASE BONNET RELEASE Spray a light grease over the bonnet release mechanism on the top of the slam panel to help prevent it seizing. Open all four doors and the tailgate to apply more of this grease to the hinges, locks and check straps.

6 REMOVE ENGINE COVER The engine cover is clipped on to the top of the engine, so prise it off. Check that all breather, fuel and coolant hoses and pipes are secure with no signs of fluid leaks. Make sure the exhaust heat shield at the front of the engine bay is secure.

TOP TIP Fit each new spark plug with a length of hose, then tighten with a spark plug spanner and the rubber insert removed.

If the spark plugs are being replaced, start by removing the individual coil packs. Each one is secured with a 10mm bolt. Carefully prise out the coil pack. When refitting them, add a tiny drop of dielectric grease on to the top of the spark plug or inside the coil pack to achieve a good electrical contact and reduce the risk of corrosion.

8 REPLACE SPARK PLUGS Remove the four long-reach spark plugs using a 14mm spark plug socket. Check the replacement spark plugs are the same length, especially the length of the thread. Tighten them to 26Nm.
