CRAICing Gaming

The Galway GamerSports, Sports, Sports It’s that time of the year again - the time when sports fans dig into the latest renditions of their favourite pastimes in video game form and, in turn, the entire video game community goes sports crazy. Each year sees the release of many popular sports games. None more so than the game that makes its way into the living room of almost every gamer in the country- Fifa. This annual football game improves and becomes more realistic with each passing year. Using state of the art motion capture, it puts you at the centre of the action as you choose from your favourite real life football teams. This year’s title, Fifa 16, will see a host of updates and tweaks, including now allowing the player to play as women’s football teams for the first time. Along with this, another hugely popular sports franchise is the WWE games. These wrestling games allow you to choose from a whole host of WWE Superstars from the last twelve month’s worth of the TV shows and main events. Here you can take home your favourite on-screen feuds and battles. Who’d

win between Triple H and The Undertaker? Could John Cena beat Booker T? Which brand has the strongest roster, Smackdown or Raw? All of these questions are available for you to answer with your friends, or just relive some of the classic moments from your favourite wrestler’s careers. Sports games are huge and tend to gather a massive following each year. Whether you enjoy basketball in the form of NBA 2K16, American football games like Madden or more relaxed golf based titles such as Rory McIlroy’s PGA Tour; there are enough well made sports games

to keep you happy until this time in 2017. You can expect a number of Fifa 16 and Pro Evolution Soccer tournaments to be run in Galway city’s pubs and clubs in the upcoming months.

Galway Musicians to Strike a Cord in Greece A band of Galway based musicians have come together to travel to Lesvos, Greece, to help out with the refugee crisis. Experienced workshop musicians Maeve Kelly, Liam Conway and Ciaran De Burca, will bring their brand of music therapy to those left stranded by the Syrian conflict, while also volunteering during the day for the first two weeks in December. “The three of us are experienced workshop co-ordinators,” explains Maeve. “We have worked with children and young people in Vietnam, China and most recently Malawi. We have seen first-hand how effective music can be in lifting spirits in dire situations. Peter Brazier and Frank Hall are also coming with us, and have many years of workshop coordination, music and dance teaching and playing experience.

“We aren’t doctors or nurses. If you have a talent, a skill, that’s what you should use - and our skill is working with children who have been through trauma by lifting their tedium -lifting their spirits. Like loads of people, every time I saw the crisis unfold on television, I just started crying. It really moved me.

the refugees change depending on the circumstances. We just completed a big collection of medical supplies, and now there are issues as a result of a large amount of rainfall. We will be putting a call out to try and get a load of rain ponchos, whatever we can carry with us, before we go.

“Early this year, I had a life changing experience. I went to Malawi to give music workshops in children’s prisons and orphanages. They carry it with them for the rest of their lives. The workshops raise their levels of happiness and self-confidence.

“We are also looking for sponsors to cover the costs of hiring people carriers while we are there, to assist with the transport of women, children and people too ill or injured to walk the 40 mile journey from the north of Lesvos to the registration centre in Mytilene,” she concludes.

“We will volunteer during the day, and in the evening, perform music workshops with the kids to give them some soul food. The situation changes on an hourly basis and the needs of

Waterboys rock Seapoint The Waterboys recorded two albums in Spiddal in the late 1980s , Fishermans Blues and Room to Roam. The band was well known for joining in on sessions around Galway and played a major role in Galway becoming the cultural capital of Ireland at that time. The band returned to Galway to play at the iconic Seapoint ballroom promoting their new album Modern Blues. Mike Scott has changed the Waterboys line-up many times and this time he has deployed a very experienced rhythm section. Ralph Salmins on drums, David Hood (Muscle Shoals session bassist) and Paul Brown, renowned Memphis keyboard player, along with Zach Ernst on guitar. Seapoint ballroom has not changed much since its inception in the 1940s. The interior provided a nostalgic backdrop as the Waterboys detonated on stage with some of the tracks from the new album. The power of this new rhythm section became very apparent with a solid blues and soul groove, and Scott looked determined to win this game when he exploded into the great rock

song Medicine Bow. Many classic songs followed including Glastonbury song, and at this stage a powerful atmosphere enveloped the ballroom. The large middle aged audience seemed slow to react ,then all of a sudden the vanguard Waterboys fans led the charge and Seapoints maple floor began to heave. After one hour the band left the stage to let Mike and the brilliant Steve Wickham perform a beautiful and evocative version of Don’t bang the Drum. For me, this was the crescendo of this master class concert. The Whole of the Moon followed and the Fishermans Blues was played as the encore . The band took a bow

and the crowd clapped and roared. The artist William Turner was known to tie himself to the bow of a ship during a storm to get inspiration for his paintings. Mike Scott must have done the same and sailed into an Atlantic force ten to get the inspiration for this show. Mike Scott with his eclectic style is one of greatest songwriters of his time. Steve Wickham is the greatest rock fiddler in the world, with players like this on the pitch it a resounding 5-0 victory to the Waterboys. The vanguard fans walk out to a mild October night and await the return of pan.

The starting point of the festival, curated by writer and art historian Mary Cremin, is the island of Hy-Brasil. Winter College Essentials Galway is buzzing with students again and I must say I am slightly envious. Towards the end of my college career, I was an expert in being ready for the coming semester, and I have compiled a short list of my college essentials. All my choices are neutral colours because it makes your wardrobe easier to work with. You can put an outfit together easily with no time wasting!

by Fiona NÍ FHOGHLUA My next essential is a planner or diary. It is so helpful to keep on top of assignments and study. I was slightly obsessed with them, so I had one for college, and one for personal appointments. There’s a great brand online called Lily

Pulitzer which makes gorgeous planners and school essentials. If you’re going to be in college you’re going to need a bag. I was never one to use a doublestrapped school bag. I always opted for a tote bag in a neutral tone, so it could be easily matched

The first thing that I couldn’t live without was a good coat. As we all know, the weather in galway will get very cold and windy, so you need something to keep you warm on that walk to college. I love these camel coats that are everywhere right now. They go with any colour and are so warm!

weather we can expect. I love these

ones because they are comfortable, stylish and functional. Again they go with mostly everything so you can’t go wrong. The last thing I would recommend would be a chunky scarf. This is so good to have because you will need it to keep you warm, but when you get to lectures, it’s usually so so hot so you can easily take it off! For

with my outfits. This black leather one is so similar to the one I had last year. I would also recommend getting yourself a locker. It’s so handy to dump all your books into. Next is those perfect winter boots. Every girl needs a pair that will see them through the terrible

Family Ties: Paul and Brian Hughes – Abbeyglen Castle, Clifden Paul Hughes: “If you

love it, you can live it, and never work a day in your life. I’m a Dub - I never got my leaving or my inter, and so my mother got me a job in the famous Russell hotel in Stephens Green, where I worked for two years free of charge. That’s where I developed my love for the hotel industry. I went to work for a year in France and later in Madrid, Italy, Switzerland and Rome; my love of Rome started then too. I moved on to the Hibernian in Dawson Street. One day I was cheeky with my boss, as I wanted them to double my pay, from £4 to £8 a week. They didn’t like ultimatums! I then worked with the Jurys group for two years and, at the tender age

of 24, my uncle offered me a job at Renvyle House Hotel as manager. He was very foolish to put a 24 year old in ! I nearly got the sack after the first year!

up at 7am and work til 1pm. We both take the afternoon off, as the emphasis is needed early in the morning and in the evening.

In 1969/ 70, when I was 29, I signed an agreement to rent the Abbeyglen Castle hotel for three years, with an option to buy it. My love of Clifden and Connemara grew and grew, and I bought it. I’ve been working with the bank manager ever since.

I have three other sons, Aidan, Dermot and Ronan, who all love coming here on their holidays and their breaks. They all love it and they love one another. It’s amazing the amount of siblings who don’t love one another. There is only one black sheep in our family and it’s me! We have had lots of famous guests, but they are only people at the end of the day. I remember when Woody and Mia Allen pulled up in two stretch limos back in 1991 and all of the kids got out – he really came to life playing music in the bar at night. We are very lucky that we didn’t overdevelop Connemara too

My son Brian became my partner in the Abbeyglen after my wife died. He loves the business as much as I do. He loves music and gives me piano lessons from time to time! We tend to work opposite one another and do different things - as it is a 24 hour day. We work 60 minute hours! I’d be

quickly. We don’t have these huge skyscraper hotel – nearly all personally owned. And Clifden has two huge claims to history, Marconi all personally owned. And Clifden has two huge claims to history, Marconi and the first transatlantic flight of Alcock and Brown. I have no desire to retire. My age is a secret but you can work it out! I have seen men retire much younger than I, 15 years ago, and they are going around like grumpy old men with sticks!”

Brian Hughes:

“Back in the We have had lots of famous guests, but they are only people at the end of the day. I remember when Woody and Mia Allen pulled up in two stretch limos back in 1991 and all of the kids got out – he really came to life playing music in the bar at night. We are very

lucky that we didn’t overdevelop Connemara too quickly. We don’t have these huge skyscraper hotel – nearly early days, the hotel opened in early June and closed in early September, so it was a very short season. In the summertime, we lived in a little caravan outside the Abbeyglen, and we would move back in for the winter.

say that ‘everyone in Clifden thought we were mad’, because the hotel was located outside of town. If you wanted a business, it had to be in the centre. But they had the vision to realise it was a great site - you can walk into the village in five or ten minutes - and yet you are completely away from it all. It was just different thinking back then.

Dad used to buy these old banger cars and park them outside to make the hotel look busy. As children, we played in them. Over time, the cars grew moss, weeds and grass and we had to replace them with new old bangers every four or five years!

I went to Garbally College in Ballinasloe, and then to the Shannon hotel school for some wonderful training. I lived for two years in Switzerland, two years in France and a year and a half in

My mum used to

London. I can’t really speak French though! One thing I have learned is that you need a great sense of humour in this business. My dad has a great sense of humour. We get on extremely well. As time goes by, there are some aspects of the business that are not only difficult for him, but equally difficult for me. We have had to embrace a new era of technology and we are trying to interface the front desk with the outside world. It’s a difficult journey, but if we don’t change, we will get lost in the shuffle. We are very lucky that, in the boom years, we didn’t go crazy and build one of these

massive spa centres being pushed on us at the time. What our people wanted was an intimate facility, and my wife Michelle, runs our beauty rooms, which is really popular with our guests. It was only when I returned from the UK recently that I thought ‘this hotel is fabulous’. There is a sense of warmth as soon as you walk in, with open turf fires, and the lighting is just right. It’s the people that work in Abbeyglen that give it a sense of magic too. And the music. There are very few dining rooms with white linen table clothes, a candle and a man in the corner playing live music. It’s something different. It’s quirky, it’s oldey worldy and it’s fun! I love playing music and I play in the bar every Friday and Saturday night.

I was very lucky to survive a plane crash in 2007. We were doing a test flight of a small plane to Inis Meain. It was a very bad, miserable, windy day and, on the way home, we all knew we were in trouble. I remember waking up in a field. I was freezing cold and my shirt was marinated in blood. I had fractured my neck and two women were sticking toilet paper in my ears. We lost two very good friends that day and we think of them often. I am a lucky man to be alive and I am thankful. I certainly have had a lot of fun since then and have enjoyed my life a lot more.”
