A Driving New Mayor for Galway Taxi passengers in the city got more than they bargained for recently when they discovered their driver was none other than Galway’s newly appointed Mayor, Cllr Frank Fahy. Cllr Fahy is determined to juggle his busy mayoral schedule and his profession as a cab driver as much as possible over the coming year. Menlo’s Frank is a well-known figure in the city having worked as a taxi driver for the past 25 years. He even scooped an award and all-expenses paid trip to Florida when he was named the Irish Taxi Driver of the Year. “I worked a few hours on a Friday night recently and my passengers were taken aback when they found out I am the Mayor!” he told the Craic in Galway. “Sure they didn’t believe me! My hope is to work on weekends but I don’t know if it will be possible,

6 CRAIC

there is always something happening.” He hails from a large family both at home and abroad, who are all “really excited” that he has become the City Mayor. In fact, he is not the first of his clan to gain a prestigious political position. His first cousin, John Fahey, was Premier of New South Wales and Minister of Finance in the Australian Federal Government. “Although we are from opposite ends of the world, Australia and Ireland, he is delighted that someone else in the family has an interest in politics,” explained Mayor Fahy. “I have a very big family, right across the world, and they are all really excited about it and have started making plans to come to Galway for the mayoral ball!” While only new to the role, Mayor Fahy says it is “fantastic” and

“go, go, go”. The challenge, he says, is to remain disciplined about time keeping and he is grateful to his “fantastic driver and secretary” for their support.

CRAICing NEWS

Thank You, Mr McGettigan! Were you there? I have a feeling this tale may become something of an urban legend in Galway. For some, it may seem like a minor happening, a regularity in their social calendar. But for me, it brought about such wide eyed wonderment that I was speechless and almost rendered incapacitated for a few, vital, moments. It had all fallen into place. It was the perfect night. The skies were clear, the opening of a new bar in Galway, McGettigans, was causing a furore of excitement and there I was - amidst the electric blue and wood features, the silver ceiling and the bookcases, the fine mix of a crowd and Mundy pumping out the tunes with his live band. I missed the official launch but was there for the grand opening with a concert by Mundy himself. We all waited. We waited for the notes of ‘July’ to wave magically over the eager punters. We joined in to the strains as the chorus of ‘oh my my my’ reached its crescendo. It was all great craic.

Now my recollection is a little hazy, but another favourite of mine, a U2 song, began its familiar melodic pattern and I went up to join the fans at the front. Mundy had taken a secondary role and some other fellow was bellowing out the tune and giving it a fair good whack. I thoroughly enjoyed the rendition. As he finished, he thanked the audience for listening and said the words that I have since recalled many times over to my friends who were not there. “As a thank you, there will now be a free bar for half an hour”. The courageous singer who took to the mic with Mundy was the owner, Dennis McGettigan. A free bar and sure he doesn’t even know me. Wasn’t that just lovely! At last the old Cuba / Bentley has been revamped at a cost of around €2.5 million and

he has breathed new life into the old guy with his chain of sports bars. This is the McGettigan Group’s 11th venue, with three in Dubai and others in Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Limerick, Donegal, Dublin, New York and Singapore.

CRAICing launch of The 27th Galway Film Fleadh Hurray! It’s that time of year again when the Galway Film Fleadh rocks into town from July 7th-12th. Now in its 27th year, it boasts wonderful and diverse films from 23 European countries. There was some stunned surprise at the launch recently when it was announced that the IMC would no longer be part of the event. And in true Fleadh style, programmer Gar O’Brien put a positive spin on the situation, describing it as “a good thing” as the “atmosphere around the Town Hall and Cinemobile will be electric”.

“One of the tenets of any film festival is that it should reflect the place it’s from,” he told the gathered crowd at the Radisson Blu. “Anyone attending Berlin says it’s cold, efficient and surprisingly fun; Cannes is warm and obsessed with women in high heels! Galway is Ireland’s cultural heart and this has as much to do with its people. We have become the epicentre of the Irish film industry.” Over six days, the film fleadh features 13 world premieres and countless European and Irish premieres. There will also be premiere screening of short Irish made films.

Among them is Maidhm, which was filmed on location in Salthill, and will be screened on Saturday July 11th at the Town Hall Theatre at 12pm. “It is a beautiful poetic film about an autistic boy and his mother,” explains Galway actress Tara Breathnach who plays the character of the mother. “The film is quite stylised to convey how the young boy views the world. There is a sense of confusion, but the overall theme is that of absolute love between a mother and son. The character I play is stressed and tired, but she loves her son and does everything for him “The film shows the daily struggle of having an autistic child. The daily pressures are unimaginable, but then a ray of sunshine breaks through, whether it’s a smile, or any hint of affection. That is a huge bonus. I am really proud to have worked on it.” Other highlights include The Song of the Sea, screening at 6pm on Thursday July 9th at the Town Hall Theatre followed by Kila in the rowing club and an afternoon with John C Reilly at the Town Hall Theatre at 3pm on Sunday July 12th. We couldn’t possibly fit in all of the events in our little but large magazine, but for more log on to www. galwayfilmfleadh.com. (AH)

CRAICing Gaming

The Galway Gamer - Trench This city has always been known for its perpetual stream of creativity, from musicians and poets to artists and all manner of street performers. Another brand of creative minds can be found in the indie game development scene where a local team, known as Howling Hamster, have excelled with the demo of their upcoming game, Trench. The game has been created by the three man operation and revolves around the theme of deep sea exploration, where the player takes control of a small submarine and must fight to survive against swarms of aquatic aliens along the ocean’s bed. These enemies range from swift little squid-like creatures to enormous and

terrifying bosses, which collectively give Trench an atmosphere that’s thick with suspense. “Down at the bottom of the ocean it’s a very isolated, lonely kind of place,” said the game’s lead artist, Trevor. This feeling is supported and amplified by the game’s eerie musical score which re-enforces that sense of foreboding.

Trench recently became “green lit” on popular gaming website, Stream, meaning that the full game will appear there when the development process is finished and the final product is launched. At the moment, Trench’s demo is available on the site free of change. It features some of the games latest additions and pits the player against a horde of aliens as they try to traverse the dark, craggy ocean’s depths. You can keep up with the game through Howling Hamster’s Facebook and twitter pages. The team also make regular appearances at Galway Gaming Tribes in The Loft of Seven Bar on Monday evenings where people can experience their upcoming game first hand.

BELL BOOK & CANDLE

This creates a fun, fast paced battle game that calls for quick reactions and even quicker thinking.

Galway Creates a Lasting Impression Galway, the ‘cultural Mecca’ of Ireland, sculpted and fashioned by the vast and fierce natural beauty that is the Atlantic Ocean, is a compact, alluring, vibrant city that embodies youth, energy and creativity; close to my heart, this salty city continues to draw me back. In its rocky, rugged and raw landscape, in its people and personality, and in its multitude of colour and languages, Galway’s appeal is global. This magazine is founded as a testimony to the strength of the culture of Galway, its re-emergence as a keen economic and artistic centre and to act as a literary celebration of the intimate and friendly feel that belies its city’s status and a metaphorical toast to the social life of Galway. I have experienced Galway dearly in a soulful relationship that began when I was an infant and will not end even after my grandmother

passes, who has been the sole purpose for our visits; because she is our spiritual anchor and we love her. It is not the man-made structures that I love, it is the essence of the place, the personality, the people and the inartificial existentialism of the art of Galway that maketh the city: a habitat is where we dwell, but Galway resides on in my heart. Living across the border and reared in an environment of provincial thinking and rigid indoctrinations which continue to be imbued psychologically as a legacy of the Troubles, Galway has always represented to me a creative freedom of the mind that transcends all boundaries and is intoxicating. My recent work experience with photographer Darius has opened up potential career opportunities for which I am grateful. Mark is pictured with Brax from Home and Away at the

I’m sorry to hear about your nuts. It sounds like it’s not really a squirrel but some kind of ancient spirit pretending to be a crafty squirrel. My uncle

used to have the same problem and he said the best way to deal with it is to put the spirit squirrel on a mini rocket and send it into the air. But don’t worry, you give it a mini squirrel parachute too so it can land safely, just far away from you. Problem solved. Or you could just share your nuts, I mean those little critters are cute!

Cara: For flip sake do not ever strap a squirrel to a rocket! This is not an ancient spirit squirrel it is just a normal squirrel! You need to look around your house and try and find a hole or space where he’s getting in and block it. Interview with director Saul Dibb As film fleadh fever takes over the city, the Craic in Galway speaks to movie director Saul Dibb, who has worked with Kiera Knightly on the Duchess and more recently with leading lady Michelle Williams in Suite Francaise. Based in the UK, Saul has strong connections to the west of Ireland, with family relations living in Westport, and is looking forward to visiting both Galway and Mayo when he can find the time. Based on a bestselling book by Irene Nemirovsky, and set in rural France in 1940 during the Second World War, Suite Francaise is a story about Lucile Angellier. Her husband is a prisoner of war and she is awaiting news concerning him while living under foreign occupation. Lucile’s life is forever changed when a love affair begins with one of the German officers.

Describe the style and message of the film Suite Francaise? I don’t think it has a particular message but for me what it’s really about is how people behave under the enormous pressure of a foreign occupation, and how all the tensions between the different classes get

magnified. I’ve tried to make it feel as real and authentic as possible, and look at the shades of grey within people during wartime rather than the black and white picture we often get.

Michelle Williams plays the protagonist Lucille Angellier, how involved were you with Michelle in the creative, character development? Michelle and I spent a lot of time together before the shoot talking about character - and how this seemingly ‘good wife’ would gradually change into something completely different by the end of the film.

You have also directed ’Bullet boy’ and ‘The Duchess’ ; what enabled you to make the transition into feature filmmaking? Before making feature films I spent about ten years making documentaries. The transition came when I had an idea for a film about kids growing up with guns around

CRAICing Film Q&A

them in their community which couldn’t be made as a documentary and had to be something fictional. This became Bullet Boy. How involved are you in the producing and the business side? To be honest I’m not really that involved - although because films cost so much money you have to be realistic about what’s required in terms of who you cast etc The heart of this story is the impossible love between a young French wife and a Nazi commander, and has been described as evoking echoes of the Bogart/Bergman classic Casablanca. How does this make you feel? If anyone has said that then I guess I’m flattered because Casablanca is a classic but in truth I think they are such different stories so I’m not sure the comparison holds up that well!

A Head Start for the Galway Races! What is the first thing that ladies think about when it comes to dressing for the races?....the hat! It is the centrepiece and the determining factor between a good and a winning outfit. A lady who knows all about this is local Tuam milliner Caithriona King. Caithriona won Milliner of the Year at this year’s Irish Fashion Innovation Awards and specialises in making bespoke pieces. She has the ability to work with a client to find a style to best suit them.

it makes a lasting impression. This light pink dress from River Island ensures that the focus is on your headpiece. The lightness of the pink only enhances the purple and block colours are suited to dressing for the races. When accessorising, it’s best to once again accent your main colour. In this case, I opted for this lilac blazer and matching shoes from New Look. The pastel colours compliment the fantastic headpiece and the dress. I find that jewellery to be something a girl has to choose herself, but I would go for these silver pieces from River Island and Thomas Sabo.

I have selected two headpieces from this talented milliner, and her talent can be seen through her workmanship. The first piece I chose was the ‘Linda’ headpiece in a regal deep purple. The colour of this is the starting point and neutral tones are best suited to this piece to ensure that

32 CRAIC

The second headpiece I chose was this intricately designed navy piece. For those of you who would like to try a look for the races that is more summery and fun, I chose a yellow flower pattern dress from Topshop. The navy design in this dress picks up on the headpiece and accentuates it.

This swarovski jewelled necklace is light and fun, and just enough, because the headpiece is always our focal point. I chose these platform heels from Schuh as the neutral white lends to summery feel that is perfect for sipping prosecco while getting swept away by the excitement of the Galway Races. CRAICing History

by Avril HORAN & Darius IVAN

The Winding Stair at Thoor Ballylee Even the name, Thoor Ballylee, is as poetic as the man who called this historic stone building his home. William Butler Yeats spent twelve summers in this towering building located outside Gort on the banks of the Streamstown River. Although it had fallen into disrepair, it was a popular tourist attraction, until it was forced to close its doors due to flood damage in 2009. Thanks to the efforts of the Yeats Thoor Ballylee Society and the local community, the building re-opened to much fanfare on June 13th as part of the 150th celebrations to honour the great bard. The Nobel Prize winner was inspired by the Norman tower in his poetry volumes The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair (1933).

Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD, and the Chair of the Yeats Thoor Ballylee Society, Senator Fidelma Healy Eames, were on hand to oversee the joyous proceedings, to the traditional sounds of Máirín Fahy on fiddle, Enda Dempsey on guitar, Carmel Dempsey on keyboard and Mary Murray on tin whistle. To add to the festivities, some turned out in period costume, storyteller Niall de Búrca entertained the youngsters, while

Yeats himself (actor Colm Farrell) whisked in on horseback to regale the crowd with the poem The Song of the Wandering Aengus.
