C h a i r m a n ’ s M e s sag e Hello everyone! As the Chair for this year’s festival, I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time reflecting on my previous Pride experiences but none stick out in my memory more than my very first pride parade. The year was 2001 and I was just 16 years old. I had come out when I was 14 to friends and some family but had never attended a pride event before due to my own insecurities and fear of not knowing what to expect. The memories of that day can never be forgotten. I was overwhelmed by the support, love and acceptance from complete strangers. I admired the fearlessness of everyone there and my experience filled me with hope for my future. The costumes, the colours, the celebration of life and the expression of pride of all those present were inspiring. I often remind myself that for many people, this will be their first

year taking part in a pride festival and it has always been my intention to do the best I can to create an environment that is safe, supportive and fun and not just for first-timers, but for all that attend the festival. We’re a new planning committee with a bright bold vision for the future. For myself and my team, the Galway Pride Festival is more than just a party, it’s a platform for our community to come together, to learn from one another and to celebrate our unique qualities that make us special. This is our first opportunity to introduce ourselves, take chances and demonstrate what we’re capable of.

We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished in only 90 days and we hope you enjoy the week. I’d like to remind everyone that this entire festival is open to all and we encourage you to come to our events, participate in the discussion, join the parade, bring your parents and loved ones and celebrate your uniqueness. Be brave, be bold but above all, be proud. Wishing all our guests, partners, friends and fellow LGBT+ brothers and sisters a safe and happy Pride!

Bruce Henry Galway Pride Festival Chairman 2016

Grand Marshal’s Message Guys and gals – h e l l o ! James Patrice here, and to say I’m still in shock writing this would be an understatement. Why am I in shock? Well, because I’m genuinely honoured and jaysus delira to be this year’s Grand Marshal for The Galway Pride Parade. A Pride parade is something that can often be quite difficult to describe, and something that one has to experience to truly understand. See, I’ve always loved Pride. Ever since my first one with the gals in tow, it’s been a time of year that offers an inimitable air of fun, frivolity, but ultimately, strength and unity. This was no more evident than in the past 15 months, when we, of course, attained Marriage Equality. That was a bit of an ol’ tricky road to tread, wasn’t it? I mean, we’ve all experienced some 4

element of fear in coming out (it took a tie-dye scarf and some Beyoncé to get me talking – long story Fidelma), but to have our actual equality and, essentially, our status as individuals questioned was beyond heartbreaking. Not to mention the possibility of me never being able to force my best friend Cormac to wear a minging tie and stand there and pretend to be happy for me should the big day arise. But, our Fair Isle proved to be beyond the dark ages, and low and behold, we won. Of course, it was more than just getting a ring on our finger, it was about, as Queen B so eloquently sings, freedom. Sure, we had the legality of freedom, but we also were granted the ability to experience that aforementioned strength and unity not just for a weekend, but for the rest of our lives. And, for the rest of the next

generation’s lives. So, to anyone in the world, be them LBGT or not, who may be feeling a bit disheartened, or as I would say, a bit rotted, for whatever reason – the solution is surprisingly simple. Feel proud. Come down to us here on August 20th, and feel the freedom. If the theme this year is “Express Yourself ”, then by jaysus guys and gals, that’s exactly what we’ll be doing. And I tell ya – I’m living for it. -James Fo r a l l t h e ro t te d a n t i c s , fo l low J a m e s Pa t r i ce o n Sn a p c h a t ( @ J a m e s Pa t r i ce ) , I n st a g r a m ( @ j a m e s _ p a t r i ce ) a n d Fa ce b o o k ( / jusdejames)

Am I going to use the men’s or women’s bathroom? Will today be the day someone attacks me? I feel like I am constantly weaving my way through a web of choices, always one move away from disaster. These are decisions and choices that everyone else makes unconsciously and often takes for granted, but they generate an internal turmoil that can be paralysing to a Trans person.

Let me Trans -late

I’m a man with a Trans history. This is what I tell myself every day as I wake up and as I go to sleep. This is one of the most important sentences to me, it gets me through my darkest days and makes me proud on my happiest days. It’s who I am.

Having said that, I wouldn’t change being Trans for anything. It has made me who I am, it’s why I wake up in the morning. I have met some of the most incredibly strong people who are now in my corner, backing me. My family, My partner and My friends. Everyone one of them has accepted me for who I am and who I will become. I hope to in the future apply for my gender recognition certificate and legally that I was questioning my gender, my heart has never beaten so hard change my name, this is something I have always wanted to do. I have and so fast, it felt like I was telling struggled with many decisions someone my biggest secret. I longed to tell someone but the fear throughout my life, from choosing almost always prevented the words a name that suited me, to who I told, to whether I will get surgery. escaping my body. I felt a mixture Choosing a name was difficult, it’s of relief and pride but most of all I felt more confused than ever. I had something that defines you, it’s the first thing someone learns about built up my “coming out” to be this you. I wanted to get it “right”. This big thing that would fix how I felt. It didn’t. I still had a lot to discover. led to my parents and I googling That first conversation opened up a baby names to see which one completely new world for me where fitted me. what I felt was normal, other people My future is full of possibility, I understood me, other people had plan to marry the love of my life, gone through those sleepless nights like I did, other people were become a father, a grandfather and who knows maybe even a great like me, I wasn’t alone. grandfather! Ireland right now, in my opinion, for Trans rights, is I always tell people that being where Homosexuality rights were Trans doesn’t define you, you are in 1993. We have a long way to go you no matter what. In reality, it but conversations are happening doesn’t have to define you, but and support is increasing. We are a it certainly affects all aspects of community. We are important. your life, from what shirt you wear

Growing up I knew something was different about me, I wasn’t the girly girl I was supposed to be. I was the sporty, shy, tomboy without the language to describe how I felt. I was 18 before I ever discovered the language that described how I felt, described who I always was. Imagine being that fresh faced 18 year old coming to college to start the next adventure of your life and having everything in your world turned upside down. I was a man trapped in a woman’s body and had no idea how to let it out. I spent a long time questioning whether what I felt was real. I would spend nights that day to ensure you “pass”, awake trying to understand why I to deciding whether to pee in felt this way, I felt alone. the public bathroom or just hold it an extra hour until you’re in No one I knew, or knew of, felt the safety of your home. To me, like this. At the time I didn’t even being Trans is a constant battle of know people could feel like this. I balancing decisions. Will this make remember the moment I first told me appear male? Am I being too feminine?

Yes Equality - One Year On I remember vividly the first day we went out campaigning for the marriage referendum last year. While there were lots of people who greeted us

with smiles and support, there were plenty of disgusted reactions and nasty comments. We tend to surround ourselves in a bubble of people who share our values and thinking, and anyone who thought this would be an easy win was shocked that day.

It was one of the greatest honours of my life to help organise the Yes Equality campaign in Galway, joining over 200 volunteers who together knocked on 45,000 doors asking for Yes votes, and walked enough miles during the campaign to

It was a hard-won victory that should rightly be celebrated during Pride. We should also be mindful of the activists who paved the way before it would have been possible to organise such a campaign. People like Nuala Ward, organiser of the first ever Galway Pride Parade, and others who took so much

doesn’t even take acts of unimaginable hate like Orlando to remind us that there is a still long way to go. There is still no law that punishes hate crime in Ireland. Mental health services have been hugely neglected in Ireland and the LGBTQIA* community is disproportionately affected by this. There is still daily discrimination, and wider society must step up and make this unacceptable. I’m looking forward to the day when these and other issues are solved and I hope we in Galway will play our part, and
