Welcome to the 42nd edition of the Craic in Galway magazine. Galway is the home of the arts, of music, theatre, film, and it is this cultural beating heart that makes our city so vibrant. A large part of our unique atmosphere is captured on the streets of the city, through buskers and performers who light up the day, and night, with their theatrics. Yet new regulations are now being considered by the city council and it is important for you to have your say. Find out how between the pages of our little but large magazine. Our artistic nature has been heralded by non other than the video game development sector, who believe the two go hand in hand, and want to make Galway the hub of this creative, and technical, industry. According to Pulse College, Galway should be leading the way when it comes to game design, thanks to our ability to nurture all things creative and colourful. Trad musician, Tommy McCarthy, is soon to undertake a tour of Australia with his talented family - as they follow in the musical footprint of his father, who handed down his love of trad to the generations. And even Jameson are celebrating all things crafty - inspired by the whiskey itself. They will host Donegal tweed makers, Molloy and Sons, at a unique Galway event, with their whiskey inspired blanket. Now who could say no to that. Textiles is also a family tradition for the Molloys, handed down across centuries from a hill in Ardara. Both Dara Kelly and I speak about our love of dance, hers by doing and mine by watching - Dance Moms. I know, its a secret I have been withholding until now. You’ll find it all here, along with your daily two week diary, news, views, photos and everything else in between.

Happy Reading, Sure it’s all a bit of craic!

All The Time in The World

I

t’s been 20 years since NUIG’s Literary and Debating Society broke the record for the world’s longest debate in 1995. To celebrate, they will reunite on Friday, February 27th in the College Bar to toast the talented speakers who made it through the marathon stretch, which had them talking around the clock, 24-7, on the topic ‘That This House Has All The Time In The World’. The undertaking began at 8pm on January 31st, 1995 and continued right through until 8pm on February 28th. During the day, the proceedings took place at the end of Smokey Joes on campus and at night, moved to one of the smaller rooms off the concourse. It was a mammoth task, requiring an officially designated speaker, chairperson and recording secretary at all times, along with

the support of night time security. The idea for the record breaker was first mooted by the then society auditor, John Sweeney, as part of the University’s 150th year. “We spoke on everything from serious topics such as the Lansdowne Road riots, divorce and abortion to the trivial, from WWF wrestling to ornamental fish!” explains one of the original members, Aidan Boyce, who met his wife Catherine during the event.

“Initially we asked people to sign up for specific time slots, but that went by the wayside fairly quickly as we just kept talking.,” he says. “We just got sucked into it and there was never a point where no-one was willing to speak. The speaker would wear a suit jacket, which was passed on to the next speaker, and by the end it was fairly manky! “It was all consuming and it was easy to lose yourself to the event. We were there night and day and I have an incredible fondness for it. The place was thick with smoke and we broke the record by a good few days. We did it for exactly 28 days and there were big celebrations at the end. In all, about 20-30 people were heavily involved. There were cheers when we finished summing up the pros

and cons of the debate and there was relief also that nothing had gone wrong. “By then, we were celebrities in our own mind and we made a good few friends out of it. It was such an unusual event and a big deal at the time. I even met my wife

Catherine there!,” he concludes. The celebrations continued with a ball the following night and, while the reunion may be a bit less glamorous, it will be one to remember for the past members of the record breaking Lit and Deb.

The three piece of Rónán Ó Flaithearta on guitar and vocals, Jamie Murray on cajon, drums and percussion and Eoin Ó Conghaile on bass guitar are delighted with the win and are currently in preproduction for their new four track EP - due out this summer. It’s a great start to the year for a local band who are on the rise, and, following their listeners choice success, they will be interviewed in Dublin for 2xm. Galway is renowned for street performance of all kinds; playing musical instruments, singing, dancing, acting, pantomiming, puppeteering, juggling, reciting, magic, circus skills, human statues, balloon modelling, street theatre, clowning and creating visual art. Straight talking from the trailor trash mouth of Southern Belle, Candy, and the more refined Cara from Connemara. By Cara LYONS

Dear Candy:

The baby won’t stop crying. I suppose if you didn’t have any teeth or hair and your legs were so weak you couldn’t stand on them, I guess you’d feel like crying yourself but I have tried everything. I tried pushing it in a swing. I tried bringing it to the zoo and showing it the lions, I tried putting it on a bouncy castle

with the other children. I tried throwing it up in the air and catching it. I tried feeding it sugar and letting it have fizzy drinks and I even tried showing it pictures of one direction but no luck ever since I found it that day at the bus stop I can’t make it stop. Can you help me please!

www.lovefromcara.com

Candy: Wait a minute oh my gawd! well if you ain’t as slow as one of those energy saving light bulbs! That ain’t your baby stupid! My mamma used to leave me in random places all the time when I was a little baby so this babies mamma probably just forgot where she left it. You see it wants its mamma and that’s why it’s crying. My mamma used to tell me that other people used to leave their babies out on the porch to see

if anyone else wanted them in the place where she used to live but I don’t think this baby was left there like that. I think it was an accident. First of all to get it to stop crying you should give it a cap full of whiskey (when I say cap I don’t mean the type you put on your head) then you need to leave it back where you found it with a note stuck to it saying “Lost baby” and then call the police and tell them where it is.

Cara: Ok it is extremely important that you call the authorities immediately and tell them you found a baby. Do not do anything else with the baby just leave it down in a safe place until they get there…. not on a bouncy castle,

just in a safe non-moving space and wait for help. Do not feed it any more sugar either just leave it alone until help arrives.

Dance Moms Coming to Galway

I

t’s a secret shared only by myself and my other half. And now I have to divulge it to this craicing world. I am a closet fan of Dance Moms. It is my guilty pleasure and recorded religiously for fear I will miss out on the latest fly on the wall drama. For those of you who don’t know, Dance Moms is a reality television show following the lives of young dancers, their moms and their teacher, Abby Lee Miller. This description doesn’t do it justice at all. For those of us brought up watching the Billie Barry Kids on the Late Late, its the behind the scenes tell all cat fights and gossip that occurs while the youngsters are twisting and turning into all sorts of majestic shapes, while constantly on the road competing to be crowned dance champions week in, week out. And they some how manage to go to school, train and deal with their over the top momagers. Abby Lee is your typical ‘love her or hate her’ character as she continually

winds up the doting mammys, who want their daughter to shine. The musos amongst you might recognise one of the ALDC students, Maddie Ziegler, from her performance in Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ music video, which has received over 500 million views on You Tube worldwide (or as Darius just pointed out - half a billion). Show fans amongst you will want to know how they are coping without Chloe and what is the story with Jo Jo. The point of this confession is that, to my shock, they are coming to Galway! Yes the ALDC are bringing their Truth or Dare tour to the Radisson Blu hotel on Friday, February 27th from 6pm. It’s expensive, at over €128 for a ticket, but it is a chance to meet Abby Lee, Maddie, Mackenzie, Kendall and Kalani, have your photo taken with them and get an ALDC t-shirt. It’s a Q and A with some performance also. I am so tempted. I really am. I’m not too old for this sort of thing am I?

here is a belief that fatty products makes you fat. Well, this is not totally true. I used to be one of those who think that, just because a product has fats, it will make you fat. Even my mom used to say “don’t eat that because it will make you fat”. This is not totally true as long as we don’t eat loads of it. Anything in excess ain’t that good either! Consuming the right type of fats, and the right amount of it, will bring benefits like healthy testosterone levels, decrease inflammation, increase muscle growth, support joint health, protect against heart diseases, boost brain function and decrease fat storage. Yes, that’s right, it would promote fat loss. Omega-3 fats and monounsaturated fats are the best ones to consume. Now, saturated fats are essential too in a moderated amount because they promote muscle mass and recovery by maintaining healthy

testosterone levels. The best sources of fats are: avocado, nuts, salmon, tuna, natural almond butter, natural peanut butter, egg yolks, olive oil, among others. How much? I recommend to have salmon at least once a week; every time you cook use a tbsp of olive oil during the day; 2 tbsp of peanut butter per day, 3 eggs yolk per day, and 1 tbsp of olive oil for dressing salads. The only type of fats you should avoid are trans-fat, as they could increase the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and muscle loss. Where do you find trans-fats? Mostly cookies, cakes, pastries, anything fried, etc. Yes, we all love cakes, cookies and pastries, but if we eat at least once a week after a workout, then, it wouldn’t be any harm. In the end, we have to enjoy life. If you have any questions, comments, or want me to write about something, just throw me an email to miguel@miguelmaza.com

t’s one of those things that seems to happen almost accidentally. Starting off with just one or two seems to lead to a lot more and then, before you know it, you’re absolutely littered with them. Yip, it’s easy to go from enjoying the casual video game to building up a large collection of them, with such a wide range of titles available to suit every taste. It can be a lot of fun to collect your favourite games. Luckily, Galway City is home to a prime source for video game collectors, a goldmine of gaming goodness in which you can never tell what kind of gems you might find within. CEX, just off Eyre Square is that very place. This shop is always worth exploring, with

CEX also provides Galway with a place to buy second hand games for older systems and a whole host of peripherals to accompany them, which could prove difficult to find otherwise. Want quiz show style buzzers for your games? How about a small plastic guitar to jam on? A fight stick to virtually battle your friends with? Or even a keyboard for your handheld DS? They’re all here, and in good condition too. All the in-store items have been traded in from other players’ collections, and are looking for a new shelf to call home. Game collectors are always searching for their next item to add to their collections; constantly seeking their own personal Holy Grail of Gaming. They always want something that’s both cool and bizarre in equal measure, and CEX makes it fun to find these sought after pieces of video game history.

TOP Class Beaches are in Galway! Two Galway beaches have hit the top 10 in the country according to the TripAdvisor travel gods. Kulmurvey beach on Inis Mór is no 8 on the list followed by Salthill beaches. We’re sure this will cause some consternation in Connemara

who have many majestic beaches tucked away along the rugged coastline. Inchydoney beach in Clonakilty, Co. Cork, hits the no. 1 spot and we can’t argue with that.

Honour for GAA legend

A fundraising race night takes place at the Harbour Hotel on February 26th in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation. The night kicks off at 7:30pm with a glass of wine and the races begin at 8.

GAA legend, Dr Mick Loftus will receive an Honorary Doctorate during NUI Galway’s PhD Conferring ceremony on Friday, February 20th.

“It’s a race night, so there will be virtual horse races and everyone will have the opportunity to own a horse, be the jockey (not literally) and tote bet on the horses,” explains one of the organisers Karen Waller.

The former footballer was also 28th President of the GAA and a retired coroner and GP. The robing will take place in the President’s Drawing Room in the Quad 10.30am followed by the ceremony at the Bailey Allen Hall at 11am.

Karen became involved in the Irish Heart Foundation charity through the Insurance Institute of Ireland and they have lots more fundraising events planned for 2015. Her friend has a diagnosed heart condition and she is aware of all of the benefits the charity provides.

Almost 50 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students will be conferred from across the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Engineering and Informatics, Business, Public Policy and Law, Science, and Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies.

CRAICing Fashion!!!

Date Night Fashion Well we have just passed Valentines, and here hoping you’ve bagged yourself a date with the guy/girl of your dreams. This week The Galway Player and I will take you through our picks of what we like to see on our potential dates and hopefully you can pick up some tips.

Galway Player This dress is very stylish without being over the top. The notched neckline is eye catching and different. The psychology of the colour yellow is uplifting, happy, cheerful and fun, exactly the emotions you want to portray on a first date. Here’s an alternative to a little black

could pair it with.

Fíona For me it’s about a guy looking like he’s actually made the effort and is a little interested in fashion. All guys need these are few staples which makes mixing and matching easy. My first pick is a well-cut blazer. One in a neutral colour is great because you can wear with anything. Always make sure that your blazer fits well because that is hard to resist. This granddad-neck white shirt can be put on any guy and look great! The clean cut of this under the blazer is smart and stylish. Im not going to pretend to know about chinos but I think this navy pair would be a great addition to a first date outfit. They’re not too formal or too casual.

• 9pm: FYC will play live at The Quays downstairs, a 5 piece rock, pop, funk, ska, reggae covers band from Galway. • 10:30pm: Don’t miss the ‘Screamin’ Bluecats’ at Garvey’s in Eyre Square for a night of rockabilly magic. You ‘aint nothin’ but a hound dog!

He’ll be asking for a second date before you’ve sat down in this ensemble. The metallic finish of the halter neck contrasts perfectly with the leather look leggings that you

If you guys are thinking of going more casual, then the bomber jacket and a white tee is the way. Some guys don’t appreciate how good the basics look! These Nike trainers I have in here are a nod to a lot of the guys in Galway. I see these being sported by men around town and when worn with the proper outfit, they can accentuate the look.
