TANZANIA IMPLEMENTS A WORLD BANKFUNDED TOURISM PROJECT

Best for domestic, rural and regional tourism in East and Southern Africa, the World Bankfunded Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth project is under implementation in Tanzania. Implementation of the six-year Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth (REGROW) involves the development of community-based tourism projects to empower local communities in taking part in tourism activities. The REGROW project is mostly targeting the development of tourism programs for local communities living neighbors to wildlife parks in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania where tourism and tourist businesses are far less developed. Taking advantage of rich tourist attractions, mostly wildlife and nature, REGROW project will attract Domestic Tourism for local Tanzanians, Regional Tourism for visitors from Southern African states, and international class tourists.

FRANCE BECOMES PREMIER INBOUND TRAVEL MARKET TO TANZANIA

France has been ranked as the leading inbound travel market to Tanzania, since the latter re-opened its skies for travel amidst the world’s COVID-19 pandemic. Tanzania reopened its airspace for international passenger flights on June 1, 2020, after a 3-month stint of COVID-19, becoming the pioneer country in East Africa to welcome tourists to sample its endowed attractions. Latest statistics from the state-run conservation and tourism agency show that France is leading in terms of number of tourist arrivals in Tanzania over the 3-month period covering July, August, and September 2020. Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) Assistant Conservation Commissioner in charge of the business portfolio, Ms. Beatrice Kessy, said that records indicate a total of 3,062 French tourists visited national parks in the period under review, raising the France flag high as the top international tourist market for Tanzania amidst the crisis and overtaking the USA with 2,327 holidaymakers. The third in the list of key Tanzania tourist source markets is Germany with 1,317 visitors, followed by the UK with 1,051 tourists in fourth position.

TANZANIA WORLD’S SAFEST TRAVEL DESTINATION

The World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC) has endorsed Tanzania as the “safest travel” destination globally. The nod by the forum for the Travel and Tourism Industry comes as more than five international flights resumed their flights to the country, amid the Covid-19 pandemic which continues to ravage different parts of the world. Natural Resources and Tourism Minister, Dr. Hamisi Kigwangalla noted that the endorsement was a compelling indication by the Government on how keen and determined it was in maintaining sound preventive measures to contain the deadly virus. Dr. Kigwangalla was optimistic that the certification by the WTTC will restore Tanzania’s confidence on the tourism front and lure more visitors to the country.
