In our exclusive shoot, Katie Price and her sister Sophie open up about having babies, working together, and why they’re the same, but different
I
t’s lovely to see Katie Price and her younger sister Sophie enjoying some quality time together at our exclusive shoot in Essex. The pair are joined by Sophie’s three-month-old son Albert, who she tenderly cradles as we sit and chat. It’s certainly a family affair for the duo as they celebrate their latest business venture.
The siblings are launching their tots’ clothing company, Little Pricey, which caters for babies up to the age of 18 months. The collection will feature a mix of sleepsuits, blankets and pyjamas. “When I first had Harvey I dressed him in Nike trainers, tracksuits and jeans, but when they’re newborn they want to be comfy in babygrows and loose clothes,” Katie, 43, tells us.
“So that’s why we thought we’d do this collection. There’s different colours, it’s affordable, and it has our little rabbit logo on, which is really cute.” “It’s sustainable, too,” Sophie, 31, adds. As well as the sisters’ work, we also discuss plans for more babies. Sophie, who shares adorable Albert with partner Harry Brooks, tells us she hopes

to add another little one to her fold next year, while Katie, who’s engaged to Carl Woods, reveals she’s always broody and will use a surrogate next time round. “I’ll just keep going and going,” she tells us. It’s nice to see Katie, who is mum to five children – Harvey, 19, Junior, 16, Princess, 14, Jett, eight, and seven-year-old Bunny – in such high spirits, considering the circumstances. Just days before our shoot, Katie was the victim of an alleged attack which required her to receive hospital treatment for a facial injury. A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault, theft and coercive and controlling behaviour. But as ever, Katie remains stoical, and when we natter in the garden it’s clear she’s staying strong and focusing on the future. Here, Katie and Sophie talk to new about working together, their differences and similarities, and why Katie feels in such a good place after her stint in the Priory for severe trauma rehabilitation in 2019.
Hi guys. Katie, how are you feeling after everything that’s happened recently? Katie: I’m a strong woman and I’m looking forward to the future.
We love this sisterly collaboration. Is it important for you to be a role model for strong women in business? Katie: Well, you know me, we come from a strong family and whether you’re a man or a woman, it’s equal. We’ve both got a good work ethic. Sophie’s the geeky one – she’s good with computers and organising whereas I like the creative side. Sophie: I’m more the admin side. Katie: It’s a good combination. There’s not loads of people getting involved, it’s just me and Soph. We do it all ourselves and have fun.
Tell us all about your babies’ clothing collection... Sophie: It’s for babies up to 18 months and it’s going to be jersey wear, really comfortable babygrows, cosy blankets and pyjamas. Then, as the collection gets bigger, we’ll look to do more little outfits and bits like that. Katie: Obviously we’ve both had babies and comfort is the thing.
Sounds great, girls! Katie: We’ve created our own version of a Louis Vuitton style print, too. Sophie: I looked at it at first and wasn’t sure about it. Katie: But when she saw it made up, she said, “I really love it.”
10
‘If I can’t trust my sister, who can I trust?’ Katie would love to add to her brood
I can’t wait to do the matching pyjamas. And I’m doing it with my sister – if I can’t trust my sister, who can I trust? It’s like we’re starting an adventure together. Our next aim is to do bedroom wear, matching curtains, bedding and blankets. Sophie: And prams. Katie: Cribs. We wanted to do this as a fun thing together and not get stressed out. So I said, “Let’s start small and watch it grow.” Hopefully it will inspire other people to follow our journey, knowing we’re just two sisters doing it together – and why not?
Exactly! Do you tell each other everything? Katie: Yeah, we do. She puts me in my place all the time. “Don’t do this on Instagram,” or “Don’t do that.” But she’s only got my interests... Sophie: ...best interests at heart. Katie: And Soph does a lot with me now and it’s good. She understands me and people around me. She’s like my mum – a no bulls***ter. I’m definitely not the fiery one in my family – my mum and my sister are the bulldogs. She’s organised and gets things done. It’s a good combination.
You seem to have such a strong bond. Was there anything you used to fight over as kids? Sophie: Just clothes really. Katie: And shoes. Sophie: Oh, here we go... I used to nick her shoes and my bunion used to make a dent in them. Katie: And my bags and clothes would go missing, which is what sisters do. But now we’re older I wouldn’t wear what she does. Sophie: And I definitely wouldn’t wear what she wears. Katie: So we’re alright then! Our feet are different sizes and I wouldn’t wear brogues or whatever they are anyway. Sophie: There’s nothing wrong with my brogues!

What’s your fondest sisterly memory? Katie: I was obsessed with Soph when she was a baby. When she was asleep I used to pinch her so there was an excuse to pick her up. I did everything with Soph and I taught her to ride and drive. She had a hard time at school because of me, so I feel sorry for her for that. At the time I didn’t realise. She’s put up with a lot of rubbish because of me.
What’s the most “out there” thing you’ve done in each other’s eyes? Katie: You’ll be here all day if you’re asking Sophie my most out there, but my family are immune to it now. Sophie: I’m just used to it. Katie: Sophie makes me laugh because she does wacky things. Do you know the most out there thing she does? She’ll go to a
museum on her own to look at paintings and she goes to the cinema on her own. Sophie: Yeah, but there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s having the confidence to do it on your own. Katie: And she’s so interested in old history. We are opposites, but we are quite alike. We’ve got the same banter.
Who makes the important business decisions? Katie: We do it together. It’s equal. Sophie: Everything gets approved on both sides. Katie: She has the expertise on her side and then I put mine in, so it’s a good combination.
Have you been burnt in business before, Katie? Katie: Have I been burnt before? Are you actually serious?! I have been burnt so badly in business from a young age. You get too trusting and I don’t like to see the
bad in anyone, but when it comes to money you’d be surprised how greedy people get. They’ll do anything to stitch you up and try and take a cut. This way, like a lot of stuff I do now since the Priory, I’m in charge of everything and I know everything. I know what I get paid, when it comes in, the tax, the VAT, I know where everything goes now. And it’s such a nice feeling being on top of it rather than being dictated to. There’s a difference.
You seem in a good head space at the moment… Katie: Going to the Priory was the best thing ever. It’s been 18 months now. I wouldn’t have been able to do this two years ago. I’m doing Celebrity MasterChef, my Channel 4 makeover show, and I’m doing a second series for the BBC with Harvey. There’s a couple of other bits I’m doing

with my sister too. My equestrian and make-up ranges are coming up. You have to be switched on to do it all and enjoy it. That’s the thing now, I won’t do anything I don’t enjoy. When your head is in a good place, it’s amazing. Sophie always talks about the book The Secret. Sophie: It works! Keeping positive. Katie: Where I’ve been positive, things are coming my way, it’s unbelievable. Turning down work, because I don’t feel I have to or want to do it, is a good position to be in. I can just enjoy what I do and be stress-free. I don’t need dramas and stress but they just keep happening.
Katie’s used to being the centre of attention, but how do you feel about being more known now, Sophie? Sophie: I’m very private, I’d like to say. Katie: I’m the one who’s out there and Soph’s more the silent partner. We’re like chalk and cheese.
We can tell! Albert is adorable. Have you enjoyed motherhood, Sophie?
PHOTOGRAPHER: GLENN GRATTON STYLISTS: HARRIET WHEELER & KATY GALE HAIR: JOEL MAGUIRE MAKE-UP: FERN HOWE-SHEPHERD
Sophie: Yes, I have. Albert is three months now. It’s great, but it’s been a bit of a shock to the system. But I’m loving it. I’ll have another one next year. Katie: She’s a really good mum. She and Harry have just gone into it naturally.
14
Do you spoil Albert, Katie? Katie: Of course I spoil him, he’s my nephew. With Soph, because she’s grown up with me and all my kids, she’s very good with babies and she knows I am. When we’re together it’s like, “I’ll calm him down.” Sophie: Tag team. Katie: Yeah, we’re a good tag team.
Is Katie hands-on with Albert? Sophie: She’s very hands-on with him. If I have a little moment where I need to have five minutes and take a breath, she’s like, “Soph, let me take him.” Katie: I know what it’s like, sometimes with a baby you don’t want people to take them off you, but Soph’s fine with me because I’m family. When you get stressed, babies sense it, and I don’t get stressed when they cry. Sophie: If I go out in public and he starts crying I still get a bit anxious that people will look. I’m still building up my confidence taking him out. Katie: But it’s alright when we’re out together, because she knows I’m used to it, so it’s not like dumb and dumber.
Has Albert made you feel broody, Katie? Katie: I’m always f***ing broody and I will have more. I can only have one more because I’ve had caesareans, so I’d definitely use a surrogate until I’ve got no eggs left. I’ll just keep going and going.
Do you think the urge to have more children ever goes? Katie: I think it does, because a lot of women I speak to know when they’ve had enough. You can go to someone, “Do you want more?” And they say, “No thanks. I’m absolutely done.” Or as you’ve just heard from Soph, “Yeah, I’m going to have more.” You know when you’re done and I’m not done. When I see Sophie with the baby it’s so full-on, and I know they take up your time, but I’m lucky that in my job a baby can come with me.
How are you feeling about Harvey starting college, Katie? Katie: I don’t know. But it’s not like I’m leaving him. I’m still going to see him all the time, but it’s that next step. Lots of good things are happening. I’ve turned Covid into a positive. When I came out of the Priory, Covid happened, so I had a lot of time at home to reflect on what I want to do, and I’ve used the time wisely. I’m in a really good place.
And Junior’s signed a record deal!
TO HEAR KATIE AND SOPHIE TALK THROUGH THEIR STUNNING COLLECTION, SCAN THE CODE BELOW!
Katie: He’ll be a little star. He’s always been good at singing. His dad [Peter Andre] is the singer, even though I still try, but his dad knows more in that area than me. And Princess does all her bits with me. Watch this space with Princess, because you don’t know what’s coming up with her!
Has she got something big in the pipeline? Katie: Yes, of course. You can’t just have one doing it.
Would you like to pursue your singing career? Katie: I’m performing at an event
‘IT’S A CRUEL WORLD OUT THERE’
and singing a couple of tracks there, which I can’t wait for. I’ve still got 12 tracks on my album that I’m finishing. Whatever anyone thinks, I’m still going to do my singing. Whether people love it or hate it, I’m doing it.
You’re so upbeat. Do you think this year will get better for you? Katie: I’ve worked out in my life it’s scales – there’s a balance. As much is good, as much is bad. It’s a nice combination, because if everything was nice all the time, you’d think, “This isn’t right.”
You recently underwent cosmetic surgery and had liposuction, a Brazilian bum lift and work done to your face. How are you feeling? Katie: What pisses me off is when people think they know what I’ve had done. The other day a Sophie with baby Albert newspaper said I’ve had four facelifts – I’ve never had a facelift in my life! I’ve had bits done, but I don’t need to lie about it. And there will be more. Why not? I’ve started the journey and I love it and it’s what I like to do. I did my whole modelling career naturally, other than my boobs. There was no Instagram, no airbrushing, no filters, I did it with my natural beauty. Now I’m 43 I do what I like and I don’t have to explain it to anyone. I know I made my career looking how I did, so now if I want to have a little play, I will. I’m not harming anyone. And I’ve had five kids, so people have got to give credit where it’s due.
What’s the dream for you both now? Katie: We know what we want to do with the range, and we’re going to just enjoy it. Sophie: And take it step by step. Katie: I just hope everyone loves it. GEMMA MCCARTNEY The Little Pricey clothing collection will be availabe online soon
I don’t read any trolling comments. I just hear when other people are trolled and I think it’s disgusting. I can predict what people will say, so what’s the point in reading it? I’d rather read a positive quote or have a happy day. I don’t put my head space in that any more, because if you do you’d go absolutely mad. And people do. Trolling is massive. Something should have been done long ago. I’ve been campaigning for Harvey’s Law for ages and I’ve brought in Track A Troll. Covid has slowed things down, but I’ve got nearly 700k signatures now. You need 100k for a debate in parliament and they can’t ignore it. It’s the same with Harvey’s Law. It’s all still happening, but Covid has slowed it down. I’m dedicated to continuing with it. It’s a cruel world out there.

I’M PROUD OF MICHELLE FOR BEING SO HONEST
THE BIGGEST LESSON I’VE LEARNT AS A MUM Last week saw my eldest daughter Molly turn 20. I can’t believe it – she’s still my baby, but I’m so proud of the woman she’s become. In the two decades since becoming a mother, the biggest lesson I’ve learnt is not to be so hard on yourself. I have been hard on myself as a mother because I have been so judged. But you never get it 100% right. With first babies, you panic a lot. I remember looking down at Molly in her crib all the time to check that she was still breathing. It’s so tough, but the most important thing is the love you share. The love I have felt as a mother is indescribable – if I could bottle it, I would.
PHOTOS: SHUTTERSTOCK
HAPPY I’VE TURNED MY LIFE AROUND I recently signed a multi-millionpound deal as an investor and creative adviser with Thrillz, a company that provides personalised celebrity video messages and live experiences.
I can’t believe how I’ve managed to turn things around. From being bankrupt to where I am now. I’m so happy.
My good friend Michelle Heaton gave a very emotional interview on Lorraine recently and apologised for secretly drinking before her interviews. I’m so proud of her. In recovery, the most important lesson is acceptance and owning up to everything you’ve done. There’s no point in trying to hide anything. You have to reveal the worst of yourself to move forward. I’ve always been honest with my kids about my past because there’s no point hiding it. What hurts is that even 13 years sober, kids still tease my children in the playground about my past. Even though my kids never witnessed me taking drugs, they’re the ones still suffering for it years later.
I never take my recovery for granted either. I know I could still relapse tomorrow. I’m human and who knows what could happen? And if I did relapse, it wouldn’t mean that I’m a bad person or a bad mother. I have to take my recovery day by day.
GETTING TOUGH ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE On SAS: Who Dares Wins, I spoke out about my past experiences with domestic abuse and my marriage to my late husband George Kay. I’ve since had so many incredible messages of support from women. It’s such a tough subject to tackle openly, but if speaking out can help others going through something similar, then it’s worth it.

na Healy isn’t short of energy. The singer has carved out a career in music alongside being a mum to two adorable kids and staying on top of her fitness training. Although she and her The Saturdays bandmates haven’t performed together for seven years, the 39-year-old isn’t ruling out the possibility of a reunion, which will no doubt be music to their fans’ ears. Una’s health regime consists of working out up to six times a week, with a mix of swimming, running and exercises devised with the help of a personal trainer. But the star’s top priority is her children – six-year-old son

Tadhg and daughter Aoife, nine – whom she shares with exhusband Ben Foden. Since she and Ben split in 2018, the family have settled into their new lives in Ireland. Here, she opens up about chatting with her bandmates, writing new songs and inspiring other parents to enjoy getting crafty with their kids…
Hi Una! You’ve been focusing a lot on your music lately – could there be a reunion with The Saturdays on the cards? Hopefully it’s something we’ll do. I think it would be a shame not to. We haven’t discussed it, but I hope we do something.
We’ll keep our fingers crossed! You’re e busy with music Do you see the girls much? and thee kids, but do you uch “Una time”? get much I haven’t seen them in a while because of the pandemic, but we’ve got a WhatsApp group we use to keep in touch and I caught up with Mollie [King] and Frankie [Bridge] before moving to Ireland. They’re all doing well and I’m happy for them.
Do you take inspiration from your life when writing songs? Yes, I write a lot about my life and how I’m feeling. Inspiration hits me at different times, but I think it’s good to write songs that other people can relate to.
Has it been hard making music during the pandemic? Musicians were impacted as we couldn’t perform, which was really sad. But I was still able to write and record.
So can we expect to hear some new music from you? On stage with The Saturdays
I’ve been writing some new material, so I’m hoping to get an album together and get back out on the road next year.
I get so o much done while the kidss are at school. Those hours are precious because I can catch up with work, house chores and maintaining my fitness. Exercise is my “me” time – I’m big into keeping fit and going to the gym.
You always look amazing! Any tips you can give us? I had a personal trainer for a while who used to work remotely, and he had an app where he’d give me loads of O I got the h exercises to ddo. Once hang of things, I made a routine for myself. It’s very basic, and I do it three or four times a week. Plus, I run or swim twice a week too. I like to mix things up. Exercise is Una’s “me” time
How have Aoife and Tadhg coped with the past 18 months? Lockdown was more difficult because they couldn’t even meet up with their friends. It was just

us and we were stuck indoors, apart from going out for a bike ride. Now things feel easier because the world has opened up again, but during the summer holidays there were times when you’d think, “What more can I do with them?” There definitely aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done!
Do you have your family on hand to help with the kids? Yes I do, and my mum is a very hands-on granny. She’s different to what she was like with me as a child, but then I think they change as grannies. The kids are lucky that they have their grandparents around them so much, especially as I do still have a lot of work in the UK and I have to fly back and forth.
It must be great to be back home in Ireland… It’s great to be close to family. I’m double jabbed so I do still fly back to the UK and divide my time between both, so that’s great. The kids love it here too, they’ve made lots of friends.
You’ve been working with the streaming service NOW on its recent craft campaign – can you tell us more? 5,000-plus episodes were added to the children’s content on the entertainment package on NOW. They also teamed up with Arty Crafty Kids to help parents who are struggling to come up with ideas for things to do to keep the kids happy. There are crafts based on some of the characters from the TV shows that are on NOW, with different things to create. Perfect for passing an hour or so! ‘My baby boy has changed my life’
Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins star Jake Quickenden on why the hardcore show is even tougher than it looks and how he juggles his busy schedule with fatherhood
F
ormer X Factor star Jake Quickenden isn’t the type to shy away from a challenge. He braved I’m A Celeb in 2014 and won Dancing On Ice in 2018. So it’s hardly surprising to see him popping up in Channel 4’s Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. Although the gym fan says he was in the best shape possible to take on the gruelling challenges in the wilds of the Hebrides, he admits he was taken aback by just how full-on the experience is compared to how it looks on TV. Jake, 33, is engaged to former Celebs Go Dating star Sophie Church, 27, and lives with her, her six-year-old son Freddie from a previous relationship, and their six-month-old baby, Leo. Here, he tells us about the most brutal Celebrity SAS moments, his new projects and his wedding plans…
Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins clearly isn’t for the faint-hearted. How scary is it? It’s absolutely brutal! It’s a show I’ve always wanted to do and I admired people who did it, because it’s not your typical reality series. A lot of people would turn it down because they don’t want the challenge, but I’m the kind of person who loves putting myself through it. I think that says something about my character.
watching me might have made their minds up about me by the way I look, by what they’ve seen of me on other shows, and I wanted to show a different side of myself. I’m not just someone who messes about on reality shows. I can be taken seriously and grit my teeth and put myself through hell.
No doubt your dad and brother would have been proud of you… My dad never got to see me do any TV. It’s mad to think he passed away before I went on The X Factor. But yeah, of all the things I’ve done, this would have made him the proudest because my dad was a bit of a fitness fanatic. He told me I could be whoever I wanted to be. He said, “If you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability so that if you fail you know you have given it 100%.”

When you’re sitting at home on the sofa, you go, “I can do that.” But what you see is different to how it really is. Celebs will do an activity or challenge, but what you don’t see is the 10k run up a hill they did to get there. You don’t just film your trial and go and warm up in a hotel and have a McDonald’s. It’s all day, every day.
What did you learn about yourself?
I knew I was going to be one of the fittest there, because I’m into the gym, and I’ve always been competitive. I grew up with my dad and two brothers, fighting over FIFA on the games console. But I know I’m also a very emotional person, and I learnt it’s good to be emotional and have feelings. I wouldn’t want to change who Leo was born in February I am for anyone.
Is that the main reason you did it? Yes, but I also wanted to show people I’m mentally strong. I lost both my dad and my younger brother to bone cancer and that was the hardest thing I’ve ever been through, so I knew nothing could break me. People
How did you rate your chances before you started?

that’s my job and it does take me away. Next year, I’m going on tour with the musical Footloose, too.
It sounds like you’ve got a lot on your plate… Yes, but I’m always happy when I’m busy. We’re touring the UK for seven months with Footloose and I’m doing panto [Beauty & The Beast] over Christmas in Lincoln. I’m recording a second series of my podcast, called It’s Not All Dad!, and I’m training for a celebrity boxing fight in October at Manchester’s AO Arena in front of 20,000 people. I love taking myself out of my comfort zone.
Are you worried about taking blows to the head? As long as it doesn’t knock my veneers out – they cost too much money! Being punched isn’t too bad. I’ve sparred three times now and took some big hits. I quite like it, in a weird way.
With so much on your agenda, how do you cope with stress?
I’m a massive believer in CBD oil and I chew on CBD gummies. A lot of people think it’s weed, but it’s nothing to do with it, it’s all legal. I’ve also started taking ice baths to kick-start my day, and I’m always in the gym, I’m always What did your family running, I’m always doing think of you doing the show? something. Exercise helps. You seem to be a softie… I probably trust people too easily which, in this industry, isn’t always a good thing. I like to be as trusting as I can be until someone gives me reason not to be. I’ve been s**t on too many times now to not do that.
Have you and Sophie set a date for your wedding? Yeah, we’re planning to marry next year if we can get everything sorted. We’re thinking of doing it in Ibiza, because that’s where we met. We’ll probably rent a villa and have a big party. KIRSTY NUTKINS He and Sophie hope to marry next year

Kim and Kanye ‘committed to staying together’ The Kardashian/Jenner ladies are never short of relationship drama
K
im Kardashian raised a question mark over her relationship status with estranged husband Kanye West when she attended a listening party for his new album Donda in a wedding dress. And insiders now claim the reality star may be putting the brakes on their impending divorce in a bid to work on their seven-year marriage.
26
This came after the rapper was said to have admitted to his alleged infidelity in the song Hurricane, talking about a “new chick” and “still playin’ after two kids”. Sources claimed, “They are putting on a united front and are committed to trying to stay together – not sure if that means she will withdraw the divorce papers, but they’re taking it day by day.” Fans have also claimed that the split may be a hoax to promote Kanye’s new music, with one insisting, “I’m suspecting the divorce issue is a publicity stunt.” Kim, 40, filed for divorce from Kanye, 44, in February, later revealing on her reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, she had grown tired of the pair leading separate lives. The mum-of-four – who has children North, eight, Saint, five, Chicago, three, and Psalm, two, with Kanye – explained at the time, “After turning 40 I The couple have realised I don’t want a four children husband that lives in a different state to me.”
KYLIE AND TRAVIS ‘LOVED-UP’ AHEAD OF BABY NUMBER TWO
Travis and Kylie with daughter Stormi
Kylie Jenner and her rapper boyfriend Travis Scott are said to be more loved-up than ever as they reportedly gear up to welcome their second child together. The couple – who are already parents to three-year-old Stormi – are thought to be excited to add to their brood. Beauty mogul Kylie, 24, has yet to comment on the baby speculation, but famously kept her first pregnancy a secret until she had given birth.

Kourtney’s romance with Travis, 45, went public earlier this year and the pair sparked speculation they may have secretly tied the knot during a trip to Las Vegas in July. But things may have taken a sour turn after Travis was caught liking a shady tweet about a double date that he and Kourtney went on with Scott and his 20-year-old flame Amelia Hamlin. It read, “What does a 2001 baby Kourtney with have to do with these grown ass her ex Younes people. I know that dinner was awkward as hell.”
KHLOÉ AND TRISTAN SPARK REUNION RUMOURS
Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson fuelled talk that their romance may be back on when they both attended the birthday party of basketball star LeBron James’s wife in LA. Khloé, 37, and Tristan, 30 – who share three-year-old daughter True – were pictured arriving and leaving separately,
but onlookers claimed they remained close throughout the night. They are said to have split earlier this year when NBA player Tristan was accused of cheating. He was rumoured to have been unfaithful shortly before Khloé gave birth in 2018, and a year later was seen kissing family friend Jordyn Woods.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s recent fairy-tale trip to Venice allegedly drew furious criticism from the reality star’s former partner Scott Disick. ichelle Heaton is finally feeling excited for the future and is determined to tackle her recovery head-on, a source close to the star told new. Earlier this year Michelle shockingly confessed that she’d been hiding a secret drink and drug addiction and, speaking on Lorraine, she explained it had significantly worsened during lockdown. Friends, including Katie Price, convinced Michelle to go to rehab and now the 42-year-old has been sober for more than 100 days, after entering the Priory rehab facility in April. Opening up on Lorraine last week, the former Liberty X singer – who is mum to Faith, nine, and Aaron, seven – broke down in tears as she apologised to the host for previously drinking before interviews on the show. t’s hard to believe that someone who has sold millions of records, earned a coveted Royal Television Society Award and made a difference to countless people via ITV’s Invisible Disability campaign could be so humble and down to earth. However, when we speak to Hollyoaks star and Loose Women panellist Kelle Bryan, 46, that’s exactly what she is. The successful mum-of-two has made headlines in recent years for opening up about her battle with Lupus and discussing how she helped her son after he experienced racial discrimination aged just five. Now, Kelle is about to make history as part of Channel 4’s Black To Front initiative. The event will see an entire day – Friday 10 September – devoted to Black talent on and off screen. The day includes an hour-long Hollyoaks special, focusing on the Deveraux family and produced by some of the show’s outstanding Black creators. Kelle, who plays Martine Deveraux, promises the episode will be “full of drama” and “a true celebration of Black culture”. We chat to Kelle – who is married to Jay Gudgeon and mum to Regan, now nine, and Kayori, seven – about what being a part of the episode meant to her and what she’d love to see next. Plus, we find out how her mates Judi Love and Katie McGlynn are feeling ahead of their stint on Strictly, and touch base on her recent reunion with old Eternal bandmate and childhood friend Louise Redknapp…
Hi, Kelle! Let’s talk about Channel 4’s Black To Front Hollyoaks special…
You’re going to see the Deverauxs with no holds barred. In this episode, we get the freedom to express ourselves. It’s really celebratory.
Why is this kind of positive representation so important? Sometimes we tell stories that are more political or race-based in order to target viewers who perhaps haven’t challenged themselves in those areas. But everyone can relate to this story. It’s about celebrating what unifies us as a society.
There was an incredibly powerful episode that examined unconscious bias. How did it feel filming this episode in comparison? They’re two very different things. The unconscious bias episode was written to challenge a certain mindset and explore an issue that we wanted to highlight. The Black To Front episode however is all about celebrating our culture, and showing what brings us together as a society.
What was it like to collaborate with a team of Black creatives on a project like this?
‘This is a historical moment’
It was brilliant. Patrick Robinson [the former Casualty star who directed the episode] and all that he comes with historically was amazing. I’ve also been afforded a script editor credit on this one, which was great.
Amazing! What did that mean for you? I was able to be a bit more nuanced and got to make sure that all of those flavours come through on screen. We wanted to be accurate in our portrayal of Black culture, what we like to celebrate, and what it’s like behind closed doors. It was all about inviting people to have a peek at what it’s really like.

Why is this day so important? Channel 4 has always been at the forefront when it comes to tackling difficult subjects and challenging people’s mindset. To go the extra mile and have a whole day dedicated to Black talent speaks volumes. This is a historical moment, so it’s really important to all of us involved.
As a Black woman and a mother, how important to you is it that this kind of representation exists in the mainstream media? It’s essential. Equality is about representation. My children are
With her kids Regan and Kayori

fortunate because they can watch Mummy on TV. They need to be able to see themselves as equal in all aspects of life. My children are growing up in a world where they’re able to ask questions and have those conversations. The Black Lives Matter movement has meant they can do that openly. Be it at school or at home with family, or with their peers, they can have those talks.
Has the TV landscape changed for the better? Yes, you’re seeing Black women in leading roles – like The Equalizer with Queen Latifah, for example – which wouldn’t have happened before. It’s definitely changing.
What kind of thing would you love to see on television in the future? The collection of people that come together to make television needs to become more diverse. Then, you’ll get the reflection of that on screen.
Would you say that there’s still a long way for us to go? Yes. At the moment we’re pushing lots of it and in lots of different ways – as we should – but at some point it needs to become the norm rather than a “thing”. That’s the next step. So rather than it being a
case of, “Oh, look we’re doing a special Black episode,” it’s just normalised.
We’ve got to ask you about Strictly. Your fellow Loose Women panellist Judi and Hollyoaks co-star Katie McGlynn are both competing... Oh my God, it’s amazing. Everyone at Loose is so happy for Judi. We’re 100% behind her, as all of us at Hollyoaks are with Katie.
How do you think they will both fare?
They’ll both be dark horses in the competition. I think with Katie, people will fall in love with her personality. She’s so down to earth and relatable. Then there’s Judi, who’s electric! Judi will bring her personality into her dancing and that’s what will win over the crowd for her.
Speaking of celebrity friends, you bumped into your old bandmate Louise Redknapp recently... It was a complete surprise! Because of Covid we couldn’t go for dinner like we wanted, but we got to see one another briefly which was nice. We’ve been friends since we were kids so we do keep in touch.
Going back to Hollyoaks, what do you hope viewers take from the episode? I hope people will get an insight into what Black families are like and realise that there are so many things that unify us.
Can you tell us about what happens in the episode? Felix [Richard Blackwood] – who has been off the scene for quite some time – makes a surprise entrance which Martine is not expecting. We also get to see a Black family celebrate their vibrancy and culture. Oh, and I have a stunt... I won’t tell you too much, but it involves water and a life-saving dive. It’s a massive episode with lots of drama! CHLOE ALEXANDROU

The youngest of David and Victoria Beckham’s sons, Cruz, 16, has been seen in public for the first time with his girlfriend, Bliss Chapman. The pair were spotted looking loved-up at Reading Festival, laughing and holding hands. Bliss, 15, is the daughter of nutritionist and model Rosemary Ferguson and artist Jake Chapman, and has plenty of celeb connections herself – she was a bridesmaid at Kate Moss’ wedding to rocker Jamie Hince back in 2011. Girlfriends in high places, eh Cruz!

Ellie Goulding shocked fans back in February when she revealed she was 30 weeks pregnant. And the singer has now explained why she decided to keep her pregnancy a secret. Ellie, 34 – who gave birth to son Arthur in April – said, “For every new mum it’s daunting and I realised I had an opportunity to just be by myself and get to know all these new feelings and hormones.” The star, who married Caspar Jopling in 2019, continued, “And I just did it by myself and just took it day by day, and it was just a chance for me to understand what was going on with my body, my mind. It was a nice, private time.” Good for you, El!

ALEXANDRA’S TATTOO TRIBUTE
Derek sleeps for hours on end
Alexandra Burke has marked the four-year anniversary of her beloved mother’s death with a touching tattoo. The 33-year-old took to Instagram to post a snap of her wrist, with the inking reading, “Love mum x.” Using fine lines, the tattoo artist mimicked Alexandra’s mum Melissa Bell’s actual handwriting from a birthday card she had given to her daughter. The X Factor winner told her followers, “4 years today.. It doesn’t get any easier. I love you mummy… you are always with me. But now I can look down and see your handwriting on my wrist forever… ”I hope and pray that I’m doing you proud. Everything I do is still for you…. X.”

Kate Garraway has revealed that her husband Derek Draper sleeps for 20 hours a day in his ongoing battle with Covid. The Good Morning Britain presenter, 54, shared the sad news in a discussion with Dr Hilary Jones last week, revealing, “Derek can be

Good Charlotte star Benji, 42, paid a sweet tribute to wife Cameron Diaz last week on her 49th birthday. In an Instagram post, the rocker called the actress “beautiful in all ways” and said he “was glad to have a reason to say out loud I love you”. Aww!

M
ade In Chelsea star Sam Thompson is grinning from ear-to-ear as he reveals to new the recent tricks that he’s played on his girlfriend Zara McDermott. The 29-year-old regularly keeps his social media followers updated on the pranks he pulls on Zara, from peeling her fake eyelashes off while she sleeps, to covering her in baking soda. And overhearing our cheeky conversation, we soon hear Zara, 24, laughing during our Zoom call to Sam. “You have to sleep with one eye open in this household,” she jokes. The smitten pair have faced their fair share of hurdles in their relationship and briefly split last year. But it’s clear from their sweet interactions and playful nature that they’re now stronger than ever. Here, Sam opens up on his romance with the former Love Island star, his ongoing bromance with Pete Wicks, and how he feels about becoming an uncle very soon…
Hi Sam! You and Zara are currently renovating your home. That’s a big project to tackle – how’s it going? It’s killing us! We’re doing a short let at the moment and living out of suitcases. We’re on top of each other a lot, but we haven’t argued, which is great.
So the two of you are still going strong, then? Yes. I always think it must be pretty hard going out with me, especially with the pranks, so the fact Zara puts up with me is amazing. She really is The One.
Do you still like to prank your sister, Louise? I don’t now that she’s pregnant.
34
Mainly because of Instagram and people saying, “You better not do that to Louise now she’s pregnant.” So she has a little break now, a nice holiday from the pranks, but they will be back. When Louise is tired and she’s been up all night with the baby crying, that’s when I’ll strike again.
Are you excited about becoming an uncle? I’m terrified! When I look after Louise’s dogs I can give them back and be like, “Well, that was fun.” When I get a baby to look after it’s going to be different and you need to give the baby back in one piece and make sure that you haven’t done anything like drop him or her.
Loved-up Sam and Zara
We’re sure you’ll do a great job. Will you be a cool uncle?

Do you ever get backlash on social media from the pranks you do? All the time. People moan about my pranks all the time.
You have a really playful relationship with Pete Wicks. How did you both meet? I met him on Celebs Go Dating – I remember looking at him
really as annoyed as he looks? Yes, he’s actually annoyed because he doesn’t get the pranks. He thinks they’re lame and he really doesn’t find them funny. The fact that he doesn’t find them funny is what makes me laugh so much. I tell him to just get on with it.
You and Pete seem to have a great bromance… We really do. There are very few times you see a Pete Wicks smile, but when you get it, it’s amazing. There’ll be times when he’s about to put the phone down and I’ll tease him and say, “Tell me you love me” and sometimes I’ll get him to say it.
Pranking aside, have you had the chance to go on holiday this year yet? I haven’t been away yet, no. There’s no point really and I’m not ready, but now things have started opening up I’m going to start going away more and make some plans. Beforehand, it was a bit touch and go and you didn’t really know what was going to happen so I avoided going away.

‘I owe so much to TOWIE ’ Bobby Norris on leaving the reality show after 10 years and his next career move
F
ans of The Only Way Is Essex were understandably devastated when one of its much-loved cast members Bobby Norris announced last month that he’s taking a step back from the reality show. new magazine’s celebrity interviewer has decided to follow his dreams and pursue a career in presenting and will now host a behind-the-scenes gossip show, instead of being embroiled in the drama in Essex. “They say fortune favours the brave,” the 35-year-old tells us. “I’m a massive believer in fate and that everything happens for a reason.” In our interview we take a trip down memory lane with Bobs to discuss his 10-year stint on the series, from break-ups to hilarious scenes in Vegas. “I’ve had some amazing opportunities and been to some amazing places that never would have come my way if I hadn’t joined the show,” he tells us. Here, loveable Bob reflects on the highs and lows of his time on TOWIE, reveals who his presenting idols are and tells us why he’s not on the hunt for love…
With Gemma Collins on TOWIE
dipping my toe into presenting gigs about four years ago and then over the last two years I’ve been doing more and more, with a few guest slots on Good Morning Britain as a showbiz reporter, hosting music shows and then landing my job hosting Access All Areas on FUBAR radio, to name just a few. It’s no secret that presenting has always been my passion. Of course, I’ve had an amazing 10 years on TOWIE. It’s been such a huge part of my life – 24 series and 300 episodes!
PHOTOS: LORNA ROACH
Hi Bobby! How are you feeling about taking a step back from TOWIE?
38
I’m a massive believer that life is all about timing and everything happens for a reason and now just feels like the right time. I started
He joined the show in 2012
Wow! But it sounds like you’re ready to leave your comfort zone now... I owe so much to TOWIE and I’ve been through so much on that show. From joining at 24 to now being 35, I’ve
had relationships on there, I’ve made lifelong friends. TOWIE was my day job and my comfort zone, but they say fortune favours the brave and there’s never really the right time to do something. It’s no secret to anyone watching the show that the last series wasn’t an easy one for me, but I’m a massive believer in fate.
You did have a few rows in the last series. Have you cleared the air with Amy Childs and Chloe Sims? Absolutely. Me and the girls sorted our differences last series and things are good between us. I get on with all the cast and don’t have a problem with any of them. When you’ve been in a job for that long you really do become a family. You go through so much together. Especially on a TV show, the ups, the downs, the highs, the lows that have gone on over the years and we’ve literally travelled the world together.
What have been the real highs? I’ve had so many. It’s changed my life really. I’ve had some amazing opportunities and I’ve been to some beautiful places that never would have come my way if I hadn’t joined the show. When we filmed The Only Way Is Vegas, that was an incredible experience because normally when we film abroad we take our crew, but because it was in America, we had an American camera crew out there. Bless them, I don’t know what they made of us. They put me and Gemma [Collins] in this car called a Cadillac and it was older than both of us put together.
Yes, we remember this! And I’m not the most confident of drivers when driving abroad and I got in a right state trying to drive this car. The tourists could see cameras and they thought we were filming a comedy film. There was smoke coming out of the bonnet and we ended up driving over a train line. In Essex if there are train lines there are barriers, but they’ve got none of that. So me and Gemma were chatting away and the next thing we know we’re over rails. Thank God
EXCLUSIVE

nothing was coming. It’s those moments you never forget.
What about the lows? Break-ups. When you’re on a reality show and your relationship is focused on, it’s never easy to go through a break-up – especially when it’s so in-depth.
Are you still on the lookout for love? I’ve always been honest that I’d love to meet the right guy, get married, and have a family when the time’s right and I’m with the right person. But I’m cautious that when you look for something you don’t always find it. When he comes along, lovely, but I’m not running up and down the aisles in Sainsbury’s looking for him.
There’s a whole world of TV out there to try aside from presenting, like Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. What’s the dream?
On SAS, when the celebs have to listen to babies crying, there is no way I could do that for eight hours. I can see why it’s torturous, but that would torture
my head a bit too much. I’m very much at a stage in my life, because I do have a few fears and phobias, that I want to tackle as many of them as possible.
We think you’d be good on SAS as you’re quite fit!
Do you know what it is? I’m quite hard on myself and think, “Oh, I couldn’t do that.” But actually I’ve decided I want to do more things that scare me. I love so many of the shows out there and even though I’ve stepped back from TOWIE, it doesn’t mean I would rule out doing other reality shows.
We’re sure you’ll have a flourishing presenting career. Who’s your presenting idol? Eamonn Holmes is incredible. I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing him myself a couple of times. I remember getting ready for school back in the GMTV days and he was hosting that and I’ve followed his career growing up. Phillip Schofield and Paddy McGuinness are fab too. There are so many people who inspire me in this industry. GEMMA McCARTNEY
‘SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE’
My trolling campaign #EndTheTrend2Troll is something I’m still pursuing and is so close to my heart. When I interview people for my new magazine column, Get Gobby With Bobby, I always like to ask celebrities about trolling and there isn’t one single person in the industry who doesn’t get it and that’s not right. I was so pleased to see the steps Instagram has taken this week, where it’s requiring users to enter their date of birth, to provide a mo child-safe experience for under 18s. That’s a huge step in more th right direction and I hope now there will be one or two the m more checks they can put in place. Something needs to b done and I hope it happens sooner rather than later. be

We promised we’d take the kids to The Shard in London and have some lunch where we stayed for Emily’s birthday, so last week we did just that. The little ones especially were mesmerised by it! We had a wonderful day and we also went to the Tower of London. It’s really good that J and P were part of the day, as well. Junior’s just about to start college and any spare time he has he’s in the studio, so to have us together was really nice. Princess posted a beautiful picture of herself and Emily from the day and people were shocked at how much taller and older Princess looks. She’s definitely growing up fast and, thankfully, is still as respectful as ever.

STRICTLY CATERS FOR ALL Colin Jackson has said he wants more older people to take part in reality shows after Bill Bailey won Strictly and he reached the final of Dancing On Ice. I actually think they’ve had a good mixture of older people taking part in Strictly over the years like Lesley Joseph and Johnny Ball, and the show is good at being open to everyone. At the end of the day, it depends whether or not someone older wants to do it as, let me tell you, it’s very intense! But as some have proven, age is no barrier.
Piers in the clear
Now Piers Morgan has been cleared by Ofcom over the comments he made about the Duchess of Sussex on Good Morning Britain, I wouldn’t be surprised if the show wants him back! There’s no doubt Piers is the best at what he does and it would be great to see him and Susanna Reid back together. There is tension at the moment between cancel culture and freedom of speech, and there is a fine line. Let me be clear: racism, sexism or bullying aren’t acceptable and should not be tolerated, but equally, people should be able to have freedom of speech. It doesn’t mean you have to agree with what Piers says. Many films and programmes face this problem, and even we have on the set of Grease The Musical. Some say, “You can’t say that, it’s sexist!” or, “You can’t do that, it’s not PC enough!”, but it’s in the script and you can’t change history. Freedom of speech is a human right and if you don’t like something, then maybe you just shouldn’t watch or read it.
40
LOVE OVER SCIENCE When I get a break from Grease I’m looking forward to putting my feet up and watching some TV. Everyone’s talking about Married At First Sight UK. It’s an interesting show due to the concept that therapists and psychologists try to match everyone up scientifically, based on things like interests, to find the perfect partner. I don’t know if I agree as everything could be perfect on paper, but someone could have a habit that really annoys the other person! To me, unless you spend time with a person, you don’t know how you’d feel, no matter how good-looking they are or you share similar interests. I guess Emily and I were friends for two years before we even got together, so we had that solid foundation.
Changing the rules Instagram is to require everyone to enter their date of birth before using the app to make it safer for children under the age of 18. As a dad of two teenagers, I think it’s a good move. Young people are at the beginning of this whole social media generation and it’s tough. You worry about what they could be exposed to, so anything that can be done to make it safer, I love. I was reading that China has banned under-18s from playing MY VIE video games during the week, ON W T and at weekends they can’t N E WH E S play for longer than an hour. I don’t think we should go that far, but social media and gaming do seem to be taking over!

BEFORE
SLICK TRICK Ever since I saw Mary Bedford and her perfect half-up hairdos on Love Island, I’ve been looking for a product to smooth flyaways without making my fine hair feel greasy. I’ve been using Lazartigue Huile Des Rêves (nourishing dry oil, in English), £32, and it’s a real delight. The silicone-free multitasker features a blend of argan oil, apricot extract and strengthening Egyptian geranium oils, and can be used as a pre-shampoo treatment or applied when styling dry hair. Love Island 2022, here I come.
I gave up on individual false lashes at the start of the first lockdown, and surprisingly didn’t miss them as much as I thought I would. Since then, I’ve become something of a mascara connoisseur, having tested many new launches offering volume and length. Despite many claiming to deliver “false-lash effects”, in reality this isn’t always the case. But MAC’s latest mascara launch certainly sounds impressive, boasting 5mm long fibres which cling to natural lashes. It also features a special tapered 5D brush, made for stretching eyelashes to “dramatic degrees’’. Sounds exciting, right? I applied it like I would any mascara, one initial coat followed a minute or so later by a second. The formula is thick, and applies neatly without causing any product residue to fall on my cheeks – something fibre mascaras are known to do. Two coats later and I was very impressed. My lashes were jet black, lengthened, and had a curved lift to them – something I normally only get with the help of lash curlers, which I loathe to use. It didn’t smudge during the day either, and only budged when I wiped it away with my nighttime oil cleanser. Safe to say I’ve finally found a product worthy of a “falsie” label!

‘My sister’s sham wedding made her take her life’ As bride Daniela stood before her groom, her sister Samanta Stepien, 32, felt something was very wrong

had been through my wardrobe twice, looking, when the penny dropped. “Daniela!” I shouted. “Are you wearing my dress?” A few moments later, my younger sister’s face peered around my bedroom door. “Sorry,” she said, with a guilty smile. I couldn’t help laughing. Daniela was two years younger than me and forever borrowing my clothes and make-up. We were like best friends, as well as sisters. My sister was a whirlwind; full of energy and enthusiasm. She was hard-working; she had two factory jobs and she was training to be an accountant. She loved the gym, boxing, and had a passion for motorbikes. And she was beautiful – Daniela had it all. But I knew, more than anything, she wanted to settle down and have a family. In time I moved out and had a son, Aleks, now 11, and Daniela adored him. “I want a baby of my own,” she confided. But Daniela had been unlucky in love. That was until she met a boyfriend, Raja Rez, whose nickname was Jonny. He was a bit older and like her, he loved motorbikes. They went out riding together. At first, it didn’t seem too serious between them. Then in October 2019, we went to Poland, our home country, for a family wedding. To everyone’s surprise, Jonny knocked on our family home’s door. He’d travelled from Lancashire. “He just jumped on a flight and found me here,” Daniela told me. She thought it was romantic. But I felt it was a bit odd. And he seemed to me rude and distant somehow. When we returned to the UK, Jonny moved into Daniela’s home. He bought her jewellery, flowers and he proposed with a beautiful ring. She was ecstatic. He worked long hours, every day, and she hardly saw him. And I started to notice she wasn’t her usual self. Usually, we spoke three times a day, but she began avoiding me. She stopped socialising with friends too. Once

the party animal, she was now stuck indoors. “What’s going on?” I asked. “We’re just a bit short of money, that’s all,” Daniela told me. “Jonny had some debts. I’ve been helping him out.” “How come he needs your money if he works such long hours?” I asked. But she couldn’t say. I was getting worried. Then, Daniela – a qualified accountant – confessed that Jonny had taken charge of her money and her work laptop. He’d even fitted a tracker to her car, to keep an eye on her. I was appalled. “You have to leave him, please,” I begged Daniela as alarm bells rang in my head. “He’s no good for you.”
CHASING HER DREAM But she just accused me of trying to spoil her happiness. I knew she wanted children and she saw Jonny as the answer to her dreams. In November 2019, she announced they would

marry that month. Jonny had been married before, she said, but was divorced. I was really upset. But I was wary of confronting him and alienating Daniela. Jonny was taking care of all the wedding arrangements, and Daniela was so excited. They were supposed to be having an Islamic ceremony, then a big party, and a civil ceremony at a later date, according to Jonny. On the day of the wedding, I did Daniela’s hair and make-up for her. She looked so beautiful. We hugged and, for a moment, it was like old times. “Remember we’re having a big meal after the wedding, so don’t eat beforehand,” she reminded me. I nodded and smiled. But deep down, I felt she was making such a big mistake and hoped she would pull out. To our surprise, instead of the ceremony we had expected near our home in Lancashire, Jonny took us to a house in Manchester for an Islamic wedding. I didn’t recognise any of the guests, either. Nobody on Jonny’s side had bothered dressing up. There was an Imam to officiate, but Jonny’s parents weren’t even there

and he just shrugged, “They can’t make it.” I felt so uneasy. And when it came to him signing the register, Jonny wrote a different name. What the hell was going on? There was no marriage certificate. Nothing. On the photos afterwards, Daniela smiled, but it wasn’t her usual beam. I knew she was putting on a brave face. And then, Jonny suddenly announced: “Right, unfortunately, the restaurant was booked up so that’s it. The wedding’s over.” “This is a complete sham,” I mumbled, shocked. But I couldn’t bring myself to confront Jonny over it. I knew it would upset Daniela too much.
SPIRALLING INTO DARKNESS Soon after the wedding, she called me to say she’d suffered a miscarriage. She was heartbroken. She later had another one, sunk even lower, and rowed frequently with Jonny. Then, in floods of tears, she turned up on my doorstep – with shocking news. She’d been to see Jonny’s dad and he told her Jonny was living with his wife – he’d been married to her all along. He’d spend his days with his wife, his nights with Daniela. “But he’s married to you!” I cried. “No, he’s not,” she wept. “He faked the whole thing – even the guests were in on
it.” It all fell into place, why he had acted so strangely. By stringing my sister along and pretending they had married, he thought he could have two women. When we angrily confronted him at his cousin’s house, where he was staying, he casually said, “Yeah, I’m married.” Angrily, I shouted, “How could you lie? You’ve broken her heart!” Then he lunged at me shouting in my face “F**k you!” We darted past him and escaped. “Promise me you’ll never see him again,” I pleaded to Daniela. “I promise,” she replied. And for a while, she seemed to get stronger. In July 2020, she bought a new house, a fresh start. But just a couple of weeks later, I was stunned to see a new photo of Daniela and Jonny on social media. I asked her how she could go back to him after all
‘He spent days with his wife, nights with Daniela’
he’d done. He’d told her he’d left his wife for real this time, but I didn’t believe a word of it. Then on 8 August last year, my dad called me. I knew, from his voice, something dreadful had happened. “I’m at Daniela’s house,” he said. “She’s dead.” My heart dropped like a stone inside me. Dad had gone round to see her, to check that she was OK. Instead, he found her body. “No!” I screamed. Daniela was only 28, with her whole life ahead of her. The police came but they were unable to trace Jonny. He’d been seen out with his wife and children, on a trip to Blackpool, the day after Daniela died. After that, he seemed to have vanished. We had to plan a funeral. I chose a white coffin and we had a motorbike procession after the ceremony. It broke me saying my final goodbyes. Meanwhile, the police began looking for Jonny. As the last person to see Daniela, they needed to speak to him. But later, they told us that Jonny was formerly known as Rezwan Javed, and was actually 44. He’d been jailed in 2011 for a £1million fraud with his brother Rehan Javed – he had lied to Daniela every step of the way. An inquest in June this year heard how Daniela took her own life. The hearing heard Jonny was said to have lived a double life with two different wives. At the inquest there was evidence Jonny had been violent towards Daniela, used her home to grow cannabis plants in, and stolen money from her. Apparently texts and calls between Daniela and Jonny, in the days leading up to her death, had upset her so much that she’d told a friend she “couldn’t live any more”. Giving evidence, DI Paul Langley said the police were satisfied there was no third party involvement in Daniela’s death, but they still could not track down Rezwan Javed. He is still at large now. My sister was beautiful, hardworking and intelligent. She had her whole life ahead of her, yet Jonny broke her down until she was a shadow of the person she had been. Dismembered by her ex and his dad – so they could steal her son Mum-of-one Nicole Montalvo, 35, wanted a new life, free from abuse, whatever the cost
T
here were many things that Nicole Montalvo regretted about her marriage to Christopher OteroRivera, but she was very thankful for one thing that had come out of their ill-fated match. Their relationship had given her the most important thing in her life – her eight-year-old son. By 2018, after suffering years of abuse at the hands of her toxic husband, Nicole, 33, was finally out of her relationship with Otero-Rivera, now 33. But in a terrible twist of fate, her beloved son was the one reason that Nicole could never truly be free of the man who had always wanted to control her. He had started dating other people, but was also fighting Nicole for custody of their son. It came to a head when Otero-Rivera, and his girlfriend at the time, allegedly lured Nicole to a remote area. According to an affidavit recorded afterwards, Nicole was slapped repeatedly by Otero-Rivera and thrown to the ground. She was badly beaten and gagged, with a rag forced into her mouth. Nicole said that her ex then tried to break her neck before releasing her from his grip and robbing her. Terrified and bleeding, Nicole claimed that her ex threatened to kill her if she went to the police. Even though she was shaken by the promise of a repercussion, Nicole told the authorities about the attack. Otero-Rivera was arrested on charges of kidnapping and domestic abuse but later pleaded guilty to lesser charges including battery, and the unlawful possession of a bank card.
DIRTY TRICKS CAMPAIGN After receiving credit for time served, Nicole’s abuser spent just eight months in prison and was released on probation. To keep track of him, he had an ankle tag attached to him. He wasn’t allowed to contact her except through a parenting app – which allowed them to

make arrangements for their son. Nicole believed it was in the boy’s best interests to see his father. Even though she suspected that her ex was playing dirty in an attempt to take her son from her, she was sticking to the court agreement. Loved ones said that Nicole had finally broken free from her husband’s control and wanted to move on. She was working at a pizza restaurant, making money to support her son. He was all that mattered to her. But she confided in friends that she believed that Otero-Rivera, and his dad Angel Luis Rivera, now 66, were plotting to do all they could to get custody of the little boy. She believed that they’d tried to hack into her social media account to obtain a naked photo of her in an attempt to discredit her. What she didn’t know, was that they’d also offered people money to plant drugs on her – and worse still. On 21 October, 2019, Nicole dropped her son off to see Otero-Rivera at his parents’ house in St Cloud, Florida. The next day she was due to pick her child up from school, but
she didn’t appear. Instead, his grandfather Rivera picked up the boy, claiming Nicole had asked him to. Nicole was reported missing. Rivera told investigators that Nicole had sent him a text asking him and his wife Wanda to look after their grandson for a few days. “I’m really sorry about everything,” it read. “I should have listened to you. I made a bad mistake. I need you and Wanda to take care of [our son] for a few days until I get things figured out…I am with a friend that is going to help me through this. Tell [him] Mommy loves him.” However, Nicole hadn’t told anyone else that she was going away, and officers suspected the text was sent by someone else – but who? More disturbingly, records showed that Nicole’s mobile phone had never left her former father-in-law’s home. A witness said that they’d seen an excavator digging at the property, but while

ost of us have heard of ovarian or cervical cancers, but how about womb, vaginal or vulval? Awareness of gynaecological cancers is very low, yet each day 58 women in the UK are diagnosed with one. And every day 21 women die as a result. “We want to break down the stigma that surrounds gynae health and raise awareness of the symptoms of the five gynaecological cancers, so we can save lives,” says Athena Lamnisos from research charity The Eve Appeal. “There are many barriers that stop women going to the doctor when they spot a change in their gynae health, but embarrassment is often a big one. “Like all cancers, the earlier they’re diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome, so it’s really important to get to know your body. ‘I’m fighting the same cancer that killed Gran and Mum’
Kerry is doing well five years on from her diagnosis
Kerry Burridge shares her story
Kerry, 43, lives near Yate, Gloucestershire, with her 55-year-old wife, Alison
I
always knew getting ovarian cancer was a very real possibility for me. Both Mum and Gran were diagnosed with it within a year of each other. I watched Mum struggle with chemotherapy, knowing her cancer couldn’t be cured. She gave up when my gran died in 2002, and seeing her fade away was just horrendous. I was only 21, yet cancer was on my radar. It was only when I read about Angelina Jolie’s preventive surgery I decided to do something about it. My wife, Alison, had two lovely children and I knew I didn’t want children of my own, so aged 37 I had genetic counselling. I wanted a hysterectomy, hoping to prevent ovarian cancer. To my surprise, the tests for the BRCA gene, which is strongly connected to the development of ovarian and breast cancer, came back negative, so I wasn’t eligible for surgery. I knew both Mum and Gran dying of the same cancer couldn’t be a coincidence, so I booked a health screening that would include a test for the CA-125 substance – high levels can indicate ovarian cancer. But shortly before the screening, in December 2016, I was lying in bed when I felt a pronounced lump above my pubic bone. Terrified, I went to my GP. She knew my family history and took blood tests. The next morning, I was in a work meeting for the kitchen
and bedroom design business I ran at that time with Alison when I received a voice message. The doctor wanted me to call her back. I felt dread in my very core and, sure enough, I had ovarian cancer. I needed surgery, plus chemotherapy. Initially, the doctors assured me the mass was concentrated in my ovaries, but surgery found it had spread to my bowel. I was devastated, but Alison was determined to keep me hopeful. As well as removing my womb, ovaries and fallopian tubes, a section of my bowel was removed, too, leaving me with a colostomy bag. I felt miserably unattractive. I was in hospital all over Christmas 2016 and by the end of January, still weak from the surgery, I was put on chemotherapy. When a bowel blockage left me weighing 6st, I felt at my very lowest ebb. One night I looked in the mirror and saw Mum looking back at me. I convinced myself I wasn’t going to make it – yet slowly I regained my strength. Alison was brilliant and I don’t think I’d be here without her love and care. Five years on, I’m doing well and have started to go back to the gym. I have CA-125 checks every four months now and so far everything’s OK. I’m still here and appreciate every minute of life. the barbecue to medium-high). ■ Skewer the paneer, peppers and onions onto 8 skewers, alternating as you go. Drizzle or spray the skewers with a little oil and place on a wire rack above a baking tray. Bake in the hot oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden, turning once. You can char further under a hot grill if you like. If cooking on the barbecue or in a chargrill pan, cook on a lightly oiled grill/ griddle for 8-10 minutes, turning and basting occasionally. ■ Sprinkle the kebabs with chaat masala (if using) and serve with the coriander and mint chutney. Add a salad and flatbreads, if you like.
FOOD
ROASTED BEETROOT, CANDIED WALNUT AND GOAT’S CHEESE SALAD INGREDIIENTS INGRED
4-6 medium-sized purple beetroot, scrubbed and trimmed 2-4 medium-sized heritage or candy beetroot, trimmed and peeled Flaky sea salt and black pepper 25g caster sugar 1 tsp butter Pinch of chilli flakes (optional) 60g walnut halves 150g goat’s cheese, crumbled 6-8 mint leaves, shredded A handful of lamb’s lettuce or watercress Zest of ½ orange For the dressing 2 tbsp walnut oil 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1½ tbsp sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar 1 tsp Dijon mustard or horseradish 2 tsp runny honey Zest and juice of ½ orange METHOD

cut the heritage or candy beetroot into very thin slices, using either a mandoline or a very sharp knife. Put into a bowl. ■ In a small bowl, whisk together the dressing ingredients. Lightly season and pour half over the thinly sliced raw beetroot. Marinate for 30 minutes. ■ When the purple beetroot is roasted, leave it to cool. Then, use your fingers to rub the skins from the beetroot before cutting into wedges. ■ Line a baking sheet with baking parchment. Place the sugar, butter and chilli flakes (if using) in a small non-stick frying pan and cook over a medium heat, stirring, until the butter and sugar have melted and turned lightly golden. Stir in the walnuts for a minute until the nuts are nicely coated. Pour out onto the lined baking sheet and use two forks to separate the nuts. Sprinkle with salt and leave to cool. ■ To serve, arrange the discs of beetroot on a plate then pile the wedges of beetroot on top. Scatter over the goat’s cheese, mint and walnuts, and top with the salad leaves. Sprinkle over the orange zest, drizzle over the remaining dressing and season with salt and pepper.

BLUEBERRY AND ALMOND CLAFOUTIS WITH CARDAMOM CREAM INGREDIENTS
Small knob of butter, for greasing 100g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 250g fresh blueberries Zest of 1 lemon 125ml whole milk 150ml double cream ½ tsp almond extract or 1 tsp vanilla extract 3 large eggs 30g plain flour 40g ground almonds 1 tsp baking powder Pinch of salt For the cardamom cream 250ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting Seeds of 4-5 cardamom pods, crushed METHOD
S E RV E S 4-6
■ Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 160°C fan/gas mark 4. ■ Grease a 20cm ovenproof dish with butter and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of caster sugar to coat the inside. Put the blueberries in the bottom of the dish and scatter over the lemon zest.
■ Mix together the milk, cream and almond extract (or vanilla extract). ■ In a separate mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar together until light and frothy, then stir in the flour, ground almonds, baking powder and salt. Gradually pour the milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking all the time, until the batter is smooth and creamy. ■ Pour the batter over the blueberries and sprinkle with caster sugar. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until puffy, golden and just set with a slight wobble in the middle. ■ Meanwhile, whisk the double cream and icing sugar together until soft peaks form. Fold in the cardamom until well combined. Chill until needed. ■ Remove the clafoutis from the oven and transfer to a wire rack for 5-10 minutes. The clafoutis will deflate a little as it cools, but don’t worry! Dust with icing sugar and serve warm or at room temperature, topped with a spoonful of the cardamom cream. ‘WE HAVE TO SET MULTIPLE ALARMS’ Magic breakfast show hosts Ronan Keating and Harriet Scott on early starts, drinking on a school night and the future of Boyzone

or Ronan Keating and Harriet Scott, the insanely early starts that come with hosting their Magic breakfast radio show have been worth it – they’ve only gone and got the highest ratings in the station’s history! Yes, four years after they first started working together, the duo are celebrating the fact that they’re now one of the most listened-to programmes in the country. While Harriet, 49, is a seasoned DJ, it’s been a change of direction for Ronan, 44, who previously made his name in Boyzone before forging his own successful solo career. Now he’s tearing up the airwaves with Harriet, as well as presenting The One Show. Here, the pair celebrate their achievement and reveal how they really feel about the early starts, while Ronan tells us what the future holds for Boyzone… Hi guys. Is it surreal to think you’ve achieved the highest ratings in Magic’s history? Ronan: You never know what way a show’s going to go and if people are going to accept you, because you’re in people’s lives in a major way. You’re in their car, in their kitchen, in their shower, you’re in their life from six in the morning, which, as we know, is the time
when people listen to radio the most. So you have an impact, and to have that… it’s an honour to broadcast. What do you think is the secret to your success? Ronan: Well, I think we’re honest and we both have thick skin, which is really important. Harriet: That’s not true – I go home and cry! [Laughs] Ronan: Yeah, I get the tears out of the way early, before I get home. Seriously, though, we poke fun at each other and we both know the places not to take it, what’s too far or whatever. What’s the secret? I don’t know. I guess we get on, we like each other’s company, we have a good time and have a laugh. Harriet: I think you have to be a people person in this job. Radio is talking about the events of the day. You’re enjoying playing the music, but you also have to be interested in people and be emotionally sympathetic. Ronan’s always been an honorary girl in that he’ll always be empathetic. Ronan: At times I’m both pathetic and empathetic! How do you guys deal with the early starts? What time do you have to set your alarm for? Ronan: I hate it, hate it, hate it!
The pair have been working together for four years
But I have my routine down to a fine art now – I get out of the house in about 12 to 15 minutes. I get everything ready the night before, then slip out of the bedroom, into my clothes, make a coffee and I’m gone. I’m like a ninja at getting out of the house in the morning. I hate early mornings. I spent a lifetime doing the opposite – going to bed late, sleeping in. So then for my world to be flipped on its head over the last four years has been quite a shock to the system. I’ve aged about 15 years! I used to look much younger than this. Have you ever overslept? Ronan: [Clears voice] Over to you, Harriet…
Harriet: You have your morning routine down to a fine art and you have the benefit that, at 5am, there’s not much traffic wherever you’re coming in from. But if you oversleep, by the time you get in the car the traffic’s building up – so there was one occasion where I had to fill and pad because somebody failed to make it into the studio. I think he had to do one of the links from the car. Ronan: I was an hour and a half late! Harriet: I have multiple alarms, do you know? Ronan: Yes, and I don’t miss them any more! Does this job scupper your social life in the week, then? Ronan: Yeah, you definitely make sacrifices. But you make up for it.
ZONEIN
RADIO Q&A
THE OH! ZONE Comedian Desiree Burch on singing Amy Winehouse tunes and why she never feels guilty
Harriet: I have a regular Thursday jaunt, because I think Thursday is OK – you’ve only got Friday to go. Ronan: She’s always hanging on a Friday, because she goes out with the girls on Thursday night and comes in a bit wobbly on her heels. A woman after our own hearts, Harriet! And Ronan, are Boyzone getting back together? Ronan: No, it’s not happening! Harriet: Aw, come on… Ronan: No, we’ve wrapped that up. Luckily, we had the world tour in 2019, because if we had done it
last year, it would have most likely been cancelled. So we got to say a final farewell to our fans and a massive thank you for 25 years. We went to places like Japan, China, Australia and across Europe, then the London Palladium, where Harriet interviewed us every night on stage. It was great to have her there and have a friend to chat to. But that’s it for Boyzone. We had a good run, and now we’re all doing our own things. Everyone’s happy and in contact. I saw Shane [Lynch] at Silverstone last week and [Keith] Duffy and I were chatting yesterday. I haven’t seen Mick [Graham] in a while, but we’re all good.
At the moment I’m watching... Ted Lasso and Feel Good, because I love being on trend, and Drag Race UK, because I also love being behind a trend and catching up to all of it. I’m also watching a bit too much Bailey Sarian and Caitlin Doughty on YouTube – they make videos about true crime and funerals and I’m a bit history and death-obsessed at the moment! The funniest person on TV is… Everyone who works on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. That show never stops giving. My guilty pleasure is… I never feel too guilty about anything that brings me pleasure. I work hard, and I’m not too much of a creep. The artist I’m listening to now is… Tupac. Is it 30 years too late, or are there just a lot of things in society to be mad about? The best film ever made is…There is no perfection – just films that meet us completely where we are at the time that we meet them. My karaoke track is… Still TBD. I never had a real drive to want to do karaoke until the middle of lockdown when we couldn’t do anything. I’m guessing it would be something by Amy Winehouse or TLC’s Waterfalls, because I know all of Left-Eye’s rap. I’m currently reading... A bunch of [sci-fi writer] Octavia E Butler books and I can’t believe it took me this long. The podcast I can’t live without is… Oh, there are so many. On Being With Krista Tippett comes to mind first, for its embrace of the spiritual, cultural, poetic and personal. I listen to The Daily and Brian Lehrer: A Daily Politics Podcast for a lot of my news updates, and Mysterious Universe to keep my imagination going. The TV show I could watch over and over is… Probably It’s Always Sunny or Rick And Morty. Also, more likely than not, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I just like it on in the background. Taskmaster starts on Channel 4 this month

PICK HE OF T K WEE
A TOUCH OF FROST Colin Farrell, Jack O’Connell and Stephen Graham lead an all-star cast in a gripping tale set in the icy Arctic
S
ome books were written to come alive on screen – none more so than Ian McGuire’s bestselling novel The North Water, which follows a group of 19th-century whalers on an Arctic expedition. Colin Farrell, Jack O’Connell and Stephen Graham take on the main roles, but there’s also acting royalty on board with Sir Tom Courtenay among the ship’s crew.

The brutal conditions on the voyage aren’t the only thing the group will need to overcome, as two of the men clash in spectacular fashion. “I read the script and it was an extraordinary character – I’d never been offered anything like it,” explains Colin. “I’m not sure I’ve ever read a role where such sheer carnal brutality was fleshed out so beautifully,” he adds. MY LIFE MY RULES
IT MAKES ME ANGRY WHEN… people chew too loudly when they eat. If I FaceTime my mum and she’s eating, I have to put the phone down. IF THE WORLD ENDED TOMORROW I WOULD… have all my family round for a roast dinner with a bottle of champagne. I’m good at a roast chicken. I fry my green beans with a bit of olive oil and garlic – they taste amazing.

I’D LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED AS… a very good, loyal, loving, caring and bubbly person. I feel like there’s so much more I’m still supposed to do, I’ve not even scratched the surface yet.
The TOWIE star, 27, talks pet peeves and being an independent woman MY HIDDEN TALENT IS… singing. I know everyone will laugh at this, but at every party, when the karaoke starts, I sing Amy Winehouse.
I CHILL OUT BY… napping. I do love a nap!
MY CAREER PLAN B WAS… law. I went to university She likes and when I singing graduated, I was Amy’s tunes going to go back and do another year to do my LLB [Bachelor of Laws]. But then I fell into TOWIE, so I didn’t pursue it. Modelling her collection
I WOULD TELL MY 16-YEAR-OLD SELF… don’t be so hard on yourself. I really beat myself up about a lot of things and I didn’t praise myself enough. I don’t think you’re taught to love yourself when you’re really young. I wish I could go back and say, “You know what Yaz, you’ve made these mistakes but it doesn’t define your future.” IN A CRISIS I TURN TO… my mum and my agent, Francesca.
