‘SHE WAS A BRIGHT SHINING STAR’ FRIENDS AND FAMILY PAY TRIBUTE TO GIRLS ALOUD’S SARAH HARDING WHO PASSED AWAY AGED FOLLOWING HER BATTLE WITH CANCER
S
arah Harding sadly lost her fight with breast cancer last week. The singer was surrounded by loved ones in her final moments, including her mum Marie Hardman and her beloved dogs Claude and Corker. Marie announced the news on Sarah’s Instagram page on Sunday 5 September, saying, “It’s with deep heartbreak that today I’m sharing the news that my beautiful daughter Sarah has sadly passed away. Many of you will know of Sarah’s battle with cancer and that she fought so strongly from her diagnosis until her last day. She slipped away peacefully this morning. “I’d like to thank everyone for their kind support over the past year. It meant the world to Sarah and it gave her great strength and comfort to know she was loved. I know she won’t want to be remembered for her fight against this terrible disease – she was a bright shining star and I hope that’s how she can be remembered instead. Marie x.” Sarah died just 13 months after she revealed her terminal cancer diagnosis. The news shocked the showbiz world, with many celebrities sharing their grief and memories of Sarah on Instagram in

the following days, including her close friends and Girls Aloud bandmates. Nadine Coyle, 36, posted, “I am absolutely devastated!! I can’t think of words that could possibly express how I feel about this girl & what she means to me!! I know so many of you will be feeling this way. For now, I’m sending so much love to you!!!” Cheryl, 38, said she was in “disbelief” over her friend’s death. She wrote, “Although we knew this day would arrive I am somehow still feeling at a loss for words that our stunning, unique, crazy, quirky, kind and soft hearted girl has departed. “As I try to navigate my way through these painfully strange and horribly unfamiliar waves of disbelief & finality I am experiencing, I wanted to extend my condolences to all of our GA fans. We were like an extended family for so long and we know so many of you by name. I wanted to make sure you knew just how much your love and continued support meant to Sarah through her most vulnerable times. She was so grateful and you really lifted her spirits when she needed you most. I also realize so many will be deeply

affected by the circumstances of Sarah’s passing… I am sending you all so much love. I love you Sarah… farewell.” On her Instagram page, Nicola Roberts, 38, said, “I’m absolutely devastated and I can’t accept that this day has come. My heart is aching and all day everything we went through together has raced around my mind. Especially this last year since her diagnosis, as hard as the year has been, our new memories are strong in my heart. “There are so many things to say and at first it felt too personal to put them here and then I remembered that there are so many other people grieving her too. A part of me or us isn’t here anymore and it’s unthinkable and painful and utterly cruel. She would have loved your messages today. “Electric girl, you made us. You gave it everything and still with a smile. A white butterfly flew past my window this morning before I knew, it must have been you.”
Kimberley Walsh, 39, also shared her grief following her friend’s passing. She wrote, “Beautiful Sarah this hurts so bad. To wake up and know that you are really gone is too much to bear. Hearing your infectious chuckle was one of my favourite things in the world. Your fire burned so bright and you loved, lived and laughed so hard. Sending love and strength to everyone who is grieving today. My heart is broken.” Sacha Howell, a consultant at the Christie Hospital in Manchester who treated Sarah, hailed her “mettle” as she fought the disease. “It was a very, very sad day, clearly for her family and friends more so but for myself and for the team on the ward that have nursed her for a good length of time. We are all extremely sad,” he said. “There was an element of fragility to Sarah but also she had a real mettle. She was a really resilient woman and it’s such a sad loss.”

In August last year, Sarah announced on social media that she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer and it had spread to other parts of her body, saying it was “time to share what’s been going on”. She wrote, “Earlier this year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and a couple of weeks ago I received the devastating news that the cancer has advanced to other parts of my body. I’m currently undergoing weekly chemotherapy sessions and I am fighting as hard as I possibly can. I understand this might be shocking to read on social media and that really isn’t my intention.” She continued, “My amazing mum, family and close friends are helping me through this, and I want to say a thank you to the wonderful NHS doctors and nurses who have been and continue to be heroes. I am doing my very best to keep positive and will keep you updated here with how I’m getting on. In the meantime I hope you’ll all understand and respect my request for privacy
during this difficult time. Sending you all so much love….xx.” At the end of last year Sarah revealed she would be writing her memoir, saying, “It’s given me something fun and positive to focus on while I’ve been stuck at home in between trips to the hospital for treatment. I’ve nearly finished it now and this week Mum and I have been looking through old photos choosing which ones to include. It’ll be out after Christmas and I’m really proud of it. I hope you’ll like it.” Her book, Hear Me Out, was released in March and became an instant bestseller, with the star opening up about her childhood, school years, her time in the band, relationships and friendships. The book also revealed that despite undergoing chemotherapy and a mastectomy, cancer had spread throughout her body. “In December my doctor told me that the upcoming Christmas would probably be my last,” she wrote. With Nadine at a Christmas bash in 2012 about her illness, as e well as their time in the group and the fond memories they shared, including the last trip they made together to Soho Farmhouse in the Cotswolds while Sarah had a break from treatment. Cheryl revealed the pair had only recently st been making up for lost time after losing touch following the band’s split. She also said she e was “destroyed” by the news of her friend’s e illness and detailed the n time she broke down on the phone to Sarah. “Mostly, I try to keep my own emotions in check, but on one FaceTime call with her the other day, I couldn’t hold it in anymore,” she shared. “She relayed some terrible news she’d had that day, and I lost it and started crying. I tried to move the phone out of the way so she couldn’t see my face, but she knew what was happening. The mad thing is, it ended up with Sarah comforting me. ‘Oh God, are you OK, babe?’ she said through her tears. ‘I wish I was there just to give you a hug.’ It was so, so heartbreaking. There was Sarah, going through what she was, and she was more worried about me.” Sarah’s book also revealed that it was Nadine she turned to for comfort when she was first diagnosed with cancer. After receiving the news, she spent the evening with Nadine, crying and drinking wine, as her friend told her how much she loved her. “Throughout the evening, we all had our moments of hysterical laughter followed by tears,” she 8

I love you!’” In her own chapter in Sarah’s book, Nadine spoke of her fond memories of her close friend, including admitting she cried every time Sarah spoke during their On a night out meet-up with Kimberley, with Kimberley Nicola and Cheryl. in 2013 “The whole experience was a reminder of just how funny and open she is and the drive to spend time together.” how she really doesn’t care. Saying that the girls gone through those experiences,” she had grown closer since the news, she said. “Sarah knows that. She always explained, “It’s made us be in contact did. Hence why us girls will always be more regularly than we would be there for each other.” normally. As much as this is a tough Nicola broke her silence following time for us, it’s nice that it’s given us Sarah’s diagnosis on Instagram by
commending her friend for her honesty and bravery. Referring to an article written about Sarah, she said, “Calling her brave isn’t enough. This is so much more than bravery.” During Sarah’s final months, fans and friends rallied round to support her. They bought her memoir and downloaded her single Wear It Like A Crown, which she’d recorded 10 years earlier. It soared to No1 in the charts. Sarah thanked her fans on social media, writing, “Hi everyone - hope you’re well. It’s been lovely to hear that you guys have been enjoying Hear Me Out, both the book & the song! I can’t believe you nutters got the song not only into the charts, but to NUMBER 1! I love you all so much, you’re the best people in the world.” In her book, Sarah urged her readers to get themselves checked immediately if they were ever worried about a health issue. She admitted she wished she’d been to see a doctor sooner. “All I can say is, please, girls – please, everyone – don’t let anything get in your way – get checked out if you’re worried about something,” she wrote. “Of course, I can’t know for sure, but I believe that if I’d got things moving with appointments and check-ups faster than I did, I’d probably be in a better place than I am now. I think I would have had more options for treatment, and certainly less spread of disease. It’s a bloody hard pill to swallow, but the best I can hope for is that my experience might encourage other people to get themselves sorted as soon as possible.” Tragically for Sarah, it was too late for her to take her own advice and she lost her battle against cancer. Sarah impressed at auditions
T
here was only one thing the nation was talking about in 2002 – Popstars: The Rivals. The show was a huge hit, with millions tuning in every weekend to see who would be picked to be in the UK’s next biggest girlband and boyband. But never in her wildest dreams did Sarah Harding think, on the day of her first audition for the show, that in just a few short months she would have a chart-topping single as she launched a career that would lead to superstardom. For Sarah, it was one of the best times of her life. She told OK! in 2017, “I love
W
THE BEGINNING
ith so many talent shows on our screens these days, it’s hard to understand how big a deal Popstars: The Rivals was. Presented by Davina McCall and coming hot on the heels of the first Popstars contest, it was watched by millions and its hopefuls made headline news. The five girls who ended up in the final Girls Aloud line-up – Sarah, Cheryl Tweedy, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts – beat hundreds of wannabes for a shot at the big time. The premise for the show was that both a girlband and boyband would be formed and the winners, selected by the public, would go on to release a single. Record producer Pete Waterman mentored the boys, One True Voice, while manager Louis Walsh oversaw the girls and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell acted as an intermediary between the rival camps. Sarah, then 20, almost didn’t turn up for her audition but was persuaded to attend by her boyfriend at the time. Little did she know that her rendition of Last Thing On My Mind by Steps would propel her to fame and fortune. 16
reminiscing and looking at old tour footage because we were in a bubble. Touring for me was probably one of my favourite parts of being in Girls Aloud. Not the rehearsals, but getting out there – meeting the fans and performing. “That’s why I do what I do. I didn’t do it for the fame, I did it because I genuinely love performing, singing and entertaining. It’s all I’ve wanted to do since I was a little girl.” Here, we take a trip down memory lane and look at the formation of the band that made pop history – and is still as popular today as it was back then… Her fears back then were that she would be “making a fool of myself in front of millions of TV viewers”. But standing in front of the three judges in 2002 for those few minutes at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester changed her life forever. After a few strong bars of the song, the judges nodded in agreement and Pete told her, “You’re through, you’re going to London.” And a star was born. Well, almost…

THE LIVE FINAL
arah held her nerve and got through all the elimination rounds to make it to the final. But, naturally, the journey wasn’t without drama. Kimberley only just made it into the band after it was discovered that Hazel Kaneswaran had been 10 days over the age limit to audition – and Nicola only made it because Nicola Ward quit. During the live final, Cheryl was announced as the first band member, followed by Nicola, Nadine and Kimberley. With only five spots available, the selection of the last member came down to a tense choice between Sarah and Javine Hylton. Davina brought the two singers out on to the stage to announce who had won their

place in the most-hyped TV moment of the year. The vote went Sarah’s way. “I was utterly overcome at being chosen, because, in truth, the expectation was that Javine was one of the dead certs to be picked,” she said. “To be honest, some of my tears were because I wasn’t sure all the rest of the girls were so happy with the choice. I know we all feel very different about it now, and that the girls are delighted with the way things turned out.”

SMASHING THE CHARTS
irls Aloud became one of the biggest girl groups the UK had ever seen. Before they could take a breath after winning the show, they were whisked off to shoot their first music video, for Sound Of The Underground. The song was released in December 2002 and flew into the charts, taking the Christmas No1 slot and staying at the top for four weeks. Girls Aloud went on to have 21 Top 10 singles in the UK and six Top 10 albums. They were nominated for five BRIT awards and in 2009 they won Best Single for The Promise. Remembering that moment in her book, Sarah recalled, “Winning the BRIT for The Promise was one of the biggest moments of my life… I’m sure all the other girls will say the same. As usual, I was the first to grab the award, holding it aloft and screaming, ‘It’s about time!’” Other hits included Biology, Call The Shots, Love Machine, Something Kind Of Ooooh, Jump (recorded for the film Love Actually) and Untouchable.

he girls were on a roll and went on to sign lucrative commercial deals with Samsung, Nintendo and KitKat, and for limited-edition false eyelashes for Eylure, Barbies for Mattel, Pandora bracelets and Sunsilk hair products (said to have netted each band member £250,000 alone). Sarah also bagged a solo contract with Ultimo. Sarah was ecstatic at their success and it was clear early on that the band was going to be huge. The girls had a Spice Girls quality, which meant every band member appealed to the fan base in a different way. From the outset, Girls Aloud were a rare beast in the pop world, as a group of substance that oozed glamour, released catchy tunes and appealed to all ages. The girls started out wearing Dorothy Perkins, but soon graduated to designer labels, famous boyfriends and getting used to the finer things in life. And none of that was a problem, as their time in the band was reported to have netted each member upwards of £5 million.
O
THE TV SHOW
ver six weeks, between 11 April and 16 May 2006, the public were treated to a glimpse behind the scenes of Girls Aloud in a TV show called Girls Aloud: Off The Record. The six-part show focused on the build-up to their successful Chemistry album tour, from appearing on TV shows to filming the video for Whole Lotta History in Paris, as well as doing promotional trips to Australia, New Zealand, Ibiza and Greece, and visiting China. It was no-holds-barred WWW.OK.CO.UK 19

viewing, which showed the girls facing all the challenges of being successful pop stars – including the gruelling travel schedule and trying to balance their home and work lives, and personal relationships. Rather sweetly, when the girls reunited at Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire to hang out with Sarah following her cancer diagnosis, they decided to watch the entire series again. You can imagine the howls of laughter.
THE PARTYING
W
hile the girls all enjoyed going out, Sarah was always seen as the party girl of the band and earned the name “Hardcore” Harding in the tabloids. In fact, in Off The Record, she’s seen out on the tiles saying, “I haven’t got anyone to stay in for so I might as well go out and get p***ed.” Of course, this made her a tabloid favourite and she was followed everywhere she went. She once said, “When I lived in London there was something going on every night of the week and you never wanted to miss out. I always wanted to be the life and soul.” Nicola and Kimberley expressed concern about Sarah’s behaviour and she went to rehab in the US in 2011 for depression and alcohol issues. She said, “I’ve been told by those close to me that was when I hit my worst. I was crying hysterically. I felt ashamed, embarrassed, terrified – my emotions were all over the place.” Fortunately, she was able to successfully close that chapter in her life, retreating to her country home to spend time with her beloved animals.
A
THE TOURS
long with all their promotional work, the girls staged six very successful tours. The first in 2005 was What Will The Neighbours Say? and took in 23 shows over 20 venues. This was followed in 2006 by the Chemistry tour, which saw them strutting on a catwalk. The Greatest Hits Tour was a short tour in May and June of 2007, where they performed all their hits up to that point. Then in 2008 came the Tangled Up tour, which was bigger and longer than the others, costing around £3 million to stage. Their costumes were designed by Julien Macdonald and for their opening number the girls arrived suspended in the air, wearing black capes. The Out Of Control tour in 2009 was their fifth and had to be extended due to their popularity. And their final outing as a five-piece was Ten: The Hits tour, which took in 20 dates celebrating 10 years at the top of the charts.

they didn’t reunite until Sarah’s cancer diagnosis brought them back together. Cheryl said of that reunion, “When we all got together at Soho Farmhouse, there were no tears. Actually, that’s not entirely true – there were tears but they were from laughter rather than sadness. It was a lovely trip away for us all, and Sarah was at her best.” As often happens with bands, the girls wanted to pursue different projects but they split on an absolute record-busting high – with 21 Top 10 singles and four No1s to be proud of. In 2012, they were also named the UK’s biggest-selling girl group of the 21st century, with over 4.3 million singles sales up to that point. OK! WORDS: LISA MARKS PHOTOS: SHUTTERSTOCK, ALAMY, GETTY

Before the tour they released new single Something New, which peaked at No2 in the charts, and announced their plans to split for good. “Ten years for a girl band is a long time. I wouldn’t change it for a thing but now it’s a new adventure,” Sarah said of the split. On going solo, she said, “When there’s five of you, it’s difficult to have a say in everything. I’m looking forward to having more control.” WWW.OK.CO.UK 23

STARRED IN CELEBRITY MASTERCHEF Sarah showed off her culinary skills as part of the star-studded line-up by whipping up her double carb dinner of turkey roulade with polenta chips and sweet potato wedges, followed by a sticky pear in ginger sauce. But it was Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt who went on to win the trophy. “I was so nervous,” Sarah revealed. “I usually cook in my kitchen on my own, with my music playing, patio doors open, experimenting as I go along. I’d never cooked to a time limit or with people watching. It was daunting, but I got used to it.”
JANUARY TOOK ON THE JUMP
Sarah was the sixth celebrity to pull out of the daring ski competition after rupturing a ligament in her leg. The singer trained for six weeks and reached the semi-final of the third series on the Austrian slopes, taking on the skeleton, snow cross, slalom and freestyle skiing challenges. “I’m pretty fearless. Oh man, I’ve missed touring. People are going to see a whole different side of me.”

RELEASED HER MEMOIR HEAR ME OUT Following her devastating breast cancer diagnosis in 2020, Sarah put pen to paper and shared the story of her life as a member of Girls Aloud and beyond. It’s a truthful insight into a life of fame and the challenges that come with it. “What started out a dream idea last summer is now a reality,” she exclaimed. At the end of the book, she wrote, “I’m just grateful to wake up every day and live my best life, because now I know just how precious it is.” OK! WORDS: KIRSTEN JONES PHOTOS: GETTY, REX/SHUTTERSTOCK

t the age when most little girls dreamt of becoming nurses or teachers, Sarah already had her sights set firmly on the stage. “I wanted to sing, and I wanted people to hear me sing,” she revealed in her autobiography, Hear Me Out. “At family gatherings, when I was little, I gave performances for my parents and anyone else I could get to watch.” Born in Ascot to John and Marie in 1981, Sarah grew up in a small house in Wraysbury, near Windsor. She had a half-brother, Dave, 16 years older than her, from her mother’s previous marriage. Sarah admitted that when they were younger, she didn’t have much in common with Dave, who later joined the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, where he was known as Sir Dangerous. Long before Sarah shot to stardom with Girls Aloud, her musician dad John was in the limelight, performing and singing with various bands. “One of the things we have in common is that we’ve both performed at The Royal Variety Performance and met the Queen,” she revealed. John’s influence led to music becoming a major part of Sarah’s life – and one of the few subjects she enjoyed at school. “What I loved most of all was playing Dad’s guitars,” she confessed. “He would restring them every weekend and let me strum away.” The self-confessed tomboy would be found climbing trees and searching for frogs as a youngster. Later she enjoyed horse riding, cricket and netball. “You wouldn’t catch me dead in a dress,” she recalled. Although happy singing and playing her guitar, her early years were also unconventional. She was diagnosed with ADHD when she was “tiny” and ended up going to seven different schools over the years which, she said, left her struggling to adapt to the new environments. “I wish I could tell you why I went to so many schools, but
the truth is I don’t know. What I do know is that I was not an easy child to manage, mainly because from a young age I had ADHD. I wasn’t given medication at first because everyone felt I was too young. I didn’t start taking medication until years later when I was in the band and struggling somewhat with the pressures of fame,” she said. Aged nine Sarah was sent to a boarding school, Thornton College in Buckinghamshire, which was run by nuns. “During my time there I began to have panic attacks and stopped eating properly because I was so anxious all the time,” she said. In Hear Me Out, she recalled the time when, still only nine, she

was kicked out of the school disco for copying the “grinding” moves from the film Dirty Dancing. On leaving Thornton College, she went to preparatory boarding school Godstowe in High Wycombe, where she enjoyed sports and, of course, music – but she developed a phobia. “Emetophobia is a fear of vomit, and in my case it was a fear of seeing another person throwing up,” she said. “It started when there was a horrible stomach bug going around the school. It got so bad that I couldn’t go to sleep without being curled up with my fingers in my ears, even when I was at home – just in case 7 heard someone throwing up.” Her secondary school years took her to the Catholic Salesian School in Chertsey,

where she was known as “the catalyst” by some members of staff. “As far as they were concerned, whenever trouble or mischief was going on, I would be found right in the midst of it,” she said. She was soon on the move again, this time to military boarding school Gordon’s in Woking before returning to Salesian. At this point her parents moved to Manchester and their marriage became strained. In 1998 John had an affair. Soon afterwards, Sarah’s grandmother died of cancer, and in a rift that lasted nearly two decades she became estranged from her father, who went on to have two sons from his second marriage. In Hear Me Out, published in March, Sarah revealed John had re-entered her life

a few years ago. But it was her mother, Marie, who was her rock during her battle with cancer. When Sarah was 15 she “gave up” school altogether and dropped out. “The school even got social services involved, but nothing seemed to work,” she said. So she went to North Cheshire Theatre School three days a week, and later Stockport College, where she studied hair and beauty. Keen to gain her independence, she soon started working. From being a waitress at Pizza Hut and working for a debt collection agency to delivering car parts in a van, Sarah tried her hand at just about everything. But she never let her dream of becoming a singer die and soon began performing in pubs, social clubs and at caravan parks. She was also – briefly – in a girlband called Project G and auditioned for talent-search shows Fame Academy and Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. Sarah revealed she had been “uncertain” about auditioning for the shows and “scared” to go through with them. We’re absolutely delighted that she did, though. OK! t was clear for all to see that Sarah and Tom Crane were mad about each other when they met and fell in love in 2007. After a few turbulent relationships, the star finally seemed settled, describing the DJ and producer in her memoir as “the love of my life” and her “best friend”. Her joy at finding her happy ever after was evident when she showed off their first home together to OK! readers in 2008. The smitten couple, who had renovated a Victorian school building, playfully teased each other by saying they still had to “christen” the rooms – and spoke of how they’d have to move again to get a garden when they started a family. Sarah knew she’d got a good ‘un with Tom, saying, “I think Tom’s the best one I’ve had – and the last one too!” Reminiscing about the relationship in her memoir Hear Me Out, Sarah said, “By the time I met Tom, I’d grown quite a bit. Perhaps achieving a certain level of success had given me the strength and self-belief to know what was acceptable

Sarah and Tom opened their house up to OK! and what wasn’t. I wasn’t prepared to let guys walk all over me any more, and that felt like a good place to be.” She said of their time together, “Tommy was only my third proper relationship but there was something different about us than there had been with the others. I think what I liked most about him was his sense of humour. He made me laugh, which I loved, and he always seemed to be happy.” They dated for four years and his proposal over Christmas 2010 came as they holidayed in the Maldives. However, in 2011 Tom left her, six months before their big day, leaving Sarah devastated. She described the later days of the relationship as “turbulent”, but said she’d still wondered about “what might have been”. Sarah said, “He wanted me to be better and kinder to myself. I think that me being me, in the industry I was in, pulled us apart in the end. I was just 34
too much for him to handle, and so I lost the love of my life. And my best friend... I’ve never stopped blaming myself. Losing him was one of the biggest mistakes of my life.” In 2017, Sarah appeared in Celebrity Big Brother and before emerging as the reality

show’s winner she opened up to housemates about the relationship. “Six months before I was due to get married, it all just tumbled around me,” she said, before adding that she hadn’t given up on finding love. “I can’t wait to settle down and have a family,” she told Mob Wives star Marissa Jade. Before Tom, Sarah’s first love was singer Mikey Green, who she met on Popstars: The Rivals. She was with him from 2002 to 2005 and described their relationship at the time as being like “two peas in a pod”. In 2005, Sarah met Calum Best, the son of footie icon George Best, and she dated him for eight months before she was wooed by Hollywood actor Stephen Dorff. Following her split from Tom, Sarah dated DJ Mark Foster for almost two years, until 2014. While on CBB in 2017 she met US reality TV star Chad Johnson and they were believed to have dated for three months. OK! WORDS: LISA MARKS PHOTOS: SVEN ARNSTEIN, GETTY

‘I PLAYED UP TO A CARICATURE’ WE MAY HAVE KNOWN HER AS A PARTY-LOVING DJ AND POP STAR BUT BEHIND CLOSED DOORS SARAH LOVED THE SIMPLER THINGS IN LIFE
B
ack in the beginning, Sarah Harding was often glammed up to the nines on her way to an event or party. But that was only one very small part of the star’s life. In fact, back in 2017 she told OK! that when the band split she saw it as her chance to live a life that was a lot quieter and away from prying eyes. “I’ve grown up now and moved forward,” she said. “I’ve been very private since the band split. I sort of duck in and out of London. I love the country life and being with my animals. I just prefer peace and quiet. It’s all part of growing up.” She added, “At the end of the day, I love to entertain. I’m a
performer. Of course I love being around people, but I prefer it when it’s on my terms. “I like to duck in and out and when I’m in, then I might be the life and soul. But it’s nice to just go home again, be with my dogs [French bulldogs Claude and Corker], put the fire on and watch the movie channel. And I love cooking. I find it therapeutic. I did it on MasterChef – I called it ManicChef! I can throw things together and I have a penchant for knowing what goes with what. “I still get portrayed as that girl from the band who was always hyped up to be something I wasn’t. In Girls Aloud, I played a character. I was the lairy one,

the rock and roller. I played up to that because it was a caricature.” The star added to this in her memoir, Hear Me Out, talking about how she got a bit lost along the way, but found herself again. “There is most definitely that fun, crazy party girl in me – there always was,” she said. “It was the other Sarah – the one who liked curling up at home with her dog and a good book; the one who enjoyed cooking a roast dinner for her
‘LIVING IN THE COUNTRY IS GREAT – I HAVE MORE PRIVACY’ friends; the one who liked spending nights alone, writing songs and making music – who got lost.” When Sarah was propelled into the limelight she came across as hugely independent and ambitious but, while seemingly outgoing and bubbly, she lacked confidence. “One of the things I struggled with was the idea of ‘fame’. I know it’s many people’s dream to 38

achieve fame, but once I’d achieved it, I realised it wasn’t really mine,” she said. And of her well-documented partying she added, “There were undoubtedly a few nights when I overdid it and ended up needing assistance to get out of a club and into the sanctuary of a waiting car. I do recall being helped down the staircase of one particular club, and on that occasion I was like Bambi on ice – not a good look, for sure.” In 2008 she swapped London for the Buckinghamshire countryside. Around the same time her love life was on the up after she met DJ and producer Tom Crane. Opening up about her life when they were together, she said, “I spend most of my nights at home in front of the TV with a log fire and my animals. Living in the country is great because I have a lot more privacy and my outdoorsy life. It’s when I go into London my guard goes up.” And she once said, “I sound like an old granny, but I’ve really got into gardening and I’ve been growing my own veggies. I’ve bought these old barrels and I grow organic fruit and veg in them. Garlic, onions, lettuce, carrots, strawberries, raspberries – the lot.” Sarah was clearly a woman with a lot
Sarah liked the privacy of living in the country
‘I’D LIKE TO SEE EVERYONE ONE LAST TIME – TO SAY THANK YOU AND GOODBYE’ to give and after seeing bandmates Cheryl, Kimberley Walsh and Nadine Coyle become mothers, having her own children seemed like a natural next step. Unfortunately, her cancer robbed her of the chance and she was keenly aware of that when she wrote, “It might seem odd to worry about not having children when I don’t even know how much of a life I have left, but it’s there. Even if my prognosis was better, it still wouldn’t be on the cards because of all the chemotherapy I’ve had. It’s making me cry just thinking about it.” But one thing’s for certain, Sarah was happy in her life – and it was her pets that really cemented the country living she so clearly adored. “I’m a mum to five kids,” she said at an event in 2015. “I’ve got two dogs, two cats and a vegetable patch.” However, never one to say no to a good knees-up, she did detail in her book how she would have loved one last big party. “What I’d really like to do is to see everyone – all my friends, all together,” she said. “One last time… as a way to say thank you and goodbye.” OK!

HEALTH IS A PRIORITY
earing the news of Sarah Harding’s death really hit home for me. It’s so incredibly sad. It makes you worry as she was so young, and it reminds us all to check ourselves regularly. It must have been so worrying that her cancer was diagnosed during the pandemic, when the NHS was very stretched and services were delayed. Most people are concerned about their health and that’s bound to be heightened during a pandemic. The sad thing is, I’m sure many people didn’t book an appointment for something that was worrying them because they didn’t want to be a burden or risk being in hospital and potentially catching Covid. But we all need to realise that our health is a priority and it’s so important to get checked out if we have a concern.
JUGGLING ACT
ast week was so busy for me with work and I really felt the strain of being a single parent. The juggling act is relentless. It’s not just school forms and trips, play dates and after-school a activities, it’s also ensuring you’re there ffor your children day-to-day. The reality is, we can’t put so much p pressure on ourselves. What’s important iis we love our children. We always strive tto try our best and that’s what I told m myself in my moment of chaos.

ANOTHER LOCKDOWN?
here were reports of plans for another lockdown in October, which the government has now denied. The thing is, we’ve come so far as a country, so will it be worth it to lock everyone down again? A lot of people are contracting the virus, but hopefully there are fewer deaths now. And with so many people now fully vaccinated, you’d hope we wouldn’t need another lockdown. There are worries about what will happen at Christmas, but all our kids have gone back to school and people have been able to go on their summer holidays. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. OK!

t’s always one of the biggest nights in the showbiz calendar, but after a year’s absence, the National Television Awards came back stronger than ever. This Morning‘s Holly Willoughby and Rochelle Humes and presenters Davina McCall and Laura Whitmore were among the stars on the red carpet at the ceremony, hosted for the first time by comedian Joel Dommett and sponsored by OK!. And to celebrate the return of awards season, they’d pulled out all the stops in the glam stakes for the event at London’s O2 Arena. But undoubtedly, the night belonged to Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway, who moved the star-studded audience to tears and received a standing ovation on accepting her award for Finding Derek in the new category of Authored Documentary. Dedicating her win to her husband, Derek Draper, who is still fighting the devastating

I really didn’t think I’d win – but, unfortunately, I can’t stay late because I’ve got to be up for work in the morning. I wasn’t even sure I was going to come. It felt a strange time to be leaving the family, and I’ve been feeling quite sad about the situation with Derek. “But even on the way in, there was a woman called Angela and her On FaceTime with Derek from the awards

I don’t know how much he will have been able to see, or been able to be awake for, but I know he’ll know.” Other big wins of the night included Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who picked up the gong for TV Presenter for a history-making 20th year – something they said they’d never have predicted. “We won our first award when Tony Blair was prime minister and Newcastle United had qualified ns Leag gue. for the Champions League. It’s a long time,” said Ant, 45. “It means the absolute world.” The pair shared their victory with their wives, Anne-Marie Corbett and Ali Astall. It was Ant’s first red-carpet event since tying the knot with Anne-Marie in August. However, Ant and Dec admitted they wouldn’t be partying all night in the way they have in previous years. Dec, 45, who is dad to threeyear-old Isla,
quipped, “I’m going to go home and get to sleep because I know that at about 6.45am I’ll hear a little voice saying, ‘Daddy, I’m awake.’” The same can’t be said for This Morning pair – and notorious party animals – Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. The ITV show continued its winning streak in the Daytime category and Phil credited co-host and best friend Holly with getting him through the last year and a half, both on-screen and off. “My best friend was quite incredible,” said Phil, 59, of his 40-year-old co-host. “We sat in our make-up room every morning, just Holly Willoughby shared this selfie of the team

Phil then continued the party at exclusive private members’ club Shoreditch House. Stars of Gogglebox were also toasting success, with Tom and Julie Malone and siblings Pete and Sophie Sandiford clutching glasses of champagne as the show was named best Factual series. There were further reasons to celebrate, too, as Pete announced exclusively to OK! he’d recently married his love, Paige Yeomans – and become a father for the first time. 52

I slept on the train here – got suitcases under my eyes – you just got me at a good time now.” Elsewhere, Line Of Duty actor Martin Compston, who played Steve Arnott, couldn’t wipe the smile from his face as he celebrated the juggernaut show’s double win with the OK! team. I need someone who’s going to be patient with me, because I think something like this can bring out your fears and insecurities. If I’m like, “Oh my gosh, I can’t learn it,” I need them to say, “Listen, we’ve got to do this.” Is there any sort of music you’d particularly like to dance to? A little bit of reggae, a little bit of bashment…
On Loose Women with Christine Lampard, Linda Robson and Denise Welch
How did your family react? They were like, “Strictly Come Dancing – as in on the BBC, live, in front of millions of people?” They’re so excited and supportive. I think it’s gonna be a very emotional journey.
How do you feel about donning those gorgeous costumes? I’m very excited. The heels... I’m a bit like, “How many inches class as a heel?” I’m gonna keep it 100% real. I cannot walk in heels. I can dance in them on a Friday night with my girls after a couple glasses of prosecco, but in a professional capacity… We’ll have to see how that works.
Will your kids be watching? They will. My daughter’s coming to the studio but my son is too young. He’s a bit upset, but he will be at home, cheerleading.
Are you looking forward to getting Strictly glammed up? I’m ready! I want to see how glam they can go. I’m looking forward to the wigs, the
Do you have any signature dance moves of your own? I’ve got the mum dancing and Caribbean dance moves down. As long as I can find the beat, I’m good. Have there been any previous contestants you would like to emulate? I never really compare myself to anybody else. I’m just going to try and be the best I can be. We understand a WhatsApp group has been set up for this year’s contestants... I’m one of those bad ones in the group, where it takes me a while to get back to people. But when I’m in it, I’m in it for five minutes strong. Then I’ll just disappear for another three weeks…

‘I’M THE KING OF THE DAD DANCE’ MCFLY’S TOM FLETCHER ON TAKING THE BATON FROM BANDMATE HARRY JUDD AND WHY SON BUZZ WILL BE HIS BIGGEST FAN What made you want to take part? Secretly, somewhere deep down, I’ve wanted to do it since my bandmate Harry did it 10 years ago. But life gets in the way and this year just felt right. And my eldest son, Buzz, has been such a huge fan of Strictly over the last couple of years. So he must be thrilled... Yeah, he’s really invested. When Chris Ramsay was in it a couple of years ago, d he cried his eyes out when he got voted off. So when they asked if I’d do it, I thought, “My son would love that.” ? Are you excited about the makeover? n. Yes. I’m in desperate need of a spray tan. That’s part of the experience and I’m looking forward to embracing it. Harry won the show in 2011. Does that pile on the pressure? Strictly’s been a part of McFly’s life – and our history. It was an amazing time for the band when he won. It had been his thing for a while, so I did feel like there’d be a little bit of pressure for me to go far. But after 10 years, I just want to have a fun experience. You only get to do Strictly once, so I want to have the best time and not worry about Harry Judd. What advice has Harry given you – if any? I can’t shut him up about Strictly! But I don’t know if I should trust his advice or if he’s secretly trying to steer me in the wrong direction, because he’s quite competitive. Will you be practising your routines at home with your wife Giovanna? Well, my kids get embarrassed. I’ve tried doing a bit of dancing around the house and they don’t want to watch. It’s like watching your parents kiss. Watching me dance, they say, “That’s so gross, Dad.” I’m the king of the dad dance.

‘I’M GOING TO EMBRACE ALL THE SEQUINS’ TIKTOK AND TV STAR TILLY RAMSAY IS LOOKING FORWARD TO DITCHING HER TRACKSUIT AND REVEALS WHY DAD GORDON WON’T BE STEPS FOLLOWING IN HER FOOTSTEPS Hi Tilly. How would you rate your dancing skills? Very, very low! A two out of 10, to be honest. Have your TikTok dances helped you to prepare for this? TikTok’s a very different style of dancing. Maybe it’s helped me prepare in terms of learning a routine, but they’re only short clips and they’re not live, so you can do them as many times as you need to. What are you looking for in a dance partner? Someone who’s happy to have fun, as well as teach and learn. But I think all the professionals will be great, so I’m happy to be with anyone.

EX-EASTENDERS ACTRESS NINA WADIA What is your biggest challenge likely to be? My stamina. I’ve been inactive during the pandemic. I’ve been walking, but not really exercising, so that’s going to be the toughest challenge for me. Are your family excited about watching you? My daughter’s very excited. My son told me not to embarrass him. And my husband said he doesn’t want to sit through a long time of filming, so I can give his ticket elsewhere!
OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST ADAM PEATY Tell us why you signed up… It started off as a joke with my partner, Eiri, and became more and more serious. So as the talks went on, I said, “Why not?” How do you feel about being Strictly-fied? Honestly, I can’t wait. I spend my whole life in swimsuits and if I’m not doing that, it’s photoshoots when I’m covered in oil. Now I get to change the oil to glitter. 64
SPORTS PUNDIT AND FORMER RUGBY UNION PLAYER UGO MONYE How have people reacted to you taking part in Strictly? Initially it was only my wife who knew. She was really, really excited and then I rang my mum, who was buzzing. It’s also my mother-in-law’s favourite show on telly – and my mates are all really proud of me, which has been great. We hear you’re loving the costumes… You’ll be seeing my belly button most weeks. Costume is such a big part of the dance and the outfits reflect that, so I’ll welcome it.
FORMER GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF WINNER JOHN WHAITE Have you had any previous dance experience? Between the ages of 10 and 14 I did ballet, modern and tap. So I may have a few dancing bones in my body, but I’m not necessarily good rhythmically. Has anybody who has already appeared on the show offered you advice? Michelle Visage texted me and said to start stretching immediately. Gemma Atkinson said, “It’s going to be the best thing you’ll ever do so enjoy every minute.”
DRAGONS’ DEN INVESTOR SARA DAVIES What made you want to take part? It’s a dream I’ve had my whole life. When I got on the panel of Dragons’ Den alongside Deborah Meaden, she’d talk about it all the time, and people would say, “You might be asked to go on Strictly next.” And now here we are! Do you have any previous experience of dancing? I’m absolutely brilliant once I’ve had a couple of drinks on a Saturday night in the pub, or at a wedding. But I don’t have any official moves. I’m just very good at the big fish, little fish, cardboard box…
TELEVISION AND FILM ACTOR GREG WISE You’re taking part for a very touching reason… I’m doing it for my lovely sister, a disco diva queen goddess on the dance floor, who died almost exactly five years to the day to when I’m going to start this, so she’s prodding me hugely. Is there anyone you’ve particularly loved from past series? Bill Bailey. He’s a champ. His dance to Rapper’s Delight was extraordinary. He’s my talisman. If Bill, who put the work in with Oti [Mabuse], can get through a few weeks, then so can I. WWW.OK.CO.UK 65
EASTENDERS ACTRESS ROSE AYLING-ELLIS What are you looking for in a dance partner? Someone who can communicate well. In sign language we speak very literally, so I need someone who understands that. I’m a good student, but I need someone who will push me. Have your EastEnders’ colleagues been giving you any tips? Both Emma Barton and Danny Dyer said to just be myself.
CBBC PRESENTER RHYS STEPHENSON Congratulations on Strictly. Have you been given any advice about taking part? I spoke to Karim [Zeroual, fellow CBBC presenter] and Joe Sugg. They both made it to the finals – so fingers crossed. They said, “Just enjoy it, but you cannot slack off in your training.” Who do you think is likely to be your biggest competitor? Adam will be good competition, as he has the mentality of an Olympian. And AJ’s energy is next level. She’s like the Duracell Bunny!
BBC BREAKFAST PRESENTER DAN WALKER What made you decide to take part in this year’s show? My kids. They said if you get asked to do Strictly, please say yes. So I said yes. How do you feel about being Strictly-fied? My normal dress for BBC Breakfast is quite casual, with a suit and tie, so the wardrobe here will definitely be different. There aren’t many occasions in life where you get to wear white trousers.
66
COMEDIAN ROBERT WEBB Have you had any previous dancing experience? I did Let’s Dance For Comic Relief in 2009, where I recreated the famous dance scene from Flashdance. That was fun, but really hard. I was utterly terrified beyond belief. I’m hoping it won’t be as bad this time as I’ll have longer to rehearse – and a partner. W What are you looking for in a partner? Sh got to be patient and have fabulous She’s fo forgiveness because I’m a pretty slow learner. On I’ve got it, I usually make a reasonable Once att attempt to sell it, but it takes a while for me to get it.
HOLLYOAKS AND FORMER CORONATION STREET ACTRESS KATIE MCGLYNN
TV PRESENTER AJ ODUDU How have people reacted to you appearing on Strictly? My friends and family were so shocked. Firstly, because I was able to keep a secret that long. Secondly, they were so excited that I was doing it in the first place. I can’t wait to be a part of Strictly history. Has anyone given you any advice? My mum’s advice was just, “Go, go, go!” She wants me to be confident, as she knows I get really nervous.
What is your take on being Strictly-fied? I’m so excited, because day-to-day I’m a bit of a tomboy. I like to be comfortable. But then, on a Saturday night out with the girls, I love getting glammed up, so this is a dream come true. What have you been doing to prepare yourself for the show? I’ve been doing Zumba. I know it’s not the same, but that’s been to try and get into the mindset of learning routines. I’ve also been training quite a lot with my personal trainer – just trying to get fit and eat well, really. OK! STRICTLY COME DANCING, SATURDAY, 7.45PM, BBC ONE WORDS CHLOE ALEXANDROU & RIANNE ISON

MATT FINALLY GETS HIS GIRL!
ormer EastEnders star MATT DI ANGELO finally got to marry his long-term partner Sophia Perry last week, in a ceremony at the Grosvenor Chapel in London, followed by a reception at swanky hotel The Dorchester. The couple, who got together seven years ago, were forced to postpone their original plans due to the pandemic, with wedding planner Sophia referring to the uncertainty as a “rollercoaster”. The bride looked stunning in a backless gown by Ersa Atelier, and Matt scrubbed up nicely in a tux, which he paired with white trainers. Posting a picture of the pair dancing at the reception, the actor quipped, “Well…that escalated quickly.” Matt’s former co-stars were quick to congratulate him, with LOUISA LYTTON saying, “Gorgeous congratulations guys,” and RITA SIMONS gushing, “Congratulations you beautiful pair! I’m so gutted I couldn’t be there!”

JESY AND HARRY’S PDA
J
ESY NELSON has been spotted with her boyfriend HARRY JAMES. The pair recently rekindled their romance and seemed unable to keep their hands off each other. The 30-yearold singer and fellow musician Harry, 27, were seen enjoying time together in LA before the former Little Mix star throws herself into her solo career, with her first single expected to launch this month.
Jesy looked sensational in a black bra top and matching shorts, and was very tactile with Harry as they waited to be served at Urth Caffé in West Hollywood. The pair first dated in 2017, but broke off their romance after 16 months. They reportedly bonded once again on a holiday to the Caribbean, with a source saying they’ve “both matured” and get on “like a house on fire”.

he Government is planning to increase the storage time for frozen eggs, sperm and embryos from 10 years to 55 years. I think this is a really good move and will provide people with more choice over their fertility. There are all sorts of reasons why people freeze their eggs or sperm. It could be because of upcoming surgery, or women may be unable to become pregnant for a variety of reasons. To me, 10 years was a rather short period of time – especially if you freeze your eggs, sperm or embryos at a young age. Although 55 years is a big leap, I don’t think it’s a bad thing as it means everyone is given a choice about their family planning, no matter what their age is. OK!

ealth minister Nadine Dorries has announced that Botox treatments will be banned for under 18s after 41,000 cosmetic procedures were carried out on people under 18 last year. This is a shocking statistic. Any reputable clinic should take your details during the consultation including your age, medical history and allergies before deciding whether cosmetic treatment is suitable. Botox requires a prescription that is specific to the individual, and part of writing a prescription includes documenting the person’s age. Botox can be used to treat medical conditions like excessive sweating, but it is very unusual for it to be warranted for cosmetic reasons for someone in their teens. I think pressure from TV and social media may be pushing teens

‘WORKING WITH MY KIDS WAS MY FAVOURITE PART’ ABBEY CLANCY CHATS ABOUT AUTUMN/WINTER STAPLES MODELLING WITH HER CHILDREN LIBERTY AND JOHNNY HOW SHE WEARS DENIM AND HER NEW COLLABORATION WITH F&F

bbey Clancy is one busy lady, juggling a successful modelling and presenting career and being a parent-of-four with her husband, former footballer Peter Crouch. In addition to her new F&F womenswear denim edit, she has added another string to her bow, curating a denim and autumn/ winter kidswear edit for F&F, which is shaping up to be a match made in heaven. Abbey is full of enthusiasm for the range, which focuses on practicality and style. Here, the 35-year-old tells us about her favourite pieces, what it was like being on set with two of her children – Liberty, six, and Johnny, three – her key wardrobe staples and being more sustainable with her fashion choices… Hi Abbey. Tell us about your edit with F&F… It includes all my favourite fits, from classic skinny jeans to 1990s straight leg and tapered mom jeans. My go-to outfit is usually jeans and a top, so having a variety of styles and fits is important to me. I also got to work closely with F&F so you get to see how I personally style each look. I can’t believe how great the quality is at such an affordable price. The entire collection is

weekly shop and end up leaving with a new wardrobe. Being able to work with my kids, Liberty and Johnny, on this campaign was my favourite part and will always be such a lovely memory. They’re also modelling the F&F kids’ autumn/winter collection, including
denim pieces. I love all the images of them together – they had so much fun. Do you have a favourite pair of jeans? My favourite are the contour jeans – they’re so comfortable and flattering for every shape. I have them in every colour – black, charcoal and blue. A good pair of skinny jeans is an important wardrobe staple. On a normal day I like to wear a plain T-shirt and layer with my favourite F&F shacket or pair with heels for a more dressed-up look. What are the autumn/winter staples that you think every woman should have? A great pair of jeans, a stylish, versatile coat suitable for any occasion and a Chelsea or heeled boot. I like to mix and match supermarket and high street fashion with designer clothing. I think people can relate to that. Fashion doesn’t have to cost the earth.
Abbey wears: Coat £39 Knitted vest £14 Jeans £22 Liberty wears: Cardie from £10 Dress from £14 Boots £16
Are your older children into fashion like you are? Sophia, my eldest, is now 10 and she is starting to form her own style which is cool to see. Liberty is only six and still so young, but she loves dressing like me. Her favourite piece from this collection is the denim dress and cardie – it’s one of mine, too. We have created some really cute mini-me looks as part of this edit. What piece of fashion advice would you have given yourself 10 years ago? I would tell my younger self to always trust my instincts.
How was it being on set and shooting with two of your children? Being a mum-of-four, every day is full-on! This shoot was super relaxed and we got to shoot in the countryside, so the children were able to run around and play all day. They had so much fun – that’s the most important thing to me. It’s always special to be able to share an aspect of your life with your children. Abbey wears: Shacket £29 Has your style changed Top £14 since before the pandemic? Jeans £22 My style hasn’t really changed but I’d say I’m more about Liberty wears: investing in staple pieces Shacket from £18 that I really love and feel Rollneck from £6 comfortable in – I try to be Skirt from £12 more sustainable where I can. (part of a set) Boots £19 If you’re having a bad day, do you have an outfit you put on which instantly gives you a confidence boost? I’m most confident when I feel at my best. Something simple like putting on a great fitting pair of jeans gives me a confidence boost. The great thing about this edit is that there are so many styles to choose from and they’re so affordable. Autumn sun
As someone who follows lingering rays of sunshine around like a cat in search of a good place to snooze, I’m in love with Lancôme’s Idôle Aura EDP, from £50. It’s added a warm, sun-kissed dimension to the lush floral original, with notes of sea salt and vanilla that are already making me google, “Where’s still warm in October?”

Yes, but only Do I have a moody look in my eye? Yes in a good way. I’m using NudeStix Dark Romantics Kit, which promises a look that’s “minimalistic and moody”. The six matte eyeshadow crayons are certainly minimalistic in terms of the skills required – think super-easy smoky eyes smudged on with a fingertip – and although the kit costs £58, the pencils together are worth £120.

Soothe operator I’ve just renewed my gym membership, and now my muscles are bleating in protest. I’m doing my best to muffle them under a thick, bubbly layer of Dr Teal’s new Hemp Seed Oil Epsom Salts Foaming Bath, £7.99. This combines the classic muscle-soothing salts with anti-inflammatory hemp and a fragrant dash of thyme and bergamot essential oils. Hopefully by next week I won’t still be uttering achy, old-person groans as I sink into the water.

HEALTH&FITNESS FOLIC FOOD FACTS 1. Kerry Beeson, nutritional therapist at Optibac Probiotics says, “Factors affecting folate absorption in the body include excess alcohol and medications such as methotrexate, oral contraceptives, or antacids. Folate is typically absorbed in the small intestine, so poor gut health is important but, thankfully, many folate-rich foods contain natural prebiotics.” 2. Hussain Abdeh advises always to read the food labels. “Folic acid is occasionally added to other forms of food. Called ‘fortified foods’ they will always be labelled and include bread, pasta, cereals, grains and flour.” 3. Rohini Bajekal, a plant-based nutritionist suggests restricting ultra-processed foods, sugar-sweetened drinks and processed meats. “If you can’t say no to a curry, have brown rice and ensure your meal is packed with folate rich lentils and spinach,” she says. “Or try an Asian-style curry with tofu, edamame beans, broccoli, pak choi and cabbage. If you love pizza, add a folate-rich side salad of rocket leaves, avocado, asparagus and cherry tomatoes.”

Parmesan cheese ● 2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley ● 110g cooked mussels, shelled ● 110g cooked prawns, peeled ● ½ can chopped anchovies, 4 fillets (optional) ● Melted butter, for brushing ● Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the mashed potatoes ● 900g unpeeled potatoes, scrubbed well ● 300ml whole milk ● 1-2 organic, free-range egg yolks ● 25-50g butter For the roux ● 10g softened butter ● 10g plain flour
1. Put the potatoes into a saucepan of cold water, add a good pinch of salt and bring to the boil. When the potatoes are half-cooked after about 15 minutes, strain off two-thirds of the water, put the lid back on the saucepan, place it over a gentle heat and steam for 5-6 minutes, until cooked. Peel immediately by pulling off the skins, then put the potatoes in a bowl and beat or mash by hand. 2. Bring the milk to the boil. Beat the eggs into the hot mashed potatoes and add enough boiling, creamy milk to mix to a soft, light consistency, then beat in the butter – the amount you use depends on how rich you like your potatoes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 3. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. 4. Melt the butter over a low-medium heat to make a roux. Add the flour, stir and cook over a medium heat until it becomes the consistency of wet sand. Stir and cook for about 2 minutes. 5. Skin the fish and cut into 4-6 portions. Season well with salt and pepper. Lay the pieces of fish in a lightly buttered 26cm sauté pan and cover with the milk. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 4-5 minutes, until the fish has changed from translucent to opaque. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fish to a plate. 6. Bring the milk back to the boil and whisk in enough roux to thicken the sauce to a light coating consistency. Stir in the mustard, cheese and parsley, then season to taste. 7. Add the cooked fish, most of the mussels and prawns and the anchovies, if using, and stir gently to coat with the sauce. Transfer carefully to a serving dish or dishes. 8. Spoon a layer of mashed potato on top of each one and tuck the reserved prawns and mussels into the topping. 9. Bake for 15-20 minutes until they are bubbling and then serve.

This pastry needs to be chilled for at least 2 hours, otherwise it is difficult to handle – better still, make it the day before. 3. BRAVE NEW WOLD IDEAL FOR NATURE LOVERS AND FOOD FANS LINCOLNSHIRE IS ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS
Luxurious homes from home at The Old Granary
WHY GO THERE?
If you’ve never heard of the Lincolnshire Wolds in the East Midlands – or if you have, but it hasn’t made it on to your must-do list – you’re not alone. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this lush slice of unspoilt landscape is incredibly hush-hush. But with quaint towns teeming with character, lovely walks and gastro hot spots, it thoroughly deserves recognition. A road trip is the best way to take in the stunning views and expansive skies. Park up at one of the many hiking trails and set off into the wilds for a perfect antidote to modern life. There are some gorgeous beaches in the locality, too, including the popular sands of Skegness and Mablethorpe. All in all, it’s a great destination for families and couples foregoing foreign travel in favour of a UK destination. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT LINCSWOLDS.ORG.UK
WHERE TO STAY Rustic steps lead to the beach at Mablethorpe
After a day braving the elements, nothing beats unwinding in luxury. But ditch any ideas of fancy hotels in favour of paradise on a potato farm. The Old Granary in Owmby is a converted barn housing a trio of modern holiday cottages – a drop of decadence on a working farm. Run by twins Clare and Louise, the stylish boltholes have been finished to a high standard and decorated in a palette of soothing coastal colours. Single-bedroom options The Mill and The Smithy have the most Instagrammable bathrooms we’ve ever seen, while The Gables has two double bedrooms and a stunning entrance. Of course, this level of rustic charm comes with the caveat that you’ll need a set of wheels. So bear it in mind when booking. FROM £90 TO £150 A NIGHT, THEOLDGRANARYLINCOLNSHIRE.CO.UK

WHAT TO DO
The Lincolnshire Wolds is a walkers’ paradise. Head for the picturesque Willingham Woods where you’ll discover numerous pathways snaking through the trees. The Viking Way, another fantastic route, is just five minutes on foot from The Old Granary. With the remains of 9th century buildings dotted around, the area is perfect for history lovers and gives a glimpse into the days of the Norse invaders. The region may be small, but some perfectly formed towns should be on your itinerary. Our favourite was the market town of Louth. Bubbling with character and charm, it’s famous for its independent businesses, including Off The Beaten Tracks, one of the last independent record shops in the county, antique shops, and Hairy Biker-approved hot spot The Cheese Shop. Setting your sights on the coast? Visit bird-watchers’ haven Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve or stop for a breather on the golden sands of Anderby Creek Beach and embrace the awe-inspiring St James Church, power of the Louth, is noted for North Sea. its tall steeple FOR MORE INFORMATION, SEE OFFTHEBEATENTRACKS.CO.UK; THECHEESESHOPLOUTH.CO.UK
WHERE TO EAT
Leave any worries about your waistline at the border. With all that walking, you’ll need to replenish your energy. At the Cross Keys Inn, an unassuming hostelry in the pretty village of Grasby, just a short stroll from The Old Granary, pub grub has reached a whole new level. Here, beautifully presented plates of flavoursome fresh produce are crying out to be photographed. The fillet steak got a 10/10 from us, and the brisket-stuffed Yorkshire puddings are to die for. You can’t visit Pub grub Lincolnshire without gets a sampling some of the makeover sausages – unless you’re veggie or vegan – and The Sali in Nettleton offers brilliant bangers and mash with a side of excellent hospitality from lovely landlady Jo. Dine-out options are just as attractive. After a walk in the wolds, treat yourself to a takeaway from the Mumbai Lounge in Brigg. It’s excellent for curry lovers. OK! ack on our screens in Changing Rooms, Jordan Cluroe e and Russell Whitehead from 2LG Studio have been busy working their magic on a one-bedroom show home at The Boulevard in Southwark, commissioned by Latimer Homes. MID-CENTURY BEDSIDE TABLE Swoon £169
Changing your room is easy 1
First of all, start with a clean, flat, blemish-free wall. If there are any lumps and bumps, sand them down and fill any holes with all-purpose filler, available from any DIY store. Choose your paint colours. A darker and lighter tone of the same colour will give that sophisticated look. Tiamat and Sephal from Graham & Brown are a close match to 2LG’s chosen hues. Start by measuring and marking out equal widths for your stripes. Remember the wider the stripes, the easier they are to paint – they’ll also have more impact. Use a long rule and a spirit level to get the lines straight, and draw them onto the wall in pencil. Put the masking tape against the pencil lines down the wall, taking the tape onto the ceiling and skirting board. Then go over the tape with a wallpaper seam roller to make sure there are no air

LIFELESSONS NICK GRIMSHAW REVEALS HOW HIS NICKNAME ‘GRIMMY’ FIRST BEGAN AND WHY HE IS TRYING TO BE MORE LIKE HIS PAL AND TRUE INSPIRATION ANNIE MAC My nickname is… Grimmy. But everyone knows that! My brother was called Grimmy for a while, and everyone else in my family. When I was growing up, all of my mum and dad’s friends would call us The Grimmys, so we all just got called it. The biggest challenge in my life so far was… going to Namibia and trekking through the desert for Sport Relief last year.
myself. You can’t go wrong with those two Fs. One thing I was never prepared for in life was… when I was asked to present the Radio 1 Breakfast show. I was called into a meeting and I thought I was being fired, when actually they asked, “Do you want to do the Breakfast show?” I was not prepared for that. It was a bit of a shocker. It was 9am and my boss wanted to see me so I thought the worst.
‘YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH FRIENDS AND FOOD’
My idea of a perfect evening would be… staying in! Last night we stayed in and I cooked a mega meal from Gousto. I honestly felt like a chef. I enjoy hanging out with my family and having nice food. The thing that cheers me up the most is... friends and food. They’re my two fail-safe options when I’m not feeling
My childhood ambition was to… work in radio. True story. The best thing my parents have taught me is… my dad used to say to me, “A fool and his money are soon parted.” I’ve always liked that. The person who inspires me the most is… Annie Mac. She is someone who does what she wants. When she wants to do something, she figures out how to achieve it. I think she’s very positive, very driven and focused. Everything I’m attempting to be. The most expensive thing I’ve ever splashed out on is… my dining table. It’s a sculpture slash table. When anyone comes round to my house, they think it’s a chair and they try to sit on it. OK!
